Summoner Spells Back to Top

flash tp is best for most games but ignite can be taken in some lanes when necessary e.g Mundo and trynda

Masteries Back to Top

With Gnar there are 3 different good keystone masteries right now. fervor of battle, thunderlords and grasp of the undying. My favorite of the 3 is fervor of battle due to how easily it can be stacked by mini gnar especially after you have finished BC or Frozen mallet, on the other hand I think grasp may be the most popular as it benefits mega gnar much more and although it does not do much early in mini gnar with the low base health its still very powerful in lane and will start doing some damage once you've stacked some health. Thunderlords is still ok due to its synergy with hyper however it tends to be less useful late game as you wont be getting much bonus ad/ap for it so its damage will fall off.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Standard start
    Alternate start
    Defensive start. (not often needed)
    early sunfire

Core Items

Mercs - High cc / Ap Tabi - High Ad
    Good rush vs Ap lanes
Black cleaver is a good rush for gnar as he gets a huge powerspike in dmg once its finished
Standard combo with bc, endless chase and kiting

Situational Items

Vs high health (some cheese vs mundo and other tanks)
    Other Good items desc' below
Good fun to use but isn't very good when you can just build black cleaver
    alternative to BC
    Standard mr items
Great for bad ad based matchups and builds rage quickly
3139_32.png  Vs annoying cc such as malzahar, warwick or lissandra

3026_32.png Can be good if you have build 3 dmg items and are carrying the team

3075_32.png Destroys full ad teams and builds rage faster (mega gnar also has one of highest base armor stats in the game)

3083_32.png Hp helps gain more dmg on the E and the passive is very useful

3156_32.png Finish from the early game hexdrinker vs ap top

3022_32.png Frozen mallet on gnar will make it almost impossible for single targets to escape. Good for getting picks however it is not as useful for teamfights

VS

Azir

Medium

Unlike many other top laners he can trade equally with you. He is very squishy however and you can burst him if you hit 6 first or if you catch him with ult down

Item rush :

3155_32.png or 3211_32.png

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

Cass deals huge damage if she hits any poison on you. Back off from the wave the moment she hit q or w or you will lose a huge amount of health. In the brief moment that her spells are on cooldown or if she runs out of mana then try to trade back with procs of hyper. You can burst her quite quickly in mega form but if you do not have enough damage then back off as gnar will lack the sustained damage to continue fighting.

item rush:

3155_32.png or 3065_32.png

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Gnar can be very good vs cho due to the percentage health dmg on the w. Just try to proc w in trade while avoiding the scream. Careful not to be burst in mini gnar.

Items:

3134_32.png or 3153_32.png or 3211_32.png

VS

Darius

Medium

Ok now darius can really do some damage if you are mini gnar at the wrong time. Just try not to be hit by the Pull while in mini form and you can try to get kills during mega, just watch the number of his stacks on you and play aggressive during his cooldowns as you can stay out his range and kite him during this time.

Items:

3068.png or 3071.png

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

This lane is often fairly easy for gnar. Don't be hit by too many cleavers and try not to be baited by his ult. Proc hyper as much as possible to chunk his health and remember to take 14.png

Items:

3134_32.png or 3153_32.png or 3211_32.png

VS

Fiora

Hard

The post 6 damage fiora does to mini gnar is insane. Try to poke her pre 6 as much as possible once her dashes are down and be careful not to let her parry your auto attacks. A 9-21-0 mastery page is best in this lane along with some armor marks and randuins/thornmail rush.

Items:

3022.png or 3068_32.png

VS

Gangplank

Medium

With the rework many gangplank players will focus on farming with Q. His mid game is super strong as he can get a lot of gold from the passive. when you have ult and full rage, try to bait his cc removal before going aggressive with GNAR!

Items:

3134_32.png or 3143_32.png

VS

Garen

Easy

Garen can be kited while in mini gnar so long as you do not get silenced. Just be careful of his ult while you are in mini form, it will hurt.

