Summoner Spells Back to Top

Pretty common stuff nothing crazy, Smite for obvious reasons and flash allows for better gap closers and the safer overall choice. Also good for comboing with gragase.png. You can change the direction of your body slam by flashing right after you cast gragase.png into the direction you want to go. Good for catching people off guard and punishes greedy players who hold their flash.

New Runes Back to Top

So with the new runes I decided to of course take the Resolve tree since Gragas is indeed a frontliner/engage champion. Aftershock.png?width=32 works great with the amounts of CC that you can provide and it also makes you even more tankier so it is great for Gragas. Font%20of%20Life.png?width=32 helps keep your carries alive since it is basically the old Stoneborn Pact. Conditioning.png?width=32 helps you scale better into the game because after the first 10 minutes of the game you will gain so much more tank stats and since it is by 5%, the more tank items you buy the runes effectiveness gets even more valuable. Revitalize.png?width=32 is pretty good on Gragas since it applies to your own healing/shielding, this works with your Passive gragaspassive.png.  As for the secondary tree I am currently running the Domination tree to get some extra utility and map pressure. Zombie%20Ward.png?width=32 because I like to help ward and have more vision control than the enemy team. And Relentless%20Hunter.png?width=32 to help me get around the map faster/gank more etc.

Masteries Back to Top

12/0/18 is the much safer and more universal mastery page setup for Gragas. Having the shield from Colossus is very nice since you can benefit from it in 2 different ways. (gragase.pnggragasr.png).

You can also change it up a bit and if you are really confident in your ADC you can take Stoneborn pact in the resolve tree as well to help them have better sustain in teamfights. You can make that work with literally all of your spells but gragasw.png.

And if you feel like you wanna snowball fast and be even more agressive than normally. Go for the 0/18/12 mastery page setup. Taking thunderlords can sometimes payoff for Gragas. His early game damage is quite high for a tankier jungler and he can proc it very easily with his full combo.

My favorite way to skill up and start the game with Gragas but can be altered by going for your gragasq.png at level 1 instead and starting raptors for a quick clear and level 2 instantaneously. You always want to max out your gragasq.pngfirst and then gragase.png second to get a faster cooldown on your main CC ability. More body slams mean more lock down which is always appreciated.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Always start these on Gragas. Talisman with all of your AoE spells help your clear really fast and allow you to remain the most healthy with this setup instead.

Core Items

I tend to get Runic echoes on Gragas almost every game. Runic echoes synergizes really well with Gragas' kit and is more suited for aggressive players. If you want to be more frontline mode then go for Cinderhulk instead. As far as smites go, its all preference but I am a big fan of skirmishers sabre for the better dueling and dmg reduction.
Knight's vow in the current meta is just so good, it gives HP, CDR, and armor. Best part of all is that it can help keep whoever you link it too alive and since Gragas has passive healing he can make up for all the extra dmg he will be taking.
With his passive healing, Spirit visage is a godlike item that gives him the perfect tank stats needed for AP threats. My go to Magic resist item.

Situational Items

If really ahead and want some extra burst you can pickup this for its armor, cdr and free sheen proc. Works really well on his kit.
Either of these boots is fine for the obvious reasons. However you should turn in your mobi boots for one of the other 2 later in the game after lane phase is over and done.
All of these armor items are really good on Gragas but they all have their own time to shine. Thornmail for Auto attack heavy comps, same with frozen heart. Randuins omen if you need to survive against crit heavy comps, or if the enemy adc is very fed. If you need a little boost to get to the backline or a stronger engage in general you can pickup a righteous glory. And last but not least, Deadmans plate. The item has received some nerfs in the past but is still viable especially on Gragas. Paired up with an Iceborn gauntlet, this item will provide a lot of burst with your W. Think of this armor item as a more offensive one.
Abyssal mask is very good if you have an AP heavy team comp that would benefit from the Aura it grants. Locket is great for its high magic resist and sweet shield it can provide for your whole team. Gargoyle stoneplate is more appropriate for times when you need to dive the enemy backline and be a sponge for your team. And adaptive helm is a very rare item to pickup. I tend to only grab this when against Taliyah, Cassiopeia or Azir. People who tend to have a very spammable AP ability.

