Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png -> Must have this summoner spell for its versatile use of dodge, gap-close, engage or escape;

3.png -> Due to lethality buffs in Patch 7.14, despite the nerfs to Exhaust in previous patches, this summoner spell can be very potent in stopping, or at least delaying, an assassination. Highly recommended if your timing on Exhaust is consistently good. There is also a chance to misclick and Exhaust the wrong person in a skirmish/teamfight, so evaluate whether you'll put this spell to good use. Personally, I don't use Exhaust often because in order to use it, I'd have to be in range of most enemies and that's not playing to Azir's strength which is his high range;

21.png -> Absorbs some damage that helps in many situations. Useful against burst mages (examples include: 99.png/115.png/63.png...); not recommended against assassins, whether AD or AP, because most of the time you will position yourself in the backline anyways. Barrier will help you survive high range poke when you cannot dodge in time, especially because of Azir's low base movement speed;

1.png -> Fantastic against heavy crowd control match-up, or enemy team. Opt to Cleanse if your match-up has undodgeable stun (examples include: 4.png/127.png/13.png...); also very useful to remove other debuff summoner spells on you (3.png/14.png); keep in mind though, cleanse has no effect on suppression (90.pngmalzaharr.png/19.pngwarwickr.png/72.pngskarnerimpale.png);

7.png -> Additional survivability for Azir and potentially another teammate, but can be halved by the effect Grievous Wounds caused by 14.png/3123.png3033.png/3076.png3075.png/3165.png/55.pngkatarinar.png;

Ferocity Tree
6114.png -> You are a caster and will benefit from increased Ability damage. This will cause more damage than 6111.png because your azirw.png Soldiers' auto-attacks apply spell effects;
6122.png -> Lane sustain. Your spells and Soldiers does not proc 6142.png. In a solo lane, 6123.png is only ever useful when you're getting a gank from a teammate, which is not very often because midlaners are difficult to gank;

6134.png -> Extra AP is useful. The reason for the other points in 6131.png is for additional lane sustain. Your Soldiers proc spellvamp. However 0.8% spellvamp is not noticeable - but it's kinda a placebo effect. You just kinda feel healthier in lane with this;

6143.png -> Play to Azir's strength, which is extended fights.

Cunning Tree
6312.png -> Mages have low base auto-attack damage early game. Azir is no different. Helps you CS.

6322.png -> Again, lane sustain. Although 6321.png is very nice if you know how to efficiently use it (also useful in parts of the game whereas biscuits fall off in mid-late game);

6331.png -> More damage. The reason for the other points in 6332.png is to compensate for the nerf of Doran's Ring mana regen;

6343.png -> The best one of the three. 6341.png will not be put into good use as the brushes in mid lane cannot be used practically (although has some synergy with 427.png). Your Solder's auto-attacks will not proc 6342.png;

6351.png/6352.png -> Personal preference;

6362.png -> Allows lane dominance with long range harass. Can proc easily with azirw.pngAAazirqwrapper.pngAA.

Starting Items

    Standard starting items.

Core Items

    Early recall.
    Stinger for Attack Speed and CDR. Morellonomicon ensures that Azir can spam soldiers. Sell Stinger when you have capped 40/45% CDR. Nashor's tooth is not viable for Azir in current meta.
    Defensive Items. Try to rush one against assassins.
    Void Staff should compensate for your lack of Magic Penetration. Opt for Flat Magic Pen against low Magic Resist targets.
    Tons of AP!
    Example late-game build.

Situational Items

    Your 6th Item slot should be freed up for a control ward or an Elixir.
    Blue trinket - standard, or when behind; red trinket for superior vision control - most effective when ahead.
    Defensive for 6th item slot.
    Rylai's Crystal Scepter synergizes with Liandry's Torment. Pick up Void Staff if you haven't yet. Luden's Echo provides 10% Movement Speed, and AoE damage, really good stats for late game.

VS

Cassiopeia

Easy

Her DPS outclasses every mage - except you. Your Soldiersazirw.png can deal AoE damage whereas her Twin Fang(E)cassiopeiae.png does not. She will inherently have higher movement speed due to her Passivecassiopeiapassive.png, and commonly used summoner spell6.png. Try to juke her Qcassiopeiaq.png as it will grant her even more movement speed. She will turn into a nuisance once she gets her Rylai's Crystal Scepter3116.png, so don't get too close. Note: her Wcassiopeiaw.png will prevent you from using your Dash(E)azirewrapper.png and Flash4.png. You should never be in a position where she can stun you, so be wary of her ultimatecassiopeiar.png especially when she's not in vision.

VS

Ekko

Easy

You outrange him, and your self peel is amazing. The only drawback in this match-up is that you always have to play counter-engage, otherwise his ultimateekkor.png will let him recover from any of Azir's engages. His burst is incredibly high in mid-late game, avoid being assassinated by being near teammates, but not too close or he will dump his AoE damageekkoq.pngekkor.png and stunekkow.png to you and your team.

