Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png FLASH [Irreplaceable]

  • Standard escape pre-6 and to carry it with your Riftwalk
  • Overall good offensive and defensive ability in any situation

12.png TELEPORT [Recommended]

  • Useful tool to use if you get harassed out of lane
  • Able to apply global pressure for TP ganks or as a safety net to split push
  • Potential to backdoor (Xpeke)

14.png IGNITE [Aggressive Secondary Replacement]

  • Good to secure kills, but you sacrifice the chance to come back to lane after being harassed out of it
  • High risk; high reward
  • Overkill on damage specifically for Kassadin

3.png EXHAUST [Defensive Secondary Replacement]

  • Situational choice against high kill threat matchups like 238.png or 91.png
  • Not very optimal on an assassin as you won't utilize it as much as you would want to
  • I would still take TP even in these kinds of matchups, but that's due to experience

6.png21.png1.png7.png11.png

  • Specifically for Kassadin you won't be utilizing any of these to their fullest
  • Each are situational in there own perspective, but will not benefit Kassadins play style in the slightest
  • You can jungle but it's not great

New Runes Back to Top

SORCERY PATH (Primary)

Keystone: Summon Aery
Summon%20Aerie.png?width=64
Although the scaling and base damage might be low, the guaranteed damage it applies with a very low cooldown helps Kassadin's early game tremendously. With a relatively lower cooldown, by the time your Q is off cooldown you will be able to proc it again. Just simply adds to your poke damage while spamming your Q so this just assists your already weak early game in general.

Honorable Mentions:
  • Arcane%20Comet.png?width=32Arcane Comet - While it seems good on paper, in Kassadins view, this is very hard to apply efficiently. Since the missile speed is slow, you would need to apply it first with your Force Pulse to guarantee a hit but thats just too inefficient for your early game. The scaling is good but it won't be useful to you in the early game compared to Aery.
  • Phase%20Rush.png?width=32Phase Rush - Something that also seems good in theory, but you already have enough mobility as is. This is just a steroid version of Stormraiders Surge back in Season 7 that we still did not use. It's cool to move fast, but you're not really benefitting much from the speed since you're already mobile with Riftwalk.
  • Electrocute.png?width=32Electorcute - I think this should be mentioned as there is a lot of controversy regarding the previous Thunderlords and the current new rune Electrocute to be implemented as Kassadin's main keystone. On paper it seems amazing as you're obviously a burst-melee-assassin that can reliably close the gap "post-6" however numbers aren't everything. Just because this does a good amount of damage that scales doesn't mean it's a reliable rune to take on Kassadin specifically. With Kassadin's already weak pre-6 early game, it would be a miracle to even proc this once without being punished; even post-6 this could be debatable. With a cooldown of 50-25s based on level, this is just an inefficient rune to take. Not only is it inefficient alone, but the Domination Path as a main route is just isn't that great for Kassadin in general. The only remarkable rune would be sudden impact, however, you'd be pretty much wasting 2 other major runes that could help you a lot more in the Sorcery Path. You have to compliment Kassadins early game and not completely ignore it. Arguably you could say that you can play passive and stay alive levels 1-6, but you'd be conceding your potential early game dominance that Aery could've given you. When the DFT meta for Kassadin was made, it's what actually put him back on the board since it gave him that early game dominance he desperately needed; same idea with Aery and the later explained rune Scorch, these just give Kassadin his needed early game assistance that can then segue him into the mid-late game where he already has insane burst damage without "Electrocute".

Artifact: The Ultimate Hat
The%20Ultimate%20Hat.png?width=64
This is very easy to max as Kassadin since you do spam your Riftwalk occasionally throughout the game. With this maxed, 3 levels on Riftwalk, and applying it to my build, you're looking at a 1.02 second CD which is insane.

Honorable Mentions:
  • Nullifying%20Orb.png?width=32 Nullifying Orb - Fairly good against an AP matchup you would feel you'd need the magic shield on. This is a very defensive choice that I'd recommend to those that don't have enough experience on Kassadin and/or a multitude of AP matchups.
  • Manaflow%20Band.png?width=32 Manaflow Band - A very consistent rune that helps with your mana sustain and potentially late game 4th stack Riftwalks, however, later down the line of my explanations of rune choices this would be obsolete in comparison. Not a bad choice for laning, but not that great either for Kassadins sake.

Excellence: Transcendence
Transcendence.png?width=64
Cooldown reduction is very good on Kassadin since using abilities as much as possible brings him to his limit or even break it at that point. Getting a free 10% CDR at level 10 which then transfers excess CDR at cap to 20 AP makes this rune exceptional for Kassadin.

Honorable Mentions:
  • Celerity.png?width=32 Celerity - As you guys may know I was very fond of Movement Speed Quints back in Season 7 as it gave Kassadin needed mobility throughout the game and it felt very good, however, as new runes are introduced so are new ways of playing champions. What this provides isn't bad as tested, but when comparing Transcendence and this, it just felt underwhelming. You get at most 7 AP with my build as a solid 425 MS while you can still get 400+ MS without this which is good enough. Just lack-luster in my opinion for Kassadin.
  • Absolute%20Focus.png?width=32 Absolute Focus - This is good if you can even maintain above 70% HP at all times with a melee-caster-assassin such as Kassadin. You're squishy and you most likely will go in utilizing at max 40 AP that this offers which doesn't really feel like anything in the late game. Good on paper bad in practice.

Power: Scorch
Scorch.png?width=64
The better version of the old mastery Deathfire Touch. Just at a glance it seems bad because of the cooldown, however, it's actually a fairly better version of DFT. Before you used to do peanut damage overtime that scaled into the late game maxing at about 75 damage. Now it does a base 30-60 based on level instantly after 1s instead of DoT. Yes, the downside would be the 20s cooldown, but that's a small price to pay for something so good especially for Kassadin. Proccing this is very easy and this paired with Aery helps Kassadins early game tremendously.

