Summoner Spells Back to Top

14.png  -   I personally do not find myself using ignite much because Ekko has a weak lane phase and most likely will not be able to use ignite to solo kill his laner during lane phase and ignite doesn't really scale as well into the late game.I do however make exceptions against laners that ignite can give you possible leads and snowballs or when ignite is useful in healing reduction. examples : Cassiopeia, Vlad.

12.png- Tp is the spell that you will run in most cases as it gives you the most control of the game and ekko has great tp ganks. on a side note it allows you to keep up with global pressure from other champions you may be against like Twisted Fate.

6.png- ghost is better than most people realize on ekko, although it is true that there is a soft cap on movespeed and if you used ghost and procd your passive you would hit that soft cap, most of the time you use ghost to catch up to someone or get away or reposition, times where you are not popping your passive and therefore they will most likely not overlap. Give it a try and see if it fits your playstyle.

3.png- Finally exhaust is the most broken spell in the game because it can straight up win you a late team fight and the game, i have had a lot of success with running exhaust mid, again give it a try and see if it fits your play style.

Masteries Back to Top

Intelligence and Precision on the Cunning tree is something that varies a lot between Ekko players, I prefer Intelligence as of Season 7 because of Lethality not being as good for mages as early armor pen was.

You need to level Q > E > Q now in order to 2 Q the caster minions. If you don't care about killing the caster minions in 2 Q's early, then Q > E > W is best.

NOTE: If you think your jungler will be ganking for you at level 3 or you have kill pressure, you should still go Q > E > W.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

You go this start if you feel like you will be using a lot of mana to fight or farm. I go this start if I am playing top lane ekko.
you go this start if you want both a dark seal and corrupting pot. This is the most gold efficient item start and path and what i prefer to go.
This start is for lanes that will heavily harass you like leblanc
This start is a lifesaver against any champion that will poke you down. I start this against jayce, ahri, orianna sometimes.

Core Items

Order: FQC> DCAP> VOID> LICH > Banshees. void and lich can be swapped positions if enemy team has no mr which is unlikely but possible. You can also get banshees second item if heavy ap or need the spell shield.
order: Morello>Dcap>void>lich>Banshees. void and lich can be swapped positions if enemy team has no mr which is unlikely but possible
order: gunblade>lich>Banshees>void>dcap. You can swap out banshees for zhonyas if you need it
order:roa>dcap>lich>void>Banshees. Can swap out banshees for zhonya's if needed
    order:gunblade>lich>nash>void>dcap. Split Pushing Build

Situational Items

if you feel like you need the armor or want the active can swap out in places i have put abyssal i or rylais depending on which build you are going

For mid currently there are many different builds that are very successful and will work for you, the four builds i have listed are more a choice of play style than a this is best. My suggestion would be that you should try out all four builds, not once or twice, but at least 10 games each, i know that sounds like a lot but that will give you a good idea of which build fits your playstyle the best and which one is best for you.

3165.png- this build is a standard mid build and will feel the most comfortable for most players. i'd suggest getting sorc shoes as early as after lost chapter. additionally i would go flat ap blues or scaling ap blues or mr as you do not need cdr because of the 20% this is giving you.

3092.png- this is a build i made that has been getting a lot of attention as of late and it is my most preferred build mid lane. the explanation of this build is that because of the extreme low cost of the item it doesn't feel as bad to build first item even though it starts off not gold efficient but because of the gold generation it allows you to hit your power spikes harder and faster. with this build play more passive and farm into the early mid game where you will be very strong. a bonus to this build is the active sets up ganks, picks, gets you and your team out of ganks and or picks. A side note to this build is the crazy amount of ap this build gives you earlier on in the game. you should be able to have both your FQC and your Dcap done in 15-16 minutes and void staff on top of that at around 22 minutes giving you 400 ap in 22 minutes. Give this build a shot i have really grown to love it maybe you will as well. As of the mid season update this build has become even stronger now with the quest introduction. You should be able to finish the quest on this item by 20 minutes into the game giving you additional movement speed whenever you proc the tribute passive. The only thing that changed with this build is that you want to prioritize the codex side of the build first as the passive gets locked out on the frost fang side until you complete the Frost Queen's Claim.

3146.png- This is another build that i have fallen in love with over the last few months, when everyone was building protobelt i was building gunblade because i simply love this item and the burst/ healing it offers. this build gives you massive amount of burst to get a carry out of a team fight and if that appeals to you you will love this build. A note would be that if you fall behind on this build it is very difficult to recover as you will have to spend 1500 gold on the ad portion of it's build path and that hurts a lot, my suggestion would be to play safe until you have this item finished to lower the chance of you falling behind before gunblade is finished. finishing this item will give you a huge power spike and you can most likely pop anyone right as you finish it.

