Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png The best spell in the game.  Used for gap closing, getting away, and making plays. Always take this spell.

12.png A must in top lane. Mid lane take other spells, but going top without this will hinder your map control at all stages of the game

14.png Excellent for that last little burst and killing enemies with true damage. Take if you don't need defensive spells.

1.png Good against stun heavy CC teams or laners with stuns (Ashe, Sejuani, Ahri, Twisted Fate, etc).

3.png Take against mid laners who have strong burst potential, or against enemies who you don't have confidence facing.

6.png Mobility and chase. Great on Jayce with your gate and transform movement speed bonuses.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
21.png Exhaust is probably better if you want to take this.
Masteries Back to Top
Keystone:
Thunderlords if you want more burst (helpful at early stages of the game)
Stormraiders if you want to be able to get a huge speed burst after landing a Q on any enemy squishy.
STORMRADERS WILL BE TAKEN PROBABLY 80% OF GAMES AGAINST TEAMS. If the enemy team has 3 tanks (top / jg / sup) I would probably take Thunderlords.
Attack Speed helps more in laning than % damage, I think it's better at bullying opponents as well.
Fresh blood is great on Jayce since you are a lane bully. This extra damage on your auto attacks every few seconds helps with lane poke.
2% damage > biscuits.
Greenfathers Gift is a good mastery that I would consider on Top Jayce if against a melee tank. I think I prefer dangerous game in other situations though.
Other than that, just take offensive masteries here, you're looking to maximize your damage output.
lolking Skillorder is broken for Jayce is broken, here's what it should look like.
ioJJFYw.png
Q gives the most damage. Max it first.
W in cannon form is superior to maxing thundering blow and gate since the cooldown on the W decreases and the damage increases.
E is last because the gate cooldown does NOT decrease when putting points into it, so it is not worth doing.
Take Another Point in Q at Level 3 Instead of W!
Level 1 Q does pretty much no damage at all, and level your W at level 3 won't do much for you either. This being said, putting another point in your Q at level 3 will allow you to poke earlier and with more damage.
A Short Look At Jayce's Abilities
First let's have a look at his two stances...
Hammer Form [R] Cannon Form
Jayce has two abilities sets with their own unique skills. They both have their uses functions during laning, and during teamfights. Laning phase should primarily consist of Cannon Form to farm, since it's easier to farm with range than at melee distance, ignoring Hammer Form unless you need to engage on your enemy or regain mana from your W passive. Teamfights also usually consists of damage from Cannon form abilities, using Hammer Form to slow or knock back potential threats to you.
To the skies!  [Q] Shock Blast
To the Skies!/Shock Blast - Jayce's main damage. Max them first. To the Skies is exceptionally good at gap closing short distances and deal a ton of damage to your target. Shock blast my favorite skill of Jayce. Pair it with an acceleration gate and the range and damage is increased. Pretty good.
Lightning Field [W] Hyper Charge
Lightning field/Hyper Charge - Lightning field deals some extra damage to minion waves when you are clearing them. The passive is decent, restoring some mana on hit, but it isn't something that you should max first. Hyper Charge is what makes Jayce scale a shit ton. Level 5 hyper charge makes your basic attacks deal 130% damage, with 2.5 attack speed! Maxing this second ensures your late game damage with a muramana.
Thundering Blow [E] Acceleration Gate
Thundering Blow/Acceleration Gate - Thundering Blow is great for damage against tanks, as it deals percent damage to their health. This is also great for escaping saucy situations when you're getting ganked. Acceleration Gate's main purpose is to be used with your Shock Blast. It increases the damage, range, and radius of the explosion. It is also great for getting teammates out of situations if they are being chased. Maxing this third is good because the cooldown on gate is always 16 seconds now, so there is no reason for you to be maxing it second or first.
SCROLL DOWN FOR ALTERNATIVE BUILDS (For No Tear / Tank)!
This build is for damage oriented Jayce with TEAR!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What's so great about this build?

  1. Versatility. There's a counter to every situation which is what makes Jayce a great champion.
  2. Cost efficiency. This build gets the items you need fast.

3142.png Why Ghostblade Before Manamune? 3142.png

  1. Easier build path. Serrated Dirk is an incredible item to buy after tear because of the armor pen and the AD buff after killing a unit. The CDR from Warhammer is also great early game as well.
  2. Better early game stats. Instead of hindering yourself with manamune early that becomes a late game item, why not get ahead early then build your key component? You're still going to buy it, but the stats you get early aren't worth it compared to buying it later.
  3. This item has everything Jayce needs. Armor Pen, AD, CDR, and mobility - all built into one item.

3004_32.png Why Manamune / Muramana? 3042_32.png

  1. Jayce is a high mana cost champion. This being said, you should find a way to add more mana to him without getting rid of his damage. The solution? Muramana
  2. Muramana gives you ridiculous damage late game, while making you not run out of mana. It's nice.
  3. It outclasses Trinity Force. Trinity force has a 2 second cooldown, which will add that damage only once every 2 seconds, implying you can cast another skill in that time. Muramana, on the other hand, has no cooldown.

When should I have my Muramana by?

Try to get your Muramana out by 30ish minutes.