Items:

3134_32.png or 3153_32.png or 3143_32.png

VS

Irelia

Hard

Irelia deals lots of damage to mini gnar if hop is on cooldown. To avoid taking damage in mini form, hop as soon is she uses Q to dash to you and try to proc hyper at least once. You can kill her in Mega form just don't tank to many empowered auto attacks.

Items:

3134_32.png or 3143_32.png

VS

Jarvan IV

Hard

Jarvan top can deal insane damage pre 6 and post 6 to mini gnar. Try to avoid his EQ combo when possible. Post 6 if you are mini gnar try to save hop until Jarvan ults, in mega gnar you can ult him into his own wall.

Items:

3068.png or 3071.png

VS

Jax

Medium

You can bully jax a lot early. Just proc hyper whenever he goes to farm and use hop to avoid his stun. Post 6 you can use GNAR! to dodge stun whilst dealing damage. Just try to be careful of his burst to you in mini gnar, If he hits stun he will kill you very quickly.

Items:

3134_32.png or 3143_32.png or 3068_32.png

VS

Kassadin

Easy

Kassadin doesn't do much pre 6. Because of this just bully him as much as you can before his lvl6. His Q shield is almost useless since only hyper deals magic damage. You should be able to burst kass very quickly post 6 just try not to let him dodge your ult with riftwalk.

Items:

3134_32.png or 3072_32.png or 3211_32.png or 3155_32.png

VS

Kennen

Medium

As kennen is also ranged his trades are quite equal to gnar. Try to avoid fighting with marks of storm and be careful fighting post 6 while in mini gnar. Kennen is very squishy until he get zhonyas so mega gnar burst damage is huge during this time. Be careful to not use ult during his zhonyas.

item rush:
3155_32.png and 3111_32.png

VS

Lissandra

Easy

Despite being ranged liss is often very easy to trade with pre 6. Boomerang has more range than her Q and if she misses one then feel free to get a proc or two of hyper for some more damage. Watch out for her burst to you in mini form post 6 but your mega gnar will be equally devastating to her.

3155_32.png 3111_32.png or 3140_32.png

VS

Malphite

Easy

Malphite is another lane opponent who you can bully lots early. Just be careful of his ult damage while you are mini. If you get ahead in this lane you can completely bully malphite out of getting any farm.

Items:

3134_32.png or 3153_32.png or 3102_32.png

VS

Maokai

Easy

Maokai will not do a huge amount of damage compared to other tops, He should not be able to kill you in this matchup without jungle attention. An early frozen mallet can help to kill him if he over extends but otherwise some mr/dmg can be better.

3022_32.png or 3155_32.png

VS

Renekton

Easy

Can kite renekton so long as you don't get hit by the stun. You can often trade quite well with him in mega gnar especially when he has abilities on cooldown. Do not let him bait you with the heal from his ult.

Items:

3134_32.png or 3153_32.png or 3143_32.png or 3068_32.png

VS

Riven

Medium

Rivens post 6 burst will often 100-0 you if you are caught with low rage. Just run as soon as she ults and try to kill her once you have mega gnar. If you are worried about dying take 9-21-0 masteries and armor marks.

Items:

3071.png or 3068.png

VS

Ryze

Medium

Ryze got some nerfs in 5.12 which prevents him from snare locking like before get mercs and MR as soon as possible as he relies on the snare still for his combo. As soon as you see him have full passive or use ult run away as he can possibly 100-0 you if ahead.

item rush:
3111_32.png and 3155_32.png

VS

Singed

Easy

Depends on the singed player. If he stays in lane just poke him, there is nothing he can really do. If he tries to proxy farm then you can try to gather your goons (Ask jungler to come or maybe mid) to kill him before he executes or runs . Just keep your cool and DON'T CHASE SINGED!

