Summoner Spells Back to Top

Toplane Summoner Spells, Offensive Playstyle, and Global Pressure.

In this section, I plan to discuss the best summoner spells for Gangplank, what it means to have an Offensive playstyle, and how Gangplank has unique global pressure.

4.png is the most-used summoner spell to date, for good reason. Gangplank's escape isn't super great. His kit only offers him a CC cleanse and a few movement speed boosts. Flash will help you escape, pick up kills or make plays.

12.pngDefensive vs. Offensive14.png

I define a defensive playstyle as one in which a player does not initiate fights, and focuses on farming or objectives. An offensive playstyle would be one in which a player tries to start fights, kill their opponent or deny farming.

Generally, champs such as 92.png or 114.png will be offensive and take ignite. They exchange global pressure and anti-seige for a better chance of killing their opponent.

Champs like 54.png or 36.png however, will generally take Teleport to better defend their tower, or set up oppurtunities to secure global objectives. The drawback is they have less potential to kill their opponent.

41.png is pretty unique, as he can utilize either of these spells effectively. Take either that you wish against your opponent and judging by your team.

A Gangplank with Ignite is a significant early game / true damage threat. He can afford to take Ignite because of his global ultimate, which allows him to make an impact from anywhere on the map.

41_64.png is a super duper awesome champ.

Gangplank's new kit is very fun, engaging and powerful to play. With his high-damage passive, Q and E, Gangplank is a very powerful damage-heavy toplane pick, who could probably even go midlane.

Gangplank's Passive is Trial By Fire. Gangplank's next melee attack will deal bonus true damage based on a base amount, Gangplank's level and (+1.2 Bonus AD.) Additionally, Gangplank will gain 30% bonus movement speed for 2 seconds. This can only be activated once every few seconds, and the movement speed bonus can be activated by destroying a Powder Keg.

Gangplank's bread and butter, most useful damage tool is his Parrrley. Gangplank draws his pistol and shoots target enemy, dealing physical damage (+1.0 AD) and applying on-hit effects (excludes Trial by Fire). Red Buff, Armor Penetration, 3035_32.png,  3057_32.png3742.png,and many other items will also activate. Gangplank's Q can critically strike, and upon killing an enemy, will refund half of the mana cost, give bonus gold, and will award Gangplank Silver Serpents. Also, It should be noted that 3087_32.png3074_32.png3025_32.png will give you extra mana and gold return if you last hit multiple targets with their AoE. Last hitting with your Q is the most important thing to do in lane, it will allow you to keep your mana up and gain a gold lead. Maxing this first will be the best increase in damage, and will give you extra gold gain. Your Power Keg ability will also apply the effects from your Q attack, making damage from things like 3078_32.png into an AoE blast!

Gangplank's W is Remove Scurvy. Gangplank eats oranges; any and all crowd control effects will be cleared from Gangplank, and he will be healed for a base amount, (+15% Missing Health) (+0.9 AP). Gangplank can use this ability at all times through any CC, even when Suppressed, Silenced or Stunned. This is the only ABILITY that can break a suppress. He can use it while knocked up, but he will not be able to move like normal until landing. Ignite, Grievous Wounds, Various Mark Abilities (such as 238_64.png Ultimate), True Vision effects, and most Damage Over Time effects will not be cleared.

(Note: 3140_32.png and its items can also clear Suppressions. 1.png, however, cannot.)
( Note: The Suppression from 90_64.png Ultimate will be negated, but the damage will not unless the Tether is broken.)

Gangplank's E is Powder Keg. Gangplank is given charges of Barrels, with a cap dependent on his ultimate's rank. Upon activation, Gangplank will throw out a targetable Barrel into target location. Gangplank and his enemies may attack Barrels. If an enemy gets the last hit, they will be given 10 gold. If Gangplank does, the barrel will explode, dealing AoE physical damage of the Attack itself, 60% Armor Penetration and Bonus damage to enemy champions. while also applying a slow. The explosion of one Keg will also activate nearby Kegs, with nonstacking damage, but a larger AoE. Gangplank will also be awarded the movement speed bonus from Trial by Fire.

