Summoner Spells Back to Top

12.png Teleport is mandatory. It lets you make big plays (since Hecarim's TP ganks are really good post-level 6) and get back to lane if you mess up.

14.png Ignite gives you lots of kill pressure in lane, and helps you turn a lot of even matchups into favorable ones. It also pretty much guarantees that whoever you dive in teamfights will die. As of now, I always take this. 


I personally take 12.png14.png every game. 



6.png I don't like taking Ghost because I believe it sacrifices too much kill pressure from not having 14.png. It is viable though if you really like it, especially since it's on a lower cooldown now. 


4.png It doesn't offer enough since 120.png can escape ganks through proper vision and using hecarimramp.png to run away fast, and in emergency situations hecarimult.png to dash away post-6.

18/0/12 is my mastery page for 120.png. I use this for every matchup.


Sorcery: since the 3078.png rework, you get attack speed later anyways, so the extra ability damage is nice.
Double Edged Sword: It helps you win trades/all-ins in lane and delete carries in teamfights.
Vampirism: It helps you stay topped off in health during the laning phase. I think Natural Talent just gives you too few stats to matter in comparison.
Bounty Hunter: 120.png has a lot of kill potential, and generally will rack up lots of kills, so it is worth it to take this over Oppressor.
Battering Blows: 120.png is AD.
Fervor of Battle: Better than alternatives, and 120.png stacks it really fast with hecarimrapidslash.png + autos.

Recovery: I don't build much resists for a while, so the health regen helps me in the early-mid game.
Tough Skin: It helps you win a lot of trades, and Explorer is too conditional.
Veteran's Scars: I take this over Runic Armor since the extra health can win you a lot of early all-ins. Runic Armor definitely is viable if you feel that you don't get into many early game fights.
Insight: lower summoner spell cooldown = more ignite and teleport= more kills and roams. This is way better than Perseverance.

hecarimult.png is your ultimate so put a point in it whenever you can.

hecarimrapidslash.png is your main damage ability.

Take a point in hecarimw.png at level 2. It is better than hecarimramp.png that early on, and most people don't factor in the heal from when fighting you. 120.png can beat almost every top lane champion at level 2 in an all-in with hecarimrapidslash.pnghecarimw.png + 14.png, assuming both champions are relatively healthy at the start of the fight.

Afterwards, max hecarimramp.png second and leave only one point in hecarimw.png.

Situational Items

Always start 2033.png. It offers so much health, mana, and damage.


Next rush the appropriate boots. 3047.png against AD and 3111.png against AP.

Then rush 3078.png followed by 3142.png. Triforce is core. Always build it after tier 2 boots. Then build ghostblade (3134.png first, then 3133.png) and 3067.png as this will give you 40% CDR. I really like building 3142.png now. It'll mean whoever you dive in teamfights is pretty much guaranteed dead, and the extra AD along with the attack speed from 3078.png helps you take towers fasat and win a lot of duels. It's true that you are squishier, so you have to pick when you go in carefully. Don't play like 120.png is a tank.

Afterwards, it depends on the enemy team. If most of their damage comes from AP, finish your 3065.png . If their biggest threats are AD, build 3143.png. Alternatively, if their team has little to no crit damage (which is very rare), you can swap out 3143.png for 3742.png. Then build 3053.png as your final item. Some people prefer 3026.png last, but I think 3053.png gives you more tankiness because if its shield, and the added damage is great for your triforce procs. 

If you finish your items, get 2138.png whenever you can.

Tank akali is pretty easy. It'll be difficult for you to kill her, but its really hard for her to kill you too. Make sure you land some harass with hecarimrapidslash.png before you all-in for the kill. Also, always get a 2043.png after your first back in case you get in a fight.

Aurelion Sol

Easy

Once you hit level 4, you can all-in him really easily. Just get 2 hecarimrapidslash.png stacks and hecarimramp.png toward him. His aurelionsolW.png won't damage you at close range.

Cassiopeia

Hard

Super annoying. If she lands cassiopeianoxiousblast.png on you, she'll fire a barrage of cassiopeiatwinfang.png and you'll pretty much lose half your health. Also, if 69.png gets to level 2 first (which she probably will since she can zone you at level 1), you have to be really careful since you don't have an escape. After level 4, call for jungler assistance to kill her. Then, your laning phase will be much smoother. Still, rely more on roaming than killing 69.png.

