Summoner Spells Back to Top

Summoner Spells

Untitled-1.png

4.png Flash is the first Summoner Spell and I recommend always taking it when you're playing this champion. This is because Flash is the best Summoner Spell around. It is a really good and reliable Summoner Spell. It can be used offensively, defensively and is honestly, a really good Spell to take.

12.png Teleport is the second Summoner Spell that you should take on him. This Spell is really good because it can be used to get back to lane quicker and it can also be used to help your team. In the early game, you want to teleport back to lane after your first back. Then you should look for Teleport opportunities where you can help your team.

New Runes Back to Top

Summon%20Aerie.png?width=32 Summon Aery is good on Kennen because he has lots of poke and can activate it. In trades, Summon Aery will allow him to deal tons of bonus damage. Kennen can abuse many champions because of his range and his kit, and taking Summon Aery is really good on him because it allows him to deal more damage in trades and abuse his enemies harder!

The next rune I recommend is The%20Ultimate%20Hat.png?width=32  The Ultimate Hat followed by Transcendence.png?width=32 Transcendence. These two runes are really good on him because they give him an amazing amount of bonus cooldown reduction. This will allow him to poke more consistently and also have his ultimate on an even shorter cooldown. Which in term, will allow you to start fights more.

The final rune in this page is Scorch.png?width=32 Scorch. I’m taking this rune because it will allow us to deal even more damage in the laning phase and allow us to abuse the enemies more consistently and more effectively.

For the secondary Rune page I recommend Inspiration.

You want to take Perfect%20Timing.png?width=32Perfect Timing and Cosmic%20Insight.png?width=32 Cosmic Insight. Perfect Timing is really good as it is basically a free Zhonyas, and Cosmic Insight will give Kennen free Cooldown reduction. This does not only reduce the cooldown of his abilities, but also his Summoner Spells and item actives such as his Zhonyas.

Kennen’s Passive is Mark of the Storm

Enemies hit by Kennen’s abilities receive a Mark of the Storm for 6 seconds. At 3 stacks, they consume themselves and stun the target.

Screenshot_8.png

Kennen’s Q is Thundering Shuriken

Kennen throws a shuriken in front of him dealing damage to the first enemy hit.

Tips: This ability is your main source of poke and early game damage. In tough matchups you can use this ability to farm- your Q is really versatile because of this. During the game, you always want to start any combo with Q.

Screenshot_9.png

Kennen’s W is Electrical Surge

PASSIVE: Kennen deals bonus magic damage and applies Mark of the Storm once every 5 auto attacks.

ACTIVE: Kennen sends electricity to all enemies that are affected by Mark of the Storm or caught in Slicing Maelstrom. Each enemy is dealt magic damage.

Tips: This ability is incredibly strong in the early game. The damage is ridiculous and can easily burst enemy laners. If you’re in a favourable matchup (such as versing a melee champion) you can poke them with your abilities and auto attacks. Whenever an enemy has stacks on them and you can activate this ability- I recommend doing so unless, you are going for kills. This will be one source of trading in the laning phase.

During team fights you only want to use your W when an enemy has enough stacks to be stunned, that also goes for laning if you’re receiving a gank or trying to kill the enemy.

Screenshot_10.png

Kennen’s E is Lightning Rush

Kennen transforms into a ball of electricity and becomes unable to auto attack the enemy. While he is in this form, he gains bonus movement speed, armor and magic resist.

Kennen deals magic damage to all enemies he passes through and extra against champions. Kennen can cancel his E.

Tips: Your E is one of your main tools for engaging or escaping. You can use it to escape but you become vulnerable while it’s down. If you are pushing in the laning phase, make sure not to waste it. The biggest problem with this ability is that you cannot auto attack while you’re transformed. This ability in general is a really good defensive one.

Screenshot_11.png

Kennen’s Ultimate is Slicing Maelstrom

Kennen summons a circle around him for 3 seconds that deals magic damage to all enemies that are inside the range of it. Slicing Maelstrom deals 10% increased damage with each successive strike against a target (up to 150% increase).

Tips: Your ultimate is going to be your main source of damage in team fights. While it is really strong on paper, your overall awareness of it will make it either weak or strong. In team fights, try to get your ultimate on as many people as physically possible. In team fights, you can either focus and peel for your team or you can go on the enemy backline. A good Kennen ultimate can win team fights easily.

