Im a toplane player, and therefore always use teleport. If you want to play mid, i would still recommend picking tp, as the pirate often has no use of 14.png. You might pick 3.png if you're up against Zed or other assassins that needs a kick to the face when they go for you. I will mainly focus on toplane for this guide, as i have no knowladge of the current situation of midlane.

The way i play The pirate is not an aggresive one, that is why even my talents are so defensively build up aswell. Most of my picks are self explained, but i want to highlight a few.


First of all i pick Wanderer over Savagery, you can go for Savagery if you're not confident in your ability to lasthit minions, but i feel like Savagery gets irrelevant after lvl 7, while Wanderer keeps a positiv effect on your entire game.

Secondly i pick Meditation over Merciless, this is because i never really kill my lane opponent 1v1 and thus dont need it. Meditation helps you keep up your mana, which is essentiel for the pirate as he's a huge mana consumer early on. 

Lastly i would like to mention Grasp of the Undying. It's a most pick for the pirate, because it gives him so much sustain in lane. What you want to do is, stack the buff fully up and parley the enemy to steal his hp. This again highlight my way of ''just farm, dont die'' playstyle.

Not much explaining need to be done here. Parley gives you more gold as you lvl it up and deals more damage, which makes your barrels deal more damage and lasthitting is easier.


I choose to max barrel afterwards, because it needs to start dealing mad damage at lvl 12-13 and if you've maxed Remove Scurvy it wont deal damage and slow as much as you would like.

Starting Items

    Starting Items:Helps you stay alive and gives mana. Very useful, switch the warding trinket for a blue when you hit lvl 9.
    You should aim to back pretty early to get a cull and boots. Again both will help you survive. Get a sheen afterwards which help with mana and lasthitting.

Core Items

    Always get thise 3 items. They make you deal damage like no other, and gives 40% CD reduction. Also mana.

Situational Items

    Get boots after what you're against, but always get Distortion enchance.
    All thies items are good for diffrent purposes.

Always pick 2033.png at the start, there is no situation where you need to go for anything else. Get a 1083.png aswell, it really helps you scale and gives a nice little amount of lifesteal and attack damage.


Always get 3078.png3508.png and 3031.png in that order. After you've completed thies 3 items you should have tons of damage and be around lvl 13 where your barrels has a low charge time.

Get 1308.png if you're ahead and want to go roam and take down turrets, the movement speed is nice together with 3078.png and really makes move quickly. The utility is nice, but if you lost your lane 1318.png and 1323.png is a much better choice to help you survive. Pick after the enemies team damage type.

For my last 2 items i almost always buy 3053.png and either 3036.png or 3033.png it gives you the tankyness you need combined with the talents and mastery and a crap ton of damage. If the enemy team has a lot of AP damage 3156.png is a good replacement for 3053.png and if the enemy has a lot of cc i would recommed a 3139.png, because the orange might not be enoght.

3812.png is also a viable option if you really wanna push your damage, it does however makes you move vunerable to cc lock and high burst than the other choices.

Gankplank has had a lot of nerfs, and has made me adapt my playstyle and build. I feel like he is at a good place now tho. The way i play him is very passive, i will often get to lvl 13 without getting a single kill. Lvl 7 and 13 are very essentiel for the pirate, at lvl 7 farming becomes much easier and at lvl 13 champion farming becomes a lot easier. Gankplank is all about managing your barrels, if you shoot your parley a microsecond too early you might cause a timefight loss. 


As a rule of thumb your ultimate should always be on cooldown, use it around the map to create opportunities for your team. A well placed barrel in laning phase can also cause a lot of trouble for your opponent and make a jungle gank possible.

When you play gankplank you should always be patient, patients is the keyword. Don't hesitate to test your damage on your enemies but dont get too greedy. Gankplank is a splitpusher untill he reaches 13.
