Summoner Spells Back to Top

12.png4.png
I like to take teleport and flash when I go gangplank top. Flash is a great all purpose ability since Gangplank has no escape and teleport is great for getting back to lane quickly, splitpushing and jumping into dragon fights.

Smite is essential for Jungleplank. I will report you if you don't take it.

14.png4.png
If you want a more aggressive start ignite will be good for you.

A great spell for securing kills as Supportplank.

I refuse to explain my rational for picking these masteries ;)

After the rework, Ye Old Pirate has a new e and things are going to look quite a bit different for GP as a result. You should now max q so that you can get silver serpents and upgrade your ult much faster. You should choose to grab w or e second depending on how you want to play the lane. If you want to be more conservative or are playing a tough lane, grab w. If you want to be aggressive grab e. Ultimately though, you should be maxing R first, Q second, E Third, W Fourth.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Have you ever wanted to test your luck and get some early game crits to win lane? Step right up then sir.
Pick these up as soon as you can.
A good mix of health and damage.
I like to run this on Supportplank. His q acts as a basic attacks so he can last hit creeps at a distance and give the gold to his carry.
Don't think I won't report you if you play Jungleplank and don't get the machete... because I will.
    Don't Forget a Trinket.

Core Items

These boots are for you. Do not get berserker's greaves.
Core Offensive Items: Infinity Edge - Gangplank's best all around damage item. Makes him crit hard. Trinity Force - A great item to rush. An early sheen gives him great sustain, it gives him great sticking power, crit and sheen procs on his q. It even buffs his ult and w a little.
Core Defensive Items: Sunfire Cape - I love sunfire cape for irrational reasons. Spirit Visage - The mr is great against AP and it also buffs his heal.
    Supportplank Build
You should grab one of these, but I personally prefer shiv because the passive can proc on his q. A lot of times I will rush a sheen and then pick up a shiv as my second item for the helpful poke in lane.

Situational Items

Need More Survivability? Grab these - Randuins for more armor, banshee's for more magic resist, and frozen mallet for extra health and sticking power.
Need More Damage? I love to run Hydra because it makes his Q do AOE damage. The lifesteal also also applies on his Q. If you want to become a splitpush plank, you should pair this with a sunfire cape and shiv.
I generally build Gangplank so that he can do huge damage to squishy targets while still being durable. However, if you want/need some armor pen, these will do you well.
This can be an alternative to trinity force if you aren't doing so well or your team needs you to be more durable. Similar to tri-force, but with less damage, more cc and more tankiness.

VS

Nasus

Medium

He can be tough to force out of lane. If you can kill him early, you should be good to go. If you cannot, prepare to die!!!!!!!

VS

Pantheon

Hard

A very tough matchup early. Similar to riven. Try to survive. If he kills you once, he will kill you again, and again and again... His late game can't compare to the almighty pirate though ;)

VS

Riven

Hard

A very hard lane. Similar to Pantheon. If she kills you she will dance on your grave all day and your team will never stop flaming you for feeding the Riven. GG Boyz!!!

VS

Teemo

Hard

Teemo is very annoying to lane against. His harass with q and e do a lot early and he can be tough to track down with the speed boost from w and his ult. Call in the jungler and dance on his grave landlubber!

Using Gangplank's Fancy New Barrels Back to Top

I'm still trying to get used to learning GP's new barrels. There is a surprising amount of depth to using his barrels to their maximum effectiveness, and when used properly they can have a devastating effect on the enemy team. I may not have mastered them, but I found a video that teaches a lot of helpful tips and techniques. Note - THIS VIDEO IS NOT MINE AND I AM NOT TRYING TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF IT. ALL RIGHTS AND CREDIT GO TO THE ORIGINAL CREATOR. I JUST THINK THAT THE VIDEO WILL BE HELPFUL.

Why Play Gangplank? Back to Top

Why Pick Gangplank?41_64.png

He may be considered a troll pick (not quite as much after the rework), but he's ton of fun! There's nothing as much fun as critting the enemy ad carry for 75% of their health, and he eats oranges to cure scurvy. If that's not reason to play him, I don't know what is. And, if you suck like me, and are in silver, you can definitely win games, even in ranked. I've played Gangplank in every position, and even when I don't do as well, I still love to play him. Eat some oranges sucker, and take the pirate onto the rift.