Honorable Mentions:
  • Waterwalking.png?width=32 Waterwalking - Once you acquire you Riftwalk, this can definitely help your roaming to the side lanes a lot more, however, taking this means giving up lane dominance with Scorch. You would have to be able to roam in the first place without getting punished to make this rune even close to efficient. Definitely a good choice if against an opponent you can abuse then roam to press your advantage, but I'd rather stick with Scorch since you can essentially do the same thing but with added lane dominance.
  • Gathering%20Storm.png?width=32 Gathering Storm - This a very controversial rune that gives people an illusion that I have to argue about. At the moment, Season 8 has been one where games on average last about 20-25 minutes now compared to before with 35+ minutes games. In an ideal situation, you'd want to hit the 40 minute mark to get that beautiful 80 AP, but realistically you'd get at least 24 AP at the 20 minute mark. We know Kassadin is all about the late game, but most of the time you're not even going to hit a point in the game to make this even noticeable. Sacrificing Scorch for this would mean wanting to farm up to the "late game". Arguably you could take this in a matchup such as 236.png or 80.png where you would be forced to sit back and scavenge farm while Gathering Storm does it's intended work of giving you AP as the game goes on.

PRECISION PATH (Secondary)

Secondary #1: Presence of Mind
Presence%20of%20Mind.png?width=64
This was made for Kassadin. 5 seconds of raw-unpunished-spammable Riftwalking is a dream come true. Let's start with the early game: Every level-up gives you the opportunity to blow your load of abilities without suffering from the mana consumption of doing so. Post-6 can benefit you greatly as you can Riftwalk freely or combo people at times where you would've needed that mana later on but still redeemed it through its effect. Late game is where this rune truly shines and should be feared upon. You can REALISTICALLY spam your 4th stack Riftwalk without the huge mana punishment for the next 5 seconds, but lets not forget that on each takedown it resets so this has infinite possibilities.

Secondary #2: Coup De Grace
Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=64
A 10% increase in damage to below half HP targets is very good for an assassin such as Kassadin. This pretty much ensures an enemies death most of the time as it's very noticeable. Just to add on to the extra damage it also gives you an AP bonus on takedown for 10 seconds so you can deal a bit more damage after the fact.

DOMINATION PATH (2nd Path Substitute)

The Domination path is pretty good and has some runes that can give Kassadin a little more impact to the game. A good substitute if you don't feel like using my Precision path. I'd recommend this path if up against a very squishy enemy team composition, but I still feel like losing out on Presence of Mind and Coup De Grace is a fairly big loss.

Secondary #1: Sudden Impact
Sudden%20Impact.png?width=64
Post-6 this definitely shows promise throughout the game. The extra magic penetration this gives adds a good amount to your burst damage. In a 20 minute game this can average around 1500 base damage with this rune alone which is very good. An average teamfight scenario would have this do around 300-500 damage. Proccing this is easy as you do Riftwalk a lot and the 4 second CD with the 5 second duration pretty much makes this unlimited. A good choice into squishy enemy team comps.

Secondary #2: Eyeball Collection
Eyeball%20Collection.png?width=64
A self-explanatory rune choice that helps Kassadin scale a bit faster than usual. Maxing at 30 AP makes this rune fairly impactful. Completing your collection isn't hard since getting takedowns and ward kills can be achieved with not much effort.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SORCERY + RESOLVE PATH (Defensive Option)

Alternatively if you're against a high threat opponent that will give you no breathing room; most likely 236.png/126.png/80.png/etc..., this choice of runes will benefit you and help you survive throughout the laning phase. This is highly recommended to use against AD match ups but can also be optionally used against some high-harass AP match ups as well if need be. Please remember that this is a highly passive rune page that requires you to play as passive as possible. Explaining the Resolve Path later, with similarities to our primary rune page there are some changes in the Sorcery path:

Artifact: Manaflow Band (Ultimate Hat replacement)
The%20Ultimate%20Hat.png?width=32 > Manaflow%20Band.png?width=64
The reason why we replace the renowned Ultimate Hat with Manaflow Band is to focus on lane sustain rather than greed scaling. It is true that the Hat goes very well with Kassadin's Riftwalk ultimate, but instead of being greedy we should focus on actually surviving and sustaining in lane. Manaflow provides that extra mana sustain needed to survive and farm in the laning phase for as long as possible. You will be pressured enough to where you need to last hit from a distance with your Null Sphere in order to get some form of income and even then you will most likely be punished doing so. Having a free ability cast every minute would just be beneficial overall.

Since we are going into the Resolve Path, Presence of Mind won't be in our arsenal anymore so this is where Manaflow Band comes into play. With the loss of PoM, Manaflow Band takes its place as a lower form of potentially saving a good amount of mana for an ability in the late game such as 4th stack Riftwalks if times correctly.

Power: Gathering Storm (Scorch replacement)
Scorch.png?width=32 > Gathering%20Storm.png?width=64
Trying to utilize scorch will just harm you rather than benefit you in the lane. By the time you try to apply Scorch, you're opponent will hit you 10x harder. Knowing this, we will be replacing it with Gathering Storm since all we're trying to do is survive and scale. Generating some free AP as the game goes on gives you incentive to play the game out even if you're getting dominated in lane. Kassadin is renowned for being a late game monster so if you manage to get there with this rune equipped then you should be in a good spot to outscale the enemy.

Secondary #1: Iron Skin or Mirror Shell
Iron%20Skin.png?width=64 / Mirror%20Shell.png?width=64
Since we'll be running this rune page for AD defense, taking Iron Skin is the primary choice here, however, you can alternatively choose Mirror Shell is you feel that you need the magic resist against AP matchups. This rune is self-explanatory as we would need the selective defense according to matchup. Looking at the extra effects, the extra healing is nice, but the main feature would be the increase in resistances when you get shielded; this applies with your Null Sphere magic shield giving you just a little bit more resistance when using your Q.