Gangplank's Ultimate is Cannon Barrage. This is one of the few actual global ultimates left in the game. Gangplank targets anywhere on the map and calls for his ship, the Dead Pool to rain cannonballs in a ground AOE for 8 seconds. Cannon balls will barrage the area of effect, dealing damage (+0.1 AP) and slowing enemies. Gangplank's ultimate can be upgraded through the use of Silver Serpents. There are 3 available upgrades:

Death's Daughter will fire an intial, larger cannonball in the center of the AoE, dealing a large amount of true damage.

Raise Morale will act like the old Raise Morale, speeding up allied units therein by 30%, including Gangplank.

Fire At Will will fire an additional six waves of cannon barrage. This will increase the damage and rate of fire.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Try for this first back
    Standard start for jungle
    Aggressive start
    Passive start
    Sustain heavy lane
Against super heavy AD (Zed or Pantheon)

Core Items

This is a good build for utilizing your Parrrley's on-hit effects. This build allows you to get in the fray and deal sustained damage. However, it doesn't have much synergy with Gangplank's barrels.
I absolutely love this item. However, I prioritize Ravenous Hydra for the Health Regeneration given, and more effective AoE lifesteal. If you find yourself against very high HP or dueling a lot more than teamfighting, this would be worth the purchase.
If I had room in my final build, I would include this. If you are on an already tanky team, and the enemies have armor stacking, replace Frozen Mallet with this. This will make you more damage oriented, but less of a utility-having brickwall
Replace Sunfire Cape with this if against AA-heavy enemies
This item will deal a ton of damage with Barrels, but is risky as it gives no defensive stats. If your team has a dedicated tank already, this is a good item

Situational Items

This is another completed build more tank oriented.
If your team needs damage late game
Gangplank looks awkwardly big with this. But it's good if you find yourself against a lot of CC and slows.
This item is very good for Gangplank. Health, AD, CDR and Armor Pen are awesome. Look in the notes below for a build that incorporates this.

Starting Out

In most matchups, I'm confident in my ability and go for a 1055_32.png. However, there are many situations in which I will start differently. For example, against a heavy AD champion like 114_64.png or 80_64.png, I will opt for 1029_32.png and 5x2003_32.png. Or, against a 24_64.png  I will go 2041_32.png, as Jax is very weak once he has no mana. Find out your own comfort with certain starts against certain champions.

Specific Items, Builds and Thoughts

3078_32.png is the best item in the shop for Gangplank to build. He benefits from every single stat that it gives, and the two passives benefit him greatly. His Parrrley will proc the sheen damage as well as the rage passive, making him a great chaser and very mobile. He also benefits from the Attack Speed, Crit, Health, Mana, AD and even AP.

3022_32.png aids the 3078_32.png. It will put yet another slow on your basic attacks and Parrrley, making Gangplank a lethal chaser with a slow + speed boost combo. The health and AD are also very helpful.

Consider switching to 3153_32.pngif you need more single-target damage. This will make you a better chaser than the Ravenous Hydra, but at the expense of AD and Health Regen. It is also alot better against HP stacking toplaners such as 36_64.png.

3102_32.png is pretty situational. While it gives more health than the 3065_32.png, it lacks cooldown reduction and the bonus healing effects. I would say take this item if you are against a 17_64.png/7_64.png. Lifesteal will be less effective without a Visage, so I would consider taking a 3035_32.png over 3074_32.png.

Alternate Builds

1. Dive-Plank

This build came about after the new Black Cleaver change. After much theory crafting, I came up with a build comparable to the effectiveness of my classic Trinity Force build. However, this one is more damage oriented and works towards item strengths, instead of Gangplank's strengths.
3071_32.png3111_32.png3153_32.png3143_32.png3102_32.png3025_32.png
With this build, you get plenty of armor, MR and Health. The Black Cleaver and BotRK combo is great. These let you stick onto targets, and the other items allow you to survive and prevent kiting. Instead of my original build, this provides a lot more auto-attack damage and kill potential. What it lacks in utility, it makes up for in damage.

