Summoner Spells Back to Top

Always take 4.png, don't even consider not taking it.

12.png is the go-to summoner spell. It has many uses, and is much more useful than 14.png. If you're forced back early or die, you can just 12.png back and you won't fall behind too far. It gives added map pressure, which keeps enemies fearful of you, as you can enter a fight at any moment. Also, the multiple kills you can get from a good 12.png definitely out-value a single kill you get from 14.png.

The only time where I'll consider taking 14.png is if I'm laning against 50.png or 8.png. I guess it's good if you just want to win lane, but I think 12.png helps win lane more easily and you can snowball even harder with good usage. People usually say you take 14.png if you're confident in your lane matchup, but I disagree. If you were REALLY confident, you wouldn't need it to get kills. It's just not as impactful to the game as 12.png in my opinion.

3.png is an option against AD assassins or bursty mages I guess. I still take 12.png though.

Masteries Back to Top

My default mastery page. I just recently started going 12 in Resolve and it feels GREAT. Never going back to 12 Cunning.

Why only 1 point in Vampirism? 1 point is really all you need. Korean coaches and many others have made calculations that you regen lots of HP back with just ONE POINT in vampirism. So just do it.

Why Battle Trance? More consistent then the other two options. You don't really want to be taking 1.5% extra damage either as Kassadin.

Why do you take Deathfire Touch? How often are you actually going to proc Thunderlord's in lane? Just think about it. Sure, after lane phase you can proc it quite easily, but how about in lane phase? You're most likely to only get in 2 hits during trades and pokes pre-6, nulllance.png & forcepulse.png. Actually, most likely you're only going to be poking with nulllance.png . Deathfire Touch really adds up to a lot of poke damage. And if you've been constantly been wearing down your opponent, you'll be able to get a kill at 6 easily. It scales extremely well too. The only time I'll consider taking Thunderlord's is if I'm against a Melee champion, where you can get all your spells off.

Why Resolve? I've used Cunning for a while, but I'm going to be sticking with Resolve now. You're going to be eating a lot of autoattacks as 38.png, so all the damage reduction and regen has great value. It really makes getting through his lane phase easier. It minimizes damage you take in trades.

Toughskin vs Siegemaster? I feel like Toughskin is overall better, as it's more consistent. Siegemaster requires you to be standing within your tower's attack range to get the 8 armor and magic resist. Siegemaster could be better Pre-6, but Siegemaster kind of loses all of it's value Post-6.  WhileToughskin remains decent all game. I'd take Siegemaster vs Champions that constantly push into your tower. I like it against things like 126.png115.png69.png134.png.

Veteran's Scars vs Runic Armor? I just like the flat HP, and I feel like it's more valuable. Extra 50 HP is great. I actually swapped 2 of my Scaling HP Seals for Flat Armor Seals. You still end up with around 216 HP(208 to be exact) at 18, but you get +50 at level 1. And I feel like the little bit of armor goes great with the other masteries in the resolve tree.

Fearless vs Insight? I feel like the Fearless mastery is pretty underrated. The only people I've seen taking this mastery are players on MVP(4th Place in LCK right now). Apdo and other Korean players in solo queue have started taking this mastery recently. It gives really good stats for 1 point. At level 18, you're getting at least 27 bonus Armor and Magic Resist. It's very good considering the playstyle of 38.png.

I usually just max nulllance.png (Q) first as it's your most reliable form of poke, but there are exceptions.

There are many times where you'll be putting 2-4 points in nulllance.png first then maxing forcepulse.png (E).

I will max nulllance.png by level 9 if I'm still in lane phase, and/or I'm against heavy magic damage team. ( 134.png60.png68.png)
You want the stronger shield and poke.

If there's already team grouping and team fights, you'll want more AOE damage, and stronger slows for your team. So I'll keep nulllance.png where it's at and start maxing forcepulse.png

Against 157.png, put one point in nulllance.png at Level 1 and leave it there. Yasuo spams abilities and forcepulse.png cannot be blocked by yasuowmovingwall.png

Against 126.png238.png41.png, I put 3 points in nulllance.png, then max forcepulse.png after hitting 6. You don't really need the shield, but you're getting the 3 points for the poke damage.

38.png's ability usage is pretty simple. Poke with nulllance.png if you want to walk up and farm, punish an opponent for farming, or if they want to trade with you. And add forcepulse.png to the poke whenever you can.

Avoid farming with nulllance.png whenever possible, you lose a lot of lane pressure if you do this. You want to be constantly using it on your opponent to gradually wear them down.

Try to use forcepulse.png as early in your combo as possible so you can rebuild it's stacks faster.

Try to cancel your autoattack animations with netherblade.png for extra DPS whenver possible. If you expect them to 4.png or blow an escape right away as you riftwalk.png on them and won't be able to Auto W Auto, netherblade.png Auto is fine.

