Summoner Spells Back to Top

For summoner spells on 105.png you always want to run either 4.png14.png or 4.png12.png. You can choose ignite over teleport if you need that little bit of extra dueling power, but if you're confident in your laning as 105.png, you can choose teleport. The biggest con teleport brings is the possibility to go for heavy early trades, since if you time your back right soon after your trade, you can TP back into lane and keep constant pressure on the opposing laner. During the late game you can run a splitpush 105.png build, which consists of Lich Bane. If you're going with 12.png, you can easily get into teamfights, while getting turrets down fairly easily.

14.png however gives you that extra bit of dueling power in lane, which can help you secure an easy first blood, and overall greatly helps in matchups like 8.png or 50.png4.png is probably the key summoner, since it helps with your overall slipperiness, you can pull of nice E+4.png combo's, and when you go all in as 105.png, you'll find your only escape mostly being your 4.png.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

For masteries, your keystone should always be Thunderlord's, simply because it's easy to proc with a Q+W, and it helps you burst your opponent down. In the Ferocity tree, Sorcery is a must have, then you can choose between Double Edged Sword and Feast. Feast gives you a little bit more safety in lane, where as Double Edged Sword gives you more damage overall. Always choose Natural Talent over Vampirism, since the flat stats are way more of value than the 2% spell vamp. You can then again choose between Bounty Hunter and Oppressor. Especially if you roam a lot, you'll get at least a 3% bonus around level 6, where you should be able to pick up some kills across the board. If you want a safer style of laning/playing, you can opt for Oppressor instead.

In the Cunning tree, you'll mostly be last hitting with your abilities after level 6, so unless you're actually unable to last hit without Savagery, you should choose Wanderer for more roaming potential, and a quicker return to lane. Since you'll most likely start a Corrupting Potion, you won't need the Biscuits, which gives you the option to pick Assassin, which again speaks for itsself. Both Merciless and Dangerous Game benefit you in combat, and Intelligence gives you the ability to reach 45% CDR, which is also rather important on 105.png

For abilities, you'll probably see a lot of people starting with E. I'll quickly break down why W is mostly a better choice, and will go into the rest of the leveling order. As 105.png, you'll find yourself almost always getting pushed into your turret. Often you'll have to sacrifice a little bit of CS to actually keep a steady amount of health. Since you're most likely not going to E into a wave, and especially not use your E to trade on level 1, since if you engage with it you'll find yourself with no way out, and your opponent has a free time hitting you right after you come down, there's no use starting E. Instead, let your laner push you back, try to get the wave under your turret and safely farm with your W active. Your E also costs a lot of mana, so using it for no reason makes your laning a lot more difficult. On level 2, getting your E is the best choice, and you can even start looking for trades if the matchup isn't too bad. The smartest thing though, is to wait for level 3, since that's where 105.png's biggest powerspike comes into play. With all your abilities unlocked, you're stronger than most, if not any other midlaner at level 3, and you should look for engages with your Corrupting Potion.

Always max your E, since it's your biggest damage source, and also your waveclear. Besides, you need it on low cooldown, since it's, apart from 4.png, the only reliable escape you have. After your maxed E, maxing W gives you the most damage. Since maxing Q doesn't decrease the cooldown, you're best off maxing W second, and Q last. Obviously, level up your ultimate whenever you can.

Starting Items

Core Items

Situational Items

As for a build, there's a lot of 105.png mains that have different opinions on what to build, especially as a first item. For starting items, you want to start with a 2033.png, since that will give you a bit of sustain and a bit of dueling powr in lane. When you're on your first back, try getting a 3108.png. If you don't have enough money, settle for a 1082.png and a Pink Ward, since 1082.png will help you snowball harder in lane, and boosts your 2033.png's healing too. Personally, I think 3165.png is a great first pick up for 105.png, which is why you want to get the 3108.png first. 3165.png has a great build path, gives 100AP, 20% CDR, 400 Mana, a mana restore passive that returns 10% of your mana on a kill or assist, and Grievous Wounds. If you're not a fan of 3165.png, you can either rush an 3001.png or a 3191.png, depending on AP/AD matchups/team compositions. If you're up against a heavy AP team, you should get your 3001.png first, followed by a 3157.png, which will give you durability in fights. (If you're not building 3165.png, you want to get 3158.png somewhere inbetween to actually reach the 45% CDR.) As your next item, if you want to duel people and splitpush, which is highly preferred by me, get a 3100.png. That will give you a lot of dueling power and lets you chunk turrets. Finally, finish your build with a 3089.png and a 3135.png for some more damage. Your finaly build will be looking something like this: 1. 3165.png3020.png3157.png3100.png3089.png3135.png

2. 3001.png3158.png3157.png3100.png3089.png3135.png

VS

Ahri

Medium

Trade with her whenever she used her Q, you should be able to dodge her charm based on reacting to the animation. Late game you'll always be able to fight her 1v1.

