Summoner Spells Back to Top

Ignite = Teleport > Exhaust

With the nerfs to Teleport, it is no longer mandatory. The cooldown is very long and you'll only get to use it maybe 2-4 times in lane. Ignite is now a viable candidate, especially with the wolf camp level 1 trick being removed. Ignite gives lane presence (you will usually win your lane with ignite, especially against someone who took teleport) but Teleport can give you drag control and kills bottom lane. It's down to preference, and I prefer ignite.

Also the bleed + ignite combo is insane damage (and with grievous wounds on ignite they can't just use a potion to survive your bleed).

EDIT: Really liking Teleport again. I take it every game. Ignite is lane dominance, while Teleport is map dominance. Simply put giving your team dragon control is way more useful than having a lane advantage. I still think Ignite is viable, I just overrated it by a lot. Choose whichever you prefer.

EDIT 2 (July 4th 2016) - Have been taking Ignite a lot recently. The nerfs to Teleport make it very predictable (and now the enemy will know where you will finish teleporting, so it's easier for them to run away / kill you). With ignite you can kill the enemy top laner, make him waste his tp to not miss the first few waves (or else he'd fall very far behind) and then still have ignite up before his teleport. Bleed + Ignite has always been crazy damage as well.

New Runes Back to Top

This is the page I've found the best results with. Demolish works so well because a typical end game build with randuins/thornmail and spirit visage gives you a lot of health. Conditioning is more reliable than the other two, as you want the resists for later as oppose to early game. Aftershock is currently broken and works really well with your E. Second Wind is really just there because the other 2 suck.

Triumph can be really clutch and is fun to use, and Coup De Grace is just some extra damage on your ult which is always useful.

UPDATED RUNES - Second Wind is just more useful than the others in lane, and Revitalize is the most useful of the 3. Unflinching is also an option, but my personal preference is for Revitalize so that you heal more with your Q.

Masteries Back to Top

Ferocity tree is really good right now and Darius can abuse high offense. Cunning tree doesn't really provide as much for a laner as it does a jungler, so if you want to jungle Darius you might put your last 12 into that. Resolve however is basic tank stats and it really helps for top laners.

EDIT - After playing around with the other trees, I think I over estimated how good the Ferocity tree is. I really like the cunning tree for the biscuits (they help a lot and let you start Cull without getting out sustained). The resolve tree is amazing for Darius as it is just straight defenses which helps Darius out. Grasp of the Undying isn't that noticeable, but it makes a difference. 0/12/18 also leaves you tanky enough that you can build Trinity Force again!

EDIT 2 - After playing around with a more regen based build, I have found this build is way better than the previous one. The sustain you get with these masteries is insane. If you are ever low, just hold back for a minute or two and you will be near 3/4 hp. It's a really good set up. In the Resolve tree, you can take Tough Skin instead of Explorer if you prefer it, but I prefer Explorer to walk through bushes to get into range.

EDIT 3 - Opressor > Bounty Hunter, you never really notice either but Bounty Hunter is a little risky since theres a chance you wont kill everyone, and opressor gives you the bonus no matter what, even if you have no kills.

EDIT: July 04 2016 - This is still the standard page, even with Grasp nerfs. No other keystone can compete with Grasp, besides possibly Thunderlod's which is too far into the cunning tree (which is not worth investing too many points into on Darius). If you do put 18 into cunning because you want to mess around in a normal, go 12/18 (same points into ferocity as the ones shown above) with Wanderer, Assassin, Merciless, Dangerous Game, Intelligence, and either Thunderlord's or Stormraider's. Either or is ok, it is up to your preference. These masteries will make you very squishy, this is the page I run for full damage burst Darius (never do this in ranked).

Q level one always, there's really no reason to get W first since the attack speed slow was removed. You can get E if you are invading but it'll put you behind on the early levels if you don't get a kill. You will rarely be getting kills early on as Darius gets most of his damage late game now.

Max q first as it scales the hardest with levels. Next max E. W got utterly shafted with the rework, and a 1 second cooldown reduction is nothing compared to the benefits that maxing E will give you (3 second cd reduction per point, 5% armor pen per point). It's a shame, and it really hurts Darius against auto attackers. He is now just a safer, less aggressive laner. Max W last as it's really underwhelming to max it before anything else.

Max R > Q > E > W

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Doran's shield with the Second Wind is insanely good. You take way less damage (you deal a little less but it's still worth it)). The extra damage to minions on autos is also a benefit to help you cs and push waves.
Start this if you want a more aggressive start. You will be missing out on the regen and basic attack damage block from shield but will have more ad and lifesteal.

Core Items

1st item - I will talk about when to take each one down below, but I usually take Black Cleaver over Trinity Force post patch 6.3.
2nd item - Always get Randuins. If you really really prefer Dead Man's Plate, get it, but Randuin's is definitely the superior choice. It is not as easy as it once was to get armour, so any extra amount counts. Plus with the amount of crits in the game at the moment, Randuin's passive beats out Dead Man's Plate's passive.
3rd item - The Spirit Visage CDR + higher MR make it a really strong purchase.
Boots - Swiftness if you really need help catching up to the enemy, Mercury Treads against a heavy CC team, Ninja Tabi against a heavy AD team (especially if they have a lot of auto attackers).

Situational Items

    I'll talk about these below.
    Look below.
Example Final Build 1 This is a more tankier build. I'd get Sterak's if I'm being focused and Titanic has amazing synergy with Sterak's (you have a ton of HP with this build).
Example Final Build 2 This is a typical final build I use, as the Youmuu's gives you enough speed to catch up to carrys and 1 shot them. I'd only get this if I was building Youmuu's first, then decided I needed to get more tank after Youmuu's was built. The only problem with this build is that it gives you 40% cdr, meaning you cant run the 10% cdr from runes to help your early-mid game.
Example Final Build 3 - I'd build this if I can not get in range of their squishies or I just need extra damage and can afford to skip out on some tank items. This is the build I use 80% of the time.
Ok so to start this, look at your team composition. If you are the only bruiser on the team, then you are going to have to build more tank later on. This really sucks, I know. Even if you have 3 bruisers, one of you has to be the tank unless you are steamrolling them. You can't judge this from the start of the game though - you don't know if your amumu is going full tank or will build some AP. That's fine if he is, just try to confirm that there is one tank on the team in champ select. You will be incredibly tanky anyway with a standard build.

Ok so I will break down when it is best to buy each of these items.

3083.pngIf you are finding you are not tanky enough and don't need any resistances, get this. It'll help with your titanic damage too. It's a really solid last item and it's incredibly strong this patch. Very useful item. Do not buy this item against health shredders (botrk users, vayne, kog). It's a rather underwhelming item at the moment. Flat health is never useful, and the CDR complicates things with your build. I rarely if ever buy it.

3110.pngDead man's or randuins are better buys than this. Only get this if you have Randuins and the auto attackers are still ruining you.

3142.pngIf you need the speed + armor pen, this is very useful. The increased AD on it makes it a really solid purchase in place of when you would buy Last Whisperer post 5.22. I build this almost every game. It is basically core at this point.

3026.pngBeing focused and need more of both resistances quickly? This will be your go to item. This + Youmuu's are my go to last 2 items.

3075.pngThis item is really good against auto attackers that don't crit as much - such as kalista. Randuins is really good against heavy crits. I still prefer Randuins for the slow + more health, but will also get Thornmail if they have a fed carry that crits hard such as Trist (even though the cold steel passive does not stack it can still be useful).

3153.pngGet this if you want the slow on this instead of the movement speed bonus on Youmuu's. Both are good items that can be interchangeable. Botrk is better vs high health targets and Youmuu's is better at assasinating squishies. You can get this as a last item with Youmuu's to shred health stackers / catch up to carries with high attack speed.

3748.pngMediocre when you want some damage and health. The auto attack reset is very useful for applying 5 stacks. The synergy with Warmogs is amazing. A good final build with this would include either Warmogs or Sterak's Gage. Since it was nerfed, it usually isn't a good buy.

