Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png
Mandatory for 4.png + Q engages. Really useful for escaping as well.

14.png
Securing kills. Do I have to say more?

12.png
You think you can't win your lane? Or do you want to apply pressure to other lanes? Take it.

6.png
Very situational. Lower cooldown than 4.png, but you are hardly tanky enough to actually manoeuver a teamfight. Can be strong if you might get kited a lot (e.g. 429.png).

3.png
If you're afraid of your lane opponent - pick this. Also helps peeling for you or your team mates.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

Thunderlord's Decree is still going strong, especially for you, since your damage is burst oriented and strongly depends on your abilities rather than auto attacks.

12 points in Resolve for some early endurance.

Cunning Tree

  • Savagery is useless, so pick Wanderer instead.
  • Assassin is useful since you're on a solo lane. You don't need cookies :)
  • Merciless is the only viable option since you don't use mana.
  • Take Dangerous Game. You don't poke.
  • Precision > Intelligence (if you don't play support).

Resolve Tree

  • Unyielding is only good if you buy tank items.
  • Pick Explorer, since Tough Skin is nearly useless.
  • Veteran's Scars now grant a flat amount of 45 HP, but since you don't rely on lifesteal, this is better.
  • Insight for more 4.png-Q engages.

Skill advice

- You can pick E at level 1 if you don't intend to trade at all.

- Take Q at level 3 instead of W for reason listed above, I wouldn't recommend it though.

- Max Q first, so you do quick trades more often. Silence is the bane of any mage and effectively prevents retaliation.

Q - Decisive Strike

The silecne duration stays at 1.5 seconds at all ranks. The base damage as well as the move speed buff duration increases.

W - Courage

Passive: allows you to gain resistances as you kill minions.
Active: the percentage damage reduction stays at 30% at all ranks, the duration increases from 2-6 seconds.

E - Judgment

Deals 33% increased damage when striking only one (1) enemy. Judgment can critically strike (!). Cooldown gets reduced if you deactivate it before the end of its duration, so turn it off as soon as no more enemies (minions) are nearby.

Quotation from LoL Wiki:
"Judgment can Critical strike icon critically strike, increasing its damage by 50% plus his bonus critical damage."

You see, 3031.png is a must-have for significantly increased damage.

R - Demacian Justice

Passive: deals slight true damage on every auto attack to whomever the momentary villain is.
Active: attempt to execute the target, additionally deals a percentage if the target's missing health. If the target is the villain, this ability deals true damage (!).

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Normal start w/o a doran's item
    Safe start/farm lane
very aggressive start, going for early kill at level 1 or 2
    trinket choices

Core Items

    Best items
    offensive/defensive options
    defensive options
    want lifesteal?
    super strong on garen
surprisingly strong if you want increased burst

Situational Items

    highly situational

Start

Normally, pick a 1036.png and 3x2003.png. Leave your base and go cover a jungle entrance, maybe place a ward. If you forgot to buy the trinket, don't fret. As soon as you leave the base, it will appear in your inventory.

Oftentimes, a Doran's item is picked because of the health bonus, which hopefully prevents the opponent from blowing you up too easily. 86.png has high base health, so it isn't a must.

First back

Try to get your hands on a 3134.png (for offensive play) or a 3133.png for 3142.png.
Otherwise, a 1038.png which builds into 3031.png/3147.png is nice.
1001.png in between your other purchases is almost a must-have, since your engage lives off of your movement speed.

Example Build #1

1308.png3142.png3031.png3147.png3812.png3742.png

Example Build #2

1331.png3031.png3087.png3072.png3078.png3053.png

Core Items

3142.png
As much AD as an 3031.png, 20 armor penetration, 10% CDR and a really neat active - (almost) everything you could every wish for. Use the active for chasing mobile targets or escaping sticky situations.

3031.png
65 AD, 20% crit chance and 25% increased crit damage. Damage? Damage!

3147.png
Very strong item with 75 AD, movement speed and a passive like 238.png's ult. Extremely strong!