3027.png- this is your standard tanky ekko build and i would recommend going this build in any hard match up like fizz or leblanc where you will be constantly at risk of being blown up and this build allows you to get an early abyssal scepter as well that you will need against tough match ups.

3152.png - I don't personally like the protobelt build, but if you enjoy this item, the build is above.

VS

Ahri

Medium

when you go in and trade with her to proc your passive every ahri automatically throws their charm at you just juke up or down and dodge it you will win the trade

VS

Akali

Medium

you can abuse her before 6 but after 6 she will win every fight so take ignite and try to get an early kill

VS

Anivia

Medium

If she ever misses flashfrost.png you want to go for a trade. She has the lowest stats in the game so chances are you can get an early egg pop and call your jungler over to gank her after she is back up.

VS

Annie

Hard

Hard lane because her disintegrate.png
she will harass you every time you go for cs and you will likely get camped from her jungle as it is easy to gank for annie. play safe get what cs you can.

pretty easy to gank if she pushed into you so let your jungle do the work in this lane.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Medium

care for his early harass and his roam potential but if he doesn't win the lane by level 3 you win the lane

you need to go in and stay close to him to dodge his passive balls just don't get hit by initial aurelionsolQ.pngby running through him.

VS

Azir

Medium

He has poke and the potential to be a tough match up he's just very weak right now (6.22)

VS

Brand

Medium

If you get hit with stun you will probably die or lose trade so hard you have to back so don't get hit by it and you win

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

This lane is hard unless you have a lot of experience with the lane.

what you need to do is kill her before 6, you do this by taking ignite and all in her at 2 or 3 when caster minions are dead. YOU MUST DODGE HER cassiopeianoxiousblast.png
IF YOU DON'T SHE WILL OUT TRADE YOU AND YOU WILL DIE.
just go in dodge her q and you will win every trade, the skill in this match up comes from you being able to dodge her q

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

His silence can be very annoying and the true damage from his ult but he is very easy to hit with w and easy to gank so get 2 dorans rings and only fitght him off your w landing

VS

Corki

Hard

This lane is very difficult because of the amount of harass corki has you own't ever really win trades just play safe and farm

VS

Diana

Medium

you win before 6 she wins after 6 meaning you need to kill her early. Take ignite and play aggressive.

VS

Ezreal

Medium

He wins poke you win all in you need to avoid taking too much damage until 3 then you can win trades just don't get forced out of lane

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

pretty easy lane but harder to kill than you'd imagine due to the fear and or silence i wouldn't really solo dive this champion unless you are very sure you will kill him because of the fear.

VS

Fizz

Hard

One of Ekko's worst match ups mainly because of the ability fizzjump.png.

small tips would be go a tanky build like my roa build and try not to go for trades just get whatever cs you can safely get and don't die in lane. you will be more useful out of lane than he will be.

VS

Galio

Medium

If he is giving you trouble just farm and wait for your jungle, let him push into you and you can easily kill him with ganks.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

If you ever see him removescurvy.png you go for a trade off w as he won't be able to cleanse the stun

you can ekkoe.pngraisemorale.png  if you don't feel like you can out time his q with a melee

don't take too much harass level 1 and 2 going for cs give it up and soak exp  if you need that is the only time you lose to him in lane

VS

Gragas

Medium

Ap gragas can be scary in the right hands but if you dodge his gragasbodyslam.png you win

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

You can easily go in off of w and q down his turrets might take a few times to really get a feel for the match up though as it is kind of weird.

VS

Jayce

Hard

Hard lane because he can abuse the fact that you are a melee and will poke you for going for cs, he is very easy to gank if he shoves into your turret so play safe and wait for your jungler.

VS

Karma

Medium

A lot of poke but you can dodge her q most of the time just play it smart

VS

Karthus

Medium

Get good at dodging laywaste.png and you win

very easy to gank and very easy to hit your ekkoW.png

VS

Kassadin

Hard
nulllance.png
wrecks you pretty hard as he gets to trade with you then get a shield. he shouldn't be able to stop you as much from csing but he will never die to you unless he is pretty bad and can't be ganked after 6 just make your jungle aware that you will need to have help before kass hits 6

VS

Katarina

Medium

Don't stand next to a dagger and you can win the trades just be careful if she gets a lead she can snowball that lead.

