Summoner Spells Back to Top

Summoner Spells

white_line.png

4.png Flash is the first Summoner Spell and I recommend always taking it when you're playing this champion. This is because Flash is the best Summoner Spell around. It is a really good and a reliable Summoner Spell. It can be used offensively, defensively and is honestly, a really good Spell to take.

12.png Teleport is the second Summoner Spell that you should take on Kled and Skarl. This Spell is really good because it can be used to get back to lane quicker and it can also be used to help your team. In the early game, you want to teleport back to lane after your first back. Then you should look for Teleport opportunities where you can help your team.

New Runes Back to Top

Runes

white_line.png

When playing 240.png Kled, I recommend that you take Precision as your main Rune tree. This is because you benefit deeply with the Runes that we will be selecting. Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32Press the Attack is the main Rune for 240.png Kled and it can proc thanks to your kledw.png W alone- that is, without your other auto-attacks or abilities with it! This means when you go for trades, you will deal even more damage to enemies. You should try to abuse Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32 Press the Attack against melee champions. When you're against a ranged champion, it may be harder: so you want to start a combo with your kledq.png Q and hook the enemies, then follow up with your klede.png E and then auto the enemy with your kledw.png W proc. Your next Rune should be Triumph.png?width=32 Triumph. This is a very good Rune and will allow you to sustain when getting kills or assists. This Rune will give you a ton of sustain in the lane and in team fights. For the next Rune, you have some freedom as you can take either three of the Runes. Personally, I prefer to take Legend%20Alacrity.png?width=32 Legend: Alacrity because it gives me attack speed which will allow me to deal more damage to the enemies and give me a higher attack speed. However, taking Legend%20Tenacity.png?width=32 Legend: Tenacity is good on Kled if you are against a heavy CC or tank team that consists of many tanks such as 57.png Maokai, 113.png Sejuani and 12.png Alistar- this is an example tanky team comp. You could also take  Legend%20Bloodline.png?width=32Legend: Bloodline which will give you sustain when auto attacking. It is your choice, but I think Legend%20Alacrity.png?width=32 Alacrity or Legend%20Tenacity.png?width=32 Tenacity are the better two. For your final Rune in the tree, I recommend taking Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32 Coup De Grace. This Rune will allow you to deal more damage to enemies and make you more of a threat.

white_line.png

For your second Rune tree, I recommend that you take Domination. Like Precision, this Rune tree will allow you to sustain and deal extra damage to enemy champions. Thanks to your klede.png E and your kledr.png Ultimate, Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 Sudden Impact works well on 240.png Kled because your klede.png E is considered a Dash and your kledr.png Ultimate are both buffed by Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 Sudden Impact. Your final Rune will be Ravenous%20Hunter.png?width=32 Ravenous Hunter. This will allow you to heal back some of the damage that you're doing to the enemies.

Overall, this Rune page is very good for 240.png Kled because it gives you sustain and extra damage that will allow you to be more of a threat to the enemy, and allow you to be the tanky-fighter that your team desperately needs.

Abilities

white_line.png

Kled's Passive is Skaarl the Cowardly Lizard

240.png Kled is accompanied by his friend Skaarl. If 240.png Kled is mounted or dismounted from Skaarl- his abilities will change.

Mounted Kled:

  • 240.png Kled's health cannot be improved except through growth thanks to levelling. Instead, Skaarl's health will grow. While Skaarl and 240.png Kled are together all damage dealt to them will be suffered by Skaarl. When Skaarl reaches 0 health, he will flee from 240.png Kled leaving 240.png Kled dismounted.

Dismounted Kled:

  • 240.png Kled's basic attack has a reduced range and he gains a bonus movement speed buff when moving towards enemy champions. 240.png Kled can also gain the ability to restore some of Skaarl's Courage and reunite the two.

Kled and his Courage:

  • 240.png Kled restores 20 Courage whenever a champion he deals damage to dies within 3 seconds. He gains 4 courage for minion and monster kills and 5 Courage when he damages a structure or epic monster. and he also gains 15 Courage when damaging an enemy champion. At 100 stacks of Courage, Skaarl reunites with 240.png Kled and resets all of his ability cooldowns except for his kledw.png W.
  • If you cannot gain 100 stacks of Courage, returning to the base will fully restore and reunite Skaarl with 240.png Kled.
kled_p1.png

white_line.png

Kled's Q is Beartrap on a Rope / Pocket Pistol

  • 240.png Kled has two different kledq.png Q's Bear trap on a Rope is when 240.png Kled is mounted. Pocket Pistol is when he is not mounted on Skaarl.

