Summoner Spells Back to Top

If you build AP I would never recommend not taking Flash, it's super important for AP Fizz in lategame. However, Tank Fizz can get away with Ignite+TP combo especially if you max W first.

Fizz has pretty good TP ganks because of his high mobility so TP is very nice to have. In some matchups you also really need to have it to TP back into lane early due to getting poked so hard.

Masteries Back to Top

Fervor is important for this build, Fervor is one of the main reasons why tank build on Fizz even works. Fizz can stack Fervor super fast because his Q gives double stacks and the dot on his W gives stacks. He is also excellent in just autoattacking enemy champion in general with his dashes and strong slows.

I've seen some people use Grasp, but don't do that. If you take Grasp you not only lose Fervor but also the other damage masteries from Ferocity/Cunning trees and you will have problems in just dealing enough damage in teamfights to not get ignored by the enemies.

Whether to take 18-0-12 or 18-12-0 is a matter of preference, both of them are good. Especially the insight mastery on Resolve tree is great.

The reason I take Bounty Hunter over Oppressor is because of W maxing really. You can still definitely take Oppressor though, doesn't matter much.

I use Sorcery over Fury because Sorcery is a pretty beastly master. Fury is rarely used except for super autoattack focused champions like AD carries. Sorcery on the other hand increases your damage to minions which is important and scales nicely to lategame.

Maxing W first for top lane Tank Fizz is great especially if you take Ignite instead of Flash. In most trades the E ability is not even used for dealing damage, maybe not even used at all. You deal damage with your W+Fervor-empowered autoattacks and attackspeed runes.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Starting item
Buy after first back usually (can be skipped)
Buy this item first vs Physical dmg laner
Either buy this item first vs magic dmg laner, or Spectres cowl into Sunfire.
First item vs tanks to counter their early magic resistance purchases (sheen deals physical dmg)

Core Items

    example build vs Physical damage
    example build vs Magic damage
CDR boots are usually the best but these are all great options. Make sure to not go over 40% CDR if you buy CDR boots

Situational Items

As a 6th item I usually buy one of these, most often Steraks. Deadmans is great if you need more armor and Randuins if there are a lot of autoattacks on the enemy team. If the enemy team is full AD you might even need all of the armor items mentioned.

Spirit Visage is a better item than Abyssal, but Spirit Visage as a first item is awful, it doesn't give trading power in the same way that a Sunfire cape does. So if you need an MR item early get Abyssal, if you need an MR item later get Spirit Visage.

Sunfire and Iceborn are core items, I have both of them on every match.

Steraks is better than what it sounds, AD is actually a good stat for tank Fizz, you are autoattacking all of the time.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Ignite has crazy value. Very easy matchup, dodge his cleaver with E if he tries to escape from your all-in

VS

Ekko

Medium

He is much stronger than you in the first levels but meh, almost everything is. After level 4 or 5 you should look for trades, he will try to dodge your E with his E so try to predict it and E-E to the location where he will dodge.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Ignite is important here since her healing is great.

She outduels a tank Fizz in lategame so stopping her from splitpushing can be hard, but in earlygame/laning phase Fizz is much stronger in trades and all-ins.

VS

Galio

Easy

Very easy, these guys like to take high MR setups but just buy Sheen early and all-in him with Q, you easily outdamage his healing

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Very easy lane but his level1 is mega strong so try to wait for level3-4 at least before you trade with him. Avoid Q:ing in when his Passive is ready.

VS

Gnar

Easy

Pretty easy matchup, when he is in ranged form trade with him by Q:ing to a minion and then using E-E to get in range of him. Its surprisingly easy because his jump has a really low range.

When he is in megaform you can easily win all-ins if you have ignite.

VS

Gragas

Easy

Fizz is great against tanks, very easy matchup

VS

Graves

Easy

Having ignite just removes any chance he would have at doing anything in lane. He can't escape from your ulti all-ins but because of the reduced healing he can't fight back either.

VS

Irelia

Easy

This matchup is actually not difficult at all. Her all-ins are strong but you can do short trades with her, for example q+w autoattack and then E out. Then once you get a health lead you can all-in for the kills.

VS

Kayle

Easy

In the mid lane as an AP Fizz with E max this matchup is super hard. But in the long top lane with a tank build and W max it's a really easy matchup. She barely gets any value out of her ult, she can negate the shark part of your ult (not the debuff) and that's not much.

VS

Lulu

Easy

Very easy matchup, top lane is a long lane and she doesn't have any dashes so your all-ins are massively strong. You can easily outdamage her ultimate in 1v1.

VS

Malphite

Easy

The attackspeed slow honestly isn't too bad for Fizz - it's only 3 seconds and Fizz's allins are longer especially in the top lane. You can definitely try to dodge the landslide.png by trying to predict when he will use it, but not with reflexes, it's too fast for that.

