Summoner Spells Back to Top

I almost always run ignite flash; I think that teleport is a great spell, but come late game ignite really helps you kill the important champions such as the AD carry. It is very difficult to kill a good kassadin late game; you almost always have to catch him out of position to take him down, as hard as that is already with rift walk as an actual ability in this game.

Ignite also helps in lane greatly, the added true damage is just something that you really need laning as kassadin in all scenarios

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Start this against heavy poke laners
    Standard start vs AP

Core Items

****NEVER BUY THIS ITEM***** It is overrated on kass, it does not help much with mana and it is a waste of 700 gold early game.
Finish your catalyst as soon as possible, then rush to finish roa for da deeps If you're going to roam you should get lv 1 boots since they are cheaper now, but if you think on your next back you'll have enough to get roa it's better to have a roa because it increases your damage and sustain by alot
Finish sorc boots (I only upgrade after I get roa), then rush ZHONYAS
Grab a lich bane after RoA
    Final Item

Situational Items

3070_32.png So..this item. It's garbage and a waste of money like I said earlier in the description for never buying tear. It costs 700 total gold which could be spent instead on a dorans ring or a crystal for catalyst. You'll also want to save money to buy a zhonyas instead of archangel's, it is much more effective in fights than you think.
On another note, the recent tear nerf has made getting 750 stacks much harder. Tear is only good on champions that have skills you can spam with low mana cost. Kassadin is a champion that uses bursts of mana to deal massive amounts of damage =)

The reason behind getting 3157_32.png before 3089_32.png-
Almost every game you'll have more physical damage rather than magic damage on the enemy team, so zhonyas is already a good item to buy in terms of defense. However, even if the enemy's team is heavy on AP damage, you should still rush 3157_32.png because of its usefulness on kassadin.
Here are list of things zhonyas can do:
  • You can initiate fights and confuse the enemy so hard. People don't expect a kassadin to rift walk into their entire team. By the time you are out of stasis, your rift walk is already off cool down and you can just R away, flash if needed. Your team should have killed everyone by then, if not brought everyone to 1 hp so you can clean up.
  • You can save yourself if you get caught- negating damage, or simply just killing time so you can rift walk again.
  • If you get fed, you will have a zhonyas very early which helps you dive enemies with ease, if you dive for instance the top laner and take tower agro, you can kill the enemy with the help of your own tower laner, activate zhonyas so the tower switches agro, then rift walk out. Important: When you have a slight advantage mid game, it is important to act on that advantage via dives, roaming, farming when needed.
  • You can rift walk into the enemy fountain and live
Anyways, if the pictures make my full build order sound confusing here it is in text:
Start: flask 3 pots
first back: dorans ring or catalyst
next: you can buy lvl 1 boots or finish roa
next: upgrade your boots to sorc boots or buy a large rod if you have enough
next: finish your zhonyas (you can still have lvl 1 boots)
next: save for death cap, then get void staff. For a 6th item, buy whichever situational item listed above that fits the game. Usually I'm not in a game for long enough to buy a 6th item though

VS

Ahri

Medium

Spam your q's vs ahri and be sure to dodge at least the return of her Q. at 6, be careful to not get hit by her charm cause she can burst you. with a gank or 2 at 6 you should be able to dominate her afterwards.

VS

Akali

Easy

you can negate her Q harass by Q'ing back at her whenever she Q's you. Just be careful at level 6 because she can burst you quite quickly. Buy a pink ward at lvl 6 and ask your jungler for a gank. use your pink ward when she stealths

VS

Anivia

Medium

spam q's at her, you should be able to farm and she will push you into turret. at 6, you can all in as long as you dont get directly stunned and comboed to 0. pretty similar matchup to ahri

VS

Annie

Medium

annie's actually decent vs kass early, she can spam q on you much more than you can, so take precautions pre 6. at 6, you have to avoid the tibbers stun otherwise you're done. try to roam instead of fighting 1v1, then once you get kills you can easily kill her all in

