Summoner Spells Back to Top

Summoner Spells

red_line.png

4.png Flash is the first Summoner Spell and I recommend always taking it when you're playing this champion. This is because Flash is the best Summoner Spell around. It is a really good and reliable Summoner Spell. It can be used offensively, defensively and is honestly, a really good Spell to take.

12.png Teleport is the second Summoner Spell that you should take on Darius. This Spell is really good because it can be used to get back to lane quicker and it can also be used to help your team. In the early game, you want to teleport back to lane after your first back. Then you should look for Teleport opportunities where you can help your team.

New Runes Back to Top

Runes

red_line.png

122.png Darius has a range of different Runes that he can take. For this guide, I recommend taking a basic Resolve Rune page. This page is good as it gives him the sustain and defensive stats that 122.png Darius needs to survive the laning phase. The first Rune and main is Grasp%20of%20the%20Undying.png?width=32Grasp of The Undying. This Rune is good as it gives him 7.png healing and extra damage when he autos enemies. This Rune can also be proc'd quite easily because you are a melee champion. If you're against a ranged champion it may be harder. The second Rune I recommend that you take is Demolish.png?width=32 Demolish. This Rune will make you a threat when you are split-pushing and trying to take towers. This will allow you to take them quickly. Your next Rune should be Iron%20Skin.png?width=32 Iron Skin. This Rune will give you armour and will protect you against champions and auto attacks. Alternatively, if you're against an AP champion such as 50.png Swain then you can take Mirror%20Shell.png?width=32 Mirror Shell. For your final Rune in your main tree, I recommend that you take Overgrowth.png?width=32 Overgrowth. This Rune will allow you to get stronger and tankier throughout the game.

red_line.png

Like the main tree, 122.png Darius has even more freedom with his secondary tree! I recommend taking Sorcery as your next tree. This is because it gives you more sustain and slightly more damage in trades. I like to take Manaflow%20Band.png?width=32 ManaflowBond on Darius as it gives you increased mana regeneration and will periodically give you a free ability to use if you have the mana. The next and final Rune is going to be Scorch.png?width=32 Scorch. This is a really good Rune because it deals extra damage to enemies. It will also help you with trades like Grasp%20of%20the%20Undying.png?width=32 Grasp of the Undying and it will make trades easier, especially with 122.png Darius's kit being so obnoxious.

Abilities

red_line.png

Darius's Passive is Hemorrhage

His basic attacks and abilities cause enemies to bleed for 5 seconds. Bleed can stack up to 5 times from different abilities or auto attacks hit.Upon applying 5 stacks on the enemy champion or killing them with dariusexecute.png Noxian Guillotine, 122.png  Darius will gain dariuspassive.png Noxian Might for 5 seconds.

dariuspassive.png Noxian Might dot-pattern.png 122.png Darius will gain bonus attack damage and instantly apply 5 stacks to enemies hit.Screenshot_1.png

red_line.png

Darius's Q is Decimate

After a brief delay 122.png Darius swings his axe around him dealing damage to all enemies. If an enemy is within the shaft range of the axe, they will be dealt reduced damage. He will 7.png heal from using his dariuscleave.png Q, however, he won't 7.png heal from it if they are hit by the shaft of it, neither will it apply dariuspassive.png  Hemorrhage.

dot-pattern.png Tips and Tricks dot-pattern.png

Whenever you use your dariuscleave.png Q, you need to walk into range of the enemy. You want to hit them with the outer ring of your ability and not the shaft of it- there is an indicator. Your dariuscleave.png Q will also 7.png heal you, so use it in lane if you need to 7.png heal.

Your dariuscleave.png Q will apply dariuspassive.png Hemorrhage if you hit the enemy with the outer ring of your dariuscleave.png Q.Screenshot_2.png

red_line.png

Darius's W is Crippling Strike

122.png Darius's next basic attack within 4 seconds deals 40% bonus damage and slows the enemy for 1 second. If he kills the target then the cost of dariusnoxiantacticsonh.png Crippling Strike will be refunded and the cooldown halved.

dot-pattern.png Tips and Tricks dot-pattern.png

Your dariusnoxiantacticsonh.png W is an auto attack reset which means you should auto the enemy first and then press dariusnoxiantacticsonh.png W to get a free auto. This will be the best way of dealing damages in trades. In some cases, you can use your dariusnoxiantacticsonh.png Crippling Strike to last hit minions if they are under your tower. For example, if there are 2 minions low on health, you can auto one and use your dariusnoxiantacticsonh.png W on the other.

