Summoner Spells Back to Top

Nothing special here. except for midlane kennen (which can be played with ignite, but imo is still better with tp), , other summoner spells then flash and tp should not be even considered.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

I build kennen as an engager with damage. taking movement speed masteries is very benefitical here, especially to get to lane faster, since you will be teleporting solely to other lanes or objectives. This is also the reason why i took 12 points in resolve and not in ferocity.

Granted, ferocity grants you a good amount of extra damage, however, the utility in resolve is a better option in my opinion, since, thanks to the removal of boots enhancements, and the fact that flash is very essential for the gameplay of kennen on its own, you need your flash up as quickly as possible.

the combination of 3158.png and your mastery, makes the 4.png cooldown of 300 seconds, around 255 seconds without ionia boots, and around 225 seconds with ionia boots(exact stats will be set into the guide later on this week), not to mention the decreased cooldown of 12.png. I value the utility of this higher then a maximum amount of mostly 7/8%, which is good. but as i like to say. ''one champion can occasionally carry a game, but a team can regularly win the game '.. This stays a 5v5 game. and its better to have all laners ahead, then that one champion is strong, only to lose the game on its own if he gets caught out or makes a misplay.

18 points in cunning is normal because thunderlords is the second best mastery (next to insight), cause a basic attack with a stacked passive of kennenbringthelight.png procs thunderlords.

Leveling order: R>W>Q>E

Always max w first.

W is your main source of damage and waveclear (in combo with kennenlightningrush.png) Maxing w decreases cooldown and increases damage. till the point that with 10% cdr (zhonya), you can get easely 2x w off  and 3x mark of the storm passive, in combo with with 1 full combo of your ult.

Why max q over e?

I chose to max q over e because 1: this gives me more oppurtunities to get a mark of the storm passive on an enemy, 2: has higher scaling then e and 3: the cooldown of q is 50% shorter at max rank then e, which can turn the tide in a fight. the movement speed is valueable that e gives, granted, but this does not increase with putting more levels in the ability, only the extra resistances, cooldown and damage increase. If you're the primarly/only engage of the team, then, max e second for the extra utility. if not, max q for increased dps.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Core Items

Core items vs ad tank top, ap mid
full build vs ad top, ap mid on both sides.
full build vs tanky teams and/or ad mid

Situational Items

liandry vs heavy health stacking teams, sorcerers when early magic pen is needed and your not ''the'' engage of your team echo when heavy ahead, for extra damage/snowballing protobelt needs more testing, but gapclosing/damage is always worth to consider.

Building path

Why 1001.png over 1055.png?

Boots is maybe the most underrated first item start there is, especially on a kennen with the masteries i take. Mobility advantage is a key to the kennen

playstyle that in my opinion should be played, which is short bursts of harass with passive W > W, which procs thunderlords passive as well.  boots keeps me out of range for counterplay and mimion harass, which gives ME then advantage in lane. which you are always going for. Unless your playing vs a ''red'' matchup, you should ALWAYS  go for winning your lane. and utility actually helps you WAY MORE then actual damage.

Dorans is the most popular start however, gives 3% lifesteal, and unlike people say it is, this, apart from the ''bonus of 7 ad and 70 health it gives,'' is actually imo NOT giving a relavant impact in the laning phase AT ALL. i would rather have boots 4 pots stat (starting 4 health pots is so much sustain, you should be able to hold out twice as longer as a dorans blade pot start in lane, if you want to.

Core: first item 3157.png or 3001.png?

This question all depends on your lane matchup. i always ask myself the following:

1: Am i playing vs ad top or ap top? vs ad? Zhonya.  Ap? Go to question 2

2: Am i playing vs a tank or a carry top? Carry top and easy matchup? Zhonya. carry top and medium matchup, or tank? question 3

3: High base damage or high scaling damage, ? High base (chogath-maokai): abyssal: high scaling (Ryze/Ekko): zhonya.

4: problems in lane vs ap? abyssal, if not? zhonya.

Second item: 3116.png, 3135.png or 3001.png (if zhonya first)

When you are behind, go for second item voidstaff for increased relavance in midgame, , when ahead and few cc source of your team, rylai, when ahead in heavy magic damaged focussed comp, abyssal.

Always adjust your build accordingly, dont always follow the same build if the game or situation doesnt let you, or the comps arent optimal for your items. I gave you my best opinion on what i would do in different situation. From here on out, follow the build-path in the guide, or adjust to your own preferences.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

pre 6 harrass should be so benifitial, that an aatrox who stayed in lane cant recover. relatively hard harass, and because of boots start, an simple http://lkimg.zamimg.com/images/v2/champions/abilities/size32x32/kennenlightningrush.pngshould be enuf to escape the knock-up range of E, therefore you can outduel aatrox. Mid/lategame you have also more impact,

VS

Akali

Easy

pre 6 harass should give you a big advantage, advised to build early abyssal scepter vs akali, to be able to outdamage while also resisting base damages of your fellow ninja friend.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy

if your able to kite his passive with active w, should be no problem to pop, especially since his stun moves way 2 slow to be able to be a problem to you. after rylai's may become a nuisancee, but in teamfights he is an easy dive.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

Simply outsustains you, also high base damage on w  and duration of silence is very very annoying, ask for help, and always safe your e to avoid rupture, which involves into his ultimate one shot combo. getting http://www.lolking.net/images/v2/items/icons/size32x32/1057.pngearly  is adviced

VS

Darius

Easy

due boots start, darius should never be able to catch you with his e, http://lkimg.zamimg.com/images/v2/champions/abilities/size32x32/dariusaxegrabcone.png  in the first place.

