Summoner Spells Back to Top

Pretty much the only summoners you should take if you go top. Flash 4.png can't be replaced because it's very useful for positioning, especially in mega form. Teleport 12.png is still good even though the channel time was nerfed because it can get you back to lane quickly if you make a mistake and it gives opportunities to make plays for your team. I personally don't like it that much but that's just because I'm bad at setting up coordinated TPs. You can take other summoners based on preference but you can't go wrong with these.

New Runes Back to Top

Summon%20Aerie.png?width=64 Summon Aery - Great because of the consistent poke it gives you, especially in lane. Adds on about 1k+ damage by the end of the game

Nullifying%20Orb.png?width=32 Nullifying Orb - I take this over Ultimate Hat because your ult CD hardly matters and it's hard to stack up

Celerity.png?width=32 Celerity - Good for kiting/chasing and has synergy with your W and Cleaver

Gathering%20Storm.png?width=32 Gathering Storm - More scaling and I like it better since Scorch was nerfed

Bone%20Plating.png?width=32Bone Plating & 5abd57da0f30230001f3edd9?width=32 Chrysalis - Helps to survive early game all-ins

Other options:

Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=64 Press the Attack - Gives better DPS than Aery, but not as consistent in lane

Grasp%20of%20the%20Undying.png?width=64 Grasp of the Undying - For more tank-oriented builds

Maxing Q gnarq.png first is best for cooldown reduction, damage, and slow increase.

gnarw.png is second for more % health damage, plus you can use Wallop in mega form more than once with reduced cooldown.

I usually max E gnare.png last because you only really use it once per engage/escape, but you actually get 2.5 seconds off the cooldown and 10% attack speed per point you put into it. The extra damage is quite good too but you don't always hop onto a champion. I'd consider maxing it second against squishies.

Take E gnare.png 2nd if you're against someone who can jump on you.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Standard start
vs ap where you want to rush hexdrinker
vs auto-attacker/ADC top where you are not rushing ninja tabi
vs strong ad where you want to rush a tank item/ninja tabi

Core Items

First Item Options (some people get a tank item first, which can work as well)
    Main Armor Items
    Main MR Items
    Boots

Situational Items

    Situational Defense
    Situational Offense

1054.png & 1029.png Pussy items one and two. You can start these if you're scared, and there are some matchups like that (notably Pantheon), but Longsword and Doran's Blade will help you trade back in lane with increased AD.

3009.png Cheaper; usually get to snowball a little more. Sometimes you can buy these early when you have just enough gold and they'll help you kite. Other boots are preferred, but this can be very good against certain team comps, and you can always sell them lategame.

3047.png/3111.png Tabi's are almost always better unless they have like 1 AD.

3071.png Gnar's best damage item. I usually buy this second (after Frozen Mallet) but it also gives a crazy powerspike when rushed. You don't have to get this if you're going full tank but you'll miss out on a lot of good
stats.

3143.png My rule is to get this when the enemy team has another crit user besides the ADC. Otherwise, I think Thornmail 3075.png is better vs auto-attack champions.

3742.png Gives more chase potential, but generally outclassed by other armor items. They'd have to have mostly AD casters and you'd consider Sunfire Cape 3068.png over this first, but it's still not unviable.

3065.png Great MR item to build at any point of the game. Even better if you have other sources of healing for its passive.

3194.png I don't find myself buying this often, but against a fed Teemo, Cassiopeia, Azir, etc. it's worth it.

3156.png Great buy when you can afford to be a little less tanky and they have an AP-heavy comp. Hexdrinker 3155.png can help as a first buy vs AP, but you usually don't upgrade until your last item.

3022.png Usually what I buy first nowadays because you can chase people forever once you get it. While it doesn't offer as much damage as Cleaver, the ultility more than makes up for it.

3053.png Since the price increase, I prefer to buy Frozen Mallet. It can be decent if you need to survive a ton of burst or you're the main initiator for your team.

3026.png Way less viable since it was updated to be more ADC-oriented. Still effective enough even if you go full tank because it buys time and you can always sell it while it's on cooldown.

3068.png Comparable to Dead Man's Plate, but it was buffed enough to where you can buy this if you live long enough in the middle of fights to gain value from the immolate passive. Makes you generate rage faster so it's not the best aagins kitey/poke comps.

