Summoner Spells Back to Top

I would generally always take Flash, as Darius doesn't have any sort of escape aside form killing whoever is attacking you. It can also allow you to take a low health enemy by surprise by winding up Q and then flashing into them. Teleport is as useful as it would be for any top laner, providing a strong map presence while being more or less seperated from the rest of your team. Ghost is a nice addition too, and makes it much easier to snowball early/mid game. It also works well with Phase Rush. Personally, I lean towards ghost, mainly because Darius' teleport ganks aren't as good as most other top laners. Ignite is redundant, your passive is basically a scaling ignite, I don't reccomend it, but take it if first blood is absolutely necessary to you.

New Runes Back to Top

In my opinion, this is a pretty solid Darius page. The sustain and tankiness from the Resolve tree is very helpful, and while you won't be doing quite as much damage as before early, you can simply continuously poke the enemy laner with grasp and Q. Celerity is fairly helpful, as it helps you from being kited, and also gives a little extra damage. Gathering storm is a personal preference, and can be replaced with something else (Transcendence.png?width=32). Additionally, Aftershock Aftershock.png?width=32 is preferable in lanes where you won't proc Grasp very much. The alternate page is for less risky matchups, and is best when taken with ghost. The footwork page is my personal favorite, but it takes some getting used to. It works especially well against kite lanes such as Gangplank or Jayce. Finally, spellbook/klepto is an option simply for utility. I don't nessicarily recconmend it, but it fits into the playstyle of some.

*NOTE*
Taking Conqueror instead of footwork while keeping the same page is an option too. However, keep in mind that conqueror is much, much better with the triforce/sterak's build than the cleaver one.

Nothing special. Max Q, then E. W max over E is possible, but you should play a couple games with it before you try it. E gives less cd and armor pen, while W only lowers it's cd.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

I like Doran's Sword better, but sheild can be useful too. If you really want to prove your dominance, longsword and 3 pots is possible.

Core Items

Black cleaver should pretty much always be your first item. It gives everything darius needs to do well, and is fairly cheap. The passive stacks with your bleed, too.
If you're losing really hard, randuin's or spirit visage can be a good first item instead of cleaver.
This is what my final build often looks like.
    Against full ad
Against mostly AP. You can swap GA for a Zz'Rot if you use it.
Hydra can occasionally work, but is often not optimal. The faster 5 stack is good, but other items simply are better to have imo.
Big burst combo. I will discuss this later on.

Situational Items

All are possible last items. Death's Dance is good if you're ahead. Youmuu's is good if you're REALLY ahead, and take Thornmail if they're all AD.
More possible last items. I go sterak's or Zz'Rot 85% of the time for my last item.
These are all possible offensive items for if you're ahead. PD and BOTRK seem weird but actually work really well. Trinity Force is very strong with the bonus base ad from Sterak's, so if you build it instead of cleaver, Sterak's is a must.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Just kill him. Super easy lane. Cancel his jump with your pull to make him cry.

VS

Akali

Easy

Clap him lmao, new Akali is not a good top laner since they removed the armor/mr from her W.

VS

Camille

Medium

Interesting lane, be careful of her potential to trade very quickly due to her e and the movespeed granted by q, and the damage negation from her passive. Try to go in on her when the passive is down, and remember, when she ults, she's stuck with you. You'll always outdo her in longer trades.

VS

Darius

Hard

Simply a skill matchup. You won't get this in ranked. Just pull when he Q's  to get yourself in the inner range.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Ignite is a good choice in this matchup until you're confident of your damage. Just dodge his Q and poke him with q when you have minions.

VS

Ekko

Medium

Don't let him poke you down with Q-E combo. Try to force trades. Ekko's strength lies in his ability to quickly move to and away from you, and your pull can stop that. Save it to re-engage on him.

VS

Fiora

Hard

A good Fiora can ruin your day BUT It's always possible to outplay her. Her Q has a short cooldown, but it does have one, so only use your Q right after she's used hers, or else she'll just dodge it. If you can bait out her W, go hard. If you get 1-2 kills, you don't really need your ultimate to kill her, so the Riposte shouldn't be a problem. When she ults, stand next to a wall so she can't proc the vital.

VS

Galio

Easy

He can be hard to kill, but not really a threat. Be very wary of jungle ganks, as he can hold you in place for a pretty long time.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

A good gangplank will simply poke you down with barrels. Try to stand next to them and auto them before his q can reach. Many unexperienced gps will try to cleanse your pull with oranges, which doesn't work. Try to save your W for after he uses his, so the slow can't be cleansed. Be as aggressive as you can.