VS

Anivia

Easy

Make sure to either dodge her E+R combo, or her stun. If you jump over her R+E you'll deny a lot of her burst, and getting stunned after isn't bad if Anivia has no follow-up. In lane, always go for the stun dodge, since that'd the start of her combo pre-6.

VS

Annie

Easy

Annie will most likely keep farming in lane, try to keep up in CS, trade if you see an opening. If she tries to Q you in lane, quickly E onto her and keep fighting her. When her Q is on cooldown you'll be way stronger. All-ins should be yours, be aware of the Tibbers after her death.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy

His stun is really easy to dodge, and whenever you Q onto him he can't hit you at all. Always go for trades at level 3 and onwards, since you'll probably win them all. Easy snowball target, he can't do much against you at all.

VS

Azir

Medium

The laning phase can be a little tricky, since you'll get poked out pretty heavily, but when you reach 6 and Azir uses his Q, immediately Q through a minion to get in range for an ult. If you see him cast his ult, simply jump over it, you'll win any all in. Survive lane, and start fighting him.

VS

Brand

Medium

He'll bug you a lot with harrass in lane, but after level 6 he's a sitting duck, a classic immobile midlaner, that won't stand a chance when you engage on him. Tough lane pre-6, except if you're able to dodge his Q easily. After 6 should be all yours.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Tricky matchup that will require you to play safe and don't try to trade. Cassio's Q outranges yours, and your best bet is to wait for her to step into your Q range. If you're able to Q onto her pre-6, you'll win the trade. If not, keep farming and engage on her when you're level 6. As long as you don't get hit by her ult, she won't stand a chance.

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

Tough matchup that you need to play a few times to actually get a good grip on. The laning phase will be heavily in his favor, but you can catch him off-guard at level 6, where Cho isn't tanky yet and you'll have a lot of burst. This matchup will get easier the more you play it, try to splitpush a lot, so Cho will have to rotate with you.

VS

Diana

Hard

As mentioned in the article.

VS

Ekko

Medium

More of a skill matchup really. You can either make or break the lane, depending on how well you anticipate Ekko's abilities and are able to deal with them. Fights are pretty even, so try to take short trades and retreat before Ekko's shield/stun come into play.

VS

LeBlanc

Medium

The level 2 is probably the most tough one of them all. Try to give LeBlanc some space, since her level 2 damage is way higher and more reliable than yours, so you won't want to trade with her just yet. At level 3, when she goes for a Q+W, make sure you start casting your E when she's about to W, so you'll land the splash damage on her no matter if she goes back or not. After 6 you should be able to win a 1v1, as long as you hit your ult.

VS

Lissandra

Hard

Also mentioned in the article.

VS

Malzahar

Hard

Also a rather tough one, would not recommend.

VS

Morgana

Hard

Don't you love being locked down for ages as Fizz?

VS

Orianna

Medium

The laning phase is here again the most tricky. Try not to trade with her too much, even at level 3. She'll most likely win a trade if she plays it well. Call your jungler for help and keep farming until level 6, where you'll definitely win a 1v1 when you dodge her ult.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

Let Twisted Fate push you in, and don't go for trades up until level 3. If he steps too far forward, Q onto him and start hitting him. It's really obvious when he's about to stun you, so you should always be able to dodge it fairly easily. He'll outroam you though, so make sure to warn your team and always try to pressure mid, to make TF stay in lane or at least trade a turret in return. 1v1's are fairly easy vs TF, even if he engages on you you can easily counter it.

VS

Viktor

Medium

Viktor has a pretty weak laning pre-6, so definitely try to go for a fight at level 3. You'll most likely outdamage him, especially if you don't get stunned by his gravity field. After 6, and with his first hex-core upgrade, Viktor gets pretty strong. Since he's a stronger teamfighter than you, start roaming/splitpushing and let Viktor answer you. You'll be stronger in 1v1's, and a Viktor outside of a teamfight is way less scary.

