  1. You want to be in the middle of the enemy team when a fight approach so you will most likely be in range to exhaust the right targets (ad/ap carry most of the time)
  2. Exhaust has a huge slow so landing your q on your target will get a lot easier

The only time i can see tp being actually better than exahust is in a really hardmatchup when you think you might need to recall and tp back. Otherwhise unless playing sidelanes i think exhaust is miles better

  • Wandered over Savagery - You will lasthit most of the minions by q'ing so you don't really need the bonus damage on your autos

karthuspassive.png Death Defied

Upon dying, karthus can continue to cast spells for 7 seconds. 
Remember that your ult needs a 3 second channel so spend those 7 seconds well considering that if you want to ult while on your passive, you have to save those 3 seconds.


karthuslaywastea1.png LAY WASTE

The bread and butter ability. It deals a small aoe damage. And it deals double damage if it strikes only 1 enemy. So to farm early on, try to position your cursor so your karthuslaywastea1.png will hit only a minion at time. Remember same goes for champions, if you hit an enemy champion while also damaging a minion with your karthuslaywastea1.png it will not deal that much damage.

karthuswallofpain.png Wall of Pain


Underrated spell. Reduces 15% of the enemys magic resist and also reduces their movemnt speed by 40-80% based on rank. Basically a good wall can really make the difference -1v1 -In teamfight -While setting up a gank or being ganked.
Also since it slows it will be much easier to land your q on your targets.

Passive: When karthus kills a unit it restores mana. (that's why you can actually farm minions with your Q)
Active/Toggle on: Drains mana each second to deal magic damage to nearby enemies.
Be really carefull this spell actually wastes a lot of mana, while not doing that much damage. Also it can be usuefull to insta toggle it on and off to get one tick of damage to lasthit minions when needed.

After a 3 sec channel (BE REALLY CAREFULL TO NOT HAVE ANY ENEMY NEARBY THAT CAN ACTUALLY STOP YOU FROM CHANNELING IT BECAUSE THE CD WILL NOT BE REFOUNDED and you will also look dumb) deals an amount of damage to EVERY enemy champion.

    Read Description

Start with

1001.png Matchup when you might use the extra mov speed to dodge skills (example brand)
2033.png Kinda an investiment, it repays it overtime. It's not really the best starting item for karthus tho.
1056.png Standard AP start in most games. Most of the time i would start dorans.

Core items (also RoA & Archangel)


3070.png -> 3010.png -> 3027.png -> 3040.png

This is the best route on karthus, gives you plenty of mana to fight and also it will give you plenty of APs due to the 3040.png mana-to-Ap passive convert.


The 4th and 5th best items


3089.png -> 3135.png

This will boost your damage a lot. Most of the time is the best route to go


Other Items (core and situational)


3030.png The only hextech item i actually see viable on karthus. You might want to try it out. I don't feel it's needed since the active it's a slow and you already have an aoe slow in your kit.
3102.png Might be usefull if the enemies are something like 4 or 5 ap. Otherwhise i don't really see this being a core. Might also be usefull if you REALLY feel like it could save your life vs something like annie/fizz and so on.
3116.png This item is nice on karthus. I recommed you to build it when facing divers/melee (ex yasuo/malphite/jax) champions. They will have trouble dealing with the constant slow of your E.
3157.png Might be a fine buy vs a lot of AD champions. Also you might buy it to nullificate abilities like fizz ultimate lux combos and so on
3165.png Pretty nice item if you need the grevious wound passive

  • Farm and if you can push her to her tower she will lose some cs, if not try to keep the lane in the middle to not be exposed to ganks
  • Respect her Charm-Flash
  • After 6 be really carefull if you step too close and she's good she can kill you even trought exhaust

  • Be really carefull about your positioning because she can wall you out and stun you
  • If you get hit by her Q you are gonna have an hard time so keep calm farm and watch out for your positioning
  • After 6 you can't do anything but farm

  • Don't overdo to get all the cs. You can manage to miss some cs if it means not losing half hps.
  • At 6 be ready to exhaust her as soon as she tries to all in you.

Easy
  • Try to always push as much as you can doing this you will make him pay a price for every failed roam he attempts to do
  • Try to be aware of where he's roaming to and be reactive with pings. An aurelion sol that fails to roam is a weak one.

