Summoner Spells Back to Top

Core Summoner Spells

1. Flash 4.png

Flash is the most important spell on Katarina. There will be times where you get caught out. 4.png can be used to escape quickly. You can also shadowstep.pngaway after your flash to extend the gap. When the enemy is low and you are looking for the killing blow, use 4.png and shadowstep.png + bouncingblades.png + killerinstinct.png + deathlotus.png+14.png to finish your opponent off. The  4.png and shadowstep.png catches your opponent off guard by appearing like a long  shadowstep.png.

2. Ignite 14.png

You want to have 14.png as your second summoner spell 70% of the time. Katarina's base damages are very low, especially in the early laning phase. 14.png provides that extra damage that will surprise your opponent. 
Sometimes I use ignite to give me the extra damage I need to duel your opponent 1v1. If the opponent is low (and they decide to continue to duel you), use your basic combo  shadowstep.png + bouncingblades.png +killerinstinct.png  + 14.png and some auto attacks to kill them.

Alot of the times, opponents will not expect you to do that much damage with 14.png. So when you surprise them with your damage, they will have to 4.png away. If they don't 4.png, they will most likely die.

3. Teleport 12.png

Thanks to Season 5 Worlds, 12.png is rapidly becoming a common summoner spell that mid laners will take to improve the map pressure. Katarina actually benefits very strongly with 12.png because she has an amazing clean up potential with high mobolity. There has been times where I 12.png bot lane and got a triple kill, then went to get dragon, and from there we snowballed the game to victory. My recommendation is to get it, if you know your opponent is likely to get 12.png as their second summoner spell. In the current meta, they are champions such as 45.png and61.png.

From my experience, I also like to get 12.png if I am up against a hard-counter to Katarina. When I play against champions like 38.png , 10.png or 131.png, I know there is very little chance that I can solo kill them unless they miss-play. So i decided to get 12.png and channel my focus on the bot lane, and teleporting at opportune times to get an easy double kill.

4. Exhaust 3.png

This is not entirely a bad idea even though it is rarely taken. It is particular useful against champions with delayed burst such as 238.png or 105.png. The only reason I don't use 3.png is because rushing 3157.png can easily counter these champions.

5. Heal or Barrier 7.png 21.png

The purpose of Katarina is to kill and get her resets. That is where 14.png  is super important. Both 7.png and 21.pngjust prevents you from dying, rather than killing. Hence I don't think it is effective on Katarina. 

6. Ghost 6.png

Some players can argue that 6.png  is better to have than 4.png because it gives Katrina the utility to chase her opponents and get resets in fights. This is true. By running 6.png, Katarina has the potential to gain distance and get her resets in team fights. However, from my experience, there are many ways to obtain more movement speed to give Katarina the ability to chase down enemies. These include movement speed quints, 3285.png and scuttle crabs. Hence, I don't need to have 6.png.

7. Cleanse 1.png

It may be useful to run cleanse against champions with heavy crowd control. However, I feel like you can get 3140.png for these situations. Remember that 3140.png builds 3139.png and the AD will scale with Katarina's killerinstinct.png and deathlotus.png. Hence I don't think it is neccessary to get 1.png since there are better summoner spells to choose from.

Explanation of Spell Order


  • Max katarinaq.png because if gives you more damage during the laning phase. Also, by lowering the cool-down, you have more opportunities to lay down daggers to set up kills in the lane. I prefer katarinaq.png max over katarinaewrapper.png max, although katarinaewrapper.png max is quite viable.
  • Also note that at level 4, I decide to put a second point into katarinaewrapper.png just to lower the cool down and make plays more smoothly. 


The Level 1 Invades

  • NEVER skill an ability until you need it. 
  • If your team is winning team fights, then get shadowstep.png to continually hop around, reset after resets, during the level 1 invade. 
  • If it doesn't look like you are going to win, get bouncingblades.png to do as much damage during the invade.

Starting Items

    Cost- efficient start. Makes it easier to last hit under towers. Good vs melee champions.
    Get this is you prefer to have AP in the beginning. Great for snowballing. Good against ranged champions.
    Get this is you will be harassed alot or up against dot damage.

Core Items

    1. Gives magic penetration.
    2. First core item. Prioritise long swords over ampliflying tome, but revolver over cutless.
    3. Spellbinder > Void > Deathcap.
    4. Final item.

