Summoner Spells Back to Top

Okay, this is something weird about my playstyle; I'm kind of a 1v9 player and I don't play top with TP like most people traditionally do. I tend to go early aggressive, prioritizing early first blood with the pressure it gives me. Jax has insane dueling and snowballing potential which means you'll be utilizing it a lot. Flash is mandatory as you can make some unpredictable plays with it and overall it makes your lanephase much more forgiving as you can escape ganks or use it aggressively to get yourself a lead.

TP is just too useful, majority of games you'll want to take this.

OVERALL TELEPORT IS A BETTER ALTERNATIVE IN SOLOQUE UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE A SPLITPUSH THREAT THAT CAN SNOWBALL HEAVILY AND KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. I MERELY ENJOY THE ASPECT OF GETTING FB/EARLY KILLS TO GET A SNOWBALL GOING WITH IGNITE. MORE FUN TBH

TP IS OP AS FUCK AND BETTER THAN IGNITE.

However, here's a video showing what kind of a scenario ignite can in the most optimal setting help create. Please play ignite because it encourages fun play instead of the traditional tp+afkfarm+iceborngauntletsunfiregrasp tank shit.

Here's another example of what first blood can lead into following perfect play:

New Runes Back to Top

I think press the attack is the best one simply because of the first blood potential it gives you in lanephase if you know how to abuse the power of counter-strike levels 1 and 2, others are quite obvious, you can replace triump with the overheal one for a mini bt-passive but I turretive a lot and have more use for the heal after takedown mastery.

Masteries Back to Top

Fervor of battle is really strong early in lane if you manage to prolong a trade. Nothing else stands out really in the phage, you can swap the 2-edged sword for feast if you'd rather go for sustain but otherwise it's pretty straightforward. The 12 points in resolve help a lot though, having summoners up is really handy and extra hp+durability help during trades.

Grasp of the undying is a possible alternative, however it scales off YOUR max hp and unless you're going to build hp early I don't think it's that good. Fervor of battle has a synergy with your passive as your damage and attack speed increase between every autoattack.

This is how I generally max, I used to max Q when a lot of ranged champions were meta but now that the game is shifting back to melee champions W might be a bit better, as it allows you to trade 2 autoattacks by utilizing the auto-timer reset. Q is a really versatile skill with many uses, however. You can escape, disengage, hop over walls to wards or minions or champions, use it as a nuke. It specializes against ranged champions however, as you can trade often and efficiently with this spell against them.

If you are against a champion that specializes in aggressive melee trading, then you should max Empower (w), as it's great in melee range short trades. This also works for free harass if it's somebody like Singed just walking to your caster minions to put some gas on them, you can just auto attack-w to reset your autoattack timer for a quick harass. Maxing Q against ranged champions is still better in my opinion.

There aren't really matchups that you should max your e (Counter-strike) against. Unless you are having a REALLY hard time against someone that deals majority of their damage through auto-attacks (such as Irelia, Tryndamere, Fiora etc) you shouldn't max this spell as it has more defensive properties than offensive.

Ultimate (Grandmaster's might) is pretty self-explanatory, you should always put a point on it when you can as it gives you great power spikes at levels 6, 11 and 16. The damage it adds to your autoattacks is insane and the free stats are amazingly good.

Relentless Assault

His passive, relentless assault, gives you attack speed on every autoattack. This passive has SO MUCH HIDDEN POWER you wouldn't even realize. Managing it properly means that you will have bonus attack speed worth multiple thousand gold. Controlling the passive is a perk that separates good Jaxes from the bad ones. Always keep an eye on the buff timer and try to attack at the last possible second to keep the stacks up. The attack speed will help your trading TREMENDOUSLY and I suggest you always ramp up the passive before you try to trade let alone all in.

Leap strike
As the name suggests, this skill makes you leap to an enemy. This ability is simply great. Maxing it is against ranged champions is optimal as it reduces the cooldown drastically, allowing you to escape with it or just use it to nuke somebody in lane. Has a minimal cast time if you are near your opponent which makes it a great trading tool. You can also use it to hop on a ward over wall for a quick escape. You can also activate W to boost its damage, but I rarely do that because w is much better used as an autoattack reset. Only use q+w if you are positive it will finish the kill.