Honestly just fuck this matchup he has more range than you and u are immobile. If he's good this matchup is a pain in the ass to play since you basically will never be on range to damage him without taking a ton of damage in return.

  • Try to farm as much as possible.

  • Brand has higher range than you
  • Push him out and make him choose on either using his spell to lasthit or to harrass you. Either way if you play that carefull it's a win for you.

A little introduction (READ THIS BEFORE CHAMPION MATCHUPS) Back to Top

You will see a lot of medium/high difficoult matchups. Since karthus has a unique playstyle i really wanted to point out a few things before jumping into every matchup detail.

  • Karthus is a LATEGAME carry. And his main task is to FARM as much as he can.
  • Karthus is not BAD by any means in 1v1s, the only problem is your 1v1 potential is reliant on how many Q's you can land.
  • If you play the lane correctly without taking risks most of the 'MEDIUM' matchups turn out to ben 'Easy'  and same thing goes for the 'HARD' matchups which will turn into 'MEDIUM'. Somematchup are still 'HARD'  tho. Read descriptions for everymatchup to find out.
  • As long as you farm well enough and don't feed you are doing your job. That doesn't mean that you can't try to make plays or try some 1v1's. In the right situation karthus is actually a beast even for 1v1.

Karthus Role


  • Karthus is a mage
  • Karthus is a dps type of champion
  • Karthus has a unique playstyle and he needs to be in the middle of the fight to do work
  • Karthus is a lategame monster, he scales pretty well into mid/lategame

Karthus Playstyle


  • FARM     I can't stress enought, your objective is to transition well enough from early to mid/lategame. You need to farm and you need to do it well. You can also take raptors/wolves (if your jungler dosn't get mad at you and you can do it without losing to many hp/mana/time)
  • MAP AWARNESS     You need to be aware of the map. You need to be aware of when to ult and you also need to be aware of where your enemy midlane is. Your roam are not that great so you need to be able to predict what your enemy is doing

Karthus in teamfight


  • BE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIGHT    Contrarily from other AP carries Karthus needs to be in the middle of the enemy team, almost acting like a tank
  • DO AS MUCH DAMAGE AS YOU CAN      Your job is to do damage. If you can reach carries with your q's it's even better, if not try to do as much damage as you can to every enemy
  • DIE IF YOU HAVE TO     Your passive is absoluterly amazing in teamfight, while dead you have 7 seconds to deal even more damage. Karthus is the only champion where dying is not always a bad thing. If you have to die in order to do the most damage do it.
  • DIE IN THE RIGHT SPOT     Dying isolated is useless, sure you will have some more seconds in which you will cast your ult but well, that's still a failure. If you die make sure you do it in a good spot where you can still do damage to the enemies.
  • EXHAUST THE RIGHT TARGET    Pretty self explanatory. You have an exhaust and you should be in the position to exhaust the carries. Do it.
  • DON'T PANIC BE CALM AND HIT YOUR Q'S.

The 'WildTurtle' aka 'Flashing foward'


- Ever dreamed about flashing into the whole enemy team? 
- Did you tried it with yasuo and then got flamed to death?

Well in the right situation doing it with karthus is actually THE RIGHT THING TO DO ! 
As i already explain in the 'Teamfight' part if the situation is correct you can actually flash into the enemy team to be able to do the most damage and to be able to also die in a good spot.

Tips/Tricks Back to Top

There are not many things to say about karthus but i'll try to list some of the gamechaning little things


  • Be carefull when casting your Q, if it strikes only one target it deals double damage (carefull aswell on lasthit early game, i can almost guarantee you that you will lose some minions if you are not used to)
  • Use your passive correctly and don't overdue. If you wait too long to cast your ultimate (you need a channel of 3 seconds) your passive will not last long enough.
  • Position your wall correctly, and remember it also reduces magic resist
  • Remember to use your seraph (if you build it) the 700/800 more shield it's usefull.
  • Check your scoreboard and think whisely about who to use your exhaust on.

Pros


  • Good Midgame & Great lategame
  • Great teamfight presence
  • Good waveclear (especially later in the game)
  • Presence in other lanes without roaming with your ult

Cons


  • Not so great lanephase
  • Not so great roam potential
  • You have to hit those q's

Why would i play karthus?


  • Unique playstyle
  • You like to farm and love to teamfight