Cho'Gath

Easy

You can all-in him at level 3. Just don't take too much harass beforehand. Just don't go for too many short trades though, as 31.png will just sustain it all back up wit his passive.

Darius

Hard

Disgustingly hard. 122.png out-duels you at every level with his stupid passive. Cry and ask for your jungler to help you kill him with 14.png after level 4. Then shove the lane and try to roam.

Diana

Easy

She can never outduel you without jungler assistance. Just ward up and it's an easy lane.

Dr. Mundo

Medium

If you don't kill him early, it'll be really hard to kill him. Harass him with hecarimrapidslash.png starting level 1, but avoid his infectedcleavermissilecast.png as it'll do more damage. If you're at an HP advantage at level 4, you can kill him with 14.png. After level 6, just harass him and only all-in him if you have your 14.png up or he'll just heal all your damage up with sadism.png.

Ekko

Medium

You can harass him with hecarimrapidslash.png, but don't get into an all in at level 1. You can probably kill him at level 2 and level 4, not level 3 though. If you don't get a kill early, don't try to fight him too much post level 6. His ekkoR.png makes fighting him really annoying.

Fiora

Easy

It's not really worth harassing 114.png at level 1. Starting at level 2, you can harass her with hecarimrapidslash.png, and then all-in her. Just be sure to watch out for your vitals though. At level 4 until she finishes 3074.png3071.png onwards, it's pretty easy to kill her though.

Easy

Pretty free lane. Top tank 105.png pretty much only damages and farms with his fizzseastonepassive.png autos, which means you can hecarimrapidslash.png harass him all day. So long as you harass him a bit in lane, I don't think there is any point where he can 1v1 you, except maybe super late game.

Easy

Let the wave shove to your tower until level 3-4. Afterwards, you can pretty much kill him whenever you can engage on him so long as you have 2 hecarimrapidslash.png stacks beforehand. Definitely watch out for his raisemorale.png in bushes, as it'll do a ton of damage, slow you, and you won't be able to get to him.

Garen

Medium

Very annoying matchup. Don't try to harass him with hecarimrapidslash.png early, since he'll just garenslash3.png you for more damage. You can try to fight him briefly if he wastes his garenslash3.png, but watch out for his cooldown, or it'll come back up and he'll do big damage to you. Ask for your jungler to get you ahead, then the lane will be easy.

Gnar

Medium

This isn't as bad of a matchup as you would think. Avoid his gnarQ.png, and try to harass him with hecarimrapidslash.png when he goes for cs in mini-gnar form. Don't fight him in mega-gnar form since he's too tanky. If he ever burns his gnarE.png, you can hecarimramp.png onto him and out-trade him pretty hard. Until he builds 3022.png, its a pretty easy matchup, but that won't be until pretty late.

Easy

Avoid his gragasbarrelroll.png harass between levels 1-3, then you can fight him. If you make it through the early levels with decent health, it'll be an easy matchup.

Graves

Medium

He's not really played top lane anymore, but its a very annoying matchup. A good 104.png is really hard to get a kill on. Try to avoid harass until level 4, then you can try to go for a few exchanges with hecarimramp.png when he starts reloading. Overall, rely on jungler help. If you get a kill, the lane will be MUCH MUCH easier.

Heimerdinger

Easy

Actually not too bad. After level 4, its pretty easy to kill him with 2 hecarimrapidslash.png stacks. Just hecarimramp.png him away from the majority of his placed h28gevolutionturret.pngs. Be careful fighting him when he has upgrade!!!.png up though. If you can get a kill before that, the lane will be very easy.

Illaoi

Easy

This matchup is really easy so long as you dodge illaoiE.png. Even if you get hit by a few illaoiQ.png, its still alright. You can fight her starting level 2. Once you hit 6, try to bait out her illaoiR.png by going for an extended trade, then getting out of her illaoiR.png zone with hecarimramp.png. NEVER fight her in her illaoiR.png. She can 1v1 you for sure, maybe even 1v2 you and your jungler. After she wastes her ult, use 2033.png to heal up a bit, then kill her with 2 hecarimrapidslash.png stacks and 14.png.