Empower

A great ability, as it resets your autoattack timer and deals some good damage. You can alter your skill maxing path if you face someone who is melee and trades with you constantly, as this ability will be better in a matchup like that. It's best used after 6 by attacking once, resetting the autoattack timer by immediatly activating w and having your next attack proc ult. Really deceptive burst.

Counter Strike

The most Jax-defining skill in my opinion. It's a one-point wonder as an ability, it's great at level 1, it's great in every phase of the game really. It will make you pseudo-invincible to champions that rely on autoattacks, which makes many match-ups favourable for Jax in the toplane. However, If you use this skill just for the stun, you're using it wrong. There are occasions where you can use it just for that, but most of the time people take free damage by thinking stun is all this spell does. Always let it channel fully if you can, and try to only use it when your opponents disengaging abilities are on cooldown so you can maximize the impact this skill actually has on a duel.

Grandmaster's Might

A huge powerspike for Jax, this ability allows you to deal much more damage and tank more damage. It makes you a dueling monster and helps you trade in the toplane by hitting a minion twice and then leap striking onto your enemy and proccing the passive onto them. Makes for a great harass. After 6 you can also clear jungle quite fast, if you see your lane resetting somewhere you can get a camp before you go to lane as you gain more from that.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Very good overall for trading and sustain
    versus heavy ad counter matchups
VERY LOW SUSTAIN, POSSIBLE WITH TP
    yolo get that first blood

Core Items

    offense core
defense core (you can substitute banshee with spirit visage)
only versus team comps without remarkable hard cc
full build when youve fallen behind in early phases of the game
    full build when snowballing
Snowballing really hard but don't want to go quite defensive yet?
    a good 3rd item after bork+trinity
ap equivalent of mallet, procs the slow when you land q on somebody which can make things easier, more dps and burst as well

Situational Items

AP Jax is a lot of fun, rush nashors tooth into lich bane into haunting guise into rylai into liandry into raba.

There is no right build, you have so many options to choose from depending on the match-up, their team comp and your team comp. Jax can build so many different things depending on the situation you're in. Do not be afraid to experiment to see which builds you personally find strong or which compliment your playstyle.

Generally Jax has a weak earlygame, medium to strong midgame (depending on your performance) and godlike lategame. Some champions can give Jax a really hard time in lane, and corrupting potion is an excellent item to help you in trades while also giving you some good sustain.

24_64.png is really free to build and this is why you shouldn't have a hard time itemizing by their/your teams comp.

My opinion on most items you can build on Jax

3078_32.pngA great item overall, gives everything you want, you'll want to get this pretty much every game first or second.
3153_32.pngBlade of the ruined king was recently buffed back to its previous glory (6% current hp onhit -> 8%) and thus is a great item to rush again, especially in the current meta of tanks abusing CotC.
3111_32.pngThe boots you want in majority of your games. The tenacity is your best friend as Jax deals zero damage if chain-cced. You're not a Malphite who can just dash in and use kit and soak damage while waiting for CDs to come up. You deal sustained damage and you CAN be shut down through crowd control.

1055_32.png Very cost efficient and a worthwhile buy. I recommend atleast one during the early phases of the game.

3146_32.pngVery strong item overall on Jax, let's you slow with the active and have a great amount of sustain and burst damage.

3124_32.pngAfter the recent addition of flat attack speed it's pretty niche, it takes a slot and doesn't grant you much power unless you get to auto something for free. Great for splitpushing and diving people who come to defend though.

3022_32.pngPretty good if you need the hp, lets you dive carries and kill anyone you catch offguard with the slow. Really expensive though, you don't want this unless you're snowballing mega hard/last slot item to give you some HP when you think you have enough resists.

3110_32.pngA good buy on Jax, but I wouldn't go for it unless they are heavily reliant on attack speed champions, such as 39_icon_64.png10_icon_64.png and 67_icon_64.png/96_icon_64.png. It does offer some great stats though and CDR is insanely good at lategame with maxed E.

3026_32.pngNot that good in s6 , offers little resists while giving no HP or any other real good stats. Long cooldown. Build 3143_32.pnginstead. However, if you're required to 1v9, then this could be a decent buy.

3115_32.pngVery good item on AP 24_64.png in my opinion. Good gold efficiency, gives stats that Jax benefits from hugely and MASSIVE CDR. Only build it on AP Jax though, otherwise it will serve little purpose.

