Summoner Spells Back to Top

The go to summoners for ADCs are 4.png (flash) and 7.png (heal).


 7.png is very helpful for the botlane as it gives 2 players instant health and 30% movement speed. Perfect for baiting dives, saving allies and chasing/kiting with the movement speed.

4.png is the strongest summoner allowing for a multitude of possibilities such as repositioning, dodging crucial spells, escaping over walls, securing kills and much more.

21.png is not recommended as it leaves out the option of a stronger 2v2 duel spell, for a temporary shield although stronger against single target damage. Barrier is usually taken on late game hyper carries such as Kog'maw 96.png  but Caitlyn is no longer a viable late game carry after her latest attack per level nerfs.

Masteries Back to Top

This is the main page for Cait, going 18/0/12. It gives you more survivability and laning power compared to the 

previous 18/12/0. After the continued nerfs to Caitlyn, the only part untouched is her strong laning phase so this 
mastery page looks to accent her strengths. 


6111.png - 5 points in Fury gives 4% attack speed, compared to the 2% increased ability damage of 6114.png. Caitlyn is more auto attack focused than ability, so take Fury.

6121.png - Fresh Blood gives your next auto attack 10+1 per level damage on a 6s cd, compared to 6122.png which gives 20 hp on a 30s cd. Good Caitlyn players will always be auto attacking something whether it being minions to shove, or harass enemies with her long range, Caitlyn is one of the most easiest champs to proc Fresh Blood on. 6123.png is mainly for support or low damage utility champions, both of which Caitlyn is not.

6131.png - Vampirism gives 2% life steal and spell vamp which is more consistent than the flat AD and AP 6134.png gives. Vampirism is more reliable in having more hp throughout all stages in the game but there is also a Korean variation which puts 4 points into Natural Talent and 1 point into Vampirism. 

6143.png - Battle Trance is the most safest and reliable mastery compared to 6141.png and 6142.png. Bounty hunter is a wildly ranging mastery where if you are ahead, you can deal out up to 5% increased damage for free which is great but if you are behind you receive nothing, and that is when you really need the increased damage. Double Edged Sword is decent on Caitlyn if you have a lane which you know you will smash but as an ADC you want to be taking as little as damage possible. Battle Trance instead leaves you with 2seconds of 1-2% increased damage but once you reach the 3rd second of combat, it reaches the damage of double edged sword but with no downsides.

6161.png - The two keystones that are viable for Cait are Warlords and 6162.png. Fervor scales with champions that can auto attack a lot and with ADCs those are mainly the 3153.png users. As Cait runs a Crit build, fervor stacks very slowly when you have 1 item/2 compared to adcs that have lots of attack speed from bork and along with the attack speed nerfs on her Warlords is clearly the better choice. The sustain allows you to stay in lane longer and the movement speed given by it is very underrated in lane. You can auto the enemy adc and use the bonus movement speed to run before they can trade back. Warlords also synergizes very well with 3087.png and 3094.png giving you lots of long range, healing burst crits.

6211.png - Recovery is like a mini doran's shield, giving you solid passive health regeneration. 6212.png is not viable as you won't be building enough armor and magic resist to make it worth it.

6223.png - Tough Skin gives you flat damage resistance against auto attacks which can save your life easily as in all ins it can save you approximately 20 hp. 6222.png is useless as a Caitlyn should always be trying to push or freeze near the middle, it is very rare where siegemaster is useful. A Korean special is that they take6221.png on ADC's to have faster collapses and rotations to catch the enemy off guard.

6232.png - gives you 50 flat hp at level 1 which is HUGE. You start with 524 hp with out doran's blade and with Veteran's Scars you increase your hp by 10% already without buying any items. 6231.png is insignificant early game as your life steal is small but it scales up quite nicely, but the point of going 12 points in resolve is to boost your early game laning power so it's against the point if you take Runic Armor.

6243.png- Fearless is arguably the reason ADC's switched from 18/12/0 to 18/0/12. The 2 second increase of defenses on such a low cooldoown (9s) is extremely valuable. The summoner spell cd decrease from6241.png is not enough to justify it over Fearless. 6252.png is just whack.