Secondary #2: Second Wind
Second%20Wind.png?width=64
This is comparable to the old mastery Fearless giving you resistances when damaged, however, Second Wind actually heals you when damaged with no cooldown. This is extremely useful against high-harass matchups that give you a hard time with constant damage output. Basically just helps you sustain in lane for a while longer.

Standard | Q Max Order: riftwalk.png>nulllance.png>forcepulse.png>netherblade.png

  • Q for poking and mitigating magic damage
  • Maintain lane dominance
  • Capable of harassing without getting punished more than what you deal
  • Scaling E wave-clear starting in the mid game
  • Q ranged travel time to guarantee a single-target nuke hit

Non-Aggression | E Max Order: riftwalk.png>forcepulse.png>nulllance.png>netherblade.png

  • Mainly against extremely hard matchups that either perma-push you into turret or make your Q useless
  • Early E max to wave clear more efficiently as you're pushed in
  • Level 1 Q, level 2 W, afterwards focus on E
  • Strictly use your Q to last hit and not poke
  • Safe play style as you will almost never be pushed up your lane
  • Setup easy ganks with your early leveled slow percentage
  • E does have a little higher base damage compared to Q early levels and +50 longer range with a lower CD
  • If chances are given use E aggressively for poke
Passive: Void Stone                                                                                                                                      kassadinpassive.png
INNATE: No unit collision and takes 15% reduced magic damage

In my opinion one of the most OP passives in the game and shouldn't be taken lightly. The fact that you have zero unit collision is huge. I know everyone hates getting minion blocked or even champion blocked which then screws up their pathing and something problematic happens. This is never the case with Kassadin since he fazes through any unit. As for the second part, the 15% reduced magic damage is incredibly noticeable early game. This reduced magic damage is pretty much running 12 magic resist blues as your runes so it's perfect for Kassadin since he's a melee mage.

Q: Null Sphere                                                                                                                                               nulllance.png
RANGE: 650
SPEED: 1400
COST: 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90 MANA
  • COOLDOWN: 9
  • MAGIC DAMAGE: 65 / 95 / 125 / 155 / 185 (+ 70% AP)
  • SHIELD: 40 / 70 / 100 / 130 / 160 (+ 30% AP)

Pairing with his passive, this ability is what makes Kassadin titled as an "Anti-Mage". Being a reliable single-target nuke/harass tool, the magic shield it brings is quite useful in most cases if used correctly and timely. It can mitigate a very crucial magic ability that could've otherwise been your demise. It's something to get used to since most people just spam it to poke without realizing its second effect that could've been used to avoid unnecessary damage. And lets not forget that this can also cancel channeling abilities from champs such as 136.png/9.png/55.png/90.png/etc...

W: Nether Blade                                                                                                                                            netherblade.png
COOLDOWN: 7
PASSIVE: Basic attacks deal 20 (+ 10% AP) bonus magic damage
  • INCREASED BONUS MAGIC DAMAGE: 40 / 65 / 90 / 115 / 140 (+ 70% AP)
  • MANA RESTORED: 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8% missing mana

A 1 point wonder ability that is useful in all aspects. Not only does this cost no mana , the on-hit extra damage it does on an AA helps with farming and melee dueling. It gives you an instant AA reset that can combine well with your upfront damage combo. Aside from its damage, one of the major functions of this is the mana restoration. This can be a life saver and a play maker at times as it also gives quintuple the amount of percent mana restored if you hit an enemy champion.

E: Force Pulse                                                                                                                                                forcepulse.png
RANGE: 700
COST: 60 / 65 / 70 / 75 / 80 MANA + 6 CHARGES
  • COOLDOWN: 5
  • MAGIC DAMAGE: 80 / 105 / 130 / 155 / 180 (+ 70% AP)
  • SLOW: 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90%

Your primary CC/wave clear tool. With the same scaling as your Q it's a good all-rounder. Charging this ability isn't as hard as you might think because not only you buy everyone around you can charge it with their abilities. With its short CD this can be abused quite easily in the middle of a team fight and the slow applied is very powerful.

R: Riftwalk                                                                                                                                                    riftwalk.png
RANGE: 500
COST: 50 / 100 / 200 / 400 / 800 MANA
  • COOLDOWN: 6 / 4 / 2
  • MAGIC DAMAGE: 80 / 100 / 120 (+ 30% AP) (+ 2% maximum mana)
  • BONUS DAMAGE PER STACK: 40 / 50 / 60 (+ 10% AP) (+ 1% maximum mana)

Kassadins bread and butter. A blink that can be used in an aggressive manner to close the gap or a defensive mechanism to escape, but what makes this ability truly shine is actually blinking onto a target to apply its insane damage output when stacked. Charging up to 4 times whilst the mana being doubled on each cast makes or breaks a Kassadin player.

Combos:

You can mix and match depending on the situation and Riftwalk stacks can have the combos vary in damage output.

Passive

UNIQUE - DREAD: Grants +3 ability power per stack of Glory.
UNIQUE - DO OR DIE: rants 2 Glory (+6 AP) for a champion kill and 1 Glory (+3 AP) for an assist, up to a maximum of 10 Glory stacks (+30 AP).

Upon death, lose 4 Glory stacks (-12 AP).

The cost-efficiency of this item is insane. The base stats are good overall as it increases both sustain and damage. Aside from that the passive gives you some snowball boost if you do get some assists/kills early. One of the biggest points of this buy is the selling price of 245 gold which is higher than any other starting item you could buy. With its cheap buying price pairing with the Refillable Potion makes this the most cost-efficient purchase.

EARLY PURCHASES:

2033.png/1001.png/1028.png/1027.png

If you're having trouble in lane, grabbing a Corrupting Potion upgrade is beneficial as it can help sustain you at least through the laning phase. Other than that, your typical early purchases should focus on Ruby/Sapphire crystal to build up to your Catalyst; grabbing Ruby for it's extra HP beefiness should be first in the recipe.

3010.png/1026.png

Your typical early purchase should aim towards a Catalyst to help you survive in lane a bit longer, but if you're ahead and confident in your abilities then prioritizing a Blasting Wand is beneficial for you to push your advantage against your opponent.