    Your Fourth Major Item
    Your Fifth Major Item
    Your Sixth Major Item

Situational Items

    Example Full Build
    Situational Defensive Items
    Situational Offensive Items

Kennen is a really good champion and that means he can start a lot of different items. The most frequent and currently strongest is Doran’s blade start. This is a really strong item because it gives you all the stats that you need to survive the early laning phase. The other possible items are Cull or Doran’s Shield. I wouldn’t recommend taking Cull because you do give the lane over to the enemy if you start it, however it can be good if you’re in a farm lane. Doran’s Shield is good if you’re against a heavy poke enemy laner.

Your first core item is going to be Hextech Protobelt. You want to get this item as it will allow you to get in or get out of team fights. It can be used to either engage or disengage and it is incredibly strong on Kennen. During the laning phase, you can get this item to help clear waves too. Alternatively,., if you’re against a champion who has poke you may want to pick up a Haunting guise or Seeker’s Armguard. As Kennen, you have a lot of options and you should build the one that you need most.

  • If you need health because the enemy has poke: Go Haunting Guise.
  • If you need armor because the enemy has lots of poke and auto damage: Go Seeker’s Armguard.
  • If you are even in lane: Go Hextech Protobelt.

No matter what your  first "part"  item is, you always want to get Hextech Protobelt as your first major item.

Your second item is going to be boots. I recommend always taking Sorcery Shoes on Kennen because it gives him Magic penetration.Your third and fourth major items are going to be Zhonyas followed by Liandry’s Tornment. You need both of these items to buff your team fighting. Zhonyas gives you a really strong item active and Liandry’s gives you damage and sustain.

Your last two items are going to be Void Staff and Rabadon’s Deathcap. Void Staff give you damage and magic penertration, while Rabadons gives you increased AP and bonus damage.

What about AD, ON HIT Kennen?

In recent patches, AD Kennen was nerfed slightly and is no longer worth playing. In my opinion, AP Kennen was always the best way to play him. Currently Kennen is very strong with these items. If you watch professional players and check there builds, they are all building him AP Top lane.

Other reasons:

  • Not all teams have AP, Kennen can fill the gap.
  • Not all champions have high DPS, if you play on hit Kennen, you will do slightly less damage and have “no real” burst.
  • AP Kennen is really good in team fights.
  • Building Zhonyas will allow you to stay healthier for longer and deal lots of damage and survive in team fights.
  • You can get into the backline, you would not be able to do that with AD/ On hit Kennen.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

This is a very, very good match up for you. Aatrox is not very strong especially in the early game. You should try to poke him whenever possible, and deny him as much as CS as she can. It is important to not let him Farm, because he will get stronger with items. Try to take away, and deny as many resources as possible.

VS

Akali

Hard

This champion has strong 1v1 potential. Try to avoid fighting them unless you have the favour in lane. Try your best to harass them when they come too far forward, and try to kite this. You have the range advantage but they have the strong engage and can easily kill you. You can play more aggressively if they have no flash, or misplay. Go even in this lane.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Beware of his silence and his sustain. This is a tank matchup. You can kill them because you have the range advantage. Try to deny the enemy as much as possible and do not let them be in range to attack you. You probably will not be able to kill them constantly, so try to deny, poke and gain a CS advantage.

VS

Darius

Medium

This is a medium matchup because it is a skill matchup, you can easily kill each other so you have to play smart. In this matchup, try to poke them whenever they come to CS. They have ways of getting onto you, so kite them when possible. Beware of Darius bleed damage, and if he pulls you in, get closer to him before he uses his Q. If you are on the outer part of his Q, you will be dealt more damage. Try to stay nice and close into it.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Dr.Mundo is an even match up. He can easily kill you if you eat too many of his cleavers. So try to dodge them when possible. Even though you have the range advantage, he can farm from a distance. This is an even matchup but relies heavily on Jungle pressure and overall skill.

VS

Fiora

Medium

This is a medium matchup because it is a skill matchup, you can easily kill each other so you have to play smart. In this matchup, try to poke them whenever they come to CS. They have ways of getting onto you, so kite them when possible.

VS

Galio

Easy

This is a tank matchup. You can kill them because you have the range advantage. Try to deny the enemy as much as possible and do not let them be in range to attack you. You probably will not be able to kill them constantly, so try to deny, poke and gain a CS advantage. Do not let him poke you with his Q damage.

