Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.pngFlash! Enough said.  Helps you get away, chase, or get to someone to silence with your w or secure a kill.
12.pngIf your losing lane or run out of sustain, you can teleport back with full mana and health is useful late game and can gank bottom lane with good wards.

14.pngSecures a kill, I prefer tele, its also a lot safer, but not a bad choice.

Masteries Back to Top

By far the best for tanky Chogath.  If your building AP then go 12-18-0.  And take Thunder-lords because it is broken right now.  (December-14-2015)

Normally against AP I max w first for a longer silence duration and AD I go rupture for damage and wave clear.  Start Q for level 1 invades.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    For Pantheon.
Early items to grab when you base.
Standard start. Most games take this.

Core Items

Fairly standard Frozen heart is very cost efficient, plus the fact that we get free stats from our ult health wise it compliments the armor nicely. This is for mostly ad teams
Great item actives. The Righteous makes you so fast and it works great with Stone-plate active. You can just run into their team with 8-12khp so they use everything on you.
Need more damage top lane grab these instead of Frozen heart.

Situational Items

Can swich the mallet and thornamil for these if need be
AP MID CHO run 18-12-0 or 12-18-0

I build defensive on Chogath even if ahead since his base stats are all so high.  However, if your team really lacks damage I put in some new AP items into the build because they are all so strong right now in the game.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

Lane wise I would put it to a medium but rarely should you lose a game to this guy.  This is a sustain game, your job is to not die to him, (or ganks) while getting as much farm as you can.  Killing him isn't really worth the effort, not only will it most likely waste your ult, but his passive will just bring him back anyway.  Just get your stacks up to 6 and if a fight is about to break out, make sure you teliport down bot lane before he does. Your job is to be more useful to your team then the other top lane.

VS

Darius

Hard

If your good with positioning in lane this is fairly easy. If you're not, then play very passive.

1. Dont fight for too long just out farm and out roam him.
2. If he gets really good trades on you early, do not be afraid to back to base and tp back with hp pots; he will run out of mana.  Your sustain is better than his.  Always be ready to Dodge his Q.
3. Keep your stacks at 6. You gain a huge HP bonus and it will help counter his bleed.  When he builds Black cleaver do not all in him.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium
Farm fest, stay behind minions to dodge cleavers. You both scale well, but you are much more helpful.

VS

Fiora

Medium

New Fiora is harder than old.  My advice is to silence her before hitting Rupture, that way she cant use her w to block it.  Don't do long trades with her and do not push the lane against her.  Other than that she's free kills if you have a decent jungler.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

I recommend picking one of GP's hard counters such as 114_64.png80_64.pngor92_64.png122.png into this lane, but if he picked into you then its fairly easy just farm get stacks. Just be a BEEFY CC GOD.  Not much kill potential is there for either of you without your jungler's help.

Played the match-up and new GP! While harder for most, is easier for you.   His old E actually helped him win alot of trades before the buff.   His pokes don't do much when you get armor.  All in him if he ults another lane if he ults you walk out of it the damage it hurts alot.

VS

Garen

Easy

Out farm him.

If he builds an IE, build THORNMAIL3075_64.png and spam laugh.

VS

Gnar

Hard
It can only be good if your jungler ganks after you hit a rupture.
  • Ban him if your going to first pick Chogath.
  • Best advice when against him is to lane swap with your mid since Chogath does fine in the mid lane.

VS

Irelia

Medium
Farm lane.
Her true damage is not so great when you're getting 300hp from every feast. Totally counters her.  Ping MIA when she roams and out roam her. She will usually have 12.png but so do you! Use this, but don't forget to wave clear to make plays in other lanes.

Beware of her level 6 don't push up to far or she does have kill potential.  Another

thing to note is that Irelia is an item dependent champion, if she builds BOTRK (Blade

of the Ruined King)  or gets a few early kills she can be more annoying to deal with so

play passive if that is the case.

Watch her items as they change her play-style.

VS

Jayce

Easy

You can kill him from lvl 6-18, just don't go too ham.

  • Jayce works very well with a jungler's help, so keep wards in the river (and tri bush if you're on red spawn AND BITE THE SCUTTLE CRAB!)

VS

Katarina

Easy

I just have to put this. I know its a mid match-up, but he wrecks Katarina so hard in every way. HIGHLY consider mid Chogath vs her.