Beartrap on a Rope is when Kled is mounted:

  • 240.png Kled hurls a rope forward in a line dealing damage to all enemies it passes through and it will attach itself to the first enemy champion or large monster that it hits. Minions will take 50% increased damage. If 240.png Kled remains within the radius of his target for a period of time, he will pull them slightly towards him and slow them for 1.5 seconds.
kled-bear-trap.png

Tips and Tricks:
Your kledq.png Q is very versatile and can be used in a variety of ways. Your main use of your kledq.png Q early is to poke and start combos with. An example combo would be kledq.png Q + klede.png E and follow up with auto attacks on the enemy to proc your kledw.png W and your Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32 Press the Attack. Using your kledq.png Q will allow you to also push waves easily and quickly- especially in the later stages of the game. Make sure to hit the enemy with your kledq.png Q because it is your only skill shot and can- really, save your life. If you're being chased, you can use your kledq.png Q to slow down enemies

Pocket Pistol is when Kled is dismounted:

  • 240.png Kled sprays 5 pellets in a cone in front of him dealing physical damage to enemies that are hit and it dashes Kled 250 units back. Enemies hit take only 20% damage per pellet after the first, and each pellet that hits an enemy will restore 5 Courage
  • 240.png Kled periodically stores ammo up to a maximum of 2. 240.png Kled will store ammo even when he is mounted.
kled_q_dismounted.png
Tips and Tricks
240.png Kled is very vulnerable without Skaarl. Try your best to play safe and not die, especially as you will be low on health and defences. Make sure to hit the enemy champion with as many pellets as possible to restore as much Courage as you can. If you're against a ranged champion like 133.png Quinn, doing this can be quiet deadly. You do not want to push when you are dismounted as you will be denied farm. Try your best to freeze and take what farm you can. If you get ganked by an enemy champion, use the dash on your kledq.png Q to escape.

You will also proc Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 Sudden Impact because of your dismounted kledq.png Q.

white_line.png

Kled's W is Violent Tendencies

  • 240.png Kled periodically enters a frenzy that grants him 150% bonus atttack speed on his next 4 basic attacks for 4 seconds. The final fourth shot deals bonus damage.
kled_w1.png
Tips and Tricks
Your kledw.png W will proc Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32 Press the Attack in your Rune page. It will also allow you to do insane amounts of bonus damage to the enemies. If you use a dash ability (your dismounted kledq.png Q , klede.png E or your kledr.png Ultimate) you can do even more damage thanks to Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 Sudden Impact. Your kledw.png W cannot be activated, so it will pop off and activate at certain times during the game. if you see it's about to come up, you should go in for a trade and get the most out of your kledw.png W damage and Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 Sudden Impact damage.
Please Note: You cannot activate your W, instead it will go off by itself.
white_line.png

Kled's E is Jousting

  • 240.png Kled and Skaarl dash to a fixed direction dealing damage to all enemies in their path and gaining bonus movement speed for a second. Your klede.png E cannot go across any types of terrain.
  • 240.png Kled and Skaarl mark the first enemy champion or large monster that they hit and grant true sight on the enemy. During this time they gain the ability to reactivate klede.png Jousting to dash a fixed distance through to the marked enemy and dealing damage to enemies hit. In this instance, you can go through terrain.

klede1.png

Tips and Tricks

You can use your klede.png E in conjunction with your kledq.png Q to make for a good combo in lane. To do this combo, use your kledq.png Q and your klede.png E straight after. You then want to auto attack the enemy and proc your kledw.png W. If you were in range of your klede.png E, then you should klede.png E the enemy again. If you miss your klede.png E and do not go through an enemy champion- then you will not be able to reactive it.

Please Note: You cannot use your E when you are dismounted.

white_line.png

Kled's Ultimate is Chaaaaaaaarge!!!

240.png Kled becomes unstoppable and charges towards a target location. He will run and navigate around terrain along his way!

While charging, you gain bonus movement speed and a shield that increases over the duration of the charge. The shield lasts 2 seconds after finishing your charge aswell. If your team mates are behind you, and follow your charge they will also gain a bonus movement speed.