2. AP Gangplank

AP Gangplank is a cheese strat like no other. Similar to old AP Yi, the healing can be outrageous. Gangplank's W scales 1 to 1 with AP, and his Ult scales 20% with AP. Alongside that, his Q will have onhit effects of Sheen Items. As of right now, Runeglaive and Luden's Echo work together.
3020_32.png3708_32.png3285_32.png3157_32.png3151_32.png3089_32.png
With this build, you get magic penetration, Zhonya's and a lot of AoE magic damage. His ultimate attack will proc Luden's Echo from across the map, and also cause the burning damage of Liandrie's Torment.
You get a ton of healing from the AP provided in this build.
His Q will activate Runeglaive and Luden's echo, making a huge amount of AoE magic damage for waveclearing or teamfight. It should be noted that Runeglaive damage CAN critically strike. If you want to get even more off-meta, one could take 3087_32.png for huge AoE magic damage crits.

3. Tankplank

Tankplank was great with the old Warmog's Armor and Atma's Impaler. It's not what it used to be, but Gangplank's unique ability to clear CC makes him a worthy tank, as his sticking power is very good. However, he lacks any form of hard CC and only has slows to offer.

VS

Aatrox

Easy
266_64.png is not that hard to beat. Make sure to watch which form of his W he has active; avoid engaging if he's on the third stack as it will make it very hard to trade. Post 6 his ult gives a ton of attack speed which will make duels hard, either beat him before this point or take 14.png. If he is a significant threat, change from 3068_32.png to 3143_32.png.

VS

Akali

Medium

This lane is dependent on the skill of the 84_64.png . If she is aggressive, consider picking up  3065_32.png before 3022_32.png. Not dying is more important in this lane than killing.

VS

Amumu

Medium
32_64.png is a pretty even matchup. I highly doubt that you would have to face an Amumu in lane, though. Tips:
Wait to W until he uses his ultimate after stunning you for better chances of getting away. His E will block some of your early game damage with it's passive. Do not engage him if his W is on, it does a surprising amount of damage. Building 3211_32.png then your 3078_32.png will negate a lot of his damage and will give you a much easier time.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium
31_64.pnghas crazy sustain that Gangplank can't keep up with. Never rely on your Oranges for sustain, only to clear his silence/slow. You cannot clear knockups, I've tried. Dodge his Q's as best you can, and avoid dueling with him post 6 unless you're sure you won't get low health to where he can consume. An early 3093_32.png helps alot if you are behind.

VS

Darius

Hard
122_64.png is considered bad in most matchups after his update. However, I personally find him very hard to face as Gangplank. Gangplank is hard to play against lane bullies, and Darius does that better now more than ever. His stacking physical damage and ridiculous ult make dueling a pain.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium
36_64.png's itemization is very improved with the Juggernaut items. However, Gangplank can face off against Mundo pretty evenly. Beyond level 6, Mundo is hard to take down with his ultimate.

VS

Elise

Hard
60_64.png is a true scumbag. Her stun can be cleansed by your W, but that is insignificant. She does a ton of missing/current health damage, plus her annoying spiderlings will block your Q if you aren't that good at aiming. All-in against her when she is in human form, and try not to fight when she is in spider form, as her spiderlings do good damage. Never towerdive her, just play safe.

VS

Evelynn

Hard
28_64.png is a sneaky jungler. I personally ban her all the time when I'm team captain. If you have to go against her, I strongly suggest warding your buffs and timing them. Her clear time is super fast so she can steal it in seconds.