Screenshot_3.png

red_line.png

Darius's E is Apprehend

Passive: 122.png Darius Gains perminent armor penetration.

After a small delay, 122.png Darius will pull all enemies that are in front of him towards himself slowing them and granting sight around the area he pulled from.

dot-pattern.png Tips and Tricks dot-pattern.png

You can use your dariusaxegrabcone.png E to catch enemies and stop some of their dashes. For example, your dariusaxegrabcone.png E can stop 98.png Shen's shene.png E, 236.png Lucian's luciane.png  E and many other enemy movement abilities. In team fights, you want to focus whoever you can and dariusaxegrabcone.png E them towards yourself. In the laning phase, you can use your dariusaxegrabcone.png E to start trades and aid in ganks. For example, if your ally comes to gank you then you should use your dariusaxegrabcone.png E on the enemy to get them closer to yourself.

Screenshot_4.png

red_line.png

Darius's Ultimate is Noxian Guillotine

122.png Darius dashes a small distance and becomes unstoppable in attempts to execute an enemy champion. This ability deals true damage and increases with the amount of dariuspassive.png Hemorrhage Stacks.

If 122.png Darius kills a target with his dariusexecute.png ultimate, then all nearby minions and monsters will flee for 3 seconds and become slowed. If he did kill them, he will be able to recast his dariusexecute.png ultimate against on an enemy champion for up to 20 seconds after the first with no additional mana cost. He can repeat this process as long as his dariusexecute.png ultimate finishes off the enemies. At Rank 3, dariuspassive.png Noxian Guillotine's cooldown is completely reset if he executes an enemy with his dariusexecute.png ultimate.

dot-pattern.png Tips and Tricks dot-pattern.png

Using and mastering 122.png Darius's dariusexecute.png Ultimate can be hard however practise does make perfect. In general, you want to use your dariusexecute.png ultimate to finish off enemies- like a finisher move in other games. Because of the reset on his dariusexecute.png Ultimate, during team fights, you need to use it at the last possible second and finish off enemies with it. This will cause the ability to reset and be able to be used again.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

This is the start that you will be taking in most games. This will give you lane dominace.
If you're against a champion who is ranged or has lots of poke, take Doran's Shield.

Core Items

Your first item is going to be The Black Cleaver.
For your second item you want to purchase boots.
Randiun's Omen should be your third item on Darius.
For your fourth item I recommend you take Spirit Visage.
For you fifth item you want to get Dead Mans Plate.
For your final item you want to get Guardians Angel.

Situational Items

If you are against a heavy AP team comp, you should get a Hexdrinker early and upgrade it to Maw later on.
If the enemy has lots of sustain such as a Soraka or Janna, Vladamir or Swain you should get a Executioner's Calling.
If you're struggling early against a heavy poke laner who is ranged, you should get early Armor like a Chain Vest or Bramble Vest.
If you have fallen behind early from bad trades or you've been camped and are behind. Start building some defensive items and sustain.
The only two boots you should take on Dearest Darius. Ninja Tabi against a heavy AD/Poke team or Merc's against a heavy AP/CC team.

Item Description

red_line.png

Like many other toplaners you want to be taking 1055.png Doran's Blade as your main starting item. You should take this if you're against melee champions or enemies you win against such as 57.png Maokai or 98.png Shen. I would recommend taking 1054.png Doran's Shield if you're against an AP champion or somebody who has range, such as 8.png Vladamir, 17.png Teemo or 50.png Swain. Your first major item is going to be 3071.png The Black Cleaver. This is a very good item and will give you a range of stats that will allow you to deal damage to the enemy laners whilst also staying healthy. Alternativly, if you're against a champion who is a toughy such as 133.png Quinn, then you may want to pick up 1001.png boots as your first item. 3047.png Ninja Tabi will be really good early as it will block incoming damage against the enemy which will aid in you farming. If you do buy 3071.png The Black Cleaver first, then your second item will be 1001.png boots. I recommend to get 3111.png Merc Treads if you're against an AP champion such as 50.png Swain, and 3047.png Ninja Tabi if you're against a heavy AD team or laning against a ranged champion.

red_line.png

For your third item you want to take 3143.png Randuins Omen. This item gives you defensive stats that you need for the mid game. This is also very good if you're against a heavy AD enemy team. Your fourth item should be 3065.png Spirit Visage. This item will give you more defensive stats and cooldown reduction. This item will also improve your 7.png healing from your dariuscleave.png Q. In some cases, you can take 3065.png Spirit Visage before 3143.png Randuin's Omen however this is situational.