VS

Brand

Easy

pretty easy, he can't spam spells as easily and usually uses his skills to farm+ you can easily dodge them. go ham at 6. (spam q's before then)

VS

Cassiopeia

Easy

People say she counters kass, but since she spams q and e, your force pulse (e) will be up almost constantly. dodge all her spells pre 6 + roam efficiently then you can go in. farm at turret until 6

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

try to farm till 6, you cant die otherwise youll never be able to kill him. be careful and roam smartly. dont even try to spam q's on him because he will just heal up from his passive. just free farm at turret

VS

Diana

Easy

Hard to kill pre6 because of her shield, with the recent kassadin nerfs its much harder to kill her. she will push, so farm at turret and ask for ganks. occasionally roam

VS

Evelynn

Easy

if you lose to her (nobody plays her mid anymore)

VS

Fizz

Medium

another champion that people say counters kass hard..and it is very hard now with kassadin's changes. he will most likely dodge your q harass with his trickster skill, but he will run out of mana eventually. keep spamming q's at him; you should be able to have the same cs if not better. careful at lvl 6 as you will not be able to beat him 1v1. wait for ganks to snowball

VS

Galio

Medium

If you die pre 6 you'll have big problems, but if you kill him pre 6 the game will be so easy for you. the only way you can kill him really is by ganks and vice versa for him..you can roam easily, galio doesn't really push like a beast without loosing mana unless he has blue buff

VS

Gragas

Easy

with the gragas changes, it can be quite hard for kassadin to survive in lane now. you should be able to farm at turret. ask for ganks and you will be able to snowball quite hard.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

fk this guy, its really hard to kill him, you cant cs with his turrets in lane cause theyll destroy you, your best bet is just to let him destroy your turret + roam, then you can kill him pretty easily

VS

Jarvan IV

Hard

Jarvan is a very difficult match up for kassadin. His built in armor reduction can really damage your early game, so play passively until you hit 6. Don't go for the cs if you think you will get hit by his E Q combo. If you do, you have to flash out immediately or he will kill you. Play smartly, and let the wave push to your turret as jarvan can't really keep the lane in the middle.

Through ganks, you should be able to conquer and snowball over him through the mid game. Jarvan's late game is significantly weaker than kassadin's so as long as you survive early game, you should win. He is also forced to build damage which makes him a farily squishy target to kill/gank.

VS

Jayce

Hard

i think jayce is the hardest counter to kass, his auto atts just hit u for so much and the amount of dmg his poke does is terror..but since they nerfed the cd a little bit you can just try to farm safely and wait till later on, like level 11 because thats when you do alot of dmg. consider buildling a seekers arm guard early.

VS

Karthus

Easy

a good karthus might be able to shut you down pre 6 since you have to melee to cs..but at 6..:) spam q's at him and cs at turret if needed

VS

Kassadin

Hard

hehe

VS

Katarina

Easy

because you cant silence her anymore during her ult, this matchup is a little harder. you can still spam q's at her and farm easily, just be careful not to R in as she is ulting otherwise you will take the full damage of her and probably die.

VS

Kayle

Medium

can be hard pre 6, her auto atts do alot, but try to take advantage of when her ranged attack is down, since she will have to melee the minions. you will most likely get dove by their jungler quite a few times since kayles ult is op. ask your jungler for help if you are low and pushed into your turret

VS

Kennen

Medium

he can auto att you to death, just try to cs as best you can to 6, if you can get ahead it will be an easy game; the amount of damage a kass does to kennen is O _ O

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

after the nerfs, kha isn't that hard to lane against, you can just stay out of range of his q and keep on using q to harass him. you can also out trade him if he decides to use his q on a minion then proceeds to cs another creep on cd. at 6 you can all in, and you can roam since he doesn't clear as fast anymore