VS

Ezreal

Hard
81_64.png, specifically his Blue build path is hard to deal with. His core item, 3025_32.png make it easy to spam slowing Q's. As we know, Gangplank is prone to kiting. If you do manage to get your hands on Ezreal, he has a large amount of armor aswell as his Arcane Shift to avoid all of your damage. The best course of action is rely on a teammate with good CC abilities, or to avoid fighting Ezreal unless you're in a teamfight.

VS

Fiora

Hard
114_64.pngis difficult to beat as Gangplank. Her attack damage buff exceeds his, and a well timed Riptose will reflect damage of your Parrrley. At end game, Gangplank will be more useful than Fiora. His global presence is greater, but it will be hard to beat her in a duel. To counter her, don't be obvious about Q's so she can deflect them. Try to Q when her Parry is on cooldown, or don't even try to fight her until you're confident. Her ultimate will devastate you, so do not fight her when you're low. She has great gap closing, something Gangplank lacks. Avoid using 4.png until she already has used both of her Qs.

VS

Garen

Medium
86_64.png  is much harder to face in 5.16. His early game strength is less insane than before, but still really good. If you manage to get ahead, he will end up doing a ton of extra damage to you, making it hard to snowball. You can, however, bait his ultimates and heal with your W, but this is hard to pull off and rarely very rewarding.

VS

Gnar

Medium
150_64.png is pretty pesky against pirates. 41_64.png has his fair share of tricks to deal with him.

In ranged form, Gnar can excel at poking down Gangplank and asserting dominance. However, Gangplank has the ability to keep Gnar in combat to quickly transform him into the more favorable opponent, Mega Gnar.

Against Mega Gnar, Gangplank's playing field is significantly more even. Remove Scurvy can take away the stuns from both Wallop and GNAR! Gangplank can easily dodge boulder toss with his Raise Morale movement speed, and do pretty even amounts of damage. In short, while the same may not be true for most champions, Gangplank has a better time against Mega Gnar than Mini Gnar.

VS

Irelia

Medium
39_64.png can easily be bullied easy game. The real challenge is when she hits level 9, and if she's any good, maxes her W. At this point, her damage and lifestealing will be really difficult to deal with. Shut her down pre 9 with assistance from your jungler to have an easy time in lane. If that doesn't work, you can always cleanse her E with your oranges if you ever feel like you are in peril.

VS

Jax

Medium
24_64.png is said to be a huge counter to Gangplank. You must be smart enough to not use your Parrrley while he is dodging. After that, you can unload your damage. In prolonged duels Jax will excel, so keep to short duels and poking him down, then go in for the kill with Parrrley and 14.png.

VS

Jayce

Medium
126_64.png is a force to be reckoned with. Your key opportunity to rough him up is when his transform is on cooldown and he switched into Cannon form. In cannon form he can't jump or knock away, and he has less MR and Armor. Try your best to dodge his Q attack and don't engage onto him in hammer form unless you're confident.

VS

Kalista

Hard
429_64.png is tough for Gangplank to catch up to. Once you do, it shouldn't be too hard to stick to her and damage her. However, her kiting ability is very potent as Gangplank has no way to close the gap. I recommend going for the 3078_32.png 3022_32.png so you can catch up to her by Parrrley-ing from a distance.

VS

Kennen

Medium

I cannot decide Medium or Hard for this one. A good 85_64.png will poke you down and totally block you from cs, taking advantage of your melee. Gangplank is an excellent chaser, but do not try to pursue him if he uses his dash-he will only bait you and stun you. If you are caught by his ult, W immediately and Raise Morale to get away. In lane, feel free to AA often if he isn't poking you. You can surprise him with damage with an AA, Parrrley, 14.png and Ultimate combo for tons of DoT.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium
121_64.png does a large amount of burst damage unlike Gangplank. This can be scary and hard to deal with. Poke him with auto attacks when he tries to cs, and focus on last hitting your cannon minions with your Q for maximized gold lead. Ask your jungler to gank, and don't waste your 4.png until he jumps away.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

VS

Malphite

Medium
54_64.png is rock solid. His passive shield is really annoying, and the attack speed debuff is a big cripple to Gangplank. Against a tanky lane like this, focus on poking with auto attacks. Attack three times to get your passive  fully stacked against them, then stop fighting. Do this over and over until you're confident you can take them down.