3812.pngIt is some extra damage and lifesteal. This can help you assassinate the enemy squishies. It can replace Youmuu's for more damage and lifesteal, but no penetration.

3053.pngIf you need the health and passive then Sterak's is a good item to get (especially if they have no AP and you are looking for something to replace Maw with). The passive on this and Maw do not stack, so get one or the
other.

3156.png If you have Spirit Visage and still need MR, and don't have / plan to get Sterak's, this can be a great purchase. The nerfs to the passive hurt it, but it is still a solid item, and even offers a little armour penetration which could work great with Youmuu's, or you can get Guardian's Angel + Maw + Spirit Visage to stack MR.

3078.png or 3071.png?

Ok so pre-patch 5.22 I would always get Black Cleaver. Before the Darius rework I would always get Trinity. With the changes to Trinity (adding cdr and removing the AP) this item is insanely useful on Darius. The nerfs to Darius increased his Q mana cost and the mana from Trinity Force can help Darius deal with that. The only reason to buy Black Cleaver over Trinity previously is because Black Cleaver gave way more health and was way cheaper. The armor shred is still really good on Darius, but with games ending quicker in 5.22 there isn't a whole lot of armor to shred. Trinity force gives Darius crits, movement speed to help catch up to carries, and sheen passive. Sheen + crit + w can do over 1500 damage in one auto late game, it's amazing. Darius also takes down towers way quicker than he does with Black Cleaver. With a 0/12/18 page you will not be that squishy which allows you to build Trinity force first, and if you do feel like you are squishy you can build some resistances then continue on with your Trinity force. The components on Trinity are all useful. Sheen gives you burst, Phage gives you tankyness and speed, and zeal gives you movement speed and crits. With Trinity, Darius is more of a burst ad caster. With Black Cleaver, Darius is more of a tank shredder.

Now, with all that said, Black Cleaver is still good on Darius, I just prefer Trinity Force. If you prefer Black Cleaver, then feel free to keep building it. You may want to keep a tankier build with Black Cleaver however as it is easier to kite Darius without the movement speed from Trinity Force.

EDIT 1: Post patch 6.3
I really like Black Cleaver on Darius again. I started building it against Malphites and realized just how useful the passive on Black Cleaver is. Sure you lose the 5% movement speed and the burst from Trinity Force, but you gain a ton of armor shred, more ad, more CDR to help you reach 40% CDR, and more health. I'm finding better results with Black Cleaver too. I really like Trinity Darius, but I feel like it just isn't that great compared to Black Cleaver. I still run Trinity Force if I'm messing around in normals with full AD Darius, but if I'm actually trying Black Cleaver is the way to go. I know I am completely contradicting everything I said previously, but it's just the better option. If my mind changes again I'll definitely update this guide again.

Edit 2: July 04 2016 - Black Cleaver all the way still. One of the reasons the old Trinity Force was so good on Darius was because of the crit. Now that it's changed, Darius doesn't benefit from Attack Speed as much as he did before the rework. The extra CDR makes it so that if you do instead build Trinity Force instead of Black Cleaver, you won't be behind on CDR. I would get Trinity Force over Black Cleaver if I really wanted burst, and they had no armour (and wouldn't build armour (probably only in a custom)).

VS

Aatrox

Medium

This match up got incredibly harder due to Darius losing his attack speed slow. Never let him Q on you, and dodge his E. He can kill you at 6 easily. Your best option against Aatrox is to roam with TP. Randuins is really useful against him. Don't try to duel him, just farm up.

VS

Akali

Easy

You'll be really tanky and Akali has trouble killing tanks. Easy match up since the rework. As she is leaving you can Q her to heal some of the damage she does with pokes. Just notice when she hits 6 as she can dash to you despite you flashing away. Stay away from her shroud as she can hit you then go back to being invisible. Maw is useful against Akali.

VS

Alistar

Easy

Not really that common anymore but this is an okay match up - spam Q on him. Your ult ignores his ult. If he builds AP he might be able to kill you so build some MR and you are good.

VS

Azir

Easy

No one plays this guy top - but I can't really see why. He is really good top lane - and he ruins melee top laners quite hard. Honestly if you are going up against this guy then roam He can't do anything when you roam. He takes down towers fairly quickly, but you can ignore him for the most part. He should be fairly squishy. If you can't kill him then build MR and hope to come out of the laning phase even. Rushing Banshees might be a good idea.

VS

Blitzcrank

Easy

People only do this in normals. Spam Q. He can do some damage, but just build mr. Extremely easy.

VS

Caitlyn

Medium

If it's just her then try your very best to not take that much damage until you hit you hit level 6. Once you hit level 6 all in her and kill her, you might need to flash to get into range but that'll be fine as long as she dies. If you took too much damage then stay back and wait until you have wardens. Rush wardens then swifties / phage to get into range then to kill her. The higher elo you are, the harder this matchup is. If you can get a gank then you are set. If you are ahead, then this matchup is fairly easy.

VS

Cassiopeia

Easy

Rare matchup but possible. Build MR, when you think she is going to ult right click away then turn back. Dodge her Q and W and you should be good. If you are losing rush banshees. Even if you are losing though one gank and this match up is in your favour. Just know that she can still do a lot of damage if even or ahead.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

You need to be aggressive, but not too aggressive. Cho can kill you at 6, but you can kill him at 6. His sustain is insane. Just becareful of your mana and dodge his ruptures the best you can. Once he's at 6 he probably kill you if you are near or below half hp. Build MR once he starts doing damage. Deny him from farming with Q. If he's hitting minions or using spells on minions then that is your time to strike. Try your best to bait out his skills, then kill him. If he can last hit minions then he can sustain heavily. You won't be able to kill him this way. If Cho is low then he might back and that is your time to push. When he's back and a minion wave is at his tower then he will either lose xp or waste teleport, which means you can TP bot for dragon. Black cleaver will help if he rushed armor (he will probably rush Rod of Ages first).

VS

Darius

Medium

Bait out his Q and hit him with your Q. If you can combo him faster than he can combo you you win congrats. Not much to say here. If you are losing rush randuins and stay away from him.

VS

Diana

Easy

Spam Q and dodge her Q. She can surprisingly deal some damage if she builds right, but this is usually a really easy match up. You will probably be camped though so ward up with your trinket.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Spam Q and dodge his Q. He still does dmg to you. If he is Q happy build some MR but make sure you build offensively. If you can kill him and get ahead he will be mostly useless late game. If he's ahead just wait until laning phase is over and be SURE not to feed him kills (Even if he's at 100 cs and you are at 70). This matchup is about even but you definitely have the upper hand here. Freeze your lane and Q him whenever he gets near minions. Stand behind yours to dodge his cleavers. If you see he is trying to farm with them then you can stand in front of your minions to deny him farm (definitely do this for your cannon). Watch your HP as he can kill you easily if you are low. You are better at roaming than Mundo.

VS

Elise

Easy

Dodge cocoon, spam q and grab, once your 6 shes a free kill. Very easy now that she's been nerfed so hard. Build MR if she starts doing damage.

VS

Evelynn

Easy

Rare, but spam Q, build some MR, easy kill at 6. Build swifties early if you can't catch up to her.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

Hook when he drains. Ward bushes so he can't surprise ult you. You can kill him very easily, but if he catches you by surprise he can kill you. Mostly an easy match up though. If they have a tanky jungler be careful as they can dive and kill you. He can also stop your dunk with fear or silence. You can roam a million times better than he can with TP. If he's left all alone top when you TP he can't push well, and he does little damage to towers. Free dragon for your team as long as he doesn't TP.

VS

Fiora

Medium
Use Q on her, when shes around level 2 or 3 try to bait out her riposte (it can be obvious at times to tell, a lot of them like to use it at the same time every trade) then hit her with your q. Don't ult until after she has used riposte. Pay close attention to your vitals, especially after 6. If you have a vital facing away from her then feel free to trade her and spam q. If you have one facing her try and stay away from her until the vital resets. #1 thing to remember is to never let her proc her ult, always make sure she doesn't proc that last vital no matter what, because if she does you won't be able to kill her through the healing. It can be worth it to start building dead man's plate if she gets too far ahead.