VS

Maokai

Easy

My favorite matchup, probably the easiest matchup in the game. There's very little that a Maokai can do, you can constantly all in him and your W will melt his HP:s.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

Very easy, he is just like any other tank. You can dodge his nautilusgrandline.png with your E so it's a pretty damn unfair matchup! Don't use your E stupidly because of this.

VS

Pantheon

Easy

This might sound like a hard matchup, but I play a fair bit of Pantheon and I can tell you that tank Fizz counters him. Pantheon is extremely weak against getting all-inned from full HP, he is strong at poking but awful in full HP all-ins.

Play levels 1-5 very carefully in this matchup, all-in him with ultimate.

VS

Riven

Easy

Fizz has almost as good mobility as Riven, when you combine that with his slows, she can't escape from Fizz as easily as she can escape from other champs. Play mega passively the early levels and start trading preferably around level 4 or 5, you can at level 3 though if she makes a mistake for example uses her shield stupidly.

VS

Ryze

Medium

Similar to Swain - his all-in power is strong. Ryze also scales pretty well to mid game, even with just farm. The one big weakness that Ryze top has is that he is massively weak against getting turret dove from full HP. Fizz is really good at abusing this as W max Fizz is the king of turret dives.

VS

Swain

Medium

His all-inning power is really good past level6 and he can poke hard, but if you have Ignite he can never win an all-in, just pick your fights carefully, don't try to kill him if he has even a bit more HP than you.

In all-ins, never use your E. He can't then use his W either because you can just dodge it with E. In a normal fight to the death, none of those abilities are used.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Literally don't take a single cs in the first 2 levels. Just try to survive to level3 without taking any damage. The only point in the game when Yasuo has a chance at fighting tank Fizz are the first 2 or 3 levels. Every level and item after that it gets easier and easier for Fizz.

Matchups explained Back to Top

The difficulty rating of all matchups are easy to medium, none of them being hard because tank Fizz is a pretty damn beasty laner and an excellent blind pick. The only champions who really counter him are almost never played in the top lane. Examples of such champions would be Olaf and Tryndamere, they can heavily abuse Fizz in the very early levels when he is the weakest, but they are still very strong in all-ins all throughout the laning phase.

All tanks are easy matchups, Fizz is great against tanks. Fizz's damage in early game is very mixed - abilities deal Magic damage but Autoattacks, Fervor and Sheen deal physical damage, so the enemy only gets half of the value from his resistance purchases. On the other hand Fizz's W deals %maxHP damage so buying HP is even worse vs Fizz.

Why play Top lane tank Fizz? Back to Top

Pros

-Highest kill potential in lane out of all tanks.
-Very strong early game, still strong mid game and decent lategame. Never really falls off.
-Hard counter to all tanks in lane.
-Super strong blind pick: he isn't really countered by anything, and early picking a top lane Fizz can bait the enemy teams mid laner into counter picking him for mid.
-Very safe from ganks due to excellent escape mechanism.
-One of the strongest turret divers in the game, diving your lane opponent from full HP has a high chance of making them tilt hard.
-Very strong against getting kited in fights.
-Fits in nearly every team comp in solo-q. How often do you hear the words "oh, I wish we had something else in the top lane than a magic damage dealing tank!".

Cons
-Level 1.
-Level 2.
-Nothing else.

Mid game and Late game Back to Top

Tank Fizz's role in mid and lategame teamfights is very simple, you try to make everyone focus you and create a frontline for your team by zoning the enemies. Be the first one of your team to die, but deal as much damage as possible before you do. If you can get the ultimate to an enemy carry it's great, but often you can't because you don't have a flash and as a tank you can't join fights late. The best targets for using your ultimate to are usually bruisers and assassins who are diving your backline, for example Nocturne, Zed, Irelia etc.

If your teammates die before you in teamfights due to you being so tanky, instead of buying damage items I would rather recommend to dive their backline harder and force your way to their carries, if you manage to get in range to autoattack the enemy ADC, their team can not ignore you, they must focus you first. Do what ever it takes to die first, tank Fizz is super tanky and disruptive.

Most important thing about Fizz Back to Top

DON'T TAKE EVERY CS IN LEVELS 1 AND 2. Only take the creeps that your opponent gives to you, if he doesn't give any, don't take any. Fizz is one of the very few champions in the game who has no ranged ability for CS:ing from a distance. The champions biggest weakness is not getting farm in the first levels due to getting poked, but for Fizz it's much better to save HP than trade HP for last hits. Fizz's level 3 is beastly, he can out trade most champions by then and zone the enemy from taking last hits by not letting him come to your Q range. However, his level 3 is of course weak if you have no HP left due to losing it all in the first 2 levels.

Patch 6.12 nerfs Back to Top

txMVbBA.png

Meh not a big nerf for tank Fizz. He is still really good. Don't change anything about the build or setup. You can still own really hard with Fizzerino!