Stacking Stacks More Quickly

When going back to lane, spam Hyper Charge, Lightning Field, and Acceleration gate. These are Jayce's least mana costly spells and the low mana cost will be fastly regenerated once you hit your lane since you have a tear. If you get blue from your Jungler, make sure to spam your Accelerated Shock Blast into the enemies' face. You will regen it back quickly.

3508.png What About Essence Reaver? 3508.png

I've been experimenting with Essence Reaver throughout Preseason 6 and I've found that I don't really like it at all. The critical strike you gain from it isn't really worth buying it, and the cost of it is 400 more gold than Yommous, which gives you the same amount of AD, but with armor pen. The critical strike passive of this item also isn't really worth taking since it'll take you above 40% if you buy Ionian Boots. Maybe one day I'll look into this item, but I don't really think it fits my play style or how I build.

Item Explanations

3070_64.png  Ingredients for victory  3070_64.png
  1. Tear always on your first back. You need this for late game poking and muramana. Must buy every game.
  2. GIves you mana and mana regeration. Get stacks that give you more mana on it by using abilities that cost mana.

3142.png The Power Spike 3142.png

  1. Combined with the Armor Pen of Black Cleaver / LW, your Q will hit hard
  2. Gives you mobility with the active AND out of combad MS
  3. Gives you the last 10% CDR you need to get 40%
  4. Also gives you AD and Lethality for a relatively cheap price

3004_64.png  No Mana Problems  3004_64.png

  1. Gives you even more mana than tear.
  2. Also gives you damage.
  3. Get stacks that give you more mana on it by using abilities that cost mana OR by using basic attacks.

3071_64.png  The Armor Shredder  3071_64.png

  1. This item has almost everything you need in 1 item. Health, armor pen, AD, and CD.
  2. The armor pen works well with your Hyper Charge since you can get 3/6 stacks of the shred on in a little more than a second
  3. Since pretty much every team you're going to face is going to have a tank (who has armor), getting this with Last Whisper variants will help you deal with that.
  4. Even if you're not against tanks, this item is good against a squishy team because of the stats and utility you gain with it.

3033.png  The Armor Melters  3036.png

  1. Will allow you to damage people who have armor with more ease.
  2. Dominik's if you're against a tanky team or a team without many heals.
  3. Mortal Reminder if you're against a  team with a Soraka or lots of heals.

FInal Item Choices

3147.png  The Killing Sword  3147.png
  1. Attack damage, Lethality, Movement Speed. The essentials.
  2. Absolutely devastating at all stages of the game, I buy this if snowballing and don't need extra sustain.

3072_64.png  Sustain Guy 3072_64.png

  1. Increase your damage by a lot.
  2. Gain lots of lifesteal and sustain.
  3. Also get a nice shield.
  4. Good all around as a last item, definetly good if you like to poke a lot.

3156.png The Magic Defense Sword  3156.png

  1. I could not think of a creative name for this item
  2. I don't like building this right after buying Hexdrinker since I prefer that movement speed of Ghostblade.
  3. AD, Lethality, Magic Resist, Magic Shield. Standard stuff
  4. Great item vs an AP laner. Great in any time of the game because of the shield you get.
  5. Get this as a last item if you were top and their fed AP mid laner is killing you.

3814.png  The Magic Defense Sword v2  3814.png

  1. I still could not think of a creative name for this item.
  2. Gives you a spell shield like Sivr's or Nocturnes along with MR, AD, and Lethality.
  3. Still pretty great after the nerf

3026_64.png  AD Defensive Guy  3026_64.png

  1. Good if you're getting killed a shit ton and can't do anything about it by Zed or Talon or something
  2. No armor pen kinda sucks, but the AD / Armor on one item is pretty good

3078_64.png  Kiting Guy  3078_64.png

  1. Decent with Essence Reaver.
  2. Black Cleaver nullifies the movement bonus, so that's a wasted stat.
  3. Decent as a last item, but not the best.

3031_64.png  Damage Guy  3031_64.png

  1. Deal lots of damage.
  2. LOTS  OF DAMAGE.
  3. But bloodthirster or other stuff is better.

3026.png  DEFENSIVE LAST ITEMS  3143.png

  1. Self Explanatory, buy the resistances you need!
  2. Randuins = Need Armor / HP
  3. GA = Getting bursted fast, need a revive
  4. Banshees = getting poked by something hard, need a spell shield

VS

Ahri

Medium
Summoner Spells: 3.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
With Ahri's recent changes she's much harder than she used to be to deal with. Her Q speed buff makes it very hard for you to land a Q since she's moving at hyper speed. Another factor is her annoying charm which makes it hard to farm without pressure early. Keep behind minions and keep out of range for her abilities, since she can all in you very easily.

VS

Akali

Medium
Summoner Spells: 3.png4.png / 14.png4.png (Offensive)
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Akali is a bitch in the ass to deal with. Her gapclosers (6+), invisibility, and sustain (spell vamp) are all very hard to deal with as a Jayce. The gap closers are ridiculous because you have one knockback, which won't do much since she can charge at you another two times after her first shadow dash. The invisibility makes melee duels hard because your two damaging abilities in hammer form both must be targeted on a player/minion, and the sustain is just self explanitory. Although she's difficult to deal with as Jayce, her consistant nerfs made her damage next to none. She won't be able to snowball as hard as she used to, and is much easier to shut down.

