Summoner Spells Back to Top

Summoner Spells

red_line.png

4.png Flash is the first Summoner Spell that I recommend you take when playing Irelia. This is because Flash is the best Summoner Spell around thanks to it being reliable and instant. It can be used offensively as well as defensively. You can also Flash in conjunction with some of your abilities.

12.png For the second Summoner Spell, I recommend you take Teleport. Teleport will allow you to get back to lane quickly and also help your team out- especially as Irelia may be split pushing in the later stages of the game.

14.png Alternatively, instead of taking Teleport you may be able to take Flash and Ignite. Ignite will allow you to be a threat early game and allow you to consistently kill the enemy Top laner. The problem is, Ignite is a high risk/high reward Summoner Spell. Only take Ignite if you can consistently win lane and kill the enemy laner.

Runes For New Irelia

red_line.png

Thanks to the new Precision Rune- 13003d6fa9393a112.png?width=32Conqueror, many Toplaners finally have a good Rune that they can take. 13003d6fa9393a112.png?width=32 Conqueror is really good on 39.png Irelia because it gives her bonus damage when she goes for trades. As 39.png Irelia is a champion who loves to get onto the enemy and once on them- is hard to get off, taking this Rune benefits her play style. The next Rune you should take on 39.png Irelia is Triumph.png?width=32 Triumph. Triumph.png?width=32 Triumph is a very good Rune because it will give you healing and gold whenever you get a kill or assist. This is really helpful in team fights as it can often save 39.png Irelia's life. 39.png Irelia should be played to go in, and getting healing through the Rune will allow you to survive for longer. The next Rune is only taken because it gives you attack speed, Legend%20Alacrity.png?width=32 Legend: Alacrity gives you more attack speed which will allow you to deal more damage in fights. The final Rune in your main tree is Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32 Coup De Grace. This is a good Rune to help you clear up low-health enemies. Overall, this Rune page is relatively helpful to protect you in team fights and deal extra damage to the enemies!

red_line.png

For the secondary Rune Tree, you should take Resolve. I recommend taking Resolve second because it's very reliable and it comes in handy in the toughest of matchups. The first Rune you should take is Bone%20Plating.png?width=32 Bone Plating. This Rune is very good when it comes to trades as it protects you from consistent damage from the enemies. For example, when going for a trade with the enemy, if they start to return damage on you, this Rune will reduce the damage. The final Rune for 39.png Irelia is 5abd57da0f30230001f3edd9?width=32 Chrysalis. This Rune gives you bonus health in the early game which will allow you to survive for longer.

Irelia's Ability Rundown

red_line.png

Irelia’s Passive is Ionian Fervor

39.png Irelia gains 1 Ionian Fervor stack for every enemy champion that is hit by her abilities which stack up to 4 times. ireliapassive.png Ionian Fervor lasts for 6 seconds with basic attacks to champions and monsters refreshing the passive’s duration.

ireliapassive.png Ionian Fervor: 39.png Irelia’s basic attacks deal bonus damage per stack. At maximum stacks, 39.png Irelia gains bonus attack speed and deals additional damage against shields.

Screenshot-2018-4-16 Irelia.png

red_line.png

Irelia’s Q is Bladesurge

Passive: Enemy champions and monsters hit by ireliae.png Flawless Duet and ireliar.png Vanguard’s Edge’s initial barrage are marked for 6 seconds. This mark is consumed when Irelia dashes to them with her ireliaq.png Q.

Active: 39.png Irelia dashes to the target location dealing damage and 7.png healing herself.

The cooldown is refunded if the target was marked or dies to her ireliaq.png Q.

Screenshot-2018-4-16 Irelia(1).png

Tips and Tricks

Your ireliaq.png Q is very versatile as it can help you get in and out of team fights. During the laning phase, it’s possible to use this to farm, however, we do not recommend you use it to just farm. If your ally is going to gank your lane, you can use your ireliaq.png Q as a gap closer and get close to the enemy. For example, you can ireliaq.png Q on a low health minion and then ireliaq.png Q again on the enemy champion.

