kayle summoner spells.jpg

4.png Flash should be a part of your build in 99% of your games, if not ALL of them. 10.png is not a very mobile champion so you'll need this as your get free out of jail card. Alternatively, Flash is always helpful if you're looking to make an aggressive play.

14.png Ignite is for kill potential in lane as well as when roaming. Mid is all about winning your lane, securing kills, and so on--an early kill can snowball the entire game in your favor and ignite will help with this! You can run 14.png on top lane but I'm not really a fan of it right now since 12.png is so strong.

12.pngTeleport is a spell you should almost always take for Top Lane. Sure, 14.png gives you kill potential, but then the enemy top laner uses 12.png and impacts the map while you're stuck in an island.

You can use 12.png in the mid lane but I'd advise against it in most cases, unless you want to match pressure from another mid lane with globals such as 4.png.

3.pngExhaust is mostly used to deal with Assassins. You can pick this against 238.png91.png55.png92.png157.png but you have kayleR.png so you don't 100% need it. It's still a good pick if you want to play for your team and no one else is running 3.png against an assassin or hyper carry.

6.pngGhost is a recent favorite of mine in the mid lane. Not as strong after recent nerfs but still a very valid option.

11.png Smite is obviously if you go jungle. But honestly 10.png Jungle is meh right now.

Masteries Back to Top

kayle masteries.jpg

This should be what your main Kayle Mastery Page looks for both Solo Lanes. Some points can change depending on the game, so let's talk about the situational masteries.

Why not Fervor of Battle?

Changes in Preseason 2017 brought a rework to Fervor of Battle mastery 2016, removing the on hit damage in exchange for extra Attack Damage.

As you can probably imagine, it's still good on auto attack based champions and such, still usable on Kayle. However, she doesn't benefit nearly as much. On hit damage used to be doubled by 3124.png's passive, allowing her to do a shitload of damage every other auto after stacking Rageblade. Fervor also no longer stacks with abilities, and Kayle's unique multi stacking with judicatorrighteousfury.png is gone (used to count as both spell and basic attack), so the Keystone lost a lot of its power on 10.png.

Why Stormraider's Surge?

Stormraider's Surge is a keystone that will allow you to shore up part of your weaknesses due to rather low range. In a lot of fights, opponents won't let you sit there autoing with judicatorrighteousfury.png without punishing you, so the extra movement speed and slow resistance from this keystone allow you to kite back and forth and do your job better. When chasing fleeing opponents this is also an excellent Keystone.

It's worth mentioning that in the early stages of the game it will be quite hard to proc this mastery, but once you finish 3124.png and even 3100.png you will notice you can proc this frequently with ease.

What about Thunderlord's Decree?

Thunderlord's Decree remains a valid option if you feel like you can't make use of Stormraider's Surge. You will be getting extra burst which is useful especially for trading in lane. judicatorreckoning.png+judicatorrighteousfury.png or judicatorrighteousfury.pngx2 will instantly proc Thunderlord's, making it very strong in short trades. I sometimes run this mid lane if I'm playing with 4.png+6.png and feel I don't need the extra mobility from Stormraider's Surge.

Other Keystones

Fresh Blood vs

Totally up to you here. I personally don't feel like I ever need the sustain from Feast and Fresh Blood is quite easy to apply vs

Before the changes Natural Talent was a horrible mastery, but after the changes that gave it better base values it's now a better option, especially for the extra AD. With that said, 10.pngauto attacks a lot so she uses lifesteal pretty well so it's up to you.

Bounty Hunter mastery 2016 vs Double-Edged Sword vs Battle Trance

I think Battle Trance fits Kayle best as she's a sustained damage dealer. Double Edged feels like too much of a risk on a champion that can be exploited in the laning phase. You can't go wrong with Bounty Hunter (unless you aren't picking up kills).

So personally: Battle Trance > Bounty Hunter > Double Edged Sword

Culinary Master mastery s4 vs Weapon Expertise mastery s2

Totally up to you here. I exchange them depending on the matchup. If I want to play aggressive or split push all game I'll go Assassin. For more passive/safe laning I go Secret Stash

Executioner mastery s4 vs Strength of Spirit mastery s4

Again, personal preference. After the Merciless nerfs I'm more inclined to go Medidation than ever. You can also split them by going 3-2 but since Kayle gets no mana items Meditation really helps a ton.

Precision vs Intelligence

After the Precision nerfs, I'm of the opinion that Intelligence is a better option, especially as it will make up for all that scaling CDR and allow you to reach 37.5% sooner.

Abilities Back to Top

kayle abilities.jpg

Skill Order

Once upon a time, 10.png used to max kayleQ.png. Then the nerf nation attacked.

Anyways, you max kayleE.png because of its sustained damage and because it's your main damage ability. Mana cost doesn't increase per rank either

Then the choice is between maxing kayleQ.png or kayleW.png next. I personally like going 3 points in judicatordivineblessing.png and then maxing judicatorreckoning.png but it's totally up to you!

When to max W over Q?

You'll see most people max kayleQ.png second. Even though the mana cost goes up, you get 50 base damage per rank and the slow potency increases.

I'm personally a fan of maxing kayleW.png second though. The base heal increases by quite a bit and so does the movement speed given. I like to play for my team and find that having a more potent heal and haste ability is much stronger in skirmishes and teamfights.

Kayle items.jpg

Starting Items

As Kayle you should almost always go 1076_32.png and 2003.png. Best start for her undoubtedly.

Alternatively you can start 1082.png and 2003.png/2031.png. This will give you more health sustain but you'll run out of mana faster, not to mention the lower maximum health since 1082.png doesn't give HP.