VS

Xerath

Easy

Your power>His power

VS

Zed

Easy

This one can be called either medium or easy, but if you play it a few times you'll start to learn how to easily beat Zed. When you see him throw out his shadow in lane, don't panic but simply immediately E backwards. He'll waste his W, E and Q, and since your E has a lower cooldown than his W, you can go for a trade as soon as it's up. As for after level 6, when Zed death marks you, and this is where you just need experience, you should always be able to dodge it with your E, which makes 1v1's always go in your favor. Play this matchup a few times and you'll master it in no time.

VS

Ziggs

Easy

No trouble killing the bomb guy!

Tough Matchups Back to Top

In contrary to popular belief, 105.png actually has a fair bit of matchups he struggles against. People that keep him busy and unable to fight in lane are tough matchups for him. 25.png For example, will always push out the wave as quickly as she can. When you want to engage on her she'll simply bind you when you get in range for your Q, and you'll be stuck farming under the turret for a big part of the game, while she has a lot of map pressure. Try taking 12.png in this matchup, since you'll want to grab as much CS as you can, while still maintaining your own pressure around the map.

90.pngIs another one of those pesky mages that will keep the lane pushed, and give 105.png no chance to fight. Especially lategame, you'll find yourself getting held in place with his ult, while you fall prey to his teammates. Your best chance here is to take 12.png and try to splitpush. With an Abyssal Scepter, you should be able to fight him one on one lategame, but in teamfights he'll easily pin you down and make you an easy target. In laning phase, try to keep up in CS. 90.png is very immobile, so your jungler should be able to help you out, especially after 6 where you can lock him down with your ultimate.

131.png is also a matchup you'd rather avoid. In the early game she can outtrade you with her shield, while also outpoking you with her Q. At level 6, it's more of a skill matchup with whoever hits most abilities and gets his burst down first often winning the duel. Be aware though, 131.png will scale better, and be able to surprise you with more, and especially reliable burst lategame. Try to keep up in CS, and try avoiding trades if possible. Again, Diana is also not very mobile, so try to abuse that by getting your jungler to help you out. Even if you hit your ult in a 1v1, at any point in the game it will be a very close situation, since 131.png's burst goes off way quicker than yours, and you'll have to dodge at least one of her abilities to have a chance. I recommend taking 14.png in this matchup, since she can easily answer your splitpush, and ignite might just give you the edge in a 1v1 in lane.

Finally, 127.png is a very tough, but highly underestimated matchup for the fish. Whenever you try to trade with your Q, she'll instantly W and throw a full combo your way, also potentially dodging your E with hers right after. Her ult is a great way to lock you down in fights, where as she can also use it on herself if you decide to ult her. Versus Lissandra, try to avoid taking harrass in lane, and trade when she used one of her abilities to push the lane. If she has an ability down, you'll always win the trade, especially if she used her W on minions. 14.png is a nice pickup to counter the healing on her ultimate, and give you an edge in 1v1's, both in laning and later in the game. Your best bet is to go splitpushing and try to fight her. Engage fights without using your ultimate, if she starts getting low, she'll have to either ult you or herself, and right after that you want to use your ultimate and finish her off, since your initial burst (Without either of you using ult) is definitely higher than hers.

Easy Matchups and conclusion Back to Top

The easier matchups can be defined way quicker. They mostly consist of immobile mages, with skillshot based CC that you should be able to dodge fairly easily. A good example of this would be 101.png. He'll get to poke you a fair bit in lane, but once you reach 6 he's a sitting duck, and there's no way he'll ever win an all-in against you. Definitely take 14.png in this matchup, since you can highly abuse him and snowball fairly easily. As long as you don't get hit by his stun, trades should almost always go your way. If you're having trouble in lane, your jungler can be used to punish him for his immobility.

Every similar matchup, things like 134.png34.png115.png should all go your way, as long as you make sure to dodge the bit of CC they have. 105.png is very good at punishing immobile lane opponents that can't lock him down, and you should definitely pick him against those type of champions.

There's a lot of matchups I obviously didn't cover, but in my opinion every matchup not listed with the Tough Matchups should be winnable purely by skill. The only matchup that's rather impossible is 3.png, but he sees so little play he's hardly worth mentioning.

I tried giving a short note for a lot of other matchups, but I didn't feel like some matchups were relevant, since there's a fair bit of mids that hardly see any play. If you have any question regarding a specific matchup/build/anything AP Fizz related, feel free to ask! Hopefully this guide was useful, and good luck playing the fish we all know and love!