Remember that you can use your ireliaq.png Q on the enemy twice if they are marked with ireliapassive.png Ionian Fervor.

red_line.png

Irelia’s W is Defiant Dance

First Cast: 39.png Irelia aligns her blades around her and gains 1 stack of ireliapassive.png Ionian Fervor. Whilst channelling her ability for 1.5 seconds, she will reduce all incoming damage. This ability cannot be interrupted.

Second Cast: After a delay, Irelia swipes her blades in a target direction dealing damage to all enemies around her and in the line of fire.

The Second Cast activates automatically after channelling.

Screenshot-2018-4-16 Irelia(2).png

Tips and Tricks

Your ireliaw.png W ability is very unique and will be one of the mains ways you can stay alive to ganks. This ability reduces incoming damage for a brief period of time which can really help you out and save your life. When using this ability, make sure to have the cursor pointed into the direction of the target so you can deal some damage to the enemies once you’ve finished casting it.

You are unable to auto attack or deal damage whilst channelling this ability.

red_line.png

Irelia’s E is Flawless Duet

39.png Irelia sends a blade to a target location that lasts up to 3.5 seconds. 39.png Irelia can then recast at another location to send another blade out.  If she doesn’t recast this ability, then it will automatically recast at her current position (as long as she is not affected by crowd control.)

Once both blades have been placed on the ground, they fly towards each other after a small delay and stun all enemies that are struck by them.

Screenshot-2018-4-16 Irelia(3).png

Tips and Tricks

Your ireliae.png E will be mainly used when going for trades and using to escape ganks. Your ireliae.png E can stun targets who are in between both swords. When going for trades, you can use the ireliae.png E besides the target, and then again to the other side of them. This is almost guaranteed to stun them.

When using the ireliae.png E, make sure to try to predict where the enemy is going to be moving as it can be quite difficult on moving targets.

Remember your ireliae.png E gives you ireliaq.png Q stacks!

red_line.png

Irelia’s Ultimate is Vanguard’s Edge

39.png Irelia launches a barrage of blades through a line in the target direction. They explode outwards upon hitting an enemy champion whilst dealing damage to all enemies it strikes.

The blades form into a spade-shaped perimeter around the explosion which knocks aside all enemies. Enemies that the pass the blades (inside or out) are dealt damage, disarmed (meaning they are unable to auto attack) and get slowed for a brief period.

Screenshot-2018-4-16 Irelia(4).png

Tips and Tricks

Your ireliar.png Ultimate is quite strange and very unique- just like your ireliaw.png W! Your ireliar.png Ultimate is best used when the enemy is together all bundled up. Thanks to the AOE, it can really help swerve team fights and make your team come out ahead. When using your ireliar.png Ultimate, beware of the cast range and how big it is. Practise makes perfection when using this ability.

In trades, you can use this at the start of the fight to get the enemy in a position where you can ireliae.png E and ireliaq.png  Q them.

Remember your Ultimate gives you ireliaq.png Q stacks!

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Corrupting Potion is the best start for Irelia because it gives you a lot of sustain in the early game.
You could take Doran's Blade if you're against an easy matchup where you are going to win.
The final option is Doran's Shield. If you're against a ranged champion then you will need to take this item.

Core Items

Your first core item is going to be Trinity Force. This is a must have on Irelia and is incredibly important for her.
For your second item, you should pick up Boots of Speed. You want to upgrade them to either Mercury's or Tabi's
Your third major item is going to be Titanic Hydra. This item is great in laning and team fights. Remember to use the active!
Sterak's Gage is your 4th item. You need this item to buff your team fighting. It also gives you alot of damage and sustain in those fights to save your life!
Your 5th item is going to be Guardian's Angel. GA is a great item on Irelia and it will allow her to survive teamfights thanks to the passive.
For your final item, you need to purchase a defensive/tank item. In most games you will take Spirit Visage to buff your W and healing. Take the item you need.

