Summoner Spells Back to Top

Always take 4.png on Jayce, no exceptions.

Take 14.png if you want to kill people in lane, or if you're facing someone who has ridiculous regen that you want to be able to kill late game. (ie. 8.png106.png, or any one with 16.png)
Take 12.png to have map pressure or if your opponent has all-in pressure on you and you don't think you can reliably out-play them (ie. 92.png or 240.png) (or to cover up your weaknesses in lane while you're learning Jayce).

Masteries Back to Top

This is my standard mastery page for Jayce. This sets you up to burst the enemy champion down with 6362.png and you can get up to a 5% damage increase for getting those kills through 6141.png. Aim to force trades in lane whenever Thunderlord's is off cooldown.

You can split between 6131.png and 6134.png if you want to get some more life steal for in lane. This isn't a bad idea because I generally don't recommend 1055.png as a starting item for Jayce, but I prioritize early damage over life-steal since early on is where damage from masteries/runes matter the most (because the general stats numbers are so much lower then).
You also could choose to go 6352.png over 6351.png if you wanted the 45% CDR, but again I prioritize the early damage.

TL;DR: Qjaycetotheskies.png>Wjaycestaticfield.png>Ejaycethunderingblow.png

Take E level 2 for the massive damage spike that an Accelerated Shock Blast (E-Q) gets you and you can have a reliable all-in.

jaycetotheskies.png
Q is your primary source of damage, for poke (Shock Blast) or all-ins (To The Skies), so you max that first.

jaycestaticfield.png
W is your primary way to deal sustained damage (Hyper Charge) and to recover your mana (passive from Lightning Field), so this is your second max.

jaycethunderingblow.png
E is your one-point-wonder, picked up at level 2 for the damage increase to your E-Q combo. You have no reason to put any additional points into it until you can't put them anywhere else.

jaycepassive.png
Jayce's passive swaps his forms thereby giving him 7 skills, but equally important is that it also empowers his next auto-attack and gives him a small burst of speed. This speed burst can help you stay/get in range for the next auto-attack. You can also use this speed increase to reduce your travel times by swapping your stances while moving around the map. You also get extra resistances while in Hammer Stance.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Standard Start
The "I'm going to take a lot of dumb unavoidable poke" Starting Set

Core Items

Pick one to rush. Youmuu's is standard, EoN is for against a team with reasonable AP threats and telegraphed CC, Maw is for against a minimum of 3 AP threats.
This is your go to second item. Damage, CDR, AoE Life Steal. Everything a Jayce could want.
Mortal Reminder is a important item to pick up late game, but perhaps more important is Executioner's Calling which can be grabbed at any point after your first item to reduce the enemies' healing.
    Boots, pick one.
    Consumables

Situational Items

    Offensive Options
    Defensive Options

TL;DR

Start 1036.png and 3x2003.png. Rush 3142.png into 3812.png, picking up 3123.png and 3047.png/3111.png somewhere on the way. Finish your build by getting a defensive item (3026.png/3139.png), finishing your armor pen item (3033.png), and then getting another damage item (3031.png/3078.png/3147.png/3072.png).
Swap 3142.png for 3156.png or 3814.png when against a heavy AP team.

Explanation

Best start with Jayce (IMO) is 1036.png and 3x2003.png. Two reasons, first you get 3 pots to regen your HP with, second it acts as a shortcut for your build since you can go back with 800 gold and get 3134.png or 3133.png and a 2003.png. With a Doran's Item you can't that same buy until 1150 gold. (In the long run Doran's Items are a loss of gold and an item slot, so the Long Sword saves you 270 gold [450 buy - 180 sell price on Doran's Blade/Shield] and gets you along on your build quicker.)

We rush 3142.png because it gives us Lethality and CDR, allowing us to deal more damage early.
From there we look to end the Early Game and roam getting our teammates strong. Because we want to be on the map longer and improve our trades/all-in potential we go 3812.png as the next major item.
At some point while building Youmuu's or Death's Dance you will buy your boots, 90% of the time it'll be 3047.png or 3111.png.
During that same portion of the game you're building Death's Dance you should also pick up 3123.png to hinder the enemy team's regen. This is especially important to get relatively early versus champs like 58.png8.png266.png114.png41.png55.png84.png who have ways to get health back or build life-steal/magic-vamp early on.

