Summoner Spells Back to Top

Teleport/Flash should always be run on Irelia, as she is a good tp team fighter as well as heavily dependent on cs. Teleport allows Irelia, who is weak early game, to not fall behind in lane and become less useful later.  Irelia is also a great splitpusher and teleport allows her to to do this while being able to provide presence in teamfights. However, if you are really confident in your kill potential and are planning on being super aggressive in lane, ignite is also an option.

Masteries Back to Top

I like to take 18 0 12 masteries on Irelia for my standard page.  For keystone you should go fervor of battle. Most of the time you should take fervor of battle because the attack damage stacks on your auto attacks, which you will be relying upon in trades and fights.

If you are against a matchup where you will not get very many autos off, (Riven, Jax), warlords isn't a bad choice either since it allows you to sustain against those champions.  Warlords is also not bad if you aren't confident in your irelia abilities.

Starting E level 1 is the best way to start in the top lane as most top laners such as Olaf, Darius, Fiora, Riven, Nautilus, etc. are tanks/bruisers that outdamage you level 1. With this you have decent harass by E AA then running away.  Starting with stun forces them to respect you in lane, which allows you to get some cs while minimizing the amount of damage you take should your opponent decide to jump on you. However, all ranged matchups (i.e. Teemo, Quinn) you must start q first or you will be deprived of all cs without losing half of your hp.  Level 2 you take q or e, whichever one you didn't take level 1 since w is pretty useless without your other 2 spells.  Level 3 onward you want to take W whenever you can since it is your damage spell, unless you are against a champion that you can oneshot, (i.e. teemo, riven) then maximizing e would also be an option in those matchups. Obviously, take R whenever possible.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

This is the standard start as the corrupting potion gives you sustain and more trading potential. Mana sustain is important in outlasting your opponent in lane, and corrupting potion gives you the best opportunity to do that, while also healing your hp. CP also has a slight damaging passive when used in combat, which encourages trading while being used.
This is the start I take against ad bullies like pantheon that I cannot trade with at all. It basically limits their kill potential on you, which is bad for them since champions like pantheon rely on early game lead.
This is the super aggressive start if you are not looking to sustain. Super risky but can work vs squishies.

Core Items

This is my core build on Irelia. Trinity force is a must start item unless you are insanely behind. I usually go mercurial tread's to limit the amount of cc i take, however, Ninja tabi's are also an option against an autoattack matchup (Olaf). If doing well, Ghostblade is a good second item as it gives Irelia CDR as well as a ton of AD. Torward's late game it's about survivability, so defense and guardian angel should be prioritized.
If you are insanely ahead early these will give you a lot of snowball potential.
These are also good if you're ahead as it makes you more mobile in catching out people.
Full Tank Irelia if you are primary tank
Rushing these in auto-attack lanes such as fiora, tryndamere, jax will make you unkillable in lane (Very effective against auto attack champs)
    If you are snowballing hard
1v9 build, can switch out Frozen heart for Spirit visage or Randuin's omen, depending on enemy team

Situational Items

Wit's end can be effective against ap top laners. Normally I still rush triforce, however, if you are taking a lot of damage, this is not a bad item.
Frozen Heart is also a popular item on Irelia. Get this vs. AA reliant champs like fiora or vayne, as Frozen Heart's passive reduces Attack Speed of nearby enemies by 15%. On top of all that, you get a 20% cdr, which is always helpful with irelia.
Thornmail can be good if you are the primary tank against a heavy AD team (Tryndamere, Jax) I would not buy this until 3rd or 4th item.
This is a good item on Irelia as it gives hp and ad, which is always a plus. Particularly useful if you're getting bursted down 100-0, (i.e. a fed syndra) since the passive gives bonus
Must buy vs crit champions or AS champions, (Yasuo, Gangplank, Vayne)
    Wouldn't recommend but not bad.
Very good item on Irelia, get 2nd item if you need autoattacks more than burst.
I almost always buy this against an ap heavy team as a substitute for ghostblade.
Haven't tried but have seen it on snowballing Irelias.
If your primary purpose is to splitpush, this is a fantastic item for applying constant pressure. you will be less of a factor in teamfights tho.
Cleaver is a great substitute for youmuu's ghostblade if you need hp desperately. Also very good against tanks, if you need to solo carry against tanks, get this after trinity and get bork and you will be a monster.

