Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png Well I don't think I have to explain, it gives just too many advantages to be ignored, especially with a melee champ based on auto-attacks. 6.png can have its interest, but it's not as worth it as 4.png

12.png As a toplaner with a great mid and late-game that will try to out-sustain its opponent but still having great ganks, 266.png will clearly prefer 12.png other the other summoner's spells.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

This is the offensive mastery tree, you can also go 12/0/18 with Grasp of the Undying on 266.png especially if you take the off-tank stuff.

Ferocity :

-You have an auto-attacker champion, so let's take some attack speed.
-You have enough sustain to take advantage of Double Edged Sword, you're not here to CC the enemies, you're here to tank and deal.
-266.png uses a lot AD, and have some AP ratios that are better than nothing, and the life-steal and spell vamp from the other mastery isn't very useful on him.
-You have a slow with a quite long duration, so you'll easily profit from the Oppressor mastery.
-You deal mostly physical damages, so armor penetration ^^
-Here it's better to take Fervor of Battle than Warlord's Bloodlust, because you will clearly have enough healing from the stuff and your aatroxW.png to really need it, it's still a very good choice, but with the incredible AS you will have, Fervor of Battle will give you an astonishing amount of damages.

Resolve :

-You already have a incredible amount of healing, so Recovery will not be very useful, while having armor and magic resistance will help a lot seeing its synergy with flat healing (not depending of your maximum health).
-Here both are possible, but generally it's better to take some speed other some damage reduction, because 266.png just need to be able to auto-attack an enemy to have a crazy sustain.
-Once again, both are useful in their own way. Veteran's Scars are good very early in to have some more HP to give for your offensive aatroxW.png, which can give you just what you need to win a early 1v1, but this is obviously not as polyvalent as the bonus healing of the other mastery, which is just very profitable to a self-healer as 266.png.
-Once again, you don't need Perseverance because you will be often between 25% and 50% health, but not under because of your crazy sustain. In the other hand, having your summoner's spells more often is always profitable.

(if you go 12/0/18)
-Here both are equally useful, it completely depends of the match-up and of the way you will play (lots of CC ? Splitpush ? teamfight ? try to catch isolated people ?...)
-You are not here to protect an ally, and as an auto-attacker it's easy to place Grasp of the Undying. You can stil take Strength of the Ages, but it's more jungler-oriented than toplaner-oriented.

R>E>W>Q

Max ult first, no need to explain.

Despite of his aatroxW.png266.png isn't an incredible trader as we could think compared to the other champions, because he hasn't stats that great, and he loses HP on every ability (except his ult and aatroxW.png on heal). But he has a very good healing and no mana, so he will try to win by out-sustaining his opponent, and seeing his kit, what's the best way to do it ?

Why max Q last ?

This spell is very useful, but the scale on ranks isn't that good, and the range and canalisation time make it not as
precise as we could want. The two other spells are better to max.

Why max E first ?

-During the laning phase, you want to outsustain your opponent.
-Generally, the toplaners don't want to have a very long trade, they simply prefer to come, place the burst, and go back, so your aatroxW.png won't be that great during the laning phase, you will use it to heal yourself on minions more than anything else.
-In opposite, your E has a great scaling on ranks, is ranged, and deal magical damages with an AD ratio, which is very interesting on a physical auto-attacker champion like 266.png

You can take your aatroxW.png first, but most of the enemy toplaners will not try to kill you at level 1, so you can simply poke them and take your healing ability at level 2.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Standard starting stuff for AD champs
Against only physical damages top and jungler
    Kinda obvious
    First items to rush

Core Items

Finished fighter stuff (what should Aatrox's build should look like IMO)
    Finished off-tank stuff (#HPOP)
    End game
You're tanky enough to facecheck bushes and do your oracle job.

Situational Items

Can be useful in particular cases
Can be useful in certains cases
With his kit, we see that 266.png can be built as a fighter or as an off-tank :
-He needs some AD AND some AS to make its aatroxW.png efficient -> if built too tanky, he won't have a lot of damages damages and won't tank much more seeing his crazy healing when he has some AD and AS.
-But he needs some tankyness -> he has nothing to dodge or reduce the damages he'll receive unlike 11.png or 157.png, plus he's more based on a crazy constant healing than on crazy damages, and flat healing (not depending of your max health like 36.png) is way more effective when the HP you heal are hard to get down -> build Armor and RM.