3139_32.pngIf you need to carry your team hard and you've reached real lategame, you can replace this with something from your inventory. Really expensive, don't buy it until you're full build. As of preseason 6, there are much better alternatives but the cleanse is very useful versus lockdown comps.

3025_32.pngThis item is REALLY efficient on 24_64.png, but only against full AD teams. Continuous procs from it will make your opponent glued to the ground while giving you armor, mana and cooldown reduction. Don't buy this one with trinity force though. And pretty much only when you're versus a team that deals minimal magic damage.

3091_32.pngIt's actually underrated for what it gives you. This item can be really useful versus heavy magic damage comps, it helps you duel and splitpush while making you pretty much invincible versus AP assassins thanks to the heavy magic resistance. It also steals magic resistance from your enemy which amplifies your magic damage while making you a bit tankier.

3083_32.pngNot as great as it used to be, but it's still good on 24_64.png nontheless. I don't find myself buying this item often as I prefer Randuin's Omen and Banshee's Veil over it, though. Frozen mallet gives similar amount of HP as well while glueing the opponents you manage to auto as well.

3065_32.pngA good item, it will boost the healing from Hextech Gunblade and make you considerably tankier versus magic damage champions. 10% CDR is a bonus, too.

3102_32.pngIf the enemy has hard engage or some sort of lockdown that you have a hard time avoiding, you should get this item.

3143_32.pngYou have a gapcloser, a dodge that combined with your ult makes you basically invincible for 2 seconds? Jump in and proc this instantly to lock them down. Insanely good.

3072_32.pngNah, don't build this in preseason 6.

3031_32.pngUnless you're snowballing INSANELY hard, I wouldn't recommend this. With Trinity Force you will have 40% crit though, which can give you the damage to 3hit any squishy that walks into your Q range. Only buy if you're absolutely sure you can't throw the game.

3046_32.pngYou don't need this. Get zephyr instead if you have to. Or Statik Shiv if you really want these stats.

3035_32.pngNot worth it, no.

3135_32.pngSame as above.

3071_32.pngThis item is a mesh of really beneficial snowball stats, which makes it a good buy but ONLY if you are snowballing heavily. And even then, there are better alternatives.

3068_32.pngClears waves faster but not gold efficient at all. If you are snowballing hard and want to invest in some offensive defense, this could work. Just remember, 930 gold for 40 or so dps (20~ after reductions) is awful.

3075_32.pngAre you against a fed 11_64.png?  It's good against autoattackers once in a while, not a core item though. IMO Frozen Heart is still better.

3156_32.pngI RARELY build this. Just don't think its worth the gold. Raw AD isn't the thing you want, really.

3087_32.pngYou don't benefit from the crit, but the passive and attack speed with movement speed is nice. It's not awful but it's not optimal either.

3082_32.pngYou can, and should, buy this against certain champs that rely on attack speed. Builds into 3143_32.png.

3043_32.pngVery hard to stack but it procs twice on your ultimate autoattack part and w, adds a great amount of damage but generally lackluster.

3074_32.pngClears waves faster but you generally don't want raw AD on on Jax. Blade of the ruined king is better in my opinion. Same goes for Titanic Hydra, it's just not that good on Jax and it feels a bit clunky.

3142_32.pngActive is pretty good and it does give you some nice stats, however there are better alternatives.

3001_32.pngYou shouldn't get this item on Jax.

3157_32.pngGolden dunk. q+zhonya mid-air for style points

3100_32.pngFor AP Jax this item is really good for splitpushing and assassinating, but otherwise it has no role if you're playing the basic bruiser Jax.

3089_32.pngAP Jax could benefit from this item greatly, on a serious build I wouldn't ever build it.

3006_32.pngTenacity is the best stat for Jax so I wouldn't recommend these unless the enemy team has absolutely no CC. Only get these if you're snowballing super hard.

There are always cases where some items are viable and some aren't. You should always take into account your own team and the enemy team, whether they deal magic dmg or physical dmg or do they have steroids against a certain damage type? A lot of CC or 5 squishies, assassins or tanks etc.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Relies too much on autoattacks to be able to trade you efficiently, use your E correctly and this lane should be pretty easy. Don't get baited by his passive though.

VS

Akali

Hard

Carry a vision ward always. Only take a trade that you can handle, the base stat nerfs Jax received really hurt this lane a lot as an akali after 6 will 100-0 you with full stacks on her ultimate. Don't get poked down by her Q during lane and be very careful not to let her proc it on you for free. You can fight her if her shroud is down.