VS

Fizz

Medium

Build MR, dodge his ult and if you are low flash away from his e. If you are low it's a good idea to recall. He can E in the middle of your dunk (it won't go on cooldown) so just be aware of that. Only apprehend if his E is on cooldown or else when you pull him he will just E away. When you pull him he might Q through you to safety, so you might want to step back after you pull (not always a good idea). Shut him down early on and he wont be a problem later. Denying him farm / zoning him is also really useful. Just make sure you don't get ganked and buy wards because if he's ahead it'll be really hard to do anything without dying. Since your rework, he can auto you freely with his W. You want to kite him around, so when he Qs through you, you auto w Q and if he E's again you can pull him back and finish the job. MR is heavily needed against Fizz.

VS

Galio

Easy

With ganks you might die from his ult. Just make you don't attack him under his tower after 6. Dodge his skill shots (which are fairly easy - if you can't build MR and swifties). Really easy to kill and he doesn't do much damage once you get MR. You can deny him farm easily and when he uses his abilities to farm under tower you will have an opening to pull him and kill him. He will also run out of mana easily if he spams his abilities. Once hes out of mana you can either kill him or tp. He won't be able to follow your tp without mana.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Way harder since his rework. Still not that hard of a match up, you just have to pay more attention to win it. Stay away from his barrels. It's really easy to just walk away from them and they even have a timer on when to activate that you can see. Deny him farm so that hes forced to use Q and E on minions, and when he does you throw a Q pull auto W on him for free damage. You can even wait until he eats his oranges to use W on him so he doesn't cleanse the slow. Build armor when he starts to deal damage (he will) and roam frequently will teleport. Still an easy match up, except now instead of eating Qs you have to watch out for his barrels and try to dodge them to not take any damage. He's also harder to kill now, but not that much harder. Still a very easy match up, just requires more thinking.

VS

Garen

Easy

He can do some big damage to you. It's a very even match up. Be sure to buffer your W (read below in Advanced Techniques section) when he silences you so you aren't just autoing for a few seconds. Build armor if he's ahead, but try to space yourself so you can Q him but he can't catch up to you. Might be worth it to buy swifties after armor. If you are ahead he is usually a free kill. Watch for ganks later on as if he builds tanky (which he probably will) you will get tower dived and killed. Roam a lot with TP as he doesn't roam that well and he doesn't take towers that quickly either (he can push quick though).

VS

Gnar

Easy

Don't eat too much poke before 6. Once you are 6 you can kill him whenever you pull him (as long as he doesn't leap away). Armor rush is needed against Gnar. If you pull him while he has leap make sure to W him before he leaps away so you can catch up to him. As long as you can catch up to mini gnar he's pretty much dead. My one tip though is PAY ATTENTION TO HIS RAGE. DO NOT FIGHT GNAR WHEN HE IS MEGA GNAR, YOU WILL DIE. Even if you are ahead, Gnar can EASILY kill you in Mega Gnar. Mega Gnar is crazy op, so just be careful. You can fight him though if you can dodge all of his CC but it's better to be safe and wait until hes mini to kill him - you won't take nearly as much damage anyway. He's a very annoying character, but as long as you are patient you will see an opening to kill him.

VS

Gragas

Easy

This one is generally pretty easy. Dodge his q, you can grab him when he's mid E, just don't take damage from his W. Becareful of his ult especially if you think you will get ganked. Try not to go too far into his tower range as he has a lot of cc. Once you have ult he's usually a free kill.

VS

Graves

Easy

He has low range so you can usually grab him and kill him. Rush armor if you are losing. If you will die from his ult just flash behind him to dodge it. Easiest of all the ADCs. If he has a support though be really careful. Swifties and trinity are the optimal build in this match up.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

This one is harder if he builds tanky. The important thing to do is stay out of range of his q while hitting him with your q. As long as you can stay with the higher hp lead then you should be fine. I would advise getting tank items more sooner than later as he surprisingly does a lot of damage. He can solo you pretty easily just as likely as you can solo him. Keep flash up if you want to fight him to dodge his ult. It's not a hard match up once you get the hang of it, but it can be difficult at first. His E will almost always catch up to you so try to buffer up a W while he is knocking you back to negate the stun part of it. If you are losing stay under tower as he won't be able to dive you unless you are really far behind. He can roam better than you once he is 6 so be sure to either TP to follow him, take tower, or tp before him.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

Stay away from his turrets (might mean you have to stay at your tower). Dodge his stun as it could lead to him killing you. If you can pull him under your tower then that is a free kill especially if you are at level 6. Rush MR if you need it. If you are ahead you can just walk up to him and kill him. Try to stay patient and look for an opening. You can roam with tp better than he can.

VS

Irelia

Medium

Way easier since the rework, despite losing the attack speed slow. Throw out Qs to heal, and never try dueling her if she has the upper hand (if you have a little more hp than her, she has the upper hand as she can stun you). Her true damage autos here, and Dead Man's Plate gives you health to hurt her true damage and armor to hurt her physical damage. It's a relatively even match up. Try to not let her farm too much, but don't fully engage on her. The only poke you should be doing for the most part is throwing out Qs to deny her farm. Buffer W if you think she is going to stun you, and kite her around with your slows. If she's ahead this match up is a nightmare. It's mostly a skill match up now.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

His early game damage is crazy, and unless you can get enough autos and bleeds on him he he will out trade you. Dodge his Q and he will be nothing. His full combo can kill you, so as long as you build tanky it is easy mode. Survive his burst then he has nothing for another 6ish seconds. That is your moment to kill him.

VS

Jax

Medium

Way harder since the rework. When you throw a Q, he will probably jump onto you. When he does this all you can do is slow him and run. Rarely can you duel him late game, but early - mid game you can definitely duel him and win. Deny him farm as much as possible, and when he comes close Q him. Once he jumps onto you and does his combo you pull him back and fight him. If he stays run back a bit so he's out of his auto range and kite him. Can get many kills this way.

VS

Jayce

Hard

Insanely harder since the rework. Previously you could pull him when he was in ranged form and he couldn't auto you. Now that you don't have an attack speed slow Jayce is incredibly hard to deal with. He will kite you constantly and your best bet is to rush armor and tp somewhere else to get kills to deal with Jayce. You can kill him, but it's hard without help. If you pull him he will push you away. Surviving laning phase is your goal. If you are ahead, it's an easy match up.

VS

Karthus

Easy

Dodge his Q, hit with your Q. Pull him if you won't die from his AoE plus q. As long as you dodge his Q you wont even need to buy MR. This match up is extremely easy. Swifties and triforce help you catch up to him and dodge his Qs. Once you are 6, you can dunk him when hes at half and it will kill him (although you probably won't even need ult). TPing to other lanes is a good idea because he won't be able to take your tower.

VS

Katarina

Easy

Pull her when she ults. Spam q on her. If she gets too close auto w auto q. Free kill at 6. Get tp to roam and get kills. She will not be able to get tower any time soon. She is also a horrible pusher early on. MR if she builds some damage and you can't catch her. Very easy match up.

VS

Kayle

Hard

Nightmare difficulty since the rework. Darius has no attack speed slow, and kayle's auto attacks hurt a lot. Rush armor if shes going ad, mr if shes going ap. Never duel her after 6 if she has her ult up (she ALWAYS has it up too, it's like a 30 second cooldown). She can get movement speed through her W (it also heals) and her autos are on the very edge of the blade of your Q. You can rarely catch her, and if you do she will kill you. Try to roam to other lanes for kills. Play this one safe unless you see an opportunity to kill.

VS

Kennen

Hard

Hide in bushes and try to hit him with Q. Becareful as he can turn and kill you if you are not smart about it. Becareful when pulling him as he can lightning rush to apply a stack of his passive, then stun you with the rest of his abilities. Stay out of his ult unless you know you can kill him. It will be hard to grab him. Your best bet is to rush MR and wait until he slips and gets too close while he has no energy or everything is on cooldown. Flash swifties and phage help you to catch up with him. TP to roam and get kills in other lanes. If he is ahead then this match up is pure hell. You can roam if he does get ahead.