Boots :

Whether you play fighter or off-tank, you will always build the same boots :
-3111.png They have some disturbing CC
-3047.png They have a lot of auto-attackers and not that much CC
-3009.png They have mostly slows and I need MS to chase them

First backs :

Aatrox scales a lot on both AD and AS, and has a good scaling on defensives stats and CDR, but especially on AD at the beginning because you already have AS from your passive and ult and you will especially use your aatroxE.png to poke your enemy, which doesn't scale on AS. I'm almost always buying those items early-in :

1037.png > 1001.png > 1043.png > 3111.png > 3133.png > 3812.png > 3124.png

You don't really need lifesteal because your healing comes from your aatroxW.png and your AD, so it's better to take AD than lifesteal.
If you're behind and against a champion dealing only one type of damages, then you can take 1031.png or 3211.png to counter it, and then go on your offensives items. Aatrox is useless if he has no AD or AS, but is better with some defenses than by building full AD/AS.

Fighter :

The must-haves (IMO)

-3812.png : 266.png needs AD to have an utility because, if he lacks of CC and base damages making him weak when built tank, he has 3 AD ratios (on both healing and damages for aatroxW.png) and a lot of AS thanks to his passive and ult. So, OK let's take some AD, but why this item in particular ? Because 3812.png doesn't only give AD and lifesteal, it gives you back health depending of the physical damages you deal, including spells, that means it will heals you of 15% of the damages you do... when you use your aatroxW.png on the offensive stance too ! Once you get 3812.png, you become a war machine dealing like crazy and still having a great sustain.
-3124.png : The new Guinsoo gives you up to 48% AS, which is already very good, but it also gives you the passive making half of your attacks dealing on-hit effects twice... which mean your aatroxW.png will deal bonus damages or heal you every 2 attacks instead of every 3 attacks. Combined to the AD and healing passive of 266.png and 3812.png, you will deal tons of constant damages and still be very hard to kill while having only 2 offensives items.

After

Like we said, we need AD and AS and defensive stats on 266.png. With clearly have enough AD ans AS right now... When 3124.png is stacked. Before, especially if your passive is not filled, you may have problems at the beginning of the fights with a low AS. So before buying my two defensives items, I generally buy at least 1 or 2  1042.png, or a 1043.png to have enough AS for all fights (reminder : the more AS and AD you have, the harder you are to kill seeing your aatroxW.png healing). It's clearly an option, you can go to armor and MR directly.

3742.png : The best armor item for 266.png. It gives you enough armor to endure physical damages and a lot of HP, which is also useful when you consume flat HP for your aatroxW.png. Plus the movement speed helps a lot to engage, because aatroxQ.png has a very short range and is not instant.
3065.png : The best MR item for 266.png. The healing buff fits perfectly with your kit and the CDR is also a very nice plus for 266.png
3153.png : This one is the best last item for this build for 2 reasons : You need some AS for the beginning of a fight to stack 3124.png (even with your ult and passive, some AS is welcome), and seeing your base AS and AD scaling, 3153.png is basically an awesome item for 266.png. Plus the MS stealing, after all you don't run that fast and you need to auto-attack continually. It still can be replaced by a more defensive item depending of the game.

Off-tank

Must-haves (IMO)

-3748.png : You will build a lot of HP and have a great attack speed with your passive and ult, so you'll deal tons of AoE damages with 3748.png !
-3124.png : Same reason as for fighter stuff.

After

-3071.png : You have a lot of attack speed, you scale on AD and tankyness, and once you have 3748.png you deal AoE physical damages (and 266.png kinda like CDR). If you plan to go on damages, 3071.png is the best choice.
-3742.png : Same reason as for fighter stuff.
-3065.png : Same reason as for fighter stuff.

Others

-3022.png : Against runner champions, this will allow you to keep them close to you.
-3026.png : 2much rezurection rito plz
-3156.png : Damage vs AP option.
-3102.png : Against heavy AP (now the item giving the most MR, 70).
-3139.png : To counter an important CC and then rush into your target (90.png).
-3075.png : Against heavy AD, especially auto-attackers.
-3143.png : Against many crits champs (hi 157.png & 23.png) or if an AoE slow can be useful.
-3512.png : You have a great splitpusher, so you can take this one to push even more !

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

Once she gets her tear, she will poke you non stop, and it will be very hard for you to trade with her.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

You have more sustain than him and can zone him easily.

Just beware of his ult when your passive is down.

VS

Darius

Medium

You have more sustain than him and a comparable mid and late-game.

You can trade with him when his passive is not full stacked, but when it is, try to flee until it comes back to 0.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

You have more sustain than him and a better trade, but he has an insane late-game, so if you don't take enough advantage during the laning phase it will not be cool for your team.