Post-6, the lane dynamics change a lot, and it's easy to achieve lane dominance and priority as 38.png. You're much more able to play more aggressive and you should use it to your advantage. You'll be able to zone most matchups away and force them to farm with abilities. riftwalk.png forward after they blow their cooldown's or main damage abilities right away and hit them with forcepulse.png nulllance.png. Once they're low enough, or you know they have nothing to retaliate with, you can add auto netherblade.png auto in between the combo as well. Do this correctly and you'll end up winning every trade. You'll at least force them to base at minimum.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

I buy this 100% of the time. More damage and sustain is good enough.
I never buy this. Refillable Potion, TP, and Catalyst gets me through lane safely
You don't need the mana regen, and Dark Seal is more cost efficient

I always try to get 1026.png on my first back for the stronger poke damage.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think 3010.png would be the better buy if you're constantly trading and/or if you're behind. I'll only buy it if I had the full 1100G. If you can only afford the components, just get 1026.png instead.

If you're forced back to base early, just grab a 1028_32.png or 1001.png.

Some people like to get 1056_32.png or upgrade into 2033.png, but it delays 3027_32.png too much for my liking. I guess it's fine if you're really struggling.

If you're against one of these guys 126.png238.png157.png, you could rush 3191.png

Finish 3027_32.png ASAP. I usually get mine around 9-11 minutes. Don't upgrade your boots until you finish 3027_32.png.

Pick whichever is most suitable for the enemy team comp 3158.png 3111.png 3020.png 3047.png.
I usually prioritize the CC reduction, and I will get 3111.png if they're packing multiple stuns and/or snares.
You'll get 40% CDR with full build and runes if you get 3158.png. Pre 16, the CDR on your ult is noticeable, and can be the difference between life and death at many times. Sometimes it's more valuable than the CC reduction.
I usually get one of these boots, it's about 50/50 for me.

Second big item is usually 3100.png. Sometimes you'll need 3157.png instead. It all depends on the game really.

If you're not sure, just get a 3100.png. It basically allows 38.png to duel almost anyone and delete squishys. You will have to play smarter and not be overly aggressive though, as won't have the invulnerability and you won't be as tanky. Try to focus on finding 1v1 picks, or cleaning up teamfights/skirmishes. Diving in and out on an enemy team won't be as easy, so you just have to play around that.

I buy 3113.png and 1026.png when building it. I don't feel like 3057.png is worth a slot or the gold. 38.png has 4 spells with AP ratios so buying more AP is much more valuable.

Scenarios where 3157.png second is better depends on how the teamfights are going. And obviously how many AD threats the enemy team has. If enemy ADC is so fed that you don't think you'll be able to one shot even with 3100.png3157.png is better option here. Get 3191.png before 3108.png.

Third item is whatever you didn't buy, so 3157.png or 3100.png.

Enemy team should have some Magic Resist by now, and it's a good time to buy 3135.png. Keep in mind that if you have multiple AP champions on your team (68.png and/or 60.png) you may need to buy 3135.png earlier. Enemy team will be building Magic Resist earlier, so you need to be one step ahead of them.

If they're all sitting on their base Magic Resists, which is highly unlikely, you could consider grabbing a 3089.pnginstead. I'd still go with 3135.png regardless though, they could still buy magic resist before you complete 3089.png3135.png is still very effective against low magic resist targets.

Finish build with 3089.png and 2139.png.

SITUATIONAL ITEMS

3001.png build this over 3100.png if you need the extra survivability against magic damage. I usually find 3157.png's active, 3111.png and 38.png's passive kassadinpassive.png enough. Very rarely will I actually build 3001.png.

3165.png can be built in place of 3027.png or 3100.png. Built even more rarely. I value RoA's tank stats, and Lich Bane's passive much more. Really only useful if you absolutely need the Grievous Wounds. If you need it, then your ADC should be buying 3033.png as well. If they're too poor to afford 3033.png, I guess it's a decent buy.

3030.png vs 3027.png. I haven't done too much testing. I'm just gonna leave it as a personal preference thing. I prefer 3027.png just because it gives more total HP and AP.

Feel free to buy 3041_32.png early if you're snowballing like crazy...I guess.

VS

Ahri

Medium

Most Ahri's will just push you in with constant ahriorbofdeception.png's. Just poke her down and you can kill her after she throws out ahriseduce.png or ahriorbofdeception.png.

VS

Akali

Easy

You both have fairly weak lane phases, but her's is weaker. Literally just spam abilities on her and you'll win lol.

VS

Anivia

Easy

Dodge her flashfrost.png's and you'll be good. Try to save nulllance.png for right when she starts glacialstorm.png. It'll be an easy lane.

VS

Annie

Easy

She's so predictable. Trade nulllance.pngdisintegrate.png's and you'll come out on top easily.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy

I have yet to face a good Sol player so this is just based off my own experiences. It's an easy lane.

VS

Azir

Easy

He can zone you off creeps with his soldiers, but against the average Azir, this matchup is really easy. Avoid the Shurima Shuffle and he's donezo.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Can be annoying matchup. I feel like after some good poking, you can win the level 6 all in.

VS

Corki

Easy

Another lane where you'll farm under turret while poking pre-6, then easy kill post-6.