VS

Alistar

Medium

He has a really easy time trading with you because of his disengages, try to only use e when you're positive he cant just headbutt you away or pulverize (q) you into the air and retreat. After 6 if you see him ult, just back off because you will not win an all-in vs alistar ult. BORK is good, try to abuse him if he uses both q and w as they have long cds and you will definitely win a trade where he has neither up.

VS

Azir

Hard

A really hard lane as he has insane lane control and safety. He can just disengage and poke you while you're getting away if you use q on him as an engage. Pokes very hard and overall strong currently.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Guinsoo. Will be a farm lane pretty much, he sustains so much that you won't land damage that will stay for too long. Be careful at level 6 of this 500 true dmg. Try to dodge all the ruptures and vorpal spikes.

VS

Darius

Medium

Reworked Darius has some potent harass and trade potential but if you use your e correctly you will win trades as it dodges his w completely. If he gets 5 stacks onto you he gets a really high AD steroid and you should avoid trading if that happens. Just try to dodge q harass. When you see him channeling it and you can't avoid it otherwise, leap strike onto him to dodge the blade part and deny him the heal.

VS

Diana

Easy

She's way too autoattack reliant to be able to beat you in lane, if she makes the mistake of coming to meleerange you can punish her severely. Don't get poked too hard, you should pretty much win throughout the laning phase. After 6 just go for the all in, you'll win for sure.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Really strong with the season 4 masteries, your best bet is to abuse his weak early game, coordinate a gank with your jungler and try to be really aggressive while not opening opportunities for their jungler to gank you. Blade of the ruined king is a must against him, ignite as well.

VS

Ekko

Medium

Toe-to-toe combat is where you excel but he can trade by hit&run much easier, try to avoid his q poke and don't stay around if you are low as he can execute you very easily. You can bait him into overcommitting into a trade if you have e up and low HP but be wary of his ultimate at all times.

VS

Elise

Medium

Not that common in the toplane anymore but still annoying to play against and Elise certainly has the edge in this fight. Try not to get stunned and if you do manage to bait the stun and dodge it, feel free to go all in. Beware of her rappeling when you activate your e. She has very weak basestats.

VS

Fiora

Hard

It's a skill matchup but after the rework Fiora was made into a really slippery and potent duelist. Overall unless she makes a grave mistake you shouldn't have an easy time killing her. Try to protect your vitals and make sure to use your E correctly or you will find yourself losing the lane.

VS

Fizz

Medium

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Try to avoid the barrels and be careful not to trade him when he has his passive true damage autoattack up as it hits deceptively hard. If his w is on CD and you have q+e up you should always force an all-in.

VS

Garen

Hard

New reworked Garen is really annoying to lane against, he will win most of the trades because of his nobrain kit and if you manage to snowball he will probably still beat you in all-ins and trades if you are the villain. Just try to get a bork and sustain and farm through the lane to get to lategame. Care of the ultimate.

VS

Gnar

Hard

He has the edge as he can kite you really efficiently and going melee vs him while he's on mega Gnar mode isn't smart.

His escape has a really long cooldown and your e works great against him. If his jump is on cooldown, feel free to trade or all-in him at any point of the game pretty much. BORK is great against him so he cant kite you. Always watch his passive bar as his ultimate can dish out insane damage while giving him health and stats, don't get cheesed by this and you should win the lane. Max Q.

VS

Gragas

Medium

Really annoying as you can't commit to a trade with his disengages and poke oriented playstyle. He's really safe and annoying to play against in lane, just be careful and try not to get poked low and then all-ined. Care of his W harass. He can trade in short bursts and can be hard to stick on.

VS

Hecarim

Medium

Hecarim can actually outtrade you hard if you let him trade in "cycles". (him being able to auto-q or q-auto you and retreating until he can repeat it.) His w will allow him to heal up a lot of damage during a trade so be careful of his early levels as they are quite strong. After level 6 you should be able to outtrade him as long as you can keep him engaged in the fight.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

This is a lane where I suggest picking teleport. Just afkfarm pretty much because he will just shove the waves to your turret permanently and you can't all in because his turrets deal hard damage when you step into melee range. After 6 you should all-in him if he makes the mistake of using his ult as it is the only thing keeping him safe from your all in.