In addition to these recommendations, The basic trend I follow is get damage early, tankiness later.  If it is a 1v9, I would try to get tanky after trinity just so you can survive and carry.  Also, don't get guardian angel if your team is considerably behind, as your team will not be able to save you.

In lanes such as Heimerdinger, Vladimir, Ryze it is better to rush Hexdrinker, then finish Trinity force before finishing Maw of Malortius.  The Hexdrinker passive is insane early game vs ap tops, however, the stats from trinity force are too good to delay in the build.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Chogath is a pain if you can't dodge his circle. If he misses his abilities make sure to punish him early, as he will be unkillable once he gets his first item. If you are ahead, just make sure when diving him under turret to keep in mind of his silence. Corrupting potion isn't bad start but I would consider Doran's Blade start since it is vital to win the lane early.

VS

Darius

Medium

Darius is extremely strong early game, start e level 1, and don't trade with him.  Only stun him if he is blatantly in your creep wave, or he is already on top of you and you need to get away.  Avoid trading with him until level 4, however be careful as he is still really strong.  If the lane is even you win trades at level 7 guaranteed.  DO NOT FIGHT AT LEVEL 6. Start corrupting pot or cloth armor, depending on your confidence in the matchup.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Easy matchup.  Start E level 1, you can start trading him at level 1.  Watch out for his q poke, as it can add up over time.  You win at all points of the laning phase until he gets too tanky.  If you plan on trying to kill him try to bait out his ultimate before doing so.  Start corrupting potion.

VS

Ekko

Medium

If the Ekko is an experiened Ekko, this is a hard lane to win.  Start e, try to avoid his 3 hit passive until you start trading with him, which should be around level 4. He will most likely push you in 24/7, so this is a lane that's easy for a jungler gank. If you get stunned by his w, just back off because you will automatically lose the trade.  At level 6, save you bladesurge for when he ults as it can gap close.  Start corrupting potion.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Skill-based matchup.  Start e level 1, don't trade with her level 1 except for stun auto.  Start fighting level 4, however, try to predict her parry as you will lose trade 100% if she parries your e.  At level 6 you have more burst potential, but make sure she doesn't hit the 4 ulti vitals or you will die.  Make sure to not get parried when trying to q her.  If her parry is down you automatically win trade.  Start corrupting potion.

VS

Fizz

Medium

This lane is extremely tense, one mess up from either player can lead to heavily favorable trades.  Don't initiate on trades early, on retaliate.  Try to save your w until after he jumps, as his jump can waste time on your hiten style damage.  Do not fight at level 6 as his ultimate is extremely stronger than yours.  basically wait for one of his abilities to be used then trade with him.  Similar approach to riven lane.  Start corruption potion.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Start q level 1, if he q's on you just q back. This lane is all about outsustaing gangplank then bursting him when he's low, so you want to trade with him, especially before he gets his barrels.  Start fighting at level 4.  Remember his e (orange) can cleanse your stun so be aware of that.  Start corrupting potion.

VS

Garen

Hard

A good Garen is extremely annoying as he can deny you cs while also giving you low kill potential.  As for ganks as he is extremely vulnerable when pushed up.  Avoid too much q damage in the early levels, then you can start trading level 4.  From level 7 onward you win unless he is ahead.  If you are behind consider roaming, as you will be more effective.  Start corrupting potion.

VS

Gnar

Easy

Try to avoid level 1 poke, once his level 2 mega gnar phase is gone, you win trades.  Always try to trade with him when he's mini gnar.  Try not to trade with him if his fury bar is almost full. Start corruption pot.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

This matchup is really annoying.  You will be denied cs early, just accept it.  Start q, get any cs he allows you to.  You will not trade with him until you get items, level 7 is probly a good estimation.  Tip: An auto q will destroy one of his turrets.  HEXDRINKER HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  start corrupting potion.