Situational Items

    A great defensive item. The passive can be the difference between winning or losing a team fight.
    A good item if you want to be a little tankier but still do damage.

Explanation of Starting Items



1. Long Sword and 3 Health Potions  1036.png2003.png x3

  • This is the most cost-efficient start because it gives you damage on your katarinapassive.png and katarinaewrapper.png. It allows you to rush your 3144.png and ultimately your 3146.png. It is also useful for your level 2 all-in. The AA damage is significantly enhanced to ensure you can AA your enemies until they die. 


2. Dark Seal and 3 Health Potions 1082.png + 2003.png x3

  • 1082.png is in fact a very cost-efficient item even excluding the mana benefits. It gives Katarina some AP to complement her weak laning phase. The only issue is that it delays your core items by 400g, but if you get some kill, then I believe it is worth it. 


Explanation of Core Items



1. Sorcerer's Shoes 3020.png 

  • The extra +15 magic penetration helps counters champions that tend to get 3155.png or 3102.png

  • The movement speed is also great on Katarina because it helps her roam better.


2. Hextech Gunblade 3146.png 

  • The reworked Katarina synergies extremely well with 3146.png. Her AD ratios benefits from the extra ad stat and the active provides a nice burst. 

  • Always prioritise 3145.png over 3144.png but if you don't have enough gold, then prioritise 1036.png over 1052.png.

3. Luden's Echo 3285.png 

  • A very good item to get after your 3146.png because your damage spike is insane. 
  • Many Katarina mains go for magic penetration like 3136.png or 3135.png as a second item, however I don't think mathematically that it is the best option. Remember, most champions will not build a magic resist item as their second item, that is why it is best to build raw AP damage. 

4. Rabadon's Deathcap 3089.png
  • A pretty standard item for an AP mage or assassin.

  • Get this as a 3rd-4th item. The only exception is that you rush 3135.png if the enemy team has lots of magic resist. 


5.Void Staff 3135.png

  • A good magic penetration item to get that also scales into the late game.

  • You may even rush this as your second item if the enemy team has a lot of individual magic resist.


6. Zhonya's Hourglass 3157.png 

  • Katarina can use Zhonya's to wait for her cooldowns, bait enemies spells and ultimates, evade damage like Zed's Deathmark. I have chosen to pick this as my last item because I want to rush as much damage early on to snowball. 

Explanation of Situational Items


1. Haunting Guise 3136.png 

  • Not a bad item anymore since the Katarina rework. This item is very effective if you have it during the mid game because Katarina now has very high base and early on damage. I still prefer AP over magic penetration, but this now a viable purchase.

2.Guardian's Angel 3026.png 

  • A very reliable item in the late game.

  • Protects Katarina in the event where you cannot 3157.png

  • Gives +40 AD for damage and armour.
  • Sell 3020.png for 3026.png as a final item.

Welcome to My Katarina Guide 


My IGN is PeEiKaBoO and I have been playing League of Legend since end of season 2. I have picked up Katarina since and she has been my main champion for the past 3 years. She is incredibly fun and her kit suits my play-style. I am by no means a pro Katarina player; just a casual player that mains Katarina. I have played over 3000 games of Katarina in normal queues (rank anxiety OP).

My guide is based on the Katarina mains all over the world. I just compile what they do and compare it with my experience to come up with a highly researched Katarina guide. This is not a guide telling you the ideal way to play Katarina, rather it gathers the different play style from other Katarina mains. Pick one that suits your play-style.

Full Item Build Paths Back to Top

There are many ways to build Katarina. This is very dependent on your play style. I have made a list of the builds that I found effective. 


1. Full AP Scaling Build


3020.png > 3146.png > 3285.png >  3089.png > 3135.png > 3157.png  (Replace 3020.png for 3026.png)

  • This is the build path I use if I snowball ahead early on and I notice that the enemy has little to no MR.



3020.png > 3146.png > 3285.png > 3135.png  > 3089.png > 3157.png  (Replace 3020.png for 3026.png)
  • This is the build path I use if I am going even and notice that some MR is being built.