If Skaarl sees a champion on his great charge- he will home in on them and knock them back and deal damage to them.kledr1.png

Tips and Tricks

Your kledr.png Ultimate is really strong and can be used in a variety of ways. In the later stages of the game, you can use it to start team fights. You can also use your kledr.png Ultimate to get back to lane- in some cases, however for the most part, you shouldn't use it for that. During the laning phase you can use it to roam mid, or use it to engage on your enemy target. For example, you can run at the enemy with your kledr.png Ultimate, followed by kledq.png Q and your klede.png E. This is just an example combo. The kledr.png Ultimate is really strong and can buff your team heavily thanks to the bonus speed.

Please Note: You cannot use your Ultimate when you are dismounted.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Doran's Blade is the best starting item for Kled. I would recommend starting it every time you play as it will make you a real threat in lane.
I would only start Doran's Shield if you have too. If you're against a ranged champion then you want to start Doran's Shield.

Core Items

Your first major item is going to be Titanic Hydra. This item gives you pushing power, damage, sustain and defensive stats that will allow you to survive the game.
Your second item should be Boots. The only pair of boots I recommend getting are either Mercury Treads or Ninja Tabi. No others. Below I listed when you should take each.
I recommend taking The Black Cleaver as your third item. This item will give you sustain and will allow you to be more of a threat when team fighting and splitpushing
The fourth item I would pick up on Kled is Sterak's Gage. This item will buff you in team fights and trades thanks to the shield from its passive.
For your 5th item I recommend that you pick up a Guardians Angel. This item will give you damage and some a defensive item passive. This item is strong on Kled.
Your final item should be Dead Man's Plate. I really like this item in general because it gives you a ton of health and armor and the passive is good.

Situational Items

If you're against an AP champion in lane who keeps harassing you. Pick up a early Hexdrinker
If the enemy is mostly AP: here are some good items that are okay to purchase.
Example Full Build. This build is what I usually go. Beware, you will be missing out on Magic Resist.

Items and Suggestions

Untitled-1.png

240.png Kled has a really basic build path and I don’t usually go for a different build unless I have too. Your starting item will ideally be 1055.png Doran’s Blade every time. However, on some occasions, you will need to take 1054.png Doran’s Shield. I would only take 1054.png Doran’s Shield if you’re against a champion who is ranged. For example, if you’re against 133.png Quinn or 50.png Swain. 1054.png Doran’s Shield gives you some defensive stats that will allow you to sustain and stay healthy during the laning phase. However, this item doesn’t give you the early game strength or damage that you may often need to win the lane. Your first item should be 3748.png Titanic Hydra. This item is very good and will give you a range of offensive abilities and damage. This item will also give you tanky stats that will buff you throughout the game and give you sustain and protection. Remember to use the items passive to clear waves. It is an auto attack reset item, so you want to auto attack and then use 3748.png Titanic Hydra.red_line.png

Your second item is going to be 1001.png Boots. You want to take 3047.png Ninja Tabi if you're against a heavy poke team or heavy AD/ Auto attack based team. In some games, I like to take 3047.png Ninja Tabi as my first item- for example, if I am against a champion who has range like 133.png Quinn. Having this item with 1054.png Doran's Shield is really good and can help you survive in the early game. I'll take this item before I purchase my first. If I am against an AP heavy or CC heavy team I would get 3111.png Mercury Treads. For your third item, I recommend taking 3071.png The Black Cleaver. This item will allow you to deal lots of damage to the enemies and sustain through team fights. It will also give you cooldown reduction that will reduce the cooldown on all your abilities. In short, 3071.png The Black Cleaver is really good on 240.png Kled! Your fourth item for Kled is going to be 3053.png Sterek's Gage. This item is really good in team fights for 240.png Kled because it will give you a shield-buff that can help you survive in the team fights. It is really good on 240.png Kled as it gives you a range of stats.red_line.png

For your final two items, you have some freedom. From experience, I usually go 3026.png Guardian Angel and 3742.png Dead Mans Plate. These two items are relatively strong on Kled because they make him tanky, and give him protection from the enemies. During the later stages of the game, these items can save your life. It depends on which order you want to buy them in. In some games, I'll go 3026.png Guardians Angel 5th and 3742.png Dead Mans Plate 6th and then some I'll go 3742.png Dead Mans Plate 5th and 3026.png Guardian Angel 6th. You should buy the item you need the most. 179.png

Aatrox

Easy

You can easily kill each other. Try your best to farm what you can and put the enemy behind. Beware, you can easily die if you get too cocky. If you do not win this matchup early then do not worry- just try to farm and deny the enemy and go for trades when it is save.