You can read my article here to understand more about the advantages to picking up The Dark Seal

Core Items

  • 3006.png after the most recent buffs Berserker's Greaves are probably a core item for Kayle. Most players now grab it even before 3101.png if they can afford the item in first/second back. The item gives you the same attack speed and more mobility, very important for laning.
  • 3115_32.png is absolutely staple on Kayle. Get it as your first item 95% of the time (excluding boots)
  • 3124.png The new Rageblade is not as much of a rush item as the old one was, but you still want to pick it up as a 2nd or 3rd item . Rageblade is a fantastic item as it amplifies your on hit damaged, not to mention you gain Attack Speed and Ability Power per stack. You use every stat in this item and it's extremely efficient. Currently I've been building it right after 3101.png and before my 3115.png completion.

  • 3006.png The best DPS boots for Kayle right now. Solid option if you like to splitpush or shred faster. They'll also help you stack up 3124.png faster.
  • 3009.png Not really that good anymore, only has 10 more movement speed than the other options.
  • 3020.png The boots that will give you the most burst. But this isn't season 3/4 Kayle anymore.
  • 3158.png Gets you closer to that 40% CDR that you need. Only go for these if you don't have enough cooldown in your rune setup!

Situational Items

Magic Resistance Options:

  • 3091.png is the preferred magic resistance item of choice for 10.png right now. Attack Speed means you stack up 3124.png faster and since you already have so much attack speed in your build it means the magic resistance shred and extra magic resistance given on hit stacks up really fast. The 6.11 update made this item excellent for Kayle and I recommend you pick this up against AP lanes if you're getting bullied.

  • 3140.png is the other option. Personally I only grab this if I really need to remove a really important spell like 25.pngdarkbindingmissile.png or 33.pngpuncturingtaunt.png. Fortunately for Kayle, 3139.png is actually pretty decent on her compared to most mages as she uses AD well.

  • 3001.pngI personally don't like Abyssal on Kayle that much anymore, especially since Wit's End changes.

Attack Speed Options:

  • 3094.png looks weird in Kayle's build I know. But it was actually extremely strong before the nerfs in patch 6.3. Attack Speed, Movement Speed, Magic Damage Burst with a basic attack and more importantly extra range for one basic attack.

  • 3085_32.png has become a popular item on Kayle in season 5 due to all the extra AoE damage you can output. With it giving critical chance it's not such an ideal item to pick up now, but you can still get it later in the game. The attack speed given means you'll be stacking 3124.png faster too. Personally I don't build this item often but it has great synergy with 3116.png as I'll get to slow 3 people at the same time.

  • 3046.png my new favorite 3086.png item on Kayle. With 3094.png getting nerfed and this getting buffed, it's now a really good option for 1v1 duels. The damage reduction is insane and outside of 3115.png and 3124.png there's no other item that will give you so much Attack Speed.

  • 3078.png is actually pretty strong on Kayle post 6.11 buffs. Building out of 3101.png means more Attack Speed and CDR and with 3115.png you'll be capped at 40% CDR with two items, allowing for other rune setups. The problem with this item is that it's rather expensive and will delay your other important core items such as 3124.png.

Other items:

  • 3100.png While the current Kayle build is much more Attack Speed oriented with sustain damage, burst is still welcomed especially when playing versus compositions that won't allow you to stack a ton of auto attacks. This is where Lich Bane comes in.

  • 3135.png is an item I only really pick up later in the game when enemies start stackingMagic Resistance with items like 3065.png and/or 3102.png. Usually your kaylepassive.png and 3091.png is enough for early/mid. If you have no extra magic pen or resistance reduction other than your passive it is recommended that you pick it up!

  • 3116.png is an decent item on Kayle. After the nerfs to its slow, I no longer build it. With Rylai's your attacks will slow enemies for 20% and with all your attack speed you can essentially make them perma-slowed. The stats on it are decent.

  • 3145.png/3146.png personally a big fan of this item currently. Gunblade not as much after the nerfs but it's still solid. After I have my core two items and I'm building towards Lich Bane, I find that the artifial burst from 3145.png helps a lot, especially since burst will allow you to proc Stormraider's Surge and kite better. You can simply sit on revolver in the mid game and then either sell or upgrade as last item.

  • 3089.png because who doesn't like tons of AP right? I usually only get this as a last item if I really want MORE damage, but I wouldn't recommend getting it always. It's also fantastic to buy Deathcap because you have an awesome 0.45 AP ratio on your kayleW.png and your heals will do a lot not to mention speed you and your teammates up like crazy.

  • 3157.png is a strong item against some AD assassins and AD Carries and if you want to be a bit less selfish with your ultimate

Understanding Early Purchases

First Back:

  • <600 Gold: 1042.png + 2003.png + 2055.png
  • >600 and <900 Gold: 1042.png + 1042.png + 2003.png + 2055.png
  • >900 and <1100 Gold: 1042.png + 1042.png + 1042.png+ 2003.png + 2055.pngor 1042.png + 1042.png + 1001.png + 2003.png + 2055.png
  • >1100 Gold (Ideal but not always possible): 3006.png + 2003.png + 2055.png

Berserker's Greaves are extremely strong right now as the attack speed matches the one on 3101.png and gives you the extra mobility to kite and avoid ganks

Early Core build (pre 2 core items):

I've been doing this recently and it feels really good. Recurve bow and the extra on hit allow you to punish a lot of matchups much more, where you can squeeze in an extra auto attack or two. From there, you can then either go for 3115.png or 3124.png first (I usually go Rageblade).