3111.png/3047.png

Early boot purchases are pretty good on Kassadin especially with the MS Quints you'll be running with my build as it can drastically increase your mobility which can help you maneuver a lot faster. In terms of which boot to purchase really depends on what matchup you're up against both in lane and comp wise. If you're up against an AP mid or just a lot of CC then Mercs would be a good choice, but if you're against an AD mid or just typical AD comps then Tabi would be your other choice.

3191.png

If you're against an AD matchup then rush this. You'll need all the armor you can get early to mitigate the heavy damage they deal to you.

1057.png

Wouldn't recommend buying this, but if you are having extreme troubles in staying alive in lane against a mage then this isn't a bad buy, however, it does slow down your damage a lot. When you do buy this do not complete it; this is more of a defensive early item that should be sold later.

(Stopwatch Placeholder)

For 600 gold this item is fairly decent in a desperate situation. In the mid-game grabbing this could be game changing as if you have an early Hourglass, however, you don't gain any stats from it so 600 gold could be asking for too much at the time which could be used for more crucial build ups for items. Definitely a situational buy but not bad at all.

3364.png

As an assassin this trinket gives you vision control and helps you roam much more efficiently while denying enemy vision. Arguably you could take 3363.png if you want some information on enemy movement or for objective vision but I feel as an assassin, denying vision is extremely important so you can flank more efficiently.

DO NO FORGET TO BUY 2055.png WHENEVER YOU GET THE CHANCE FOR VISION CONTROL

CORE ITEMS:

3027.png

This is the 1st of the 2 items that spikes your damage and utility. A core item that is considerably good on Kassadin that gives him both sustain and scaling damage. The build up is fairly efficient as it's not too expensive and the recalled buys are decent enough to give you beefiness and/or damage. The extra HP/MANA pool helps you stay in fights longer and gives you more options with your abilities.

3165.png

The 2nd item that smooths out your mid game. The build up to this is very cost-efficient as the items aren't awkward to buy. Aside from the beneficial stats, the major function of this item are the passives of both restoring a good chunk of your mana off assists/kills and the Grievous Wounds that negates a percentage of healing. These help you out in both assassinating and team fighting. Going more into the mana part, it's such a huge game changer in team fighting situations. Potentially you can 4th stack Riftwalk repeatedly to decimate the enemy team. Overall good item.

3100.png

The start of your snowball in damage. With this your upfront combo combined with your W can delete an enemy carry or at least chunk them enough to be setup for a kill. The extra movement speed is quite useful in roaming as well.

3157.png

The best item for Kassadin since you're a melee mage assassin. This is the play maker that changes the flow of fights in an instant. With this you can instigate fights without the worry of getting punished after you Riftwalk. Potentially you can waste crucial abilities if timed correctly that could've otherwise been your demise.

3135.png

Most likely the enemy team will be building some form of magic resist so this is standard for a mage. Helps out for your damage overall. Depending on the situation this could be bought earlier or later as a 3rd or 4th item if the enemy is rushing a ton of MR or slowly working up to it mid/late game.

3089.png

While the more AP the better is tempting for all AP casters, this is more of a luxury item for Kassadin than a must-buy. Void Staff should almost-always be your final purchase, but if the enemy team has close to no magic resist then buying this would give you A LOT more damage than you would have with Void Staff.

SITUATIONAL:

3139.png

I rarely find myself getting this item, but in some cases it can be a game changer as the enemy would want to lock you down and kill you as fast as possible. If you're against high amounts of CC that can lock you down to the point of certain death than this would be a beneficial item to save your life. This would replace your 6th item slot between your Void Staff/Deathcap depending on the situation.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

3030.png

Similar to RoA, but generally not a good item for Kassadin. Again you won't be utilizing the health and passive to its fullest as you are not a fighter. The active damage is unnecessary in 2 ways: 1) The extra wave-clear assist is unneeded as you already have sufficient wave-clear, 2) Adding this into your combo makes for an awkward sequence as the channel time can put you into a grave situation. Kassadin needs to be swift and this puts a small detriment on his capabilities. This item is useful on champs like 136.png/50.png to utilize its passive to stay in the fight and active to apply an AoE slow.

3152.png

Same reasoning behind the GLP, you are getting less bang for your buck. What you're getting isn't worth it for what you could be getting from your other core items. This is mainly good for champs like 245.png/105.png who can really take advantage on what the item offers as they work well with their kits.

3048.png

Too slow of an item to build and you lose ouit on so much damage in the early/mid game. If you know how to maintain your mana especially with Riftwalk than this is unnecessary. Yes the mana and the shield with the extra AP it gives is useful but it's too slow of an item and by the time you get it maxed out, you would have already either won or lost the game. I have had no issues maintaining my mana with my current build, but I would be lying if I said I never needed the shield to save me though those situations are rare to come by since you would be mobile enough to get away in those times.

3285.png

In theory this is a good item, but is only useful on champs like 99.png/134.png/101.png who are long-ranged and can take advantage of the splash damage consistently. On Kassadin if you can repeatedly get close enough to use your E or even a Q without getting punished than in a certain play style I can see it working, but most of the time it's really not worth it for what you're buying.

3102.png

This is probably the only item I would suggest in very strict situations as it can prevent certain death, but you would be sacrificing a good amount of damage if you were to get this and not let's say a Rabadon's or 1 of the items we have listed as core. It really depends on playstyle and situation oriented purposes. It can do fairly well if up against a lot of single-target CC or just CC in general, but if you get in those kinds of situations then you are kind of playing Kassadin wrong.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With Kassadin you want to be as cost-efficient as possible in the early/mid game as you are very item dependent. This build takes that to the fullest so you don't lose out on anything important to your scaling. Sacrificing HP for pure damage is a small price to pay to be a big threat to the enemy team and take Kassadin to his limits.