VS

Kayle

Easy

Easiest match up for ekko in game

Only way she can poke / fight you is with her e and she has to use that to farm and her e pushed wave into you so she's easy to gank and she can't dodge your w.

just click on her and watch the timer for her e buff and go in as it is falling off.

VS

Kennen

Hard

Hard match up because of the amount of harass kennen has against melee champions. that being said it is a lane you can win if you are good with your w. i  might even go 2 dorans rings in this lane because you spend a lot of mana fighting kennen as you can only go in off your w

VS

Kog'Maw

Medium

He has a lot of poke but no real way to escape your w all in other than flashing so just stay away from his harass and all in him if he every throws kogmawvoidooze.png to farm minions.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

she has a lot of harass and kill potential on you as well as being hard to gank so go the tanky roa build and play safe.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

You might consider running Cleanse in this match up but mainly you want to dodge her lissandraQ.png and you win trades.

VS

Lulu

Hard

lot of harass against melee champions and luluw.png really hurts you

if she pushes up into you she isn't a hard gank so play back and safe and wait for your jungle

VS

Lux

Medium

Don't get snared and you can win pretty much every trade just go in off a stun or if she misses her luxlightbinding.png

VS

Malzahar

Medium

Mostly a farm lane because of his passive but you will get ganked a lot after level 6.

Tricks to proc his passive: you can obviously q or auto him, you can put w on him and wait .5 before popping it as the slow from w will pop his passive, you can also use the frost queen active to pop his passive

11.png- this is actually pretty good to run against him as it instantly kills the first voidling and he can't make anymore.

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

In a short lane it is much easier to deal with him compared to top lane you just tarde with him off your w. get 2 doran's rings for this lane as you will be using a lot of mp. also very easy to gank.

VS

Morgana

Medium

She is going to use her blackshield.png for your ekkoW.png
so don't really ever use it unless you want the shield for trades as it is a waste of mana if you're doing it for the stun.

other than that just don't get hit by her darkbindingmissile.png and you win the lane

VS

Orianna

Medium

Don't get hit by her q and you pretty much win every trade she uses a lot of mana to trade with you and she is very easy to hit with your w

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Very difficult lane because of his passive denying access to your passive, you will never win trade and he will deprive you from cs play safe get what cs you can without dying and try to get out of lane phase early you will be more useful in team fights.

VS

Rumble

Medium

Don't take too much harass till level 3 and you can win fairly easily. can hit your w easily as well on rumble and gank him with your jungler.

VS

Ryze

Hard

Ryze is currently ( as of season 7 preseason) one of the most broken champions in the game at a higher elo and will abuse the fact that you are melee, he is also very hard to gank. your best bet is to not stand next to minions he either has spellflux.png  on
or minions that are about to die as his e will spread to you. try to get him with ekkoW.png
from bush as well to set up ganks

VS

Sona

Medium

she has heavy poke but not a real way to dodge your w and she is very gankable learn her ranged and avoid her poke.

VS

Swain

Medium

Don't stand in his swainbeam.png
when he switches stances you have a long time before he can go back into his stance to heal so all in him after he switches back to regular form

Take 14.png

VS

Syndra

Medium

as of preseason of season 7 the only reason i don't have this match up listed as hard is because you can ult her ult. that being said this champion is broken and will out trade you until level 3. if she ever hits a stun you will die form her ult before you can ult. don't get hit by her stun go in after she misses a q, if you want to all in and kill you will need to flash over her to avoid her push back.

VS

Taliyah

Medium

you win trades she wins pokes, don't take too much harass from her till level 3 and you can kill. don't ever roll through her taliyahE.png

VS

Talon

Easy

You need to not let his return talonnoxiandiplomacy.png hit you
If you can avoid the return you will win every trade.

Has burst potential at 6 so care for that.

VS

Teemo

Hard

his blind stops your passive and makes it so that you will not win trades and will not be able to farm with auto attacks, the up side is that he is very easy to gank and he can't really dodge your w so play with your jungler on this one

VS

Twisted Fate

Medium

If he ever Blue cards you can trade immediately to get a good trade at worst this is a farm lane.

SPAM PING YOUR LANERS WHEN HE IS 6 AND LEAVES LANE.

VS

Varus

Medium

Do not ever die to this man in lane or you will have a very tough game ahead varus is very feast or famine just don't get poked out before level 3 and you can win all ins

VS

Veigar

Medium

This lane can be difficult because you have low kill pressure if he plays it correctly and he out scales you.