VS

Illaoi

Hard

This matchup is pretty annoying. Even if you are up 2 kills she can still kill you.  Don't trade with her unless she misses her pull.  Punish her heavily for missing her pull, as that is the only time you can trade.  You almost always lose 1v1's, I would ask for ganks, or try to roam mid as this lane is a difficult one.  Start corruption potion or cloth armor.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

Jarvan's dueling potential is really low, making this matchup easy. Don't trade with him till level 4, since he deals a lot of damage at level 2.  Keep your cool even if he ults, as he doesn't have a lot of follow up damage.   You win 1v1 100% if you didn't mess up early game.  Start corrupting potion.

VS

Jax

Medium

This matchup is relatively easy early game. Play passive level 1, if Jax starts e (which he should) and walks on you just stun and walk away.  Starting fighting at level 4, but always try to bait out his counterstrike before going in, as it is a powerful spell against you. Level 6 for you is better than him, so once he counterstrikes if he tries to fight you you will beat him.  Eventually in the late game he will outscale so don't try to 1v1 him at level 16ish.  Start Corrupting Potion

VS

Jayce

Medium

This lane is annoying early, you will be zoned out of cs due to his poke.  Avoid trading until level 4.   Get sheen first, as he is a squishy champ that you need to try to burst.  Try to dodge his poke under your turret, and ask for a gank if he's harassing you under turret.  Start corruption potion.

VS

Kennen

Hard

Kennen has tons of harass that you can't really respond to because of his triple proc stun. Only try to trade at level 4 if he's missed a couple of his abilities.  His level 6 is much stronger, try to punish him when his ultimate is down.  Hexdrinker rush is not bad, but trinity force is also an option.  Start corrupting potion.

VS

Kled

Easy

Try not to get hit by his chain as he can deal a lot of damage while you are under that cc.  If the lane is even at level 4, you win the lane from then on.  However, be careful, he sets up ganks very well and you will most likely not escape. Start corrupting pot.

VS

Malphite

Medium

This lane is a farm fest, neither of you really have kill potential.  Try to bait out his abilities as he is a mana hungry champion.  Push him in always unless you benefit from denying him cs, then jsut freeze. Try to roam since you cannot kill him.  Corrupting pot, buy stinger first.

VS

Nasus

Medium

It is important to zone nasus out of cs early game.  Stand on top of low minions really hurts his cs ability, as he will most likely q you instead of the minion. Try to E him if he comes near you and starting autoing him , you will win the trade early.  If he starts e, you have to trade with him once he e's the wave, or he will just keep pushing you in.  Get stinger or sheen if you are ahead, if not buy phage. If you want to tower dive him, makes sure he uses wither on you before. Start corrupting potion.

VS

Nautilus

Medium

Like malphite, nautilus is very hard to kill.  Avoid trading until level 4, then try to bait out his shield.  Without his shield nautilus will lose trades 100%.  Be careful of ganks, he sets up them up well.  You win after level 4 in 1v1.  Start corrupting pot.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Avoid trading until level 4, be careful if you lose a trade since he can chase you down. You win at level 7 if the lane is even.  Start corrupting pot.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

I absolutely hate this matchup because pantheon's spears hurt A LOT and they are on low cd. Get cloth 5, just focus on farming under turret.  His passive also makes it impossible to trade early.  After level 6, your chances improve as your ultimate makes dueling to your advantage, while panth's ult doesn't help in dueling.

VS

Poppy

Medium

This is another lane that will be very hard for you to get kills.  Do not stand between her and walls as she will always outtrade you if she bumps you into a wall.  Also while her gold circle is around her, your q will get blocked, so wait for that to go down before qing to her.  You win lane at level 4. Corrupting pot.