122.png Darius's fifth and sixth items are going to be 3742.png Dead Man's plate and 3026.png Guardian's Angel. Because of 122.png Darius's kit, you need to have alot of defensive stats and damage to be strong. These two items will allow you to sustain and survive team fights whilst also dealing damage and being able to kill the enemy.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

This is a farm lane as you will not always be able to kill them and they cannot kill you. Try your best to skirmish against the enemy champion but do not get cocky. Try your best to deny the enemy and get ahead.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

This is a farm lane as you will not always be able to kill them and they cannot kill you. Try your best to skirmish against the enemy champion but do not get cocky. Try your best to deny the enemy and get ahead. Beware of Cho'Gaths Silence and sustain.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

This is a good matchup for Darius because the enemy champion is a tank champion and also melee. In general, you should win this lane. With that said you should go for trades whenever they miss position or go to farm. You need to win this lane and put the enemy behind as much as you can. Beware of Dr Mundos early game damage. It does stack very hard and you need to dodge his Q’s. When going for trades, try to auto him as much as possible because of your bleed passive.

VS

Galio

Easy

This is a farm lane as you will not always be able to kill them and they cannot kill you. Try your best to skirmish against the enemy champion but do not get cocky. Try your best to deny the enemy and get ahead.

VS

Garen

Easy

This matchup is going to be a skill based matchup. Each champion has their pros and cons. But you need to be aware of what the enemy has and what you can do. Both champions like to fight often, so try your best to come out ahead of trades. Do not waste your abilities on farming, as the enemy will fight during the cool down period. You can fight them if they use or waste an ability.

VS

Gnar

Medium

This matchup is going to be a skill based matchup. Each champion has their pros and cons. But you need to be aware of what the enemy has and what you can do. Both champions like to fight often, so try your best to come out ahead of trades. Do not waste your abilities on farming, as the enemy will fight during the cool down period. VS

Gragas

Both champions like to fight often, so try your best to come out ahead of trades. Do not waste your abilities on farming, as the enemy will fight during the cool down period. You can fight them if they use or waste an ability.

VS

Malphite

Easy

This is a good matchup for Darius because the enemy champion is a tank champion and also melee. In general, you should win this lane. With that said you should go for trades whenever they miss position or go to farm. You need to win this lane and put the enemy behind as much as you can. Beware of his armor stacking. Try your best to poke him and auto him whenever it is about to come up. Make sure to keep his passive down as much as possible. If it is up, then a lot of the damage you deal will be neglected.

VS

Maokai

Medium

This is a good matchup for Darius because the enemy champion is a tank champion and also melee. In general, you should win this lane. With that said you should go for trades whenever they miss position or go to farm. You need to win this lane and put the enemy behind as much as you can. Maokai does deal a lot of damage especially with his saplings so beware of bushes. Trading with Maokai can be quite deadly, because of his kit he will sustain through the trades and will usually come out healthy. You should look to trade if he has either used an ability or is pushing.

VS

Ornn

Medium

This is a good matchup for Darius because the enemy champion is a tank champion and also melee. In general, you should win this lane. With that said you should go for trades whenever they miss position or go to farm. You need to win this lane and put the enemy behind as much as you can. While you do beat tanks on paper. Ornn is going to be tough because of his kit and passive. Try your best to deny him farm when you can and go for trades when he has used one of his main abilities. Make sure to dodge his dash and his knock up.

VS

Poppy

VS

Quinn

Hard

This is a frustrating matchup because the enemy has the ranged advantage. Ideally you would not pick Darius into a ranged matchup because you lose a lot of what makes him strong from melee matchups. In this matchup you need to play safe and not get to cocky, just because you’re Darius that doesn’t mean that you can win this lane. I recommend that you read below on how to play against a ranged champion. Against Quinn you will need to buy Doran’s Shield to start with, otherwise you will not be able to farm. Your main job in this matchup is to survive and poke whenever you can. Beware of Quinn’s all in potential and do not get to aggressive. You can purchase early Ninja Tabi’s if you are struggling.

VS

Renekton

Hard

This matchup is going to be a skill based matchup. Each champion has their pros and cons. But you need to be aware of what the enemy has and what you can do. Both champions like to fight often, so try your best to come out ahead of trades. Do not waste your abilities on farming, as the enemy will fight during the cool down period. You can fight them if they use or waste an ability.

