Summoner Spells Back to Top

Pretty basic. You need tp to be anywhere for team fights, denying towers, or getting farm. Flash is also a must need to get out of tough situations or to catch people when they are running. The only other thing I could see you ever using on Mundo is maybe ignite for tp if you want to counter another mundo or something, but even then I would probably choose tp.

Really want to point out that some guides may say to max E second, but I feel that is almost unnecessary compared to how W can affect your laning and team fighting. That being said, mess around in normals and see if you like a maxed E second and go from there, E is definitely under looked and  can do damage. Make sure not to keep W on too long though, I usually use it for dots added from the other dots coming from my Sunfire Cape3068_32.png. Mostly just throw q's at the carries and ult to keep up your regen and stay in the fight as much as possible.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

I almost always start this but you could definitely start Cloth armor as well.
The cloth armor start is nice especially if you want the armor and want to buy more health pots. Definitely a good start.
A very alternative start that I hear is ruby crystal and 2 pots so you can build into the cloak but I never start it. It's pretty good but I just like the sustain I get from the other starts more. I'm not one to do things different then what I'm used to and you don't see too much ap top lane so this is a very alternative start for me. Seems good though.

Core Items

In a normal match up against someone like Malphite or someone that is tanky and just trying to out tank you then you need to try and rush sunfire to out farm him and also add dots in fights in lane and in team fights. You could also rush something like Randuins but this is totally up to you.
Only one match up specifically makes you rush this first imo and that is Aatrox and this is for you to be able to keep up with him in lane without him bullying you too hard.
Against heavy team AP, and laner AP. Really not bad in general because it stacks with your passive but I prefer the other 2 starts more personally.
Very often you will see some counter picks like Olaf, Darius, Irelia, etc. that you might want to rush Warmog's for sustain early. I like this start and has won me many fights against Darius's in silver.
Your final build should look something like this getting all those items I listed above in the order you choose while finishing with banshees and buying a homeguard on your boots. (Remember to buy the other pots too when you are full build as well. I choose the tenacity pot)

Situational Items

Some situations will have you get a thornmail for an adc or someone like Kayle that builds attack speed.
If you are ahead and want to have some fun and do some damage, then one fun item to build is a Liandry's for the burn damage and this will also give you some health as well. All around a fun item to play with when you are ahead.
You could also build something like Guardian angel so that way you can have some MR and health while having a second life and being a real annoyance to the enemy team. Not really a something I do but I have seen this done before and really mess a team up.

VS

Aatrox

Hard

Rush Warden's Mail3082_32.png and just try and stay with him in lane. Ganks will also usually be needed to beat him but after wardens mail you should feel more confident.

VS

Akali

Medium

This used to be a matchup I would see in top lane but I don't think it's viable anymore. She can't burst you early game so take advantage of it early and poke her with q and farm. Be careful level 6 though, she does get quite the damage spike and is not to be taken lightly, but with your ult and damage output with q and w dots, you should be fine and shouldn't get too bullied.

VS

Alistar

Easy

I've seen this maybe once or twice. He has no damage and might just headbutt you for 100 dmg but you chunk health more so just q him and farm. More or a troll pick more than anything.

VS

Azir

Medium

I've also seen this quite a lot last season when he was released but it's died down. He is annoying early with his soldiers but just isn't a huge threat later in lane. He is good as hell in team fights but with you taking all the damage your team should be fine.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

You actually have range on him and he's kind of squishy early. Try and bully him and don't let him stack his ult too much. A good gank will screw him early and put you ahead well.

VS

Darius

Hard

Darius can really be a pain, especially if he runs ignite14.png along with his passive, you will struggle. Just farm with q and get that early warmogs 3083_32.png and you should be fine though. If you still find yourself struggling then try not to give him a lot of kills. If he gets about 2 kills just play safe, ask for ganks, and wait for late game. He falls off hard late game where you are still very viable.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

This ditto is kind of boring. You might see a q once in a while but mostly you guys should be farming and trying to tank as much as possible. Just keep distance and try and occasionally bully him with q's.

VS

Fiora

Hard

Kind of hard, just get sunfire and farm. You really can't beat her and especially if she runs armor pen runes. No fun. Play safe and ask for help from the jungler. Never think you can duel her either. Unless you have put her so far behind from jungle ganks or she just wasn't that good at all and you are about 3 levels ahead then do not, I repeat, DO NOT 1v1 her. She is one of the best duelist in the game.

