Summoner Spells Back to Top

I would allmost allways recommend to take Exhaust, because it's by far stronger in the Mid- and Lategame, to take down own large damage-source. You want to take Ignite against alot of heals, like Soraka, Dr. Mundo, Swain, etc.

EDIT: With the nerfs to Exhaust, both summoners are equaly good, depending on what you need.

If you have an ADC that can peel for himself and hold the lane 1v2 without trouble, take Ignite and roam to mid or top as soon as you have mobi boots. Alistar was once a great jungler and his ganks are still on top.

If you have to babysit your ADC or face alot of Assassins in the enemy team. Exhaust is still the better option but make sure to use it defensivly to negate incomming damage from a carry. Don't waste it just to chase someone down.

Masteries Back to Top

Cunning

Not much to say about this. These 12 points are the same on allmost any Support.

Resolve

Recovery vs. Unyielding

Recovery = Earlygame, Unyielding = Lategame

For Aistar, who has not the best of all Earlygames should go with Recovery, but against a lane without much pressure I take Unyielding.

Explorer vs. Siegemaster vs Tough Skin

Explorer = Roaming, Siegemaster or Tough Skin = Babysitting

In short, Alistar is one of the best roaming Supports in the game so Explorer is  the best choice imo. If you think you get pushed very hard in lane, Siegemaster is an option too. Tough Skin is worth taking, if you have the pressure on the lane but you won't roam much, with a Klaista for example.

Runic Armor vs. Veteran's Scars

Runic Armor = Earlygame, Veteran's Scars = Lategame

Like Recovery, Veteran's Scars is the safer option but Runic Armor scales better into lategame.

Insight vs. Perserverance vs. Fearless

Your Summoner Spells are much more usefull than some Life-regen. or Resistances, so you should allways take Insight.

Swiftness vs. Legendary Guardian

Imo, Tenacity is such a good stat on Tanks in general, and much more rarely to get then some Resistances, so Swiftness > Legendary Guardian.

Keystone

Courage of the Colossus or Stoneborn Pact

With the nerfs to CoC and the rework of Bond of Stone you really have a hard time to choose which keystoen to take.

If you are the only tank and main engage on your team, CoC might be the better option to give you more survivability. It's not that good in lane anymore, because of the high early CD

If there're other tank on the team I allmost allways go Stoneborn Pact now. It helps you to sustain in lane in addition to your passive and you can prog it on multiple people in teamfights.

Additional to that you allready will have a shield from the new supportitem-quest.

alistarpassive.png Triumphant Roar (Passive)

Innate: Alistar gains a stack of Triumph every time he Stun icon stuns or Airborne icon displaces at least one enemy champion, and every time a minion or small monster dies.

At 7 Triumph stacks, Alistar roars, healing himself for 20 - 139 (based on level) health and all nearby allied champions for20 - 139 (based on level) health 」.

Alistar roars instantly if a nearby enemy champion or epic monster dies. Once Triumph stacks are consumed Alistar cannot gain more again for a short duration.

The heal on Alistars passive is not much but it's enough to outsustain opponents with no sustain. It gets better in the latgame, mostly because of that insta-prog from enemy-champion deaths and the very good level-scaling.

pulverize.png Pulverize (Q)

Active: Alistar slams the ground beneath him, dealing magic damage to all nearby enemies and Airborne icon knocking them up for 1 second.

AOE-knockup, thats it, for further information, check the combo-section.

headbutt.png Headbutt

Active: Alistar dashes to the target enemy, dealing them magic damage, Stun icon stunning them for 1 second and Airborne icon knocking them back.

Tool for mobility and peel, for further information, check the combo-section.

alistare.png Trample

Active: Alistar tramples the ground around him every 0.5 seconds for 5 seconds, dealing magic damage to all nearby enemies and gaining a Trample stack every time the ability damages at least one enemy champion. Alistar is Ghost ghosted for the duration.