VS

LeBlanc

Easy

because of the change to kassadins passive, its a little harder for kassadin to beat leblanc. however, since leblanc doesnt silence anymore, you can still snowball harder than ever. as she is q'ing you, q back so you dont take damage. be sure not to die 1v1 to her though, as it can snowball in either direction.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

very easy, she doesn't do much damage, and can't burst you down either. you most likely won't be able to kill her pre 6 so just farm

VS

Lux

Easy

she has strong harass early, but if you can catch her on cd's you can actually kill her pre 6. if not, just farm and kill her at 6 easily

VS

Malzahar

Easy

malz can be quite annoying in lane and can easily set up a gank at 6. however you can easily 1v1 him (spam q as he spams his e on you)

VS

Mordekaiser

Hard

his non-mana poke is pretty devastating, you have to carefully farm cause he will just continuously push which prevents you from roaming as much. you can still kill him though but if he gets a kill early he will just get out of control. late game you'll be able to crush him though

VS

Morgana

Medium

morgana can be difficult because of her spell shield, she can negate your q harass damage completely. you will be pushed into your turret 100%, where she will try to bind you. your best bet is to ask for jungler help or roam, but you might miss a ton of minions. here is where i would bring TP/flash instead of ignite.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

very squishy early on, you can use silence to harass, if she tries poking you with auto attacks she will take minion damage and at some points you can actually walk up and auto att her for massive damage with w on. at 6 you can just go all in and kill her, she can't burst you

VS

Orianna

Medium

her auto attacks are really painful and if she starts shield she will negate all of your q damage and auto attack you to death. you have to farm cautiously but if you get behind you won't even be able to beat her at 6. however, you could R in and flash the ori ult and continue to kill her to start the snowball

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Consider starting cloth armor 5 pots vs pantheon. I always start flask 3 pots, but if you are an inexperienced kassadin player i would probably start cloth 5. Pantheon can do unexpected burst damage to you, especially if you are below half health.

It is very important to stay above 70% health, miss CS if you need to. You out scale him very very hard as the game progresses, so as long as you haven't died by lvl 6 and can maintain decent farm, you should be able to win game due to Pantheon's terrible late game.

VS

Rumble

Easy

spam q's on rumble and make sure to not stand in his flamespitter for too long. you might be zoned out of some cs, but he will have to push regardless. farm at turret. you can get easy ganks from your jungler at 6

VS

Ryze

Medium

A good ryze will try to shut you down, the poke is pretty annoying but you can trade back with q if he only uses q to poke you. at 6 you can go in, he will snare you but you can use your second stacked rift to do damage. be aware of your mana though

VS

Sion

Hard

if you fall behind you wont be able to take down even his shield with your q e combo, so make sure to keep up in farm and safely trade (go in when his shield is down etc)

VS

Swain

Easy

very easy, you can just farm until 6 and go on him, his ult will let you attack him super fast. laning phase might be difficult if the swain is constantly using his spells on you, but try to play as safe and smart as possible

VS

Syndra

Easy

she can't 100 0 you if you are even at level 6, play safe and it should be the easiest game of your life. you can also roam easily vs syndra

VS

Talon

Medium

I put talon as medium because most people don't really know how to win the kass vs talon match up, but it is actually not that hard to do well vs talon. his damage early game is his rake spell, but you can dodge that harass by moving back as he is about to cast it. it is very predictable; at 6, you need to man up and go on him because if he starts the fight by silencing you, you are forced to immediately rift walk out, losing the trade. once again, play smart and wait for talon to use his spells on farm or to harass you

VS

Twisted Fate

Medium

Depending how good the tf player is, it should be very easy to just farm and harass using silence. at early levels the q harass just destroys tf since he's so squishy, forcing him to play more passively in lane so you can farm easier. a good tf will continue to poke you and force you to stay in lane. in this case, you will just have to wait until late game where you can 100 0 tf so easily lol

VS

Veigar

Easy

dont play kass if you lose to veiglol (spam qs vs him)

VS

Viktor

Easy

i don't know what viktor does but i'm thinking there's a reason nobody plays him

VS

Vladimir

Easy

he will most likely use his q to farm more efficiently, in order to make that happen just keep q harassing him and csing. when you go in to kill him, make sure to not use your q and e at the same time because he can negate all of that damage by pooling. try to bait the pool before using your combo

