Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png Flash

You ALWAYS want to bring flash on Alistar. It is SO good. It helps you set up plays by going in with your pulverize.png, escape from tricky situations, or position yourself better to land better headbutt.png. It's definitely a must have for any game.

3.png Exhaust

Honestly, I prefer 14.png to 3.png because it provides better lane dominance, which leads to you being able to carry better in a game, but 3.png is definitely better in a team match-up or a game that you know will end up in late game. I also always get it if the enemy team is built more around assassins instead of having one or two tanks, although this is more rare with the current tank meta going around.

14.png Ignite

Why do I choose this over 3.png? Well, it provides the extra early game damage to surprise lane opponents at early levels, stops the enemy adc's heal from being annoying, and all around provides a good way to shut down opponents building heavy healing items. The early kills for yourself or your adc allows you to snowball your lane FAST, and trust, kills on the cow are DEFINITELY good for your team.

Masteries Back to Top

Keystone: Thunderlord's Decree

This is so good on 12.png. Just by using your headbutt.png pulverize.png combo, your next auto or alistarpassive.png will proc the third hit and deal that much extra damage to your opponents in lane in the early game. Remember, the biggest goal of this playstyle is to ramp up early game damage so you can start snowballing ASAPTo access Thunderlord's we'll have to spend 17 points in the Cunning tree.

Cunning:

Wanderer vs Savagery

You want to share some of that cow to everyone, so the 3% movement speed really helps you get across the map to save your allies or start some big plays and catch opponents off guard. Plus, you really won't be attacking minions much so that's pretty obvious.

Runic Affinity vs Secret Stash vs Assassin

Since you won't be getting buffs on purpose or ever alone basically, secret stash is the way to go for more early game sustain.

Merciless vs Meditation

This one's tricky until you look more in depth. The mana regen from meditation allows you to stay in lane much longer to either heal or do more damage with your combo. It reduces time you need to recall for mana issues and the cow can't really do much without mana to back him up.
Merciless is good but you have to think what 5% means. It means that every 100 damage you do,  you did 5 from merciless. It really has a negligible impact in the early game (especially when even alistarpassive.png does more) and so the mana actually probably helps you do more damage.

Bandit vs Dangerous Game

You need bandit to get some steady income and get your items. You won't be farming because your support so you have to make do right haha.

Precision vs Intelligence

Both are good, especially in the early game, but Intelligence just provides too much in the end game for you to turn it down on 12.png. The extra 5% brings you to 45% CDR and helps you cast your long cd abilities more often and really help amplify your teamfight presence.

Resolve

Recovery vs Unyielding

The extra armor and magic resist really help boost your tankiness because you will probably be one of the frontlines for your team. Also, you have triumphantroar.png for that small health sustain if you really need it.

Explorer vs Tough Skin

Again, its the movement speed that helps you start fights and make plays in the mid and end games. You really need it in order to get the catches you need to carry your team to victory.

Runic Armor vs Veteran Scars

In general, if any champion has a built in mechanic that gives a heal or shield, one should get runic armor. Even though triumphantroar.png doesn't heal much, you'll use it enough for it to be way more efficient than the 45 hp will ever be, even for the early game.

Insight vs Perseverance

This is a no brainer. 12.png needs his flash to make the biggest plays so the more often its up, the better for him and his team.

alistarpassive.png Trample

After using an ability, Alistar stampedes for 3 seconds, dealing damage per second to nearby enemies and structures.

pulverize.png Pulverize

Alistar knocks up enemies around him for 1 second, stunning them for 0.5 seconds on landing, and dealing damage.

headbutt.png Headbutt

Alistar dashes to the target enemy, dealing magic damage, stunning them for 1 second, and knocking them back during the duration. This can be combo'd into pulverize.png to knock them up on impact.

triumphantroar.png Triumphant Roar

Alistar roars, healing himself and nearby allies for 33% of the amount. This skill's cooldown is refreshed by 2 seconds every time an enemy dies near Alistar.

ferocioushowl.png Unbreakable Will

Alistar removes all hostile crowd control from him on cast and grants himself bonus AD as well as 70% damage reduction for the next 7 seconds.

Skill Order

 Unbreakable Will ferocioushowl.png

As with most champs, we max Alistar's ult first because it reduces it's cooldown and allows him to use it more often to be that giant wall in the frontline for your team and start tower dives.

 Pulverize pulverize.png

You want to max Q first because it provides a shorter cooldown for his AoE CC to hit the enemy team and make plays or peel for your carries. In addition, the extra damage it provides in lane will help your adc burst their bot lane down fast.

 Headbutt headbutt.png

Maxing W second puts it at a lower cooldown for the midgame teamfights. This is the prime peel ability you have for your carries. Once you hit 45% CDR, you can use the combo to initiate a fight and then peel back to use headbutt to knock off pesky assassins or tanks away from your carries.

 Triumphant Roar triumphantroar.png

Since the heal is really inefficient for your teamates and increasing the level increases the spells cost, it's best to leave this ability for last and use the heal more sparingly in both lane and fights unless you know you have a large enough mana pool.

VS

Annie

Hard

Her early game poke will be annoying and she can blow up your adc before you can peel her off. Try to get early engages and win before she can start laying down pain.

VS

Bard

Hard

Bard actually counters Alistar well. He keeps you zoned out and has really good poke in lane. His ult also can stop your mid track and makes it hard for you to peel.

VS

Blitzcrank

Easy

If he hooks you, good start a fight. You'll win because they used damage to get you close, and now you can mess up their carry.

VS

Brand

VS

Braum

VS

Janna

VS

Thresh

You win trades. Block hooks for your carry and bring the fight to them.

VS

Zilean

Hard

He can zone you out easily with slows and bombs. Be careful and wait for help or a slip up usually.

Why Alistar? Back to Top

Alistar is a unique champion that provides heavy CC, good peels, and extremely high tankiness to your team. He can initiate fights and dive towers which makes him a great fight starter and secondary tank. In addition, his ability to headbutt.png carries into his team allows him to make catches that will snowball leads and help win teamfights. He also provides a large AoE sustain for sieges or longer fights. Overall, he's a support that provides everything his role needs to do which makes him a solid pick throughout his time in League of Legends.

Plus he's a cow- I mean bull. How cool is that?

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

headbutt.png + pulverize.png

Headbutt Pulverize Combo

This is how Alistar gets in on the opponent and it really allows you to CC down the entire enemy team in one go. After the update, you can use pulverize.png anytime Alistar is in mid flight to land the combo.

pulverize.png + 4.png

Flash Pulverize Combo

This is Alistar's easiest method to get up to the enemy carry and knock him into your team with headbutt.png. Make sure to use pulverize.png before flash in order to get an instant knock up to the location you flash to to prevent any high reaction speed players to get out of your lockdown.

ferocioushowl.png

Ulting Early

Your ult provides 60-90 attack damage. At level 6, 60 attack damage provides a big punch to your trading. By ulting early you deal much more damage in the fight which can result in a cleaner trade and potentially guaranteeing a kill you might not have gotten if you did not ult earlier.