3075.png Rushing Bramble Vest 3076.png is pretty insane vs a lot of sustain top laners. Upgrade to this at any point. Very good if their ADC didn't buy lifesteal yet and it's a lot better since it gives health and has a smoother build path.

3512.png Nerfed enough that I won't be buying this as much. Much more situational. Decent buy when behind to control waves or split-push.

3139.png If their team if full of hard CC/suppresses/cancer/etc. and Merc Treads/Banshee's Veil aren't enough. Upgrade from QSS last.

3153.png I only get this when I split push often, or when I need the damage to kill some health-stackers. Much more useful in mini, and was also nerfed. Can still be useful in a few situations, so go for it if you have some kills and want damage.

3083.png This item has been seeing less play from patch to patch, mostly because there's little reason to buy it over Frozen Mallet or Sterak's. Sometimes you can buy it to counter poke/penetration/true damage. Usually only for full tank builds.

3193.png Almost exclusively for full tank builds. You can pop its active right after an engage to help survive.

3046.png I like getting this as a 3rd item if I don't need a major tank item yet. 3022.png > 3071.png > 3046.png > 3812.png is my go-to build when I'm very far ahead.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Kiting helps a lot, as it always does. His aatroxE.png is his only poke and it's easy to dodge at long range. However, if he lands his aatroxQ.png knockup you're usually in trouble, so avoiding it is cruicial. Look to get Frozen Mallet and try to gnarE.png to dodge his aatroxQ.png.

VS

Darius

Hard

Only reason I put him in the hard category is because of his early pressure. He can zone the shit out of you with dariuscleave.png and by threatening his dariusaxegrabcone.pnggnarE.png  second is mandatory. Either save it for after you get pulled or predict his engage. Sometimes you can use it to get closer to him to avoid the sweetspot of his dariuscleave.png, but you have to be very prepared to fight him with mega form. Overall, you should outscale him with your presence in teamfights. I still go with 3071.png  first, but it forces you to play like a pussy until you find an opening. Seriously, respect his damage, especially if he took 14.png. If you manage to kill him in lane, he's not as scary because kiting become much easier. His damage will always be an issue until lategame. 3022.png and typical armor items are useful.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Hard category if you take 12.png14.png gives you a chance to kill him in lane, but he'll be unkillable once he gets items. Basically dodge infectedcleavermissilecast.png in lane or get punished for taking 14.pnggnarE.png once he gets close of course and don't overextend because he can chase you and slow you. You can go 1036.png into 3155.png if you want, as he does a fair amount of magic damage. 3153.png is ok in this matchup if you didn't go 3156.png (or you're fed.)

VS

Ekko

Easy

Not too common, but sometimes this nigga shows up in the top lane. You'll be trying to avoid his ekkoE.png range so he can't get on your dick to ekkoQ.png. If he lands ekkoQ.png, he'll be able to chase, which isn't fun. ekkoW.png will only hit you if you have brain tumors, so really just watch out for the abilities that can interrupt your kiting. ekkoR.png is easy to avoid if you pay attention to the indicator, like with ekkoW.png. Just keep moving when you fight him to avoid those abilities. Other than that, he's easy. If he builds damage, he'll have trouble killing you later in the game. If he builds tanky, he pretty much should never kill you, but you'll have to work to kill him. Regardless of what he builds, 3155.png is very useful in lane.

VS

Fiora

Hard

Pretty annoying because you can't poke her for free. Her fioraq.png will gapclose while her fiorariposte.png slows you and blocks an auto-attack. Also mind which direction her passive is facing so she can't proc it easily. Use gnarE.png before she gets on you, or use it to dodge her fiorariposte.png if you're fast enough. She can definitely hunt you down if you waste your gnarE.png, so use it wisely (like you should always be doing.) Try to keep track of her cooldowns to punish, and bait the fiorariposte.png. These items are typically good against her: 3022.png3075.png, and 3143.png. She's in the hard category because it's easy to mess up against her; if you play passive enough it should be fine early, but this matchup generally requires a lot of game knowledge to do well in.