VS

Annie

Hard
Summoner spells: 1.png4.png
Fuck. Annie. This bitch is possibly the hardest matchup against Jayce. She outranges you with her Q, and is able to spam that shit every 5 seconds dealing more than 100 damage level 1 with it. Ask your jungler to camp you or something so you don't feed and die a lot.

VS

Azir

Medium
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Azir is very squishy, which makes it easy for you to poke him down and deal damage to him. However, he deals lots of poke back to you, which (for the most part) is out of your auto attack range, which sucks. So in all, you both deal damage to each other, skill matchup

VS

Brand

Medium
Summoner Spells: 1.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
A Brand lane will be decided on who hits their skillshots more. If Brand is able to land a full combo on you without cleanse, you're good for dead. However, since he's a mage and probably won't build very defensively, you'll be able to poke him lots as well since he has no mobility abilities.

VS

Camille

Medium

Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)

Camille is easy to bully, but hard to win a full trade with. You can easily auto attack her out of lane and keep your distance from her with Thundering Blow, but allowing her to land her abilities on you in succession is how you will lose. Getting pounced on with her camillee.png is incredibly hard to retaliate from unless you time your Thundering Blow properly (which is to keep it up almost all times in the case that she DOES engage on you with camillee.png). Bully her out and keep in mind your Thundering Blow cooldown.

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard
Summoner Spells: 1.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Very hard matchup. In lane, Cass is able to out poke and outrange you. You have to stay back while farming, which isn't what Jayce is meant to do (bully lane opponent). Next, Cassiopeia actually is one of the few champs that can out scale Jayce in late-late game. Her retarded fang spam on you will drop you fast and you don't really have any room to run, so you have to fight her. Basically, try and get your damage on her first before she gets to you, since she takes some time to wind up and deal damage.

VS

Darius

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Situational items to consider: 3123.png (Darius' Q heal is insanely stupid)
Simple matchup for Jayce to win, or if you screw up everything can go south. Only two things you need to worry about: Stormraider's Surge after being hit on the outer edge of dariuscleave.png, and Darius' pull (dariusaxegrabcone.png). His pull is easily avoidable since your auto attack range is out of his pull range. Auto attacking and poke is how you will win this matchup, all in if you think you have the right amount of damage to kill him.

VS

Diana

Easy
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png

Pretty easy early on since Diana isn't able to jump on you until level 6. Just keep auto attacking her and keep away from her when she activates her shield and you should be able to win easily. If she does jump on you, E her away and use your gate to run from her high burst.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (to actually kill this guy)
Please buy this early against Mundo: 3123.png
Not so much hard, but annoying. Mundo will poke you with his cleaver forever, then regen all his health back once he hits 6. Not hard to win lane, just keep clear of his Cleavers.

VS

Ekko

Medium
Summoner Spells:  1.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive) / 12.png4.png (if top)
Easier than previously thought. Jayce can bully ekko easilly since he's a melee champ and his Q is easilly dodge-able since you have 2 movement speed buffs (R, E). However, getting caught in a Q can mean death to you since you're just as squishy as he is. Keep behind minions and you should be safe and win.

VS

Fiora

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (win duels)
Interesting opponent for Jayce. She's able to lunge at you with her Q, but you're able to smack her back with your E. However, she's able to parry you with her Riposte ability. She's also able to parry your Shock Blast. This matchup takes timing, waiting for her to waste her lunge on a minion, or her riposte on something similar. Engage on her when you know you have the ability upper hand, and avoid using thundering blow when she has her Riposte up (you'll get stunned!).

VS

Fizz

Medium
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png (confident) / 3.png4.png (defensive)
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Somewhat difficult matchup. You are able to poke him down, but if Fizz catches you out of position or you have low health and made the mistake of staying near him, you can't really outtrade him. Just be mindful of your positioning and you should be able to win.

VS

Gangplank

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
A few things to watch for here. Be wary of his poke with Q, since the damage can add up over time. For his barrels, you are able to destroy them quickly with hyper charge, but if he manages to blow on up on you, you'll be taking lots of damage. Third. don't get baited by his heal, since he can heal and remove your jayceQ.png slow with it.

VS

Gnar

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Trinity Force/Brutalizer Build
Not that bad quite honestly. You can out damage him if you can dodge his stupid Q and ridiculous slow. You can also poke him easier since he's not going to be indestructible and unkillable. Although annoying, this is more winnable than if he build full tank.

Full tank build
Fuck this piece of shit champion. he builds tank --> deals shit tons of damage. Small form? Infinite Q poke and retarded slows. you can't get in range of him to poke with auto attacks since he'll just slow you to to hell and burst his stupid W bonus damage. ask for ganks and hell, ask to be campd to deal with this piece of shit meme champion.