VS

Gnar

Easy

This is a good matchup for Kennen because you can poke him while he is in Mega form. Gnar is also quiet squishy, however do not let that think you can kill him all the time. Gnar has really strong 1v1 potential and can kill you if he gets some poke down. Try your best to deny him, and stay out of his AA range when he is in Mega form.

VS

Gragas

Easy

This is a tank matchup. You can kill them because you have the range advantage. Try to deny the enemy as much as possible and do not let them be in range to attack you. You probably will not be able to kill them constantly, so try to deny, poke and gain a CS advantage.

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

This is a skill matchup. They deal lots of AP damage so you should try to buy early Magic Resist. You need to avoid fighting them but still poke when possible. Stay out of the range of their abilities and just farm.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

This is an even match up because you are both ranged champions. Try your best to stay out of auto attack range, and do not let them poke you. If you are struggling to lane against this champion, just farm. If she uses her a offensively back off. Lissandra is rather squishy, especially early. Try to poke her when she miss positions, and if you see that she is out of Manor request a gank.

VS

Malphite

Easy

This is a good match up for Kennen. Malphite is not very strong against poke champions. You should try to harass him and deny him farm whenever he comes up to last hit. Beware of his level 6 engage. In this match up try to deny him as much fun as possible. If you push him under Tower, try to get your jungle to help you and tower dive him. Your job in this lane is to cut out all of his resources and deny him.

VS

Maokai

Easy

Kennen is good against Maokai because you have the range advantage. In this matchup, you want to focus on harassing him early and denying him CS. Beware of his all in potential and do not stand too close to the bushes because he will place his saplings there.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

Beware of his CC and try to dodge his Q. This is a tank matchup. You can kill them because you have the range advantage. Try to deny the enemy as much as possible and do not let them be in range to attack you. You probably will not be able to kill them constantly, so try to deny, poke and gain a CS advantage.

VS

Renekton

VS

Riven

VS

Shen

Easy

This is a tank matchup. You can kill them because you have the range advantage. Try to deny the enemy as much as possible and do not let them be in range to attack you. You probably will not be able to kill them constantly, so try to deny, poke and gain a CS advantage.

VS

Sion

Easy

This is a tank matchup. You can kill them because you have the range advantage. Try to deny the enemy as much as possible and do not let them be in range to attack you. You probably will not be able to kill them constantly, so try to deny, poke and gain a CS advantage.

VS

Swain

Easy

This is a skill matchup. They deal lots of AP damage so you should try to buy early Magic Resist. You need to avoid fighting them but still poke when possible. Stay out of the range of their abilities and just farm.

VS

Teemo

Medium

This is an even match up because you are both ranged champions. Try your best to stay out of auto attack range, and do not let them poke you. If you are struggling to lane against this champion, just farm. Beware of roaming and warding against this champion. A good teemo will take the ultimate hat and place dozens of shrooms around the lane and river. Try your best to avoid them and purchase control wards.

VS

Trundle

Medium

This is a tank matchup. You can kill them because you have the range advantage. Try to deny the enemy as much as possible and do not let them be in range to attack you. Try to deny, poke and gain a CS advantage. Beware of Trundles sustain and early game damage

VS

Vladimir

Easy

This is a skill matchup. They deal lots of AP damage so you should try to buy early Magic Resist. You need to avoid fighting them but still poke when possible. Stay out of the range of their abilities and just farm.

VS

Yasuo

  1. High damage output
  2. Consistent poke
  3. Good at Split pushing
  4. Good at Team fighting
  5. Has an escape
  6. Can engage in team fights because of your E
  7. High carry potentual

Cons:

  1. Has a hard time getting into team fights without being CC’d
  2. Hard to kite with
  3. Squishy early
  4. Hard learning curve
  5. Relies on team mates to follow up

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

  1. Your E is very versatile. It can be used to engage or escape.
  2. In team fights, you want to start with your Hextech followed by your ultimate. Alternatively you can go E Hextech R. This will get you into the enemy backline.
  3. When going for trades, make sure to use all of your abilities. Try to go in for trades when you’re about to have 5 auto attack stacks. This will allow you to stun the enemy in the trade.
  4. Your ultimate can get the stun of by itself.
  5. It is important to get your ultimate off at the right time and try to hit or stun as many enemies as possible.
  6. Even though you will be the “frontline”. Your ultimate can be used to hit the enemy backline or the enemy frontline.
  7. If you’re against a melee champion in the Top lane. You should kite the enemy if they go in on you.
  8. If you’re in tough matchups, you can use your Q to farm.
  9. When you’ve used your ultimate. Remember to auto attack the enemy while moving forward.
  10. Once you have activated your E, you can end it early which will allow you to auto attack the enemy.