2. Magic Penetration Build

3020.png > 3146.png3136.png > 3135.png > 3089.png > 3157.png  (Replace 3020.png for 3026.png)


  • This build focuses on winning early. The 3020.png and 3136.png  means that for roughly 15 minutes from the point of purchase, Katarina will deal true damage. This is the period where she needs to snowball the game to victory. Failing to do so, Katarina will fall off and won't do damage at all in the late game. 
  • I personally don't like this build because it becomes extremely risky if you don't get an early lead. Also, the cost for a 3136.png has increased which has made it less desirable to buy. 


Laning Phase (Level 1-8) Back to Top

Level 1


  • Generally you would skill Bouncing Blades (Q) first. This allows you to farm safely and from afar to prevent your opponent to harass you.

  • Provided that you decide not to leash for your Jungler, rush up to the melee minions and last hit where necessary. When the opponent comes to lane, immediately walk up and throw Bouncing Blades (Q) and apply pressure. 

  • Continue to last hit where necessary and throw Bouncing Blades (Q) until you reach level 2. If your opponent returns the aggression at level 1, then don't hesitate to play passive and use Bouncing Blade (Q) to last hit.

Level 2


  • You have the option to either skill Sinister Steel (W) or Shunpo (E). 

  • If you are up against a champion that is ranged and has skillshots that you need to dodge, then it is worth getting Shunpo (E). Likewise, if the opponents jungler can potentially gank your lane at level 2, then skills Shunpo (E) to escape. 
  • If you are up against a melee champion, then getting Sinister Steel (W) will allow you to trade with your opponent. Getting Sinister Steel (W) in this case is also helpful in proc-ing your Bouncing Blades (Q). This combo can severely put you ahead if executed correctly. 

Level 3


  • This is the stage where you can afford to play more aggressively. 

  • Your main form of harass is Bouncing Blades (Q) which you can then decide to proc it with either a QEW or QW + AA combo. 

  • Generally you don't want to use your Shunpo (E) as a form of harass unless you know they cannot retaliate or if the Jungler is occupied in another lane. 

Level 6

  • This is where your kill potential increases dramatically.

  • Do not be afraid to use your ultimate as a means of harass instead of as a finisher. The cooldown of your ultimate is low; abuse it. If you think you can kill your opponent, then you want to Q-E-W-R-14.png

  • Alternatively, you could also use E-Q-W-R- 14.png. The benefit of the second combo, is that it conceals the Bouncing Blades (Q) which gives your opponent less time to react to the fact that you are aiming to all-in for the kill. 

Mid Game (Level 9-15) Back to Top

  • This is the phase where Katarina needs to make a presence in the game. Katarina needs to get kills in the mid-game to start snowballing. Push out your lane, and roam bottom to pick up kills. It is also smart to coordinate with your jungler to head bot at the same time. This will increase the chances of you picking up a kill or at least assists. 

  • By this time, you would ideally want to have your 3157_32.png. This will ensure that you can dive under towers during ganks.

  • When you reach level 11 and have rank 2 on Death Lotus, use that to your advantage in either the lane or roam bot.

Late Game (Level 16+) Back to Top

  • Katarina does fall off in the late game. She begins to fall off around the 35 minutes mark.

  • This is primarily because the enemy would have some form of magic resist. For this reason, your goal at this stage is to either dish out as much damage before you die or to assassinate either the ADC or APC. 

  • 3026_32.png is the best item to have in the late game because chances are you will die fairly quickly. 

  • If the game exceeds over the 1 hour mark, then switch out 3020_32.png for 3100_32.png . The lichbane will help Katarina siege better in the late game.

The Importance of Shunpo Back to Top

There are many uses for Shunpo that every Katarina player should know and utilise. Below is a list of how Shunpo is such an important spell.


1. Shunpo (E) to Thresh's Lantern

  • Rather than having to walk to threshes lantern, just shunpo to it. It saves alot of time and can get you out of tight spots. 
                              

  • Same can be done with Jarvan's Flag and Teemo's Shrooms. Make use of it, as it increases Katarina's mobility.

The Importance of Death Lotus Back to Top

1. Death Lotus to Reveal Invisible Targets

  • Your Death Lotus Icon with light up if an invisible target is nearby such as Shaco and Teemo.

  • You can check the bush for enemies using the same idea without needing to ward or walk into the bush.

  • Watch the direction of your daggers to know where the invisible target is moving.