Situational Items

You may need to purchase early Ninja Tabi if you're against a ranged champion in the laning phase. Take this in conjuntion with Doran's Shield to protect yourself against their early game advantage.
If you're against an AP champion early such as Swain, Vladimir or any Mages. Then you should pick up an early Hexdrinker. You can get this whilst buying Trinity Force. You need this ASAP to protect yourself.
If you are struggling in lane, then you should pick up an early defensive item. Here are some possible items that you could take on Irelia. Take the item that is most suited for your game.

Items

red_line.png

39.png Irelia has a few different possible starting items. It is important to take the most appropriate starting item to get the best start to the lane. If you choose the wrong option, then it may cost you the early game. 39.png Irelia is not that good in the early game, so it is important to take the correct item to give you the best outcome early. The main starting item you will be taking is 2033.png Corrupting Potion. You should take this in most matchups because it gives you sustain which 39.png Irelia will need to survive early. The alternative start is 1055.png Doran's Blade if you're in a good matchup such as against a tank and the final option is 1054.png Doran's Shield. You take 1054.png Doran's Shield if the enemy is a ranged champion.

red_line.png

Your first core item on 39.png Irelia is going to be 3078.png Trinity Force. This is the best first item for her because it gives her a lot of early game damage, sustain and overall the item is really good. The item itself gives her everything that she needs throughout the game. Your second item is going to be 1001.png Boots. You can get either 3047.png Ninja Tabi or 3111.png Mercury’s Treads depending on what you need in this game. If the enemy is heavily AP related, then you should get 3111.png Mercury’s Treads. If the enemy is mostly AD with a lot of ranged champions then I recommend 3047.png Ninja Tabi. If you’re against a ranged champion during the laning phase, then you could pick up 3047.png Ninja Tabi early as your first item with 3078.png Trinity Force being completed second. This is situational so pick the item you need first and second.

red_line.png

For your third item, you should be looking at 3748.png Titanic Hydra. 3748.png Titanic Hydra is a good item on 39.png Irelia and it will allow her to effectively split push in the later stages of the game. This item will allow her to quickly push waves, deal with enemies and also deal more damage as a whole. In team fights, make sure to use the active to reset your auto attacks and deal even more damage to the enemies! For your next item, you should get 3053.png Sterak’s Gage. 3053.png Sterak’s Gage is a great little item on any fighter but more so on 39.png Irelia because she is a single target champion thanks to her kit. In team fights, this item will buff you and make you stronger and improve your survivability with the shield it gives you. For your 5th item, you will be getting 3026.png Guardian’s Angel. 3026.png GA is a good item on 39.png Irelia because of the bonus damage and defences as well as the item passive. 39.png Irelia will benefit from this item because it will allow her to come back to life in team fights and deal more damage to the enemy champions.  For your 6th and the final item, you should get a defensive one. I recommend either 3065.png Spirit Visage, 3194.png Adaptive Helm, 3110.png Frozen Heart, 3143.png Randuin’s Omen or 3075.png Thornmail. Take the item that you need.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

You can easily kill each other. Try your best to farm what you can and put the enemy behind. Beware, you can easily die if you get too cocky. If you do not win this matchup early then do not worry- just try to farm and deny the enemy and go for trades when it is save.

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

This is a frustrating matchup because the enemy has range and can constantly poke you out. Try your best to farm what you can. Do not get to aggressive or cocky because they can easily kite you out and burst you down.

Your job against champions like this is to just survive and pick up the scraps of CS you can. If you need help learning to lane against ranged champions such as this one- read below on how to lane versus ranged champions.