Early Core build (vs Heavy AP):

I do this a lot when facing double/triple AP. The issue is that rageblade is delayed but Wit's End will do wonders versus AP opponents as you'll be shredding them and becoming tanky

Mid Game Artificial Spike:

A little something I enjoy doing, the Revolver in the mid game really helps you get that extra 'oomph' of burst and helps to proc Stormraiders. Stats are decent and passive is up every 40 seconds

Full Build Examples

Burst Build

Not much to say here, going full AP after core items is a good idea if you can't stay in auto range for long.

Attack Speed Oriented

You will have Carpal Tunnel after the match ends. Personally not a fan of going for more than 3 AS items but Koreans love it

Mixed Build

What I tend to go for most. You get a good mix of burst and sustained damage and Wit's End is a deceptively strong item against Magic Damage dealers.

Rune Notes for 3100.png Builds:

Rune wise, I ditch the 20% scaling because I eventually get 3100.png so you can either do 6 Scaling CDR + 3 Flat MR for AP matchups or 9 Flat CDR Glyphs + 1 Quintessence for 10% at level 1!

The key to winning an Ahri match up is to bully her early on and get her to burn through her sustain. A few Q's will do the trick, you just have to make sure you dodge her Q (orb) and don't set yourself up for being vulnerable to a charm. She's all skill shots, you're not, and if you're able to play it right this means your damage is infinitely better.

A key thing to remember against Ahri is that her Q coming back is true damage. So if you get hit with it initially, still make the effort to dodge--it hurts more coming back!

Once she's six, it's a lot harder to play against her since she is so mobile with her R and can quickly get out of your damage if she's low.

I would probably recommend getting an early 3001.png or 3091.png because she's probably getting her own 3001.png early on.

Akali can be an annoying match up because she does a phenomenal amount of burst after six. I do not advise picking Kayle into Akali unless you feel you can COMPLETELY shut her down before she gets six. She simply cannot gain an advantage or the lane is utterly over. I have played this match up at plat level in both ranked 5s and solo queue, sometimes as the Akali, and it has never gone well for the Kayle unless the team worked to shut down Akali.

You cannot 1v1 her if she has3146_32.png completed--even if you are somewhat fed. She has so much sustain once she has 3145_32.png that none of your damage truly sticks to her. Furthermore, a good ultimate can save you from some of her damage, but she'll just disappear into her shroud and do the combo again once your ultimate is used.

2043_32.png will allow you to fight her if you drop it. She will have to auto it down while you kill her, so since it's actually 25g cheaper, she's actually a bit easier to beat now.

Anivia is a rough lane because you can't fight her after six. Not only is she stellar at farming, she has an attack speed debuff and an immense amount of damage. Be aware that she will try to stun you then blow her combo on you--dodging her stun is easy as long as you're constantly watching for it, but the problem is Kayle gets up in Anivia's grill to do the brunt of her damage which makes it a lot harder to avoid.

There are two ways to play this lane. You can be hyperaggressive and try to make her burn her passive or4.pngby level three or four--then call for jungler ganks (or try to 1v1 her, as her passive is a large part of why she will always win against you). This is really risky, and you should only do it if you start with a2044_32.pngto avoid ganks. You can also just turn it into a farm lane. Most Anivia players prefer to farm anyway, and if you aren't sure you can kill her, you can easily safely farm in lane.

Anivia is pretty devastated without her blue--moreso than most champions. Because of this, I always make an effort to mess with her blue if I'm against her.Make sure you note if their jungler started blue or red and get a timer for their blue going. Communicate your intentions to your jungler--ask if they want to pink dragon or try to set up a steal. Know your team's strengths, however: if the lane near blue is losing badly or your jungler is not strong, you should not go for this. However, a good steal can be safe and completely win you your lane with Anivia.

Below is an old video, but it might help you with the matchup

Pretty easy matchup, nothing special really

Rule of thumb here is that you ALWAYS want to have more Movement Speed than Darius.

He buys 1001.png? You buy them too. He goes3111.png? You build3009.png and kite him for days. As long as you're avoiding dariusaxegrabcone.png you win every single trade. If you're confident in your kiting abilities you can still rush 3006.png it's fine.

You also should get 3116.png in this game. He won't even be able to move and it's super frustrating to be perma slowed for every basic attack.

Old video that can help you understand the matchup better:

Diana is a really strong champion, deceptively so. She has a weak early game, but once she hits six she can pretty much duel anyone--Kayle included. Diana doesn't want to fight pre-six, so try to make her fight early on as much as possible.

Most importantly is that you need to dodge her dianaQ.png. It's a crescent shape and you can usually tell by her movements when she will try to hit/CS with it. Once it's down, feel free to kayleQ.png her and get off a few autoattacks with kayleE.png up. If you continue to trade like this, you may be able to kill her right as you both hit six. A good Diana, however, will just go back around six to heal up so try to keep the lane pushed so she does not get the opportunity to recall without losing a lot.

Additionally, watch for her W (shield) timer. If she just used it, you have a long window in which you are strong--and also in which she will not have kill potential.

Post 6 you HAVE to use your ult before she uses hers. The blink is pretty fast so be fast on that trigger finger!

I would probably recommend getting an early 3001.png or 3091.png because she's probably getting her own 3001.png early on.

One of the hardest matchups for Kayle right now, but it's winnable. I'm putting hard on this until I figure it out better as I haven't faced fiora more than a handful of times.

While 114.png is a melee champion, she has tools to consistently close the gap on you with fioraq.png and will out damage you by hitting Vitals and getting Grasp of the Undying procs.

Your ult does close to nothing against her as she's not a burst champion. The moment you use kayleR.png she can just back off, wait for it to wear off and come back in.

Definitely NOT a fun matchup

This is a skill match up and it can easily go either way.

The first thing you should know about Fizz is that he hurts. A lot. He also snowballs. A lot. You want to prevent both of these things from happening, so you want to play cautiously until two to avoid taking free damage.