VS

Ekko

Easy

He can be a pain in the ass, but he has no sustain and uses mana, so you can just out-sustain him.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

You can out-sustain him easily because he is limited by his mana, just beware at his E's unexpected damages.

VS

Fiora

Easy

Her damages are high, but you can out-sustain her easily.

VS

Fizz

Easy

He is annoying, but you can out-sustain him easily.

VS

Galio

Easy

He's stronger than we could think, but is limited by his mana, so you can out-sustain him easily.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

He can be annoying, but you're better in trades and have an insane sustain to beat him.

VS

Garen

Easy

You out-trade him and out-sustain him. The best Garen can do is to get zoned and have half your farm, waiting for his late-game strengh.

VS

Gnar

Hard

You will get zoned when he is Mini, and won't be able to trade correctly when he is Mega.

VS

Gragas

Easy

He doesn't have enough damage to counter your sustain and is limited by his mana.

VS

Graves

Easy

You can simply out-sustain him.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

He also is a great duelist with a good sustain, but is limited by his mana. Just wait until he gets oom and you'll crush him.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

His turrets will simply zone you. Wait for the late-game.

VS

Illaoi

Easy

You have a better sustain and your passive can temporize her ult.

VS

Irelia

Medium

She plays the same way as you, just limited by her mana but stronger once level 7.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

A good lane for Jarvan is a lane with kills but he has no sustain and you are better in long trades. Simply heal yourself on minions and you'll be fine.

VS

Jax

Hard

You are both auto-attackers, but Jax is strong against auto-attackers thanks to his jaxcounterstrike.png and has of course an insane late-game. His weakness is his lack of sustain.

VS

Jayce

Medium

He can poke you but is limited by his mana. Try to out-sustain him.

VS

Kalista

Hard

You will get kited and won't be able to attack her.

VS

Karma

Medium

She will poke you endlessly and you won't be able to catch her, but her damages are generally not strong enough against your sustain. Passive lane.

VS

Kassadin

Easy

You can simply out-sustain him and he is limited by his mana. Just beware of his nulllance.png shield, because your aatroxE.png deals magic damages.

VS

Kayle

Hard

She can kite you and has some sustain. Attack her when her kayleE.png is down and try to make her waste her mana.

VS

Kennen

Hard

You won't kill him, he will poke you endlessly, but your sustain is good enough to survive.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

It will be hard to catch her, but your sustain is enough to face her poke.

VS

Lulu

Hard

You won't be able to trade her and she will poke you endlessly. Just heal yourself.

VS

Malphite

Hard

The nightmare of all auto-attackers... You won't be able to trade with him, but you can heal yourself and poke him with your aatroxE.png (which deals magic damages).

VS

Malzahar

Easy

You can out-sustain him and poke his passive down before going in.

VS

Maokai

Medium

It's hard to face Maokai with a melee champion, but you can bet on your sustain to beat him.

VS

Master Yi

Easy

You are both auto-attackers but you have no mana, a better sustain and can interrupt his meditate.png with your aatroxQ.png

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

You can out-sustain him, but if you can't kill him you will regret it later.

VS

Nasus

Hard

Your worst nightmare ! His sustain is enough against you, his wither.png is terrible against all auto-attackers and of course his late-game is insane. Never pick Aatrox against Nasus.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

He doesn't have a lot of escape, is slow and has no sustain.

VS

Nunu

Easy

Even if Nunu is an insane laner, especially against auto-attackers, you can easily survive during the laning phase and Nunu's late-game is very bad, unlike you.

VS

Olaf

Easy

Beware of his early damages, but you have more sustain, are not limited by mana and you don't really care about his CC immunity.

VS

Pantheon

Easy

His damages are heavy, but your sustain is too, and you have no mana.

VS

Poppy

Easy

You can simply out-sustain her, but it can be hard to kill her.

VS

Quinn

Hard

She will kite you hardly, you won't be able to kill her and will get zoned.

VS

Rammus

Easy

Even if Rammus is strong against AD, especially auto-attackers, your sustain is too high for his damages and you don't have mana.

VS

Renekton

Medium

You both have sustain and no mana. He has more damages but less sustain. Just poke him and wait until the end of the laning phase.

VS

Rengar

Easy

You out-sustain and out-trade him.

VS

Riven

Easy

You can heal the damages she deals you and she has no sustain.

VS

Rumble

Easy

He has no sustain, unlike you, and you are better in trades.

VS

Ryze

Hard

He can poke you hard, but your sustain is enough to counter it. It can be a no-kill lane, but it's more at Ryze's advantage.

VS

Shaco

Easy

Just poke and heal yourself.