Irelia

Medium

It's a skill matchup, but heavily in your favor. Go for hecarimrapidslash.png harass starting at level 1, and at level 2, you can pretty easily get a kill on her with 14.png. However, if you don't get a kill on her by level 6, don't try to all-in her unless you get a lot of good hecarimrapidslash.png harass on her or your jungler helps.


Some people build 3111.png because of her stun, but 3047.png is better.

Jarvan IV

Easy

If he ever misses jarvanivdragonstrike.png, you can get a lot of good damage on him. Once he misses jarvanivdragonstrike.png, you can fight him at every level. It's also on a decent cooldown, so you have a pretty big window of opportunity.

Same as 39.png, just read those notes.

Hard

Really annoying poke, and he can jayceE.png you back whenever you hecarimramp.png in. Just try to dodge his empowered Q shot, and ask your jungler for help. At level 6, you can engage onto him with hecarimult.png into hecarimramp.png, but even then it'll be a close fight.

Hard

You can never fight her because of her karmaspiritbond.png and karmasoulshield.png, and she'll poke you like crazy with karmaheavenlywave.png. Dodge her karmaheavenlywave.png and ask your jungler for help.

Kayle

Hard

After level 4, it's actually not too hard to kill her with 2 hecarimrapidslash.png stacks and hecarimramp.png all-in. However, she'll eventually be able to duel you, and she can just kayleR.png whoever you hecarimramp.png onto. Really annoying in every stage of the game.

Kennen

Medium

Play safe until level 3. Afterwards, you can fight him whenever he uses his kennenbringthelight.png empowered auto-attack or his kennenshurikenhurlmissile1.png. His burst at level 6 with kennenshurikenstorm.png is scary, but you can survive and beat him since you'll probably have 3111.png at that point.

Lissandra

Medium

Don't try to fight her unless she does not utilize her range advantage at all, or she burns her lissandraE.png. Once you get some CDR through 3057.png and 3101.png from building 3078.png, your hecarimramp.png will be on a shorter cooldown than her lissandraE.png, so keep that in mind. She can harass you, but her all-in isn't that strong. 127.png can set up ganks very well though.

Lulu

Hard
117.png can just kite you forever and turn you into a squirrel. Watch out for her luluq.png and ask for jungler help.

Malphite

Easy

You should play really aggressive so that Malphite uses up all his mana with his high mana-costs. After level 2, you can kill him with 14.png. Harassing him with hecarimrapidslash.png is very important so that he doesn't get his passive shield up.

Maokai

Medium

He can outtrade you until you back and get 3111.png and some 3078.png components. Still, whenever he burns his maokaitrunkline.png or maokaisapling2.png pushing the wave, you can walk forward and harass him. If he engages on you while you have 2 stacks of hecarimrapidslash.png, you can fight him. Otherwise, trading isn't worth it since 57.png's passive heals him. I would build 3211.png after 3078.png if the jungler and mid are also AP. Since you have 14.png, its pretty hard for 57.png to beat you 1v1. Watch out for the enemy jungler though. 57.png has great gank setup.

Nasus

Hard

This lane is really annoying. It isn't that the lane is hard, its just that 75.png's 1v1 power is very strong in the mid-late game, and his wither.png really screws you over. Try to freeze the lane early, but once you hit level 6, its very important that you roam and get the rest of your team ahead, as that is the way to beat 75.png

Nautilus

Easy

Use your hecarimrapidslash.png to harass him, and try to wait out his nautiluspiercinggaze.png, as those autos will hurt you. Also, keep in mind that 111.png's passive will root you every once in a while. Overall, its not a difficult lane. It's like playing against Maokai, but easier.

Olaf

Medium

Don't get into a fight with him at level 1. If you see him miss his olafaxethrowcast.png, try to get some hecarimrapidslash.png harass. At level 2, you can kill him with 2 hecarimrapidslash.png stacks, hecarimw.png, and 14.png. After level 2, wait until you back, get 3047.png, and your 14.png is up to fight him.

Pantheon

Hard

Really annoying. 80.png is one of the biggest bullies in top lane. Play safe, and rush 3047.png and 3082.png next just to have a bit of extra armor. Then, you can go back to building 3078.png. If you get an early kill on Pantheon (through a jungle gank or something) you can ignore the 3082.png. Once you hit 6, this matchup becomes significantly easier. You can try to fight him, especially if 80.png took 12.png

Poppy

Easy

Don't stand close to walls, try to step on her passive buckler when it drops to the ground, and walk away from the second part of her poppydevastatingblow.png. I don't feel like 78.png is very strong, and I think 120.png can take her at every stage of the game (except maybe super late).