Be very careful about his level 2, you should probably take kayleW.png to avoid his all in.

After level two, watch his cooldowns closely. If he fizzjump.png's at all, go in to trade. You will win any trade if his fizzjump.png is down. Additionally, if you have a jungler coming for a gank, try to kayleQ.png him to force him to fizzjump.png it to block the damage--his fizzjump.png has a longer cooldown than your kayleQ.png, so your jungler can then gank safely and he'll get baited.

It is important to continue to AA him with kayleE.png after he tries to disengage. At first it may seem like you lost the trade--he got onto you, did half your health, then ran away--but if you continue to AA with W on you for the speed burst, you will win the trade.

Once you're level six, you need to realize he will always try to burst you and attempt to get you to hit kayleR.png. Hold onto your kayleR.png for his fizzmarinerdoom.png. Your ult completely blocks his and it's incredibly easy to block, so you have the advantage here as long as you don't ult to block some of his burst when he first jumps onto you. A lot of the times a Fizz will use his R to finish you off after he's disengaged, so remember: save your R, save your life.

104.png top is pretty popular right now, but he can't do much versus 10.png

He has 425 range while you have 525 with your kayleE.png. Not only this, but you can hide behind your minions so his autos can't hit you.

The key to winning here is fighting in minion waves and using your minions so he can't hit you ever.

Avoid standing near walls as you'll make it very easy for him to set up gravesclustershot.png

39.png is a weird matchup. You can definitely beat her pre 6. But if there's ever a gank or something that puts you behind, the lane is pretty much over. Irelia snowballs extremely well and she hits her midgame powerspike before you.

You want to definitely abuse the short amount of time you're stronger pre 6. If you can get a kill you'll be able to stay ahead, so if possible call the jungler to help you.

If you both back around 1100 gold you'll have 3006.png and Irelia has 3057.png you're definitely going to lose most trades if Irelia knows what she's doing. She's able to use ireliagatotsu.png to close in, stun or slow you with ireliaequilibriumstrike.png and trade some blows with ireliahitenstyle.png. After that she backs off and you've effectively lost the trade unless you can stay in range and string multiple kayleE.png auto attacks.

If you're even, you'll start noticing there isn't much you can do once she's around 9. After that you simply have to farm for your two core items.

Given the small window of time in which you have the advantage (pre 6 and pre first back) and how hard she snowballs I'd consider this a hard matchup, especially for the more inexperienced

While 24.png is a melee he can constantly get good trades on you by using forcing short trades withjaxcounterstrike.png+jaxleapstrike.png+jaxempowertwo.png and then backing off until his cooldowns are back up.

Best time to get an advantage in this lane is definitely pre 1st item (aka his 3078.png). Your level 1-2 is stronger so definitely try to abuse that short window of time to limit his laning phase until he backs.

He'll also usually have an early powerspike than you. To compete with him you need3115.png+3124.png at the very least and a good kayleR.png right before you get stunned.

If you can, call for jungle help. You'll need it

Karthus is undead. You're an angel. You can smite him with your holy powers.

But really, Karthus has a rough lane against Kayle. Bully him early on and deny him his precious farm he needs for his R to carry. As with any Karthus match up, just be aware of his defile and your positioning. Also, remember that your ultimate counteracts his in a 1v1 situation, but don't be afraid to use it to tower dive him if you feel confident enough and know his wall is on cooldown.

So something I love to do against Kassadin is to take MARK%20MAGIC%20PEN.png AD marks. His nulllance.png only blocks magic damage so you'll just win trades by spamming kayleE.png.

Pre 6 you should be bullying him VERY hard. Put him under turret and make him suffer.

This is an easy lane. Q her when it's up and farm your heart out. If she tries to all-in you at six, you can just ultimate through it and lay down the hurt, thus winning the trade.

The biggest thing to watch out for is her roaming. Since Katarina excels off roaming, make sure your wards are placed at key points and that you're always aware of where she is at all times. Push hard on her if she goes MIA for even a second so she loses maximum farm if she did roam, hopefully for no gain.

7.png is one of those champions that's always a nightmare to lane against... unless you're Kayle.

Even then, this is a matchup that just tilts me super hard because I usually just misplay against LeBlanc.

Ideally you want to push her in  to force her to use her leblancslide.png and leblancchaosorb.png to thin the minion wave instead of using it on you.

Never stand close to a minion wave as you'll just give her the chance to kill two birds with one stone and farm minions while hitting you with leblancslide.png

You should pay a lot of attention to her level 3. She'll try to leblancslide.png in, followed by a leblancsoulshackle.png and leblancchaosorb.png. You absolutely need to to dodgeleblancsoulshackle.png or else you'll automatically lose the trade!

Post 6 you should need to be fast on your kayleR.png in order to block her burst, whether it's coming from leblancslide.png+leblancmimic.png or leblancchaosorb.png+leblancmimic.png

You win trades early on, especially if her lissandraQ.png is on cooldown. But after level 6 you have to be very careful because she can burst you down with lissandraR.png.

You absolutely need an MR item for this matchup. Personally I like getting 3001.png but you can go 3091.png too!

Lulu is a very good mid lane right now--in many ways, she's a superior Kayle. She's very annoying and you likely won't kill her if you just try to all in and she tries to all in. With Lulu, managing her cooldowns is the name of the game. You must know when she used them as her combo is devastating.

Dodging her skills will win you the match up. If she does not land her Q, you will win every trade. If she lands it, you will lose them all and she will kite you.

Also be aware that if she uses E on herself, a creep to deny you a CS, or even you, know that she can Q shortly after and damage you with it since Pix gains extra range.