VS

Malzahar

Medium
90_64.png is deceptively strong against Gangplank. Make sure to take Magic Resist runes in this lane or build an early 3211_32.png. His Space Aids (Malefic Visions) is annoying, stay away from your low health minions. However, post 6, Gangplank is the only champion in the game who can clear a Suppression without the use of a 3140_32.png. Use this to your advantage.

VS

Master Yi

Easy
11_64.png is a high-damage, high mobility hypercarry. Laning against him does not happen much, but to win, be aggressive level one. Be careful post 6.

VS

Nasus

Medium
75_64.png is a tough enemy, depending on the person playing him. In general, Nasus has a ton of sustain and it will be difficult to bully him out of lane. High-armor core items on Nasus make it difficult to take him down. Take advantage of Gangplank's early to mid game strength to deter Nasus from farming. If you can't bully him, outfarm him.

VS

Olaf

Medium
2_64.png is a bruiser like Gangplank. He has plenty of health sustain with his W, but he can be mana hungry if he uses it and his Undertow often. He does tons of burst with his Reckless Swing, so take heed chasing him at low health. His passive Armor/Magic  Resist post-6 will make it difficult to kill him, so try to get in your bullying before 6.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

The New Gangplank has a lot less trouble against Pantheon. Your true damage Trial by Fire will still apply through his passive shield, and a much lower mana cost on Parrrley gives you more oppurtunity to use it. However, Gangplank is still susceptible to poke and burst. Gangplank's Powder Keg offers more oppurtunities to counter attack, as opposed to the old iteration being easy to zone.

VS

Poppy

Medium
78_64.png is very underrated. You can cleanse her stun with your W. But, her Q's percentage of maximum health damage is deadly before you get your armor/magic resist. The worst part about this matchup is her passive, she is hard to pick off with your Parrrley. Opt for poking or jungler help, because prolonged fights will give her W stacks.

VS

Quinn

Medium
133_64.png's blind doesn't affect your Q, just like 17_64.png. Her slows and poke are very annoying, but if you all in you should be able to beat her. If she uses Valor to get away, stop chasing. Her movement speed boost is comparable to 222_64.png passive.

VS

Rammus

Medium

In this match-up, it's not necessarily what 33_64.png does to you, but what you do to him. His Taunt is no match for your Oranges, but the only thing setting you back from wrecking him is his close range power and armor build. Take heed while fighting him if he has a 3075_32.png and his W in use. Since he is building more armor, you won't get as much damage returned to you by the Thornmail, but your attacks won't do nearly as much damage. Avoid close range fighting because of his low CD Ultimate and Taunt + W combo. Farm up and perhaps replace 3074_32.png with 3153_32.png for increased kiting potential.

VS

Renekton

Hard
58_64.png is really tanky and somehow does damage. Most rush a 3068_32.png, making it really hard to duel him as Gangplank because of the armor. Never stick around with low health, as he can towerdive extremely easy. Renekton has a huge amount of sustain, damage, and tankiness. This lane is nearly impossible to win, unless you get some sort of great gank or a lucky kill under tower. Rush your sunfire and hope to survive.

VS

Rengar

Medium

Rengar does a lot of burst damage that you can't really heal back with Oranges. Keep in mind your Ultimate gives vision, so use that to your advantage if you're pursuing him and believe he is in a bush.

VS

Riven

Hard
92_64.png is an extremely hard matchup. I'd say the best thing to do would be laneswap in hopes of facing someone easier like 127_64.png. If you have to face Riven though, wait to use your Parrrley when her shield is down. Cleanse her stuns if you have to with Oranges. I'd say this is the single hardest lane as Gangplank, and a good Riven is a force to be reckoned with.