VS

Fizz

Medium

Don't see this often but can't say for sure, but fizz used to be my other main till I found Mundo. Fizz is slippery and can do some damage, but with his recent nerf he is way too weak early game to be a threat to you. Just farm up and maybe throw some q's at him every once and a while.

Note: I updated this to be a little harder to face because now he goes ad and with this his q does damage. Be weary of level 6 and if he runs ignite because he will all in you. Try dodging his ult and you should be good. Bait his E and make sure to q him after his e if you can.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Really don't see this much. but he isn't too strong, but his citrus move (E?) is kind of annoying against you, and he crits. Just farm and try to bully him with q as much as possible.

VS

Garen

Medium

This is a boring match up too. You do more damage but he can heal better than you with his passive and get's really tanky fast. Just try and bully fast once you get your sunfire cape3068_32.png and farm up.

VS

Gnar

Medium

He can do some damage but you can beat this little munchkin. Poke with your q before he is big gnar and go for the kill once he is big gnar and make sure to dodge his skillshot and his smash move and you should be good.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

Okay, so this little butthole goes top now, and it's annoying. I used to play him all the time in top just to mess with people like malphite or garen, but now it's more viable for him to go top lane. He can screw you over, especially early game. Just try and farm without getting hit by his turrets or any of the other barrage of things he has. He is also really hard to gank and usually ends up with a kill or 2 if you do so just try and play safe and farm, about all I can say.

VS

Irelia

Hard

She does true damage, you really need to play safe here and get as much help from the jungler as possible. She is really hard to beat, especially if the Irelia is smart and runs armor pen runes.

VS

Jarvan IV

Hard

I have seen this quite often, he shreds armor. He can be quite a bully. Just try and play safe and farm under turret.

VS

Jax

Easy

He can be annoying but you have poke him hard with Q and zone his jump with it and that eliminates his Counter strike move as well. Just try and get your sunfire 3068_32.pngas fast as possible and farm.

VS

Kassadin

Medium

I've seen this before and just bully him with your q while trying not to get hit by his q. He usually isn't too strong in the top lane because he usually is trying to get some tank. He's very hard to kill though with his Rift walk and his slow.

VS

Kayle

Medium

Kind of annoying but just try and farm and ignore her. She can do damage with her q and her AA but if you q farm you should be fine. If she goes Attack speed then just build thronmail and you should be good.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Never seen this matchup so I can't really say that I know what to do, but just don't underestimate his damage output.

VS

Lee Sin

Easy

This is not seen too often, but when it happens take advantage of it. He doesn't do tons of damage and you can bully him when he tries to farm by hitting him with q's. He's got his jumps though that will really bait out those cleavers but just make sure to wait for the second jump away from you then throw it.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

This is popular right now but I don't see it a crap ton. Try and play safe and watch out for her ult and farm. You should be fine once you build Spirit Vissage3065_32.png

VS

Malphite

Medium

Kind of boring, both are really too tanky to kill each other so you are mostly just going to be bulling while throwing q's every once and a while. Just farm and get as tanky as possible.

VS

Maokai

Medium

same as malphite really, just might see his root once in a while but unless he builds full AP you are just going to farm. Just watch out for mini groots and get tanky.

VS

Nasus

Easy

So, this is interesting. I hate D CANE because he really is a easily dumb champion. Just try and stand on top of his minions that he wants to stack early game. He will probably hit you and take minion aggro and you won't take much damage form his Q early for it is weak early and he will take minion aggro and you just continue the cycle for a bit and farm. Try and bully with q as much as possible. DO NOT LET HIM STACK.

VS

Nidalee

Medium

This is a bs matchup, if she hits a q and it was decently ranged then he can chunk you in the early game and probably 100 to 0 you, that being said, if you dodge this then you need to throw a q back at her and go back to farming. Be careful in lane and just try and dodge those spears and q her back.

VS

Nunu

Medium

Uh, this is a very VERY weird match up. Jusst farm and q him every once and a while and be weary of his ult come level 6. His ult can devastate you early game with no MR. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

VS

Olaf

Hard

Olaf bullies you because he does true damage and can really 1v1 you hard. Try and farm the best you can and try to get ganks if you can. He is the anti tank bruiser for a reason.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

I don't see this anymore really but he can bully early and make you leave lane, just try and q him and zone him and you should be fine. He can burst you hard though. Just be careful and farm.

