Summoner Spells Back to Top

Choosing summoners that work well with Irelia are key to winning a game. I highly recommend teleport because it gives you great map control and opportunities to get objectives. Carrying teleport will help keep you aware about what's happening around the map and can turn around bad situations. All in all a great pick if you want to help win multiple lanes.

Flash is a standard pick for her because it helps her close gaps to allow for Q dash and autos. Great for escaping ganks and blowing the minds of your opponents too.

Finally ignite is a good choice if you are ever facing champs such as Dr. Mundo or Garen because it reduces healing effects such as Mundo's ult and Garen's passive, allowing you to finish these champs and dominate in lane. You can also carry ignite if you are more focused on winning your lane and shutting them down extremely hard.

Masteries Back to Top

With the new masteries I like to run 18/0/12:

1) Ferocity Tree (18)

Fury (Attack speed is always good on Irelia so the obvious choice since items will get you the cool down reduction you need), Double Edged Sword (A bonus of 3% damage while only taking an extra 1.5% means you will have even better trade potential), Vampirism (I prefer the 2% life steal / spell vamp over extra damage per level since it will help with early sustain), Oppressor (Dealing an extra 2.5% damage on targets that are impaired {your e counts as impaired} means you'll get your full to dead combos even easier), Battering Blows (Armor penetration over magic penetration since you are an attack damage bruiser / assassin), and Fervor of Battle for you special ability (Since you'll be auto attacking all the time, it is obvious that this is the one you would choose to win trades against opponents)

2) Resolve Tree (12)

Unyielding (6% bonus armor and magic resist makes you tankier especially with the runes that you run and item builds you go allowing you to build extra damage if you like), Explorer (I prefer this because I like to roam and this helps if you go down river or back up to lane through river and bushes. You can go Tough Skin to take off 2 damage per basic attack if you feel better about that), Runic Armor (8% bonus to shields, healing, {includes life steal and regeneration} which just makes you altogether better at sustaining in a fight), and Insight (lowers the cool down on summoner spells {flash, tp, etc.} which allows you to be more active in helping out your allies and play safe or aggressive in lane)

Starting off with your E is typically the best start. It is a low cool down crowd control ability that can guarantee a first blood in a level 1 invade.  Also if the jungler decides to pay you an early visit you can always slow/stun him to keep him away. Level 2 you take your Q to help farm under turret since killing a target refreshes the cool down and refunds mana. Finally you get your W at 3 for passive sustain and true damage when activated for you basic attacks.

Maxing your W first is your best option because it increases the amount of HP healed per level and lengthens the activated time for the ability giving you more opportunities to provide damage.

Second you max your E to be more mana efficient particularly since you want the mana refund on your Q to be more than half the cost. This way by late game you already have built up large amounts of mana allowing you to spam your abilities as you please.

Finally maxing Q will lower cool down but by this point you should have close to full cool down reduction, making your Q even more accessible than before.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    1) Best Start: This potion is similar to flask from Season 5. It heals for slightly less but popping one charge gives burn damage over time from your autos which makes you a trading machine. Makes her early game much stronger and allows you to bully your counters out of lane.
    2) Viable when necessary to sustain
    3) Also viable for early damage but was more of a thing last season before the new corruption potion came out. Doran's is better and the potion is by far the best.

Core Items

    1) Honestly this is my favorite first item. Sheen just gives you more early burst to win trades and shove your opponent out of lane. It also makes farming with your Bladesurge (Q) easier. Picking this over pickaxe is a much better early buy particularly since they dropped the cost by 150 gold ___________________________________ PS) You will need to build boots at some point so just find time since they cost 300 gold. I tend to always go mercury treads for the tenacity once I upgrade them.
    2) Basically best item to build on Irelia right now. You can outrade anyone with it.
    3) Next go into trinity force because it's always been one of the best items on Irelia because she uses all aspects on her.
    4) Deadman's plate is great because it makes you tankier, increases your mobility around the map, and your first auto gains extra damage giving you that much more of an edge.
Build should look like this typically.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

Can go either way. Whoever can get the early advantage will be able to snowball the lane. One way to push the advantage in your favor is to use your Q to dodge his knock up. When he goes to knock you up, jump to a low-health minion nearby to refresh your Q and avoid the cc. If you can't do that any minion will work as well, it will just be on cool down then. And when dodging his Q, don't be afraid to go behind him towards his turret. Dodging his cc gives you a huge advantage so do it in any way possible.