  • Lulu wants to hit creeps AND you when they are in lane, so you want to stand away from your creeps. Don't give them free damage on you. You can easily strafe to avoid Q if you're paying attention.
  • You will primarily use E to CS, going into melee range for a creep generally means she will E + Q you.
  • Be aware of how much burst she has. Her E + Q start to hurt quickly; by level 11, she will out burst you and can easily turnaround what seems like a losing fight. She might be at half, but she will quickly be close to full with her ultimate and you'll be dead.
  • If she makes the mistake of Qing for nothing, immediately Q her and chase her down hitting her with E. Do not let her get off a free Q. Make sure you follow up and attack her after the slow is down and/or she's missed it.
  • Avoiding Q's literally decides the entire match up. GLHF.

Lux is just annoying. The most likely scenario is that you won't kill her and she won't kill you.

It becomes a pretty easy matchup after the first few levels--this is largely in part because blocking her ultimate is very easy with your ultimate due to its cast time. If you happen to get caught, she still has zero kill potential since you can just ultimate her ultimate.

Try to get her to burn her4.png early on, since she's pretty much a free kill with it down if your jungler comes.

Once her flash is down, you can start trying to all in. If she misses luxlightbinding.png and has flash down she's doomed!

Welcome to the most BORING LANE EVER.

I guess it's free scaling for you, he can't really do much to you in a 1v1 scenario. landslide.png can be an extremely annoying skill as it's an Attack Speed slow, but overall Malphite can't do much versus you.

The whole idea of picking Malphite is playing him versus AD matchups, but 10.png is AP! This means you force him into weird item builds he doesn't really want and delay his 3025.png or 3110.png.

Again. Watch for ganks here. He can definitely kill you with help from his jungler.

Morgana is annoying because she's a very farm oriented lane and a fairly safe champion, but she really has next to no kill potential on you. Just dodge her binds, which are really very slow and easy to predict, and you win every trade. You can bully her early once you hit 2 and can get a few Q's off followed up by E harass.

  • Dodge Q's.
  • Your level 1-5 are infinitely stronger.
  • She should have zero kill potential on you.

Also be sure to roleplay with her, since she is Kayle's sister after all!

In short, it's pretty easy for Kayle. Nidalee doesn't have sustained damage and you can easily win early trades. She can harass heavily with autoattacks, but once you hit level two, you can easily out trade her--especially if you dodge her spear which is basically her only form of damage at early levels.

The key to this match up is to push onto her early. Push her into her tower to get an early level advantage and hit her with Q's under her tower so she has to burn through her potions. If you keep playing this way, she will either have to back too soon or you will get a kill.

  • Get level 2 before her and go aggressive.
  • Dodge her Q's, using the minions as a shield as much as possible.
  • Go aggressive every time your Q is off of cooldown.

Orianna probably one of the hardest lanes for Kayle

She'll be very punishing early on. She is one of the hardest lanes for Kayle to go against. Most Orianna players play aggressively with a lot of autoattacks that really hurt in the early levels. Cooldown management is everything. For example, if she just tried to harass you or she moved her ball, you have a small window (nine seconds for shield) where you can go in and shred her for some free damage with Q/E thus winning the trade.

At level six, you can all in since you can mitigate most of her damage with your ultimate, but she may still win the trades if she plays it right.

  • Attempt to get level 2 first. Watch her ball positioning to be aware of cooldowns. If successful, zone her with Q and E.
  • Time her shield cooldown. Be aware of when she uses it and be aware it lasts for four seconds. You can engage once her shield is down.
  • Trade with short trades: Q and then E autos. Do not all in, poke her down with short engages.

Below is an old video but it may help you out!

This matchup is the definition of TILT.

There is basically nothing you can do. You go into lane and 80.png will walk up, throw a pantheon_throw.png and back off so you can't trade back. The moment you try to go in he unleashes his full combo on you and you auto lose the trade.

If their jungler ever comes you're either blowing 4.png or you're dead. Sounds like fun right?

Your kayleR.png is also useless in most scenarios against 80.png because he can space out his burst. If you everkayleR.png right before he pantheon_leapbash.png he'll just wait for it to wear off and spam more pantheon_throw.png on you.

Pretty easy matchup for 10.png

You can basically endlessly harass her with and there's not much she can do.

All you have to pay attention to in this lane is ganks, because 78.png can set up kills with her jungler.

You should also avoid being close to walls, to avoid that poppyheroiccharge.png pins you to a wall.

133.png is a super hard matchup. At best you trade evenly with her, and this is assuming she doesn't get too many quinnpassive.png procs on you.

If she ever hits quinnQ.png you lost. You're forced to move back because you can't even see her, meaning she already won the trade and can keep winning by autoing further.

You can avoid dying for the most part and even maybe get a kill post 6 with your kayleR.png but it's going to be extremely hard.

Riven is a very strong champion with a wonderful early game

If she gets near you, Q her  while moving back and start harassing and she will be forced to back off with her E. If she tries to engage on you, just back up while she's slowed, and she won't be able to lock you down and win the trade.

The biggest problem in this matchup is your mana bar. Riven will always attempt to trade by closing the gap with rivenfeint.png+riventricleave.png and you will be forced to use kayleQ.png+kayleW.png to disengage and keep your distance. Ideally after she blows her cooldowns you turn and start using kayleE.png on her. The problem is that after a while you will notice that you're OOM and Riven is doing just fine, so she can definitely abuse this.

If possible, try to get early movement speed on your first backs. Ideally 3006.png while she's building other 1036.png items so the movement speed advantage allows you to kite her well enough.

At level 6, you can win most trades because your ult is a shorter cooldown than hers. Try to bait her into an engage, get her to ult, and then wait for yours to come back up then engage for the kill.