VS

Darius

Hard

Darius is a pain to play against because of his passive. Every auto attack and ability he uses will apply bleeding to yourself. So, you want to avoid fighting him directly or at least- when trading, do not fight for to long. This is because the bleeding will stack up. In this matchup you need to play really safe and avoid fighting him unless he uses an ability. If he uses his Q, use yours and get away.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

You should do extremely well against this champion because they lack damage early and are not very strong for the first few levels. Try your best to go in for an early trade and try to kill them. You should be able to win against them early.

VS

Garen

Easy

Against this champion it’s pretty simple. This is a farm lane which you can win if you bait them for your Jungler. However, you must not underestimate the enemies damage because they can kill you and deny you from a bad trade.

Against them, you want to farm and harass when they go for farm. Beware of the enemy’s CC and try to dodge it with either your Q or hitting them with your E.

VS

Gnar

Medium

This is a skill matchup and can go either way. You can easily kill each other. Try your best to farm what you can and put the enemy behind. Beware, you can easily die if you get too cocky. If you do not win this matchup early then do not worry- just try to farm and deny the enemy and go for trades when it is save.

VS

Gragas

VS

Kayle

Hard

In this matchup the enemy has the range advantage. You need to pick up early Ninja Tabi to block some of their damage. It is going to be really hard to lane against this champion so you need to play relatively safe. VS

Swain

Medium

This enemy champion is AP and has the range advantage. Unfortunately, you are going to have some trouble early. In this matchup you will need to purchase early magic resist. As Irelia has a range of defensive items that work on her, you have a few choices. You could get early Mercury’s Treads or you could get a hexdrinker. In the early game you will need to play relatively safe, and wait for them to waste an ability before going in for any trade.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

Tips and Tricks

red_line.png

  1. If you are going to miss out on some CS, you can use your ireliaq.png Q to quickly snatch them up. Generally, you do want to avoid using your abilities to last hit, however as your ireliaq.pngQ is a reset, using it in some situations is fine.
  2. When you cast your ireliaw.png W, you will be immobile. In some situations, this is good however it can leave you off guard. I have seen plenty of dives gone wrong thanks to this ability. If you are being dove by the enemy, hold off using your ireliaw.png W until they are being focused by the tower.
  3. Hold on to your ireliaq.png Q if the enemy is ganking you. You can use your ireliaq.png Q to escape by using it on an enemy minion.
  4. If the enemy team is grouping and are all bundled together you can try and catch somebody with your ireliar.png ultimate. Using your ireliar.png ultimate, and hitting an isolated target is one way of coming out to head in team fights. It really depends on who the enemy has - but in general, you want to use your ireliar.png ultimate on a squishy target.
  5. Your ireliae.png E can be difficult to see this means that you could use it in a variety of ways. Try your hardest to outsmart the enemy and use your ireliae.png E's display to your advantage.
  6. Unlike the old Irelia, your ireliapassive.png Passive allows you to use your ireliaq.png Q multiple times if they affected by your other abilities. This will allow you to get into the team fight and allow you to do extra damage to the enemy. If they are marked with your ireliapassive.png Passive, you can ireliaq.png Q them and still get a reset.
  7. Your ireliaq.png Q will be reset if the enemy dies or is ireliapassive.png marked when targetted. This can be used to get in and out of team fights, and also allow you to escape lane ganks.
  8. 39.png Irelia is still very new, and not everybody knows how to play against her. This can give you the upper hand in the laning phase.
  9. Your ireliar.png Ultimate can be used in a variety of ways such as to start the fight or peel for your carries. If your allies are caught out of position, throwing your ireliar.png Ultimate at the enemy will protect them enough allowing them to escape.

red_line.png

Early Game Back to Top

Early Game

red_line.png

The early game for 39.png Irelia is pretty good since her rework in early 2018. In the early game, you should not really level anything up until you get to the lane, this is because you may need to use something different in case the enemy invades or cheeses you. Most of the time, you will be starting ireliaq.png Q first so take it as soon as you get into the lane.