VS

Irelia

Hard

A classic skill matchup where both of you have the potential to 100-0 eachother and the lane will snowball heavily into both directions depending on who performs better. Jungle interference can be a pain in the ass because it's so easy for Irelia to set up ganks with her e. Don't get too confident and attempt a dive because she can stall you under the turret for a long time while jumping around minions with her q and stunning you while healing with r. If your e is on cooldown, be very careful as she has insane burst potential. However, she has the advantage overall I would say as her kit is a bit better in lane.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

If he puts his flag down to a position where he can't escape using it, abuse it by leaping to him and trading. He can't escape and has to take a smacking.

VS

Jax

Hard

Mirror lane, if you play normals you'll get one of these once in a while. Try to be the first one to stun with your e and win the trade, it's a really annoying lane tbh.

VS

Jayce

Hard

He has the edge on you as he is really dominant versus meleechampions with only a single gapcloser. Max Q and after 6 you should outtrade him by just poking by attacking a minion twice and jumping to jayce with Q and proccing your ults passive autodamage onto him. Chip him off bit by bit. Take armor runes early as he will poke with autos.

VS

Karma

Hard

Irritating utility, poke, waveclear, kiting and snare. She will bully you in the lane so max Q and try to rush bork so you can bruteforce an all-in with the active slow. Try to get an early gank as she is really annoying to deal with.

VS

Kayle

Medium

She was recently nerfed very hard in her combat properties and shouldn't be such a threat as she was previously, just try to deny her by going aggressive early using your Q. Don't let her kite you, rushing blade of the ruined king will win you the game as it lets you take the upper hand in all ins.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Annoying, if you leap hell just run away and stun you after pokes. You could consider running exhaust versus his insanely strong all-in. Try to get mercs early and do your best not to get poked down low by the auto attack spam. If his escape is on cooldown and you have no stun stacks on you, it's an optimal time to trade.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

His 1v1 potential was nerfed heavily recently and that's why he isn't such a menace anymore in the toplane. If you can get close without using your q, it helps you trade immensely as you can follow him when he tries to escape with his e by using your q. Remember to stay close to minions to reduce his q damage.

VS

Lee Sin

Easy

Avoid his Q and this lane will be easy as his E no longer reduces attackspeed. After level 6 I emphasize, do not get hit by his Q if you're low because q-r-q will deal insane amounts of damage. He will sustain pretty hard through his w, so trade accordingly. If he doesn't snowball off you he will lose and HARD after 6. Hug minions so his Q wont be effective.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

Be aggressive early, try to stun him with e as she snares you so she can't disengage the trade instantly. Max Q and just try to stay near her when trading so that she cant kite you.

VS

Lulu

Hard

She is really annoying to deal with in the toplane as she has hard cc and tons of slows with really irritating poke. After level 6 you should be really careful as she has really good all-ins when you cant stick onto her thanks to her ultimates aoe slow. BORK is good so you can stick onto her in all-ins.

VS

Malphite

Hard

His E is the strongest spell in the game versus Jax when dueling him. When your attack speed has been reduced to insanely low amounts you'll find that the animation gets VERY stiff and choppy. Malphite can basically walk out of your autoattack range before you can finish the animation which results in the autoattack being cancelled. You can't really trade versus him if the E lands on you and he has very easy time setting up ganks with his ultimate and q. If your attack speed has been slowed, dont stick around to autoattack him as he will outdamage you with his w. Hextech Gunblade/Guinsoo are good buys when playing versus him so that he can't just stack armor.

VS

Maokai

Medium

This is a pretty hard lane for you pre-6 but after 6 you should always aim for the extended all-in trade as you have sustained hard damage output while he has none when his spells are on cooldown. Don't get poked by his q early and try to ward a lot as maokai has really easy time setting up ganks. BORK is a great item against him.

VS

Mordekaiser

Easy

Fight him a lot early, since he's very farm dependant. Harass, harass. If he pushes early and you're not confident with fighting him you can call your jungler to gank. If he wards, get a vision ward to counter it.

VS

Nasus

Hard

Wither is insanely broken and you won't be able to 1v1 him after he caps 40% cdr. However, you can abuse his earlygame by trying to trade everytime your e is up. Try to harass him to low HP and then call your jungler for a gank/countergank.