Ultimately, Kayle and Riven fighting boils down to who knows their champion better. Master Kayle and you'll win, but a good Riven is a very hard match up for anyone.

Old video, but can help you understand the matchup better:

I would not even consider this a normal mid, but I just went against a mid Rumble in ranked.

Rumble is pretty much a joke to deal with. You can hurt him easily from level two and onward. Try to watch his cooldowns and bait his E (harpoon) by stepping out of the creeps then walking back in so that he uses it. Once it's on CD, go aggressive and chase him down.

Haven't faced this matchup since Ryze got reworked once more, going to leave it as a Medium for now!

Similarly to the 78.png matchup, 98.png can't really you do much to you. He'll try to get trades with you by comboing shenshadowdash.png with shenvorpalstar.png and then shenfeint.png that will block your auto attacks, but after a while you'll figure out it's pretty easy to see when he's going in for a taunt.

Be wary that 98.png is excellent at setting up ganks. If the jungler comes and he shenshadowdash.png you you're most likely dead.

Not really a challenge for Kayle. The biggest problem you'll ever have is if he ever gets level 6 before you and gets to use talonshadowassault.png while you don't have kayleR.png.

So basically, Jungle pressure can affect this matchup a lot.

Other than that, Talon will usually try to poke you with talonrake.png. All you have to do is dodge and just abuse his cooldown on that skill and spam kayleE.png on him

Twisted Fate

Twisted Fate is really easy to beat in lane. He doesn't have much of an escape once his stun is down and you can time your engage on that--if he uses a blue card to get mana, just go all in with a Q followed by E and autoattacks.

The main problem is his roam. Luckily Kayle pushes extremely well, especially after she completes3101_32.png. Just let your team know when he's six and ward so you can see if he disappeared to ultimate or just grab his wraiths. Since you can't follow him, the best course of action is to just push--you'll get a free tower and that will be more valuable than any kills he may get (hopefully none if your team understands TF).

Like most champions that have weak early games, Kayle feasts upon Vlad. Go fully aggressive at two and the lane should be yours--deny him as much farm as possible, throwing out Q's all day. As he levels up to mid-game, he becomes an actual threat with kill potential, so ideally you will either kill him or completely deny him by level six.

By mid game, if he's getting too annoying/strong, consider spending 800g on 3123.png. Kayle is unlike all the other mages, she can apply it constantly to cut his healing

Don't give him an edge. This match up was made for Kayle--she loves to feast on melee champions.

Push the lane to hit two before him, while maintaining creep favor. Every time he goes to hit a creep, Q him and turn on E. Don't be afraid to flash for a kill early on if he's really low; while it may seem counter-intuitive, if you can shut down Wukong pre-six, he becomes a very moderate force of power and you'll win the game.

A good Wukong won't get decoy until level 4, so keep that in mind. Pre-four you win the match up easily, if you both hit six, it's down to skill. So play it like you own it and try to dominate him before he hits six.

Kayle does pretty well against Yasuo. If he makes it past the bans and they get him, consider Kayle a great matchup to play into him especially in the mid lane.

Bully him early on and push the lane to get two first. Be aware of how his shield works and once he triggers it, back off until it falls off.

It's important to also keep distance between Yasuo and yourself until he's 50%--you can't win a 1v1 with him if you're both at full health, especially before you have your ultimate. Poke him from afar and burn through his pots, don't try to get up in his face for a kill unless he's low and you're not. Save your ultimate for his, whenever he jumps on you, wait a second and then ult; you'll usually catch it and if not, you'll still block a lot of damage.

I try to play the lane by bullying him hard so that when we both hit 6, then he's half health and I'm not. Then I go for the kill. Your mileage may vary.

You should be very careful with his level 1/2. He'll try to charge his dash through minions to get extra damage and try to surprise you. At level 2 he'll continue doing the same when his q is stacked to try to combine dash and knock up onto you. Don't let him do this, stand clear from your minions. Before level 3 he won't have windwall so use this to your advantage to harass him with Q. Remember that you can activate his shield passive by hitting him with the E splash.

Zed is quite an easy matchup if you know what you're doing, but don't get cocky he definitely has kill potential on you pre 6. If he manages to get into melee range he'll out trade you hard. Other than that you should focus on harassing whenever he's close and pay attention to the enemies jungle movement. If he pulls off a successful gank and you're forced to back you'll lose experience.

What this means is that he'll get to 6 first and then it's a free kill on you since you won't have your own ultimate. Speaking of which you should wait a whole second to ult at level 6 to avoid the death mark pop. At rank 1 your ultimate only lasts  2 seconds, his lasts 3. By lategame your ultimate will have the same duration as his so you're fine.

The thing that's hard about Zed is that he can farm really well as well as be pretty safe from ganks. You can also rush 3157_32.png, but since your ult does the same thing, it's not as needed as it is on other mids to counter Zed.

Ziggs does really well against Kayle. He is not a counter in that you cannot lane against him, he is just a hard matchup that only excellent Kayle players will walk away from if the skill match up is somewhat even.

  • Try to trade hyper aggressively and push the wave to hit level 2 before him. Once you hit 2 before him, you can try to poke him and all in. Hitting 2 later results in a lost lane that should become a farm lane.
  • After level 3, he is stronger in every way.
  • Do short trades; Q and auto once or twice. Extended engages will always favor Ziggs.
  • Focus on farming. Don't try to melee creeps, or he will Q the wave and get free poke on you. Make sure you are always aware of your positioning so he does not get free poke.
  • Do not trade when he has his passive up. Be aware when it is coming back up.