Once in the lane, you want to level up before the enemy-which is the first 6 minions followed by one of the melee minions on the second wave. You should aim to get level 2 before the enemy in each situation because they may deny you if they get it before you. As you will ideally hit level 2 first, once you hit it, you should go in for a trade. This is an optimal time to go in because you will have both your ireliaq.png Q and your ireliae.png E and you will be able to stun/ fight the enemy.

You can continue to go for fights frequently throughout the laning phase and try to kill the enemy.

Things to remember in the early game;

  • Before going for any trade, check the map.
  • Keep an eye on the minion wave and how many minions there are. If the enemy has more, it may not be a good time to go for a trade as the minions will focus you.
  • Always look at which minions have low health and be prepared to use your ireliaq.png Q on them and then on to the enemy.
  • Don’t miss out on easy CS! You can use your ireliaq.png Q to last hit some minions if you have too!

red_line.png

Mid Game Back to Top

Mid Game

red_line.png

The mid-game is where this champion really shines. During this stage of the game, she will have some items and she will have a lot of damage. Thanks to the items that you are buying, you will be able to easily kill enemy champions who are relatively squishy. During the mid-game, you have a few things that you need to do.

The first is to remember to continue farming and gaining gold. During the middle part of the game where teams are grouping, players usually forget to farm. Because your item choices are not necessarily cheap, you should continue to farm and get a gold lead when you can. When you are playing Irelia, you need to continue applying pressure and being a nuisance to the enemy. Because of your ireliaq.png Q and your ireliaw.png W you can easily fight/escape if the enemy comes to chase you.

39.png Irelia I can be played in one of two ways, she can't be split pushing and applying pressure or she can be grouping and help her team. However, I feel that 39.png Irelia is best played as a champion who applies pressure to the side waves, and then rotates and helps her team. You cannot necessarily out right fight the enemy because of your champion mechanics. So you may have to flank and attack from the side. This will allow you to surprise the enemy and also come out ahead in team fights.

Like stated the mid-game is where she shines so you need to abuse your power spikes through items and objectives to win the game. If you are unable to outright team fight, then you may need to play the split push game. Remember when spit pushing, that your team needs an advantage. If I find out what about switching there will be a link below.

red_line.png

Late Game Back to Top

Late Game

red_line.png

In the later stages of the game, you need to fight the enemy and come out ahead. Because 39.png Irelia doesn't necessarily have the strongest 5v5 fighting chance, it is better to catch the enemies out of position. You can do this in numerous ways such as baiting around objectives and hiding in bushes.

In team fights, you have to really focus down the enemy backline. Because 39.png Irelia really is such a unique champion, and because of her ireliaw.png W - you can easily kill the enemy back line. Your ireliar.png ultimate is also very helpful for this because it knocks away enemies so if you can catch somebody out of position then they're a free kill.

Things to remember in the late game:

  • Avoid fighting just before Baron comes up as if you get caught and die the enemy can take the objective.
  • You should avoid hugging the bottom side of the map if Baron is up.
  • If the enemy comes to contest Barron or any objective be prepared to turn.

Just remember, the late game is where games can be won or lost. Do not get cocky, play around your team and also be prepared to back off. Don't overextend or greed for objectives because if you died the enemy will end.

Pros and Cons Back to Top

Pros and Cons of Irelia

red_line.png

Pros of Irelia:

  • Newly reworked and she is much better- a massive improvement, well-done Riot!
  • Mechanically difficult which makes her more fun (compared to old 39.png Irelia)
  • Has outplay potential thanks to her ireliaq.png Q and her ireliae.png E.
  • Her ireliaw.png W can allow you to survive tower dives thanks to the damage reduction.
  • Your ireliar.png Ultimate can be used in a variety of ways which can benefit your team.
  • She has kill potential early.
  • New so not many people know how to play against her, this can benefit you and allow you to get the advantage in lane.
  • Her ireliae.png E is hard to see, which can be a benefit but also a drawback