VS

Amumu

Easy

You can invade him early on if you get a good clear since Amumu clears arent the best. He will be atleast half hp or lower when clearing his jg so you can abuse this. He scales a lot better than you do later in the game due to his curseofthesadmummy.png. So try to abuse your lead over him early on and make more aggressive plays.

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

Its pretty difficult to take him on 1v1 due to his silence from feralscream.png and beautiful percent health damage from his vorpalspikes.png. He has infinite scaling in tankiness so the longer the game gets the worse this matchup gets aswell. Cho tends to farm up pre 6 so try to abuse the fact that you can be more aggressive than him in the early game and try to get your team rolling before he can start stacking his feast.png

VS

Elise

Medium

Elise is a pretty 50-50 matchup. She has the best pre 6 ganks in the game so try to counter gank her instead of initiating one first. As far as 1v1 potential, she will destroy you if she lands a elisehumane.png if not, then you can kill her pretty easily. The percent dmg from her elisehumanq.png is really strong too so I would recommend just farming up and scaling better than her since she falls off pretty hard in the later stages of the game when teamfights break out.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

Another easy matchup, You can counter gank him very easily and farm faster than he does. You also out duel him in a 1v1 with your amounts of CC and the fact that jarvan is a pretty squishy champion in the early game does not help him either. He tends to go for a quick level 3 and looks to gank already so you can either plan out a counter gank based off of that or steal his raptors/krugs since he most of the time will skip these.

VS

Kayn

Medium

Kayn has one of the fastest jungle clears currently in the game so expect him to counter jungle you a lot with the help from his kayne.png and insane mobility. Try to keep vision on your krugs as much as possible since that is a prime target for his counter jungling since you dont want to get those on your first clear anyway. Try setting up picks around your jungle and anywhere you have vision with your team to catch him out in awkward spots. You have a lot of CC to deal with him in the early game but in the late game he tends to just nuke ADCs so try to peel as much as possible with your CC. If possible setting up counterganks is very nice for you here since he is very squishy in the early game and without a form he does not do well in counterganks and 2v2s.

VS

Lee Sin

Easy

Probably one of Gragas' easier matchups is Lee Sin. You can cancel his blindmonkqone.png second hit with your gragase.png if timed correctly and makes him lose out on a lot of damage. You scale a lot better than he does so farming up is a good way to get ahead of Lee Sin. You have stronger counter ganks so if you catch him in a 2v2, most likely your team will pull ahead over him. Lee clears his jg pretty quickly so expect him to get to a lane before you do so make sure you have a clear plan on how you want to play against that.

VS

Maokai

Hard

Maokai is a tough matchup for you, He clears his jungle insanely fast and stays very healthy in the jungle. Invading is not an option here. So try to clear your camps as fast as possible on your first clear and then try to ward him out and setup vision for your team. He has a really strong gank as well with his maokaiw.png and slow from maokaiq.png. And if hes level 6 already then his maokair.png is probably one of the strongest teamfighting ultimates in the whole game and can change the outcome of a gank really easily into his favor. As far as tankiness goes, he also outscales you very hard so in later game teamfights, it will be a lot harder to win fights against him.

VS

Sejuani

Medium

Sej is a much better teamfighter than you are so I highly recommend abusing her weak early game and get a few ganks in to snowball. You can try to invade her early on in the game but she has a very healthy clear with her kit so it will not be common for her to be low in her jungle. If you get your team ahead in the early game she should not be a problem. On the other hand if you do not get any sort of an advantage in the early game you will have a pretty rough time 30-40 minutes in.