Easy to hit with w

Easy to gank if pushes up

Most likely you will look to out roam him.

VS

Vel'Koz

Medium

Dodge his skill shots and you win

VS

Viktor

Hard

Viktor has an incredible amount of harass against melee minions and he is especially problematic because he scales harder than you into the late game, best advice here is try to be more useful in the early lane phases by pushing getting good roam times and helping other lanes/ jungle.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

He will out-sustain your damage and harass you off cs.
and try to play safe only use ignite if you can get the kill for sure otherwise wait for you jungle and ignite all in with your jungle for the kill. make sure to creep block his vladimire.png

VS

Xerath

Medium

Dodge his skill shots and you win

VS

Yasuo

Medium

This is a skill match up maybe a 6 out of 10 on the hard skill some times would be to not throw your q into his windwall and you can e his e q. you can also bait him pretty easily with your ult just stand around where you were 4 seconds ago and when he tries to eq you just ult and hit him with it.

VS

Zed

Medium
You can ekkoR.png  when he zedR.png
dodge his zedQ.png
stay away from his zedW.png
this is a lane i consider a skill match up also a good lane to run 3.png

VS

Ziggs

Medium

he can easily poke you out if you aren't careful and be careful of the times you leave lane as he can shove through towers very quickly.

Other than that just go in and out trade him off your ekkoW.png

VS

Zilean

Medium

Don't get hit by double timebomb.pngand you w in

very easy to hit your ekkoW.png

Introduction to SaintKilian Back to Top

Hey, I started playing the game in season four and started maining Ekko on release. I fell in love with the champion's play style and never stopped playing him since i started. I would consider myself a jungle main with mid and top being shortly behind that, however, since the changes in jungle have made Ekko pretty sub par I have since shifted over to maining mid lane. In season 6 I ended with 1800 Ekko games played, peaked 200 LP Masters in North America, and ended Masters. At the end of Season 6 I ended Rank 1 Ekko in the world on both Lolskill and Lolking. In season 7 I have been Challenger and will hopefully be able to end Challenger as well. This is the first guide I have sat down and wrote so I tried to be as informative as possible but it is impossible to include everything and I'm positive i forgot something, if that's the case I apologize and if you have any further questions about Ekko or want to bounce some thoughts off someone feel free to add me on league and message me there if you are in NA, tweet at me and I'll respond when I see it (@saintkilian2), or hop in my twitch when I'm streaming and ask me there! Never worry about asking questions, I have plenty myself and it's important to have your questions answered if you're serious about getting better at the game and getting better at Ekko. I hope this guide has helped you and thanks for taking the time to read this. (below is a screenshot of the season 6 standings and a screenshot of season 7 hitting challenger) :)

Rank 1 ekko in world season 6 pic 3.pngchally.png

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

The most common question i get is: how do I improve at hitting Ekko's ekkoW.png
and the obvious answer is practice, accuracy with landing w will come with the more time you spend playing the champion. once you know the cast time, animation time, and all of the delays of w by heart it will become easier to hit. Furthermore you should get into the habit of casting w when outside of vision range of the enemy to not show the initial animation and cast of your w to your enemy, you can either do this by casting just outside of their vision range or from a bush.

Another big thing is to keep in mine you can animation cancel with Ekko's ekkoQ.png and ekkoE.png
you do this by e >q > take e. you don't want to do this in every situation but it allows you to get your combo off faster and you should get comfortable with using this cancel.

How To Lane Back to Top

In most of the match ups Ekko has a weak lane phase and will always have a risk of falling behind if you get killed so first off work on not dying in lane, practice match ups and become more comfortable in them. i'd even recommend playing ekko into those really bad match ups because learning how to play from behind is what makes you a better player

Another very important thing about Ekko mid is always thinking about roam times, when you shove a wave into a turret you have a good 30 seconds where you can leave your lane and not lose any cs, you should constantly look for roam times and assisting your jungler shut down the enemy jungler and to help your other lanes. one of the things that makes Ekko so good is his roaming potential so get good at roaming.

How to Team fight Back to Top

Always keep in mind that one Ekko w can instantly win a team fight if placed properly so always look for that. Most of the time you are going to want to look to land a good w and blow up an enemy carry but you can also use your w to create a 'safe' zone for your carries to peel them as well.

My Stream Back to Top

If you want to further get advice from me or want to stop by and hang out I also stream pretty much every day at 8-9 a.m central time NA, hope to see some of you there :) https://www.twitch.tv/saintkilian