VS

Nidalee

Hard

AD Nidalee is hideously broken at the moment, his Q deals insane damage throughout the game and you cant dodge it with e. He is very mobile as well which makes it easy for her to disengage a trade where you jump at her with e on. If she uses her pounce and you're lvl 6+ then feel free to go all in as you can kill her really fast when she has no escape.

VS

Nunu

Hard

He actually counters you, but you'll outscale him hard late. Just try to buy early sustain to not get driven out of lane by that iceball spam, get a jungler there asap because you're on a really low kill potential this lane. You can't drive him out of lane but he can drive you out.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Don't get chipped bit-by-bit through his true damage poke and try to avoid getting hit by the axes. He has great sustain, he will heal the damage you deal through trades early so try to judge carefully when you go in.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Really annoying lane until about level 13, he will poke you permanently with q and you can't really trade back thanks to his w and passive. Try to get jungler to gank early as panth has no reliable escapes.

VS

Poppy

Medium

The reworked poppy can be annoying to deal with. Don't let her get her burst off on you by letting her stunning you on a wall and don't try to use q if he has the dash interrupt thingy on. Try to dodge his ult when he starts channeling it and don't underestimate her.

VS

Quinn

Hard

The bane of melee champions with only one gapcloser.. Just farm until level 6 and try to go all in as often as possible after hitting it. If she uses e and you have q up, feel free to trade because you'll come out on the top with her having no gapcreator. One of the most annoying lanes if your opponent knows what he's doing.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Renekton is really dominant in lane but if you play it correctly you can win this lane and even snowball over him. Just try to farm to your best potential, do not get cheesed level 2 through fury W-Q. You can dodge his W now with your e if you time it correctly. Be very careful when he has 100 fury as he can burst you for a hefty amount very quickly. Don't hang around turret if you are low as he will dive you.

VS

Rengar

Easy

He relies too much on autoattacking which make your lane very easy. Just be careful early of his deceptive burst and his triple-Q when he ults. If you manage to stay safe from those, you should have a really easy lane because E will win almost every trade. After 6 try going all in as much as you can because your damage output is greater than his. You should ward every entrance to your lane so you can see when he is moving out of lane to gank another lane.

VS

Riven

Medium

She has insane mobility, be careful early. Don't lose too many trades early and you shouldn't have a hard lane. At level 6 make sure not to stay around with low hp, as she will burst you for more damage the lower you are. She's really weak when shes on cooldowns, abuse that.

VS

Rumble

Hard

You generally shouldn't want to play a melee ranged champ against him. Try to move irrationally to dodge the harpoons and the slow it brings. And try not to squish in narrow places so that his ult can't pin you down hard. Get some sustain, mercs and farm up.

VS

Ryze

Hard

Permasnare makes him an excellent duelist after level 9 which makes it very hard for melee champions (such as Jax) to duel him. Try to get early mercs and try to get your jungler to gank early to get you snowballing. Pay attention to his passive stacks, if you jump in at the wrong time it's going to be fatal.

VS

Shen

Medium

BOTRK. He has good potential if his jungler comes around because of the taunt. Also hard to gank because it works as an escape too, but generally he shouldn't be able to kill you. Shen doesn't snowball hard and even if you're behind you should be able to lane without being bullied hard.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

She is insanely slippery and mobile, be careful early because she is a potent duelist just like you are. When you hit level 6, you should be able to trade her in bits without going all in though. Do only go all-in when she is low and you are sure you can take her out.

VS

Singed

Medium

Not really that strong in season 4, try to abuse his weak earlygame and try to coordinate a gank with your jungler to shut him down. BORK is good. Do not stay around if you are low and he has ignite+fling up.

VS

Tahm Kench

Medium

Very annoying to lane against, try to get some early magicresist and don't let him disengage you after spitting you out. You should try to go all in after level 6, you have consistent damage while he only has the w burst.

VS

Talon

Easy

All you need to do is survive his burst and get a vision ward. Very weak on cooldowns and open combat.

VS

Teemo

Medium

Very weak early, abuse that. Try to kill him before 6 and don't get baited to shrooms, vision ward the entrance to your lane perhaps.

VS

Trundle

Medium

Try to trade only when your e is up if you're not ahead of him, he has so much damage even while building tanky and his ult is a real 1v1 terror. Have a ward in your inventory always so you can escape the pillar by placing a ward behind it and jumping over, you generally don't want to feed the new trundle because he becomes a raidboss.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Only use your e if you have q up as tryndamere will just disengage the trade with his own e leaving you with cooldowns and a lost trade. Don't get cheesed pre-6 by his RNG crits and always be careful to not get poked when lasthitting minions as crits are insanely strong during the first 3 levels. Really snowbally so try not to die!