Here's a video you can watch to learn more about the Ziggs matchup:

Kayle: Her Role as a Mid Laner Back to Top

When to Pick Kayle?

Kayle is a great pick overall. No Bias. However, she's especially a great pick if:
  • Their mid has a weak early game such as 8_icon_64.png
  • You have a hyper carry such as 222.png96.png  or a top laner like 2.png who thrives off being able to go balls deep without fear of dying
  • The enemy has a comp with high burst single target ultimates such as 122_icon_64.png--Kayle ultimate will block a lot of the damage and can easily bait their ultimates when they go in to blow up the ADC. Likewise, she's great against a reset comp against someone like 55.png since she can often stave off a reset and turn around a fight!
  • They have a suppression or taunt champion such as 90.png/72_icon_64.png. Kayle ulti is the bane of these champions' existence: they ult in on your ADC, their teammates follow up with burst, and your ADC doesn't die so you win the fight.
  • You want to win lane easily in most situations--her early game is ridiculous and she's one of the strongest laners in the game

What is Kayle's Role Before Team Fights? Farm > Follow!

I feel that most mid laners fall easily into two categories: lane bullies/farmers and roamers.
  •  Roamers are rarely in the lane and focus on making the plays 24/7 (55_64.png). They will try to push the lane and roam more often than not because in a 1v1, they are likely to lose.
  •  Farmers are champions who push the lane well and are hard to push out of lane (61.png). They are usually lane bullies, much like Kayle.

Kayle is first and foremost a farmer. She needs farm; her role is to succeed in lane by either shutting down the mid lane through her strong lane phase or by keeping up farm and getting an early tower. Once a tower is down, she can transform into a ganker easily, so she gains power by pushing and getting that tower ASAP.

The only time I roam on Kayle after 6 is for objectives or  if the enemy is clearly overextending and it's worth the time to get down there. For example, if a fight breaks out bot lane and you see your mid following down to tower dive them, you can easily W yourself on down there and pick up a kill or two if you react quickly.

Don't be afraid to make a gank--especially if you see top lane is extremely low and you could easily dive them with ultimate and your jungler or top laner. What I'm saying isn't to ignore the map and farm your heart out, but rather, to only gank for extreme value and to punish mids who do roam by pushing and getting their tower rather than adhere to their playstyle

As Kayle, you should rarely be setting up the ganks all the time. A free mid tower is always achievable with Kayle and something you should strive for due to her extremely strong wave clear.

Jungle Kayle Back to Top

Kayle jungle.jpg

So, jungle Kayle used to be awesome in season 5. You could smash people with1415.png and there was not much they could do about it.

Unfortunately, Devourer eventually got removed. 1419.png gives a nice chunk of attack speed but it doesn't really synergize with the rest of your build.

What about Runic Echoes (1414.png) ?

It's not that great on Kayle. You need to be able to clear the jungle fast, and in order to do that you need attack speed. I guess you can grab a 3101.png before going for 1414.png. The thing is, I don't think the current item synergizes too well with Kayle.

So what should my build path be?

So where does this leave Kayle? You have two choices

1. Go Bloodrazor anyways

Fuck it, ignore that the OP Devourer is gone and keep on trucking.

You should look to get 1419.png ASAP, followed by 3115.png and 3006.png. After this your build is pretty much the same as the options I gave in the laning part of the guide, but you should obviously look to have an attack speed oriented build with items like 3091.png3124.png and  3085.png.

2. Skip Bloodrazor

You can also do this! Just skip Bloodrazor and sit on 3715.png instead. From there, build the usual Kayle build provided in the laning guide

Kayle as a Jungler

  • Kayle is one of the only junglers that can be a carry and a support type jungler at the same time. She focuses on debuffing priority targets with her passive, kaylepassive.png and has one of the strongest ultimates, kayleR.png , to protect a carry from certain death.
  • Kayle's Jungle Clear times are pretty good, definitely above average but not the best
  • Her biggest downside is not having any form of hard CC, compensated by the uniqueness of her kit.
  • One of the best counter gankers, can completely change a small skirmish with a timely kayleR.png

Playing Safe While Being an Aggressive Angel Back to Top

(Section written by @Ashelia)

I figured a little section on how to play safe while also completely pushing lane might help any aspiring mid-laner. This goes doubly so since Kayle is one of the best pushers and most aggressive mids in the game. If you can't play her early levels aggressively, you will miss a large point of picking Kayle in the first place.

  • Always know where the jungler started. This can be judged from seeing how quickly champions get to their lanes and where they come from. For lower divisions, this is as simple as watching from where mid comes; however, in higher divisions, people may fake you out by coming from a weird angle. In this case, I always watch all lanes briefly while farming my first few creeps. For example, if bot just gets into lane after a creep or two has died (and they haven't taken any damage, thus proving they didn't do golems or wolves), they more than likely just hard leashed for their jungler.

  • Always know what type of ganker the jungler is. Does the jungler have strong ganks (33.png/60.png)? Does the jungler have weak ganks (19_icon_64.png/68.png)? These are all questions you should be aware of as they will impact at what time the jungler ganks, your chances of getting away, and whether or not you will need to blow 4.png. The worst thing you can do is flash and still die, but it's still pretty bad if you blow flash and didn't need to.

  • Always know the clear speed of the jungler at early and mid-game. For example, if the jungler has a slow clear such as 111_icon_64.png, you will know they might come a minute later than someone who has a clear like 254_icon_64.png. This gives you some extra time to zone--as well as thirty to sixty seconds of extra time to not ward their second buff.

  • In general, drop your trinket ward (if you started trinket ward) at 3:00 minutes into the game. This is the average time a jungler will have cleared both buffs. If you do not have a ward, at least keep note that they WILL probably gank within a 30 second window from that range. If it's not your lane, good! If it is, you're at least watching for it!