VS

Poppy

Medium

I don't even know if I should make a match up for this one. I like poppy and she can be a bruiser, but you really shouldn't be too afraid of her. Just farm and q her and watch out for the stuns into the wall.

VS

Rengar

Medium

Saw this once, hated it. He can just do so much damage if he gets in the bush and jumps out at you early in the game. Just be careful early till you get sunfire cape 3068_32.png and just farm up.

VS

Riven

Hard

Just watch out for this champ late game. Try and bully early game and get her behind. Early ganks will put her behind and that's what she needs is the early game lead to be good

VS

Rumble

Medium

You need to make sure to keep distance on him, he can do some damage. If you keep distance on his fire and skillshots, you should be fine and can win lane.

VS

Shen

Easy

Very easy to bully. Just q bully him and farm. Easy peasy.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

She tanks too but you really need to be careful of her damage as well. She can be hard to beat, try to be safe and farm up as best as possible.

VS

Singed

Easy

Singed isn't too hard but you need to be careful for a few things. You can really set him apart from you with some early game pressure by hitting him with as many q's as possible and trying to keep him out of your lane. If this is done correctly he becomes less of a tank than you and can really be useless to the enemy team and give you tank rights, however, he isn't the easiest to kill. He has his poison which can stop your heal from being extremely effective and can flip you back into it whenever but your heal out scales his poison damage and you can get some early sustain and win lane or get sunfire and add dots to him in fights in lane and you should be good. Just try to be cautious of his poison and farm up.

VS

Sion

Medium

This matchup seems to be a bit tough for mundo at times. He has a little bit farther poke then you with his e. Try to dodge all of those the best you can. Make sure to farm as best as possible with your q and e and hide under tower if you take too much harass.

VS

Teemo

Easy

Have fun with this. His shrooms give grevious wounds but if you get a sweeper then you can really be fine and take him 1 on 1 cause his blind really isn't enough early.

VS

Trundle

Easy

don't see this really at all. Only played it a couple of times, just watch out for his bite and just q bully him till he's low health.

VS

Udyr

Medium

Saw this once as well and hated it. His early game is good and can do a good amount of damage, and once he get's tri force 3078_32.png then he can be even more annoying. Just try and farm and cheese him with early ganks from the jungler. You are still way more viable to the team then he is though in team fights but be cautious of him in those fights because he can target the carry hard.

VS

Warwick

Medium

I don't see this at all really but he can life steal of you form his ult very well. Just try and get some early sustain with Warmogs 3083_32.png and you should be good.

VS

Wukong

Hard

He can shred armor as well, be careful and farm for late game. He can be a pest in lane and annoying but you should be fine under tower.

Pros and Cons to Mundo Back to Top

Pro's

-He's tanky as all hell
-Can really be a nuisance to the enemy team in team fights
-has probably the second best health regen in the game
-Can do pretty good damage for being a full tank
-Has alright CC
-has great late game

Cons
-Has a weak early game
-Can be countered early game by ignite14.png
-Any grievous wounds move also counters his heal and ult

Most of Mundo's problems come from his early game. He is a very late game champ and get get bullied in lane. He is amazing late game and can be a great presence for a team in a team fight. He is very good at being in the teams face and taking little damage and just changing a tide for a team with his slow+% health damage q and his dots from his w. He is an overall great tank for team fights.

Final advice Back to Top

Mundo brings tons of pressure to fights but not much in lane. My advice to Dr. Mundo is to be pretty passive aggressive with q and just try and farm as best as possible till late game. You are the tank for the team that can be in anyone's face at any time and need to try and focus the carries on the other team. Just throw q's and turn on w for dots and press e for the AD steroid and try to stay alive. Usually I put all that on and ult because late game your ult heals for more than you lose by having abilities on so it's safe to keep on, however, if you are taking tons of damage then make sure to turn it off, same goes for lane farm. If you are pushed to the tower then you can for sure press w and e while still throwing q's to get a real fast clear time but be sure to turn off w immediately after to reduce the damage taken from w. It's health taken from him during the early game is low but you don't have to take unnecessary damage if you don't need to. Make sure to be weary of all the things going on in other lanes as well so that you may tp and be there for anyone who needs help. It's a team game and you are the biggest team player as mundo. Mundo's biggest flaws come from the early game. He is weak early game and he has to use his health to use any abilities. Try to farm as best as possible as mundo with q and last hit with it so you get a percentage of health back as well. The farm is very important. You are very reliant on the late game and bring so much to the late game that you need to be thinking for the long run.