VS

Hecarim

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Hecarim is now in the top lane and is a pretty equal matchup for Jayce. He can all in you, and you can poke him down since he's melee. You also have outplay opportunities to dodge his ult or knock him back before he rams into you with his charge. Deny him farm and stay safe away from him early and you should be able to win.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)

The Illaoi match up will come down to who positions better and who lands skillshots. Her illaoiE.png will absolutely cripple you if landed because of how squishy you're going to end up building. Stay in ranged form as long as you can when farming, switching only to hammer when needed. Her all in with her ult is easily counter by your jayceE.png since you can disengage from it with ease. Keep behind creeps and be sure to not get grabbed by her.

VS

Irelia

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Painful matchup. Irelia is able to sustain your poke and has hard CC on you if you do continue to poke her, since she can stun you if her health is lower than yours. If Irelia stuns you, she will go to town on you, dealing true damage with her auto attacks and melting you. Keep well away from her when you know she has it up, and farm with your cannon.

VS

Jax

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Hard matchup if the enemy Jax knows what he's doing. However, if you know what you're doing, you should win easily. Poke him down with auto attacks while he attempts to farm. Knock him back when he jumps to you before he can stun you. Kite and you should easily win.

VS

Kassadin

Easy
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Kassadin is the solution to AP champions, which Jayce is the opposite of. He is an AD hyper carry which will absolutely destroy kassadin at all stages of the game, unless he has stacked shit tons of armor and is fed. Abuse him as much as you can while farming.

VS

Katarina

Easy
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png(confident) / 3.png4.png(anti teamfight)
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
A good Jayce will try to deny Kat of her farm. Just keep in front of you wave and she will not be able to get a single creep. When she ulties you, just use your thundering blow quickly to stop her channeling.

VS

Kayle

Medium
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png / 3.png4.png (defensive)
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Before Kayle's nerfs she used to a real ass to deal with. Now that her ratios and cooldowns are reduced, she's a bit easier to lane against. The main thing you need to be wary of is her Q. Once the Q hits and you know she has the potential to damage you, you can either flash away, or all in her, so make up your mind and choose one or the other. Just make sure you don't waste everything while she has her ultimate up!

VS

Kennen

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
I see Kennen as a 100% skill matchup. Though he outranges you with all his abilities (besides Accelerated Shockblast) you're able to easily all in him levels 1-5. You need to be proactive early or you WILL get all in'd by him after he gets his ultimate. Other things to be mindful of:

-Stay behind creeps, his kennenshurikenhurlmissile1.png / kennenbringthelight.png chunks your health. Poke him when he mispositions.
-Wait to use your Accelerated Shockblast until he wastes his kennenlightningrush.png, he's hard to land a shot on due to his small hitbox and speed

VS

Kha'Zix

Easy
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png (confident) / 3.png4.png (safe)
Dealing with KhaZix is easier than you think. Just stand near your minions. He isn't able to get his isolated Q off on you, and you are still able to poke him down with auto attacks. If you want to get ballsy, you can jump on him with your Hammer Q. Pretty easy stuff.

VS

Kled

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
This matchup relies on how well the enemy Kled knows how to play. Kled's kledE.png is insanely good against Jayce because of it having two charges, and Jayce only having one knockback (jayceE.png). You need to position yourself in a safe spot at all times to make sure you won't get charged and all in'd early. Something else to make note of is kled landing his kledQ.png, since it will absolutely devastate you if you're pulled, though you can Knock him back with your jayceE.png as well.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard
Summoner Spells: 3.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Very hard to deal with, especially if the LeBlanc knows what she's doing. She can take 200 off your health with a Q W combo, then you're zoned out for the next minute trying to recover your health. Stay away from her W range, and farm safely in the back of your wave and you should be able to get through laning.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Ah yes, Lee Sin top. The meme of solo queue. Easy matchup for Jayce IF you can position yourself correctly. The main way you will die to Lee Sin is if he lands a Q on you and all ins you before you can deal damage back to him. Stay in between your minions and beware his E and Q. Past level 6 if he is able to land a full combo on you it'd be hard to react to him.

VS

Lissandra

Medium
Summoner Spells:  1.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Lissandra: AKA the whore of top lane (besides Riven). So, why is Lissandra so hard to face? Well, for one, her Q rance outranges Jayces auto attack range, and it's a very spammable spell, allowing her to poke you more than you can poke her. This causes for some very hard farming top lane. Another annoyance is her amount of CC. Her ult will make you die instatnly in a teamfight since you probably aren't building much defense as Jayce. To win this matchup, you will need a defensive item such as GA, Banshees, or Quicksilver sash. Merc treds are also a must.

VS

Lulu

Medium
Summoner Spells: 1.png4.png(poly counter) / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Dealing with Lulu is all about knowing how to not get baited by her abilities. If you see her under tower with 200 HP and dive her, she will ult herself for 250 HP level 6, then another 100 from her shield, getting you killed and her getting away. Know her cooldowns and mana, and you should win.

VS

Malphite

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (if you want to kill this braindead fuck)
The main problem I have with facing Malphite is that you are able to poke him down to half HP but his stupid shield will come up giving him 100+ HP every 10 seconds. This being said it's hard to all in him past 10 minutes as well because of how much armor he will be building. You probably won't kill him without a gank or unless he makes a major mistake early, so just try to deny him farm and focus on bullying him.