VS

Fizz

Hard

Quite literally homosexual. He has multiple tools to gapclose with fizzpiercingstrike.png and fizzjump.png, so you can't get close to him without taking a dickton of damage. This is even worse when he has fizzmarinerdoom.png pressure, so you have to stay VERY far away if you want to live, even under tower. You pretty much have to gnarQ.png him and the farm the entire laning phase. Mega isn't very useful because he outmaneuvers you instead of outdamging you, like in mini. However, mega form baits can be good for if he tries to dive you (and he definitely will try.) Rarely, you can find smart trades with his cooldowns up, but remember that you lose a trade if  you get hit with any of his abilities because they chain into each other. 1036.png start into 3155.png is great, even if he builds AD. I'm considering 1033.png start, but it just looks weak as balls. You don't fight him until you are tanky enough to survive his burst with stuff like 3053.png and 3102.png. You should never be able to kite him effectively, but sometimes you can win fights in mini if you are strong enough. In mega, bait out his fizzjump.png before you use gnarR.png.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Can go in either direction. Trades are won by dodging raisemorale.png and killing them before putting some damage on him. His gay-ass removescurvy.png will get in the way in mega form, so be mindful of them. You can play pretty aggressively in the neutral state as long as you know you won't be hit by a raisemorale.png3143.png saves lives. Did I mention to dodge raisemorale.png? ALert your team of his cannonbarrage.png at level 6.

VS

Garen

Medium

First off, he's really hard to kill because of his garenslash3.png and garencommand.png. His garenslash3.png is especially annoying because it is his escape, gap-closer, and one-way ticket into your anal cavity. So pretty much, don't get silenced and you'll survive the laning phase. Also, your poke against him will be healed from his passive, so you should be trying to poke him very often to prevent this. Spacing properly and managing gnarE.png is key (it always is, but 86.png is a fag.) Consider 14.png as well, but I usually won't take it unless the rest of the team has a lot of heals.

VS

Illaoi

Easy

Easy if you dodge her illaoiE.png because it punishes you so hard for getting hit by 1 skillshot. Being in mini is great because she's pretty easy to kite, and you can dodge her illaoiQ.png and illaoiE.png more easily. You can also take out her tentacles much more safely in mini. At 6, you will probably lose a straight up fight with her in mega because she'll heal a lot, but in mini you can chunk her down to the point where you can finish her off. Frozen Mallet is good as always.

VS

Irelia

Hard

She's kiteable, and you can bully her early. Be careful of her lv 7/9 and when she gets 3078.png/3057.png, as those are her powerspikes. Watch for her to miss her ireliagatotsu.png reset; it's a 15 second CD otherwise. Also, mind her 1-2 second stun with ireliaequilibriumstrike.pngbecause this and her ireliagatotsu.png will mess up your kiting. Take gnarE.png second and RESPECT HER DAMAGE. She really isn't deserving of the hard category if you play safe in mini at the right times, while adding some pressure in mega if you can. I just put this in the hard category because she's one of those "textbook" counters. Definitely winnable to a point where you can snowball.

VS

Jax

Medium

Similar to laning against 39.png, but I think 24.png is a little easier. You can get early poke on him, but he's scary at level 3 unless you can space well and time gnarE.png perfectly to avoid the jaxcounterstrike.png stun. If you can't do this, playing passive is ok. However, he will outscale you and you'll miss your chance to kill him early on. If you kill him early, you can play more aggressively than you think (unless he has items.) Also, try to save your gnarQ.png and gnarE.png to proc your gnarW.png while fighting him in mini while he uses his jaxcounterstrike.png.

VS

Kled

Medium

Easy to kite as long as he doesn't land his kledQ.png and kledE.png. In early laning, you can poke him pretty freely because you can just run out of kledQ.png if it hits you, but once he gets level 3 it's really dangerous to get hit by because he can gapclose. Look for trades when his cooldowns are up and poke safely to dismount him. Sometimes you don't want to fight him in mega while he's mounted because he can chase you and land kledQ.png easily; you can also burst him and kill him once he dismounts other times. 3022.png and 3047.png are good early.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

It's hard for her to land her abilities, especially lissandraQ.png while you have mini form. Once you rush your 3155.png, you shouldn't die to her solo so easily. 127.png can set up ganks for her jungler with relative ease, so watch for her lissandraE.png if she uses it aggressively.

