Summoner Spells Back to Top

Pretty simple. I run tele majority of the time to help my team at objectives. Ignite is good for situational matchups and/or if you want extra lane power.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

12-0-18 with grasp will be the most common mastery page setup. I use this about 80% of the time. Run this if the enemy has any hard cc. This includes stuns, knock ups/knock backs, and anything that prevents Aatrox from auto attacking. This setup is safe and reliable.

However, if the enemy team lacks hard cc, you can get away with a 18-0-12 setup, using Warlords Bloodlust in place of grasp. This mastery adds a surprising amount of sustain for Aatrox.
The key when choosing your masteries is knowing how consistent your dps will be against your enemy.

Maxing aatroxE.png is the norm for any Aatrox build. It is his main poking ability and covers an entire minion wave allowing him to push quickly. You need the cooldown to go down as quickly as possible and the magic damage it deals is hard to itemize against since it scales with ad.

Maxing aatroxQ.png or aatroxW.png is based on your match up. Maxing his Q will reduce the cooldown, allowing you to contribute more cc to teamfights and help you against mobile champions. Maxing his W will give a small boost to your dueling power. 70% of the time I max W since the bonus damage on Blood Price will add more health to your bloodwell, giving more attack speed and outputting more damage, and Blood Thirst will heal slightly more health.
Max his ultimate at the appropriate levels of 6,11 and 16.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Core Items

Situational Items

Doran start is typical will most matchups. Long sword with bead is my alternative if i feel like the matchup is strongly in my favor. This will let you rush 3077.png on your first back and can be overwhelming for your opponent in the early game.

The goal is to rush 3074.png and 3053.png, then build to adapt.
3065.png combined with hydra and your runes will almost remove any fear of greavious wounds from your mind. This gives your sustain a big boost and unless the enemy lacks magic damage, there is no reason not to build this.
3124.png was recently changed to apply on hit effects twice when you reach max stacks. This works with both forms of your W allowing you to deal more damage and sustain more health in combat. This item is not worth building if you are behind, unless you wish to abandon your team to split push.
3153.png is decent. It gives solid stats for Aatrox but should not be rushed. Hydra offers more laning power. Build this if you wish to shred through the enemy tanks quickly.
All tank items are situational and you should build to adapt to your enemy.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

His silence doesn't really effect you. His natural sustain makes the matchup feel like a a constant back and forth. Constantly poke him with aatroxE.png and abuse the early damage of aatroxW.png. Your build path counters his true damage ult and your dps outscales him very quickly.

VS

Darius

Medium

Darius is a mixed bag or concerns. He has sustained damage that gives him an edge in melee matchups, but you have more consistent healing. Your passive counters his ult and forces him the commit more to finishing you with his standard abilities, giving you more time to unleash more auto attacks. Focus on dodging the edge of his dariuscleave.png, and you will outlast him with you poke and healing.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

This matchup is suicide for the good doctor. When both champions are in their ults, a lovely slap fight begins where neither can kill the other. Aatrox has a significant advantage before level 6 and can shove Mundo out of lane very quickly. Maintain your dps with auto attacks and out sustain him.

VS

Ekko

Medium

He cannot kill you in a 1v1 situation at any point in the game. Your sustain wins this matchup and the only difficulty is the fact that Ekko is a very annoying champion. Keep your health topped off during the laning phase and use your E when he attempts to engage you.

VS

Fiora

Medium

This is mostly a skill matchup. Your sustain helps you recover from her harass, but the key here is to engage when her abilities are on cd. Simply poke with E and bait out her fioraflurry.png. When she ults, hug a wall and sustain yourself with aatroxW.png empowered by aatroxR.png.

VS

Fizz

Medium

This is a repeat of the ekko matchup. He is annoying but will waste most of his time trying to burst you.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Gangplank has a very passive aggressive playstyle. He cannot win a slap fight with you so focus on forcing him out of lane with aatroxQ.png engage. Passive top laners will have a hard time with Aatrox.

VS

Garen

Easy

Use your E to keep his passive turned off and he will have a rough day. This is basically the Darius matchup if Darius had no damage.

VS

Gnar

Medium

His range is his only advantage here. To work around this. all in him with a q w fade away e combo. he will be forced to jump away and kite. When he is in mega form, try to engage him when he is close to transforming back. Make him use his abilities in mega force so he will be vulnerable in mini form.

VS

Graves

Easy

A general rule of thumb: you have the same amount of damage as ranged top laners but you will always have a larger health pool. Abuse your early damage with all ins and rejoice as his playstyle forces him to melee form you.

VS

Jax

Medium

This matchup would be harder if aatroxW.png was negated by jaxcounterstrike.png. This matchup is a question of who can finish their core items first. Jax is a stronger melee dps fighter, but he is very item dependent and Aatrox has alot of innate tools to shut him down early on. Bait his counter strike, then all in him while he is alone. Jax's main problem is his reliance on mana. abuse your early sustain and force his hand.

VS

Jayce

Easy

Jayce is crippled by his mana cost and is extremely item dependent. He is not tanky enough to melee fight you and he isn't mobile enough to kite you from ranged.

VS

Kayle

Easy

Your sustain wins this matchup. All in her whenever you can. Her strength is her dps but her sustain is garbage compared to yours.

VS

Kennen

Easy

Annoying but not mobile enough to handle your all ins. Bait and dodge his kennenshurikenhurlmissile1.png  and you will find success.

VS

Malphite

Hard

Honestly this matchup is dodge worthy. Malphite is the bane of Aatrox's existence. landslide.png is an aoe attack speed slow that basically removes any hope of putting out damage. Your goal here is to harass with aatroxE.png and a single auto from aatroxW.png. You cannot stand near this champion at any point in the game. Focus on his team and you can work around him.