VS

Kha'Zix

Easy

Kha zix does a lot of damage but he is very squishy. Build some tank. Early on if you get one or two kills on him then you can freely kill him whenever. He can ult to stop your ult if hes good, but you can pull him if hes mid leap and hes trying to leap away. After his initial Leap + q + w you should have already applied auto + W + auto. Sheen ruins squishies and kha zix is very squishy so that should help kill him greatly. It's an easy match up as long as you don't die early on.

VS

Lee Sin

Easy

Hide behind minions and Q him. As long as his Q misses, you should win this match up. He can stop your ult with his ult. If you are behind then build some armor as he will fall off way quicker than you'd think. That is unless he is fed and is building damage. In that case, wait until his Q and E are on cooldown then kill him with everything + ignite. Just dodge his Qs. Also pay attention to his energy. If hes low on energy you can probably duel him and win. You can also pull him while he is mid w. If you time your apprehend, you can pull him while he ults you to pull him closer to you while you are kicked away. Your W really hurts the energy return on his passive too. Build armor if he starts becoming a threat immediately.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

People pick this to counter Darius a lot - it does not work. Dodge her Q, and hit her with your Q. Your E stuns while they are being grabbed, so you can grab her right when she is about to E away from you to stop her from being able to teleport to it. Hide in bushes to hit Q auto w auto auto then E when she freezes you to get an auto or two more in, or a Q if it is at a higher rank. Build MR if she does too much damage, and swifties to catch up to her. Your phage passive really helps in the match up too. Her ult can stop your ult, so be careful if  you are low and she has high hp and you are both 6. She has a lot of CC so ganks will ruin you, ward up. It's an easy match up and you should be getting fed off this. She runs out of mana quickly too so you can push her to her tower and force her to use abilities to farm.

VS

Lucian

Easy

Any pull you get is a free kill. Don't take damage from him which is quite easy as he has low range. You can grab him mid dash. Your W will completely ruin him. Farm under tower if he pushes and wait until he is in grab range, then kill him. You might not even need ult in some cases, but if you do do not be afraid to ult ignite him even if he is at 1/2 hp as he will definitely try to flash away if he has it. Build Randuins first if you are falling behind, or are eating too much poke. With a support this match up can be a nightmare, but he is the easiest of any top lane adc there is thanks to his low range + squishyness + no cc.

VS

Lulu

Hard

Pre 6 go for grabs and try to kill her. Your ult will do a lot of damage to her. Dodge her Qs. They do a ton of damage and as long as you dodge them you will be fine. She can stop your ult with her ult and when she transforms you. It can be difficult, so buy MR. Even with MR her q will do a lot of damage to you. You can kill her no problem if you are ahead. If you are behind wait until tower and look for an opening. If you are low recall. Her ult will ruin your ignite + bleed damage over time combo too, so know about that. It can be a really tough match up at first, but over time you will get more used to it. It is still a very difficult match up as she has a lot of ways to poke you (even with autos) while you are out of range and punishing you when you are in range.

VS

Malphite

Easy

Buy MR. Malphite has high base damage, and if he is tanky he will throw out a lot of poke. Try not to get in range if he slows your attack speed. Keep bleed stacks on him as much as possible to get rid of his shield. Without his shield he can run out of mana fairly quick. He can farm decently well under tower compared to most APs, but he still runs out of mana quick. You can kill him at 6. Try to save flash to dodge his ult especially if you are diving him. Once you have MR he doesn't do much. Fairly easy match up, although it can be difficult at first.

VS

Maokai

Medium

Spam Q on him, but be warned that he can turn on you and out damage you. When you see him about to w onto you auto w to stop his knockback from stunning you too much. Build some MR, and know that you won't out damage Maokai as he will sustain too much. He is also very tanky, and if hes squishy because he has the wrong runes and masteries then just spam q and kill him. This is a hard match up, and unless he misses a lot of his abilities he will probably out damage you. When he ults, try to run away as any damage you do to him will be stored in his ult making his ult do more damage. When he starts to back off after he ults pull him and start damaging him. You might damage him enough for ult ignite to kill him. If not try to make him farm under tower as he will run out of mana eventually (will take a long time with flash + 3 pots). Ward up as you will die from a gank even if you have flash. Do not be afraid to build tank and only farm.

VS

Master Yi

Easy

Yi can do a lot of damage to you once he hits 6. Before 6 though, zone him. Any time he tries to hit a minion you can poke him. If he Qs a minion then thats a free kill for you. After 6 build some armor and know that he will try to Q when you ult him. After 6 this match up goes in Yis favour for the most part if you are squishy. Try to kill him before he kills you. Save apprehend for when he is trying to escape, not when he is meditating as if you have no pull he will just run away (can't be slowed from his ult). If hes ahead you should stay under tower and pray he can't dive you (ult and ignite him once you have 5 stacks). Armor ruins his day. Just try to run away from his ult if he can kill you. If you are ahead, then you should be 12/0 by the time laning phase is over. If you build right (wardens + giants belt if he still does damage to you), even when he is 6 he won't be doing much to hurt you.

VS

Miss Fortune

Easy

Rare. Pull her and she is a free kill. q pull auto w auto and damage her until she is dead. Super easy match up. Buy armor if you need it (you probably won't).

VS

Mordekaiser

Easy

Spam Q, don't grab him unless he's running away. Very easy match up. Build MR if you need it. Stand away from minions as he will try to use his abilities on them. He has long cast times so you can punish him while those are going on. Honestly there is no reason to lose this match up. Incredibly easy as long as you wait for his abilities to go on cool down (they will, all mordes will try to push the lane with their abilities). At 6 he is a free kill, especially with ignite.

VS

Nasus

Easy

Spam Q whenever he is close to a minion. You do not want him to farm at all. Do not push the wave, but do not be afraid to hit minions with your Q. Only push at very early levels where his Q is on a 7 second cooldown. In this match up you want to freeze the lane as much as possible while punishing him for getting near. Ward up as you probably will be ganked. Nasus will build some tank, and he might try harassing you. Kite him with Q auto w auto and it should over run his damage (he has a lot of sustain too so keep that in mind). If he is ahead he can kill you very easily, but if you are ahead you can kill him easily. Pay attention to his mana. His wither is annoying, but if he keeps spamming it he will run out of mana. Save your grab for when wither will leave you just barely in reach of him). If you are ahead, don't roam too much as he can catch back up with farm. Just try your best to keep him zoned out as best as you can for a majority of the game.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

No one does this match up any more, but it is easy. Dodge traps, stand behind minions to dodge Q, pull her and you can kill her even early on. Ignite and exhaust really help here. As long as she cant put a mark on you, you win this match up. If she goes ad stand back and let her push so you can grab her when she is in your tower's range. At 6 you should be able to kill her, especially with ignite.

VS

Nunu

Easy

Rare and annoying. Buy MR and his snowball does nothing. Hit him with Q when you can. You can kill him once you are 6 as long as you can keep him in range. Flash helps a lot with this. Build a lot of damage if you can as he will get tanky quick and if you don't have damage you won't be able to do much to him. Pull him under tower and you can get free poke or even a kill if you are 6 or he is low. Get ignite as if he tries to consume a minion he will only heal for about 50%. Pull him if he tries to ult you. Save pull if he is 6 and you know he will try to ult you. Overall it is a very easy match up as he can not kill you but you can kill him.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

This is your hardest match up. A good panth, whether it be mid, jungle, or even top will ruin your day. If you are in range to Q, he is in range to stun auto q e you which will deal 1/4 to 2/4 of your hp no problem, even if he is not fed. Wait for minions to reach your tower, and just farm. Don't let him poke you too much. If he goes under your tower to poke you then apprehend him and auto w (auto immediately if you think he will stun you right when you pull him). You may get him low enough to ult ignite and kill him once you have 5 stacks on him. Build armor immediately. If he gets too far ahead, it's pretty much over. Roam or stay really far back, as you won't be getting kills until after laning, if you do get any. Build tank if you fall behind, sheen (your w and sheen go through his passive) and wardens if you are ahead. If you are really far ahead build swifties and phage to catch up to him and grab him, then when he stuns you kill a minion to get a speed boost and catch up to him. You should be able to kill him if he does not flash (if he does you can flash as well). DO NOT GO UNDER TOWER AGAINST PANTHEON. Also do not rely on him running out of mana as flask + 3 pots will leave him with plenty of mana.