From here you want to pick up a situational Defensive Item, most likely 3026.png or 3139.png, and complete 3123.png into 3033.png.
At this point you can either double down on damage, getting 3031.png (auto-attack damage), 3078.png (burst), 3072.png (more life-steal), or 3147.png (lethality and vision denial), or you can get another defensive item like 3053.png or the other of 3026.png or 3139.png.
If the game goes so late that you want to sell your boots then I'd recommend you make sure you have both  3026.png and 3139.png and then you can get one of the damage items as well.

Situational First Item Choices

3156.png instead of 3142.png when you're against a heavy AP team (think 3 AP threats) or in lane versus an AP all-in threat (8.png/84.png).
3814.png  instead of 3142.png when you want to dive through someone's CC (101.png,45.png)
3071.png instead of 3142.png when you're against a team with at least 2 tanks and you can't out-push your lane opponent.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

--Unplayed--

Avoid his knock-up and he shouldn't have much all in potential. You also can jaycethunderingblow.png him out of his aatroxq.png if you're fast enough.
Get 3123.png early to mess with his life-steal.

VS

Akali

Medium

She's both squishy and melee ranged. Abuse your range an auto her every time she comes forward for a minion. You should have lane dominance levels 1-5 with plenty of kill potential, just be careful for her level 6 spike if she has any damage because she can and will try to kill you.

It might be worth going 3156.png and picking up an early 3123.png as well.

VS

Anivia

Medium

The queen of wave clear. You have kill potential on her as long as you avoid her stun, just don't dive under turret when her passive aniviapassive.png is up.

Also your Hammer jaycethunderingblow.png will stop her channeling her ult.

VS

Katarina

Medium

Her all-in can be quite scary so going 3156.png isn't a bad idea, though not strictly required. However you also have a consistent kill threat on her and she often won't go 3157.png first and you can kill her on an all in until she gets it.

You can Hammer jaycethunderingblow.png her out of channeling her ultimate to cancel its damage. She can also avoid your Hammer jaycetotheskies.png by katarinaewrapper.png'ing out of the area of impact.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

TF is squishy and needs to pickacard.png blue card the wave to stay in lane happily. As long as his pickacard.png is on CD (6 seconds at all ranks) you can do whatever you want to him.

TF also doesn't have a level 6 damage spike, so you remain the dominant one in lane all game, just know you will get stun carded so keep an eye out for ganks.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

His poke is un-dodge-able and his damage is not one huge burst, so go 3156.png. Get an early 3123.png to reduce his spell-vamp and finish it into 3033.png to negate the tankiness he gets from 3157.png.

Preface Back to Top

Hi, I'm a scrub.

I've been consistently high Silver since is started playing League, knocking on the door of Gold every season since Season 5 but never playing enough to get there.

This guide is to help anyone else who's trying to learn Jayce and to give me a place to put all my thoughts out there. For better or worse this guide's goal is for both of us to improve, you and I, me while writing and editing, you by reading and critiquing.

With all that out of the way, here's my guide on Jayce, The Defender of Tomorrow.

Overview Back to Top

This is a general guide for Jayce, this means for playing him Top or Mid.

I do not support or condone the idea of playing him in the jungle or as a support, and while you *can* play him as an ADC I'd not recommend it.

Over-all Jayce is pretty strong and is a reasonably rounded champion. He has a reasonably safe laning phase since he can farm from range and can stop a decent amount of all-ins by just using his jaycethunderingblow.png (Thundering Blow) and swapping forms for the move-speed. Jayce also does enough damage to threaten all-ins during the laning phase on almost every champion in the game if he plays his cards right.

Now there's two main ways to play Jayce. You can play him for the Early Game/Mid Game or the Late Game.
I play him for the Early/Mid Game because if you win then you don't need the Late game. Also your damage is always threatening enough against certain Champs on the other team, such as the ADC, Mid-Laner, and any Damage Supports, that you can still reliably pick off Champs in the Late Game with the Early/Mid Game build. Just accept that you probably won't solo kill tanks once they hit 4 or more items.

This guide is for the Early/Mid Game Jayce. This means we will not be building 3070.png!