Therefore, you can make a darius his laning an absolute nightmare. as long as you stay out of range of e,you should always, ALWAYS, win trades. only go for garanteed kills, dont go for risky dives/2v1 ganks if you cant get your instant stun combo (w passive, q w ) in time, or within 1/2 basics. mid/late, unless the darius is fed, you should be able to have more impact. go zhonya first item to stop damage from http://lkimg.zamimg.com/images/v2/champions/abilities/size32x32/dariuscleave.pngand such.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Hard

VS

Ekko

Medium

tank ekko is not really that much of an issue, however, ap/roa ekko can be a problem, since he outdamges you+ the slows are annoying + he can press R before the 3rd stack actually stuns to make your cc nullified. dont dive this champ unless his ult is down, and only go for trades if your passive http://lkimg.zamimg.com/images/v2/champions/abilities/size32x32/kennenbringthelight.pngis up, so you can go for the instant stun proc when he uses http://lkimg.zamimg.com/images/v2/champions/abilities/size32x32/ekkoE.png

easy harass pre 6, post 6, just dodge the q for easy outtrade. if q is been hit post 6, gtfo of there, unless your absolutely sure you can take her on.

VS

Fiora

Medium

medium to hard matchup, depends on your and their intellience, dont immidiately go for the w, since reposte can block the ability damage and the stun. trade on range or when http://lkimg.zamimg.com/images/v2/champions/abilities/size32x32/fioraq.pngis on cooldown, then you should be able to win lane.

mid/late, she will be able to outduel you, so focus mid or adc first, then procede to fiora.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

VS

Garen

Easy

VS

Gnar

Easy

easy matchup, trade while gnar is in mega gnar form, or when q of gnar is down. easy dive in mini-gnar form, build zhonya for extra resistance, and http://www.lolking.net/images/v2/items/icons/size32x32/3020.pngto ''counter http://www.lolking.net/images/v2/items/icons/size32x32/3155.png. if gnar has hexdrinker, first pop this item before going for the all-in

VS

Graves

Medium

medium to hard matchup, http://lkimg.zamimg.com/images/v2/champions/abilities/size32x32/gravesmove.pnggives tankyness, and his waveclear is stronger. focus on trading with passive w and q, only dive graves when below 40% health without maw/hexdrinker, or 30/25% with maw/hexdrinker, then you should be able to kill him. lategame, focus graves and adc first in a teamfight.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

easy lane when played right, dont use e unless hecarim uses http://lkimg.zamimg.com/images/v2/champions/abilities/size32x32/hecarimramp.png,

easy harass, easy kill most of the times.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

Heimerdonger op. focus turrets only when you got energy to spare and when you can do it without losing cs, ask jungler for help, and if you get help, get passive w ready for instant stun.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

VS

Irelia

Medium

better nerf irelia... pre 6 relatively easy lane, post 6 a nightmare, always get w passive ready before trading post 6, try to chaincc her, eventho she has her passive, she still get cced. post 6, focus carries first, and irelia later on.

VS

Jax

Medium

can outtrade you, always try to stay out of range of e, and when you see it spinning, gtfo. then you should be all-right

VS

Jayce

Easy

VS

Kassadin

Hard

plain out outdamges you post 6. harass hard pre 6, and ask for a camp. post 6, focus other lanes, instead of dueling him. teamfight phase, always focus kassadin first.

can outtrade you, always try to stay out of range of e, and when you see it spinning, gtfo. then you should be all-right

VS

Kayle

Medium

early game is pretty strong vs kayle, post 6 and midgame your weaker, lategame she outdamages you. try to chain cc her, but switch targets as soon as she casts ult.

VS

Kennen

Hard

VS

Lulu

Medium

VS

Malphite

Easy

VS

Maokai

Hard

very high base damage, a passive that heals him for spells cast, which you do all the time. and tankyness/damage reduction which makes him very ahrd to 1v1. pre 6, you can take him, post 6, all you can do is get the others ahead while your building towards your abyssal.

I played this match-up once, vs an tryndamere main. and trust me, a little camp, and it can make you cry, over and over again. a tryndamere with ignite can easely dive you, you need your zhonya as soon as possible, and try to harass a lot especially in the early stages, like, lvl 1-4. after that it can become difficult. Get your other lanes ahead and do damage control for your own. and pray for the lords of elo that your team are ahead enuf to win.

Introduction: ''Who are you, and why should I trust you''? Back to Top

Hi. I am Enzo (EnLiTizo)  and this is my guide for Kennen: top lane. Some others also might know me from my warwick in dept guide, which currently stands top rated on this site, but while warwick was one of my first loves of this game, kennen is the champion i am currently playing the most!
kennen stats 2016 2.png

Kennen basicly is my new main champion for the toplane in the current season. I find him very effective in most of my games, and except of playing the doge75.png , i personally dont like to play tanky toplaners in general, this season. It also helps that despite being an so called ''top lane main'' offically now, i am still an all-rounder, who literally plays the position he feels like, which mostly means i go support (aka fill), if i dont go toplane.

Kennen on its own is a fitting champion for me, His diving playstyle is something i very like, and on top of that, he has a relative safe and strong laning phase. A Kennen  is does a lot of early game damage, can snowball out of control, and is  typically difficult to gank because of his kennenlightningrush.png

Artic ops is also one of the best skins there is. i mean. a snow-ninja that electrifies people?!  Shut-up and take my money ! (also own blood-moon btw)

Author's note: This is a basic Kennen guide on how you should play kennen, following this guide should imo improve your knowledge/view on kennen, and maybe help you learning/improving your general skill with this champion. this does not however guarantee freelo :) It all depends on the skill/playstyle you teach yourself over time, i am just giving you a push in the right direction

I am also available for either questions or dynamic q (plat 4 elo and above), feel free to add, but introduce yourself if i accepted you. I cant remember everyone's name you know :)
