Summoner Spells Back to Top

Flash is always good, the flash Q combo can set up a favorable team fight

TP to make plays and split push
Ignite if you think you can snowball easily

I still recommend taking TP, it's always useful

Masteries Back to Top

NOTES :

Ferocity tree, you can switch Bounty Hunter by Oppressor if you don't feel like you will kill 3 different enemies or more. Getting Oppressor also allows you to do more damage to slowed target (by your E ability).
I take Bounty Hunter because I know I will "assassinate" different people, and the damage bonus is permanent!

Resolve tree is good logic, the 8% increased life-steal is a must-have

There isn't a perfect path, but this is roughly what I do each game

Max W and E together. Prefer E for poke and W for all ins. Don't leave Q too late, leveling it up brings the CD down, which is useful to have more mobility in the mid game

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Must-have

Core Items

the core items!! get this every game
you will certainly want to pick these two every game as well
    choose the one you need
This item is very good, but you lose 1 slot for a defensive item

Situational Items

    Resistance
    more damage
BUILDPATH
Starting items : Doran's blade, HP pot
- Rush Tiamat + Blade of the Ruined King
>Tiamat is good to wave clear, plus giving a decent amount of damage.
>You will need attack speed soon so the recurved bow is a must.
>Vampiric scepter is always good early, it gives you extra sustain.
>BotRK is a must have on Aatrox. Attack speed, life-steal, and bonus damage. All good stats!

- First Defensive item (To counter Toplaner) :
>Againt AD : Dead Man's Plate
>Against AD Crit : Randuin's Omen
>Against AP : Spirit Visage

- Boots : Tabi against Heavy AD, Mercurie's against CC comps and AP.

- Complete Tiamat into Ravenous Hydra.
>If behind prefer starting your second defensive item, as you will need to assist your team to come back!

- Second defensive item (To counter team) :
>Againt AD : Dead Man's Plate
>Against AD Crit : Randuin's Omen
>Against AP : Spirit Visage
I highly recommend getting Spirit Visage if enemy team has 1 AP champion, as it boosts the life steal income by A LOT.

- Last item : Whatever you like. More tanky if needed, or more offensive items. Tanks items can be Warmogs, and offensive items can be Death's Dance.

NOTES :

>Of course change a little bit the order depending on the situation (buying early cloth for example first back if you need it).

>If ever you find yourself stomping the lane and your team does very well, you can follow this path (that I use a lot :3) :
BotRK, Ravenous Hydra, Death's Dance, Tabi/Mercurie's, Defensive items OR more offensive items (risky!).
I wouldn't recommend building that if you are new to aatrox, as it gives you absolutely no defense early (very squishy). Plus this build path isn't good against CC chain teams and burst champions in the early game.

Darius

Medium

poke with E, stay out of his Q range

VS

Fiora

Medium

Stick to walls when she ults you, and keep hitting. In lane poke with E

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Don't get hit by his barrels and you're fine

VS

Garen

Easy

Just before he silences you be sure to switch your W to heal more (toggled off) because you won't be able to toggle it while silenced, and if toggled on you will basically kill yourself and help garen!

VS

Gnar

Easy

Very simple, poke E, bait his jump then all in

VS

Illaoi

Medium

A bit tricky, but if you can avoid her tentacles in lanes you will be fine

VS

Irelia

Medium

This one is tricky, either you stomp or she stomps. Her stun is really powerful against you, so be careful

VS

Jax

Easy

An easy one. If he jaxcounterstrike.png, just move around and don't hit him.

VS

Malphite

Hard

He has massive armor + slowseismicshard.png + AS slowlandslide.png.

VS

Maokai

Hard

Maokai is very tanky and can deal bursts of damage and run away, greatly out damaging you in trades

VS

Olaf

Medium

Play passive early game, his olafaxethrowcast.png damage is very high and he can spam olafaxethrowcast.png a lot

VS

Pantheon

Hard

How to play Aatrox throughout the game Back to Top

Early game

Farm cs, try to avoid fights (unless you have a clear advantage). Stack blood well with W on, and switch back to heal when needed. E on your opponent when he comes to cs a minion. If he comes close enough, try a E+W (DMG proc on) combo. They will lose a good chunk of HP and they will be afraid of you. Heal back up when you can on minions after trading, and continue focusing on minions, gold is really important early. Also very important don't try to extend a fight, once you used your abilities they won't come back as quick as your enemy's abilities, so you'll be left with your autoattacks. Unless you can kill the enemy don't extend the fight!

Midgame

Stay in your lane, and farm. Continue to CS as much as possible. Get the turret as quick as possible (new first blood turret!). After taking the turret and pushing the next wave, ward the enemy jungle and try to counter jungle. Search for opportunities to gank mid with your jungler, or try to find an occasion to TP botlane to give your adc a lead. If there's nothing to do JUST STAY TOP AND FARM. Aatrox is not good in team fights in the midgame, don't bother about grouping, unless you have a clear advantage and you can get an ace or something. What you want to focus is push and cs. Think of yourself as a Tryndamere that will push forever and tilt the enemy team. If you successfully push like you should the enemy jungler will be "forced to come", but you will have warded (remember, ward enemy jungle before pushing!), so you can plan your escape ahead. Your botlane and midlane will have no pressure and will benefit your jungle ganks. Also while the jungler is topside trying to gank, your team can do the dragon. Just ping the enemy jungle and write jungle topside whenever he is, strong info for your team. With your lane pushed, don't hesitate doing herald, and ping the mid/jungler for help. Quite op to push and duel. But get herald at around 15 minutes, so that the buff will stay on you until 35 minutes in, where generally the game ends!

Late game

This becomes interesting. You will start grouping with your team, and doing objectives with them. Don't forget to always keep an eye on toplane, and try to keep the lane pushed every time, as it will force someone to split from the group and depush. If your team does ok continue to split push top, put more pressure. You can easily get a free inhib turret if your team pushes mid/bot at the same time. And when the very end approaches and you got top inhib, stick with your team, be sure to have your passive up and engage on the back line with Q+R+aa, they'll probably use everything on you, so when your team is here the enemy team will have nothing to defend themselves and it'll most probably be a won fight (and game!). To do this technique you can also try some traps and baits, in the average Elo (silver/gold) is works well!