Quinn

Medium

Not as hard as you would think. Play passive and let the lane push to you until you get 3047.png. The key to fighting 133.png is to use your hecarimramp.png to run past her and knock her towards your tower so that she can't just disengage. When you reach level 6, you have kill potential on her so long as you don't miss hecarimult.png.

VS

Renekton

Medium

A big lane bully. Play safe and get 3047.png, then the lane becomes a bit more comfortable for you. Still, you can't really kill 58.png unless he messes up badly. Even if your jungler ganks early and you get a kill, 58.png still has pressure on you. Wait until level 6 and try to hecarimult.pnghecarimramp.png him into your tower when he pushes. Otherwise, don't try to fight him. So long as you play safe, he shouldn't be able to do too much to you. Watch out for dives though.

Rengar

Medium

If he has 14.png, let the lane push to your tower at level 1. He's stronger at level 1, his level 2 powerspike is scary, and the fact that you don't have 4.png makes the lane dangerous until you get some levels. Don't be hesitant to back early and 12.pngto lane after getting some early armor. Spam missing ping when 107.png is out of lane after he hits level 6, and abuse your TP advantage whenever you can. 


If he has 12.png, let the lane push to your tower at level 1. Farm passively, and get some levels. After level 4, you should be pretty safe considering he doesn't have 14.png and you do. 

Junglers love to snowball 107.png though, so keep your wards up.

Riven

Medium

A very fun lane in my opinion. Whoever gets ahead dominates the lane. Don't try to harass her at level 1. You can win an all-in at level 2 with 2 hecarimrapidslash.png stacks and hecarimw.png, but 92.png can just disengage with riventricleave.png hops. After level 4, you can win pretty much any all-in so long as you have 2 hecarimrapidslash.png stacks.

Rumble

Medium

Pretty even matchup. Don't try to all-in him without having 3111.png and some 3078.png components. 68.png has pretty cheap powerspikes early, so fighting early isn't a good idea. watch out for his rumblecarpetbomb.png, as it does a LOT of damage.

Ryze

Hard

When his passive is up, 13.png can blow you up. A good 13.png is terrifying. Watch out for his passive stacks. Only ever try to fight him when it goes down or if your jungler is ganking. 13.png is scary even if you get an early kill, so rely on shoving the lane and roaming.

Shen

Easy
98.png can't really do much to you. When he activates shenfeint.png, walk away from his while using hecarimrapidslash.png so that he can't get his shenvorpalstar.png autos on you. You can disrupt his shenstandunited.png with your hecarimramp.png or hecarimult.png. His only way of farming and damaging you is through his autos, so 98.png is pretty easy for you to bully. Just try not to let his spooky sword go through you.

Singed

Medium

You can fight him at levels 2-5. Once 27.png hits level 6, its super hard to kill him, even with 14.png, so don't try unless he takes a ton of hecarimrapidslash.png harass. Don't underestimate the extra AP 27.png gets from insanitypotion.png, or you'll die.

Sion

Easy

You can harass him with hecarimrapidslash.png starting at level 1. Run around 14.png to dodge his crypticgaze.png. Especially after level 4, you have pretty good pressure on him so long as you don't take too much poke from enrage.png. Keep in mind that after level 6, you can hecarimult.png forward and block his cannibalism.png if you tries to use that to run away.

Swain

Medium

You have to get a kill early to win this lane. Once you hit level 3, try to get 2 hecarimrapidslash.png stacks and run past 50.png with hecarimramp.png and knock him backwards toward your tower. He's pretty weak early so you should be able to kill him, especially with 14.png. Don't try to solo-kill him later on in the game as he'll be too tanky. and 50.png's heal is absurd. Try your best to gank other lanes as 50.png's 12.png ganks are pretty sub-par.

Tahm Kench

Hard

I've never played against one, so I can't say. I feel like it'd be super hard though, since 120.png relies on extended trades, and those work in favor of 223.png with his tahmkenchW.png and repeated tahmkenchQ.pngs.