  • Always attempt to guess/know where the jungler is. Always watch your minimap. If he shows bottom, you're completely safe to go aggressive. If he shows top, you're completely safe to go aggressive. Watch your minimap out of the corner of your eye to see what direction the jungler is heading AFTER they leave the lane they just attempted to gank and theorize where they're going and why. Put yourself in their shoes: did they start blue, get their red, then show top? If so, they will likely circle back to wraiths then do wolves then come poke at mid again or head bottom. Once you start thinking this way, you will find that you can guess where the jungler is with much accuracy and die a whole lot less!

  • Early on, ward one side and favor it. Let's face it, buying two wards is overkill unless they're a scary ganker. I usually buy a flask, a ward, and a pot. As such, I prefer to ward their second buff then play angled to that side. This way if they go for an early level two gank from where I do not have vision, I can usually easily escape it since I'm so far from their point of origin--most of the time I won't even have to burn 4.png! It also lets me see their HP and time their second buff in addition to their first, so I can see if it's worth harassing them to try to kill them (some junglers get very low) or see if they are trying to just farm up and rush  rather than make plays and gank lanes.

Basically, learning jungle will make mid easier. I know a lot of players stick to their comfort zones--or they decide they hate a role and ignore it. Personally I used to hate jungling and I wouldl do any other role over it. I found, however, that I liked a few champions: 102.png254_icon_64.png, and 56.png. So I made an effort to play TONS of games as these champions despite hating the role so I could learn it. It improved my mid lane so much.

Eventually, towards the end of S3, I played so much jungle I felt like a 'jungle main!'

If you can get in the head of a jungler, you can perform so much better in lane with less anxiety. If this is foreign to you, just take some baby steps! Learn buff timers today, learn camp timers tomorrow, and then learn a new jungler each week after that. Understanding what junglers will gank your lanes more frequently and what junglers are stronger than others will make your mid lane much more successful as you'll be less likely to be shutdown by a camper.

To Ult or Not to Ult? Back to Top

(Section written by @Ashelia)

Kayle's ultimate has two pretty clear uses: damage prevention and protecting the ADC. However, one of the biggest mistakes people can make is not using it because they're "saving" it. It's one of those ultimates that's easy to misuse and that can cause a lot of reservations. But guess what? The cooldown is low. In the chaos of team fights, it takes supremely skilled reaction time to make sure you get that person Darius is just about to dunk. You probably won't get it.
Never overthink it.

Instead think of value. Your goal is to block a lot of damage, even if it's not the best play in the world. If you block even two spells worth of damage with it or a few auto attacks from the enemy ADC, you got good value! It's just a huge bonus when you also grab an ultimate or so.

Remember to try to cast using portrait if it's in the middle of a huge fight--you can easily misclick.

Initiation Value

If you have someone like 254_icon_64.png, you can ultimate her immediately after she lands on her target as a follow up. You will likely block several huge damage skills off of her, because people naturally think to attack what is closest, and that's a lot of value even if it's  not a game winning play.

Save the ADC, Save the Nexus

A lot of team fights will just be the enemies trying to burst down your ADC. If they have an assassin, always save your ultimate for the ADC. Those few seconds your ADC can autoattack the assassin likely results in a dead assassin especially if you Q the assassin as the ultimate wears off so the ADC can gain further distance.

Also, Heroes sucked after S1. Just sayin'.

Can't Suppress This

If they have a suppression spell, always save your ultimate to counteract it. The same goes for a taunt--try to stand back a bit and when they've landed their taunt on their target to focus them down, ult them so that the target lives through that burst.

Die Another Day

You can also just save your ult for a low health person and let them live. I prefer this method a lot against reset comps. I try to target the most mobile person who will actually be able to get out with the ultimate and not just die after it wears off.

A lot of times you'll see your tank slowly get lower and lower, then realize that someone is about to burst him for that last bit of health. That works too.

Likewise, if it's a team fight against a burst champion such as 134_icon_64.png, you can just watch cooldowns closely and ultimate someone who is low and near them if you're ware they haven't blown their combo yet. You will a lot of the times get an ultimate.

About the Authors Back to Top

kayle social media.jpg

Hi, my name is Shakarez and I'm the new author on this guide. Ashelia was the original author and parts of the guide were written by her. However, with the need for someone who still played Kayle in the higher tiers of play, I picked up the guide to update matchups, builds and setups.

I work here at LolKing as the site content manager, meaning I write articles, guides and make videos!

I've mained Kayle since season 2 and peaked at Diamond 1 in seasons 3, 4 and 5. In Season 6 I got to Master Tier

master boysssss.jpg

My name is Ashelia and I work on LolKing as its community director. I also work at Wowhead as its site director. Since I helped work on the guide system here at LolKing, I always wanted to make a guide. However, champions I usually play in ranked like Ahri or Diana already have amazing guides done by even higher elo players. With that in mind, who would need mine?

Then I remembered Kayle. I loved playing Kayle top in S2. When I saw her being picked up at OGN, she really spoke to me. She's the first mid I've really loved since my obsession with Diana and Katarina, and she had few guides to do her justice--and none that build her the way I do :)

I also have a Nami guide:

I also have a brand new Morgana guide:

Hopefully you guys like my guide. I'm far from the best Kayle, but I hope that my build and tips are useful to someone. I am just an average diamond player who isn't particularly amazing, but I do love Kayle. <3

You can follow me on Twitter (@ashelia). Outside of the game, I am a pretty geeky girl who likes things like Magic the Gathering and watching eSports. I hate Shaco and love kittens. Sometimes I lift.

Thanks for using LolKing and making it the best it can be!