VS

Quinn

Hard

Very annoying, since she can poke and disengage with her e if you find the jump on her.  All in at level 6 if hp disadvantage is minimal since her ultimate does not aid her in combat.  Start corrupting potion or cloth armor.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Avoid trading until level 4, do not fight when his rage bar is full.  Try to trade when his dash is down.  Be careful of Renekton's burst combo, (e, w, auto, q, auto, e) as you will not be able to return the damage.  Get Corrupting pot.

VS

Riven

Medium
Normally, against a good Riven, you will most likely lose this matchup unless you've played this matchup before. At early levels just e and AA then run away if she q's onto you, as it is good harass. Try to avoid trading with her, until level 4, then avoid again when she gets her ulti.  You should by no circumstances all in her when all 3 of her abilities are up, since her hard cc will burn you.  YOU WILL ONLY WIN THE TRADE IF AT LEAST ONE OF HER ABILITIES ARE DOWN. Her level 6 is stronger than yours so wait until level 7 when your w is maxed before trying to kill her.  Start corrupting potion

VS

Ryze

Medium

Ryze can poke you out early so avoid trading until level 4.  Watch out for his shield as it can massively sway the outcome of trades. You can trade at level 4, but safe bet is waiting till 6.  ALL IN AT LEVEL 6. Hexdrinker rush is an option.   Start corrupting pot.

VS

Shen

Easy

You can win trades as early as level 3, just don't autoattack him while hes in his circle. You win the lane at level 4 onward unless he outplays you or gets a gank.  Start corrupting potion.

VS

Sion

Medium

You lose trades until level 4, and even then you have to be careful for his stun.  If you can avoid his stun, you will win the trade.  Try not to get slowed by his minion push.   you can cancel his stun if you e him and stun. Be careful while all-inning, since his passive can kill you after you kill him. Start corrupting potion.

VS

Swain

Hard

Very annoying, you almost have no chance of kill him unless he messes up.  However, if he misses his root, punish him since you will win the trade.  He can harass under tower a lot, so call for ganks.  His ultimate is extremely powerful around minions so keep that in mind.  Rush wit's end or hexdrinker, not trinity force unless you somehow are ahead.  start corrupting pot

VS

Teemo

Easy

Very annoying early but you should kill him at level 6/7, even if he has a kill on you.  When all-inning, it is optimal if his blind is down, so try to bait out his blind.  Get sheen first so you can burst him.  Start corrupting pot.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Be careful trading early, his crits are unpredictable.  DO NOT FIGHT when his rage bar is full.  If ahead, rushing ninja tabi will make you unkillable.  If you are less than half hp when his ult is up just run away, he can kill you.  Before ever attempting a kill, make sure you have triggered his ultimate before hand.  Start corrupting pot.

VS

Wukong

Easy

Start trading at level 4, respect his level 6, then you win from level 7 onward if the lane is even.  Make sure when he stealths, run forward, so he cannot run away from you.  Start corrupting pot.

VS

Xin Zhao

Easy
Xin Zhao is an easy matchup, don't fight until level 4 or 5, as his early game is very strong.  After level 5, you win if you didn't mess up early.  Start Corruption pot.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Yasuo is very strong early, avoid trading until level 4.  When trading at even hp, ALWAYS auto before you stun him because of his 100 hp passive shield.  You should win after level 6.  Be careful that he doesn't windwall your ultimate.  Start corrupting pot.

VS

Yorick

Easy

Make sure you all-in yorick, as he will always outpoke you with his ghouls.  After level 4, this is an easy lane.  Watch out for his trap as he can poke you without an opportunity for retaliation. Start corrupting pot.

When Irelia is a good/bad pick Back to Top

Irelia thrives on being a mobile source of damage while also being tanky enough to survive being in the front line.  She is an optimal pick when:

1. Enemy team has immobile carries with little to no cc: (Jhin, syndra, miss fortune, veigar)
2. Less tanks on the enemy team, the better
3. Your team has a tanky cc engage (Nautilus or leona support, zac or vi jungle)
4. Enemy team has only one or no champions with lots of cc

Irelia is not a great pick when:

1. Enemy team has loads of cc (leona support, nautilus top, zac jungle)
2. The carries are mobile and hard to kill (vayne, katarina)
3. Your team has no tanks (khazix/rengar jungle and sona/lux support)

Because Irelia is an autoattack reliant champion, you rely on being able to stick on your opponents.  This is why immobile carries are bad against irelia because she can surely one shot unless they flash.  On the flip side, this is why Irelia is not a good pick against team comps with lots of cc, because you will not be able to get all those autoattacks off.