VS

Aatrox

Medium
Pre-6:
  • Play passive/aggressive and harass/last hit with Q
  • Avoid his all-ins
  • Farm what you can
  • If he engages on you, trade with E>Q>AA>W
Post-6:
  • Use Riftwalk sparingly so you don't misposition yourself to get knocked up by him
  • E>Q>AA>W when in range and add a Riftwalk in there if he used his gap close already
  • He'll be either building full damage or MR specifically against you, regardless you can outplay him as long as you don't get his by his Q
  • Distance yourself and dodge his Q as you duel him since he's melee

VS

Ahri

Medium
Pre-6:
  • Harass with Q as much as possible
  • Dodge/utilize Q magic shield
  • Don't forget to focus on farm
  • You will be pressured a lot and be put under turret
  • Try to stay alive until 6
Post-6:
  • Gap close with a R>E>Q combo to trade, but make sure to dodge her charm
  • Don't try to brute force duel her as she has more DPS than you
  • Quick harass bursts is what puts you on top
  • Be careful to not be out of position for her to all-in you
  • If the chance comes and she uses her E, all-in and punish her

VS

Akali

Easy
Pre-6:
  • Harass constantly with Q
  • Careful not to be in melee range as she can burst you quickly
  • If you are melee range trade with E>Q>AA>W variants
  • When shrouded keep your distance and prepare to trade or simply Q here if seen
  • Mitigate some damage with Q
  • Use your W as much as possible as she will be in melee range most of the time
Post-6:
  • Keep your distance and don't prolong a duel
  • Play passive/aggressive and do quick burst combos of R>E>Q
  • Don't Riftwalk immaturely as it's your main form of escaping her gap close

VS

Anivia

Easy
Pre-6:
  • Harass constantly with Q
  • Mitigate damage with Q
  • Dodge her stun which is fairly easy
  • Acquire lane dominance but be careful of where your wave is pushing
Post-6:
  • Do straight all-ins whenever possible with an E>Q>R>AA>W or you can do quick bursts of R>E>Q
  • You can cancel your ult with your Q
  • Be aware of the map so you don't put yourself in danger when all-inning
  • Dodge her Q's and you win
  • Whenever Q is used punish her

VS

Annie

Easy
Pre-6:
  • Harass with Q and mitigate her trades
  • Watch out for her stun charges as they can setup for easy jungle ganks on yourself
  • Don't try to harass when she has her stun up
  • Watch her stun charges so you don't get in range for a preemptive strike
  • Acquire as much lane dominance as possible
Post-6:
  • Quick harass bursts of R>E>Q
  • Be wary of Tibbers combo, same thing as for watching her stun chrages
  • Just harass and try to go for kills on her whenever possible
  • Be aware of the map so you don't put yourself in a bad situation
  • When stun charges reset, all-in when you can

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy
Pre-6:
  • Harass with Q and mitigate damage
  • When your Q is down distance yourself as to not get poked down for free
  • Your Q can cancel his W toggle for a split-second
  • He will push your lane constantly and try to roam, counter push when possible
  • Dodge his Q's to win the trades
  • Melee range isn't as bad since you can W and take advantage of your AA's
Post-6:
  • He will most likely push you then roam when he can so always try to shove into him and roam yourself
  • When dueling, all-ins are in your favor as he's only useful in damage when he distances himself
  • Quick bursts of R>E>Q are optimal
  • Punish him by all-inning after he uses his Q

VS

Azir

Medium
Pre-6:
  • Poke with Q when possible
  • Watch for his soldiers as to not get poked down too much
  • Focus on farm mainly as he distances himself a lot
  • If he all-ins you, trade with E>Q>AA>W you will come out on top most of the time
Post-6:
  • Try not to be in tower range when pushing as he can push you into his turret with his ult
  • When you see him use his Q or E its important to punish him with R>E>Q or a straight up all-in
  • Don't be too afraid of his soldiers as he needs them on you to do damage so Riftwalk out of range and keeping up DPS while dodging soldiers

VS

Brand

Easy
Pre-6:
  • Poke with Q when possible and mitigate damage
  • Keep your distance as to not get harassed to death
  • Focus on farm mainly as his range outranges yours
  • When blazed try to dodge his Q as best as possible
Post-6:
  • Maneuver around with R whilst bursting with E>Q
  • Dodge stun combos and stray away from minions so his ult doesn't bounce towards you repeatedly
  • Riftwalk out of range of your minions and apply damage to him
  • Always try to his Q magic shield to lower damage on yourself

VS

Camille

Hard
Pre-6:
  • Poke with Q and refrain from getting into melee range
  • Avoid her E all-ins otherwise you'll be punished hard
  • When she activates her passive you can either burst through it or distance yourself until it's gone to proceed doing damage
  • Try to focus on farm and dodge her E's as it is her main form of amplifying her damage
Post-6:
  • It's best to wait for ganks and not to try to be ambitious against her
  • Avoid fights and focus on farm or pushing your lane to roam
  • Try to not be in a bad positon for her to ult you and it can completely nullify your Riftwalk putting you in a vulnerable spot
  • Dodge E's and keep your distance

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium
Pre-6:
  • Use Q to last hit or mitigate damage as much as possible
  • Play very passive and keep distance as to not get harassed to death
  • Focus on farm and don't try to poke as she can heavily punish you if you do so
  • Careful not to be in her W as it will make your Flash unusable
  • Let her push you in and farm under turret
Post-6:
  • You can try to R>E>Q for quick burst damage and running away immediately, but be quick
  • Be careful not to be in her W as it renders your Riftwalk and Flash useless
  • Make sure to be mobile when fighting her and turning away from her R to not get stunned
  • Strongly advised to keep distance and play safe, push your lane when possible to leave and roam

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy
Pre-6:

  • Utilize W when given the chance in melee range

Post-6:
  • Maneuver around and do quick bursts of R>E>Q so the silence takes affect after your initial combo
  • Be very mobile and dodge whatever you can
  • When he uses either Q or W try to all-in and punish
  • Careful for his ult as it does do a chunk of damage so keep in mind of your health