VS

Poppy

Easy

This was an easy match up before the patch, and it is still incredibly easy now (maybe even a little easier considering she has less damage). Whenever she goes to get her shield hit her with Q and try to get 5 stacks on her (Q, auto, auto / w (if she is going to go out of range) auto /w (if you didn't w before), E if she gets out, and keep autoing. Your second Q should be enough to kill her (especially with ignite), and that's an easy first blood. Even if she's ahead she isn't much of a threat. Build armor / hp if she becomes a problem (dead man's is good since she won't be auto attacking that much for randuin's to be worth it). Deny her CS by freezing the wave and Qing if she gets near.

VS

Quinn

Hard

You might have to use q to farm, but whatever you do don't push the wave. Quinn can freeze the lane really easily and make you pay. Try not to take any poke, and wait until you are farming under your tower. From there wait until she is too close, grab her, auto w, chase her and try to kill her. You can W through her blind. Swifties, Phage help you catch up and Wardens lowers her damage. You can apprehend her while she is mid jump. Once you have a hold of her you can probably kill her as long as everything she has is on cooldown. When she switches from Valor to Quinn she does a ton of damage, so unless you are at high hp you should be running. If you are at high hp you can probably kill her. Do not be afraid to ult and ignite her early as she has lots of ways to escape, not even including flash.

VS

Rammus

Easy

Spam q, if he tries anything he will run out of mana. Build tank if he deals too much damage. If you get ahead you can freely kill him. At 6 you can probably kill him if you didn't take too much poke or are out of mana. Really easy match up, run away and Q while he charges up his q into you. Buffer your w when his q is about to knock you back. You should have 4 or 5 bleed stacks by the time his e ends. If it does not keep damaging him with q auto w auto until he is low enough to kill with ignite. Try not to attack him too much when he is in his w armor stance. He reflects your autos and you can kill yourself pretty quickly if you are not smart about. Run away if he can kill you with his ult (unlikely though). Easy match up.

VS

Renekton

Hard

Pay attention to his fury. If you are hit by his furied abilities, you will take a LOT of damage. Build Randuins almost immediately unless he is bad and is squishy. Becareful when you Q him as he can dash to you when you are in range to Q. If you see him dash to you get ready to buffer your W as chances are he will E > auto > w > auto > q > E away. You won't be able to auto him at all when he does this, but you might be able to catch him with an E and punish him back while he is slowed. BECAREFUL THOUGH AS HE CAN TURN AND KILL YOU. He tanks way more damage than you do, especially early. Just be patient, and wait until you have armor before you try anything. He can dive you fairly easily with his ult. This match up is mostly the waiting game.

VS

Rengar

Medium

STAY AS FAR AS YOU CAN AWAY FROM BUSHES. A good Rengar will win this match up if he can leap to you from a bush. Whatever you do, stay away from bushes. Run away from him when he tries to Q you, especially when he has full fury. He will walk near minions when he tries to heal so hide behind yours so he can't bola strike you and hit him with a q. NEVER get hit by a full fury bola strike as that will snare you. Rengar has crazy high damage early on and it is definitely worth it to buy armor first. If you are ahead, this match up can be very easy. Buy pinks if you are winning and he keeps ulting away. Pulling him under your tower is almost a guaranteed kill. If Rengar gets too far ahead he will snowball out of control, so if you are behind just stay as far as possible and wait for ganks if you do get any. However, do not expect or rely on ganks to win your lane.

VS

Riven

Medium

This match up changed, and it's not harder or easier. It's just different since the rework. The main idea here is to hit her with your q. Always bait out her cooldowns and you will have an easy time killing her. Build armor early if you need it. After she blows all her cooldowns on you, if you think you can pull her while shes running do it. If she ults, she usually will win the fight if she knows what shes doing (assuming its an even lane). Using teleport to make plays at bot then coming back with a kill + dragon makes your lane a thousand times easier. Do not underestimate her power though, as she can 1v1 you and win.

VS

Rumble

Easy

Hide behind minions when he is about to harpoon you. Run away from flamespitter, and when that is on cooldown you can damage him. At 6 simply step away from his ult, and if you are low you might need to flash away. Make sure you dodge his Es as he can get some free poke on you with flames as you are slowed. Spam Q on him as it will lower him a lot, and as long as you aren't taking too much poke you should be able to kill him especially at 6. DO NOT FEED RUMBLE, a fed rumble will carry his team very easily. If you are behind try to pull him under tower to kill him, and if that does not work then just wait until laning phase is over and farm up. Build MR if he gets too much poke on you.

VS

Ryze

Hard

The hardest Darius counter. Buy MR and never get in range to Q him after 6, as that means he can perma snare you. All you can do is wait for ganks, roam, or stay under tower. Not a fun match up. His 6 is way stronger than yours. If you cant kill him at levels 1-5 then you are not going to win lane without ganks unless that ryze is horrible.

VS

Shaco

Easy

I've done this match up once. Play it like you play against teemo, except his traps are shrooms. Q him whenever you can. If his poke is too strong then stay back and build mr if hes ap or randuins if hes ad. Ward bushes and buy pinks to see where he Qs. Very easy if hes ad, a bit tricky if hes AP. He can be very slippery. One Q won't kill traps early, but it will around level 9. Watch out for the shaco illuminati triangle, where he puts his boxes into a triangle to fear you into the next box, which fears you into the next box, etc (search Pink Ward Shaco on youtube to see what I am talking about).

VS

Shen

Medium

Spam Q on him. Buffer your W while he taunts. Fully stacked bleed + ult + ignite will do a lot of damage to him, especially early. If he is ulting, stop it with your E. Shen surprisingly does a fair amount of damage, so if you need to build some MR. If you play too aggressive and he taunts you in the middle of a giant minion wave then he will probably kill you. Just play it smart, as you probably wont be able to kill him unless he plays dumb. You can pull him while he is mid dash to negate the taunt. If Shen is fed he can kill you no problem. If you are fed you can kill shen no problem. Just do not be afraid to build tank and try not to eat too many Qs.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

This is an interesting match up. She is fairly tanky, and if you don't dodge her E you will have a tough time. If she lands an E she will w, run up to you, auto, q, auto, then keep autoing. As long as you dodge that E then attack her when it is on cool down you should win. You can pull her when she is mid ult leap. Build a wardens if you are even or behind. If you can't kill her then just farm or roam. If she smites you then auto w auto and back off unless you can kill her. She does a ton of damage with smite.

VS

Singed

Easy

Q him when he gets too close, w him when hes about to fling you. Grab when hes out of range and you can flash to get the last auto + ult in. Ignite helps to reduce the healing on his ult. Relatively easy match up, but if hes ahead he can be hard to kill while still doing some damage. He probably won't be ahead though.

VS

Sion

Easy

Spam Q, and dodge his Q, and E. If he is walking over to you with his W then just auto w auto q to break it and keep autoing him until q and w are off cooldown. If he is running too far then grab him and damage him until he is low enough to ult. Super easy match up. Sion is just a meat shield and you do a lot of damage. Your E stops his Q making it deal no damage as well. Your Q eats up all the poke he can do, as long as you land it.

VS

Sivir

Medium

You won't be facing her in top lane, but you will be trying to kill her as killing their adc is your primary goal. Try to use q to break her spell shield, as your e will also pop it. You want to save your e and w to grab and slow her to keep her in reach as once she is in reach she is a free kill as long as her spell shield is down. Randuins should help slow her, Youmuu's will help you catch up to her, botrk will do both but won't do much damage to her, trinity and swifties will also help you greatly in catching up to her. An unexpected flash pull can also help but if she has good reactions she will spell shield just in time making you waste flash. Try your best to trick her. She can kite you easily.

