Summoner Spells Back to Top

Man mode summoner spells, honestly I feel like Garen doesn't need flash to secure kills, and with enough wards you won't need it to escape either, teleport gives you map presence and ignite gives you kill pressure in lane.

R > E > Q > W

Max your E first as it is your main damage tool, and will help you win team fights if you can get it on more than two people.

Max your Q second to help increase your damage and movement speed from Q, also increases the silence duration.

Max W last, it will help you in teamfights and mitigate a lot of damage, NOTE*** Use it when you think you'll be bursted not when you're about to die.

NOTE* Casting Ignite during your E will not cancel it's animation, the only thing that cancels the animation is your Ultimate or pressing the E button again, or when the cool down is up.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Best Start
Need to dodge skills, (Lulu, Rumble, etc.)
If you need to rush Hex Drinker.

Core Items

One of the best items, I always rush Bami's against melee champions because it adds to the damage that your E will do in trades. So in essence rush BAMI's. 1st Item
If they have a lot of CC, go Merc, if not go Tabi. Make this your 2nd Item.
Super good in team fights, make sure to get it as like your 3rd item or 4th.
Make one of these two items your item after Sunfire, depending on which passive you want. I go Deadmans' more often than Randuins. 3rd item
Either of these can be picked up for your third item, when against an AP heavy comp. 3rd Item
    FULL BUILD VS AD TEAM
    FULL BUILD VS AP TEAM

Situational Items

Good if you get far ahead in lane early, you can snowball yourself with this item, it gives you the ability to chase and armor pen but not super useful late game on Garen specifically.
Either this or spirit visage, but since spirit helps with your passive I usually always pick Spirit of this item.
Good for split pushing and turret diving, it gives you increased movement speed near towers even if they're dead.
Super good for tanking towers and if they're a heavy ad team, other wise there are better armor items that give better stats, get this if they have a fed ADC.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Easy if you don't let him get below half and ult, you have to ignite him when he's below half and then hit him with your ult, when he gets armor the lane will be more in his favor.

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

You won't really find a lot of these but she'll beat you in the match up, her constant slow beats your Q, and her damage out put is insane, also her Q destroys your passive. Wait for a gank, and farm to the best of your ability.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

The ap version of you, has burst damage and an execute, you can out farm him and kill him before level six, try to all in him at level 9 as well, he can't eat you when he's silenced so try to silence him if you think he'll feast you.

VS

Darius

Medium

Darius doesn't counter you, his bleed is only annoying if you let it stack too often, trade with him when you can and use your passive to out regen him, you'll win if you hit six first, get Bami's as it destroys him when he tries to trade.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Hard

His cleavers do percent damage and slow you repeatedly, he's also too tanky for you to kill, so you have to try and kill him pre 6, which isn't garen's strong suit, try and get ganks and farm harder than him.

VS

Fiora

Easy

Her new ultimate isn't super amazing, just make sure that she does not parry your ult and ignite, wait for her animation to go away then ult her, you can all in her, don't let her hit vitals, if she tries, Q her and spin on her.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

His barrels are a pain with armor pen, but you can destroy them, if you avoid his barrels you can all in him and win almost all of the time.

VS

Gnar

Medium

He can jump away from you but you can Q his slow which lets you catch up to him, try and use bushes to your advantage to beat him, when he transforms you can hurt him a lot with your combo, and wait for him to transform back to tiny gnar and ignite and ult him.

VS

Hecarim

Medium

Don't fight him when he has two stacks of Q, you can spin on him if he tries to all in you, you're stronger at 5 and level 9. Use that to your advantage.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

His turrets stop you from going all in on him, as well as his ability to poke your passive down. You need a gank, but if you get a kill on him and rush hex drinker you can snow ball.

VS

Irelia

Medium

Her level 9 is strong, but you can kill her at six with your ignite and ultimate up, try to stay at equal health with her until you're going for a kill, she shouldn't be able to kill you since you can run away, and when she tries to stun it'll be a slow and you can Q away.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

Wait for him to miss his combo and silence him and spin on him, build armor and you'll easily start out trading him.

VS

Jax

Easy

He can't dodge your silence and if he jumps on you spin on him, super free lane, ignite and ultimate will crush him at six, he'll try to jump on you after two auto attacks, when he's six, keep that in mind.

VS

Jayce

Medium

Use bushes to deny vision, you can try and cheese him out when he goes for last hits, other than that his kit is really good to stay away from you, but he can't kill you.

VS

Malphite

Medium

After he gets his armor you can't kill him, pre 6, and at 6 you have to try and burst him down, his slow can't stay on you since your Q takes it off, if he tries that all in him.

VS

Maokai

Easy

Easy lane, rush bami's and when he twisted advances you just kill him with Q and E, he'll push so counter push with Bami's try to kill him at level 9 or earlier if you can.

VS

Nasus

Medium

If you kill him and deny farm super easy, if you let him farm and he gets out of control you'll have to ult him later in fights.

