Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png As with 99% champions, Flash is a fantastic defensive and offensive summoner, and should be taken in all games

3.png Considering Janna is primarily a defensive champion, Exhaust is a fantastic summoner spell to facilitate this playstyle. With the ability to lock down an enemy's damage, it's perfect to protect yourself or a teammate from assassins and other fed enemies. It also has some offensive power, with the ability to slow down an enemy. I'd recommend taking Exhaust in 95% of games

14.png Janna is not orientated towards a particularly aggressive playstyle, thus Exhaust is typically the better option. However, if you have faith in your ability during the laning phase, your ADC, and there are no major assassin threats on the enemy team, Ignite is a strong summoner spell to use in an aggressive lane to secure early momentum. It can also be taken against healing supports 16.png37.png267.png to cut their healing in half and increase the chances of a kill

A standard ranged defensive support page.

It is possible to take Siegemaster instead of Explorer when against an extremely aggressive bot lane (such as Caitlyn/Zyra, or Lucian/Karma), but I consistently prefer Explorer for quicker roaming potential and warding.

jannapassive.png - Don't forget about Janna's passive - though the effect may be subtle, it can be really useful in helping your team reach objectives quicker, so make sure you watch your positioning.

howlinggale.png - Howling Gale provides a good, tough sometimes difficult, form of CC; knocking up enemies in a line for a duration depending on the charge time. A lot of skill involved in Howling Gale is predicting where the enemies will be when the tornado is released - this takes practice and intuition. Howling Gale can be maxed 2nd considering the cooldown is greatly reduced with each point increase, and less of a cooldown means more tornadoes, but this is down to personal preference - I personally prefer the consistent CC provided by Zephyr, and the movement speed increase. Howling Gale should be leveled up at level 2 though, and should be used to set up a good amount of poke on the enemy once you and your ADC reach level 2.

sowthewind.png - Zephyr is a multi-dimensional ability: passively, it increases Janna's movement speed and allows her to move through units, but when used, Janna loses the passive ability to slow down an enemy. Zephyr is a fantastic ability to max second considering it not only provides a better slow for each point put into it, but it also increases Janna's movement speed to roam around the map faster and escape enemies easier.

eyeofthestorm.png- Janna's Eye of the Storm is her bread and butter ability - it's a fantastic shield, it has a relatively low cooldown, and it increases the target's attack damage. This should always be maxed and taken first, unless you are planning an invade or are having to repel against an invade; in either of these cases, take howlinggale.png first.

Build Order

Start with: 3340.png 2009.pngx3, 3303.png or 3301.png

First back: depending on how well the lane is going: 3098.png or 3096.png or 1028.png

Next back: 2049.png 1001.png 3341.png

Next back: 3158.png  2301.png or 2302.png

In order: 3107.png3504.png or 3190.png3504.png or 3190.png3109.png

2055.png are bought throughout the game.

3303.png - Given the emphasis I place on playing most Janna lanes aggressively, Spellthief's Edge accommodates this playstyle perfectly. Moreover, considering the recent updates, the completed question variant of this item is incredibly strong at the moment, and definitely increases the quality of the item.

3301.png - Ancient Coin can be taken in some defensive match-ups to counter champions Janna gets completely out-poked by, but I find the quest reward and new coin/mana drops mechanic to be very underwhelming, and not as useful as the Spellthief's Edge line of items. Nevertheless, Ancient Coin has its uses when against tough lanes.

2301.png - Another personal preference, but I find the (relatively) cheap and quick method of obtaining a 4 ward item to be brilliant - warding is invaluable, so to have an extra ward is fantastic to have. I personally find 3092.png to be underwhelming, and the active effect does not justify buying it; particularly on Janna, as you are not looking for stray enemies to pick off and blow up.

3158.png - Again, a personal preference, but I highly value CDR and I appreciate the unique 10% Summoner Spell CDR provided by these boots. Getting such a major boost to CDR so early in the game is exceptionally useful. Whilst 3117.png can be picked up for better roaming potential, I don't believe Janna needs the extra speed given her inherent speedy nature; I believe the passive from Zephyr provides more than enough movement speed.

