Why 12/0/18?

After hundreds of games testing the three out, the reason I go with Strength of the Ages over Fervor of Battle or Warlord's is because I have found that the 300 additional hp is extremely beneficial to Aatrox's fragile early game kit - especially since the first four items you buy with this build are all damage items. Also, Strength of the Ages is the by far the strongest keystone for the jungle role at the moment.

Why max aatroxW.png?

The reason you max your W on Aatrox is because 1. it maximizes the amount of damage you dish out over time, which will speed up your jungle clear, and 2. it exponentially increases the amount you heal for over time, which will sustain you through your jungle and enemy skirmishes.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Because of the infinite sustain Aatrox has when he's below half health, there really is no need to buy more than one potion. Instead, use the excess gold to purchase a pink ward to secure yourself some extra early vision somewhere on the map.
    I personally prefer Stalker's over Skirmisher's, but they're both viable options.

Core Items

    This should be your early game goal.
    2nd --->
    3rd --->
    4th --->
    5th --->
    6th - choose one

Situational Items

    Your final build should look like this. (see notes)
    I rarely get this, simply because 1. You already have max attack speed with Aatrox's kit + items & 2. By getting it, you either replace Guinsoos Rageblade (not preferred), or lose a defensive item slot. Only really go for this if there are a multiplicity of enemy tanks.
    Definitely a suitable replacement for Guardian Angel or Randuin's Omen where seen necessary.
    Both of these are good, but lack important combination stats that Spirit Visage and Raduin's Omen bring like health + armor or health + magic resistance.
    Go this when the enemy lacks CC or is auto attack heavy.

Why this build?

Honestly, after hundreds and hundreds of games of experimenting on every possible build in book, it wasn't until I tried the combination of these items that I finally felt consistently viable as Aatrox. Because of it, he's become my most played champion and has climbed me multiple tiers to where I currently am now, and he can do the same for you!

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

These are your essential core items. Let me explain.

1403.png
This is the bread and butter item that unlocks Aatrox's potential. When sated, aatroxW.png, instead of every 3rd auto attack dealing additional damage/healing you, becomes every 2nd auto attack. Because of this, along with the extra on-hit magic damage you deal, this one is by far Aatrox's most important item.

3111.png

Since Aatrox's biggest strength comes from his unkillable, life-stealing auto attack passive on his W, it also means his biggest weakness comes from the enemy's CC that prevents him from auto attacking. This item helps shorten the amount of time that Aatrox is locked down.

3124.png + 3812.png

For those of you who are a huge fan of building 3074.png on Aatrox, you're going to want to trust me on this one. I used to be a RELIGIOUS 3074.png purchaser! The 12% lifesteal, +75 AD, and AOE on hit are huge statistical benefits to Aatrox's kit. HOWEVER - here is why I guarantee that the combination of 3812.png + 3124.png is a far better option to help you more efficiently accomplish what you're trying to do with Aatrox.

First - 3124.png

Not only does this give +54 ad, +72 ap, and +64% attack speed at max stacks, but it also gives you a magic damage AOE on-hit that unloads a good amount of magic damage to your target and everyone around them. The extra AP gained is beneficial, especially since Aatrox's aatroxE.png + aatroxR.png both scale with AP, making them both deal more damage. Additionally, since both these spells, 1403.png, AND the 3124.png on-hit proc all deal magic damage, this turns Aatrox into a hybrid damage dealer. This item alone also makes up for nearly the entirety of the splash damage and AD 3074.png provided, while additionally giving a huge amount of attack speed and magic damage to your autos. This will ensure that you are able to deal the necessary damage you need to out-duel other champions, while also giving you enough attack speed to more consistently proc your W's healing effect to make you extremely hard to kill. The combination of aatroxpassive.png + aatroxR.png + 1403.png + 3124.png at level 18 caps your attack speed at 2.5, which is incredible considering you only have two attack speed items.

Second - 3812.png

The reasoning behind choosing 3812.png over 3074.png is because it offers:
  • 15% lifesteal (which is more than what 3074.png offered) on all physical damage sources (including spells, making aatroxQ.png and aatroxW.png's physical damage heal Aatrox)
  • +75 AD (total of +128 AD when combined with 3124.png)
  • +10% CDR (total of 20% CDR when combined with 3065.png)
  • MOST IMPORTANTLY - 15% of all damage taken is turned into a bleed effect over 3 seconds. (this basically makes Aatrox tankier and harder to kill)

TL;DR

  • The offensive and defensive statistical values from combining 3124.png + 3812.png completely overshadow the result of combining a 3074.png with another attack speed item like 3153.png or defensive item like 3742.png
  • Once you complete these two items and get sated, you hit an ENORMOUS power spike.
  • Once you complete these two items and get sated, you can solo baron.
That's a 20-30 minute baron solo.

3065.png
This is a MUST for Aatrox! It makes his aatroxW.png heal you for a crazy amount more. Plus, the health, MR, and CDR are all beneficial to Aatrox's kit. By this point in the game, you're pretty dang hard to kill.

3026.png
I currently enjoy buying this as my 6th item, because it synergizes so well with Aatrox's passive, making him extremely hard to deal with. Basically, you turn into a reckless monster with 3 lives.

3143.png
This is my preferred armor + health item of choice at the moment, seeing as it gives +10 more armor than 3068.png and 3742.png, as well as uniquely reduces the attack speed and critical strike damage of enemy attackers. This will keep you more protected against ADC's and broken duelers like 11.png, and help sustain you through the fight as long as possible.

Why should you play Aatrox? Back to Top

Pros:

  1. Safe jungle clear due to Infinite sustain from aatroxW.png
  2. Incredible late game dueler
  3. Extremely hard to deal with late game with aatroxpassive.png and his lifesteal
  4. Gap closing aatroxQ.png synergizes well for ganking and escaping
  5. No mana
  6. Incredibly snowbally. Money gets him going.
  7. Extreme hyper-carry when fully built
  8. He's basically, like, a dragon. So you already know he's cooler than everyone else.

Cons:

  1. Needs major core items to be effective
  2. Often bursted ridiculously quickly if not built and positioned correctly
  3. Auto attack reliant, so CC shuts him down

Why play Jungle Aatrox instead of Top Aatrox?

Here are a few of the main reasons why 99.9% of the time, I believe it is always more effective to play Aatrox in the jungle rather than top:
  1. Sated Devourer. 1403.png - this. THIS is the #1 reason why I will forever and ALWAYS play Aatrox in the jungle. The difference in Aatrox from having 29 stacks and not being sated and having 30 stacks and BEING sated is too ridiculous to not always have 100% of the time in every single game. It's like going from super saiyan 1 to super saiyan 100. You cannot afford to NOT have this item!