VS

Hard

This is a frustrating matchup because the enemy has range and can constantly poke you out. Try your best to farm what you can. Early Game Back to Top

Early Game

Untitled-1.png

The early game for 240.png Kled is pretty simple and straight forward. In most cases, you will be against a melee champion and will have a good laning phase. If you’re against a ranged champion then it will be harder. Either way, 240.png Kled usually has a very good laning phase thanks to Skaarl. Your main job is to farm and scale for the Mid game where you shine. In the laning phase, you want to harass enemies whenever you can with your abilities and try your best to farm. If you’re against a ranged champion then I recommend starting 1054.png Doran’s Shield and playing relatively passive.

The only issue I had with the early game was that I liked to fight too often. 240.png Kled isn’t very strong until he gets some items behind him. So, do not get too cocky!179.png

Mid Game Back to Top

Mid Game

Untitled-1.png

The mid-game is where 240.png Kled really shines! He is very strong once he has some items behind him. During the mid-game, I like to play split push 240.png Kled and keep pushing the towers down. In most cases, you can get a huge farm advantage over the enemy thanks to the continuous push. You can also catch up on experience and gold if you had a bad laning phase. Split pushing on Kled is very good because you can quickly clear waves thanks to your kledq.png Q and 3748.png Titanic Hydra as well as your kledw.png W passive.

In parts of the Mid game, your team will need you. You should use either your 12.png Teleport or your kledr.png Ultimate to go and help them. If you cannot help them, then just pressure and continue pressuring towers and objectives. Like previously stated- do not get too cocky. Back off if the enemy tries to stop your split push.179.png

Late Game Back to Top

Late Game

Untitled-1.png

The late game is strong just like the mid-game! You should continue to pressure objectives and try your hardest to win the game. During the later stages of the game, you want to only splitpush if you have either your kledr.png ultimate up or your 12.png Teleport. This is in case the enemy wants to do Baron or your team starts to fight. If you have 12.png Teleport, then you should continue to split push and pressure the bottom lane. If you do not have 12.png Teleport, then you want to stay with your team and pressure the global objectives with your team.

Alternatively, you can stick with your team and start fights with your kledr.png Ultimate. Thanks to the speed boost, you can use your ultimate and try to catch up and take out some mispositioned enemies. Try your hardest to be pro-active and get as much done as possible.

When in team fights, you want to keep auto attacking the enemy- even if you’re going to die. In the late stages of the game, you can quickly get back Skaarl thanks to the games being a fiesta. If you’re going to die- keep autoing!179.png

Pros and Cons Back to Top

Pros and Cons

Untitled-1.png

We have talked a lot and in detail about Kled. However, like every other champion in League of Legends. He does have his downfalls and is not always strong. In many cases, it's not the champion itself, but the Top lane meta and who you have to play against. With that said, here are the Pros and Cons of Kled. What do you think of him?red_line.png

Pros:

  • Fun champion.
  • Frustrating to play against.
  • Can escape ganks easily thanks to your kledr.png Ultimate.
  • Pretty simple to play.
  • Can tilt the enemy thanks to your kledpassive.png Passive.
  • Once he's locked onto an enemy, it can be hard for them to escape.
Cons:
  • While dismounted, you're not strong and are very squishy.
  • It can be hard to get your courage back once you've dismounted.
  • Does not do to well against ranged champions or enemies who can kite.
  • You will get cocky early. Whenever I play 240.png Kled, I always seem to get to cocky and die stupidly...
  • When dismounted you will be incredibly slow and vunerable to ganks and damage.
  • You cannot use your first instence klede.png E to get over walls.
  • Easy to miss your  kledq.png Q skill shot and kledr.png Ultimate. You may look silly once you've used them.
  • Your kledw.png W will automatically go off if you hit one minion, this means you need to be smart when auto attacking enemies.

