Summoner Spells Back to Top

The best duo of summoner spells for top lane is by far 4.png and 12.png4.png is the best summoner spell in the game, and there is no reason not to take it on Jax. Teleport, despite its nerfs, is still very strong for staying ahead early and split-pushing late. Take 11.png when jungling. 14.png is a good spell for having kill pressure early, but I don't think it is nearly as useful as 12.png. Though it may help with certain match-ups, some of the new keystone masteries help in a similar way.

Masteries Back to Top

First of all, this is only one of three main mastery tree setups I use. I'll explain this one now and then post links to the other two later. This is the tree I use in lane for Top lane almost every game that my opponent is melee. When I explain the other setups, I'll only explain the new masteries I haven't explained yet to keep this short.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First Setup

Fury - Kind of obvious choice. Attack speed is great in lane.

Double Edged Sword - Good for having damage throughout the entire game. Before the nerfs, I took feast over this, but I feel like having the extra damage is more important for the entire game than having the sustain in lane. Expose Weakness is just bad on Jax, so don't take it.

Vampirism - This helps with having a little sustain in all phases of the game and stacks rather nicely with early doran's blades. I take this over Natural Talent because I feel like Vampirism provides more overall than some measly AD and AP.

Bounty Hunter - Okay, this is where some Jax players differ. I don't think Oppressor is bad, because is it better early on, but I feel like Bounty Hunter is more useful for late game damage and become permanently better after getting 2 or 3 unique kills.

Unyielding - It synergizes really well with your ultimate and provides a decent chunk of extra defensive stats in a fight.

Tough Skin - This is good against both melee and ranged champions, primarily for ranged, for blocking a little bit of damage in lane and from jungle camps if you do any early on.

Veteran's Scars - Despite being way nerfed way back when from being a % max health increase to a small flat amount, it is still good to have in lane. Only take Runic Armor over this if you have two or more champions on your team with good heals and shields.

Insight - The cooldown to 4.png and 12.png is really good in lane and for split-pushing late game, especially if combined with the Distortion enchantment on your boots.

Swiftness - This is another one where both in this tier are really good. Having the bonus stats from Legendary Guardian is great if there are not major CC threats, but if there are then Swiftness is better to keep yourself from getting locked down.

Grasp of the Undying - Okay, this keystone guys. OMG. This does SO much for you in lane and in late-game teamfights. It's great to have in lane because not only is a heal, but it steals this health form you opponent, which means it's a heal and damaging mastery in one. It is very good in lane for quick little trades, and makes some difficult match-ups much easier. Two examples being Wukong and Renekton. It is great late game because with a full build, you can be healing for around 100 every 4 seconds in combat, which stacks quickly if you are tanky and in an extended fight.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Second Setup

This is the setup. The points in the ferocity tree are the same as before, so I won't talk about those.

Savagery - This is good for laning because it makes last hitting a little easier under tower. Wanderer is a little useless in my opinion unless you are a support, so take Savagery.

Secret Stash - Great for having a little extra instant sustain in lane. This can, however, be traded out for Assassin if you want the extra damage in lane.

Merciless - Mana isn't really an issue for the most part if you can manage it, so having this extra damage is great in dangerous fights.

Dangerous Game - Really good for surviving fights where minions or DoT damage may kill you. Bandit is pointless in lane, this will serve you better.

Precision - This is really strong on Jax later on in the game if you are doing a hybrid build. Since Jax deals a lot of mixed damage, having dual penetration will add a nice boost. I take this over Intelligence because it provides more late game than an extra 5% CDR. CDR is fantastic on Jax, but you don't need 45% of it.

Thunderlord's Decree - This is really freaking good on Jax in lane. Since you can build up the stacks on minions, if you auto a minion twice and then jaxleapstrike.png with jaxempowertwo.png and the third hit bonus from jaxrelentlessassault.png, you will deal an incredible amount of burst damage in one hit. This also adds a lot of extra damage later in the game if you are running a hybrid build, since it scales off of AD and AP.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Third Setup

This is the last main setup. All but two of the masteries in this setup have been explained already, so this will be short and quick.