VS

Skarner

Easy

Spam Q to break his shield and poke him. Easy match up. Dodge his e as he can really stick to you especially if hes ahead. He should never kill you unless he gets a gank, which his ult really helps him with. He should be a free kill. He should never be in range to Q you, and if he is you auto w auto q grab auto then spam q w and autos until he is low enough to be ulted and ignited if you even need it.

VS

Swain

Easy

#1 rule against swain - Dodge his w. As long as you dodge his w, you can q pull auto w auto and out trade him way harder than he can out trade you. It's usually a pretty easy match up, but good swains will kite you hard by staying just out of range of your pull. Build MR if you are even or behind. Using phage passive will help you get in range to kill Swain. As long as you dodge his W and don't eat too much poke from his E + Q you should win this match up (It's relatively easy once you get the hang of it). If you teleport bot then you could do so much more than if Swain tried. He is also horrible at taking towers, so roaming is super strong against him.

VS

Talon

Medium

Build armor as he can 1v1 you and kill you. If you dodge his W you can Q him. If he Es to you auto w auto q. 50 50 match up as you both can kill each other pretty easily. Buy a pink to put down when he ults. This is an uncommon match up though but it can be hard if talon plays it smart. Talon can ult and stop your ult too (it won't go on cooldown). Exhaust can greatly help in this match up.

VS

Teemo

Medium

Your W goes through his blind. This will help you greatly. Before 6, do not eat too much poke. Try to Q, grab, auto, w, auto then wait for the blind to end while Qing off cooldown. Buy MR if you are being poked too much. It's pretty easy to kill him, but just notice where he places his shrooms. Do not let him kite you into those shrooms. To play it safe you usually are forced to walk behind your minions as they walk into any shrooms you would walk into. Build swifties and Phage first if you are even or ahead to kill him.

VS

Trundle

Medium

Poke him at early levels (1-4) and try to get kills or get ahead from there. At 6 he can duel you pretty easily. You might have to roam. His ult ignores a lot of your tank items while making him tankier, so if you are behind this is a hard match up. Even if you are 8/0, there will be a point in the game where he can duel you and win. The main objective is to not let him get to that point. Get wardens to slow his attack speed if you need it. Try not to fight on his W and not to take too many bites. Becareful of his E pillar if you try to dive him.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Q Q Q Q Q Q Q, spam this on him at early levels. He Es to you? Auto w run away and q. You can use your ult early on him if you want, but you probably wont even need it against him. He is easy to kite. Freeze the lane and any time he comes for a minion you Q him. He is usually squishy too, so he is almost always a free first blood. If you are behind get randuins. Very easy match up. Even when behind you can freely kill him. Don't save your ult if you need to use it. Ignite will more than likely kill him if you time it in the middle of his ult. If you ult him there is a chance he will mistime his ult and you get the kill for free.

VS

Udyr

Easy

Kite him. If he comes to stun you, then turn around and right before he is about to stun you W him and he will do maybe one auto to you while you are stunned. You can out damage him greatly. You can freeze the lane to deny him exp if you are ahead. If he is ahead then build tanky (randuins if he is going tiger, banshees if he is pheonix). At 6, just grab him, w when he tries to stun you, auto q auto as many times as u need, q if you can again, ult and ignite if you even need it. Very easy match up if you know what you are doing. Just don't leave him too many minions as if he maxes turtle he can sustain way more than you can do damage, and you will run out of mana trying to kill him to which he can turn on you and kill you.

VS

Vayne

Medium

Rush swifties, wardens, and phage (unless she is getting grabbed a lot then just get sheen swifties then finish trinity). If you are ahead she is a free ticket to getting fed. If you are behind make sure not to feed her or else you will have to adcs to worry about late game. Try to bait out her E and definitely stay away from walls as she can kill you easily if you are stunned. Exhaust and ignite are both good ideas (exhaust especially). Once you are 6 make sure to grab her and kill her while staying away from walls. Don't let her juke you (get some pinks and put them down while she is invisible if you think she will juke you). If she is alone then her low range will equal a lot of grabs and kills for you (hide in bushes too then go at her). With a support this match up can be very hard.

VS

Vi

Easy

Dodge her Q and hit her with your Q. Buffer up W if you are going to be hit with her Q. You can also flash out of it too. She is very squishy if she rushes trinity, but she can still deal some damage. Without her Q she will deal almost none. Get exhaust if you are not confident in dodging her Q, and ignite if you are. At 6 she can probably kill you if you are low, but you can kill her very easily even if shes at full. If she builds tank she will have no damage so just spam q. Fairly easy match up.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

This is a hard match up if you are new to Darius. At level 1 and 2, try to Q him as much as possible. Get Apprehend at 2 if you can kill him with it. If he pools while you are mid W you will glitch out and freeze for a few seconds so be aware of that. Hide in bushes and try to lower him as much as possible. With swifties you might be able to run up to him. If he is scared he will pool, in that case wait until it is over, then grab him and kill him. If he is ahead his ult can do a lot of damage to you but if he is behind then it doesn't do as much to you alone. Early on (before level 9ish) he will have a very hard time farming under tower so push to his tower and ward up. Buy MR and swifties. Swifties to catch up and MR so you don't take too much poke. It is very possible to kill him once you are at 6. This match up takes quite a bit of practice to get good at, and a good Vlad will ruin your day.

VS

Volibear

Easy

Bait out his Q as much as possible. At the end of it you can Q him at max range. If you know he will flip you then start your w right before you are stunned from the flip. Botrk is a good idea in this match up. Kite him around so he doesn't auto you as much which means he can't bite you. Be aware of his passive as that makes it hard to kill him, but if you ult just right you can kill him. Once you have 5 stacks on him he will probably run, and if he doesn't you will almost always have a free kill on him.

VS

Warwick

Medium

Can be a tough match up. Q him as much as possible (he can Q you if you are in range to Q him). At 6 he can probably kill you with his ult. Try to build some MR and Armor depending on how he builds. Sheen really helps with this match up if he tries to auto you, as your W can do a lot more damage. Do not let him get ahead and you are perfectly fine. If he builds pure tank then you should try to get some tank before you finish trinity as you be a free kill to him at 6.

VS

Wukong

Easy

Very easy. He tries to E to you? Auto w (auto again now if you can). You can then walk to his clone and q, it will probably hit him as he wont be that far away from it because he is slowed. Be careful for his ult. He can still do some damage to you so if he is almost killing you get wardens. Watch for ganks as his knock up is almost a guaranteed kill.

VS

Xin Zhao

Easy

Stay away once his Q and E are up. If only his E is off cooldown, then you can freely attack him. If his Q is only up, then Q him from a distance but don't take any hits (could also stand back until it does go on cool down, then attack him). If both are up, then still harass him but be ready to W him and walk away as his Q autos do a lot of damage early on. Never pull him immediately as he can Q W auto then catch up to you with E when you try to flash away. Make sure he hits you before he ults or you will be knocked back. You could also just flash back to where you were then e him. If you are behind or are scared he will kill you then rush randuins and just farm because at around level 9 there will be a point where you can kill him easily while he can't kill you. Just don't feed him or this lane will become very hard. If he Es you then auto W and walk away.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Dodge his Q while spamming your Q. If he comes near you auto W auto. Free kill once you are 6. If you have taken too much poke through Qs make sure his tornado missed or you are dead. As long as his Qs miss he could be 6/0 and you could still kill him in seconds. Careful for him ulting to his tornado as that could mean you are getting ganked.

VS

Yorick

Medium

Spam Q, pull auto w auto auto auto q ult ignite free kill at 6. If he throws out a ghoul at you hide in the bush and the ghoul will stop attacking you. You can hide in a bush, walk to him while still in the bush, q, then run away from some free poke. Get some armor if you are behind. Push lane so he is farming at tower (he runs out of mana fast) but becareful for ganks. You also might not be able to kill him this way. If you are ahead keep killing him as a behind Yorick is just free food. Against people who can't play Yorick properly, this is a very easy match up. People who can use Yorick properly make this match up a nightmare. You will need a gank or a misplay from Yorick to get ahead, or else it will be a very tough lane for you.