VS

Pre-6:
  • Poke with Q and mitigate some damage
  • Focus on farm mainly as he does have damage and range advantage over you
  • You have to concede some farm as he can harass you down easily
Post-6:
  • Don't try to do quick bursts or all-ins as he can punish you gravely
  • If you see him use W take the chance to R>E>Q
  • It's best to play passive and only aggressive when chances are given
  • Focus on farm and pushing wave when possible

  • Keep your distance and harass with Q
  • Never get into melee range
  • If you ever get into melee range try to trade with whatever you have while running
  • Focus on farm and let the wave push towards you

  • Harass with Q and mitigate damage
  • He has better dueling so let him push
  • You may have to concede farm
  • Refrain from being in melee range
  • Dodge Q's
  • If in melee range trade with E>Q>AA>W
Post-6:
  • You out trade him most of the time but don't prolong a melee fight
  • Keep distance and combo whenever you can
  • Use Riftwalk to distance yourself or close the gap if you see the chance to all-in
  • He may be building MR but you still do a good amount of damage to him
  • Don't be afraid to be ambitious

VS

Ekko

Easy
Pre-6:
  • Harass with Q and mitigate damage
  • Dodge Q's and W's
  • If he E's onto you, full combo him with an E>Q>AA>W or some variant
  • He'll be pushing you under tower most of the time so focus on farm mainly
  • Try not to get 3 stacked from his passive as it does a ton of damage
Post-6:
  • Harass as much as possible and using a quick burst of R>E>Q is beneficial
  • Avoid 3 stack combos as it will decimate you
  • Be mobile and maneuver around his Q/W/R
  • Watch for his ult trail

  • His all-ins are strong so dodge as much as possible
  • If he used E then punish him with a E>Q and add a AA+W if in melee
  • You may have to concede CS

  • Try to do quick bursts of R>E>Q but sometimes you have to save RIftwalk to escpae
  • His DPS is a threat so avoid prolonged fights
  • He will most likely look to shove wave all the time so don't forget the farm
  • Avoid getting hit by his ult
  • He will mainly ult the wave to shove you in
  • Focus on farm and find chances to burst

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy
Pre-6:
  • Harass as much as possible and mitigate damage with Q
  • Your Q cancels his W so use it sparingly in some cases
  • Try not to be pushed up against him as his fear can set you up to get ganked
Post-6:
  • Play hyper-aggressive, but keep in mind of his fear
  • Sometimes saving Q in your initial combo to stop his W is a good idea
  • Keep goo vision as you don't want him ulting you or roaming to your teammates out of no where

VS

Fiora

Hard
Pre-6:
  • Don't ever be in melee range
  • You can poke with Q but keep distance
  • If in melee range use a E>Q>AA>W or some variant
  • Focus on farm as you will get zoned
  • Sacrificing a lot of farm is normal in this matchup
Post-6:
  • Play passive and don't be ambitious
  • Her dueling and gap closing is dangerous and shouldn't be taken lightly
  • Strictly use Riftwalk to escape
  • Try to stay alive and focus on farm

VS

Fizz

Easy
Pre-6:
  • Harass with Q but keep in mind that his E nullifies anything that comes at him
  • Mitigate damage with Q
  • If in melee range utilize W or combo with E>Q>AA>W though do it in segments as he can E and dodge anything
  • If his E is down punish him as much as possible even if he all-ins you to trade
Post-6:
  • Dodge his ult by either side-stepping to Riftwalking, you don't want to be caught in it as it amplifies his all-in
  • Be wary of doing quick bursts as he can punish you for using your RIftwalk
  • Maneuver around as much as possible and be wary of his ult
  • You can opt to duel him repeatedly or shove wave and roam

VS

Galio

Medium
Pre-6:
  • Poke when possible but keep in mind his W can nullify your damage
  • Use Q to mitigate damage
  • If his W is down try to punish as much as possible
  • Focus on farm as this matchup is hard for you to do anything to him
  • Dodge what you can
Post-6:
  • Your Q can cancel his ult
  • Doing surprise quick bursts of R>E>Q is beneficial if he doesn't react in time to use W
  • Avoid being in melee range as it puts you in a vulnerable spot for him to ult you
  • He will mainly shove wave to roam so counter shove as much as possible
  • Use Riftwalk sparingly as he can punish you if you don't have it

VS

Gangplank

Medium
Pre-6:
  • Poke with Q when possible, but careful as he can trade the same way through your magic shield
  • Distance from barrels as they can punish you hard if hit
  • Focus on farm as it's pretty hard to poke without getting punished
  • Always keep in mind that he has his W which heals and removes CC

  • Use Riftwalk sparingly as he can heavily punish you if you are in melee range

  • You can do quick bursts of R>E>Q but do it when the chances arise especially when there are no barrels
  • When looking for finishers, keep in mind of his W

VS

Garen

Hard
Pre-6:
  • Poke with Q as much as possible when his W is down for maximum damage
  • Never be in melee range of him as he can punish you with a Q+E
  • He'll gradually become tanky so stop harassing when you see the damage being unnoticeable and focus on farm
  • If you know he'll be all-inning you, E+Q+AA+proc your W to trade as best as possible
Post-6:
  • If ever in melee range you'll be punished or even killed so be careful
  • Focus on farm and stay alive
  • He'll be tanky enough to mitigate a lot of your damage so it's best to distance yourself and wait for ganks
  • Always E and Riftwalk away if he's about to go in on you
  • Try to kite as much as possible
  • Your Q can mitigate some of his ult damage if you're not the villain, so try to time it

  • You can opt to poke him with Q if you can dodge her Q's or farm
  • It's best to play this as passive as possible as she can punish you very hard
  • Dodge anything you can especially her E
  • She will naturally push you into tower so focus on farm as best as possible
Post-6:
  • She will be tanky enough to shrug off your damage
  • NEVER be in melee range of her or you will regret it
  • Almost never try to 2v1 her with your jungler as she can turn around fights with her ult quick