Battering Blows - Really, both of them are good, but i just depends on which form damage is higher in your build. I usually just take this one for all builds because you will be primarily auto attacking, and because you deal high physical damage from abilities as well.

Fervor of Battle - This mastery is part of the trifecta of badass keystones you can use on Jax, along with Thunderlord's and Grasp. The damage stacks really well with Jax's passive attack speed gain, so it makes dueling him in extended fights difficult early and nightmarish later, since it can provide over 100 points of extra physical damage on autos.

Relentless Assault - His passive is a stacking self-buff that gives you a massive amount of Attack Speed. You will want to have this stacked at all times if possible because a smart opponent will jump you when it is down. At max stacks it can give 88% Attack Speed, so this allows Jax to build more damage or tank rather than actual Attack Speed.

Leap Strike - This is a targeted ability. It deals damage to enemies, and can also be used on friendly units to escape. It works on champions, minions, monsters, wards, 17_64.png Shrooms, 59_64.png Flags, and some others. But be careful, because this skill is technically a DASH ability so you can't "leap over" shrooms and traps; they will still hurt you. Also, if, say, Jax is Flayed out of the air mid-leap and doesn't make it to his target, they can sometimes still be damaged. I max this ability last against melee laners, but first again ranged opponents like Satan himself > 17.png.

Empower - Always max this FIRST against melee opponents. I see other Jax players max their Q first and I completely disagree. This is your main source of damage on him. If you max Q and they start building Armor, you are screwed. If they start getting Armor and you max W first, then they will have reduction to magic damage. Oops, getting off-topic. Empower is a self-buff that enhances your next auto attack or leap strike to deal bonus magic damage. It has a very short cooldown when it is maxed. Also remember, it is an AA reset. This means that if you use it right after an auto attack, you will attack again quickly with an empowered attack. This is used for faster damage output and can stack your passive and ult passive faster.

Counter Strike - This ability... is one of the few reasons I love Jax so much. It is what makes Jax counter all the champions that he does. It let's him dodge all auto attacks and abilities that act as auto attacks for a short period. After which, he will stun all enemies around him. Getting dodges will increase this skill's damage by 20% for each dodge, up to 5 times. So this ability can do double its normal damage if you get 5 dodges. It also reduces AoE damage by 25% for the duration. Use this to your advantage if you want to get an early kill. What I do is I push the lane to hit Level 2 first, jump on them with q and then Counter Strike. Normally, you would be taking minion aggro, BUT you dodge the minions too, which will almost always instantly give you the 5 dodges you need. At Level 1, with any of the three keystones I talked about, and 5 dodges, this skill does a lot of damage if you can orb-walk your opponent to their tower, and will generally force them to blow their flash if they don't want to die. I always max this second against melee champs now that 3078.png gives CDR. Stacking some CDR early with put this ability on a low cooldown very quickly and will still keep Leap Strike at a decently low cooldown too.

Grandmaster's Might - This is Jax's power spike. It passively gives you bonus magic damage on each consecutive 3rd auto attack. and when activated it gives you flat Armor and Magic Resist that scale with bonus AD and AP respectively. This means that if you build tanky, you will still get a lot of Armor and Magic Resist, and if you build full damage, you will get EVEN MORE. Building full damage on Jax works very well becuase for 8 seconds he can become a super tank and still deal ridiculous amounts of damage. Max this whenever you can.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

This is a start for if your opponent has skillshots that you want to avoid.
This is for going aggressive early. I prefer to start this most of the time.
This is for playing passively and surviving in lane.
Another alternative start against ranged poke champions or Pantheon.
    Start this if jungling.

Core Items

Get Mercury's Treads or Ninja Tabi depending on the other team comp. Get Ionians if you are really far ahead.
These are core items for Bruiser-ish physical damage build. Goes well with Mastery setup 3.
These are good for a Hybrid damage build. Goes well with Mastery setup 2.
These are good for a tankier build. Goes well with Mastery setup 1.
These are good situational defensive items.
These are really good defensive tank options.
    Example Full Build with Fervor
    Example Full Build with Thunderlord's.
    Example Full Build with Grasp.