Combos Back to Top

Before going for trades or going for full combos, it is important to see how many stacks of Mark of the Storm the enemy has. At 3 stacks, they will stun the enemy target and restore some energy. Playing around the Marks will allow you to deal more damage in trades, and make the enemy have to play safer.

Please note: (P1/2) is Passive Marks followed by how many stacks.

  • Combo 1: (P1) Q+W- This will stun the enemy, you can then follow up with more auto attacks or even an ultimate.
  • Combo 2: (P2) + W – This will stun the enemy. After stunning you can follow up with Q + E and ultimate.
  • Combo 3: E + Q + W – This will stun the enemy.
  • Combo 4: R + Hextech + Q + W – Example Combo. Will deal lots of damage to enemies and double stun them.
  • Combo 5: E + Hextech + R + W – Example Combo Variant.
  • Combo 6: E + Q + Hextech + R + W – Full Combo Example. This will be one of your main sources of DPS and team fighting combos.

Kennen’s kit is incredibly versatile. You can use your ultimate in many ways and there are a lot of alternative combos with him. The main concept is- “Get 3 stacks and stun the enemy, any way possible”. You can do this by using your main 3 abilities- if used correctly.

Early Game Kennen Back to Top

In the early game you main job is to farm, poke and deny. As Kennen, you’re really strong in the majority of your matchups. If you’re against a champion who is melee, then you will have an even better time. Laning as Kennen is pretty simple too, like many other champions he has to farm up and get CS for his first item.

In most cases, your first item is going to be Hextech Protobelt. This item is incredibly cheap and also is very cost efficient. Once you have built this item, you will be very strong. This is because you will have an item spike- faster than the majority of other players. This means you will be more of a threat to the enemy.

If you’re in a good matchup, you should try to deny the enemy as much as possible, and go for trades whenever you can. Learning when to trade and when not to takes practise so you need to make sure that you are trading at the best possible time to get the best possible outcome.  As Kennen, you can poke often in lane and because of your passive and Kit, you can deal lots of burst damage.

The standard laning phase for Kennen consists of dealing damage and farming. At level 2, 3, 4 and 6 you can go for an all in engage. Make sure to watch the map before doing so. Always hit level 2 first.

Mid Game Kennen Back to Top

During the mid-game you have two major options on what you can be doing. The first is to split push. If your team is not grouping or team fighting. Then keep pushing your lane. Keep pushing until an enemy comes, and then roam and help your team. The second option is to group and fight. If you group on Kennen, then team fighting will be much easier for your team. Kennen is really good at team fighting because of his ultimate and the ability to get in and out of team fights.

In the mid-game team fights, you want to hold off to the side and not make it obvious that you’re about to jump in with your E hextech R combo. The surprise element of Kennen makes him much stronger. By the time these team fights would have started you should have at least 1 or 2 items. You should go in and use your ultimate on as many enemies as possible.

Splitpushing:

When and when not to split push is hard to say. Split pushing is situational and not many champions rely solely on split pushing. Kennen is good at team fighting and split pushing, so do what you think is right. If you need objectives like Baron or Dragons, then you should group. If your team needs towers- then you can split push and get one.

If the enemy is grouping but isn’t fighting, then you should keep split pushing. This will draw at least 1 enemy to your lane. You can then escape with your E, or use teleport to group with your team and then fight.

Late Game Kennen (Team Fighting) Back to Top

Late game is where you want to stay grouped with your team. Grouping in the later stages of the game is vital to win any game. This is because, if you’re caught- the game is over. So you need to be with your team at all times. Because of your high skirmish and poke, you should poke before starting any team fights.

If you see one of your allies get caught or go in. Then you should attempt to go in too- as long as your allies will follow you up. Your main aim in the team fights is to hit as many enemies as possible with your ultimate, and stun whoever you can. In team fights you have two main objectives. You can either hit the backline, or hit the frontline and protect your ADC. If your ADC is fed, then try to protect them.

Because of Kennen’s kit, and the way he is played. You should always look for possible moments where you can engage or catch an enemy. Try to hide in bushes around your allies and flank the enemies with your ultimate. Try not to make your engages obvious and try to dodge as much CC as possible.