VS

Jayce

  • Careful for polymorph as it can punish you
Post-6:
  • Quick bursts of R>E>Q or all-ins are optimal
  • Watch for her shields as they can negate a lot of damage
  • When Riftwalking aggressively careful for her polymorph
  • Always be mindful of her shields+Ult

VS

Lux

Easy
Pre-6:
  • Dodge whatever you can
  • Poke and mitigate damage with Q
  • Focus on farm as she can out range you
  • If she missed her Q, punish with E>Q
Post-6:

  • When Q's are missed, all-in with R>E>Q or E>Q>R>AA>W
  • Always try to avoid being hit at all
  • Be mindful of her W shield
  • Be ambitious but careful

VS

Malphite

Easy
Pre-6:
  • Harass and mitigate damage with Q
  • Apply lane dominance
  • If in melee utilize your W
  • E>Q>AA>W in in range to punish
Post-6:
  • He'll be stacking MR but you can still damage him
  • Same reasoning in pre-6 but with less damage
  • Avoid his ults as best as possible
  • You can opt to all in with E>Q>R>AA>W but be mindful of the situation as to not get combod
  • Riftwalk away to avoid ults

VS

Malzahar

Easy
Pre-6:
  • Harass and mitigate damage with Q as much as possible
  • Try to take out his passive shield to continue damage output
  • Avoid Q's and E bounces as to not get punished
  • Be mindful of voidlings as they can melt you down fast if in range
Post-6:
  • Use Riftwalk sparingly as he can punish you with his ult or silence
  • It's best to try to get rid of his shield before doing quick bursts of R>E>Q
  • Never be in range to get ulted
  • Your Q can cancel his ult so keep that in mind
  • Prime a Q if he decides to ult you before as to cancel it instantly if he doesn't have his passive shield up that is
  • Most of the time he'll pressure you to tower to focus on farm and take damage chances when given

VS

Maokai

Easy
Pre-6:
  • Harass as much as possible
  • Use Q to mitigate damage, but be wary as to not use it in the middle of his W as it will be negated
  • Apply lane dominance
  • If in melee range, combo with E>Q>AA>W
Post-6:
  • At this point he'll be very tanky but you can still damage him somewhat
  • Riftwalk sparingly but aggressively

  • Play the same way pre-6 but be mindful of all-ins
  • Try not to fight in his ult

Pre-6:
  • Harass and mitigate damage with Q
  • If in melee trade with E>Q>AA>W

Post-6:
  • Be aggressive when his Q is down by all-inning
  • Doing quick bursts is helpful but don't prolong a melee fight
  • Kite as best as possible

VS

Pre-6:
  • Harass and mitigate damage with Q
  • Dodge what you can

  • Avoid being harassed by her too much
Post-6:
  • Same as pre-6 but play a little more aggressive with Riftwalk
  • When she uses her ball to travel towards you from a distance, punish by all-inning her

Playstyle Back to Top

Pre-6 Laning Phase:

Kassadins early game is his weakest point. With him having a very underwhelming starting kit that doesn't faze the enemy too much puts him at a great disadvantage. Playing him wrong in the early stages could mean losing the game right out the gate.

Tips:
  • Poking with your Q whenever you get the chance is standard to apply lane dominance and timing it to mitigate magic damage can help you survive the lane a bit longer
  • It's important to maintain both your HP and MANA so utilize your netherblade.png as much as possible and if you ever get in melee range with the enemy, hitting them with it helps out a lot to restore a good chunk of mana
  • Be wary to not push up your lane as you are vulnerable to ganks without your riftwalk.png and you don't want to waste your 4.png unnecessarily
  • While harassing your opponent is good, make sure to stay even or ahead in CS
  • You will get pressured enough to push you under tower most of the time so focus on CS'ing as much as possible to you don't fall behind on missed out gold income
  • As a melee mage, you will be up against mostly ranged or lane dominant champs that can take advantage of your weak early game so sacrificing some CS or even a majority of it is worth it in the long run so as you don't die to your opponent at all
  • Use your forcepulse.png charge is necessary to clear waves faster
  • Sometimes you may need to push your wave to the turret if you need early items to buy; do this if you know your opponent left the lane and your safe to do so

TL;DR | Harass with Q, stay alive, only push wave if you know you're safe and want to buy, focus on CS

Post-6 Laning Phase:

This is the point where you're not a sitting duck anymore. Acquiring riftwalk.png drastically changes the way you play the lane. This is the breaking point in which you can duel your opponent or deal reliable damage without getting punished as much.

Tips:
  • Harassing your opponent becomes easier; close the gap with your riftwalk.png into an forcepulse.png + nulllance.png then immediately walk away and if you are in melee range while doing this, adding an AA + netherblade.png is beneficial to your damage and mana sustain
  • When using your riftwalk.png please be aware that the CD is something that shouldn't be taken lightly; you will be putting yourself in mortal danger if used immaturely as it is your main form of escape
  • Since you are mobile now, try to push your wave in when you see the appropriate time to do so as you can roam for other kills in the side lanes
  • Use your riftwalk.png sparingly as it does take a chunk of mana each cast and has a moderately high CD on both the ability and the stacks at this stage of the game

TL;DR Poke with combo when you can, shove wave to turret and roam for kills, use Riftwalk sparingly as to not screw yourself over

Mid-Game (15-25min):

When playing Kassadin you always want to remember to not be out of position. At this time Kass starts to spike in power as the items/kills start stacking up. Your damage and mobility is something to be afraid of and your positioning puts your enemy on-edge as you can be in places they don't expect you to be in.