  • Your silence AND rupture stops her from ulting.
  • Once you have 6 stacks, just bite her every time she comes back into lane and watch as half of her health is gone. She won't even want to roam.
  • You out-sustain her laughable poke from her Qs.
However take all players seriously as they got into whatever elo your in as well.
  • PING MIA if she leaves your sight.
  • Make sure to be at every team fight that she is in. You have12.png, she most likely does not!

VS

Kennen

Medium

Annoying poke for the first 6 levels, just do the best you can to farm.  Another reason12.png is highly recomended is if he pokes you out, come right back with HP pots.

Refrain from dying and giving up easy kills.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

People pick this into me all the time and I win probably 70% of the games.

Your silence stops her E (her only escape), so does rupture.
She is killable with or without jungle help.

VS

Malphite

Easy
Farm lane.
You have much more wave clear and he will have to use mana to farm under turret so;
  • Push him in
  • Roam and gank mid lane
The only time to kill him is early and with the help of your jungler.
Your main goal is to be more useful than him in team fights. He has his ult and once that is gone, hes pretty much useless.

VS

Nasus

Medium

Very hard to stop him from farming but do the best you can! Don't be afraid to ask the jungle to help. Offer him some free kills, because that's what he is early, free kills.

If your team doesn't take advantage of that, you just let a hyper carry have a free win.
If you do manage to get a kill on him, start to build some AP. 3157_32.png3089_32.png Not joking.

VS

Pantheon

Easy

You have kill potential!

  • You can stop his ultimate
  • He falls off, you don't
  • If you have 3075_32.png he literally kills himself
If you don't easily win lane, then come back with lots of pots, you will out-sustain his poke and he will run himself oom.

Make sure to ping MIA and 12.png down to wherever he is.

VS

Renekton

Medium
Farm lane. Renekton is known for his 2v1s and if you or your jungle messes up, its going to be hard.
  • Survive the early game, he is a huge bully!
  • You scale better than he does.
  • You provide more cc and can be more helpful in a team fight than him.

VS

Rengar

Easy

This guy is nerfed to the ground.  What used to be a roaring lion is now hello kitty.  Very easy lane.  Play safe till level 4 then go for a kill, do a combo, wait for abilities do once more and then all in him.  Try not to trade when he has full stacks.

VS

Riven

Medium

You would think this is a good match-up because of your silence and her being an ad caster.  Nope.  Farm the best you can, feast up, and build armor early on.

  • When hitting your combo, silence first then try and rupture her. That way she cant just dodge it with her abilities.
  • Never try to all in her! Especially after she has her ulti.

VS

Ryze

Medium

I have changed this match-up multiple times duo to buffs and nerfs.  As of 12-28-15 he is a walk in the park as long as you don't over commit in a fight, Ryze loses most short trades.  Note that he also runs oom (out of mana) very quickly in the early game.

VS

Shen

Easy

New Shen is weak.  You also have 2 ways of stopping his ultimate.  When he is gone take advantage of Chogath's wave clear.  Don't fight him unless jungler is coming, you both sustain to hard.  Let him make the first move and punish him for it.  (Minion aggro.)

VS

Singed

Hard

Rare, but quite difficult.

Do the best you can.

If you have a ganking jungler, keep killing him. If not its going to be a rough game.
The whole point of Cho is to be useful to your team. Singed is able to keep you in your lane and be able to roam, himself.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Tryndamere has 4 weaknesses.
  1. Attack speed reduction 3110_32.png
  2. Team fights unless he gets ahead
  3. Burst damage
  4. Keeping up with his split pushing12.png
PLAY SAFE UNTIL AROUND LVL 4, HE MAY TRY TO CHEESE YOU BEFORE THEN.

Playstyle: VERY IMPORTANT. Back to Top

1. Play safe:

Always depends on the game and who the other champions are, but for the most part practice not dying and good positioning.  With Chogath, one who does not have any reliable escapes, you have to be very careful, as dying can set you back by not only denying exp/gold but also your stacks.  It may take a few games before you get the hang of it, but it will get you so far.

2. Ganking mid/warding:
Around level 6, what I like to do is go and 1 bite the scuttle crab.  Simple.  It provides a free ward, an extra stack and 50 gold, along with the move speed to bring you back into lane quickly....or gank mid lane.  This not only helps your team but it helps you survive.  Another thing it does is it enables you to gank mid quickly.  Sometimes I go mid, miss rupture, but hit my silence and my mid lane follows up and we get a kill. Other times I'll miss everything then walk back into lane, no shame. You miss all the shots you don't take.  Make sure when doing this that your lane is pushed to its tower, you don't want to miss to much farm. What that does is it forces the other top laner to follow you, or lose a bunch of creeps.  If they did follow you could see them with your wards/crab.  Go back to lane Rengar >.<

3. When to ult:
Experience is all it takes.  The best thing to do is get 6 stacks asap.  You don't have to hold your ult for the kill, however sometimes you just need some more damage on someone, if they are in feast range just bite him, its true damage!  Heck with 6 stacks you may as well walk up to mid lane bite him and leave because they usually don't have sustain.

