Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Really good start against true damage champs, helps soak up a lot of damage plus 2 potions to sustain yourself in lane. Build into phage with 750g with your first back or Jaurims Fist at 800g
Really good when easy against easy matchups or you know you will have pressure and can bully your laner. Build into phage with 750g with your first back or Jaurims Fist at 800g
Really good against ranged AD especially with this new 3 ad Meta and builds into a lot of armour items if against a heavy AD enemy team comp.
    Core Boots
Good for early trade and sustain in lane even for mid and late game nice burning feel to it kappa ;)

Core Items

CORE OUTPUT DAMAGE Almost all matchups you rush Phage then Frozen Mallet or Deadmans Plate. Black cleaver was nerfed in the preseason less HP so not optimal to finish it first because by the time you have everyone has a power spike and you don’t have enough HP for team fights.
    Core defense items

Situational Items

Good for when you decide to group and still want a lane pushing
This items is perfect for Gnar for everything it offers. The AD, good enough to make split pushing easier and more damage in fights. The HP, Gnar has a terrible early game because he has low HP base stats and this solves that problem (which is why this is more viable then black cleaver since the HP on it got nerfed). The passive, the slow on this item makes Gnar so aggressive because the way about it is his Q procs a slow and a W stack then you can auto and get those W stacks going while the items passive procs slows too so its like if you don’t have CDR to spam your Q you can chase with autos. Late game Gnar becomes a really good gap closer and really good at chasing down enemys.
Core armour item. Has good stats giving a lot of HP and armour which works really well for him, the passive works well with Gnars ability to chase down targets because. It gives movement speed and procs a slow and damage on hit after 100 stacks.
Gives Gnar the CDR he needs to spam Q enough HP to make the items worth buying and its passive is really good for chasing down enemies (proc w passive plus the items passive and you get a really fast yordel chasing you with Q and autos).

Normal Almost any Matchup

Phage -> Frozen Mallet -> Deadman’s Plate ->Boots of Swiftness ->Black Cleaver -> Banshees veil -> Steraks Gauge

Heavy AD Matchup

Phage -> Frozen Mallet -> Deadman’s Plate ->Boots of Armor ->Randuins Omen -> Banshees veil -> Black Cleaver

Heavy AP Matchup

Hexdrinker  -> Frozen Mallet ->Mawllemous -> Banshees veil ->Mercury Boots  ->Black Cleaver -> Deadman Plate

Damage any Matchup

Phage -> Frozen Mallet ->Mawllemous -> Steraks Gauge -> Boots of Swiftness ->Black Cleaver -> Deadman’s Plate

Frozen mallet should be replaced late game if you need more defensive stats. These 3 core items are excellent on Gnar and are good in a solo queue environment as you make your own lead by winning lane and can easily translate somewhere else.

    Easy

VS

Darius

Easy

Really easy to counter darius as you can simply kite and proc W while he walks up to you

VS

Pantheon

Easy

The most easiest matchup there is in the top lane against any champ IMO panth is just not a good top laner at all. Its just a cheese champ and if you counter the cheese just by kiting, wining trades and playing safe its just too ez and he struggles fast and looks for roams

Intro Back to Top

This is a straight forward still in the making Gnar guide good for solo queue and in some aspects team games. This reflects my views and experience of the champ in which to me has shown good success rates.

Laning Phase Back to Top

Laning phase with Gnar is pretty easy once you get past you first 20 games and you’ve gone through a few matchups.

 Your objectives in lane are:

Lvl1/lvl2: You rush level 2 and push your laner out of lane while maxing W second freezing lane in the whole process, at this point, you’ve got him at least a few XP behind you and he’s at half health continue to pressure but RESPECT YOUR ENEMYS DAMAGE AND KNOW YOUR KITS LIMITS (if you wasted E don’t play agro farm with Q.

This brings a lot of pressure top, making the enemy jungler almost always come top so play smart and use your E when you are ganked only after the jungler or laner wastes there crowd control abilities as it cancels it.

Gold & XP: You have to get as much gold as you can so get really good at last hitting with him especially with this snow ball meta you need your core items asap if you want to pressure the map an translate objective and fights to winning opportunities. Soak up as much experience as you can while in top lane as you can roam and swap lanes ONLY IF you think you have either enough pressure or overextending enemies.

Meta: The better you farm the more chances you can recover from upsets of snowballing.

Getting ganked Back to Top

Gnar is almost impossible to gank if you use his kit right. At all points of the game gnar has a way to deal with jungle pressure.

Early game ganks

You use your E to jump over minions and get the second jump from it and you are safe. Do this after your enemies have used their stuns, snares or knock ups as this cancels his E.

Just FLASH +E

Mid game ganks (assuming you are still in lane by this point)

You can 1vs2, Gnar can easily 1vs2 as long as you are smart with your abilities and your play.

Just FLASH +E

ATTENTION: this is meant under the assumption that you aware of the enemy jungler coming, 80% of the time ganks made against you go in your favour. If the enemy jungler ganks and you die IT IS YOUR FAULT. You just weren’t paying enough attention to the map and your vision of it. If you are continuously playing agro you are drawing the enemy junglers attention (pressuring lane). Thus you must assume at all times, unless you have vision of him, that you will be ganked and therefore plan your counter play.

Map Control Back to Top

Split Push: this is situational in way where split pushing is obligatory Gnar does nothing without his items. So split push when:

-You’ve won lane (outer tier tower taken down) and you can’t go pass that points and your botlane still hasn’t taken there tower. Gnar has really good kit for 1vs2 so you can switch with your botlane and take bot tower and get your team that global gold for snowballing.

-No objectives or when fighting for objectives (you have TP) split push whenever the opportunity comes. You should only split push when objective are up  !!IF YOU HAVE TP!! Otherwise stay close and just hold lanes. This is all part of your judgment the better you know the game and consequences of certain things that happen around the map the better you are at making decisions.

Your damage is mostly done in laning phase, catching people off guard and a little bit in team fights after a certain point in the game you become more utility based than damage output based (in a 5vs5 scenario) so it is important, if you don’t have much burst teammates to finish the job after you use your CC, to try and global gold and use early leads to end the game.

TEAMFIGHTS Back to Top

Engaging

It your job to start an engage or follow up on someone’s engage. You get really accustomed to Gnar’s rage bar after a few dozen games so just practise and get used to the champ. You have E and FLASH to engage and after you channelled your mega form use ultimate to finish the Job or when the opportunity seems necessary.

Fights

Your job is to get the enemy damage dealers (carries) or peelers (tanks or CC champs) out of the equation of the fight. Mostly all the time if you CC the carries and keep the down the fights will end up in success.

Zoning

With the defensive stats you have zoning 2-3 champs while your team catches someone out is easy for Gnar so don’t be afraid to do so once you’ve got a few items.