VS

Akali

Easy

Akali isn't much of a threat until she hits level 6. Without her ult she has no way to close gaps or escape from you except her shroud, so take advantage of that.

VS

Annie

Easy

Early game is typical, play smart and let her push. Look for opportunities if she goes  uses all her mana and be ready for your level 6 damage spike as well as hers. Be ready to Q towards her or a nearby minion when you're both 6+ so that if she attempts to ult you it fails causing a loss in stun, burst damage, and giving you the element of surprise. Then it's free auto attacking until you have taken her out.

VS

Darius

Hard

In a one on one lane he wins. You definitely need early jungler support unless you can get him to tower dive you, in which case you use the turret to your advantage. Let him shove lane, and just make sure to stay for the experience grabbing gold when it's safe. Never let him get a hold of you and save that Q for farming under turret early. If you can bait him under your tower and land a good stun early, that will help lead to a snowball in your favor.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Always take ignite. Makes his ultimate useless and you should dominate top easily. Establish lane dominance using your E to stun/slow followed by one or two auto attacks. Try to dodge his cleavers until later when you can take the damage easily and deny him cs. If you can whittle him down enough pre 6, go for the kill then. Otherwise you can still finish him at 6 as long as you still have the ignite to lower the health regen from his ult.

VS

Fiora

Hard

It is winnable but it's nice to get some early jungler support to keep her at bay and try to snowball the lane.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Slightly annoying since he has the ranged ability that slows but you win close up and personal particularly using Tri Force.

VS

Garen

Easy

Garen is just an annoying lane. He's going to get really tanky, can stay in lane as long as he wants with increased regen, and can silence you with speed. Your goal in the early laning phase is to try to keep him away from minions so he can't build his tanky items and look for opportunities to finish him and shove him out of lane. I still say it's an easy lane because you outdamage him at all times, he just can stay in lane longer earlier. Try to auto attack him every once in a while if you aren't trading with him to prevent his passive from refreshing.

VS

Gnar

Medium

In his small form he can't stop you. Once transformed he can take you on unless you have snowballed lane...then he better start running a way.

VS

Jayce

Easy

He may have burst damage, however you have sustain and can win with sheen and phage alone. As long as you don't go too balls deep it should be a simple matchup, just slightly annoying.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Early game he will harass you with his basic attacks and his shuriken. Just play safe and farm under turret until 6-7 and try to get that Tri Force as fast as you can. Once you have it you can easily take on this yordle. (Make sure to save your E for after he's used his speed boost. Otherwise he will just escape).

Tips For Ability Usage Back to Top

(1) One of the best ways to close the gap between you and an opponent while still maxing out on your damage, is by bladesurging (Q) to a low-health minion killing it then stunning/slowing your opponent that you just arrived next to. This combo allows you to save your Q for the chase and apply even more damage when necessary.

(2) Q is an on-hit proc of the sheen/tri force passive which will make Q farming easier and help you burst down your opponent.

(3) Each tick of your ult procs tri force so make sure to auto attack between usage of your R to get the most damage output you can. Don't be afraid to Equilibrium (E) your opponent to keep them in range. Hiten Style (W) also increases the lifesteal you get from your ult.

(4) You can use Bladesurge (Q) to dodge ablities by dashing to minions (and if you kill the minions you can continue this pattern to throw off your opponents). I have escaped many ganks by running in one direction only to turn around and escape by minion. Dodging cc and damage will make you the god of the top lane.

(5) Early on in lane focus cs and use that tower to your advantage. I get many kills because the opposing lane was cocky and figured they could tower dive you. Stunning them just as they damage you gives you the perfect combo to win the lane and snowball it on your own.

(6) The best way to fulfill the previous tip (and this is not BM in my opinion as long as you never type in all chat) is to CTRL+4 to bait your laner towards you into the tower. Do it in the middle of lane if you can't farm so that they will start to fume and eventually try to get you under tower as you farm. Countless times (particularly at lower elos) opponents will want to kill you really badly and make the mistake of coming at you under the protection of the turret. They do that and from then on the lane is yours.

Just a little about me Back to Top

Hi I'm Oill Mechanics. I started playing League of Legends my freshman year of college when my dormmates turned me on to the game. I started just as Season 2 was ending (watched the Taipei Assassins win the LCS). I still remember playing my first ranked games 6 months after I started only to place Bronze 3 (first year of the new ranking system). It's crazy to see just how much I've improved in two years of gameplay and where I might end up in the near future. If you have any suggestions to how I can make this guide better please leave your comments below. I look forward to hearing feedback (can't get better if you don't learn from your mistakes).