VS

Rumble

Medium
68_64.png is not a hard counter to Gangplank, but nonetheless a counter. Never Q him if he has his shield up, and focus on dodging his Q. Standing in his flames is a bad idea. Poke him with basic attacks while his bar is under 50%, and avoid dueling if it's over 50%. His ultimate is devastating, get away from it at all costs.

VS

Ryze

Medium
13_64.png is not much of a problem in the current meta, he has a very low pickrate. Early game it will be pretty easy for you to beat him. But, beware of his late game damage as his 3048_32.png and 3027_32.png complete charging up. Take advantage of your early game dominance and carry by fighting other people.

VS

Shen

Medium
98_64.png isn't very hard to lane against. Always take 12.png against him to follow him when he ults to your other lanes. He will get really hard to slay once he gets a 3068_32.png/3083_32.png. Before that happens, duel him like regular and if you're taunted, W it immediately.

VS

Shyvana

Hard
102_64.png will forever be a pain in lane. She has more or less been kicked out of the jungle due to damage nerfs to her Burnout. Try your best to bully her, but she can easily turn around and kill you right back if she rushes a 3153_32.png. Her damage output is far more bursty and scary, while this Gangplank build relies on staying in a fight and wearing enemies down. Late game, you can possibly stand up to her.

VS

Singed

Medium
41_64.png is not a very effective duelist for dealing with 27_64.png. The build I provided is really good for chasing, which isn't effective against Singed. Passive farm and maybe first item 3077_32.png to clear his minions fast will help.

VS

Sion

Easy
14_64.png is definitely an improved champion from what he used to be. However, he may be more susceptible to Gangplank now. He is all about CC and slow damage. Gangplank is all about clearing CC, and can become very mobile. Prioritize an early 3078_32.pngso you can run around all of his Q's and E's and Ults. Use your Remove Scurvy if he manages to hit a successful Q, and try to kite him around and chase him when he's low. Build a 3153_32.png so you can steal his Movement Speed if he chases you down with his Passive's "Glory In Death."

VS

Skarner

Easy
72_64.png can be easily kited by Gangplank. You can use your Remove Scurvy to escape from his ultimate, aswell as his stun. Gangplank's mobility can help him run from, kite, and chase Skarner effectively.

VS

Swain

Medium
50_64.png is a sustain heavy mage who focuses on damage over time and lockdown. Level one you should try and all-in if he takes his E ability, Torment. If he takes either of his other two spells, don't all in. You should definitely take 14.png in this lane, his healing is one of the best of any champion when he hits level 6. Take an early 3044_32.png; if you stay on him it will be harder to hit his Snare, and he runs out of options at close range.

VS

Taric

Easy
44_64.png top is easier to deal with with the gameplay update to Gangplank. His high amounts of armor are easier to deal with given Gangplank's true damage and huge armor penetration. Since Taric is a melee, it's harder for him to take out your Barrels.

VS

Teemo

Medium
17_64.png' is harder to deal with with the new update. Since he has ranged attacks, he can take out your Barrels making them a lot harder to use. His poke and blind are very annoying. If you manage to get into melee range, you can out-all in him. However, he can be very slippery and you will lack jungle support.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium
23_64.pngdoes a LOT of level one damage, something Gangplank doesn't have. Do not engage him when he has a large amount of Fury, and take heed when you are low health. Take to your advantage that most Tryndamere's are pure glass cannons, only building maybe one defensive item. (3083_32.png,3022_32.png,3156_32.png,3139_32.png.) This means that you will be able to shell out a lot of damage, but so will he. Thanks to your handy dandy 3078_32.png, you'll have an easier time outrunning and kiting him.

VS

Urgot

Hard
6_64.png is a poking machine early game. He kinda reminds me of the Greivers from The Maze Runner. Anyways, dodge his E ability or else he will poke unrelentingly with his Q. You cannot cleanse his ultimate with your Oranges. Most Urgots build an early 3110_32.png. Just don't feed and hold onto the hope that you may be better equipped than him late game.