VS

Zed

Medium

Difficult match up. Armor really helps in this match up. Early on he will do a lot of damage to you. Dodge his Q and try not to let him auto you. Q him from a distance and if he comes to close auto w auto (you might be able to kill him if he traded spots with his shadow to get to you). Once your ahead it's an easy lane. Just make sure to get some armor no matter what. He can ult while you are ulting him, so be aware of that. Might be worth it to flash away right after he becomes targetable again.

VS

Ziggs

Easy

One pull and he's dead. This is rare in top lane. Dodge his skill shots, rush mr if you need it. Once you are 6 you have a free kill (you probably wont even need flash if you can grab him).

Beginner Techniques Back to Top

These are really basic beginner techniques to Darius. Only read these if you are completely new to Darius. They are really obvious.

Your W resets your auto attack animation, meaning that once you auto and you are waiting for your next auto, and time before your first and your 2nd auto can be reset by pressing w.

The outer part of your Q deals more damage (66% more) than the inside (inside doesn't apply bleed either) so try to space it when you can, but don't walk away from them all the time unless you know you will stay in range. You get used to it very quickly.
decimate_zpse0813f32.png

Your ult resets on kill, and at rank 1 and 2 there is a 20 second window to recast it. At rank 3, thanks to new buffs, it is permanently reset meaning that you have an infinite window to recast it after you kill them with it. It also costs no mana thanks to the rework.

Advanced Techniques and Tips Back to Top

These are some of the lesser known techniques that are a little harder to do but not that hard once you get the hang of it. I do these things without even realizing it, and you will too the more you play Darius.

The first thing I'll start with is your auto attack. For Darius's auto attack, he swings his axe at the minion. The actual damage though occurs before the axe hits the target. It's extremely hard to explain and I will try my best to find an image, but basically if you cancel your auto before the axe hits the target, it will still do damage despite not touching the target, meaning you can use an ability out of it quicker. This speeds up the process of applying bleed stacks.

The second thing is with Apprehend. For the record, I'm not talking about this glitch;
ps this has been patched out for a very long time

With Darius's apprehend, he grabs whatever is in front of him, including minions and monsters. The only things he can not grab are Dragon, Baron, or structures. However, even if a tiny bit of the enemies arm or leg is in grab range, then they will be pulled towards Darius. I found this image on Google to help explain;E.jpg
As you can see, the minion is barely even in the hit box, yet Darius will still grab it. This is the most helpful Darius tip I can give as you will be using the 100% of the time on enemy adcs. It is way less lenient than before the rework now.

RE: 2nd tip - ever since the rework, it seems the range on apprehend has been reduced. Darius grabbing at the very end is no longer the case. It's hard to explain just where he grabs, but it's definitely not the same range as before.

3rd is don't be afraid to ult and kill steal in team fights since it will put you in blood rage. This is only for the first kill though. Once you have blood rage try to Q in a team fight to hit everyone with the blade and apply 5 stacks of bleed to everyone.

4th one is: if you begin your ult animation, but they flash away, your ult will still go through, no matter how far away they are.

5th one - barely anyone ever does this, despite it being common sense. You can flash, then hook people. Yeah. Crazy. Even in Platinum, Darius's don't think to do this. It confuses me a lot. Flash hook is almost a guaranteed kill. Especially if you grab this on the enemy ADC.

6th is a phage tip. That extra move speed can greatly help you. You can use it once you buy it to trick the enemy top laner into not thinking you are fast enough to catch them. Kill a minion, run up to them, grab them, and kill them. Also helps when you are running away. Throw out a Q near a low hp minion and you gain a free 60 move speed. Very useful item.

7th is to save Randuins slow until after your W has worn off. It's like a free second W. If you put enough stacks on them (I usually q - auto - w (the more bleed stacks they have the lower the cd of w)) then the cd will be low enough so that you can W, randuins, then w again while still doing more damage with autos, q, ult, and ignite. Late game your team will help with that so it's a guaranteed kill. Many free picks are made with this.

8th tip is that if you are ahead by a lot and your team is very far behind (which will happen a lot, even in ranked) please do not be afraid to give your team kills. What I'm talking about is if you see their adc out of position and their team is far away, but you are all grouped. Don't waste your ult on that adc when your team can benefit from that kill way more than you can. If you get too far ahead of your team and you own all your teams gold then the enemy team will focus you. Once you are dead then you guys will definitely lose the team fight. It is important to spread gold out evenly throughout your team. Even if that means giving up a wave of minions to your adc if he needs it. Remember, League is a team game.

9th is to roam. If you get tower early, buy swifties and roam. Run up to bottom, and you will be so fast that you can run up and grab them. If dragons up and you killed their bot lane, then you just earned a free dragon for your team. Only do this if you have taken tower, you have teleport, or their top laner is playing someone that won't become a hyper carry with farm (like Nasus, Irelia, - even Cho can be pretty scary). Just be careful if you do this without teleport as you could let the enemy top laner catch up if he has too much farm. If your own bot lane is ahead then it is not worth it to roam there. Try mid, and if they are fine then keep zoning out the enemy top laner. If you are behind to the point where the enemy top laner can dive you and kill you no problem, then it might be worth it to roam and look for kills while giving up your tower. Watch out for if they have tp though.

10th is that your dunk doesn't have to be the final blow that gives the reset. There is about a 1 second window right after you ult that if you kill them in that time your ult will reset.

Your goal as Darius Back to Top

Laning - Deny Deny Deny. You don't want them to have any minions. The second you see them coming up for a minion, you Q them. For ranged champs, you try to hide in bushes, walk up to them and Q them. Ranged champions are usually squishy though so if they are low enough you can walk up to them, grab them and kill them. Don't spam your abilities. Save your Q for only when you think you can hit them with the outer part of your Q, or if you will miss 3+ minions if you do not Q. You will run out of mana and die early on if you spam your abilities. It is much harder to run out of mana if you spam Q now, as it costs 10 less mana per cost (from 40 mana to 30 mana). Ward your lane as Darius is a free kill, even if you have flash. Against a Pantheon jungle, you better ward up a lot. Pantheons usually camp you, and it is extremely hard to recover from being behind so far. I've had games where Pantheons wait inside bushes and kill you the second you come back to lane. In cases like that, roam or just stay under tower and wait. There will be an opportunity for you to catch back up in team fights. Buy swifties and roam (really hard to roam without swifties as you will be very slow, even without trinity is hard) if you take their tower and they will freeze the lane (and you won't let them become a beast (cough irelia cough) with farm)). Also if you are too far behind and you will die if you stay in lane then it can be worth it to trade your tower to roam. Watch out for if they have teleport. I count laning phase as the second a tower is taken. This is usually around 15-20 mins. A very useful tip is to TP to bot lane when your jungler is near, or their jungler is near top lane. When this happens you can take dragon as their jungler won't be there to stop you guys. Just make sure your bot can do it (not extremely low on hp, not behind when their bot lane is really far ahead, your jungle is near if you guys need him). I use this trick a lot in ranked games. Also upgrade trinket immediately if you are being camped or have 250 extra gold or want to invade the enemies jungle to the green ward trinket. Wards save lives.

Mid Game - Roam. That's it. Just keep roaming and group with your team. The only thing you can do is look for picks with your apprehend. If you are behind this is your chance to catch up. It is okay to steal some kills if you desperately need them (think 1/6 or something like that). It is really easy to go from 0/6 to 10/6, just try not to take too many kills as you could put your adc or mid laner behind. In lower elos your team will get mad at you as well. By the end of mid game (around 20-30 min depending on the game). This is the shortest phase of the game, and you won't really notice it go by as much as you don't really do much different as you would if it was late game. Head to top sometimes to clear waves or take tower if you haven't yet.