Tips and Tricks

Untitled-1.png

  • Do not get cocky in the early game. 240.png Kled is not incredibly strong in the early game, so try to avoid being cocky.
  • While you are using your kledr.png Ultimate, you will become unstoppable. The only way an enemy can stop you is by getting in the way.
  • If you feel like you're going to die, keep auto attacking and using your kledq.png Q. 240.png Kled can have some outplay potential thanks to his kledpassive.png Passive. Keep stat grinding and you'll find Skaarl!
  • When you change from mounted to dismounted, you will be invincible for a brief time.
  • You cannot use your kledr.png ultimate or your klede.png E whilst you are dismounted.
  • If you're being ganked, you can use your kledr.png Ultimate to escape or fight. It will give you a shield.
  • You can use your kledq.png Q to dash away from the enemy, especially if they are melee.
  • If you do not see yourself getting mounted anytime soon- just recall.
  • Before going for any trades, look for your kledw.png W to see if it's up- if it's up, then you could go for a fight.

Team Fighting and Ultimate Usage Back to Top

Team Fighting and Ultimate Usage

Untitled-1.png

Our friendly Cavalier 240.png Kled is a very good champion and incredibly unique because of his kit. You have two main choices for team fighting, thanks to your abilities and passive. Your main choice for team fighting is to either...

  • Focus the frontline
  • Focus the backline
Focusing the frontline is something that you will probably do the most. It is unlikely to completely take out the enemy backline on your own. In most cases, your team will need you to help them and protect them. So it is your duty to peel for them and protect them. You can use your abilities and auto attacks to protect them by focusing the person who is on them or who is in range of killing and harassing them.

The alternate is to focus the backline. It is rare for you to successfully solo kill the enemy backline. Instead, you want to be focusing the frontline. In most cases, you cannot kill the backline because of your lack of damage and sustain, however, it is not impossible. You should look for picks rather than always fighting 5v5.

blue_line.png

Team Fights

  • If the enemy is stalling, and you cannot start the fight, you can sometimes use your kledr.png Ultimate to get and start the team fight. Firstly, you want to make sure that your team is with you and ready to follow up- then use your kledr.png Ultimate and run towards the enemy. The same picking method applies like stated above.
  • Alternatively, if you're going to lose Skaarl- you can use your kledr.png Ultimate to get a speed boost to escape, or use it for the bonus shield to go deeper.
playbutton.png

During the Lane

  • If you have your kledr.png Ultimate up, you can try to kill the enemy. Thanks to the shield and speed boost, you can go for kills. There are a few different ways you can use your kledr.png Ultimate in the laning phase. The most obvious is to try to kill the enemy. If an enemy miss positions, then you can use your kledr.png Ultimate and catch them out. Once you're on them, it's hard for them to escape.
  • You could also use your Ultimate in a very basic combo. kledr.png R + kledq.png Q + klede.png E + kledw.png W.
  • The other way of using it is if you're getting ganked. You can use it to escape and get away from the enemy. You could also use it when your Jungler is ganking you, getting the speed boost will make it easier for your Jungler to gank you.

Getting Back to Lane

  • It's rare that you will need to use it to get back to lane. However, you can if you're behind. Whilst it's down, you can be quite vulnerable. I do not recommend using your kledr.png Ultimate solely to get back to lane.179.png

Combos Back to Top

Combos

Untitled-1.png
Our boy Kled doesn't have many combos, and has a pretty basic kit.
  • kledq.png Q + klede.png E + kledw.png W + klede.png E
This is a very basic laning phase combo. You want to start with your kledq.png Q on the enemy. If you hit it, then you should walk up to the enemy and get in range for your klede.png E. While you're close to the enemy, you want to consistently and consecutively keep hitting the enemy with your basic attacks. Just before your klede.png E runs out, use your klede.png E again for the extra damage.
  • kledq.pngQ + klede.png E + klede.png E + kledw.png W
This is a very basic laning phase combo. You want to start with your kledq.png Q on the enemy. If you hit it, then you should walk up to the enemy and get in range for your klede.png E. You then want to use your klede.png E again and keep auto attacking the enemy with your basic attacks.
  • R + kledq.png Q + klede.png E + kledw.png W + klede.png E
This is the same example as above, except you're using your Ultimate to start the trade. You can use this in team fights and post level 6.
  • R + kledq.png Q + klede.png E + klede.png E + kledw.png W
This is the same example as above, except you're using your Ultimate to start the trade. You can use this in team fights and post level 6.
blue_line.png
Remember to:
  • Not go in if you miss your kledq.png Q, or attempt to continue your combo.
  • You cannot activate your kledw.png W, so make sure not to go in unless it is up.
  • You should activate your 3748.png Titanic Hydra during the trades. Titanic Hydra is an auto attack reset, so auto attack the enemy and then use your 3748.png Hydra active.