VS

Malphite

Medium

Kinda like 36.png in lane, except he can target his poke seismicshard.png. Poking him back is a little difficult because of his passive, but you can poke much more reliably than him. Minion aggro can be a problem in these tanky matchups, too. 1036.png into 3155.png first is viable because he can't kill you once you get it, but 3071.png is especially good when they build armor. If you are ahead, 3022.png can be worth looking into as a second item.

VS

Nasus

Easy
Should be simple enough to poke him in lane. You can even take gnarE.png level 4 if you know you're safe. Your only problem in lane should be the jungler if he sets up a gank with wither.png. You can overextend a little with your minion wave behind you to gnarE.png out of ganks. Just watch out for minion aggro in lane, space well (taking in account his wither.png and siphoningstrikenew.png damage, and be careful fighting him later on in the game.

VS

Ornn

Medium

He's pretty much just going to be tanky and annoying, but laning against him is easy as long as you don't get too greedy.

VS

Pantheon

Hard
80.png is just a hard lane for a lot of champions. You can't kite safely knowing that he has pantheon_leapbash.png, and pantheon_throw.png damage adds up just because it's targeted. You can't even win trades with your range advantage because of pantheonpassive.png1029.png 2003.pngx4 is a good start because you won't be able to dodge his pantheon_throw.pngs, and you should just focus on outscaling him. A good time to fight him is at lv 6 in mega. You should have no trouble killing him in the mid-late game with your tankiness and stickiness.

VS

Poppy

Medium

You win at early levels because range. Be sure to step on her passive shield thing if you can, and be especially careful in mini form. She can be quite annoying while you're mini once she gets a poppyheroiccharge.png stun because then you'll take a lot of damage due to the rest of her kit. Try to gnarE.png before poppyparagonofdemacia.png comes out. She'll be really tanky all of a sudden after a few minutes, so getting 3071.png is good as always.

VS

Quinn

Hard

Like most adc tops, they outtrade you and bully you early. 1029.png or 1054.png start. Early 3047.png is great unless they have a shitton of cc on their team somehow with 2 adcs. Pretty much never trade in mini form unless you know her cooldowns. Mega form is a good time to fight if you can gapclose, but I usually just play passively until midgame. It gets way easier after the laning phase because you can burst them with mega form. Also her quinnE.png can interrupt your gnarE.png. Alert your team of her quinnR.png roams.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Care for his level 2, especially if he hit it before you get your gnarE.png. Otherwise, just gnarE.png  once you see him renektonsliceanddice.png or you'll take a lot of damage. It's easy to punish him after he uses renektonsliceanddice.png as well. You can start 1029.png if you just wanna play it safe until you outscale him, but 1055.png  is preferred.

VS

Riven

Medium

On the easy side if you can kite effectively, but she can cheese you early on if you have autism. Pretty typical "gnarE.png second" lane, but be careful for her third riventricleave.png which might cancel your hop and just keep track of her cooldowns in general. She'll play aggro while you're in mini usually unless she wastes her abilities. Frozen mallet is great as a first item. Just one of those matchups where the skill of the player really affects the difficulty.

VS

Shen

Easy

He can't kill you easily unless you really mess up, but it's a little difficult to kill him in return. He actually does quite a bit of damage with shenvorpalstar.png, and his shenshadowdash.png can cause you to take minion aggro. Playing around his shenfeint.png is important, especially in mini. I like to save my gnarQ.png until he uses is so I can keep up my DPS. Alert your team when he has shenstandunited.png  and possibly 12.png  after him. 14.png  can be good as well in rare cases.

VS

Singed

Easy

Every Singed I face must have downs or something, because they suck dick. You can poke him for free, and you should win trades easily. Gnar can kinda get away with chasing Singed if you're good at maneuvering. I start 1036.png2003.pngx3 into 3155.png. Aggressive lane, so mind the minion aggro. It's also worth mentioning that he'll probably stay top to try to divert your team after you shit on him in the laning phase, but you should prioritize roaming over stopping him in most cases.