VS

Shen

Easy

He is good against auto-attackers, but his damages are too low for your sustain and he has no sustain.

VS

Shyvana

Easy

She plays the same way as you, but without sustain.

VS

Singed

Hard

It's very hard for every auto-attackers to face Singed. Sustain his damages, but he has a good late-game...

VS

Sion

Easy

You can out-sustain him and he has only his ult to escape, it's an easy lane, but his late-game is very strong.

VS

Swain

Medium

Try to kill him before 6, he has no escape and no sustain early-in. Once level 6, force him to waste his mana, and then all-in.

VS

Tahm Kench

Medium

It will be hard to kill him and his tahmkenchW.png is very annoying, but you can out-sustain him.

You won't be able to kill him, but you can out-sustain him because of his mana. Just beware of his late-game.

VS

Teemo

Hard

Teemo against auto-attackers...

VS

Trundle

Hard

You need AD to heal yourself and to deal damages, and he has a stupid sustain with his passive. Almost impossible for you to kill him.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

You both have great sustain and trades.

VS

Urgot

Easy

He will poke you hard, but you can heal yourself endlessly and wait for him to be oom. And he is more squishy than he looks.

VS

Vayne

Hard

No chance to catch her and she will simply kite you until your death, and of course an insane late-game.

VS

Vi

Easy

You have a better trade and more sustain.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

You both have insane sustain, try to kill him early-in or it will be a passive lane until the end, which is not the right thing to do against Vladimir.

It can be hard to kill him but you have a better sustain.

Aatrox ? Why ? Back to Top

Hello and thanks for reading my guide !
Please don't pay attention to my english level, I'm not a native ^^

To present myself rapidly, I am a toplaner main who loves to play unusual champions or in an unusual way.
I'm also a theorist, meaning I enjoy a lot seeking the perfect build (of course in my opinion) for a champion.

Recently I got interested into Aatrox, considered as one of the worst champions of the game (also by me before playing him a lot).

Let's see why this champ is considered that bad and how he can be good, shall we ?

Champion analysis Back to Top

Aatrox is a melee champion without mana but spending health to use his abilities.

He has some cc and some mobility and is based on auto-attacks and has the biggest sustain of the game.
He can be a top-laner, where he will simply try to out-sustain his opponent with his crazy healing, or a jungler, where his sustain on his auto-attacks and his sufficient mobility will make him the best jungler to take objectives in the game.

Abilities

aatroxpassive.png : Your passive is a double passive :
-You don't have mana but a blood bar. Your passive will give you constant attack speed depending of how much you filled your blood bar by losing health using your abilities, up to 50% bonus attack speed, making Aatrox basically a trading machine.
-If your second passive is charged, the next time you'll die, you'll resurrect in 2 seconds by emptying your blood bar. The most blood you had, the most health you'll have. This resurrection can give you the opportunity to play more crazily, just beware when you don't have it, Aatrox has a great sustain as long as he can auto-attack, but hasn't got big basic defensives stats.

aatroxQ.png : Your Q is your mobility and hard CC spell.
Aatrox jumps to the targeted location, dealing damages to the ennemies hit. The ennemies in the center of the impact zone will get bumped.
This spell has a little range, but it's still enough to pass through little walls like around the baron and dragon, giving Aatrox the possibility to go in or out the objectives location.
Coupled to your insane ability to do objectives with your constant damages and sustain, Aatrox becomes one of the best junglers to take objectives. He is not the faster, but can easily do them without dying and without being the jungler, can easily flee in case of trouble, can easily go in to steal it with smite.
It costs 10% of your current health, so with some HP it can fill your blood bar quite fast with just 1 point in it.
The scaling on this ability is not as good as the others, so it's better to max it last.

aatroxW.png : Your W is your trade and sustain ability.
You can toggle between two effects happening every 3 attacks :
-The Red one heals you for a little amount depending of your AD, but the healing is TRIPLED if your below 50% of your health.
-The Purple one will deal bonus physical damages depending of your A, but costs you 1/4 of the bonus damages as health.
With this spell, it's easy to understand how insane Aatrox is at trading. Use the offensive form when you have more than 50% of your health, and the defensive form when you're below 50%, the healing becoming INSANE and more rentable than the offensive form.
You can use the offensive form to stack your blood bar, and then come back to the defensive form to heal yourself.
The third attack effect depends of the form you take, but you don't have to do 3 attacks after toggling, you can switch anytime without delay the moment the effect will occur.
With this spell, you have a champion having a heal scaling on both AD and AS, rending those stats core.
At top, you should max it second, because your E will give you useful poke and one point into it is enough to have a crazy sustain.

