Summoner Spells Back to Top

Flash and Smite are your only real options, you need smite for jungling and flash is the best mobility summoner option for graves.

Masteries Back to Top

Strength of the Ages is definitely the safest option you can take, most of the options in the resolve tree are standard; the only main choice is Explorer vs Tough Skin however i feel that since you can kite camps effectively the extra mobility ends up being more useful than the reduced damage (true grit helps to mitigate most of the damage you take throughout the game anyway).

The only alternative to this Mastery setup is to take Thunderlords instead of going 18 points in Resolve for Strength of the Ages (SotA), this should only be done when you feel you are able to invade and countergank aggressively because if you fall behind with that mastery you will struggle because you lack the free 300 HP that SotA offers you.

You definitely want to max your Q as soon as possible since it is your main damaging spell and has massive base damage. Next up is your E, this skill is massively strong due to the true grit and reload component it allows you to be an amazing skirmisher and is your main skill for re-positioning and getting more damage out of your kit by reloading after your first shot.

Of course you want to max your ultimate ASAP, but keep in mind that it will send you backwards when you cast it so make sure you have thrown out as much damage as possible before using it to finish off your opponents if you are looking to burst enemies.

Your W is definitely the weakest in damage and is not a very strong slow but the utility it offers is amazing at rank 1 so you should leave it at rank 1 to focus on your other more important abilities.

Situational Items

    Aggressive/Snowballing items
    Against heavy armor
    Safer aggressive items

As with most other junglers in the current meta the starting items are quite standard and the only deviation is to buy 3 health potions instead of refillable.

On your first back you should look to possibly grab a hunter's potion and start work on your jungle item; or if you have a strong start you can grab some longswords (building towards caulfields) for some increased clear speed (note that you dont always have to grab hunters potion).

After you complete your Warrior enchanted jungle item you should look to start building towards the situational items like hexdrinker and your selection of boots as well as upgrading to the oracle alteration trinket once you hit level 9.

I generally prefer to grab Berserkers Greaves + Red Smite whenever possible, the only time i dont is when tabi/merc treads are needed to mitigate multiple auto attackers or a team with lots of potent crowd control.

Later into the game you should usually have upgraded boots, phantom dancer, warrior enchanted jungle item, maw of malmortius and at this point you should pick up either a Bloodthirster/Mercurial scimitar or a Mortal Reminder/Lord Dominik's based on how many tanks the enemies have (or how ahead you are).

VS

Elise

Hard

Elise is an absolute monster at level 3, unless you can countergank her effectively she will put way more pressure on your lanes than what you can offer as graves

VS

Gragas

Medium

Gragas has a ton of CC and burst while Graves only really offers burst, unless you can get an early kill and pressure him in his jungle his ganks will be much more effective than yours

VS

Hecarim

Medium

Hecarim is very similar to Graves in that they both struggle to have early impact and require 1-1.5 completed items (or level 6 in the case of Hecarim) before really starting to show strength.

VS

Kindred

Easy

With all the nerfs kindred has received over that past few patches Graves easily out pressures her early game, her build path also leaves her very vulnerable to AD damage dealers.

VS

Nidalee

Hard

Nidalee has a lot of early pressure on the map so she can be tricky to deal with until you get a few items under your belt (like hexdrinker)

VS

Rek'Sai

Hard

Rek'Sai is a very fast and safe early jungler so she can outshine Graves early, however if Graves is able to get any sort of advantage Rek'Sai will have a hard time scaling into the later phases of the game and will get easily eclipsed by Graves

Early Game / First Clear Back to Top

In the early game you should look to safely clear and use your trinket to ward lanes to keep them alive as you abuse Graves' strong and safe early clearing before looking to invade/countergank lanes since ganking is usually out of the question.

Most meta junglers will out pressure you early so you should be looking to accelerate your farming while taking away enemy camps when possible so that you can scale up more quickly while denying farm from the enemy as they will likely gank your laners. You should still look to gank whenever possible but rarely will you ever get kills with pre-level 6 ganks so be content with burning enemy summoner spells when you do.

Mid Game Back to Top

In the mid game you will start to scale up to bbe enough of a threat to compete with the other jungler and look to fight over objectives as well as you your quick minion pushing to help laners look for towers (if a turret hasnt fallen yet always look for chances to take the first tower kill gold since it is quite a bit of free gold and can help your laners immensely especially if they take all the local gold from it).

As teamfights start to happen around objectives look to follow up any picks your team makes with your burst combo by auto attack cancelling with E while using Q and R when you can (looking to use Q against terrain and using R when you cant do any more damage with auto attacks), this should be enough to get you a kill in most cases so you can look to finish the objective safely.

Mid game with a few items is where graves starts to become very strong so make sure to abuse your strong burst and skirmishing to your advantage. Keep in mind that if you start to snowball you should grab items that help you to snowball such as Ghostblade in order to really take control of the game.

Late Game Back to Top

Later in the game Graves falls off a tiny bit but is still much stronger than most other junglers however he doesnt have the ability to force fights easily like Hecarim or Gragas might so you need to move with your team for the most part at this point and use them to help you set up picks and fights since you should have a ton of damage at this point (especially if you happened to itemize aggressively).

You can also clear side lanes pretty comfortable if you have grabbed any lifesteal items since graves is a very potent duelist but make sure you are very careful with your split pushing, although you may kill turrets quite quickly you are also quite vulnerable if multiple people gank you.

Ultimately as with most junglers in the late game, just look to stay alive so that you can always contest epic monsters and objectives with your team and as graves specifically always make sure to do as much damage as possible without dying.