VS

Maokai

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Since maokai got nerfed a while back, he's much easier to deal with. You can poke him with auto attacks all you want until he goes up to snare you. Once you get snared, you can continue to deal damage to him, unless you're getting ganked. If you're getting ganked you're pretty much dead. In summary, poke the guy down and keep away from his snare range.

VS

Nasus

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png 14.png4.png (if you actually want to kill Nasus)
Shutting down Nasus early will help you deal with his crazy late game, but he will still hurt. The main thing you need to remember is your positioning. Once he withers you, you are pretty much done for unless you have good peel from your team. Remember, positioning is key!

VS

Nidalee

Easy
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Midalee is still sometimes a thing but it's pretty bad. If you let yourself die while facing Nid in this matchup it'll most likely be your fault for getting hit with one of her javelintoss.pngs behind minions. Know when to all in (when she has used her javelintoss.png on a minion or missed it) so you're able to land a full combo without being burst back.

VS

Orianna

Hard
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
I always have a hard time dealing with Orianna. The main reason I hate going against her is because she outranges you in pretty much every way besides your EQ. Be sure to stay away from her ball and autoattacks and farm to the best of your ability. The best way to win is either going all in around level 4 or 5, or having a jungler gank for you.

VS

Pantheon

Hard
Summoner Spells: 3.png4.png / 1.png4.png(anti stun)
This guy will fuck you up. His passive makes it very hard to poke him with auto attacks. Along with this, he can easily bully Jayce with Q's to deny him farm. To add on to this, once he hops on you with his W, there is little you can do to avoid the incoming damage you're about to take besides knock him back with thundering blow. Build 2 dorans blades and ask for ganks.

VS

Poppy

Hard
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png
Bullying Poppy is a hard thing to do. She will build tons of armor while having increased resistances while at low health. She also gets a shield that will abosorb around 150 daamge levels 1-6, which makes it even harder to kill her. On top of that, if you do manage to get a move on her she can stop your jayceQ.png with her poppyparagonofdemacia.png, making it hard to fight. Wait for jungle ganks and don't fight her since she will most likely come out on top.

VS

Renekton

Easy
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (easy lane)
Very easy matchup for Jayce. Make sure to use armor pen runes since Renekton will will surly run tanky. You need to be sure to be well out of his Slice n Dice range since he will try to E W Q E (Slice, Stun, Q, Dice) every chance he can get. Auto attack the shit out of him and you should win this matchup.

VS

Rengar

Medium

Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png /  3.png4.png (please stop killing me)

Assassin Update Rengar is hard to deal with. His kit is made for killing squishies, which is what you are. BUT, if you want to win you can play near the river side of top lane since he'll be pouncing on you 24/7 if you're being an idiot and staying near the top brushes. After 6, I really don't know what to say since you're going to have to pray that you won't get one shot by an experienced Rengar who knows how to combo his ult and abilities.

VS

Riven

Easy
Summoner Spells:3.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Close range, Riven will tear you a new asshole. However, as long as you stay in cannon form, poking her with auto attacks, you should be safe. If she charges at you, knock her back and kite while avoiding her abilities, and you should be able to kill her. A lot easier than it sounds, just don't play like an idiot.

VS

Rumble

Easy
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Rumble lanes usually are won early or they aren't won at all. You outrange him early on, save his rumblegrenade.png. You should be able to win early trades since he doesn't have the most prominent early game. Just keep back if you know he has enough heat to deal increased damage to you with his empowered abilities.

VS

Ryze

Hard
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 3.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Very hard matchup for Jayce. Ryze is able to outtrade you at all stages of the game. Things get even harder if Ryze knows what he's doing as well. Stay behind minions so he can't demolish you with his Q. Other than that you'll be farming under tower for the most part. Bring a spiritual book, a Hexdrinker, and a jungle gank or two to survive this lane, it'll be hard.

VS

Shen

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png (need teleport vs Shen)
The Shen matchup isn't the hardest in the world but it isn't the easiest either. His shenfeint.png makes it hard for you to all in him because of how it negates all auto attacks, making hyper charge completely worthless in a dual if he has it up. Keep track of that ability, along with his shenshadowdash.png range. Getting taunted by him will allow him to chunk you easily with his shenvorpalstar.png damage. Also taking teleport in this match up is critical because of his shenstandunited.png

VS

Shyvana

Easy
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Easy to deal with. You are able to poke Shyv and she can't do anything about it. If she tries to rush at you with ehr W, you can just use your Gate and Ultimate to run away, or just use your Hammer E to knock her back. Shyv has no gapclosers, besides her ult, and you can knock her ult back too.

VS

Singed

Easy
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Very simple matchup for Jayce. Keep out of his flip range while auto attacking him to death. However, if he ghosts and ults trying to flip you back there isn't much you can do if you're near his turret, since your knock back is the same range as his flip. Just keep away from him and you should be fine.

VS

Sion

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Somewhat hard matchup. You're able to abuse Sion while denying him farm, but since Sions will always build full tank with shit tons of armor, that just makes your job harder. This means you should be able to win lane by denying him farm, but not so much by killing him. This being said, if Sion all ins you you're pretty much fucked because you're a squishy champ, and Sion can 100-0 you if he lands his ult and a full Q. Be careful and try to deny him.