3107.png - A fantastic item at the moment - awesome use in team fights, and provides extra strength to Janna's shields and heals (all of the 3114.png items are excellent on Janna) - what's not to love?

3504.png - A brilliant item to enhance your ADC or another fed AD member to provide them with extra sustain and damage. Again, Janna's shields and heals are improved, while movement speed is also provided to ensure more speedy getaways from Janna. It can be difficult to decide between 3504.png and 3190.png after building redemption, and your decision will likely depend on the game state - if you're behind, Locket is generally better, but if you're ahead or your team is being carried by one AD champion, I'd recommend Ardent.

3190.png - Another fantastic defensive item, considering the AoE shield provided by the active. As much as I love the active, the raw stats are a slight deterrence, considering  3114.png is not a component, meaning the stats are not particularly useful on Janna.

3109.png - Janna's last item will again vary on the game state, but I believe Knight's Vow to be a fantastically underrated item in the late game when ADCs damage is insane, yet they are extremely vulnerable to being one-shot. Though the stats don't benefit Janna massively, the defensive and offensive capabilities provided by the item more than compensate. Knight's Vow is best used on your most fed member to ensure they survive.

3222.png - The most viable of the 'situational' items, buying Mikael's will depend on the game state and who you're enemies are - if you need to protect a vulnerable yet fed ADC, this is a perfect item to do; particularly against champions with heavy targeted CC, such as Lissandra. Moreover, it builds out of 3114.png, a fantastic item for Janna.

3041.png - A somewhat viable item on Janna considering how easy it is to get assists (by just using Eye of the Storm) and generate stacks; if you're having a good game and are feeling lucky, this can be an incredibly potent and cost-efficient item.

3050.png - Although Zeke's Harbringer functions as another item to buff a fed member, it has a fairly awkward build bath, and I don't feel it does enough compared to 3504.png and 3109.png. However, if you are intent on buffing up one fed member of your team, this is a viable option.

3110.png - Though Janna doesn't want to build tanky items, and would much rather go for 3114.png items, sometimes it's necessary for you to build this item on your team to counter a heavy AD team.

VS

Alistar

Easy

Alistar is one of the many melee champions Janna can counter; when Alistar engages, Janna can disengage. His Headbutt/Pulverize can be interrupted with a well-cast Howling Gale, and his melee status means he is easy to poke down during the laning phase.

VS

Annie

Medium

While Annie can seem very intimidating with her high damage and burst potential, don't underestimate Janna's ability to bite back - Annie is an extremely squishy champion, can be out-traded with a self-cast Eye of the Storm. Obviously Annie's level 6 is terrifying, especially when paired with a CC-based ADC (Ashe/Varus).

VS

Bard

Hard

Bard is a tricky opponent for Janna - he has better damage, engage, and healing than Janna. He can be traded with if you play around the Cosmic Binding well, but don't underestimate his damage when he has some meeps following him.

VS

Blitzcrank

Medium

Blitzcrank is another melee champion Janna can easily poke down, and he only has one threat: his hook. Dodge his hook, and he is near useless and is merely a target dummy to damage. Just make sure you dodge the hook

VS

Brand

Hard

Brand has an incredible amount of damage for a support, and an amount Janna can not trade back with. This is one of the few lane match-ups I would recommend choosing coin, due to the fact it is incredibly difficult to trade efficiently with Brand without putting yourself in dangerous situations. Respect his damage and his lane dominance.

VS

Braum

Easy

Braum is another melee champion Janna can poke down for free damage. While this can be a little more difficult to accomplish due to Braum's Unbreakable, he is still a melee support looking to engage with his Winter's Bite and Glacial Fissure which Janna can easily disengage from. Janna is a nice pick into Braum compared to other ranged supports, considering Janna does not have an important spell easily absorbed by Unbreakable (such as Nami's Tidal Wave or Karma's Soul Flare).