Dismounted Kled- How to Play Around It Back to Top

How to play around Courage and Dismounted Kled

Untitled-1.png
One of 240.png Kleds downfall is his kit. Thanks to Skaarl, you will sometimes lose him in battle and become rather weak. You can always tell when you're about to lose Skaarl in team fights because you have two different coloured health bars. With that said, losing Skaarl is very unfortunate and you will have to change your play style once you lose him.

While losing Skaarl is pretty dam unbearable, it can be good for you. When dismounting, 240.png Kled will become untargetable. This is good because you can dodge some skill shots during this time- like 92.png Riven's rivenfengshuiengine.png Ultimate. It will also drop tower aggression if you're under tower!
blue_line.png

Facts about Skaarl:
  • Your kledq.png Q can go over certain small walls. It acts the same as 51.png Caitlyn caitlynentrapment.png E.
  • Any health items you purchase, will not go to 240.png Kled, Instead, they go to Skaarl.
  • You will generate stacks for your kledq.png Q whilst you're mounted.
Problems with Skaarl:
  • When you lose Skaarl, you will be incredibly slow. This means you are prone to ganks and being denied. To counter this you should not push and instead, freeze and generate courage.
  • You will be weak. Because you get no health item bonuses from items that your purchase (Health point stacks) you will be relatively low on health without Skaarl. This means you cannot go for trades safely in fear of dying. To counter this you want to try to play passive but also get stacks of courage.
  • You cannot use your kledr.png Ultimate or your klede.png E. You will be losing 2 abilities and you can only use your kledq.png Q (and your kledw.png W which goes off automatically.)
  • Incredibly unfun. When you are without Skaarl, you feel emotionally lost but also feel bored in lane. You cant really do anything so you have to play passively.
How to generate Courage and find Skaarl!:
  • In some cases, it will be impossible to get Skaarl back. In cases like this, you should just recall and go to the base. I tend to think- can i get courage safely and quickly- if the answer is no, then I will recall. I am wasting time staying in lane and being denied.
  • You gain 20 Courage from killing enemies, or at least dealing damage to them within 3 seconds of their death.
  • For each minion you kill, you get 4 Courage.
  • For each tower you hit, each auto will grant you 5 courage (this is the same for monsters.)
kled_1_new_courage.png

During the laning phase, it will be quiet hard to get Skaarl back however in team fights it's much easier.

Like stated, whilst you are dismounted you are incredibly vulnerable. It is your job to play safe and not overextend- especially in the lane. I would recommend holding back and trying to freeze against the enemy. This will give you time to get courage and also what farm you can. If you're against a ranged champion, then I recommend just backing. This is because you will be wasting time and being denied. You could be more proactive and just recall and regen.179.png

How to Lane Against a Ranged Champion Back to Top

How to lane Melee vs Ranged

Untitled-1.png

In League of Legends, there are a plethora of champions with different shapes, sizes and abilities. Many champions are melee and are recognizable by their point blank basic attacks. If you’ve ever played a game of League and if you’re reading this, you would know how unfortunate and painful it is to play as a melee champion against a ranged one.

Many players seem to give up the laning phase when they see that they’re against a ranged champion. Fear not! We will discuss some things you can do in these matchups to help improve your laning experience. Using the information presented will allow you to be more active in lane rather than giving it over to the enemy.

Starting Items

If you are a champion that doesn’t have the best early game, then I recommend starting with Doran’s Shield. This item is good as it gives you some early defensive stats that will benefit you in the early levels and help you sustain. Realistically, you will be unable to always trade exclusively against ranged champions. Taking early defensive stats will allow you to survive for longer during the early stages of the game.

image1510910303.png
Dorans Shield is a great starting item.

The item itself gives 80 health and flat health regeneration every 5 seconds. This is good because it will heal you back quicker when you are attacked. It will also restore health when taking damage from enemies. I do not recommend taking harass for free, but in some situations you will have to take damage to farm. This is overall a really good item to start with because it will allow you to survive in lane for longer against the enemy's harassment.