VS

Swain

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 1.png4.png(mid) / 21.png4.png(if you can dodge his snare)
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Skillshot and knowledge matchup. If you can stay out of Swain's snare then you're pretty safe. Once that locks you down, you're in trouble. When swain slows you with his bird try and gate and R away as fast as you can, since you will probably get hit with a barrage of crows and green acid soon after you get snared.

VS

Syndra

Hard
Summoner Spells: 1.png4.png / 3.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Syndra is a large counter Jayce. Her stun is extremely easy to hit and on a squishy target (you) landing her full combo can mean devastating results. The main thing to keep in mind when fighting Syndra is the position of her orbs already on the ground. Dodging her stun is how you will get an opportunity to kill her. Be mindful of this and you can win.

VS

Talon

Medium

Summoner Spells: 3.png4.png

Early game you should be able to stomp Talon because of you having the ranged advantage. However, after he gets his ultimate this matchup turns into 100% skill based. Whoever lands their full combo will win a 1v1. Also, be sure to not chase a Talon into jungle. There's no way you're catching him with his stupid taloncutthroat.png.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png
Tryndamere will absolutely destroy you at levels: 1-2 and 6+. Your window of oppertunity to kill him will be around levels 3-5, since he probably will not be as aggressive as Tryndameres normally are at level one. All in him then, or wait for a jungle gank to kill him.

VS

Twisted Fate

Medium
Summoner Spells: 1.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Skill matchup. Twisted Fate's auto attack range outranges yours, so he can stun you before you can even do damage to him. However, his cards are very easy to dodge since you have 2 speed steroids you can use to dodge them more easy. Lategame is a different story. If you don't have a Guardian Angel/Banshee's, you're guaranteed to die if twisted fate is full build and stuns you.

VS

Veigar

Medium
Summoner Spells: 1.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Veigar is an interesting champ to lane against. To defeat Veigar in a trade, you must stay in cannon form if you find yourself trapped in his stun circle. Using Q on Veigar while in melee and while trapped inside his stun circle can be your death since you'll just stun yourself. Stay in cannon form while trading, then switch once you know he doesn't have his stun up. Another pointer is to not underestimate his ult damage. Although his ult is good against AP targets, the scaling on it still makes it a large threat against you, an AD champ.

VS

Viktor

Hard
Summoner Spells: 1.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Pretty difficult matchup. Viktor is able to out damage you early, gets a shield and movement with his Q, and is able to stun you if you jump on him. However, when a jungler comes to gank him you should have no problem taking him down since he has no escape. Play safe and wait for ganks.

VS

Vladimir

Hard
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Playing against an experienced Vladamir player is a real pain in the ASS. Vladamir is a pain to deal with because Jayce is a primary lane bully champion who tries to poke then all in champions once they are low. Vlad stops this by infinitly healing himself with his Q, which has a longer range than your auto attack. Try to get a gank from your jungler or all in him if you think you have enough power and health to overwhelm him.

VS

Wukong

Medium
Summoner Spells: 12.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
The key to beating Wukong is to know when he uses his clone. Its incredibly frustrating jumping to him with you Q then wasting an auto and a Thundering Blow on his clone. Try to figure out which one is the real Wukong and you should win.

VS

Xerath

Medium
Summoner Spells: 1.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
A tricky matchup, but winnable. Xerath's abilities all take time to charge up and land, which is a good thing for Jayce. You have two movement speed buffs (Gate, Transform) which makes it very easy to juke Xerath's abilitiy aim on you. Another thing to mention is how easilly it is to all in him. Xerath is a very immobile champion, so jumping on him in cannon form is a very easy way to get some damage on him. However, be mindful of his stun if you get too close.

VS

Yasuo

Medium
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png
Yasuo isn't that hard to deal with as Jayce. Though he'll try to dodge your Shock Blast by using his Sweeping Blade in between minion waves, just aim in the center of the wave and predict where you think he'll dash for guaranteed damage. Also, play around his wind wall so your Shock Blast won't get nullified by it. If you're looking for guaranteed poke damage on him try: Hyper Charge --> Transform --> To The Skies! --> 3 Autos, that way you don't have to worry about missing Q to his wind wall.

VS

Zed

Medium
Summoner Spells: 3.png4.png / 14.png4.png (offensive)
Zed is a tricky matchup. You are able to outlane him by CSing in ranged form and auto attacking him, but he is able to all in you harder than you're able to all in him. You should be pretty safe levels 1-3, but once he hits level 4 you need to start playing more cautiously. Take barrier against zed.

VS

Ziggs

Medium
Summoner Spells: 14.png4.png
Circumstantial items to consider: 3155.png
Skillshot matchup. Whoever lands more poke will end up winning the lane. Good thing for you that Jayce has mobility abilities, which makes it easier to actually dodge his bombs. Keep mobile and you should win.

Even after 7.3 nerfs Jayce is still being picked and banned constantly in competitive play, and is still an amazing solo queue pick. While not the best that he previously was, he's still amazing in solo queue and competitive.

Standard AD should work here.

Why Tank Jayce?

I really don't know. This build is subpar compared to damage oriented Jayce. Play it if you feel like trying out something new, or want to experiment around.