VS

Olaf

Medium

His true damage is higher but your burst is higher. When he tries to pick up his axe punish him for it.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Don't Q his passive, you have to auto him first, if he goes into stun animation use your E so that he has to take damage for stunning you.

VS

Poppy

Medium

Her passive kills your ult, so use ignite after you ult, that way you're not adding useless damage to your ults health missing portion as it is reduced by her passive.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Silence him when he dashes in, you can kill him if you hit six first, other than that it's a farm lane.

VS

Rengar

Easy

Don't let him cheese you and hit level 5, if you hit 5 without dying you'll win, he'll try to jump on you from a bush and just out trade him with your silence.

VS

Riven

Easy

Same thing with Rengar, all in her at level 6, and you'll burst her down, your W, mitigates a lot of her ad from her ult, so use it right after she ults.

VS

Rumble

Hard

He has two slows and a speed up, so you can't catch him in this lane, he has high magic dps and can kill you if he hits a slow, wait for a jungler gank and try to farm as best as you can.

VS

Ryze

Medium

He has the potential to do a lot of damage but if you rush hex drinker you'll be ok.

VS

Shen

Medium

He's a tank like you, silence his TP and his ultimate to relieve pressure on the map, you can kill him at level 6, and possibly 9, after that you're both just farming.

VS

Singed

Hard

His kit is perfect to shut you down, and he can farm behind your tower and is faster than you so that you can't catch him, he can fling you away from his team so you can't spin on them, overall a match up that you won't win simply due to the counter.

VS

Sion

Medium

Silence his giant axe swing, another tank champion like Shen, a farm lane.

VS

Tahm Kench

Medium

He has a lot of magic damage and the more health you build, the more damage he'll do, super annoying to lane against if you aren't careful.

VS

Teemo

Hard

His E's passive destroys your passive and he has a speed up to get away from you, get cowl early and farm and be better in team fights.

VS

Trundle

Hard

He out sustains you, and he takes away your damage if you try to spin on him, his ult negates all your stats and I feel that he has better team fight potential. He'll lose if get an early gank, and build bami's with a little bit of damage.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

He'll split push all game, but you can kill him pre 6. You can rush thornmail against him if you plan on laning against him for more than 20mins.

VS

Wukong

Easy

You out damage him and you can also beat him in trades, if he goes for a CS with his E, silence him and spin on him.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

He has the tools to get away from you with his dashes, so he can avoid your entire spin. His wind wall is useless against you, build some armor and you can 1v1 him around level 9.

VS

Yorick

Easy

All in him, with you W on his ghosts don't do that much damage. Just silence him before he can use his ult and the lane is easy.

Game Phases! How To Harass (Fixing Soon) Back to Top

EARLY GAME: LEVELS 1-5
This is where you'll either become a MONSTER, or just be kind of relevant. So you want to start with 1029.png2003.png in most if not all AD lanes. This will give you good defense when you trade, and sustain with five pots.

Trading, early on when you're both going for last hits, watch how your opponent moves, if they attempt to go for a last hit while inside your creep wave, auto them, and Q them immediately after the auto, to reset your attack animation and get off more harass, this deals about 200+ damage level 1, and one of the best trading tools early game.

Around level 5 is a good time to start trading with your E, as it has three points and actually does decent damage, by this time you should also have a 3751.png which will help with trades versus both ad and ap champions.

If you're struggling versus an AP champion you can either rush, 3155.png if you plan on going all in on them, or 3211.png if you're just trying to farm.

Mid Game: LEVELS 6-15 GROUPING
This is around the time where you have the most kill potential. Around level 6 you'll still probably be in lane, what I like to do, is if I get ganked, blow all my cool downs on the jungler and kill them, 9/10 the top laner will back off if their jungler dies.

Around level 9, you should have 3068.png3047.png with this combination, plus your Q and E combo, coupled with ignite and your ultimate you can kill any top laner you're against, if you get the full combo on them.

Level 11 you get another power spike with your ultimate, use this to your advantage, it adds another 150-250 damage on top of the execute.

This is also when you'll start grouping, note that you'll mostly be in the front, no team wants to engage when garen is in front, and if they do, pop your W and destroy them.

Late Game: LEVELS 16-18 END GAME

Your build vs AD Team
3047.png3068.png3071.png3742.png3143.png3156.png

Your build vs AP Team
3111.png3068.png3071.png3065.png3156.png3742.png

Clever is a usual must since it shreds the armor of all the tanks on the opposing team.

During this point of the game, you should be engaging team fights whenever you can, and when  you're at about 1/4th hp you walk out of the fight, wait about 4 seconds and let yourself regen so you can engage again. You should try to push away their carries, or you stay by your carry and shred any tank that has armor near your carries. Make sure you use your Q to get out of any slows that you may be hit by, before, or during the team fight. Honestly always try to ult carries but if there's a tank that needs to die you can ult them as well.

About me! :) Back to Top

Started this season in Silver I, decided I'd play my favorite champion.

Played Garen and now am in Platinum II two weeks shortly after. I feel like he's a good champion and is underrated but it takes a good team comp to make him shine.