Situational Items

These are other niche items you can use of you wanna mix it up a bit.
All are good power boosts. Pink Wards are cheaper now, so don't be afraid to get one on every other back.
3047_64.png - These are for going against heavy AD.

3111_64.png - For against heavy AP and CC.

3158_64.png - For if you are far ahead and want more CDR.

3078_64.png - Simply Amazing. Makes almost anyone unable to 1v1 him early and he perfectly utilizes every stat. The changes to it made it even better in my opinion.

3153_64.png - Also Amazing. This gives a lot of solid stats makes him very hard to fight after you get one. Despite it being nerfed, it is still good against tanks and stacks pretty well with Fervor of Battle.

3146_64.png - This is very strong on Jax when combined with Guinsoo's. Gives a lot of damage and sustain and has a nice active.

3124_64.png - This item was always good on Jax and got even better when they reworked it. It gives him AD and AP, and a lot of Attack Speed, which not only stacks well wit his passive, but the stats it gives can stack and give you a powerspike during a fight, alongside its new on-hot AOE passive damage. This item is very strong at all points in the game and in any build, similar to Trinity Force.

3074.png - This is really good on Jax because it lets him clear waves very fast (which is a big weakness of his) and and he can reset his auto attacks with its active.

3115.png - Great for Hyrbid AP builds because it gives many useful stats and a great passive.

3748.png - This item is fantastic on Jax for tanky builds with Grasp of the Undying and the items listed above. The active is also an AA reset, which is even better.

3053.png - Really good for not getting bursted in a teamfight and synergizes with Trinity Force and Iceborn Gauntlet.

3022.png - Nice for sticking to those pesky champions that are hard to keep up with.

3156_64.png - Good item if you need both damage and MR. Now has Guinsoo's old Rage passive, which is cool.

3139.png - Also very good, but if you are more afraid of CC than burst.

3110.png - Fantastic on Jax because it gives Mana and CDR, while also giving a huge amount of Armor.

3742.png - Good for moving around the map a lot and initiating fights, catching someone out, or running away.

3025.png - Good defensive choice now that it gives 20% CDR and stacks well with Sterack's Gage.

3143.png - Great defensive item and lets you stick to targets much easier.

3102_64.png - Solid MR item.

3065_64.png - Also a good MR item. I would only get this over Banshee's when you have at least 1 item that gives Lifesteal or Spell Vamp.

3026_64.png - This is a stellar item for any high-damage champions and will make your opponents decide if they really want to focus you or not.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

He is pretty easy for Jax to fight. Just don't dive when his passive is up. You can take whatever keystone you want.

VS

Akali

Medium

Personally, I find her a very annoying person to fight. She outsustains and outbursts you. Then, when you try to hit her back, she shrouds. It's really annoying. However, her akalishadowswipe.png no longer procs her akalimota.png mark, and pink wards are cheaper, so fighting her is less of a hassle. I prefer Grasp of the Undying in this lane.

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

He is difficult if he is smart. And he is just hard to kill in general and he has good disengage. Take Grasp of the Undying against this guy in lane and try to farm.

VS

Darius

Medium

You outscale Darius in the lategame with certain builds, and his early game can hurt you a lot. Just play it safe and don't let him kill you. Take Grasp of the Undying and don't let him get five stacks of his passive on you or you are in for a world of hurt.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

I would put him on Hard, but he is fairly easy to beat if you play it right. Other wise he will tank everything you have and still do more damage. Grasp is good against him.

VS

Ekko

Medium

He has a lot of poke and utility. Take Grasp and fight carefully.

VS

Elise

Medium

For me, I've never had problems with Elise other than her harass and the fact that she can repel to escape your E. Thunderlord's is good against her, but the other two are alright as well because she can also go into melee form.

VS

Fiora

Hard

She is a huge pain in the ass in lane because of her new riposte. Her poking ability with herfioraq.png and passive is annoying as well and she is slippery to fight. Try to farm as much as you can, and be careful with your E when fighting her. Take Grasp or Fervor for this one.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Gangplank is easy as long as you don't fight him inside his ult or let him poke you down with barrels. Some GP's take Grasp so be prepared to be poked down a lot.