Skill Order

Q --> E --> W
Q is always first.
E is second since you're going to be getting up in everyone's faces in this build, prioritizing kiting instead burst
W is last.

The Playstyle

Tank Jayce plays very differently from damage oriented Jayce. In this build you'll be getting huge CDR items such as Iceborn and Visage. This will allow you to spam your Hammer Q and E while staying alive and in the midst of the battle. Soak up damage while providing peel for your carries with hammer form. Laning should be standard.

Is it viable?

Top lane it is somewhat viable. Don't expect to carry Plat+ games with this. Also, don't play this mid lane (go standard build [or tearless] mid lane!)

Tearless Build Back to Top

SUMMONER SPELLS - Same as tear build

Masteries / Runes

RxxRh3J.png

Basically the same as Tear Jayce, only with 5 points in Meditation.

Why Tearless Jayce?

Buying tear on Jayce is a risk since you're putting yourself behind early. You have to stack that thing to 750 along with buying manamune over buying either a Black Cleaver earlier or a Ghostblade earlier. Not doing this limits your mana pool but gives you MUCH more damage. You take a risk either way, do what you think is right for the game you're playing.

Skill Order

Q --> W--> E
Q is always first.
Damage --> Damage --> Have to max E last. Standard skill order.

The Playstyle

This is more of a burst heavy build compared to the poke heavy build with tear. You will still be able to do poke damage with your Shockblast, but since your mana pool is limited you won't be doing it for long. Be mindful of it and you'll be able to win and do tons of damage.

Is it viable?

Yes.

Complete offense, only go this path if you know how to position and not get caught out like an idiot. You'll poke for days with Muramana and deal tons of damage with all your offensive items. This is how I play Jayce, and how you should too once you get a hang of him.

Jayce's Strengths and Weaknesses Back to Top

First of all, when Should I Pick Jayce??

Jayce requires some sort of AP on his team, along with a tank. Since I like to play Jayce mid, that is usually where the team's AP comes from. During champion select, ask nicely for either your top or jungler to play an AP champion. When your team is all AD, your enemies will stack armor and you will deal no damage.

Strengths

  • Jayce is strong against:
  1. Melee Tanks without real sustain 27_64.png2_64.png24_64.png14_64.png
  2. Immobile Mages *no gapclosers* 13_64.png101_64.png68_64.png
  3. Champions with bad Early games 55_64.png23_64.png157_64.png121_64.png
  • Jayce Excels at:
  1. Mid game skirmishes
  2. Ganks
  3. Poking

Weaknesses

  • Jayce has problems against:
  1. Sustain champs 36_64.png84_64.png8_64.png39_64.png
  2. All in champions 62_64.png80_64.png39_64.png

    Jayce struggles when:
  1. He gets first blooded early game
  2. He falls behind
  3. Bot lane feeds

Laning as Jayce Back to Top

Top Jayce

Top lane Jayce is primarily picked as a counter to a late game scaling Tanky Champion, such as 27_64.png2_64.png24_64.png14_64.png and others. The reason Jayce is picked here is to easily bully and deny these champions from farming and become a late game monster. Your job is to shut these people down early by poking them down and killing them, allowing you to snowball harder than they will, potentially letting you to carry the game. A disadvantage to this is your team will lack a tank if your junglier is not playing one. Be sure to have a tank on your team before you play Jayce top lane, or your damage will be unable to be used when you're being focused every teamfight. However, I do NOT reccomend top Jayce in the current meta, since you not picking a tanky top laner could mean your team is too squishy to take part in teamfights.

Mid Jayce

After the Season 4 World Championship, mid Jayce rose to popularity due to extremely skilled Korean players, such as Pawn and Dade playing him to his full extent. The purpose of mid lane Jayce is to poke the enemies down with your E Q shock combos, and provide the team utility with your acceleration gate, as well as dishing out damage to carries during team fights. Mid Jayce will go either one or the other ways. The first way is the good one, your jungler showed more presence than the enemy's, or you're just a boss and can win lane on your own, allowing you to keep on killing your opponent and snowballing into other lanes via ganks. The other thing that can happen is their jungler will camp the shit out of you, therefore shutting you down and not being able to do anything the entire game. To prevent the second one of these things from happening, do both of these things: ward and ask your jungler for help. Warding is essential in every lane, but be sure to put even more work into warding mid lane since the enemies have two ways to come through the lane and gank you.

Game Stages Back to Top

Early Game (Levels 1-6)

  • Farm, farm, farm. The more farm you have, the better
  • KILL YOUR LANE OPPONENT! Is your jungler ganking? Awesome! Get some more gold!
  • Try not to die. Seriously, getting behind early is how you will lose as Jayce

Mid Game (Levels 7-14)

  • Try taking early towers as Jayce. If you are playing top lane Jayce, taking an early tower around 10-15 min then rotating mid and taking another is very efficient and can build a massive lead.
  • COMMUNICATE! Do you see the enemy jungler in top lane? Ping your team's jungler and your bot lane to get dragon! The sacrifice your top laner made (if he died) will be worth if your team can secure dragon and possible turrets!
  • Help other lanes out. If you are mid lane and have a gold lead on your enemy laner and you see your bot lane being pushed up to their turret, man up and head bot! You could possible secure kills while also getting dragon or the enemies bot turret as a bonus. However, be wary of your own lane being pushed, or the enemy mid laner or jungler following you bot.