Late Game - Darius does not fall off here... at all. Despite what people think, your pull will never fall off. You have a slow as well. Darius becomes more team orientated here if anything. With your core you will become a team fighting god, that specializes in team fights and skirmishes with multiple enemies to hit. If you build correctly with Darius you will be near the top of the damage dealt to champions chart while still topping the damage taken chart. If your team is in position and the enemy carry is not, then it can be worth it to grab them. Pay attention to the situation though, as if your team is all grouped up and their team is amumu, annie, wukong, etc, then you just lost your team the fight. It is all about judging the situation. One important late game tip is to NEVER go bottom lane to clear minions if Baron is up. NEVER. If the enemy sees you bot they can easily rush baron. Unless you have TP, this is never a good idea, unless if their adc is all alone (then you kill her and tp to baron, if you don't have tp then just do baron). If that is the case then just do baron yourselves. When pushing, there is always 2 options - Baron or inhibitor. If baron is down I prefer to push bottom lane. If you can take bottom lane inhibitor then you can take baron when it's up as long as they are clearing it. If they are not clearing then try to stall at baron as the minions will stack in their base. When that happens try to keep them there or just do baron. You can win the game at this point as they will be low on hp or mana if they are behind while trying to clear the minions. Bottom inhibitor > all others. If your entire team is pushing bot though while baron is up they will just do baron. Keep an eye out for the baron timer. If you do not have it then just be safe and push mid. You should almost always have a rough idea of when it was taken. Always keep an eye on dragons as well. 5th dragon doesn't mean GG, but it does make it very hard for the opposing team to win.

About me / Tips for climbing the ladder Back to Top

Hey guys, my name is Snorkal. I am a diamond Darius main.

Recently, I have powered through to Diamond (I have not been playing league nearly as much as I used to). I have been thinking about making a Darius guide for a while, and now that I'm diamond I thought "why not?". I've been playing Darius since early season 3, as I didn't have enough IP to buy him when he came out. Here are my ranked Darius stats since season 3;

As you can see, I have been very successful with Darius in ranked. I have climbed from Gold to Diamond with Darius. I am currently ranked as one of the top 200 best Darius in the world. 25th best in NA. http://www.lolskill.net/summoner/NA/Snorkal/summary
He is a great champ that is easy to pick up.

Occasionally, I stream at http://www.twitch.tv/Snorkal
Feel free to drop in while I'm streaming or follow for a heads up on when I'm streaming. I answer every question that is thrown my way in chat.

My youtube that is filled with Darius plays and games is at
https://www.youtube.com/user/SniperzForLife/featured

I have been playing since season 1, but I was a raging 600 elo Master Yi main. I played him every role (even support), and I used to think it was my teams fault for us losing and not mine. Once I started realizing that it really wasn't their fault and that I am to blame for 95% of my losses, I quickly started climbing the ladder. I started paying attention to how I died, why I died, and how to avoid that. It sounds very cheesy at first, but over time you will notice that you can prevent a majority of your deaths by playing smart and looking back on what you did. That's the most basic tip I can give you. The next is to find the champ you have the most fun playing, then keep playing that champ (same with your role). I tried out all the roles many times, and I always go back to top lane. I never really get bored of it. I think I got bored of it once in my 4 years of playing, but I took a break from league as a whole then. Make sure you are having fun is what I'm trying to say. If you are not, you will be negative and then probably be salty and rage. No one wants that. No one wins games by typing "?" after someone on their team messes up. Just ignore it and move on. Taking advice from your team is also helpful. Sometimes when your mind is clouded with frustration because you lost lane or you are being camped, you aren't thinking clearly. Your teammates usually are though, so sometimes it is worth it to take their advice (think about it first - the advice you get in Silver and Bronze probably isn't the best). If they tell you to kill yourself though then just report them and don't actually kill yourself as that's a bad thing to do. My next tip is not to play ranked matches like they are LCS matches. Following the LCS is not a religion. You can play differently then the way they do and still win games. Obviously it's good to take a tip here and there, but listening to their advice obviously won't turn you into a god at League of Legends. If someone else on your team wants top lane but you called it first, bite your tongue and let them have it. They could be a riven only player and go 20/0. They could also never have been played riven and go 0/20. It doesn't matter, as either way they are your teammate. As long as your team is happy, then you guys will communicate better and probably win. If they do start doing bad, again don't type "?" as that is the most annoying thing ever. My next tip is something I myself have trouble following. If you just had a bad game, then take a break. Read a book, do homework, have a nap, go to the gym, make yourself food, anything. Just do something to clear your mind. If you are mid game and your team is yelling at you then mute them if you can't handle it. If league gets you stressed to the point you want to stab your eyes out then why are you playing? Find a game you enjoy playing that doesn't make you as stressed. Never expect or rely on ganks to win your lane. If the enemy gets ganks and you do, then so what? Live with it. This just means that he is applying more pressure to your lane instead of jungling or attacking other lanes. Tell your jungler to camp another lane if this happens. My biggest tip is pay attention to minions. If you are in top lane for example, and the enemy has a wave of 15 minions and you are trying to 1v1 someone while standing in the middle of those minions, not only will creep block ruin you but the damage of those minions + the enemy top laner will kill you very quick. Especially early on.

There might be some more tips that I have missed, and I will edit in any more that I think of. Feel free to suggest some in the comments.

Darius thoughts since rework Back to Top

Darius lost almost all of his early game to become a team fighting god, but only if he can get 5 bleed stacks. Darius scales extremely hard, but he needs to be with his team. He has a really hard time splitting alone as he can't duel on a level even remotely close to what the old Darius could. Darius is also more immobile due to not gaining speed per champion bleeding. Darius lost a lot for a new passive, in addition with his old. I wouldn't call it a nerf, but I wouldn't call it that much of a buff. It's a shift in power. Darius is a very different champ now that needs his team to win instead of killing everything on his own, with his team occasionally helping. It's really hard to deal with his attack speed slow being removed, as he really sucks at dueling now, which the old Darius was just so good at. The Q delay is weird at first but you get used to it. It can't be used in between autos anymore which really hurts Darius's damage.

Darius was complete garbage before the hotfix. After it hes pretty strong, I can see why people ban him. He's not OP, hes just really strong (borderline op). He's still easily kitable, but the heal is just way too strong. The buff on his W in 5.17 is nothing really. I use W to help me last hit all the time and I've never been oom or felt like I wasted my W. Probably the most minor buff to a champion in a very long time. I promise, unless you make a point to look out for it, you won't even notice it.

PLAYS WITH NEW DARIUS
https://www.youtube.com/user/SniperzForLife/featured
I upload any plays that I think are pretty good. All of these are against Diamond 5 / Diamond 4 players.

The nerfs hurt his 2v1 pressure, but buffed his team fighting. You are probably not going to land a spin on 3 people though, so it is definitely a nerf. The mana cost made it so he can actually run oom pretty easily if you spam spin on every wave. I think he is fairly balanced, although he still is a tiny bit too strong. There is not much they can nerf about him without making him weak now though, and the only thing I can think of is still the Q cd. Besides his Q cd, he is balanced.

5.22 OPINION OF DARIUS

Darius has received quite a bit of nerfs, and they have been justified. Darius is in an okay state now, mostly because of the q blade width nerf (it's a really annoying nerf). Darius was OP though so I can understand it. As of 5.22 Darius is still the most banned champ which doesn't make sense to me since he's really not that great anymore. I will continue to play him as Darius is my favourite champion and it's not like he is trash. I have updated the guide with masteries, and I will try to update summoners and items. For summoners I still feel like teleport is mandatory as the global pressure is just so much more useful than ignite. For items I have been trying to get Trinity Force in replace of Black Cleaver, as how I played Darius pre rework. It's looking promising, as it gives Darius more burst but less damage vs tanks. Your split pushing power also increases by a decent amount. With ADCs being really strong this patch the burst helps you kill them and the movement speed helps you catch up to them. I need more testing with Youmuu's and Death's Dance (could be really good as a last damage item instead of titanic hydra). I will keep this guide updated as I try out more builds.