At 5 Trample stacks, Alistar's next basic attack deals 55 - 310 (based on level) bonus magic damage and Stun icon stuns his target for 1 second.

Alistars old Passive is now an AOE-DOT-spell with an enchanted AA that stuns after full stacked. You thought you had nothing to do after your combo? Well, now you have. Hit that whenever you're in the middle of fight. Keep in mind that, after full stacked, the empowered stun-AA does not last long, so be sure to stun at least something, befor the duration passes.

While towerdiving, this will also let you keep aggro.

ferocioushowl.png Unbreakable Will

Active: Alistar reduces all incoming physical and magic damage (50 / 60 / 70%) for the next 7 seconds, cleansing himself of all crowd control on cast.

THE Tank-Ultimate. Pretty simple, it makes you tankier let you do insane towerdives, soak up damage like nothing, get off your CC with no problem. Many people forget the free cleanse you get with this, so be sure to stay infront of your carries.

Core Items

3401.png Face of the Mountain

Not much to say about this. Get it after Sightsstone and Mobi-boots or after one other item.

2045.png Ruby Sightstone

I allmost allways get this after my first item with an active effect, whether it's Redemption or FOTM.

2303.png Eye of the Equinox

Since it gives also 10% CDR now it's now viable to pick if you either don't feel the need for the FOTM-shield and/or don't want to build many active-items which would make a Ruby Sightstone more usefull

3107.png Redemption

THE support-item and the new old-Locket-like instabuy for allmost every support. Well, Aistar has at least some scaling with this item, through his passive, but I would get at least one or two items with resistances befor buying this.

3110.png Frozen Heart

Still one of the best items for Alistar and great against teamcomps that rely on Attackspeed. Also early CDR and mana is kinda important for Alistar to get more combos and Ult's off. With FOTM, Frozen Heart and Redemption, you get exactly what you need for Alistar, plus 40% CDR.

3109.png Knights Vow

I love this iem for its great design, but I hate it for its horrible item path and long cooldown. Whether it's great when your Team is ahead, especially when you have some fed bruiser you can link with. Why Bruiser? Well the damage reduction and the heal from Knights Vow are halfed for ranged champions.

If you don't have such a Bruiser or Asssassin, or if your team is behind, Frozen Heart is maybe a better option.

3190.png Locket of the Iron Solari

Worse in case of stats, but a whe lot better active than the old Locket. This is still a must have if you want to turn 5v5 teamfights to your favour.

3512.png Zz'Rot Portal

One of the most cost efficent items to buy and great for turning an achived advantage into one or more towers.

3193.png Gargoyl Stoneplate

Damn is that thing just made for Alistar. If you dive into multiple opponents pop this together with your Ultimate to be as near as unkillable.

Combo's Back to Top

W - Q: headbutt.png - pulverize.png

Probebably the most iconic combo to do with Alistar. To do it you have to cast your instandly after you start to fly towards your target and you will knockup directly after you hit it. Timing is key, because otherwise you either just stand on the spot, knocking up nothing and look like an idiot or, even worse, you save an opponent by knocking him into savety.

W - Flash - Q:  - headbutt.png - 4.png - pulverize.png

Too far away? Buffer your W out of range, than flash into range and press Q as soon as you start to dash.

Q - W: pulverize.png - headbutt.png

The main part of this combo is the W. Yu want to use it to knock a single opponent into your teammates. Since the Q is just a tool to position yourself behind the target, it can be replaced by any CC that gives you enough time to do the same, like your E or another CC from your teammates.

Q - Flash - W: pulverize.png - 4.png - headbutt.png

Same as Q - W combo but with Flash to get over distance and catch your opponents with their pants down.

Why not Flash befor Q? Well, your Q has a slight cast-time. If you Flash befor Q, your opponents will have exactly this time to react and use their Flashes or capclosers to avoid the knockup. With Q- Flash, you cancel that animation, giving them no time to react