VS

Vayne

Medium

VS

Vel'Koz

Medium
161_64.png vs Gangplank is a pretty balanced lane, I found! Your Remove Scurvy does not remove Deconstruction stacks. Additional MS from Raise Morale is helpful for dodging his E ability, Tectonic Disruption. This is the most important ability to dodge, without it he'll have a hard time landing his full combo.

VS

Volibear

Medium
106_64.png is really tough. Poke him down, but he'll heal it all back up. Stay behind minions most of the time, as a fling and slow combo will give you bad chances at escaping. When his passive finally pops, try to keep fighting if you have 14.png, otherwise flee. After that, he'll be much more vulnerable, but his Frenzy Bite will still be lethal.

VS

Warwick

Easy
19_64.png top tends to fight in a predictable manner - either they are AD and will have to run up and whack you, or they are AP and will spam Q. Warwick's auto attack range is the same as Gangplank's. So if harasses you, you can harass back in most situations. His level one is pretty weak, you can use this to get ahead early and establish dominance.

VS

Wukong

Hard
62_64.png is a huge lane bully and does a lot of damage in a short amount of time. His armor pen. is devastating. This will be a passive lane, you might want to pick up 3093_32.png to compensate for the gold loss.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

This is one of the easiest matchups. IF 157_64.png lands a whirlwind on you post 6, W when he jumps onto you with his ult. You will not be affected by the damage if you time it correctly. Your Q is longer range than his and does the same on hit effects, so you have the ability to run from him unlike other champs with a 3078_32.png3022_32.png.  If you're worried about his little baby shield, knock it out with a basic attack then go in for Parrrley damage. In the laning phase, focus on dodging his Q and keep distance from your own minions so he has less chances to engage with his E. When you're ready to lay down the hurt, initiate with a Raise Morale > Basic Attack. Once his shield is dissipated, hit him with the Cannonball + Ignite + Parrrley Combo for massive damage. All the while your passive slow will reduce him to rubble and he will have no choice but to cry.

VS

Yorick

Medium
83_64.png like 266_64.png is an underplayed champion who heals often. Most will poke you and heal the poke you do with his omens. To counter this, do the same strat as you do against Aatrox and Mundo, build an early 3123_32.png. This should minimize his healing and help you win trades. He has no built in escape, but is easily capable of turning around. Call for your jungler if you're tentative about killing him.

VS

Zac

Medium
154_64.png is usually played jungle, but in the event that he plays top: Step on his blobs every chance you get. This will greatly reduce his sustain. Nothing is too annoying about Zac. This lane is pretty much a skill matchup.

Champions Gangplank Have Synergy With Back to Top

120_64.png
Hecarim and Gangplank are very potent allies. Gangplank's Raise Morale buff on his ultimate upgrade will make for impressive wombos and additional attack damage for Hecarim, due to his passive. This synergy makes for a lethal late-game top and jungle duo.

201.png
Braum is here for Gangplank! Braum's passive will trigger on hit of Gangplank's basic attacks, which includes his Parrrley.  That means Gangplank can stun or apply more stacks from a range that other champions may not be able to. This allows for more powerful skirmishing and increases pick potential.

59_64.png
Jarvan's Cataclysm attack is a very useful tool for a crafty Gangplank player. His ability to trap enemies will allow for easy detonation of Powder Keg, leading to huge physical damage. Additionally, grouping up enemies will allow Cannon Barrage to deal a lot more damage.
127_64.png
Lissandra is a powerful flex mid/top pick. Gangplank lacks hard CC, but Lissandra makes up for it. Both are capable of doing huge AoE damage with their ultimates. Her CC makes it easy for Gangplank to position kegs and do full damage with his ultimate.

Fighting Effectively Back to Top

41_64.png is an extremely versatile champion. Popularized by "This is why we hate Gangplank" by the Youtuber McRooster, people think he is OP because of his CC clearing capabilities. This isn't his only good aspect.