Teemo

Easy

Farm passively until level 4, and wait for him to burn his blindingdart.png while maintaining at least one stack of hecarimrapidslash.png. Once 17.png uses blindingdart.png, run at him with hecarimramp.png, knock him backwards, and out-trade him like crazy. After level 6, watch out for his bantamtrap.png placement. A good 17.png will litter them in the lane and use those to kite you. 


This matchup is much scarier if he takes 14.png. If that's the case, use your 12.png to get back to lane after getting 3111.png, or ganking other lanes.

Trundle

Hard
48.png can out-trade you all the time with trundleQ.png since it steals your AD. the only time you could possible fight 48.png is if he wastes his trundleW.png. Even then, extended trades are not in your favor. In teamfights, he can make you really squishy with trundleR.png and really mess you up with trundleE.pngAsk for jungler help.

Tryndamere

Medium

Watch out for his rage bar because he might crit you like crazy. You can harass with hecarimrapidslash.png starting at level 2, and its pretty easy for you to get an early kill because of how squishy 23.png is. Once 23.png hits level 6, you have to be really careful about fighting him, since his undyingrage.png can completely turn the fight. Make proper use of your 14.png and try to kite him when he is in his undyingrage.png. However, if you get killed early, the lane becomes really hard. If that's the case, you'll have to rely on jungler help and getting other lanes ahead.

Vladimir

Medium

Try not to take too much harass until level 4, especially 8.png's empowered vladimirtransfusion.png. Once you hit level 4, get at least one hecarimrapidslash.png stack and run at him with hecarimramp.png. You have to just all-in 8.png in lane whenever you can, or he'll heal up all your damage with vladimirtransfusion.png.

Wukong

Easy

Harass 62.png starting at level 1 with hecarimrapidslash.png. Stay close to your minions early, since if he monkeykingnimbus.pngs onto you, he'll take a lot of minion aggro. At level 2, be careful until level 3. Then, if he monkeykingnimbus.pngs onto you and tries to disengage with monkeykingdecoy.png, just hecarimramp.png forward until 62.png gets out of stealth and punish him. You win most fights with 14.png. He's squishy enough for you to bully, and it's difficult for him to get away from your hecarimramp.png, so the lane isn't very hard.

Yasuo

Medium
157.png can bully you early on. Wait until level 3-4 before fighting him. I would build 3047.png3078.png, and then 3143.png if you're having trouble. If you get an early kill, stick with 3142.png to snowball hard since 157.png is really squishy.

Zac

Medium

I don't have much experience with this matchup, but from what I know, it's hard for you and 154.png to kill each other. Stepping on 154.png's blobs is a really important part of this matchup. Early on, he can do pretty good damage to you, but he's not very scary later on. 154.png has really good gank setup with zacE.png though, so watch out. You can try to all-in him around levels 3-4, but if you don't get a solo-kill then, you probably won't.

Important Notes Back to Top

120.png has very good damage early and mid game, but falls off late game. Try to win lane in the early game and make plays in the mid game. Don't let the game drag on for too long, as the game will get harder and harder. 


A very forgotten part of 120.png's kit is the stack mechanic on hecarimrapidslash.png. When you have 2 stacks, hecarimrapidslash.png is on a noticeably shorter cooldown and can make or break an all-in.


At levels 2-6, hecarimw.png is a crucial part to fighting, as your opponent will almost always underestimate the heal you get from it. Use that to your advantage.


The optimal way to use hecarimramp.png is to get 1 or 2 stacks of hecarimrapidslash.png, wait for hecarimrapidslash.png to come off cooldown, pop hecarimramp.png and run toward your opponent, hecarimrapidslash.png him WITHOUT auto-attacking (as that will use your hecarimramp.png), and run past him to knock him backwards and deal more damage. Try to do this whenever you can. 

However, there are times when its better to just hecarimramp.png your opponent as soon as you can (for more instant damage or if it is about to time out). Knowing when or when not to do this comes with experience.

I'm koigoi, a top lane main. I mained 75.png for most of my time on league, and used him to climb to plat. However, he became less viable in higher elos (since people know to kite) and I got really bored of him. In mid to late season 5, I picked up 120.png to get from plat to diamond, and I found him to be really fun. In season 6, I haven't played much 120.png (the tanks were really strong, and I was playing 114.png who was pretty much freelo), but I play him a lot in norms, and the pony is still one of my favorite champs.


I noticed that there wasn't really an extensive tanky hecarim top guide online, so I decided to write one.
