Summoner Spells Back to Top

12.pngTeleport is a standard spell to bring top lane, especially for a champion such as Cho'gath who holds no mobility to get to lane quicker, such as a Riven or Renekton. Also, farm is essential for Cho'gath, which is what normally puts him ahead, so this spell eliminates the chance of losing a huge minion wave to a turret on your way back to lane.

4.pngFlash is a spell used to chase enemies and escape awkward situations. (Obviously) You can use Flash to combo into abilities.

Ex) Flash + R (If Feast [ult] can kill)

I'm still on the fence on if you should go 12/0/18 or 0/12/18 with this build. I would recommend 12/0/18, however the difference is miniscule.

Focus on your E at all times. With this build, and almost every other Cho'Gath build, maxing your E unlocks him to his true potential both early and mid game.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Basic starting items. This should never vary.

Core Items

These should be your first three items. (Guinsoo's Rageblade is substitutable in situational builds)
    Basic boots. Shouldn't vary.

Situational Items

    For a bruiser type build.
Your E does magic damage, so this item might be something to toy with, as Abyssal Mask grants 10% more magic damage on your autos and abilities.

You need to maximize your damage, so items like Rageblade and Titanic Hydra are most effective. Again, this build maximizes damage, so Black Cleaver and Abyssal Mask aren't completely effective or just highly situational. Abyssal Mask, while maximizing damage output, should only be bought in the case of a major AP team.

Titanic Hydra, however, is the most essential item to this build. The spikes plus the AoE cone damage from the item will shred enemies. Plus, Titanic Hydra can be used to auto reset.

Auto resets allow you to cancel the auto attack animation, while providing the damage it normally outputs. This way, you can auto twice in one second, rather than twice in two seconds.

VS

Darius

Hard

No matter what build you choose Darius will ALWAYS beat you if you try to 1v1. DO NOT FIGHT HIM DURING LANING PHASE (unless your jungler is ganking).

VS

Kayn

Easy

There's not much to say really about this matchup, throughout all of laning phase, Kayn should never get a solid chance to kill you. You win all trades if you max your E and your W is an easy predict if you believe he might use his E to escape.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Just don't try to trade with him early in laning phase. I speak from experience when I claim, that you will not beat him that easily. Play safe, but remain assertive by poking with your E. Save your Q and your W for when he tries to engage.

VS

Renekton

Easy

If you're lucky Renekton will try for a level 1 or level 2 trade. As long as you're even in levels, and he doesn't have a lot of rage built up, this matchup should be no sweat. Not to mention, you scale much better than him through mid and late game. If he plays to passive after you assert yourself as dominant, roam mid lane for free kills and stacks. Note: Don't ult Renekton if you think he might use his soon.

VS

Riven

Easy

Not much to say here. You naturally counter Riven because all of her means of escape are very predictable. Her E and her Q only bringer her short distances so you don't need to lead your Q too far ahead.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

The only thing Yasuo can block with his windwall is your spikes. Simply walk through it the attack him. Keep in mind a lot of Yasuos attempt to block your W with their windwall.

Why does AD Cho'Gath work? Back to Top

AD Cho'Gath is so successful because of his E, mainly. Your E outputs so much damage, that it can cover for your Q and your W, which will be used strictly for utility. Also, a lot of AD items scale well with Cho'Gath.

Fun fact, Cho'Gath's base AD scales up to be the highest AD at level 18, at a total of 132.6, only behind Garen and Skarner, two of the best AD champions in the game. That being said, ABUSE THIS!

Also, Cho'Gath has the 3rd best AD growth per level, behind Garen and Skarner again.

Author's Notes Back to Top

Some of this is incomplete, such as the Matchups and Reference videos, because at the time of this guide's creation, the patch was released only two days ago. So I've had a lack of experience in terms of specific matchups and no videos have been yet uploaded of the new Ad Cho'gath.

Patch Notes and Thoughts Back to Top

7.14

Q: DAMAGE 80/135/190/245/305 80/135/190/245/300
COST 90 mana 60 mana

W: SILENCE DURATION 1.5/1.625/1.75/1.875/2 seconds 1.6/1.7/1.8/1.9/2 seconds

E: new COOLDOWN 8/7/6/5/4 seconds
new COST 30 mana
BASE DAMAGE 20/35/50/65/80 (+0.3 ability power) (unchanged)
new MAX HEALTH DAMAGE 4% target’s maximum health (+0.5% per Feast stack)
new DECAYING SLOW 30/35/40/45/50%, decaying over 1.5 seconds
new SET AND SPIKE Now grants 50 extra basic attack range
new SPEEDY SPIKES Now resets Cho’Gath’s basic attack timer
BUGFIX Now correctly applies Hunter’s Talisman’s health drain

So I believe that this rework makes AD Cho'Gath a much more viable pick, rather than a situational gimmick. While early lane pressure does lack in some matchups due to these changes, you will still win most 1v1 trades and fights, assuming you start E. Now that feast stacks also apply .5% extra health damage per stack, Cho'Gath in general is a better late game champion.

7.15 Cho'gath Nerf
 E:
DAMAGE 20/35/50/65/80 20/30/40/50/60
RATIO 4% target’s maximum health 3% target’s maximum health

While disappointed that the new E got nerfed, I'm not surprised nor denying the fact it was well deserved. In patch 7.14, Cho'Gath was freelo. Despite the nerf, I still believe Cho'Gath is still strong.
