Summoner Spells Back to Top

I always take flash teleport in top lane. You can try ignite if you want, but if you get ganked and shut down its going to be a lot harder to come back.

Masteries Back to Top

Fervor is the best keystone for Aatrox. Some people have talked about grasp but I don't think it would outweigh fervor at all this patch. Runic armor is really good for Aatrox.

Start W in every matchup except range that can harass you a lot level 1, such as teemo or maybe kennen and gnar, in which case you would start e and farm from range, getting level 3 without taking a ton of harass.

Since the rework, the scaling per point in W is way better now, so we max w in most matchups. Maxing W gives the best dueling and all in potential, max W in every melee matchup unless you get behind / killed early and need to farm safely. It is probably best to max E in annoying lanes where you want to farm and wait for your jungler (kennen, teemo, gnar, annoying poke champs). Maxing E lets you farm + poke without getting autod to death while you last hit in those matchups.

Q base damage doesnt change much so we max it last.
Side note about Aatrox Q... It is the only ability he has that scales with total AD, so if you use it as your last ability to proc your passive or while your passive is up, it will do more damage.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Standard
    Teemo, gnar, kennen, etc
AD heavy team and annoying lane like renekton where you want 1st item ninja tabi

Core Items

This item gives you lifesteal, attack speed, and an active that makes it hard for you to be kited. Core item, buy this every game, almost always 1st item.
This item gives great waveclear, health, and a lot of damage. Synergizes well with new Aatrox since he scales well with health, and so does this item. Also gives a nice AA reset. I prefer this over ravenous but some people like ravenous. I build this second 60% of the time.
Your 2 boot options. Ninja tabi is incredibly strong, buy it first item against heavy AD champs like riven, renekton, pantheon. Merc treads are a good pickup against teams with a lot of cc or heavy magic damage teams. Rushing tabi is good, rushing merc treads is not good, get bork before mercs.

Situational Items

This item is alright, I dont buy it much because I prefer other items slightly more but its not a bad buy.
If the enemy is stacking armor, this item is really nice. You will be a bit squishy building this but everything it gives is nice. The 20% cdr also lets you keep your passive up more often. I build this 2nd or 3rd when I build it.
This item is really good on Aatrox. The health is super nice and scales well with Aatrox %hp W heal, and also scales with titanic hydra damage. Makes you tanky while still doing a lot of damage, and keeps those pesky carries from kiting you super hard. If i go this i usually go bork --> titanic --> mallet
Some people like the deaths dance into PD build but its not for me. Slightly more damage than bork titanic but way less survivability and you just die instantly.
Can be good against heavy ad teams, really good against riven but I dont build this that often. Better on true tanks, Aatrox is more of a dueler that builds health.
Enemy team has caitlyn and yasuo? This item can be a good 3rd or 4th pickup against heavy ad / crit teams, I dont build it super often but if you are behind dont be afraid to build tanky.
Against heavy AP teams this item is great. Synergizes well with Aatrox, good 3rd 4th or even 5th item pickup.
This item is alright, I prefer wits end because it gives attack speed and is much cheaper, but if you like this item and it makes sense in the game, go for it. Visage or wits end usually better pickups in my opinion.
Some people like trinity force burst but I think its way too much money for a sheen proc on Aatrox. Other items are better
Can be good late game if you arent dying at all and need to carry. Pretty risky buy, but when its stacked it goes off. Dont build this 1st or 2nd item or you will be bad in teamfights. Works well with titanic hydra.
This item only costs 2500 gold, gives you a lot of magic resist and attack speed, and makes you harder to itemize against because of the on hit magic damage. I really like this item and its easy to build into. I prefer this over maw and i buy it second item against heavy ap teams, together with bork you do a ton of damage.
Heavy AD team and you have a lot of hp from mallet / titanic? Sure
Ive never built this on Aatrox but I can see potential, just not my playstyle
In theory this would be great on Aatrox but I never see a good time to build it. Its not the best 1st or 2nd item, and if you build it later youre very squishy. Maybe if youre fed and wanna meme idk
Heavy AD team? Sure why not
If enemy team has malz / veigar and you need to carry hard. Very rarely do i build this but it can help you 1 shot the enemy back line and save a losing game.
I dont really build this item but some people like DD into PD. Not for me because you attack super slow and just get kited

General build path ignoring boots is BORK --> Tiamat --> Titanic --> Mallet OR Cleaver --> Situational

Against heavy AP, go Bork --> Wits End --> Mallet

I dont like building Aatrox full glass cannon like i did pre rework, since he scales way better with health now. I find that more damage later in the game doesnt really help as much as more survivability. With the items i build, I have a lot of health as well as a lot of damage and can pretty much dunk any back line champs, while still being front line for my team. For example, a build of bork titanic mallet  will give you a lot of damage, but it will also help you stay alive in fights, which is what you want on Aatrox. If Aatrox can stay alive in teamfights, he will carry the game.