VS

Karma

Medium

Karma is, in my opinion, one the funnest match ups in the bot lane for Janna, and is one of the best skill match-ups. Whilst Karma has the edge in damage potential due to her Solar Flare, don't underestimate the damage Janna can deal back with enhanced auto attacks courtesy of Eye of the Storm. Be wary of her Focused Resolve when you have used Zephyr and have lost its active, as it can be difficult to escape its range; otherwise, it's typically easy to escape with a quick Howling Gale.

VS

Leona

Easy

Similar to Alistar and Braum, Leona is a melee engage support Janna can easily disengage from; her defining combo (Zenith Blade into Shield of Daybreak) can be interrupted with a well timed Howling Gale, and, aside from when Leona has Solar Flare, Leona is rendered useless and is nothing more than a sitting duck for Janna to poke down.

VS

Lulu

Medium

Similar to Karma, Lulu is another fun, skill-based match up. The advantage will depend on the Lulu's Pix and Glitterlance usage, and you should be way of Pix's positioning at all times. Again, do not be intimated by Lulu's damage - Janna has the potential to fight back.

VS

Malzahar

Hard

Malzahar is a tough lane opponent for Janna; similar to Brand, I'd recommend picking up Ancient Coin for this match-up. Malzahar's damage output is incredibly strong for a support, making it near impossible for a Janna to evenly trade back; exacerbated by his passive mostly preventing him from being interrupted by Howling Gale. Respect his damage and play safe.

VS

Morgana

Hard

Morgana is a very tricky opponent for Janna - she has more consistent and stronger CC, more damage, and the ability to block out any of Janna's attempts to disengage through her Black Shield. Though it is still possible to take Spellthief's and trade well with Janna, this hinges upon your ability to dodge her Dark Bindings; if those keep missing, Morgana's power is greatly reduced.

VS

Nami

Hard

Similar to Karma and Lulu, Nami is a fun and skill-based match up. Nami has the edge in damage output (her Ebb and Flow into enhanced auto attacks can be devastating), but she also has the distinct advantage in sustain. Ancient Coin in not necessary in this match-up, as Nami can be evenly traded with, but know that you'll likely lose the poke war. However, Nami is very squishy and vulnerable once you get up close to her - with smart, aggressive play, it can be easy to kill a Nami once you get close to her with a quick Howling Gale and Zephyr to set up your team.

VS

Rakan

Medium

Rakan is still a fairly new champion, so it's difficult to confidently say how Janna plays into him. However, considering how mobile and engage-focused Rakan is, he is a perfect champion for Janna to disengage from. Both his Grand Entrance and Battle Dance can be interrupted with Howling Gales (though these are very tricky to land; trickier than interrupting a Leona or Alistar combo), and any attempts to charm your team with The Quickness can be put to a stop with a Monsoon push-back. However, Rakan is a persistent charmer, and it can be difficult to permanently keep him away.

VS

Sona

Medium

I feel people overestimate how scary Sona is in lane. Undoubtedly, she is scary - she has the potential for a ton of poke and sustain. However, she is incredibly squishy, and she does not have as much sustain as she would appear; her Aria of Perseverance costs a lot of mana in the early game for a very small heal. I'd recommend fighting fire with fire in this match-up - play aggressively, shield yourself and keep poking her.

VS

Soraka

Medium

Soraka's are an inconsistent bunch - they can either be incredibly annoying in lane with Spellthief's, or can play much more passively using Ancient Coin. Either way, it's a fairly easy match-up between Soraka and Janna. Considering Soraka does not look for engages, Janna's main strength of disengage is weakened. However, her ability to poke and disrupt is not, and Soraka's can be traded evenly with. Soraka's will likely win the sustain war with well placed Starfalls though.