Caitlyn's next basic attack against enemies Root icon rooted by Yordle Snap Trap.png  or Slow icon slowed by 90 Caliber Net.png has 1300 range and deals  bonus physical damage, modified to 150% AD versus non-champions.

Additionally, Caitlyn gains 15% bonus attack speed and her regular basic attacks each generate a stack of Headshot, doubled when attacking from brush, granting her next basic attack the same bonus physical damage at 6 stacks, though this does not benefit from bonus range nor is it consumed on other instances of Headshot.

ACTIVE: After 1 second, Caitlyn fires a projectile in the target direction that deals physical damage to the first enemy it passes through, after which it expands in width but deals only 50% damage to all enemies it passes through thereafter.

PASSIVE: Caitlyn periodically stores a charge of Yordle Snap Trap, up to a maximum amount stored at once.


ACTIVE: Caitlyn sets a trap at the target location that arms after 1.1 seconds and lasts up to 90. After the maximum amount of traps is laid down, deploying another immediately destroys the oldest one.

Enemy champions who step on a trap set it off, Root icon rooting them for 2 seconds, during which they take increased damage from Headshot, grant True Sight icon true sight of themselves for 9 seconds, and become immune to Yordle Snap Traps for 4 seconds while they remain in the area.

ACTIVE: Caitlyn fires a net and recoils 400 units in the opposite direction, dealing magic damage to the first enemy hit and Slow icon slowing them by 50% for 1 second.

ACTIVE: After a brief delay, Caitlyn locks onto a target enemy champion and channels for 1 second. At start of the cast, Caitlyn gains True Sight icon true sight of the target.

If Caitlyn completes the channel, she fires a homing projectile toward the target that deals physical damage to the first enemy champion it hits. Other enemy champions can intercept the shot.

80% of the time you will be taking dorans blade as it provides strong early game stats as long with being extremely gold efficient.

The other 20% of the time, you will be taking Dshield against very, very strong lanes such as Draven 119.png and Brand 63.png. It is very likely you will chunked in trades against kill lanes so the passive regeneration will be very useful to stay healthy when you are zoned from the minion. Please note this is the biggest difference between these dshield and dblade: if you think you can consistently auto minions and champions without getting too low then dblade is the right choice, if not go dshield.

Early Game

Normally your prioritization is 1038.png>3006.png>1037.png>1018.png when trying to build up to your first item of 3031.png. A very big mistake that most players don't know is NEVER BUY INDIVIDUAL POTS after your first dblade/shield buy. Always try to get a 2031.png as it will be infinitely more efficient. Also on your first back get a 1083.png if you have the extra gold instead of boots but if it is any other back then just skip it for 1001.png or 1042.png. Do not be afraid to sell your 1083.png even if you haven't finished it to buy a more expensive item, it is more efficient to have a round power curve instead of staying weak for a couple more minutes.

Mid Game

At this time you should have your 3031.png3087.png3006.png around 20-21 minutes if you are doing reasonably well. If you are facing a very heavy ad comp or ap comp you can swap berserkers greaves out for either 3047.pngor 3111.png, note that after the attack speed nerfs you will be attacking very slow without berserkers so don't go defensive boots unless needed to. At this point in the game, you will have to recognize what the enemy team has and what are their threats. If they have 2 tanks or 1 very strong one beginning to or already stacking armor then a 3035.png would be a good pick up. If they have a lot of hard crowd control then 3140.png is viable. If they have healing champs such as 16.png then buy a 3123.png. If your threat of dying is to divers/assassins then a 3046.png would be a good zeal pickup. If NONE of these scenarios apply, only then is it good to build into 3094.png. Do not ever only go 1 stagnant build every single game, good players build against the enemy and are able to adapt to different situations although it will take some time to recognize these scenarios.

Late Game

Making your decision for your last item is again dependent on the enemy team. You should usually have something like this by the end of the game 3031.png3087.png3094.png3006.png3036.png. Usually the best buy would be a 3026.png but if you always survive the teamfights but need more damage and you are against heavy burst then 3812.png is a solid pick. If you already have3140.png then obviously upgrade into a 3139.png. If you are in no threat of dying then the last pick is 3072.png giving you the most lifesteal and a solid overheal shield.