VS

Xerath

Easy

He will most likely try to harass you pre 6, but you can farm without dying- at 6, you can rift walk on- if he attempts to stun you, flash behind him quick and proceed to kill him to start your snowball

VS

Zed

Hard

Like talon, melee champs can be beat by kassadin if you play the lane right. for zed, if they start:

dorans blade OR longsword 3 pots- keep using your q to harass them, you can start by outfarming them and eventually winning at 6 by outplay

red pot + 3 pots- be very careful because he can burst you 80 0 at lvl 4, you can use your Q to harass but make sure you're still able to cs

at 6, save your rift walk to move yourself after he ults you, then position yourself to dodge his spells however you can, (flash?). remember that your auto attacks outdamage his with nether blade on

VS

Ziggs

Easy

like all other poke champions, just dodge his skills, dont let him take so much control in lane that you get denied all the cs. at lvl 6 like always its gg

VS

Zilean

Easy

can easily negate a lot of the damage his bombs do by q'ing him at the right time.

VS

Zyra

Easy

her early game damage is pretty harsh, as long as you don't die pre 6 you should be able to kill her pretty easily. she cannot 100 0 kass (keep q harassing her and farm at turret)

How to lane Back to Top

**1/6/18 update***
I will be updating all matchups as I continue to play in season 8. Kassadin was already changed when I wrote this guide so everything that I have described underneath still holds true. Since the meta is a little different than what it was in season 4, I will update this guide as the season progresses to address how you should play as kassadin in season 8.

** update **

Everything I've said about kassadin should still apply season 5. Riot hasn't changed kassadin much, and his play style is still the same to how I've described it. One thing to note is that you should use rift walk more conservatively, but zhonyas should still be able to negate any difficulties of escape/team fight efficiency.

With the new season 4 kassadin, not much has changed about his laning phase except that he does less damage and does not silence. You will play kassadin the same was as before, but more carefully since his rift walk has increased cdr.

People say that kassadin has a weak laning phase, which is true for the most part. However, you can turn a lane to your favor unexpectedly, even vs. known counters to kassadin.

In lane, depending on who you're versing, you can use your Q to harass them quite effectively. The most important thing when laning as kassadin is knowing the enemy's champions cool downs. You always want to take advantage of the moment they use one or two skills to cs. Do not underestimate the effectiveness of your W, nether blade. *KASSADINS'S W IS NOW AN AUTO ATTACK RESET - USE A BASIC AUTO ATTACK AND THEN IMMEDIATELY PRESS W FOR MAXIMUM DAMAGE EFFICIENCY*. With experience, you can actually turn aggressive versus an enemy that overextends their  minion line of mid lane. I can't really explain it too well with words, but a Q and auto attack with nether blades activated is one of the strongest level 2 single target bursts as an AP champion in the game I would say. You can catch a lot of people off guard by bringing them down half hp from just a Q and maybe a few auto attacks.

Every champion that you go versus as kassadin requires a different mindset of how you will win, as every champion has different skills that you can use to kassadin's advantage, such as an ability power skill.

Kassadin's passive obviously won't work versus AD champions since he converts magic damage into attack speed. (CHANGED IN SEASON 4, there is no more attack speed conversion) Most people I believe think that kassadin should always be played as a champion that doesn't necessarily win lane then continues to win the game. This is true, but if someone were to win lane almost every game and effectively roam to every lane winning all lanes, then they would be unstoppable in solo queue. Sometimes it is better to just sit there not moving at all and auto attacking the enemy, taking a risk in dying for first blood. After playing kassadin for a while you get a feel of how much damage he actually does at all stages of the game; knowing the limits on kassadin can be abused and will essentially win you any lane.