VS

Tahm Kench

Medium

As much as I'd love to group Tahm Kench with the other melee engage supports Janna can easily poke down, he's just not that kind of support; he is much more annoying. He's extremely tanky, his tongue lash has a surprisingly long range, and even Janna's increased movement speed can't stop a Tahm Kench meal if he lands said Tongue Lash. Do your best to poke him as much as possible (mainly for the gold generated by Spellthief's, as it's difficult to get through the abundance of health Tahm Kench has), but respect the potential and range of his tongue lash - even one hit can result in a death.

VS

Thresh

Medium

Just like Blitzcrank, Thresh revolves around his hook, though the rest of his kit is far more versatile compared to Blitzcrank. Thresh is another melee support so has the potential to be poked down by Janna, but be cautious - Thresh's can engage with his Death Sentence and Flay - you must respect these engage tools and back off from poking when necessary.

VS

Vel'Koz

Hard

Personally, playing against Vel'Koz supports is the most infuriating experience I have as a Janna main - it's not possible evenly trade with him, his damage output is incredibly strong, and his Plasma Fission can be incredibly tricky to dodge. This is definitely a match-up to pick up Ancient Coin and AFK under the tower.

VS

Zyra

Hard

Unlike other ranged supports Janna struggles against, Zyra has no inherent sustain or shielding, thus Janna has the potential to evenly trade with Zyra; using EYe of the Storm to absorb damage and enhance auto attacks. However, do not underestimate Zyra's damage, and respect the fact it's much higher than Janna's, especially in longer poke-wars - once your shield is up or you've used all your abilities, run.

Laning Phase Back to Top

I believe a lot of people perceive Janna as a passive laner: they buy Ancient Coin, they use Eye of the Storm on their ADC, and they play a defensive laning phase against the majority of opponents. I believe this greatly underestimates Janna's ability in the laning phase - Janna has fantastic opportunities to poke, especially with Spellthief's Edge! Using Eye of the Storm on yourself and moving in to use a couple of enhanced auto attacks is a great way to poke down the enemy without taking much damage yourself - Eye of the Storm shouldn't solely be used defensively or for your ADC offensively during the laning phase. Most of the time, your ADC will be concentrating on farming, so it's your responsibility to initiate poke and encourage the ADC to follow suit.

You also need to be aware of when it's best to use Howling Gale - you should primary be using auto-attacks to poke (and sometimes Zephyr), but knowing when to use and when to save Howling Gale is crucial. One of my favourite times to use Howling Gale is just as my ADC and I reach level 2 - I move forward, use a quick Howling Gale to knock up my enemies, and hope my ADC has followed suit to get off a nice chunk of damage. However, you also to be ready to use Howling Gale defensively; whether that be disrupting a jungler gank or the enemy support from engaging. This takes practice and intuition, but well timed Howling Gales can win a laning phase.

Finally, don't be afraid to roam as Janna - her increased movement speed means Janna can quickly move around the map. Even though Janna's potential to roam to another lane isn't as strong as other supports with an emphasis on engage, don't underestimate the presence you bring when ganking; simply having another champion's set of abilities to use is enough to secure a kill.

Team Fights Back to Top

Your role in team fights will vary depending on the game-state, but generally, your objective will be to protect your most fed member at all costs; peel, protection, and enhancement are areas where Janna shines. Your Eye of the Storm usage will be crucial - whilst you may be inclined to solely shield whomever the most fed member is, this may not always be the best usage: they may be an AP champion, meaning they don't benefit from the AD boost as much, or they may be safe from damage at on point in the fight. You must be flexible in using your shield, and realise the shield may be better used on another team member; for example, if they are a tank close to dying, or an AD assassin diving in at the start of the fight to get off a quick burst of damage.

Similarly, you must be flexible and considerate with your use of Monsoon. Considering how much impact Monsoon has on a team fight, functioning as a massive reset button, you have the potential to harm your team, rather than hinder them. The best use for Monsoon will vary depending on the game state and the enemy team comp: sometimes your priority will be to knock back the incoming assassin ready to one-shot your fed ADC, whilst another game it will be to separate the enemy team to pick them off one by one. Again, knowing the best usage of Monsoon will come with time and practice.