Cons of Irelia:
  • New so not everything about her is yet discovered.
  • Still has some flaws (like most melee champions, she doesn't do great against poke in the early levels.)
  • It's easy to outplay yourself.
  • Now she has been changed, she is much more mechanically intense which can leave newer players struggling to grasp her abilities and gameplay.
  • Her ireliae.png E can be quite difficult to hit.
  • You are immobile whilst you cast your ireliaw.png W.

red_line.png

Team Fighting Back to Top

Team Fighting

red_line.png

Team fighting for this champion is pretty straightforward and thanks to her newly designed kit, it is much better compared to the old 39.png Irelia. You now have reliable forms of CC and hard engage, you should use this to your advantage by catching somebody out of position. At the start of the team fight, you could use your ireliar.png ultimate on the enemy front line or the enemy back line- it really depends from game to game. Try to hit an enemy champion who is out of position so you can easily kill them. Is important to remember that you need to catch somebody with your ireliar.png ultimate because of the ability itself- catching somebody in it will allow you to pick up a kill.

If you cannot fight straight away in a 5v5 setting, then you need to catch enemies out of the position. This can be quite difficult if teams are grouping. So you need to be very patient and wait for the right opportunity for somebody to miss step. If your team is full of hard engage champions it may be difficult to start the fight. In this situation, it is best to flank from the side. Flanking in League of Legends is very useful because it can often catch the enemy out of position or off guard. Thanks to your ireliaq.png Q You can easily get into the team fight and focus down a champion.

If you are behind and do not have a lot of damage, you may have to pay off your Carry. Use your ireliar.png Ultimate and your ireliae.png E defensively to protect them and keep them alive.

Please note: Team fighting is very situational, if you play 39.png Irelia a lot, you will notice patterns in when you can engage and when you cannot. Try your hardest not to get caught out and always make sure that your team is nearby to follow you up.

How to Lane against a Ranged Champion Back to Top

How to lane Melee vs Ranged

red_line.png

In League of Legends, there are a plethora of champions with different shapes, sizes and abilities. Many champions are melee and are recognizable by their point blank basic attacks. If you’ve ever played a game of League and if you’re reading this, you would know how unfortunate and painful it is to play as a melee champion against a ranged one.

Many players seem to give up the laning phase when they see that they’re against a ranged champion. Fear not! We will discuss some things you can do in these matchups to help improve your laning experience. Using the information presented will allow you to be more active in lane rather than giving it over to the enemy.

Starting Items

If you are a champion that doesn’t have the best early game, then I recommend starting with Doran’s Shield. This item is good as it gives you some early defensive stats that will benefit you in the early levels and help you sustain. Realistically, you will be unable to always trade exclusively against ranged champions. Taking early defensive stats will allow you to survive for longer during the early stages of the game.

Dorans Shield is a great starting item.

The item itself gives 80 health and flat health regeneration every 5 seconds. This is good because it will heal you back quicker when you are attacked. It will also restore health when taking damage from enemies. I do not recommend taking harass for free, but in some situations you will have to take damage to farm. This is overall a really good item to start with because it will allow you to survive in lane for longer against the enemy's harassment.

Level 1/2

In Melee versus Ranged matchups, the lane is quickly dictated by who hits level 2 first. In the all matchups, you will want to hit level 2 first but especially in melee versus ranged. If you do not get the level 2 first, then you will be denied minions and farm. While you may not be able to do anything against Ranged champions early, it is important to hit the level 2 to stay up in CS. Being an equal level will prevent the enemy going for extremely trades in the early levels. This will also prevent you from being poked out and losing minions and the experience. Farming is something you need to do and you must make sure to keep the wave in a reasonable position so you can farm easier.