Draven

Hard

Draven is probably the hardest matchup for Caitlyn herself as she cannot match the massive damage Draven puts out. In this matchup it is CRUCIAL that you land yourcaitlynentrapment.png when Draven is running at you, or you are most likely dead. You may want to get a 1054.png if his support is ranged. One little trick is to use your caitlynyordletrap.png where hisdravenspinning.png marks where his next axe lands. Usually this will net you a free trap auto and help out the trades. Just keep in mind to not take long trades against Draven and slowly poke him out and push him out.

VS

Ezreal

Easy

Ezreal is extremely weak right now due to his poor itemization mainly his first back 3070.png so his stats are very low combined with a weak champion. Ezreal also has very low waveclear, so pushing him into turret and backing for items is a good strategy. Freezing doesn't work very well against Ez as his long range ezrealmysticshot.png can net him last hits. 

VS

Jhin

Medium

Jhin used to be a easy matchup but now with the nerfs, Cait's strengths have been toned down allowing Jhin to have a better chance. You want to play around his bullets and the potential of his burst. Jhin only has 4 autos so he has to choose between minions and trading so play around that. Take into account how many autos he has left, at 4 auto he is the weakest as his strongest trading tool is his 4th shot. 

VS

Jinx

Easy

Jinx has comparable range to Caitlyn when she is in her jinxq.png rocket mode, but it depletes mana and has very low attack speed. Taking this into account, you want to push Jinx under turret so she cannot trade back with her rockets as she will lose heavy cs and possibly mess them up if she autos with her rockets. Try to not to take extended fights against Jinx as she excels there.

Kalista

Medium

Kalista can vary from a very easy to a extremely difficult matchup varying of the skill of the player. If played right, Caitlyn will almost never be able to land a caitlynentrapment.png or caitlynpiltoverpeacemaker.png onto Kalista, so wait for your support to use their cc to follow up with your abilities. Try to deter from long trades as her kalistaexpungewrapper.png will do massive damage if not taken into account of.

VS

Kog'Maw

Easy

Kog'maw is one of the weakest early game ADC's in the game and you should be looking to abuse that. Although he is weak, if you see him use his kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png do not trade with him. Without him autoing you with his W, he loses every single trade. Look to push Kog'maw under turret and slowly poke him down. You should be able to gain a significant cs lead through your pressure, but if you dont, he will scale in to a hyper carry in the later stages of the game.

VS

Lucian

Easy

Lucian is another short range ADC but with a longer dash compared to 67.png. You can play the lane the same way as if you were against Vayne but if you misposition and get cc'd by the enemy support, Lucian can punish you very hard. Have constant harass but be aware of your positioning as well and this should be an easy lane.

VS

Miss Fortune

Hard

Miss Fortune does very well into Caitlyn due to both of their preferences of short trades but MF does it better, bursting harder due to her passive and missfortunericochetshot.png. Positioning against MF is different as if you stand behind minions you will be punished, so stand next to minions instead of behind. Just try to survive this lane and not get crit Q'd by MF and hope your jungler comes down or she misplays.

VS

Sivir

Easy

Sivir is a very low range ADC and you should look to abuse that but there are different playstyles for sivir. Sivir's have very strong waveclear so you should not try to shove her in but freeze the lane. If you don't know what freezing is, it is basically hitting the enemy minions at the last second possible to get the last hit, you do not want to auto any minions that are full health. Another possibility for Sivir is that she takes harass from you but she pushes the wave, in this instance, you want to save your Q to counter push and slowly poke her down. In lane, you shouldn't place your caitlynyordletrap.png randomly as Sivir's sivire.png will grant her free mana and disable your trap.

Tristana

Medium

Tristana is considered a medium matchup not because she can pressure you out but in the sense that she is very safe with her tristanaw.png and tristanar.png. Against her you will definetly want to shove her into turret as the passive from her tristanae.png makes it difficult for her to last hit under turret. Whenever she uses her tristanae.png on you, net away and wait for it to explode before trading again.

Twitch

Easy

Against Twitch, it is a possibility to take 1054.png as hit passive refreshes the hp regen on your doran's shield. You want to shove Twitch in under turret early, harass him and not take long trades against him as his twitchexpunge.png will demolish you. If the enemy support starts running at you for no reason, there is a high chance that Twitch is there as well but invisible due to his twitchhideinshadows.png so watch out for that.