Level 1/2

In Melee versus Ranged matchups, the lane is quickly dictated by who hits level 2 first. In the all matchups, you will want to hit level 2 first but especially in melee versus ranged. If you do not get the level 2 first, then you will be denied minions and farm. While you may not be able to do anything against Ranged champions early, it is important to hit the level 2 to stay up in CS. Being an equal level will prevent the enemy going for extremely trades in the early levels. This will also prevent you from being poked out and losing minions and the experience. Farming is something you need to do and you must make sure to keep the wave in a reasonable position so you can farm easier.

Trading

Going for early trades against champions with ranged can be one way of swinging the lane into your advantage. If you can get the level 2 advantage, then you can go for a trade if the enemy is still level 1.

You can try to fight them if you have ranged abilities such as Akali Q, Zed Q and Talon W. However, this is very situational and depends on the champion you’re playing and who you’re against. It is recommended to look up your champion's power spikes. Most Assassins have the opportunity for an early level trade such as Zed’s W+Q combo. Champions who deal damage will benefit more from these early level trades compared to tanks.

Ability Farming

Most champions in League of Legends have at least 1 damaging ability. Some of them cost mana, some cost health and others cost energy. If you're in a matchup where you are being heavily denied CS from a champion with range, then I recommend trying to farm with your abilities.

If your ability doesn't cost any mana, then it is possible that you can farm with that ability. Dr. Mundo, The Madman of Zaun, has his Q ability that doesn't cost any mana but instead health. This ability will refund the cost if you kill the enemy hit. This can be a good way of farming because you are able to regenerate and get the cost back immediately or over time.

There are some other champions that can benefit from using their abilities to farm with such as Zed. While this sounds good on paper, it is highly situational. You should not, and I do not recommend using your abilities to only farm with. You need to poke and last hit. If you are only farming with your abilities, then you lose all your poke potential. You should not use your abilities to farm if they have high mana costs.

image1510910750.jpg

Sacrifice CS for Experience

Getting farm is incredibly important. In lanes where you will be poked when going to take farm, it is best to sacrifice some of them for the experience. While you do need gold and minions to buy items, experience and staying alive is more important. You need to stay up in CS and levels to still be hazardous to the enemy. While high elo players suggest getting a high amount of CS at 10 minutes, in lanes like this you will have to take what you can get. I recommend always trying to get Cannon minions, but be prepared to sacrifice some. Is that minion gold worth the amount of harassment from the enemy? Keep that in mind when farming.

Itemization

Depending on your champion, you may need to pick up more defensive items early. If you’re a tank and playing against someone with range such as a Kayle or Swain. I recommend buying early armor or magic resist before getting your first core item.

image1510911314.png

In Season 7, Bramble Vest was introduced and it is an amazing item. It’s a mini Thornmail with the same “Thorns” passive. It will deal damage back to enemies when you’re being attacked from basic attacks. This is good as it will allow you to deal damage to them when they attack you. At 1000 gold, the item grants 35 armor which will also help you when trading and farming.

There are many other defensive items out there. Some may be more viable then others and you should build what you need right now to survive the laning phase. Ninja Tabi is another good example of an early defensive item. However, you should only get this item if you will directly benefit from it.

Minion Wave

In every laning phase, you should play around with minion waves to get the most out of your lane. This depends on your champion, but you should try to have it in a more defensive position outside of your tower. You do not want to push the wave because the enemy will easily freeze the wave in a position much further up in the lane and deny you CS. This is something you do not want to happen. When backing or roaming, push the wave as far as you can so they cannot take your tower. Minions will act on instinct and if you’re being attacked by autos from the enemy champion, they will switch targets. This means the wave may mess up - keep that in mind when playing around with minions.

Roaming

If you’ve messed up the minion wave and are being heavily denied, then you should roam. If you are a champion with any potential CC, then you can look to roam and rotate with or without your jungler. Before roaming, make sure that it will be worth it. Push the wave so the enemy cannot take your tower. Look for potential opening in the game where you can gank your middle or bot. Wait for the enemy to use a core ability before going ham.

You must remember that you will be in a disadvantaged position at the start of the game. It is important to farm up and play safe especially early. You should try to position the wave in a favourable position to sustain a high level of creeps while also staying healthy and not being poked easily by enemies. It is better to stay a few CS behind early rather than having to back because you took too much aggro. Practise makes perfect when playing melee versus ranged. Every lane is different so keep an eye on what you can do to have the best possible outcome to this laning phase. In many cases, experience matters as League of Legends is a very, very situational game.