If you decide to build full damage, you are not going to be near as useful in teamfights and are just going to get bursted down instantly before you can proc your passive.

I think the best way to build Aatrox currently is stacking health + damage items and somewhat ignoring resistances unless the enemy team is easy to itemize against. For example, bork titanic mallet cleaver is a great build. All of these items give you health, but also give you damage and other great stats. You will be able to dunk people while not getting 1 shot in fights, which is what we want! Building resistance items like dead mans plate, sunfire, or visage can be ok but I think it is not as good as damage + health items. Maybe pick up 1 of those as a 4th or 5th item depending on the enemy comp.

VS

Akali

Hard

Aatrox has the slight edge pre 6, but once you are both level 6 Akali wins easily. She can use her W and you'll just have to sit there doing nothing until she decides to hit you again. Pink wards dont reveal her, so you cant auto her while she can burst you down immediately. Dont try fighting her post 6 you'll lose, unless you got a large lead pre 6. Make sure to bully her pre 6 but beware jungle pressure because youll have to sustain off the wave and end up pushing.

VS

Darius

Hard

Darius will bully you levels 1-2, thats ok. Get what farm you can while he shoves into your tower, and sustain under tower with your W. Once you are 3 if you can stack your passive before fighting you can win but its a hard lane. Ask jungler for ganks since darius will shove and has no mobility, plus you have hard cc in your q.

You out scale darius pretty hard just dont die to him.

VS

Fiora

Medium

This is a pretty even lane and I enjoy it a lot. Level 1 smack her with blood price W when she tries to cs. Whenever she tries to poke you with her q, auto her. Keep your passive stacked and just sustain with W unless she tries to all in. If she lands her riposte you will lose, the attack speed slow destroys you. Don't use q unless she uses her W. If she holds her w for 10 seconds, you hold your q for 10 seconds too.

At 6 its still an even fight, as long as you have your passive ready before she tries to all in you. Dont engage onto her or she will riposte you and youll lose. Wait for her to overextend to try to kill.

If she takes ignite, dont fight her in an all in or you will 100% lose.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Start w and sustain his poke level 1, by level 3 you can stack your passive and go on him. Pretty easy lane.

VS

Gnar

Hard

Dorans shield into ninja tabi 1st item is a pretty good idea here. This lane is pretty hard, dont expect to solo kill him as he can just kite you and poke you. Max E in this lane. If you can stack your passive and get on him with your q, you can try to all in, but otherwise just farm and wait for jungler. Bork good item.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Dodge Illaoi's abilities if you can. If you can stack your passive levels 3-5 and get on her, you will win the fight easily. Once she's 6 if you dont already have a lead, dont try it. Your time to win this lane is levels 3-5. Even if you do have a sizable lead, she can kill you with her R if you try to all in. Be smart.

VS

Irelia

Medium

I havent really played against Irelia yet post rework but I imagine this would be an ok lane. She doesnt have much burst and is a sustain dueler, which is what Aatrox is, except Aatrox does it better. Irelia is weak levels 2-3, and Aatrox is very strong level 3, so fight her then if you can. If she uses her E ireliaequilibriumstrike.png and doesnt stun you with it, you can kill her. Building health against irelia is good since her damage is largely true damage.

VS

Jax

Hard

This matchup is very difficult. Contrary to popular belief, you lose early pretty handily. Get what farm you can and ask for ganks.

Keep your passive stacked when you can. If he jumps on you  and uses his E, walk away until it ends, then re engage with q and your passive. If he's good he will have saved his q and will just Q away and you'll have a bad time.

Dont get solo killed because unless he messes up really badly, you lose.

VS

Kennen

Hard

Very annoying lane that you cant really win assuming they play well. You can start W and just heal off the wave and make him take minion aggro, or you can start E and farm from afar level 1.

Level 3-5 you can win fights. Stack your passive to 3 or 4 before jumping onto him, proc your passive and all in. He will be forced to E away, you will win the trade and can sustain off minion wave. Not a bad idea to build merc treads early if enemy team has more AP.

Once he hits level 6  you lose again. Not very smart to try all inning him when he has his ult because he can kite you and you'll have a bad time. Farm up!

VS

Nautilus

Easy

Super easy lane. Level 3 and on just stack your passive and jump on him with your blood price damage, he cant really do anything about it except either give up cs or die repeatedly. Easy solo kills.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Pantheon tops almost exclusively take ignite and bully you in lane. Start cloth refillable and get ninja tabi. You will be =[ in this lane, just farm and out scale him. If you try to fight him and he has ignite, you will definitely lose and get baited by his passive auto attack block.