VS

Maokai

Easy

He lacks the sustain to stay in melee combat with you. Clear the waves quickly with aatroxE.png, then all in him and watch him cry.

VS

Nasus

Easy
wither.png is a pain for mobile champs, but when you have innate attack speed that puts you on par with jax, Nasus can only put you down so far. Early game you outdamage him greatly and push faster. Harass him and keep him on his toes. Late game can be annoying but in the end you are far more useful in team fights.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

The key to fighting Nautilus is to shred through his shield quickly and maintain combat with him. His damage is heavily dependent on his shield. Without it he cannot fight you.

VS

Olaf

Medium

The advantage here is his need for mana and his lack of mobility. Poke him down with aatroxE.png, then force fights inside your minions wave. Keep in mind his dps increases as he loses health. Focus on harassing and only all in him when he is alone.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Annoying but his block doesn't effect aatroxW.png. Abuse his need for mana early and heal through his harass. Try to make early trades by clearing the wave fast with aatroxE.png, then all ining him.

VS

Poppy

Easy

She is good at harassing melee champs but lacks the sustain to stay in combat for more than a few seconds. Focus on clearing the waves fast so you can engage her safely with your minions.

VS

Quinn

Medium

More annoying than graves, but squishier. All ins are the key here. Bait quinnE.png then destroy her.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Renekton has strong burst that can be intimidating early on. Your dps will outscale him and you will probably end up in many slap fights with him in the mid game. Focus on harassing him and waiting for his engage. Once his abilities are on cooldown, you can freely retaliate.

VS

Riven

Medium

Her advantage is her stun. You need to be a strong opportunist with this. Wait for her to use her stun, then look for the all in. She is not an auto attacker like you so force her abilities on cd.

VS

Rumble

Easy

Rumble is not a tank nor does he have sustain. Simple case of harassing with aatroxE.png, then going for the all in.

VS

Ryze

Medium

This champion is a cancer. Try to engage him early and force him to be more defensive in lane. Ward carefully and try to rush spirit visage after hydra instead of steraks.

VS

Shen

Easy

Same rule as maokai. Clear waves quickly, then all in him and force his spells. You should also try to maintain vision of him so you can cancel shenstandunited.png with aatroxQ.png.

VS

Singed

Easy

His annoying playstyle might work to your favor. You have sustain that counters his proxy strategy, allowing you to farm without worry of harass. This matchup is more about clearing the waves fast so you can 1v1 him as much as possible.

VS

Sion

Easy

He is malphite without the attack speed slow. His high health pool will keep him at odds with you but your dps can still win the trades. Save aatroxQ.png and try to maintain melee combat with him. His need for mana will hold him down and your healing will keep you in the lane.

VS

Teemo

Hard

This is cancer. This matchup is rare due to the viability of teemo. Focus more on farming than fighting and try to coordinate more with your team to force skirmishes. Your goal is to force him out of lane to help his team.

VS

Trundle

Medium

This is a slap fight from the very beginning. His stat stealing kit can be overwhelming but he can only steal your raw stats. Your dps will still be high against him and his sustain is dependent on your minions dying near him. Clear the waves quickly so you can fight him with ease.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

You win in almost every category. His crits are the only thing going for him. You are basically the viable version of Tryndamere. Abuse his low health pool early and force him out of lane.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

Your sustain is consistent and your mobility will be his fear. Abuse his high cooldowns early and push the lane fast.

VS

Volibear

Easy

A slap fight. Your sustain will make it difficult for him to execute you and your mixed damage will force him to split his itemization. Force fights inside your minion wave and bait his volibearq.png and volibearr.png.

VS

Wukong

Medium

Very annoying but once he uses his abilities you can engage him will little worry. He has zero sustain and is mana dependent so force his hand early and keep him backing.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Yasuo can be annoying but your higher health pool with prove to give you an edge. Focus more on farming than fighting. once you have hydra you can clear the wave fast and fight him with your minions.

Tips and tricks Back to Top

Aatrox has alot of power behind his kit that most players don't understand.

 Certain things to consider:
1. If you are in a slap fight with someone, DO NOT use any of your abilities outside of managing aatroxW.png. Your abilities cost health and using them for the purpose of dealing damage will only help your opponent. aatroxQ.png and aatroxE.png both have two uses. One is a gap closer that also knocks up enemies. The other slows and deals magic damage over a long area. Always try to make use of both features of his abilities. Melee champs do not have your sustain so you will always have an edge in slap fights.

2. Hydra is the only damage item you need and works for all builds. BOTRK is nerfed and doesn't offer the wave clear power of hydra.

3. Always build tank items to counter the damage dealers. Steraks is a must and works well against both ad and ap carries.

4. Always look to top off your bloodwell. A maxed out bloodwell in the late game makes you very dangerous. This is more powerful when in your ultimate. before a teamfight starts look for jungle camps and minions to fill your well.

5. His split push is fast and you should always look for free objectives. His attack speed is one notch under jax but is still strong enough to shred through towers.

6. Keep in mind that your jump can be interrupted. Save it for a surprise engage and try to keep track of your opponents' abilities.

7. The 30% attack speed rune page GOES A LONG WAY. I made this page when i realized how pointless flat ad is with his kit. When in a teamfight where your passive is popped you lose alot of attack speed. However, 30% bonus attack speed scales hard into the late game and makes this period of weakness almost nonexistent. You can now afford to keep Blood Price on to fill up your Bloodwell again.