aatroxE.png : Your E is your poke and slowing spell.
Aatrox sends a quite slow energy in the targeted direction, dealing good magic damages and slowing ennemies touched.
The spell is almost impossible to miss at melee, but almost impossible to land at max range because the hitbox gets smaller gradually as it advances.
It also has the great advantage of dealing MAGIC damages while having an AD ratio, which is very interesting when the rest of the kit is almost only physical, giving you a physical trade and a magical poke.
At top, it's better to max it first because it is your poke spell and deals magical damages.

aatroxR.png : Your R is a big buff with a AoE damages on activation.
Aatrox deals big magical damages on activation to all ennemies around and fills his blood bar by 20% for each enemy champion touched, and then you gain a great amount of attack speed and bonus range.
Again, having magical damages on a auto-attacker champion is a very good point, plus the burst if you land all your spells at once is crazy for a champion created for long trades.

Pros & Cons Back to Top

Pros :

  1. Insane sustain as long as he can attack something
  2. Great duelist thanks to his healing
  3. Some mobility and CC
  4. Very strong in long trades
  5. No mana
  6. Best objectives-oriented jungler
  7. Not very hard to master
  8. Being unpopular, most of the players don't know how to play him or against him
  9. Good splitpusher

Cons :

  1. He gets countered by a simple grievous wounds (14.png or 3123.png or 3165.png)
  2. Can be kited quite easily
  3. Hard to engage on ranged champions because of the short range of his aatroxQ.png
  4. Doesn't have a big presence in teamfights

So we can see why he is that unpopular : he an be countered with a simple grievous wounds, essentially when he is below 50% of his health, and 3165.png is a very popular item you will see in almost every game you play, and I'm not even talking about 14.png...
This is why Aatrox is a great splitpusher, he can take almost any champion in 1v1, even with grievous wounds, but in teamfights you can be sure you'll get grievous wounds at a moment.

But still, his sustain make him very strong against a lot of champions in the top-lane and gives him a very safe jungle.

How to top lane Aatrox Back to Top

Laning phase

Let's be clear : You will "lose" all your trades. Your spells cost you health and Aatrox hasn't got big basic stats, so all your short trades will be to your enemy's advantage.

BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER ACTUALLY !

Because Aatrox's strength early-in is the sustain. While your opponent will lose health and mana attacking you, you have no mana and just have to attack minions to regain your health and then the "bad" trade you took will become a good trade.

And if you're facing someone that doesn't know Aatrox, he will probably try to finish you "because you're low on health"... And then Aatrox shines with his CRAZY sustain. You can't believe how many times you can win a lane just because they underestimate Aatrox's heal below 50% of health.

During the whole laning phase, poke your opponent with your aatroxE.png in order to fill your blood bar and to... deal him damages.

If you want to have an effective laning phase, you need to kill your enemy, or at least zone him hard. In order to do this, you still have to trade smartly.
With Aatrox, you will rarely all your health because your heal is strong only when you're below 50%, so heal yourself to 60% of your max health after a trade before starting an other, don't lose your time pushing to heal yourself more than this.

Also, don't hesitate to use the offensive form of aatroxW.png to deal damages in the beginning of the trades, then your opponent will believe he can trade you, so you'll take the advantage by simply using the defensive form of your aatroxW.png

To finish, Aatrox's ult deals a lot of damages at activation, so you can easily burst down a careless enemy by jumping on him with your aatroxQ.png and use all your abilities at once.

Plus, don't forget you have the best champion to do the herald of the rift, so ask your jungler to help you to do it early in (it's very easy by switching the target of the herald seeing your sustain), or wait to have some AD and AS to do it on your own. But pay attention to it, it would be a shame to waste an incredible advantage of your unplayed champion.

Mid-game

Now that you have some damages and attack speed, you can face most champions in 1v1 with a crazy healing, great damages and enough CC so chase a target or to flee a group of champions trying to hunt you down.

This is the phase where Aatrox is the strongest.

You can roam a little, but don't forget your champion is not very strong in teamfights. The best thing you can do is to keep farming and pushing your lane without forgetting to ward in case of gank and to 12.png at the most opportune moment, especially to do the dragon, the herald or even the baron.

Late-game

Now you are an incredible war machine with crazy healing and damages and a good defense making it impossible for the enemy team to one shot you.
You're insane in duel, especially long trades, but you also have a very good burst giving you the possibility to kill a isolated carry before it can react (with the fighter stuff).
But your lack of mobility and your weakness to grievous wounds makes it hard for you to really shine in teamfights, but you can try to splitpush and then 12.png behind or in the middle of the enemy team.