Items:

3134_32.png or 3153_32.png

VS

Teemo

Medium

Screw Teemo -_-. Try to wait for his blinding dart to be on cooldown then trade with hyper. You can burst him very quickly post 6 in mega form. Don't get baited by mushrooms or blinding darts.

Items:

3211_32.png or 3155_32.png or 3134_32.png

VS

Wukong

Medium

EQ combo can be annoying early. Just try to proc hyper as many times as possible before his E is off cooldown. You can use GNAR! to get him away from you during his ult.

Items:

3134_32.png or 3143_32.png

VS

Yasuo

Hard

usually used in LCS as a counter pick to gnar. Yasuo has a lot of out play potential by dodging mega gnar w and ult and he can wind wall boomerang for a very long cooldown. The lane is quite snowbally for whoever gets ahead so get armor as quick as possible to deal with is damage.

MINI AND MEGA Back to Top

MINI GNAR

Laning: Mini gnar is a huge lane bully and can destroy anyone that lacks dashes or range. Proc hyper as much as                        possible in trades and be careful of high burst or CC during this time.

Teamfights: Mini gnar is not very useful in teamfights. Because of this possition like an adc until you have built up                        rage. If you go front line too soon you will be burst before getting mega gnar.

Combos:  Standard trade - Auto-Q-Auto
               Kiting/running trade- E backwards-Q-Auto-Auto

MEGA GNAR

Laning: pre 6 you are much weaker however can still out trade just about any melee top laner due to your high base                stats. Post 6 your burst can kill anyone that is squishy or low on health. When Ahead you can 1v2 their                       jungler with a good ult.

Teamfights: Your key goal is to hit the best ult you can. Position it using either flash or your transform E double                             hop. Most fight it is best to use the on their frount line to be on top of their back line. When ahead you                     1v2 their Midlaner and ADC with your combo just be careful not to get Kited.

Combos: pre 6 - E-W-Q
               Post 6 - Transform E/Flash - R-Q-Auto-W-Q-Auto

Controlling rage Back to Top

Gnar build rage in two ways

1) Dealing damage
2) Taking damage

In lane you are strongest at two points. Turning into mega gnar and turning back to mini gnar. This is because gnar deals high multi or single target burst but lacks the sustained single target damage that mini gnar has because of his very low base attack speed. Therefore you have the best of both worlds during transformations. When turning to mega you can begin chasing with hyper which can get you into position for a transform hop into ult. This is usually best when ahead in lane, vs a squishy opponent or if they are low. Turning back into mini gnar is great when you want to start kiting an opponent but can also be very useful for baiting. Many people will go aggressive onto you when you go mini as they know that you are squishy and cannot build rage, since mega gnar W and R can both be channeled during the transform they often be surprised by you using these abilities at this time. You can then finish the kill by chasing in mini form.

Before team fights you need enough rage to transform at a desired time. To build up your rage you can stand at the front of you team attacking minions and poking with boomerang. When rage is high enough stand at the back a little to try to avoid poke since it will cause you to transform at the wrong time. Move back to the front line of your team as soon as a fight breaks out. Rage can built built up very quickly with either sunfire cape or thornmail

Champs that work well with gnar Back to Top

59_64.png The Gnarvan combo makes it easy to hit good ults

61_64.png Ori and gnar are able to 2v5 a whole team with two good ults. Just be careful not to throw anyone away from the shockwave with GNAR!

55_64.png Gnar makes it super easy for kat to clean up

21_64.png Good gnar + mf ult = won teamfight

32_64.png The stun time and damage between gnar and amumu makes teamfights very strong.

40_64.png Janna disengage can be very helpful if the enemy engages at a bad time (when you've just lost mega gnar)

Animation Canceling Back to Top

Animation canceling on gnar can be used to hit abilities at unexpected times (mostly ult)or just allow you to used abilities without having your movement cut.
To do this use hop at 97< rage on anything that can give the second bounce as you are in the air spam the ability you want to animation cancel and gnar will transform while still in the air.
Here is an in game example and a video to help explain it playbutton.png