Most guides will only tell what to fight with, I'll give you insight as to how.

Early Laning

Early laning as Gangplank is one of the quintessential skills that you'll have to master. Gangplank has one of the best level one-three in the game. His Parrrley auto-attack reset is good for early game kills and surprise damage. It may be considered "cheesy" but inbetween CSing it's not a bad idea to auto attack your opponent if they're nearby. Gangplank deals good damage in the early game, so auto attack often, especially if they have all of one type of defensive runes. If you really want to cheese your opponent, hit level 2 before them and get your Remove Scurvy to ensure safety, then hit them with a quick AutoAttack and Parrrley combo, procing your true damage passive and dealing a ton of physical damage, too. Use your MS boost to your advantage and continue your onslaught. If they retalliate, it's okay because you have an Orange to do a quick 80 heal and win most fights. After this, you can CS in peace, back and get a 3044_32.png and go on to win lane.

Don't let Remove Scurvy be a false idol, only use it to clear CC or heal and prevent a DoT from killing you.

You should never use your oranges just to heal when you're sitting around in lane. This is a huge waste of mana and will leave you worse off in fights when you can't use your abilities. You should use it only if you're threatened by a CC or if you're about to die from a poison/14.png

3078_64.png is God-Tier.

Trinity Force is the best item to build on Gangplank. If you don't build this item, you're missing out. All of it's effects help out your Parrrley in some way. You can use your Raise Morale to activate the 3057_32.png aspect of this item for extra damage against towers. The mana and health are useful, it gives crit, AS, AD, AP, all stats that Gangplank can benefit from. The build path is super friendly to Gangplank no matter your budget. It should be rushed in 99% of situations.

Fighting against a melee champion with the same range allows you to be able to sort of "kite" your opponent. Trinity Force GP, especially with Frozen Mallet can attack and back up or dodge around, constantly adjusting position to better attack and avoid being attacked.

Cool Tips and Tricks Back to Top

The Risky Chase Safeguard

Say there was a big teamfight, but 41_64.png is left alone or with just one other teammate, while the enemy team has three people with one low health 21_64.png. If Gangplank wants to safely kill her and get away, he can use his Cannon Barrage on a big wave of enemy minions, the minion kills will proc 3078_32.png's speed boost, giving you supreme mobility to run in and take the kill, then swiftly escape the enemy team.

The Global Assistant

Say you're in a slow, sustain heavy lane with nothing to do but farm. (against 36_64.png or 98_64.png) and a fight breaks out bottom lane with their ADC, Support and Jungler, aswell as your teammates. Ult down there and pick up 3 free assists and maybe even some CS. This will get you ahead and allow you to be more aggressive and win lane.

AA Reset Burst Combo

Gangplank is a pirate, so of course he has some tricks. To effectively burst an opponent unexpectedly, one can follow the simple combo.
AutoAttack -> Parrrley -> AutoAttack -> 3074_32.png -> AutoAttack. This will get all 3 stacks of Grog-Soaked-Blade applied very quickly, and will apply any other on-hit effects. It will also complete the 3071_32.png passive in one move.

About the Author Back to Top

I have been playing Gangplank for as long as I remember,  ever since I began playing League of Legends, when121_64.pngfirst came out. I even changed my summoner name to a reference to his Passive (Grog-Soaked Blade is his passive, and my summoner name is Grog). He was my first non-450 champ that I really liked. I mained him until I got to level 30 and he is currently my most played champion in Ranked Play. I have every skin of his except for Sultan. Please enjoy my guide and comment with questions or what you liked/disliked about it!

In Season 3, I ended in Silver with Gangplank being my top-played champion. However, I had a below 50% winrate. Him being my favorite champion, I resolved to practice him up.

In Season 4, I ended in Gold 5 with 1500 LKS. Gangplank was again my top played champion with a 57% winrate. Given the amount of games, this is alright.

In Season 5, I want to get to Plat or atleast high Gold. I'm currently in low gold with above average Gangplank stats.