Using your skills wisely Back to Top

You have:

Q (Null Sphere)
W (Nether Blade)
E (Force Pulse)
R (Rift Walk)

I will be using QWER references so that I don't have to type out the skill names while I'm writing this; it will also be easier to understand if I use QWER to explain dis.

So, obviously in lane your Q will be your main source of damage before you're level 6. I've already talked about laning so I will now explain what to do as you are outside of lane (roaming, teamfights, catching someone out)

1. Team Fights
You don't need to use your rift walk to do damage at all, you should use your R conservatively because it is your escape as well as damage when you need it. In a team fight, you should analyze what you can do with what items you have. Typically you'll want to chunk someone for free by Q E'ing and R'ing away or simply walking away. You don't want to R away when you don't even have to. Sometimes though, you'll want to R in depending on the situation. You need to analyze the team fight very quickly and decide if they have enough damage to kill you after you rift walk in, before you can R out again. It just comes with experience knowing when or when not to ult in.
If you have 3157_32.png already, then you are a god. You can initiate team fights like I said earlier in the item section by ulting in and E'ing everyone, slowing and confusing them.

Your main targets should be either the AP or AD carries, however in most situations you should first chunk the person closest to you before the team fight even starts. Kassadin is also a great peeler, so you can actaully stay back and help your adc instead as that can also be a great option to win a team fight if your adc can easily kite back a silenced and slowed champion.

2. Catching People
I think that slowing people is better than silencing people when you're trying to catch someone since they can still flash away while the silence animation is coming towards them. So what you'll want to do is R in, then quickly cast your E so slow them immediately, and follow up with a silence. This way people can catch up easily and kill da guy.

3. Using R wisely
People always want to stack their riftwalk so that it does a lot of damage, but that is not the best option =P it only adds an additional 100 damage per stack which is literally nothing late game, and kills your mana incredibly fast. In team fights you'll see yourself having 5-6 stacks near the end without knowing it. A kassadin player that plays smartly in team fights will find themselves cleaning up the fight with ease. I play kassadin as a clean up/initiator champion, which has gotten me a lot of success in solo queue.

Roaming (Early to mid game) Back to Top

Roaming is the key to solo queue. Kassadin is a champion that makes it very very easy to roam, which is why everyone says kassadin is one of the best solo queue champions in the game.

During the early game, you'll want to coordinate with your jungler as best as possible. At levels 6-9, you don't really have enough mana to riftwalk consecutive times, so you'll want to take advantage of the early game mobility within a certain radius of the mid lane. For instance, if both junglers find themselves fighting each other near mid lane, you can get to the fight much faster than the other ap mid can, usually resulting in a double kill for you if you kill their jungler while their mid is killing your own jungler (usually resulting in them being low and you being able to kill them). This is what you want to look for early game to get your snowball started.

Mid game is most important for a kassadin player. My favorite roam routes are as following (messed up circles are rift walks):
aZvpIGa.jpg

Obviously the best route would be just to walk down the both rivers to gank, but usually there's wards everywhere in dat river.

About the author Back to Top

Updated 1/6/2018

I quit league from season 5 until now- I will be trying to climb back to challenger in season 8. Having accomplished maintaining challenger rank in 2 of the earlier seasons, I will need to adapt to the current meta which is more objective based. I believe kassadin is still a top tier pick for solo queue and I will try to prove so by achieving my goal for this year. Stay tuned!

<---OLD ENTRY--->

Hi my name is shaun, and I was top 10 in solo queue (season 3), and currently rank ~25 season 4. I am also attending the University of Washington as a sophomore now. I was 2300 season 2 and decided to try out kassadin when I was playing on my other account, someone said to ban kassadin about 50 times in champion select. I have now learned how to play kassadin to his maximum potential which is why I have gotten such success in solo queue with a relatively small number of games as a challenger. Anyways, I hope you learned something from my guide, it is quite confusing I will admit so If you have any questions please feel free to comment. (The specific match up descriptions are very vague, so if you have any more questions about what to do in each lane just comment below)

You can watch my stream here www.twitch.tv/evertan, please feel free to follow =)