VS

Riven

Medium

This matchup is going to be a skill based matchup. Each champion has their pros and cons. But you need to be aware of what the enemy has and what you can do. Both champions like to fight often, so try your best to come out ahead of trades. Do not waste your abilities on farming, as the enemy will fight during the cool down period. You can fight them if they use or waste an ability.

VS

Shen

Easy

This is a good matchup for Darius because the enemy champion is a tank champion and also melee. In general, you should win this lane. With that said you should go for trades whenever they miss position or go to farm. You need to win this lane and put the enemy behind as much as you can. Beware of Shens taunt and his level 6 ultimate. You can stop his ultimate with your pull. During the laning phase you want to auto him as much as possible however do not if he uses his W. Wait for the cooldown and then go in again for a trade

VS

Sion

Medium

This is a good matchup for Darius because the enemy champion is a tank champion and also melee. In general, you should win this lane. With that said you should go for trades whenever they miss position or go to farm. You need to win this lane and put the enemy behind as much as you can. Sions passive is very strong and he does deal a lot of damage. Try to dodge his knock up, and make sure to never play to aggressive when the enemy jungler is missing. This is a good lane for you, but you may not be able to kill the Sion.

VS

Swain

Medium

This is a frustrating matchup because the enemy has the ranged advantage. Ideally you would not pick Darius into a ranged matchup because you lose a lot of what makes him strong from melee matchups. In this matchup you need to play safe and not get to cocky, just because you’re Darius that doesn’t mean that you can win this lane. I recommend that you read below on how to play against a ranged champion. In this matchup you need to buy Magic resist boots early as well as some other MR items. You may want to get the Executioner’s Calling. He will get a lot of sustain from his ultimate and from last hitting. If he wastes an ability, then that will be your best time to go for trades against him. Try your best to farm and get as much CS as you can.

VS

Teemo

Teemo is incredibly frustrating to play against. You need to buy magic resist early and pick up a Doran’s Shield to start with. Just try to farm what you can, and try to stay in experience range whenever you’re in lane. You will have to sacrifice CS for experience.

VS

Trundle

VS

Tryndamere

You do well against Trynda, do not ult if he uses his!

VS

Vladimir

Medium

This is a frustrating matchup because the enemy has the ranged advantage. Ideally you would not pick Darius into a ranged matchup because you lose a lot of what makes him strong from melee matchups. In this matchup you need to play safe and not get to cocky, just because you’re Darius that doesn’t mean that you can win this lane. I recommend that you read below on how to play against a ranged champion. Against Vlad you can do quite well, this is because your passive bleeding will be very strong against him. In this matchup you need to buy Magic resist boots early as well as some other MR items. You may want to get the Executioner’s Calling.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

You do really well against a Yasuo. Yasuo is very hard to play and the enemy will most likely outplay them selves. During this time, use your combo and kill them when they missplay.

VS

Yorick

Medium

This matchup is going to be a skill based matchup. Each champion has their pros and cons. But you need to be aware of what the enemy has and what you can do. Both champions like to fight often, so try your best to come out ahead of trades. Do not waste your abilities on farming, as the enemy will fight during the cool down period. You can fight them if they use or waste an ability.

Early Game Back to Top

Early Game

red_line.png

Your main job during the laning phase and the early game is to deny, harass and kill the enemy. The early game is pretty simple for 122.png Darius because of his champion design and overall laning experience. Because of your dariuspassive.png passive, you will deal lots of damage to the enemies during the laning phase especially if they are melee. Try your best to poke them and go for trades whenever they come to CS. You have a very good chance of killing the enemies if you hit level 2 first. In the top lane, it takes 7 minions to get level 2, you want level 2 before the enemy and in most cases should go in for a trade while the enemy is level 1.

You should poke the enemies with a simple dariusaxegrabcone.png E + dariuscleave.png Q + AA + dariusnoxiantacticsonh.png W Combo and try to get your dariuspassive.png passive full stacks off as much as possible. Your main job is to poke and harass- if the enemy comes to get cs. Auto attack them and make them pay for it! Beware, do not get to cocky, and make sure to hug the bushes to drop minion agro.

If you're against a ranged champion you will not be able to play so aggressively. Instead, you will have to play passive and not get cocky or greed for farm. Ideally, you will not be picking 122.png Darius into a ranged champion as you will be missing out on a lot of his early game strength.

red_line.png

Mid Game Back to Top

Mid Game

red_line.png

During the Mid game and team fighting is where 122.png Darius is really good. You should be looking for picks while you're pushing and going for objectives. There are two ways you can play 122.png Darius during the mid-game, and I feel that doing both is very good. The first thing you can do is to split push, if you had a good early game you should be fed. This means you can easily splitpush and fight enemies if they come. However, if you're doing this make sure to keep the map warded and know where the enemy is at all times. The second thing to do is team fight. This is an okay thing to do but isn't always recommended unless both side lanes are pushing.

