Summoner Spells Back to Top

Flash and Ignite are your best go to spells for Fizz. Flash is great either offensively or defensively. It's another way to get over walls other than playful/trickster and it's also a great way to gap close on an enemy who might otherwise be too far away for you to combo. Ignite, in my opinion, is a must have on Fizz for two reasons. One reason is that ignite on top of seastone trident is a great way to secure early kills and snowball. Another reason I would take ignite is the fact that Fizz's seastone trident no longer has the grievous wound effect when activated, so using ignite will ensure you get your kills, even if your lane opponent pops a potion or a heal.

Masteries Back to Top

As a bursty assassin, I use 12/18/0 masteries. The keystone mastery you want is the Thunderlord's Decree. This mastery works great for fizz with the amount of burst it allows you to put out. I like to use assassin for an extra edge in laning phase and intelligence to maximize the amount of rotations you can put out. You can interchange the intelligence for precision or put a couple points into both if you want. You can also change out assassin for secret stash or runic affinity if you wish. It all comes down to your personal preference.

Fizz's Playful/Trickster is his bread and butter ability. It's a great tool for chase as well as disengage and being untargetable is extremely valuable, especially if you're the one getting focused (which you usually are). Leveling trollpole early not only gives you a ton of damage, but also a much lower cooldown on the ability, allowing you to spam it more often. The reason why I level seastone trident second over urchin strike is because the scaling was hit very hard when Fizz was nerfed. Like every other champion, put a point into chum the waters whenever you can because it scales 100% with ability power and also now makes your other abilities deal more damage if the ult hits the enemy champion.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

With the new changes, I start Dark Seal and 2 health pots off the jump. The Dark Seal is a bit of a snowball item. If you get a few kills early, which is quite easy on fizz, you can really jump ahead and do tons of damage (Thanks Phreak). Always start warding totem; This is essential for mid laners because of all the different avenues junglers can take when trying to gank you. I would only recommend this start if you're confident that you can easily beat your lane opponent.
You should try not to back until you have at least 1050g for sheen. This item is essential on Fizz and you will hit a major power spike with this item and hitting level 6.
This is another possible starting item for Fizz. This item is basically like a flask but it also gives you extra damage while active.
    The Faker start.
These items are a good safe start on Fizz. I generally use these for a lane opponent that can really punish me early.
If against an AD opponent, you could also start cloth armor and refillable potion or 2 health pots.

Core Items

By mid game, You'll want to have these three items. Ionian boots and Lich bane will give you great mobility and damage as well as CDR for chase and ganks. Zhonya's will also give you good armor and ability power and the option to make yourself untargetable on top of your playful/trickster
    General item build for Fizz.
Morellonomicon is definitely an item you want to grab either early or sometime by 25-30 minutes. Even though mana pools got buffed, You can still run out of mana really quick if you're spamming your abilities.

Situational Items

These are some other options you could use on Fizz. Abyssal scepter and Athene's unholy Grail are great items to build if their team is AP heavy. Luden's Echo is a great item to build on Fizz if you're dominating. Rylai's is a good item to build on Fizz if you need more tankiness to deal some damage in teamfights. Morello's is also a great item to build because it brings back the grievous wounds that fizz lost from his W active. These items are purely up to the player and depends on what comp you have and the other team has.

Other than the starting items and the three core items, Everything you pick could be changed around based on preferences.

VS

Ahri

Medium

A good Ahri will try to poke you down early. She's the same situation as Annie; survive her pre level 3 harass and try to outtrade her. Save trollpole for her charm and hit her with ult and you're good to go.

VS

Annie

Medium

As a skill matchup, annie can beat you. The best way to beat annie is to try not to take too much harass from her before level 3 on and then you should be able to outtrade her with ease. Level 6 is a breeze so long as you land your ult seeing as she's very immobile.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Medium

Early laning phase can be difficult, especially if he knows what he's doing. Avoid his harass from his celestial expansion. If you want to fight him, you need to either commit or quit. Avoid his stun from his Q and you should win trades easily. Be aware that his gank potential can be pretty scary with the movement speed he gains from his Q. He can pop up pretty much out of nowhere, so always be aware of that.

VS

Azir

Hard

Azir is one of Fizz's toughest lane opponents. He can zone you out with sand soldiers and gains a strong shield through his dash if he collides with you. His wall also presents some serious problems for you if you try to engage.

VS

Brand

Medium

Skill matchup. Fairly simple lane if you are any good with Fizz. Make sure to save trollpole for his ult because it will cancel it.