VS

Udyr

Medium

He's really strong at 1v1 and has a natural sustain in his kit, so you should be cautious about all-ins that you can't kill him in. He'll just heal back what you did and you'll be the underdog. You'll outshine him hard though, make it through the lanephase and you'll hopefully be more useful.

VS

Vayne

Hard

A hardcounter really. She can e you away and kite you with q while disrupting your focus with her ult stealth. You'll need to rush bork to stay on her, max Q obviously as she's very slippery. Try not to get poked or cheesed and ask for your jungler to help early. Always use e to its full potential, deals some good damage pre-6 when you've tanked minion autos to ramp the damage up.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

Get sustain, his pool will make it hard for you to kill him. Try getting your jungler there early and don't try to dive him unless really confident you'll make it away.

VS

Warwick

Easy

He can't all in fight you, you're stronger at dueling. If you have your E up when he ults you, you won't take any damage and the E stun will break the suppression. Get some sustain so he cant chip you out bit-by-bit with his Q.

VS

Wukong

Medium

He doesn't make hard use of autoattacks as his kit gives him damage through skills, he's like a mix of ad caster and a bruiser. Get some tabi early, try to trade only when you can follow up because his poke is really annoying. Back down at level 2 because he has one of the highest bursts in the game.

VS

Xin Zhao

Easy

Dodge when he tries to trade, hit him couple times and use w+q on him for the damage then back out. You're stronger at 1v1.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Before 6 you will most probably get outtraded because of his slipperiness and easymode Q spam. However after 6 you should be able to start outtrading him, I prefer rushing BORK so that when I go all in with him I can stick to him with the passive. Don't fight if he has a lot of minions around because he will jump around using them.

VS

Yorick

Medium

This lane is anti-fun. Survive the lanephase and outscale Yorick I'd say, it's a really hard lane to have and if you don't start snowballing early you probably won't get a chance to kill him during lanephase.

VS

Zac

Hard

Has a really strong sustain and he can just build tanky while dishing out tons of damage. He can trade pretty well by slowing you down and just using his w on you while you farm and his level 6 is really deceptive even without ap. Be cautious early and try to step on his blobs when he spams his skills as it provides sustain to him.

VS

Zed

Medium

If he uses shadow offensively, punish him for it by leaping to him. He is very weak toe-to-toe combat and early overall. At level 6 be careful of his burst, its deceptively strong. But like many other champs, survive his burst and then end him.

LANING and Gamephases Back to Top

Early Game

Jax is a machine if played correctly, but he won't be relevant if shut down correctly. In lane early you should take a path on how you're going to approach the game: are you against a hardcounter such as Renekton or Malphite? Or are you against a favourable matchup such as Riven or Fiora? A good player with a counterpick will make you have a hard time, but you can survive the lane if you play your cards correctly: Jax loves when you initiate a trade. A renekton who blows his gapcloser to engage locks himself on a Jax who uses his counter-strike and starts trading back. A Malphite who harasses you permanently can be outsustained through lifesteal and hp regen, as he will run out of mana. That's when you become the bully against him.

But all-in-all, Jax has a decent early game, as he is hard to kill through his e and q as an escape. If you have a hard time, just make it through the early game by farming and staying alive. Remember that you can buy defensive early if you struggle, Doran's Shield is a great item, you can even rush a negatron cloak or a Warden's mail if you want to be more farm-oriented.

About itemizing early game, you should either start with a Cloth armor and 5x health pots or Doran's shield and a health potion as I suggested. You should try to miss as few lasthits as possible, so that you can maximize the efficiency of your first backing. When you do go back for the first time, depending on the amount of gold that you have, you should buy a Doran's Blade. If you have more, you could buy 1st tier boots. Never forget to buy a ward. Jax is really vulnerable to cc and ganking, and it's easy to throw a lane by not warding. If you do back with 1300-1500 gold, then I suggest you buy a Bilgewater Cutlass straight. If you have about 1300, then just go Vampiric Scepter and a Doran's blade.