Tips:
  • Make sure to keep your lane pushed whenever possible so you have chances to roam across the map to help your teammates
  • Ask for Blue Buff whenever its up to maximize your kit so you can provide a lot more for your team as you can zip through the map without mana issues
  • Teamfighting will be taken place so your goal as Kassadin is to target the enemy carries or whoever is a suitable target at the time; doing quick-bursts as poke damage is useful for your team so they can collapse on them
  • Utilize your forcepulse.png as much as possible when you're with your team as the slow can compensate for your team to fall-in to get a potential kill or just to get them low enough to back off
  • Maintain map control with vision from both your team and yourself and you are a mobile champion that can get to places quickly to acquire information on enemy movement
  • You have 1 of 2 choices most of the time in this phase: 1) Aim for objectives with your team (turrets/dragons/herald/baron/buffs/kills/summoner spells) to increase your lead in the game and for future fights, 2) Split-push alone utilizing both your mobility and 12.png to apply pressure to a lane so that you can force an enemy to answer it giving you and your team chances at possible objectives

TL;DR Aim for objectives and split-push, roam as much as possible to find kills, maintain map control, focus appropriate targets in team fights, position well

Late Game (30min+):

Kassadin is one of the best if not the best late game scaling champions in the game. The reason behind this is his unmatched mobility at max rank and his instant burst damage or single or multiple targets. Hitting max CDR at this point makes Kassadin a monster and is very impactful to the game enough to keep your enemies on their toes as to not be insta-killed by you. This may be his strongest point in the game, but is also what makes or break a Kassadin player to either win or lose you the game. "Positioning" is extremely important as you are squishy to die instantly, however, it goes the same way for the enemy carries against you as you can insta-kill them as well. Be aware, be cautious, but be ambitious as a play maker.

Tips:
  • POSITION. As team fights start to break out constantly and at random times you need to be prepared to be an answer to the threats that are being pressured on your team
  • Do not tunnel vision and plan out your all-ins carefully
  • Assassinate carries in the back line to take them out of the fight quickly
  • Keeping check on your riftwalk.png stacks can impact a teamfight greatly; it can either decimate the enemy or could put you in situations you never wanted to be in so landing a stacked Riftwalk is crucial in a fight
  • 3157.png is your best friend at this point of the game; you can make huge plays if used timely and correctly so be ambitious
  • 3165.png not your best friend but your right hand man; the mana restore from this can push a fight into your favor so remembering this as your teamfighting with riftwalk.png is crucial
  • Pressure side lanes as much as possible as you are mobile enough to get to your team when needed or use 12.png when appropriate
  • Use riftwalk.png stacks in groups or single-targets to maximize damage output for your team
  • Keep an eye on Dragons and Barons as they can change the flow of the game instantly
  • Even in the most dire situations Kassadin can carry games from out of nowhere so don't give up and focus on deleting your opponents
  • In rare cases you will be put in a pressuring spot to be the game winning player on the team; specifically in back-door last resorts, so check the map, look at your mana and riftwalk.png stacks, know where the enemy is and isn't, know where you are, target possible ward spots for a 12.png, and bumrush the nexus as fast as possible while utilizing your riftwalk.png hoping you can win the game for your team

TL;DR Position well, use Hourglass effectively, take advantage of Riftwalk stacks, don't tunnel vision, focus carries, split-push to provide pressure, aim for objectives

Riftwalk Back to Top

Riftwalking 101:

Riftwalk is Kassadins primary ability that makes him what he is. Learning to use it correctly takes time. What most people do is use it unnecessarily and runs into conflict in future fights. Maintaining mana/stacks/distance/positioning/damage are all core to utilizing the ability efficiently. If you were to ask me on how to use it properly I would tell you rather than show you step by step. It's a matter of practicing it in a game yourself rather than asking on how to do it. It's not something you can teach and learn easily and it comes with experience on the longevity of playing the champion which can go for any champion. Riftwalk makes or breaks a Kassadin player and wins or loses you the game in many forms such as team fights, chasing for a kill, back dooring the nexus, etc... It is the play making ability that you have to master to attain the unmatched mobility title that is Kassadin.

Tips:
  • Never spam it if you don't have a plan
  • Planning to assassinate someone? Stack your Riftwalk about 2+ stacks to enhance the damage when landed
  • Be mobile; go over walls, position, acquire vision, dodge attacks, amplify damage
  • I use smartcast as I know all the ranges for Kass, but for a person not so used to Kassadin, you can actually blink over thick walls even if what is visually shown shows that it's too big or far
  • Throughout the game especially early/mid game, you want to watch your mana pool and the amount of stacks you have otherwise you will be setting yourself up for failure if used at the wrong times and places
  • Feel free to blink to locations to get there quickly if you know you won't need it before the stack reset and if you're not worried about the mana consumption
  • Pay close attention to the stack cooldowns, sometimes you may have to wait for it to reset the stacks to do more with it
  • Closing the gap with your blink is important when chasing your enemy or just harassing him so don't be afraid to use it if it is for an appropriate cause
  • Hitting 4 stacks is the breaking point that can change the tides of the game in both negative and positive ways so use it wisely
  • With stacks in team fights, hitting multiple enemies that are clumped up can decimate the enemy team or to take out a single target very quickly
  • 3165.png and 3157.png synergize extremely well with your Riftwalk so keep those in mind when blinking into fights
  • You can carry over your Riftwalk with 4.png to make a surprise gap close (R then Flash)
  • Sacrifices sometimes have to be made so deal as much damage and kill as many enemies as possible to help out your team
  • Be ambitious with your Riftwalk even at 4 stacks

Here are a couple clips as an example of utilizing Kassadin to his fullest. Pay close attention on my positioning and what I do to take advantage on what Kassadin has to offer during a game:

Highlight #1 (Positioning and blink on group to win the game)

Highlight #2 (Grabbing a long distance kill and sacrificing to get objectives)

About Me Back to Top

I'm XigneoN and I'm a Kassadin OTP playing him both Mid and Top lane and currently I'm the #1 Kassadin in the world according to LoLSkill. I've spent a long time mastering this champion to then share how to play him fully to the public.

I play Kassadin mainly because I like playing assassin type champs; ones that require certain timing and positioning to emphasize the skill set they use to put their power at its fullest. Carrying in games as Kassadin is a rush of adrenaline as you can change the flow of the game in your hands if played correctly.