VS

Garen

Hard

Garen will punish very hard if you try to mess with him and whatever damage you deal, he will just heal it all back. Take Grasp in this lane and watch whether you are his passive's Villain or not.

VS

Gnar

Medium

He can win lane easily with his poke and burst. Take Thunderlord's and try to kill him in his little form.

VS

Graves

Hard

Super annoying, still trying to figure out how to beat him myself. Take Grasp or Thunderlord's and be careful of his burst.

VS

Hecarim

Medium

Can deal a surprising amount of damage if you are not careful. Take Grasp.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

Really annoying. Try to kill his turrets first if you are going to kill him. Take Thunderlord's.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Very deceptive burst damage. Don't try to gank her and avoid herillaoiE.png. Take Grasp and don't get poked down. Kill her tentacles when she isn't in lane.

VS

Irelia

Easy

She is also very easy. You just need to be careful of her juking your E. Apparently she can also stun you when you are both at full health now, so be careful when trading with her. Guinsoo's is really strong on her, so be careful of that powerspike. Take Grasp in this lane.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

He has a lot of damage in lane, but you also do. Take Fervor or Grasp and don't let him poke you down without a fight.

VS

Jayce

Hard

Harass. Harass. HARASS. So stupid! And if you jump on him, he knocks you back. Thunderlord's decree makes this lane a little easier, but he is still a pain in the ass. Try to farm as much as you can ask your jungler to gank (he can only knock one of you back).

VS

Kayle

Medium

She will harass you like Jayce and can disengage very easily. Diving her is not a smart idea when she hit level 6. Taking Thunderlord's makes quick work of her in lane if you max your Q and constantly jump on her.

VS

Kennen

Hard

He also harasses a lot and doesn't use mana. Take Thunderlord's. Try not to get poked too much.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

He should be no problem as long as you don't fight him while isolated early. Can take whatever keystone your heart desires.

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

He will hardcore out-damage you early and reduce your attack speed. Be careful with him. Grasp works really well against him. Fervor is also a good substitute.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

Try not to get poked down too much. Take Thunderlord's against her.

VS

Lulu

Hard

Really hard to kill because of her CC. Take Thunderlord's.

VS

Malphite

Hard

He is Jax's hardest counter. Lowers Attack Speed. Harass. Annoying. Take Grasp.

VS

Maokai

Medium

Really tanky and has sustain. Take Grasp.

VS

Master Yi

Easy

You should not lose to him. Period. Take whatever Keystone sounds like more fun and stomp his ass.

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

Deceptive burst, so try not get hit by the third hit of his mordekaisermaceofspades.png. Take Grasp.

VS

Nasus

Medium

He is not a threat early, but during the mid game and late late game is when he becomes a big problem. Take grasp in this lane and try to whittle him down with it and a 3057.png.

VS

Nautilus

Medium

Really high dueling damage, so don't fight him without your jaxcounterstrike.png. Take Grasp.

VS

Nidalee

Medium

Harass and Heals. Ugh... Take Grasp or Thunderlord's and try to kill her early.

VS

Olaf

Medium

He will stomp you in lane if you are not careful. Take Grasp and choose your fights wisely.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Harass. His shield also negates a good chunk of your damage in trades. Harass. Harass. SPEARS!!! I hate him so goddamn much. Thunderlord's pretty good for him in quick little trades. Can also take Grasp. Ask for ganks.

VS

Poppy

Hard

Really annoying to fight and has high damage as a tank. Try not to fight her too much and take Grasp.

VS

Quinn

Hard

Really annoying and obnoxious in lane. Take Thunderlord's and ask for ganks. May need to stay under tower to farm.

VS

Renekton

Medium

He is such a lane bully. He will usually out-everything you early. But you out-scale him late game. You can dodge his stun now, so watch for it. Grasp also makes this lane a little easier. You still want to play this lane cautiously though.

VS

Rengar

Easy

He is also easy as long as you don't let him harass you down a lot. Take whatever you want for keystones.