Strengths/Weaknesses Back to Top

Strengths:

1. Farms extremely well under turret, almost impossible to have poor cs numbers
2. No extremely hard counters that she can't deal with
3. Not mechanically hard
4. Can snowball pretty hard, especially with trinity force
5. Everything you want in a top laner: Tanky, Does damage, decent split pusher, good team fighter, very good tp ganker
6. Decent (not spectacular) at escaping ganks if jungler comes from behind
7. Great at fighting with low health
8. Lots of outplay potential
9. She is an anti-carry: that is, if the enemy has a fed adc/apc she can kill them no matter how fed they are
10. Very hard to turret dive

Weaknesses:
1. Needs kills to be effective, an irelia with a low amount of gold is useless
2. Very vulnerable after combo is blown
3. Ultimate is pretty weak at all stages in the game, virtually useless late game
4. Damage falls off late game
5. Extremely weak early game
6. Very easy to poke out in lane
7. If q is on cooldown easy to lock down
8. Does virtually no damage to tanks in the mid to late game
9. Wave clear is not great until she has 2 damage items
10. If enemy adc has qss her effectiveness in teamfights is limited

Levels 1-3 Back to Top

Against melee:

1. 95% time you start corrupting pot
2. Play passive, E AA if they come close to you.
3. ALWAYS let lane push to you unless you are against Nasus.
4. Always level up W 3rd.

Against Ranged:
1. Start q always
2. Hide in bushes, q for cs
3. Do not ever trade in these levels under no circumstances

Levels 4-8 Back to Top

Against Melee:

1.  Look to trade, especially if opponent started doran's item, because you have more potions
2. Optimal time for jungler to gank due to your increase in power

Against Ranged:

1. Wait till level 6 to fight, then at level 6 all-in
2. Try to force opponent out of lane, you are now stronger
3.

Levels 9-13 Back to Top

This is the time where you are strongest because your W ability will be maxed. You need to abuse that.

(If you don't have trinity force by this time, disregard these tips until you have it)

In lane: If your lanes are doing well, freeze and deny cs from laner you will be stronger given the lane is even. If your lanes aren't doing well, try to get the top turret ASAP and roam.

At this point you should start roaming, you need to spread your advantage to other lanes (if you have decent amount of cs/kills).  Your goal needs to be to kill your enemies because Irelia needs kills to be effective. This will allow for you to increase your advantage and take objectives.

Levels 14-18 Back to Top

You are still strong at this point, however, you can be locked down easily at this stage of the game.  Prioritize Guardian's Angel if you haven't gotten it by now, surviving in fights is crucial at this point.  If their tanks blow their cc, jump onto enemy AD Carry and blow your combo and they will likely die or be zoned from the fight.  Expect to give your life for the ad carry, which is good because when it comes to teamfights their AD carry is way more valuable than you so the trade is advantageous.

Many people think Irelia's are supposed to engage, however, you are not supposed to engage.  Wait for tanks to engage, and enemy tanks to blow cc, then jump in.  If you are only tank, it is best if you wait for enemy team to engage first.

Random Tips Back to Top

Quickly close the gap and surprise your enemy:

How to chase your enemy through minions:

Warding gromp will give you an escape route when pushing tier 2 tower:

Split pushing Properly Back to Top

Irelia's waveclear is pretty poor, so it is important to shove efficiently and quickly to maximize your splitpush potential.

Normal Irelias will only use bladesurge to push:

This does conserve mana, however, it is extremely slow and makes you an inefficient splitpusher.

How to Fast push properly

1. Turn on w
2. Auto, Q the 3 caster minions
3. Auto melee minions, use e for auto reset, always last hit with Q