Tell your bot lane to beware of panth ult ganks when he hits 6 and backs. Somehow bot lanes are always surprised when this happens.

FARM AND OUTSCALE!

VS

Poppy

Medium

Aatrox struggles against people who can burst him down faster than he can sustain. Poppy cannot do this. She will likely build a sunfire 1st item, while you build bork 1st item. Pretty even lane in duels, but you can sustain much better than she can. Her poppyw.png ability stops your Q from working, which is incredibly annoying. Dont get stunned on walls or you'll lose the fight. Focus on cs because its hard to solo kill a poppy.

VS

Renekton

Hard

You lose this lane. Start dorans shield or cloth + refillable. Start W, you can trade level 1 fine and sustain on the wave, hit him with your 3rd W blood price hit if you can.

Take E second and be prepared for him to shove you in. You cant really fight him unless your jungler ganks or you have 4 stacks of your passive and he just walks up to you.

Buy ninja tabi 1st item unless the entire rest of the enemy team is AP / hard cc. Once you get bork + tabi this gets way more doable. Just dont die early, especially level 2-4

VS

Riven

Medium

This feels easier post rework since Aatrox has higher base health. Rush ninja tabi and you can win. If she goes on you, auto her to death and slow her with E, then re engage with Q when she tries to disengage. Not a super hard lane unless the riven is extremely good.

VS

Rumble

Medium

If the rumble is really good this is an even lane. If he's not, you can dunk him. If the enemy team has more magic damage, wits end is a good item. Try to kill him levels 3-5 with your passive up. Once he gets 6 its more of an even lane and he can kite you well.

VS

Swain

Easy

Every time I've played this matchup I get huge. Swain cannot beat Aatrox. You can start W and just auto the wave, he will try to poke you but you can out heal his damage and he will take minion aggro.

Level 3-4, stack your passive and jump on him, smack him with your blood price W. You win these fights pretty handily. If you can sidestep his snare even better.

VS

Teemo

Hard

This lane is pretty bad. Start dorans shield and E and ask for ganks. If the teemo took ignite just accept that youre going to be down cs and wait for jungler. If teemo took TP, you can fight him if you stack your passive well before going on him. When you both hit 6 he will only have 1 charge of teemorcast.png so thats a good time to fight.

Max E in this lane

Long story short wait for jungler ganks.

VS

Trundle

Easy

He will win an all in level 1 handily so be careful. Once you hit level 3 and on you win this lane. Buy tabi if it makes sense against their team, otherwise just get bork. Pretty easy after level 2.

If you go on him post 6, dont ult if he can just pillar you and run away.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

You win this lane pre 6. Start dorans blade and bully him with w blood price hits before he can stack his passive with auto attacks.  Level 3 dunk him with your passive up and zone him from farm. Build ninja tabi. I only put this matchup as medium because if you get ganked and tryndamere gets a kill on you, he can be oppressive.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

This can be tricky levels 1-2, dont let him get level 2 first and all in you. Once youre both level 3+ you win easily. Dont miss q when hes dashing through minions. Lategame consider a randuins. Early ninja tabi is not a bad idea.

VS

Yorick

Medium

Pretty even lane until you get bork, then you win. You cant really kill him because he will just kite you and throw ghouls at you, but you can farm them with your w for an easy 5 gold (gg). Dont fight without passive up.

General Playstyle & Tips Back to Top

Aatrox is one of the best 1v1 duelers in the game. He excels in 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3s. Hes ok in teamfight 5v5s but since he will get kited, ccd, and exhausted, its best to build a lot of health and survivability (mallet, titanic hydra) so that you can effectively initiate for your team.

Aatrox is not as good level 1 and 2 as he was pre rework, but he is still good at small trades in lane where he can heal back up with his w. By level 3 Aatrox becomes much stronger, and can reliably proc his passive. In most lanes you dont want to fight an all in level 1-2, you'll probably lose. Level 3-4 however, you can proc passive and will win most fights. Note that since Aatrox is such an aggressive laner, he gets ganked first in most games. Expect the gank around 3 minutes, its coming.

Level 6 Aatrox is very strong and can fight almost anyone in the game as long as they dont just kite him away (see: kennen).

Aatrox scales much better post rework than he did before the rework, since he can reliably build health and teamfight now instead of just being a lifestealing all-in split pusher. I think building bork 1st item then stacking health items is the way to build Aatrox currently. You still get damage out of titanic hydra, mallet, and cleaver, but they all give Aatrox health so that he can not only do a ton of damage but have survivability too. In teamfight situations, your damage doesnt matter so much as how long you can stay alive. Im not saying build all tank items, but if you get killed in the first cc that hits you, you're not going to be useful in a teamfight.