VS

Riven

Medium

Some Jax players can't beat Riven. For me, she is easy. The secret? Out-damage her and fight her at level 1. Start Doran's Blade and don't let her hit 2 first. I put her difficulty at medium because this is a huge skill-matchup. I personally have no problem against Rivens and will pick Jax into one as a counter-pick. Be smart when you trade with her and try to win lane really early when you are stronger. All 3 keystones are good, but I prefer Grasp against her.

VS

Rumble

Medium

He is a bit of a pain because he can deal a lot of damage very quickly. Take Thunderlord's.

VS

Ryze

Medium

Weak without his passive. Try to kill him early before he gets all his spells. Take Thunderlord's and don't fight him if his passive is almost fully charged.

VS

Shen

Medium

He is just hard to kill. Make sure you stun him if he tries to ult somewhere. Beware of his early damage and take Grasp.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

It depends on how you play and build. She can beat in a 1v1 if you don't have your E. Take Grasp or Fervor against her.

VS

Singed

Medium

Just try to farm early and take Grasp. It will help a lot.

VS

Sion

Medium

He is annoying in lane, but not unbeatable. Try to avoid his crypticgaze.png and enrage.png. Take Grasp.

VS

Tahm Kench

Medium

Really annoying in lane and hard to kill. Take Grasp and try to farm.

VS

Teemo

Medium

If you let him poke you and you don't return the favor, you will have a rough time. I let him poke me down at level 1 so he starts taking minion aggro while I push the wave. That way you hit level 2 first and then jump him and kill him. Take Thunderlord's and try to burst him down.

VS

Trundle

Hard

He is very annoying person because he can get away from your E, take your stats, and as his own sustain. Be careful with your ultimate when fighting him. Take Grasp to match his sustain somewhat.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

He is easy as long as you can kite him during his ult and save your Q for when he spins away. Can sustain a lot and has a lot of damage. Be careful of his early powerspikes and don't fight him without your jaxcounterstrike.png. Take Grasp or Fervor.

VS

Udyr

Medium

His early levels are rough but you can win a fight after you hit 6. Take Fervor or Grasp.

VS

Vi

Easy

She isn't a problem. Take Grasp or Fervor. Care for her burst though if she is building full damage.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

He will poke you down to nothing. Take Grasp or Thunderlord's and either try to kill him or sustain his damage.

VS

Volibear

Hard

He does so much damage. Be careful when trying to fight him. Take Grasp.

VS

Wukong

Medium

He is just annoying to fight against as anyone. Take Grasp. If your E is on and he clones, reactivate the stun immediately to hit him before he gets out of range.

VS

Xin Zhao

Easy

He is easy. Don't try to fight him without your jaxcounterstrike.png if he has Guinsoo's. Take Fervor or Grasp.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

I will admit. I have given first blood to almost every Yasuo I've ever fought (still not sure how, must be cursed I guess). But then I come back and destroy him. His first 2 levels are a problem and his shield can lose you trades. Take Grasp and dodge his yasuoQ.png.

VS

Yorick

Medium

It's Yorick... Don't really fight enough of them to tell you how to beat him. Take Grasp and try not to die I guess.

VS

Zac

Medium

Has sustain and a poke. Try to avoid his abilities and kill his blobs. Take Grasp.

VS

Zed

Medium

Don't waste your E or try to dive him. He has a lot of burst, so fight him carefully. Take Grasp or Thunderlord's.

Author/Tips and Tricks Back to Top

Hi, I am Kryonik and my favorite champion is Jax. He is my Top main so I decided to make a guide of my own. At the moment, I am Platinum I, and am trying to get to diamond. Here are some tips and tricks with Jax. Carry wards with you so you can place a ward over a wall and then Q really quickly to the ward to escape. When harassing, auto attack a minion twice, then Q to the enemy and then immediately Empower to proc the ult passive. Also, when initiating, use your E then Q and stun them for your teammates to follow up. There are many more tricks to Jax, but I am only listing a few. I will add the rest whenever I have time to finish this section of the guide.

A lot of people question my builds on Jax and why I take the Triforce/Titanic build over Guinsoo's, so you guys wanna know how I build against certain matchups with my items, runes, and master setups, let me know an I'll make a section to explain all of that.

If you guys like the guide please give it a thumbs up and leave a comment below. Feedback is appreciated. Thanks for reading.