VS

Diana

Easy

Easy. Try to time your nulllance.png poke when her dianaorbs.png runs out. She gets dumpstered because you can netherblade.png her and have your own shield as well.

VS

Ekko

Easy

You dumpster this kid. Really straight forward.

VS

Fizz

Medium

I haven't really played this matchup too much recently. I just ban this fucker tbh. This champion has always been cancer to me. Anyways, I guess it's winnable, but his fizzw.png is pretty broken, and he can dodge everything you have with fizze.png. Not to mention he doesn't even need items to kill you. It's about even matchup, with Fizz having a slight edge. If you're a much better player you'll win though.

VS

Irelia

Medium

Susceptible to ganks. Will probably have to give up a lot of farm. Just hope she'll let you farm under tower. Pay attention to your minion HP, because she'll use it to jump on you with ireliagatotsu.png into ireliaequilibriumstrike.png.

VS

Jayce

Medium

Can be annoying. Respect his damage and poke. Don't step to far too farm, give some cs up if you have to. Should be fine if you just farm under turret. Maybe start 1029.png

VS

Karthus

Easy
30.png is just gonna farm lol. Could max nulllance.png and forcepulse.png evenly or just max forcepulse.png if you want because he's really spammy.

VS

Kassadin

Easy

You'll rape him since you read this guide :D

VS

Katarina

Easy

I think Kassadin wins easily. Just try not to push too far

VS

LeBlanc

Easy

You dump on her pretty hard.

VS

Lulu

Medium

Not really a mid pick anymore but she's annoying. Be careful when jumping on her or into her team.

VS

Lux

Easy

Can be annoying early with luxlightstrikekugel.png auto proccing Thunderlord's. Post-6 is easy win.

VS

Orianna

Medium

A good 61.png will be hard to deal with. Let her push you into tower. She's susceptible to being ganked so hopefully your jungler shows up.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

If this happens, dodge.

VS

Ryze

Easy

Ryze is pretty weak now tbh. I highly doubt you'll be playing against a good Ryze player, should be a easy matchup. Just stay away from your minions when he farms with ryzee.png and ryzeqwrapper.png.

VS

Swain

Easy

Might need 14.png. You have better poke so just wear him down and you'll win.

VS

Syndra

Medium

You'll be fine as long as she doesn't land every syndraq.png, and even then you can trade pretty well with her. Always get 3111.png here. If you ever plan on going for an all-in, make sure to do so when she has no Sphere's already on the ground near her.

VS

Taliyah

Easy

She'll probably just try to shove into your turret hard. Jump on her when she tries to farm.

VS

Talon

Hard

I haven't laned against one yet actually. I don't expect it to be an easy matchup at all though. Tbh I would dodge or ask for a lot of help from your jungler.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

This is actually the easiest matchup. Post-6 just ward middle of lane or in the walkways of mid to top/bot to see where he wants to roam. Don't let him ult and keep lots of pressure on him. If he's able to ult to a sidelane, follow up with your own 12.png.

It's obvious but Riftwalk in on him whenever he throws his pickacard.png.

VS

Veigar

Easy

Poke with Q. Easy lane. Dodge his cage with R and you win the lane easily. He can't do anything when you get in his face.

VS

Viktor

Easy

Easy kill after 6. Can trade with you pretty well Pre-6 though.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

Just don't let him Q you with his Crimson Rush thing. He can sustain your Q poke, but he can't really force you out of lane. A good Vlad could be hard to kill, but he shouldn't be able to kill you.

VS

Xerath

Medium

This is mostly just a skill matchup early game, he can be annoying. 3111.png and you should be able to jump on him.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Max forcepulse.pngnulllance.png him whenever his passive is up to either break shield, or force the windwall. Windwall doesn't block your forcepulse.png. Hit him with netherblade.png whenever he wants to trade. Should be a fairly easy lane. You could consider going Thunderlord's since you could easily proc it in lane, and get short trades in.

VS

Zed

Medium

Easy lane as long as you dodge his zedw.pngzede.pngzedq.png combos. Get 3157.png after 3027.png if he's giving you a hard time.

VS

Ziggs

Easy

He's probably going to be pushing you into tower. Easy ganks. Ward middle of lane to see if he moves to roam. He'll probably just farm from afar with abilities once you hit 6. Punish him if he ever gets too close.

VS

Zilean

Medium

I've actually always struggled whenever I laned against this guy. He'll just slow you even if he misses his double bomb. Can't really do much to him.

About the Author Back to Top

Thanks for checking out the guide! I'm Attack, currently a Platinum mid main on NA. I've hit Diamond as a 112.png main in Season 5, then took a break from league for almost all of Season 6. 112.png is considered pretty weak nowadays so I had to fall back on my old main, 38.png. He was my most played champion in Season 4, and has since been one of my favorite pocket picks. Decided to pick him back up recently and he's been extremely strong. I've found a lot of success on him so far, and with his recent (and unfortunate) rise in popularity, I decided to update this guide on how I think he's best built and played.