VS

Cassiopeia

Easy

Easy lane. She can become a problem up until level 6 because she can trade pretty well if she lands her slow on you. At level 6, engage from a distance with ult and try to position your playful/trickster behind her and dash through her with urchin strike so she has a tough time ulting you.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

This matchup has the potential to get problematic. You NEED to get ahead early or Cho'Gath will get to the point where you can not burst him down. At that point, you'll need to farm and roam or get jungler help.

VS

Diana

Hard

Definitely a tougher lane for Fizz. Her shield can absorb quite a bit of your damage. The best way to beat her out at level 6 is to wait for her shield to be on cooldown. Avoid getting hit by her Q or ult with trollpole and fight her. You should win at that point.

VS

Ekko

Medium

Before level 3, Ekko is a difficult matchup. He can really punish you with his Q if you go up to farm, so keep an eye on that and use your passive to sidestep through minions if need be. At level 3, you should be able to all in him or at least trade well. Save playful trickster for when he drops his parallel Convergence in an attempt to stun you and gain a shield. At level 6, keep track of where he will ult to; His ult deals a ton of damage, so avoid getting hit by it at all costs. Ekko deals damage based on missing health with his abilities and auto attacks like you do, so keep track of your health and his health and trade only when you have more hp or a clear advantage.

VS

Galio

Medium

Wait for his shield to be on cooldown. Try not to teamfight against him with his ult up. He can bring a lot more damage to team fights than you can.

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

Very easy lane. Like all other mages, avoid his poke and punish him at level 3 when he gets close. You can all in him at level 3 or wait until level 6 if you want to be safe.

VS

Karma

Medium

Not a mid that most people choose but it is still possible. Avoid getting locked down and wait for her to blow her ultimate enhanced Q ability and go in on her. Take into account that she does have a shield which can also give her good chase.

VS

Karthus

Easy

One of the easiest lanes for Fizz. Very immobile target and easy to land ult on. Save playful/trickster for his ult and you're good to go. Expect lots of jungler help because of kit counter.

VS

Kassadin

Easy

another pretty easy lane for Fizz. Every time he comes up to get CS, duel him. Make sure you don't miss out on farm if you wanna be aggressive. Wait for him to teleport with his ult before trying to engage on him with chum the waters.

VS

Katarina

Easy

Yet another easy lane for Fizz. She can try to outsustain because she is a manaless champion. You can trade effectively with her at level 3 and level 6 is a breeze if you don't manage to kill her by then. Expect jungler help in this lane matchup.

VS

Kayle

Medium

This is a tougher lane for Fizz. It comes down to a skill matchup. She can poke you early with her E. keep your distance and try to farm as best you can. If you can all in her before 6, go for it. At level 6, you'll need to get her to the point where she will use her ult and then you can use yours without any problems. If you do ult her, keep in mind that if she ults herself to take no damage, she will still have the debuffs from your ult (extra damage and slow).

VS

Kennen

Easy

Generally an easy lane. Avoid his poke as best you can. His auto attack range is quite small, so if he does get close enough to do so, urchin strike into him and combo him.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

Leblanc is very mobile like Fizz, so she will be much tougher to take on than most lane opponents. Try to wait for her to either Q and ult her Q again or likewise for her W and then go in on her. When her dash is on cooldown, she is extremely vulnerable. Wait to ult her until that point.

VS

Lissandra

Hard

The most difficult lane matchup for Fizz. If she knows what she is doing at all, you will have a very difficult time winning this lane. Wait for jungler help or rush level 3 as fast as you can and try to all in her. Roaming can also be effective if you push lane to her tower or if you see her go back to base.

VS

Lux

Medium

Skill matchup. Generally Fizz has the advantage over lux as long as he doesn't playful/trickster before she tries to bind. Take her shield into account when you try to take her down.

VS

Malzahar

Medium

Another skill lane matchup for Fizz. His malefic visions can be very punishing if you get too close to the minion wave when it kills a minion near you. like laning against cassiopeia, it is best to engage from a distance with your ultimate, trollpole as your ult latches, and 14.png him while in the air. If you can pull off auto attacking him with seastone trident and urchin striking him before he tries to suppress you, then you should have no problem winning the fight at all.

VS

Mordekaiser

Hard

another tough matchup for fizz, The second you get close enough to use any abilities on him, he will have his shield up by either using abilities on you or your minion waves. It is best to either rush level 3 without taking too much harass or wait on your jungler to gank for you. Morde is very vulnerable to ganks due to his extreme lack of mobility.