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

You outrange him quite a bit. His turrets are targetable but your soldiers are not. Never engage alone unless you're very ahead and have vision of his teammates. You have a dash to avoid his skillshots which are easily telegraphed, but may be a problem if you're slowed (Eheimerdingere.png/Rylai's Crystal Scepter3116.png).

VS

Katarina

Easy

She has relatively high mobility but very predictable. Place Soldiers(W)azirw.png near her daggers or yourself, and she'll think twice before using her Blink(E)katarinaewrapper.png. Avoid standing near minions because her Qkatarinaq.png bounces. Her Wkatarinaw.png gives her movement speed and she has a Blink, so she can easily escape the range of your soldiers so you have to be wise when using your spells especially because you can run out of mana, she can't. Your knockbackazirr.png can interrupt her ultimatekatarinar.png. Note: you can also stand inside your wall and she will be knocked back if she uses her Blink on you, but the duration of your wall is very very short. Her passive resetskatarinapassive.png are hard to deal with, but as Azir, your position should always be far from assassins.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

You outrange her, attempt to go for sustained trades where she can't reach with Wlissandraw.png. Try not to stand behind minions because her Qlissandraq.png range is extended if she hits it. Note: her Elissandrae.png lets her pass your wall azirr.png. Her ultimatelissandrar.png is point-and-click, in other words can't be dodged if casted on you. Cleanse1.png will free you from itlissandrar.png, as well as grant Tenacity for a few seconds which reduces the effectiveness of her Qlissandraq.png slow and Wlissandraw.png snare. Banshee's Veil3102.png ensures that she cannot use her ultimate before any other spells and will give you reaction time. Quicksilver Sash3140.png is not recommended, because it doesn't build into a mage item and does not grant Tenacity like Cleanse1.png does. But still get QSS if you absoluteley need it.

VS

Ryze

Easy

Try not to stand too close to Ryze because his Qryzeqwrapper.png relatively fast, and Azir has low base movement speed. Avoid standing near minions or targets with his Eryzee.png applied. This can be hard to keep track of, especially in an explosive teamfight. Fortunately, you have superior range and can dish out plenty of damage from afar. Watch out for his Flash>Snare 4.pngryzew.png as it cannot be dodged [=1.png3102.png3140.png]. Although his ultimateryzer.png is very good for team mobility, your ability to siege and zone control is more advantageous especially with your passiveazirpassive.png to reconstruct turrets. Note: he has plenty of waveclear with Eryzee.pngQryzeqwrapper.png, so he can go from one lane to another extremely fast particularly if he has 6.png/12.png or even with just his ultimateryzer.png.

VS

Teemo

Easy

He is difficult to engage on as Azir, due to Teemo's faster base movement speed + Wmovequick.png movement speed + Mushroom(R)teemorcast.png slows (+ Rylai's Crystal Scepter3116.png). Thankfully, his Blind(Q)blindingdart.png does not work against your Soldiersazirw.png, so he'll have to think twice before attacking you otherwise you can retaliate effectively. Buying sweeping lens3341.png/oracle alteration3364.png/control ward 2055.png to clear his mushrooms regularly.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Azir is a great lane bully, and cripples Yasuo in the entire game. Avoid close combat, you can't be in range of the following: Tornado (3rd Q yasuoqw.png), Flash>Tornado/Tornado>Flash 4.pngyasuoqw.png, Beyblade>Flash yasuodashwrapper.pngyasuoqw.png4.png. Note: At level 2, he will have kill pressure if you use Qazirqwrapper.png poorly (if you have Wazirw.png on cooldown) - at the very least he will outrade you. Eventually both of you will scale well in late game, but your range and AoE DPS will crush him.

VS

Zilean

Easy

He has no kill pressure on you. Do not use your Qazirqwrapper.png if his Speed-up(W)zileanw.png is not on cooldown, because he can speed himself up to dodge your Slow(Q)azirqwrapper.png. It's best to Dash(E)azirewrapper.png away from him if he's engaging, during a gank or teamfight. He can also use Wzileanw.png to slow you down, keeping in mind that Azir has low base movement speed, you're guaranteed dead if you have Eazirewrapper.png and Flash4.png on cooldown. Fortunately, his Qzileanq.pngEtimewarp.pngQzileanq.png combo is predictable and can be easily dodged. Because Zilean can build into 3070.png/3010.png, he can spam his abilites so you have manage your mana against him. Force him to use his ultimatechronoshift.png just before teamfighting for objectives, as it can be game-changing. Your Morellonomicon3165.png applies Grievous Wounds, which reduces the heal of his ultimate significantly.