VS

Garen

Medium

Demacian version of you. Easy money. His silence auto has a short delay where he jumps into the air, so W right as he starts the animation. Try to keep at least 1 stack of your bleed on him at all times, it'll negate his passive. Your ult outclasses his until you are the villian, so use it when you need to. Try to stay above 30% hp at lvl 6.

VS

Gnar

Hard

Gnar can be tricky for a newer Darius player. He can kite you super easily, as he has lots of slows and speed ups. If you can cancel his hop with your E, you can probably kill him. Force a fight when he goes mega.

VS

Gragas

Easy

Make them ask why they picked gragas top. Easy easy lane, just dodge his q and you're fine. It does more damage the longer he lets it sit, so just take the instant burst. if he E's you he has no escape, you can chunk him down.

VS

Graves

Medium

Short range. Try to W him as he dashes away, so you can catch up. He's not

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

If you're against a Heim, i'm sorry. Get a Doran's shield, and try to kill his turrets as quickly as possible before he gets a lot out. He is a niche pick, and is really squishy until he gets Zz'rot. Poke with Q where you can, and let him push the wave to your tower.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Annoying. You and her are champs who fill very similar roles, both with lots of multiple target damage and %HP healing. Can be tough to beat if you are inexperienced fighting Illaois. Dodge her Q and E, and try to poke her down before she can poke you. Hit lvl 2 before she does and go ham.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

A lane bully top laner, but less of a lane bully than you. Very easy lane. If he pokes you with q or e he has no escape, and you can go in hard.

VS

Jax

Easy

Interesting lane. Whoever gets the first kill wins lane, pretty much. Easy early game, lock him out of farm and don't let it get to late. He can usually win a 1v1 no matter what in the late game.

VS

Jayce

Hard

The bane of many Darius players. Try to poke with Q any time he autos, they have the same range. When you pull him, auto/W reset while he's locked out of casting, and don't waste mana on Q as he will immediately knock you away. He loses an actual fight, so if you can bait out his E, go ham.

VS

Kayle

Hard

She will just poke with E and Q. Use your pull when her E runs out, as she will come closer to farm. Don't ult unless she doesn't have vision of you or you know hers is down. When she ults, sustain yourself with Q and kite as best you can, then go ham. She doesn't get bleed stacks when she ults, so don't try autoing. You can pull her right before it ends to make sure she dies.

VS

Kennen

Hard

Ugh. Just dodge his Q and when you see his 4th auto light up from W, walk away so he's forced to waste it to farm. His ult is annoying, try not to get caught in it. He's really squishy in earlier levels, so if you see an opening, take it.

VS

Kled

Medium

DON'T ULT HIM AT ALL WHEN HE'S ON HIS LIZARD! Otherwise, be careful of his big boy 4th %HP auto from W, and dodge his Q. Poke him down and bait out his E. When he's off his lizard, he has no movespeed, but he can kite your Q with his, so be aware of that.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

Just pull when she uses her E so she can't reactivate it. Use Q to poke her down.

VS

Malphite

Easy

Just kill him. Your E gives a ton of armor pen, so he can't do much in the later levels. Your passive makes sure his is never up. If you can dodge/ predict his ult, he's a pushover. He can slow you a huge amount though, so early boots can work wonders.

VS

Maokai

Easy

He has no escape. He takes much less damage when he's in his R, and he can W to dodge your Q. Make sure he can't do short trades. Force him to stay with E and W when he's used his abilities.

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

His passive blocks your ult. Be careful, don't underestimate his damage, and trade when his abilities are down.

VS

Nasus

Easy

Don't let him farm. Save your W for when he withers you, as it will drastically reduce your attack speed. Generally an easy matchup, but don't underestimate a good Nasus.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

He can't trade with you as long as you don't waste abilities. Tank him when he goes in, and auto him without using abilities until he walks away, then pull, a>w>q> to get max damage. Can be annoying late game or if he gets ahead, but it's hard for him to kill you because of his lack of damage.

VS

Nunu

Medium

Weird lane. Save your E to cancel his ult, or else he'll fully charge it. Try to not let him kite you too hard.

VS

Olaf

Easy

Be very careful of his early damage. Starting with Q and poking him as much as possible works well.

VS

Ornn

Medium

Not too hard to play this lane but he does do a surprising amount of damage, but if you can juke his W, you should be able to kill him. Walk to the side and auto him to get stacks until his sheild runs out, then go for more damage with W and Q.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. One of the most annoying matchups. His q outranges yours by a lot, so don't waste mana on him. If he comes too close, try to do some damage to him without using your e, so if he stuns you, you can pull him back afterwards. Your passive still stacks through his shield, but your W will not damage through it, so be careful.

VS

Poppy

Easy

Just kill her. She can't farm, and can't trade with you. Go for her shield drop if she goes for it, bad poppy players will often try to get it no matter what.

