14.png  - I take ignite for the early kill potential to help you snowball out of control. 
4.png  - Pretty standard to take flash for escaping or play making with Jayce's burst combined with ignite.

12.png - Teleport is an alternative to ignite if you like the global pressure, however I find Jayce's mobility enough to roam when taking him mid lane and much rather prefer ignite. But still a decent choice.

I like taking Feast and Biscuits for extra sustainability in lane, Jayce already has enough armor penetration and damage. I find Double Edged Sword and the Assassin mastery on a lower tier compared to their sustain counterparts.


It's also important to note the Precision mastery, as it provides Jayce with scaling armor penetration. However, the CDR mastery in the Cunning tree can also be utilized to Jayce's benefit.

Quick Note

Never, ever, EVER max E second. I see a LOT of Jayce players do this. It doesn't improve the E movement speed buff and doesn't increase the E's cooldown . Making W jayceW.png second will provide you with the needed mana sustain from Jayce's Hammer Auto attacks. Also, I sometimes like putting my second point into W rather than E for the extra attack speed when activated in Cannon mode, gives room for positive trades early.

Early Laning

Abuse jaycepassive.png and jayceR.png! Switching between the two constantly gives you an augmented auto after changing. Here is a good combo for level 1 trading.

jayceR.png > Auto > Cannon Q > jaycepassive.png > jayceQ.png > Auto



This combo deal's loads of damage. It's important to get the Cannon augmented auto out first as it reduces the enemy's armor allowing the next half deal even more damage. 

IMPORTANT: Keep in mind Jayce's power spike levels (1 / 3 / 4).

Once you hit level 3 on Jayce, you have 6 abilities while most of your match ups will only have 3. It is rare to have a 60.png or a 76.png in mid lane.

Most important part of Jayce's kit is his versatility. Being able to poke down your opponent in lane, and changing to Hammer stance for trading is powerful early and mid game.

Remember to Auto attack in Hammer Stance jayceQ.png (this is hammer stance Q image) when you are out of mana, most people do not know you gain mana per auto with his W's passive! 

Roaming Time!

At this point you should have at least 3142.png or the ingredients for Youmuu's Ghostblade (items are more in depth below). Jayce has movement speed buffs built in his kit left to right. He has his Cannon E, and his Stance changes give a short burst of movement speed. I typically enjoy pressuring the enemy jungle as Jayce when I roam, getting deep wards and sniping small camps.

It's even better when you and your Jungler are on the same page when invading the jungle. This is the typical combo I use when Ganking a lane or invading the Jungler.

To summarize this combo, you start with the Cannon E to gain a huge movement speed buff for yourself as well as other teammates following up. I engage with Hammer Stance to burst down the enemies to a low enough health to finish them off in Cannon Stance. 

Understanding that Jayce isn't only a poke champion is incredibly important to utilizing him to his full potential. His abilities combo into each other to create a high mobility powerhouse champion.

    I enjoy getting Dorans first for extra sustainability
    This is a great option and builds into most item paths for Jayce

Situational Items

    Armor Pen > Tear

Armor Penetration vs Tear

Jayce snowballs hard with Armor Penetration. It helps shred enemies in the Mid game, and continues into the Late game. I notice a lot of Jayce players that will always build 3070.png, I find that Jayce's W passive in Hammer Stance is enough mana sustain to not need tear. However, if your team is behind and the game is heading to the late game, 3042.png will be a huge power spike. 

(   I rarely build tear on Jayce, and rather look to end the game around 20 minutes.  )


Quick Note:

With Mid Season updates (Patch 6.9) Armor Penetration works on turrets! 
Jayce has a high pushing potential with his Cannon W and Hammer Stance Auto applies the extra damage on turrets.