VS

Morgana

Medium

This lane can be an issue since morgana has a way to make your CC useless with her black shield. Try to damage her a bit with urchin strike or seastone trident to get her to use her shield, you can all in her at that point. She won't have the damage reduction nor will she have the ability to ignore your CC.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

Easy lane. Hide behind minions to keep her from landing her spears. Your passive can also help you to get through minions quickly if she does decide to hurl a spear at you. If you get hit by either her spear or traps, keep your distance because she will try to initiate with cougar form, which has high burst damage.

VS

Orianna

Medium

Skill matchup. She does have shields which can make trading difficult. Ori is very mana hungry so try to get her to spam spells to damage you and save your playful/trickster for her ult and you can win duels very easily.

VS

Rumble

Easy

I have to add this opponent thanks to rumblemidgg. If you do encounter a rumble in mid, he is very easy to beat. Wait for him to use his Q to try and do some damage and harass you. When it's on cooldown, go in on him and you should come out on top provided he gets no jungler help early. You'll definitely need to beat him early because of sustain and also because he can get pretty tanky much like Cho'Gath.

VS

Ryze

Medium

Semi-tough opponent for Fizz. Avoid getting locked down by him and engage from outside his range at level 6 and you should have an easy time with him.

VS

Swain

Medium

Semi-difficult matchup for Fizz. Avoid his torment at early levels because the damage can be pretty unforgiving. Save your playful/trickster for when he tries to nevermove you. Morellonomicon can be very useful for fighting him due to the fact that seastone trident lost it's grievous wounds debuff.

VS

Syndra

Easy

Very easy lane for Fizz. Save trollpole for her ult and you can cancel her ult and put it on cooldown. Avoid getting stunned and you should have no problem winning lane.

VS

Talon

Medium

Talon can be tricky for Fizz. Rush a seeker's armguard and avoid using chum the waters until he has ulted. Talon can be difficult to lockdown if he hasn't used cutthroat.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

Easiest lane matchup in the game for Fizz. He has very little mobility, and the only CC he has (stun, slow) can be dodged by a well timed playful/trickster. Always push out his lane and ward often. Call when he is missing right away because his roam and ganks are very strong. Pushing him to his tower either ensures that he stays there to hold or he loses a tower in order to gank.

VS

Veigar

Medium

Can be a problem for Fizz if he can land his stun on you. It has become easier since his stun was slightly nerfed (small window before stun comes down). Try to save playful/trickster for his ult that can basically nuke you in one shot.

VS

Vel'Koz

Easy

Another very easy lane for Fizz. You generally will not see him often due to him being in the support meta more often than mid. If you do encounter him in lane, avoid his knock up and engage with ult. If you can, wait until he tries to ult because then you can ult and interrupt him and playful trickster into him and bring him down.

VS

Viktor

Medium

Viktor can be a tough matchup for Fizz. his Q and E can help him trade well with you and his aoe stun can present some serious problems for you in duels. Avoid the stun and you should be good to go.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

Vlad has a great way to outsustain you through his Q ability and spellvamp. His ult is hard to dodge and he has a way to dodge your ult. Wait for his trollpool to be on cooldown and then engage on him and you should be able to win fights against him.

VS

Xerath

Easy

Easy lane. Very low mobility. His only strength is his ability to poke and harass you at early levels. You can go in at level 3 or play it safe until level 6 and fight him then. It would be wise to kill him and put him behind at level 3 if you can because the longer you wait to kill xerath, the higher the chance of getting ganked or poked down.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Hard lane early but at level 3, you should be able to win trades pretty easily. Try to open up with urchin strike to pop his shield if he has it ready. Wait for his wind wall to be on cooldown before throwing your shark because he can use it to keep the shark from latching on to him.

VS

Zed

Medium

Very difficult lane early because of his passive and his AD. Your passive helps you to shrug off some of his damage but prolonged fights at early levels will go in his favor. Rush a sheen and armguard. Do NOT use playful/trickster until he uses his ult to mark you. By using playful/trickster when he ults, you can cancel it and also put it on cooldown, thus removing any kill potential he may have had.

VS

Ziggs

Easy

Easy lane for Fizz. Ziggs does have poke but it becomes irrelevant from level 3 and on. all in him at level 3 if he gets too close.

VS

Zyra

Easy

Another easy lane for Fizz. Avoid poke from her plants as their base damage is quite high. Zyra lane is the same as lux lane in the sense that you need to make sure you don't get locked down by her and you should win out in fights.