VS

Quinn

Hard

Very annoying. If you can w her, she will jump away, and will be slowed so you can pull her. Play around her E. If she wastes it, you can kill her very easily. If you don't think you're up for it, just stay back and play safe.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Can be hard or easy. Kind of a skill matchup. A very good renekton player will E into you, immediately W-Q, and E out before the stun wears off, repeating this combo over and over. If he does this, the only thing you can do is try to w him before he stuns you, making it hard for him to get away after dashing out. If he has no spells, he does nothing.

VS

Riven

Hard

A bad Riven is one of the easiest lanes you will have. However, a good Riven is an absolute nightmare to play against. If you outplay her, she dies, but otherwise, it's very hard to trade with her, as she will usually have some way to get out. Try to fight when she thinks she can kill you and goes in with E or Q. You can use your E to cancel her third Q. Many Riven players won't expect this, and you will be able to do a good chunk of damage if you do this.

VS

Rumble

Medium

He does a lot of damage if he gets ahead. Try to kill him early to snowball. He can kite you fairly easily with the slows on his E and R, so try not to let them hit. However, if you pul him, he really doesn't have an escape, so expect a flash if you get him close to dying.

VS

Ryze

Easy

Who plays Ryze top? His W and E have the same range, which is about the same as your pull, and he has no escape. If he ults, e him right as the warp ends to stop him from going.

VS

Shen

Medium

Good Shen players know how to trade with you so that they take 0 damage and you take a lot. Try to bait out his W, and if he uses E to go in on you, force a trade after he starts walking away. Try to call out mia as much as you can, and keep track of his TP and R cooldowns.

VS

Singed

Medium

Don't chase him! Just trade with him when he goes in on you, and W right as he reaches you, as he will usually flip you immediately. If he's slowed after the flip, you're pretty much guaranteed to pull him. Otherwise, just play like he doesn't exist, and he won't really do too much. You can walk your first minion wave in from the base to discourage an early proxy.

VS

Sion

Easy

You outdo him in every way. E cancels his Q. He doesn't do much dmg without it. Not much to say.

VS

Tahm Kench

Hard

If the Tahm knows what he's doing, rest your soul. He can disengage when you fight and still win the trade. All you can do is stay by your minions and not try to straight up trade him until he's very low. Just poke with Q and if he goes in on you, you can probably kill him, or at least force a back.

VS

Teemo

Medium

Annoying. He will try to poke you a lot, so pull him when he gets close enough, and immediately auto W to proc phase rush. Run in front of him when he blinds you, and use Q before it ends. Easy trade, he has no escape if he gets pulled. If you don't think you can, stand far enough back and farm with Q so that if he does come to poke, he takes minion aggro.

VS

Trundle

Hard

A big counter. He will want to Q you as much as possible, so kite him as best you can, using Q ( dariuscleave.png )before he attacks you to get the full damage. When he ults, run. Use E and W to slow him, and take as little damage as you can. When it runs out, you can turn on him if he's not too ahead.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Early crits hurt a lot, so make him auto you as little as possible. Take Phase rush, E> AA> W> Q then back off. Repeat until he's low. Using your Ult to force his is a worthwhile trade, as he will not be able to get you low enough to stay in lane afterwards.

VS

Urgot

Medium

Pretty similar champ to you. As long as you don't get hit by his E, you should be fine. Your Q poke is better than him autoing, so you can eventually wear him down and force him out of lane.

VS

Vayne

Hard

If you somehow get to her through her E and flash, she dies, but good luck trying to pull her. Your best bet is to let her push up and wait for your jungler. If you have to fight, wait until she uses Q, then pull and immediately auto-w to proc phase rush so you can catch up after she condemns you.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

His range is about the same as yours, but you do more damage. He can heal back most of the damage you deal eventually, so if you can kill him or force him to back in one trade, do it. Additionally, you can wait until he walks up to Q a minion to use your Q, and it is almost a guaranteed hit.

VS

Wukong

Medium

Easy to get outplayed by him, his E can dodge your outer Q, and his R can help him to get out of it as well. His trades are very short, but hurt a lot. However, your Q counts his W clone as an extra champ, and doubles your heal, and you can easily force him to stay after he engages with your slows.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Wait until he uses E on you before you Q, as he can dodge by dashing through you. He wins a duel lvl 1, but after that, if he tries to fight, you win hands down.

VS

Yorick

Hard

If you get hit by E yoricke.png, you will probably go below half health. His Wyorickw.png is a pretty much guaranteed E yoricke.pnghit, so try to avoid that too. Only fight him once he uses it, or if he has no ghouls. Be careful about that, though, because his Ryorickr.png  summons 4 new ones. It's better to farm and outscale him than to fight him head on. That being said, you can kill him, it's just not easy.