Late game (Levels 15+)

  • TAKE MORE TOWERS. Like I said, the more towers you have, the easier it will be for you to win.
  • Group up! Games that are won are usually due to the team who is grouped first (mainly because they have the gold lead...). Grouping and taking objectives is a sure way to secure victory.
  • POKE SOME MORE. HOLY SHIT POKE THOSE FUCKERS DOWN. YOU GET BLUE? MORE POKE.

What else should I know? Back to Top

Ask your Jungler for Blue!

I cannot emphasize how crucial it is to get blue on Jayce. Getting blue will let you spam more spells, which will let you get your muramana earlier.

Positioning

Position as Jayce as you would an ADC. In the back, away from their damage. You will dish out the damage to their team without dying super fast.

Be a nice player

Please don't be that one guy that flames the whole team. Flaming just makes you lose. Making yourself feel better then losing the game is incredibly retarded. Be nice to others!

Please have fun

Don't pick champs just because they're in the meta. This is a video game, make sure you're having fun!

Nerfs, Changes, & Bug Fixes Back to Top

4.21 Nerfs
Jayce's Hyper Charge (Cannon W) got a slight nerf in 4.21. The nerf is:

Hyper Charge now goes on cooldown after the third shot rather than right on cast
COOLDOWN 14/12/10/8/6 seconds ⇒ 13/11/9/7/5 seconds

What does this mean for Jayce?

  • For one, It will be a bit longer to spam W while getting back to lane, getting stacks on your tear, which is a slight nuisance, but not terrible.
  • Jayce will not be picked or banned as much as he was before this, which is good since you can actually get into a game without him being banned.
  • Jayce's early slightly nerfed, Late game BUFFED. Since you can't zone enemies out with your W like you used to be able to, this will take some pressure off of your lane opponent. However, in late game teamfights, your cooldown will technically be lower if you fire all our shots immedietly after casting your hyper charge. Is this a good change? You tell me.
Conclusion
This nerf is just a minor annoyance for people who play Jayce. He will still do the exact same amount of damage, but with a slight longer cooldown while in laning phase. Don't let this discourage you from playing Jayce.

5.1 Nerfs

Hyper Charge
70/85/100/115/130% total attack damage ⇒ 70/80/90/100/110% total attack damage

Well, Jayce is apparently OP now that koreans play him. riot has decided to nerf his W's AD scaling from what it wass to something much more shitty.

What does this mean?
  • This means less people will play jayce and he won't be banned anymore. Yay?
  • You really won't be able to do high burst anymore due to the extra 20% AD that you're missing.
  • You still will do damage. Don't let the nerf make you think Jayce is useless now. Your EQ is still the exact same amount of damage as it was before, which is your primary damage source
Conclusion
You'll still do the same damage early game, poking, and all in with hammer/thundering blow. What do you not have? Insane burst. These nerfs don't kill Jayce, they just make his late game against carries less potent.

Preseason 6
From my testing that the best build is the build that I've been building for the past two seasons. The build path is better and you're able to get a perfect 40% CDR with it. All in all, pretty good patch for Jayce.

5.24
HOLY SHIT!!!! THEY FIXED THE AUTO ATTACK BUG! YOUR AUTO ATTACK SPEED IS NO LONGER HINDERED WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR PASSIVE UP!!

edit: ok never mind, it's still present but it's not as bad as it used to be.
edit 2: never mind it's still awful

6.6
BUFFS! Q Hammer damage increased, ratio increased, mana cost down! Great news, will help with laning phase and dueling a lot, and at all stages of the game for that matter.

6.17
Incoming buffs! Thundering Blow mana cost a flat 40 throughout all levels and R cooldown reduced to 4 seconds! The Thundering Blow buff is very helpful to tank and tear-less variations of Jayce's builds, while the R cooldown reduction is helpful for all builds. The cooldown being reduced to 4 seconds will help tremendously with mobility at all game stages while also being amazingly useful in lane. Can't for these changes to hit live servers, they should help Jayce a good amount.

E D I T:

So the Thundering Blow buff went through but the R buff didn't, unfortunately. However a different buff went which changed his Hammer Passive Auto Attack buff to scale from AD instead of AP (.4 scaling off bonus AD). I think this buff isn't the biggest but it will help majorly in mid game burst scenarios. We'll see what happens.

A while later, I can say that the buffs made Jayce a tier 1 pick in competitive and made him an incredible top laner in solo queue. As for this patch, Jayce got a HUGE (indirect) buff, thanks to the buff to lethality. Because of this change, Jayce will be even stronger than he was previously. There are currently nerfs on the PBE, but I don't think they'll effect him too much. I'm actually glad they're nerfing him so I will be able to play my favorite champion again without being called a band wagoner :^)

A few nerfs here. While Jayce may fall out of competitive play, I think he's still a solid pick for solo queue. Some other thoughts of mine are that Tear Jayce might become the prominant build path because of the gate mana cost increase, but we'll have to see.