4. Team fights:
This...is where you shine!  By this point you will have a fair amount of your build and are super tanky, along with doing a lot more damage than it seems.  You'r providing the best forms of cc.  (Knock-ups cannot be stopped by quicksilver sash or cleanse) and a 2.5 second silence is no laughing matter. Especially if you hit 2 or 3 champs.  As the tank, you can lead the fight and with your move speed quints, pick off people or initiate the fight with a good rupture. If you miss try again.  Know that if they have a lot of squishy champs it will be better to fight in the jungle, so just ward around.  If they are mostly tanky, take the fight to mid lane.  (More room for squishes to move around mid lane, that's why they're the bomb at Aram).  If you're under tower and your team is losing clear waves with your AOE (Area of Effect) abilities and prevent dives with them as well.

5. Attitude:
I'm sure you have heard this a lot...even from Riot.  DON'T BLAME OTHERS.  It is a very competitive game and often times you will get frustrated, just remember each of those other players all have the same goal: TO WIN.  When people blame me, I personally feel bad and honestly don't play as well as I could.  Be the better man and let it go.  League inst known for its friendly players :P you're going to get someone that is going to try and bring you down.

When to pick Chogath Back to Top

Mids that Cho is good against team fight or laning:238_64.png45_64.png80_64.png7_64.png55_64.png202.png

Bottom laners that he is a good pick into:1_64.png119_64.png29_64.png222_64.png96_64.png37_64.png

Who counters Chogath for the majority of the game:150_64.png67_64.png15_64.png25_64.png74_64.png27_64.png53_64.png268_64.png11.png

The Champions here are all hard counters one way or another I left out the rest because it isn't as significant as these champs.

Quick Tips to Gain ELO and How it Works Back to Top

1. Dont dodge games:

When you think your team is terrible and there is no hope for you, dont leave.  It counts as a loss.  "So what Curtis my points are still there."  No.  When you end a game it will show you how many games you have won and how many you have lost.  If you win more games than you have lost you gain 20 points and lose around 10 each time you lose.  If you have more Losses than its the other way around.  The system is trying to put you into a division where your win loss ratio is the same.

2. Ask for champions you would prefer to ban that counter who your planning on playing.

3. INVADE! As little as it may seem, everything counts if you can convince your team for an invade. Typically they are successful and can be game changing, rarely do they go in the enemies favor.

About Me (League) Back to Top

I started playing League a year and a half ago.  Mained Ashe until I came to my senses XD jk...but really.  I've played video games all my life so I knew that practice would make me better.  Hadn't done ranked because I felt as if I wasn't ready; once I was, I played Nasus and Pantheon. Most of the time I would carry the game, as I got better I tried ranked. My adrenaline went off that day, it was a scary thing.  After placements I got Gold and was so happy.  Didn't do ranked for a long time because I had fun with friends playing normal games.

One day my friends and I were playing ranked teams...The Dukes of Dunkenshire. I was up against a Diamond 2 Riven back when I was gold and my friends said this is the true test of how good you are.  I was determined to win, I was playing Nasus that day.  "The cycle of life and death continues...we will live...they will die." I said in all chat.  Next minute I was getting my butt handed to me...but we won,  4 man split pushed top lane and had a base race.  Good day.
Anyways I just started playing ranked again back in November and got into Plat, now with the new season I'm Diamond!

Short version:
Gold after first placements. (late 2013) Didn't play ranked very much.
Started playing more, got to Diamond. (late 2014-2015)

About Me Back to Top

I'm a 22 year old from California.  I work at my local gym as the head lifeguard.  On my free time I lift weights with my friends, play the occasional league game and watch politics.   I am very competitive and enjoy helping others play the game.  This is my first guide and I told myself not to make one until I have decent rank to back it up, Only reason why I hadn't made one yet.  Feedback is encouraged!

Thoughts on the Lolking website:

If this website was better managed I would probably make more guides.  In that, there isn't really anything in it for me aside from helping others play the game.  Unfortunately, even with the amount of views I have they won't put ads up on the side to make any profit.  They also wont respond to my emails.