Trading

Going for early trades against champions with ranged can be one way of swinging the lane into your advantage. If you can get the level 2 advantage, then you can go for a trade if the enemy is still level 1.

You can try to fight them if you have ranged abilities such as Akali Q, Zed Q and Talon W. However, this is very situational and depends on the champion you’re playing and who you’re against. It is recommended to look up your champion's power spikes. Most Assassins have the opportunity for an early level trade such as Zed’s W+Q combo. Champions who deal damage will benefit more from these early level trades compared to tanks.

Ability Farming

Most champions in League of Legends have at least 1 damaging ability. Some of them cost mana, some cost health and others cost energy. If you're in a matchup where you are being heavily denied CS from a champion with range, then I recommend trying to farm with your abilities.

If your ability doesn't cost any mana, then it is possible that you can farm with that ability. Dr. Mundo, The Madman of Zaun, has his Q ability that doesn't cost any mana but instead health. This ability will refund the cost if you kill the enemy hit. This can be a good way of farming because you are able to regenerate and get the cost back immediately or over time.

There are some other champions that can benefit from using their abilities to farm with such as Zed. While this sounds good on paper, it is highly situational. You should not, and I do not recommend using your abilities to only farm with. You need to poke and last hit. If you are only farming with your abilities, then you lose all your poke potential. You should not use your abilities to farm if they have high mana costs.

Sacrifice CS for Experience

Getting farm is incredibly important. In lanes where you will be poked when going to take farm, it is best to sacrifice some of them for the experience. While you do need gold and minions to buy items, experience and staying alive is more important. You need to stay up in CS and levels to still be hazardous to the enemy. While high elo players suggest getting a high amount of CS at 10 minutes, in lanes like this you will have to take what you can get. I recommend always trying to get Cannon minions, but be prepared to sacrifice some. Is that minion gold worth the amount of harassment from the enemy? Keep that in mind when farming.

Itemization

Depending on your champion, you may need to pick up more defensive items early. If you’re a tank and playing against someone with range such as a Kayle or Swain. I recommend buying early armor or magic resist before getting your first core item.

In Season 7, Bramble Vest was introduced and it is an amazing item. It’s a mini Thornmail with the same “Thorns” passive. It will deal damage back to enemies when you’re being attacked from basic attacks. This is good as it will allow you to deal damage to them when they attack you. At 1000 gold, the item grants 35 armor which will also help you when trading and farming.

There are many other defensive items out there. Some may be more viable then others and you should build what you need right now to survive the laning phase. Ninja Tabi is another good example of an early defensive item. However, you should only get this item if you will directly benefit from it.

Minion Wave

In every laning phase, you should play around with minion waves to get the most out of your lane. This depends on your champion, but you should try to have it in a more defensive position outside of your tower. You do not want to push the wave because the enemy will easily freeze the wave in a position much further up in the lane and deny you CS. This is something you do not want to happen. When backing or roaming, push the wave as far as you can so they cannot take your tower. Minions will act on instinct and if you’re being attacked by autos from the enemy champion, they will switch targets. This means the wave may mess up - keep that in mind when playing around with minions.

Roaming

If you’ve messed up the minion wave and are being heavily denied, then you should roam. If you are a champion with any potential CC, then you can look to roam and rotate with or without your jungler. Before roaming, make sure that it will be worth it. Push the wave so the enemy cannot take your tower. Look for potential opening in the game where you can gank your middle or bot. Wait for the enemy to use a core ability before going ham.

You must remember that you will be in a disadvantaged position at the start of the game. It is important to farm up and play safe especially early. You should try to position the wave in a favourable position to sustain a high level of creeps while also staying healthy and not being poked easily by enemies. It is better to stay a few CS behind early rather than having to back because you took too much aggro. Practise makes perfect when playing melee versus ranged. Every lane is different so keep an eye on what you can do to have the best possible outcome to this laning phase. In many cases, experience matters as League of Legends is a very, very situational game.