Varus

Medium

Varus is one of the other long range ADC's simlar to you but with a long range CC in his varusr.png. He goes quite even with Caitlyn as he can trade similarly so this lane lies in the hands of the supports.

Vayne

Easy

The classic counter pick, Caitlyn smashes Vayne in lane due to Vayne's low range and no reliable way to get onto Cait. It is very important to use your caitlynentrapment.png after Vayne vaynetumble.png to have a much higher chance to hit the net. If she dodges the net, usually she wins the trade. You can either shove in Vayne to harass her under turret or freeze it. When harassing her remember to go into the bush after you auto to reset minion aggro.

Xayah

Easy

Xayah is another low range ADC that has a lot of burst from her xayahe.png. Position accordingly around her feathers and this lane should be quite easy. Her ultimate xayahr.png grants her untargetability so keep this in mind to not get baited.

  •  Use the headshot auto in lane mainly to poke as it will add a decent amount of oomph
  • Does massive damage to creeps, allowing you to push harder
  • Headshot stacks twice as fast in bush, allowing it to be 3 autos instead of the normal 6 aas to proc

  • Put 3 points into this ability for early poke and wave shoving
  • Does 50% less damage to all targets after the first, so try to hit the enemy first if you are poking
  • Try to hit both the wave and the enemy laners when pushing the wave to maximize efficiency
  • Enemies that recently have stepped on your trap take 100% Q damage even if the Q hits enemies 
  • Try not to Q in late game team fights, as the ability will reduce your dps by a lot compared to just auto attacking

  • After 3 points into Q, max this ability after
  • After your trap arms itself, any enemy that steps on your trap takes extra damage from your next auto attack, gets rooted for 1.5 seconds and your auto against them gains 800 range
  • After your support lands CC onto the enemy, you always want to go for a trap first, then auto
  • Always keep 1 trap up for cc chains with you jungler/support as it will always almost net a kill or force summoners
  • When enemies are in a zhonya3157.pngstasis or reviving from a 3026.png , you can place a trap underneath them for a guaranteed trap
  • There are 2 ways of placing your traps in lane
  • You can place your traps sporadically all over in the lane in random positions. This works well in lower elos as enemies sometimes step on traps that were there for a long time. 
  • If you have enough pressure in lane, you can create a trap line or wall to create a imaginary line where the enemy cannot cross. If there are gaps around the traps, it is very easy to predict where they are going so skill shots are easier to land
  • Another tactic is to only trap off half of a lane if you have AOE champions like Orianna61.png. This will make it so the enemy team groups up in a very small part of the lane allowing the AOE champions to easily get their wombo combos off

  • When you use this ability, a net which slows and guarantees a headshot, comes flying toward where you aimed at and you dash the opposite way you shot your net
  • A very strong reposition/dodging spell to create room  by slowing and hitting them with a guaranteed headshot
  • If against champions with dashes and gap closers, it is recommended to hold your net until they use it to have a higher chance to land it
  • Your net is very strong against crucial skill shots such as Ashe's Enchanted Crystal Arrowenchantedcrystalarrow.png. Instead of netting straight backwards, netting to a side launches you sideways as well, allowing you a very high chance to dodge the ability
  • If you are chasing an enemy and need that little bit of range to finish them off, you can e the opposite way they are to dash in that direction

  • Your ult is a single target, long range nuke that takes time to aim and fire
  • Your ult can be easily blocked by enemy tanks so be wary when you use it
  • Very strong finisher when the enemy escapes with very little health
  • In the late game, you want to use this ability before a team fight to poke out an enemy carry, so if you see one isolated do not hesitate to fire!
  • This ability is mainly used as a starting ability, or finishing ability so try not to use it in a middle of a fight as that will diminish your dps severely

For when an enemy is running at you, you do a decent chunk and slow them at the same time. Can do 40-50% of a squishy targets health.

This is a more complex version of the combo before and it will take some practice to get down. I recommend practicing this in the practice tool. This will almost 1shot enemy ADC's.

In the end, after the gutting of Caitlyn from Rito, she still remains a strong solo queue pick if you can fully leverage her advantages. Although her mid game and late game is significantly weaker now, if you snowball through the laning phase and get bot turret your transition to the later part of the games should be much smoother.