VS

Teemo

Medium

Annoying to say the least. He will outtrade you with blindingdart.png  if your gnarQ.png  is down and he can get away with poking you for free unless you have gnarE.png  ready (take 2nd.) I'd say the laning phase is about 40-60 in his favor, but you can definitely be smart with your trades and be patient to outscale him (you outscale harder if he builds AP.) Once you rush your 3155.png, it gets easier (get this even if he's building AD.) Should be easy to burst him with mega at level 6. Past that point, just watch for his bantamtrap.png and buy 2043.png3341.png can be worth it as well if you don't need the wards.

VS

Trundle

Easy

You can bully him earlygame if you space properly, which isn't very difficult. Once he levels his trundleE.png, make sure you save your gnarE.png after he uses it so your jump doesn't get interrupted. He will be able to fight you once he gets some items, but you can still kite him in mini. 3022.png will help kite, but it's not essential. Also, try to not get baited by his trundleR.png. In lategame, he'll be hard to kill and you shouldn't 1v1 him, but you can play smart enough to avoid that.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Always hated this mothafucka. RNG anyone? You can poke early like usual until he gets slashcast.png and mockingshout.png, in which case you gnarE.png. Simple kiting. At 6, it all becomes mindgames with his undyingrage.png (pretty dumb ability if you ask me.) If you think you can poke him down enough to burst him, go for it. However, his damage and chasing potential are ridiculous, so you gotta RESPECT. 3075.png3143.png,3022.png, and 14.png are things you should consider going for against him. As usual, you can start 1029.png into 3047.png if you're scared, but I rarely do this.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

He can win early because his poke is more reliable than yours and he has sustain. You'll be forced out of his vladimirtransfusion.png and vladimirtidesofblood.png range unless you want to take free damage. Once he uses them for farm, try to go for a gnarW.png proc trade during their cooldown. If he uses vladimirsanguinepool.png, you can generally go in, but he can be hard to finish off. Also use your mega W Stun (Whallop) before gnarR.png to bait out his vladimirsanguinepool.png. Sometimes take 14.png, but avoid it if you can. I always start 1036.png 2003.pngx3 into 3155.png because you start winning once you get it. 3009.png are good against him, but you should consider if it's the best choice against the rest of the enemy team as well. You also have a bigger impact in teamfights with your gnarR.png's CC compared to 8.png. Since his update, he does a lot more damage, but you can kill him if you survive early.

VS

Wukong

Medium

Hey look, someone who can jump on you! gnarE.png management is crucial as always. Use it before he uses monkeykingnimbus.png if you can, or just use it to make space in general. monkeykingspintowin.png is annoying at lv 6, but you have gnarR.png, so fighting in mega makes things easier. Starting 1029.png is ok because you can't really avoid his monkeykingnimbus.png early on so you'll like the sustain in lane, but 1055.png is just a stronger early item. 2043.png counters monkeykingdecoy.png. I think this is basically like the 5.png matchup except 62.png has stealth.

VS

Xin Zhao

Medium

Typical kite lane. If he jumps on you while your gnarE.png is on CD, it'll hurt. Respect his damage, but be sure to return some back to him with your range advantage. Take gnarE.png second.

VS

Yasuo

Hard

Really annoying because of that fking yasuoW.png. It's also hard to kite him, especially in minion waves. Play passively, going in to poke when you know he can't jump on you (look for smart trades.) As for items, pick up a  3143.png if he starts to become a threat. The 3071.png + 3022.png into 3075.png is really good as well if you have enough gold.

Introduction Back to Top

My name is Grife, and I'm just some nigga who plays mostly normals with autists. I've peaked at Plat 3, but who gives a shit about ranks. Gnar has been one of my favorite champions to play since his release because of his unique and sporadic playstyle. I always find myself coming back to play him, and it never gets old. This guide is to help you find success with this lil' mothafucka' and have fun while sexually assaulting your enemies! If you enjoyed this guide, I'd appreciate your support through likes, comments, and suggestions to improve. Also add me <3 (no homo.) ;&

Tiny Tips Back to Top

Always retrieve your boomerang if you can, as it will maximize your DPS, just don't go too far out of your way to get it. This also applies in mega form for your boulders.

Hop also provides attack speed, so you can use it to take down towers and clear waves faster.

In Mega form, auto attack in between every spell cast to maximize damage.