Instead of doing one or the other, you should do a mixture of both. You should go for picks whilst splitpushing but also go to group with your team if they need you. A good player knows when and how to split push. So split push when you can, but you should go and help your team if they need you.

red_line.png

Late Game Back to Top

Late Game

red_line.png

The late game is where 122.png Darius slightly falls off but is still useful. During this time you need to focus on killing and executing as many enemies as possible. You should use your dariusaxegrabcone.png E and pull in an enemy champion and follow up with a combo and try to make them bleed from your dariuspassive.png passive. With the nature of your dariusexecute.png Ultimate, you want to use this when the enemy is low health- Maybe you will get a pentakill with it and make it reset 5 times!

In team fights, you can decide to either pull the tank or pull the carry. You should try to damage the carry if possible but be aware of your team's ability to follow you up when you go in, if they cannot follow you up, then you should not go for the carry. Instead, go for the person who is on your carrys. Be a secondary peeler and help your team. Like I stated above and throughout the guide, make sure to get max stacks on your dariuspassive.png passive and only use your dariusexecute.png ultimate if you can execute enemies.

red_line.png

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

Tips and Tricks

red_line.png

  1.  Never use your dariusexecute.png Ultimate unless you can execute an enemy and finish them off with it- especially in team fights.
  2. If you're against a melee champion such as 57.png Maokai or 98.png Shen then you need to utilize your dariuspassive.png passive as much as possible by auto attacking them and poking them whenever they come to farm.
  3. Because of your dariuspassive.png passive and you being a melee champion, you will need to drop minion agro when you attack the enemy. So you should hug the topside of the map near the bushes.
  4. Your dariusnoxiantacticsonh.png W is a auto attack reset, so auto attack the enemy first and then use your dariusnoxiantacticsonh.png W to reset your auto and attack again.
  5. If you are running low on health because of a bad trade, try to use your dariuscleave.png Q and 7.png heal as much as possible.
  6. When going for trades especially in the early game, keep auto attacking and kiting the enemy. This means your dariuspassive.png passive will continue to stack and you should be able to do even more damage to enemies.

    red_line.png

Pros and Cons Back to Top

Pros and Cons

red_line.png

Pros:

  • Very strong fighter especially against melee champions and tanks.
  • Lots of damage in the early game thanks to his passive.
  • The enemy has to respect him or they will die.
  • Simple mechanics to play and easy to learn.
  • Fun.
  • Point and click ultimate.
  • Possibility of easy pentakills thanks to your ultimate reset.

Cons

  • Useless against ranged enemies.
  • Easily kited by ADC's or ranged champions.
  • Draws minion agro which can stack up and kill you if you let it continue.
  • You have to play slightly "reckless" because of your kit. Such as you have to expect the enemy to be an idiot and get to cocky.

Basic Laning Phase Combos:

  •   dariusaxegrabcone.png E + AA + dariuscleave.png Q + AA + dariusnoxiantacticsonh.png W  | Standard Combo - good for ganks.

How to Lane against a Ranged Champion Back to Top

How to lane Melee vs Ranged

red_line.png

In League of Legends, there are a plethora of champions with different shapes, sizes and abilities. Many champions are melee and are recognizable by their point blank basic attacks. If you’ve ever played a game of League and if you’re reading this, you would know how unfortunate and painful it is to play as a melee champion against a ranged one.

Many players seem to give up the laning phase when they see that they’re against a ranged champion. Fear not! We will discuss some things you can do in these matchups to help improve your laning experience. Using the information presented will allow you to be more active in lane rather than giving it over to the enemy.

Starting Items

If you are a champion that doesn’t have the best early game, then I recommend starting with Doran’s Shield. This item is good as it gives you some early defensive stats that will benefit you in the early levels and help you sustain. Realistically, you will be unable to always trade exclusively against ranged champions. Taking early defensive stats will allow you to survive for longer during the early stages of the game.

Dorans Shield is a great starting item.

The item itself gives 80 health and flat health regeneration every 5 seconds. This is good because it will heal you back quicker when you are attacked. It will also restore health when taking damage from enemies. I do not recommend taking harass for free, but in some situations you will have to take damage to farm. This is overall a really good item to start with because it will allow you to survive in lane for longer against the enemy's harassment.