3087.png
Strong against squishies, the passive grants extra burst (e.g. on your opening Q), the crit chance and attack speed round this offer up well.

3071.png
Strong against tanks, your auto hits and E ticks shred your enemies' armor by up to 30%. 55 AD, 300 health and gigantic 20% CDR are super strong.

3072.png
75 AD, 20% life steal and a shield from overheal, nice combination of offense and (slight) defense.

3139.png
75 AD, 35 magic resist, 10% life steal. Good and viable alternative to 3072.png. The active makes the difference. Removes all debuffs (that means any CC and 238.png's ult as well) and grants +50% move speed for 1 second. Extremely useful against any hard CC, like 19.png/90.png's  ult or 45.png's stun.

3812.png
Good LS alternative if you need to cap out your cooldown reduction.

Situational Items

3074.png
Less life steal than 3072.png, but can be a good replacement if you plan to splitpush a lot. It's a purely offensive item.

3748.png
Tanky variation of the Ravenous Hydra. Grants health instead of life steal.

3156.png
Good to counter high burst champions, the shield will save your a$$ a lot of times.
AD and magic resist are nice as well.

3022.png
If you have a lot of trouble sticking to a target, this might be a solution for you. 30 AD, 700 health (3083.png grants 800!) and a 1.5 sec slow on every auto attack.

3078.png
Becomes interesting as a replacement for 3071.png/3087.png when you build purely AD, since the spellblade passive scales off of it. Your Q will get even stronger.

Boots and Enchantments

3009.png
Best boots. You get CDR from your other items and you absolutely need the additional move speed. Reduces the effectivity of slows as well.

1306.png
My favourite enchantment is Alacrity. More unconditional move speed is always welcome.

1308.png
Distortion is also nice since it allows your to use your 4.png + Q engage more often.

Defensive Items

Only consider buying more than one offensive item if your team doesn't have a single tank. Otherwise don't.

3102.png
Good against engage spells like hooks & grabs.

3742.png
You highly profit from movement speed. Best defensive option imho.

3053.png
Very useful for countering high burst.

VS

Ahri

Medium

Difficulty: 6/10 - 8/10

A single ahriorbofdeception.png combined with an auto hit is enough to procc TD, and the true damage is extremely strong. You have the upper hand if you manage to land a garenslash3.png, which is the bane of any mage's existance. Make her waste ahritumble.png, then the kill is within your grasp.

You can go ham at levels 1 and 2; pick 14.png to secure kills.

VS

Akali

Hard

Difficulty: 7/10 - 10/10

Her cooldowns are way lower than yours early on. Be careful of the proccs and her E harrass. Always carry a 2043.png with you to counter her akalismokebomb.png. You can break her combo with your silence; turn around and kill the ninja when she jumps at you. If she gets even slightly fed, play very carefully as she can easily burst you down.

VS

Azir

Medium

Difficulty: 4/10 - 7/10

He isn't directly a threat, but adept at poking the living hell out of you. Play aggressive, he is slow and squishy. An early all-in at level might be rewarding.

VS

Brand

Hard

Difficulty: 6/10 - 9/10

He is among the mages with the highest burst potential, at all cost evade his stun, then you have a good chance of winning a trade. You silence is your biggest advantage, use it to interrupt his combo. Lots of 63.png players tend to build HP for tankiness, consider going aggressive early, since he is better at teamfighting.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 7/10

Huge pain in the a$$, she can poke all day long with her poison. If she hits you with cassiopeianoxiousblast.png, she gets a 3 sec move speed buf, don't bother to engage in this time frame.

Her cassiopeiatwinfang.png is set to a .5 sec cooldown if she hits you while being poisoned, so when engaging, avoid getting poisoned.

Her cassiopeiapetrifyinggaze.png only stuns you if you are facing her, otherwise the ability will slow you.

VS

Diana

Medium

Difficulty: 4/10 - 8/10

Can go either way. She has really high burst like you - but you have a silence. You should engage yourself the moment you turn level 6 and not even give her a chance to retaliate. When finishing her, think about her shield!