Early game you should target to have atleast these items: Doran's Blade, Vampiric Scepter, some wards, 1st tier boots. If you're against a physical damage dealing lane, then you could also have a Doran's Shield, cloth armor or Chain Vest if you're struggling. Against a magical damage dealing lane, you should try to get an early Null-Magic Mantle or Negatron Cloak.

You will be finishing the Vampiric scepter into a Bilgewater Cutlass which you later finish into a Blade of the Ruined King or a Hextech Gunblade. After you have finished your first core item you'll want to determine what to build next and it will either be:

3078_32.png Not behind? Are you actually ahead? Build this item.
3143_32.png Struggling against a physical damage dealing lane? Rush this second.
3065_32.png Having a hard time against magical damage dealing lane? This item is great.

------------------------------------------------------------
Mid Game
------------------------------------------------------------

This is when your power starts to grow, as you hopefully have your Blade of the Ruined King. It will give you great amounts of sustain and trading potential, as well as the power to assassinate a squishy with the power it gives you. Don't be afraid to push your lane and roam if the enemy doesn't allow you to push the turret. But if your lane opponent chooses to roam, then you should push the turret down. You should generally keep your eyes open at this point to see if there are skirmishes happening near you, as blade of the ruined king makes you powerful. You should try your luck in a 1v1 against your lane-opponent at this point if you aren't behind, as Jax is a really powerful duelist. You can also start splitpushing if you notice your lane being empty often. If a squishy carry tries to defend alone, you can attempt diving them as you are really strong with items available.

At this point you are either itemizing to fit your offensive or defensive needs, as I suggested in the previous chapter. If you do go for Trinity Force, then you should usually build a Phage into a Sheen followed by the recipe as this build path is the most benefitting in terms of stats. [imgsmall=items/trinity-force.png] is great for splitpushing and if you're focusing on that, you should build it. Spirit Visage is great for sustaining and being able to fight with magic damage dealers and not being assassinated by AP carries while Randuin's Omen is great for defending and teamfighting.

But like I mentioned, your midgame should consist of mobile movement around the map creating pressure. Splitpushing or ganking other lanes, it doesn't matter, as your power is greatly increased from since you laned. Make sure to let your team know of your orientation so they can capitalize on the impact of it.

------------------------------------------------------------
Late Game
------------------------------------------------------------

This is when you reach your godlike status. You will deal immense damage while being tanky as hell. You should be almost full build, 4 or 5 items atleast. You can start forcing fights, as you are a power to be reckoned with, and if your opponents ignore your presence, you will wreak havoc during a teamfight. Good luck.

You can channel your presence in other ways, as well. You can splitpush, like you I mentioned before. You will destroy turrets REALLY, really fast. If your team does get engaged upon 4v5, you can still probably take advantage of this by going all-out push mode. This will guarantee the attention of the enemy team, as if you are let alone, you will push down the inhibitor, possibly a nexus turret. Jax has a great passive to splitpush, and if you have built as I have advised, you will also have the constant trinity-sheen procs and some nice attack speed.

Just please do make sure your team takes advantage of the enemy teams disorientation when you splitpush, tell them to force objectives or push another lane. Do not be afraid if your enemy teams squishy carries come to defend as they are easy prey for you. Dive them if you are confident you won't be ganked or you see the rest of their team sieging your other lanes. However, don't be overconfident and try to dive a Malphite or a Shen, as the turret will deal insane damage to you as you stay under it.

Neat Jax tricks Back to Top

Here are some neat tricks you can do with Jax

○Always carry a 2044_32.png, you can escape using it by planting it and using your Q on it.

○Activate E before you jump and activate it again to stun them as you land, but be careful that this way you won't have it up if you're fighting someone like an ad carry who deals a lot of damage with autoattacks.

○After you've hit level 6, hit a creep twice and then leap to your opponent and land an auto attack for leap strike damage + your ultimates proc.

○Always reset your autoattack timer with w by attacking and just when the animation is finished activate w.

○You can jump to anything, minions, jarvan flag, thresh lamp etc. Same goes for teleport, if you choose to run it on Jax.

○Always activate your ultimate when a teamfight erupts, this will make a huge difference if you've bought something like bork/trinity because it scales from your ad/ap.

○If you're escaping, try activating your E on and turning around to make sure that they get stunned and then proceed running for some distance.

○Use BOTRK if they have a dash to keep up with them if you can't stun them.

○HP is really great on Jax. His ult synergizes so well with it while having one of the highest base HPs of the game.