Level 1/2

In Melee versus Ranged matchups, the lane is quickly dictated by who hits level 2 first. In the all matchups, you will want to hit level 2 first but especially in melee versus ranged. If you do not get the level 2 first, then you will be denied minions and farm. While you may not be able to do anything against Ranged champions early, it is important to hit the level 2 to stay up in CS. Being an equal level will prevent the enemy going for extremely trades in the early levels. This will also prevent you from being poked out and losing minions and the experience. Farming is something you need to do and you must make sure to keep the wave in a reasonable position so you can farm easier.

Trading

Going for early trades against champions with ranged can be one way of swinging the lane into your advantage. If you can get the level 2 advantage, then you can go for a trade if the enemy is still level 1.

You can try to fight them if you have ranged abilities such as Akali Q, Zed Q and Talon W. However, this is very situational and depends on the champion you’re playing and who you’re against. It is recommended to look up your champion's power spikes. Most Assassins have the opportunity for an early level trade such as Zed’s W+Q combo. Champions who deal damage will benefit more from these early level trades compared to tanks.

Ability Farming

Most champions in League of Legends have at least 1 damaging ability. Some of them cost mana, some cost health and others cost energy. If you're in a matchup where you are being heavily denied CS from a champion with range, then I recommend trying to farm with your abilities.

If your ability doesn't cost any mana, then it is possible that you can farm with that ability. Dr. Mundo, The Madman of Zaun, has his Q ability that doesn't cost any mana but instead health. This ability will refund the cost if you kill the enemy hit. This can be a good way of farming because you are able to regenerate and get the cost back immediately or over time.

There are some other champions that can benefit from using their abilities to farm with such as Zed. While this sounds good on paper, it is highly situational. You should not, and I do not recommend using your abilities to only farm with. You need to poke and last hit. If you are only farming with your abilities, then you lose all your poke potential. You should not use your abilities to farm if they have high mana costs.

Sacrifice CS for Experience

Getting farm is incredibly important. In lanes where you will be poked when going to take farm, it is best to sacrifice some of them for the experience. While you do need gold and minions to buy items, experience and staying alive is more important. You need to stay up in CS and levels to still be hazardous to the enemy. While high elo players suggest getting a high amount of CS at 10 minutes, in lanes like this you will have to take what you can get. I recommend always trying to get Cannon minions, but be prepared to sacrifice some. Is that minion gold worth the amount of harassment from the enemy? Keep that in mind when farming.

Itemization

Depending on your champion, you may need to pick up more defensive items early. If you’re a tank and playing against someone with range such as a Kayle or Swain. I recommend buying early armor or magic resist before getting your first core item.

In Season 7, Bramble Vest was introduced and it is an amazing item. It’s a mini Thornmail with the same “Thorns” passive. It will deal damage back to enemies when you’re being attacked from basic attacks. This is good as it will allow you to deal damage to them when they attack you. At 1000 gold, the item grants 35 armor which will also help you when trading and farming.

There are many other defensive items out there. Some may be more viable then others and you should build what you need right now to survive the laning phase. Ninja Tabi is another good example of an early defensive item. However, you should only get this item if you will directly benefit from it.

Minion Wave

In every laning phase, you should play around with minion waves to get the most out of your lane. This depends on your champion, but you should try to have it in a more defensive position outside of your tower. You do not want to push the wave because the enemy will easily freeze the wave in a position much further up in the lane and deny you CS. This is something you do not want to happen. When backing or roaming, push the wave as far as you can so they cannot take your tower. Minions will act on instinct and if you’re being attacked by autos from the enemy champion, they will switch targets. This means the wave may mess up - keep that in mind when playing around with minions.

Roaming

If you’ve messed up the minion wave and are being heavily denied, then you should roam. If you are a champion with any potential CC, then you can look to roam and rotate with or without your jungler. Before roaming, make sure that it will be worth it. Push the wave so the enemy cannot take your tower. Look for potential opening in the game where you can gank your middle or bot. Wait for the enemy to use a core ability before going ham.

You must remember that you will be in a disadvantaged position at the start of the game. It is important to farm up and play safe especially early. You should try to position the wave in a favourable position to sustain a high level of creeps while also staying healthy and not being poked easily by enemies. It is better to stay a few CS behind early rather than having to back because you took too much aggro. Practise makes perfect when playing melee versus ranged. Every lane is different so keep an eye on what you can do to have the best possible outcome to this laning phase. In many cases, experience matters as League of Legends is a very, very situational game.