Most of the time, you can dodge her dianaQ.png by walking towards her.

VS

Ekko

Easy

Difficulty: 3/10 - 5/10

If you manage to evade his stun - you win. If you don't.... let's say it's going to be hard winning the trade.

You avoid most of his 's by not standing in between your minions. Early on, his waveclear costs a lot of mana, push to make him use it on the minions instead of you.

His ult is really annoying, but, like 44.png says, "They can't say no if they are [silenced]".

VS

Ezreal

Hard

Difficulty: 6/10 - 10/10

Really strong poke, high burst (if he hits) and annoying slow (most 81.png players build 3025.png). In late game, it'll be really difficult to catch up to him. Use your items and garenslash3.png, maybe 4.png to engage and he is dead.

Early on, he has not enough mana to poke for an extended span of time, make us of this and get some kills.

VS

Fizz

Hard

Difficulty: 6/10 - 9/10

The little fish stick has enormous burst and extreme mobility - slippery is the right word.
He has no real poke, but high all-in potential. Pre-6, you can easily dominate him and/or zone him from farming.
When he hits you with fizzmarinerdoom.png, activate your garencommand.png right before it triggers, it will take a good load of damage off of your shoulders (pun intended).

His auto attacks deal increasing damage the lower your health gets - don't fight with low health.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

Difficulty: 7/10 - 10/10

The definition of annoyance. His turrets deal most of his damage, so if you actually want to engage or prepare a gank, kill all of them. Dodge his ch1concussiongrenade.png so you don't get stunned.

In fights, he will normally set up his (smiteable) upgraded turret which deals stupid amounts of damage. Wait til it runs out.

VS

LeBlanc

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 6/10

Her burst is really high, just like yours. Don't get hit & rooted by leblancsoulshackle.png, this may spell your doom.
If you wants to combo you, turn on garenslash3.png and try to hit her the moment she jumps on you. When silenced, the can't jump back to her pad. Then garenbladestorm.png to retaliate.

VS

Syndra

Hard

Difficulty: 6/10 - 9/10

Rather difficult due to her high range. Dodge her stun at all cost (keep track of her orbs on the ground).
If you do manage to get your garenslash3.png on her, you win the trade.

VS

Zed

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 7/10

Dodge his zedQ.png, don't stand in his shadows, you know, standard stuff.
But, when he ults you, use garenslash3.png so he only can use basic attacks. proceed to trash him with your own combo.

Skins Back to Top

Garen_SchreckensritterSkin.jpg

You want to make your enemies shiver in fear - this is the only skin you'll need. Trust me, I'm an engineer.

Playstyle Back to Top

Step 1) Spam you laugh (Ctrl+4)
Step 2) Make your enemies tilt with your absurd damage and emote spam
Step 3) Spin 2 win
Step 4) ???
Step 5) Profit

Early Game

Farm & Trade (It almost sounds like a mini game xD). This is what you should do early on. Since you don't have the ability to poke, frequently trade and in the meantime, sustain yourself with your passive and pots.

Mid Game

Careful, they will begin focusing you. Don't get caught out of position or you will die quickly. In teamfights, 4.png is your best fried. Dive the backline and instakill at least their strongest carry or more, if possible.
Help your team securing objectives - this wins you games.
Don't neglect your farm though.

Late game

Much like mid game, join your team and with those teamfights. Let your tank(s) engage and follow up. Kill every carry you see and victory is yours.

Why play AD Garen? Pros & Cons Back to Top

Pros

  • Easy to play, easy to master
  • High movement speed = Hard to catch
  • Extremely high burst no squishy can withstand
  • Really fun to play
  • No one expects the bana- eeh the AD 86.png.

Cons

  • Not the best/no instant engage
  • You will probably get flamed. Deal with it.

Take the reasons above and decide for yourself if it's worth giving a try (Believe me, it is).

The main reason and whole purpose why I created this guide: Fun. Try to have some.

Be fast, be deadly, be cunning - be the AD Garen!
