Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png7.png is the main set up for any AD Carry. Heal lets you save both yourself and your support in lane and the burst of movement speed is extremely useful. Even though 


Some people argue that 1.png can be good on Kog too but we can buy a 3140.png eventually. Heal helps a lot in the lane phase, it gives us extra movespeed which can help us escape or chase and overall just something I wouldn't ever want to be without.

In mid game fights, it wouldn't be uncommon for them to see Fervor of Battle in the death recap after killing them, the damage really adds up.

96.png’s skill order right now is quite unique.

While you can take a point on your kogmawcausticspittle.png early on, the fact that its’ passive Attack Speed was moved to kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png on patch 6.3 means you can entirely forego points in it early and only max kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png and kogmawvoidooze.png instead.

Overall Kog’maw should be maxing his kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png first as it increases his range, reduces the cooldown on it by quite a lot and increases his attack speed.

kogmawvoidooze.png should be maxed second as the base damage on it goes up quite a bit and the slow percentage increases with rank.

kogmawcausticspittle.png is maxed last because the resistance shred on it is based on a percentage of the enemies armor and magic resistance, meaning it's only really good once opponents start stacking resistances.

Starting Items

There isn't much to discuss here. 1055.png should be your starting item 99% of the time. 1083.png CAN be an alternative, however you'll be at a heatlh deficit as Cull gives you no health compared to the 80 Health given from Doran's Blade. It might not seem like much, but Kog already has a weak early game and this is just making it worse. Against better players you will most likely be punished.

Deeper look at Cull

We just said that 1083.png reduces your early lane power a lot, but what about later into the game? Cull provides on hit lifesteal (+3 per hit) which usually is worse than the % gained from 1055.png. Because Kog can attack so quickly with his kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png, on hit is actually going to be doing more for you. 1083.png gives us bonus gold and more lifesteal, the difficult part is working it into our build. Ideally we want to get a 1037.png on our first back, so we would need to base with around 1350g to build both. If we base early and don't have enough for a 1037.png then a 1083.png would be fine too.

Core Items

As 96.png, your first item should always be 3124.png. He's really the only AD Carry that can use this item to its' full potential as kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png allows you to stack up the item instantly.

Your second item should be 3085.png. It allows you to stack up http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/a/a9/Fervor_of_Battle_mastery_2016.png/revision/latest?cb=20151103094518 and 3124.png even faster and the AoE damage goes nicely with your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png. It'll also apply the 3124.png passive damage, plus Blade of the Ruined King / Wit's End / Maw of Malmortius later on.

Once you hit your 3124.png3085.png powerspike you're insanely powerful and can start fighting properly. From here on out you just become a whole ton stronger and this is the part where you can famously stand still and just right click.


As for boots, you should be looking to pick up3009.png in most occasions. While 3006.png are still a good option, you’ll usually already have enough attack speed in your kit and your build so the extra movement speed on 3009.png helps when you’re on such an immobile carry. In simple terms - you already have enough damage to kill people, and Swiftness will allow you to be safer and stay alive to deal that damage.


Your main lifesteal item should be 3153.png as it’s another item with a lot of synergy with your kit. You want to stack a lot of attack speed for your 3124.png and http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/a/a9/Fervor_of_Battle_mastery_2016.png/revision/latest?cb=20151103094518 .  3153.png's Active allows you to easily kite opponents and its passive means you'll shred even harder.


Situational Items


  • 3072.png A great alternative to 3153.png if you feel like you're getting bursted and need the extra shield. You should only do this if you really have to, it reduces your damage by a lot because of the on hit effects of 3153.png that we miss out on.
  • 3139.png Lifesteal, Attack Damage and a 3140.png. What's not to like? Against hard crowd control this should be your go to item as soon as you finish 3124.png and  3085.png. There's one thing that will screw you over, and that's not being able to attack. QSS will make sure that doesn't happen.
  • 3053.png An excellent defensive item that also gives you a bit of extra AD. Especially good against bursty champions and the base AD bonus will add damage to your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png as you attack so fast.
  • 3156.png A really underrated option for 96.png. You get the shield which can save you against someone like Leblanc or Fizz but the passive is just as good. After the shield triggers, you gain +25% attack speed, +10% spell vamp and +10% lifesteal. 
  • 3022.png  700 health and perma slowing. If you have 3085.png you'll essentially be able to slow 3 people at the same time. You won't really be able to kite properly because you attack too fast, but it delays people reaching you and isn't expected.
  • 3091.png Wit's End is a great item on 96.png. You already have a very high Attack Speed oriented and with kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png you'll get up to 5 stacks in no time. This means you're shredding someone's MR by 25 and also increasing your damage by 25 PER HIT, every auto with your insane attack speed with be dealing that damage.

Medium

A medium to hard matchup for 96.png depending on the support choices.


Similar to 51.png, she out ranges you and will auto you to death early. She also sadly has the added bonus of having the mini crits which only adds to her auto harass. Early into the lane phase, you don't really want to trade with her at all. Her asheQ.png when active will most likely out damage your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png but this is more where the support comes into play. If your support can stop 22.png from auto attacking, then you win - think of 12.png or 201.png.

Mid to late game as long as you dodge her asheR.png or buy a 3140.png then you shouldn't have too many problems.

VS

Caitlyn

Hard

A medium to hard matchup for 96.png depending on the 51.png player.

51.png outranges you pretty hard. You can only match her range at level 5, once you have 3 ranks in your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png but a good Caitlyn player will constantly abuse that cooldown and auto attack you to death. You also struggle to start fights with her, if you run directly at her you'll take a caitlynentrapment.png to the face, followed by a headshot and lose half your health.

You should mostly play back in lane and farm. If you see an opportunity to activate kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png and trade with her you can do it, but remember that once it's on cooldown she has free roam to hit you again. In this matchup I don't use my kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png until she trades with me and wait for my  3124.png.

VS

Corki

Hard

Really hard matchup for 96.png even when you get further into the game.


42.png has so much burst damage, he removes you from the fight before you can ramp up your damage with 3124.png and http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/a/a9/Fervor_of_Battle_mastery_2016.png/revision/latest?cb=20151103094518.

The only way you'll win this lane is if you can dodge his phosphorusbomb.png and his missilebarrage.png. That is not easy to do so my advice would be to just farm and group.

VS

Draven

Hard
119.png is one of the hardest matchups for 96.png. He's a lane bully and outputs a lot of damage with his dravenspinning.png. As a snowball AD Carry he'll be looking to play for kills and get ahead of you.

Be very wary of his level 2 powerspike, usually a Draven will start getting multiple axes with dravenspinning.png at level 1 and once hitting level 2 he will try to kill you.

He has way too much burst for you to ever deal with, unless he has no dravenspinning.png spinning, don't ever fight him alone.

VS

Ezreal

Easy

Ezreal is mostly an easy matchup for Kog'maw. Outside of poking with ezrealmysticshot.png he can't really do much to you.

Whenever he's in range and your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png is off cooldown, activate it and force a trade with him, you'll always come out ahead as he can't keep up with your sheer DPS.

There's no reason to sit back in this, as long as you are behind minions he cannot do anything to you. Mid to late game you'll shred tanks so much faster and win most teamfights as long as you don't walk into his poke.

VS

Graves

Hard

Even after his nerf, he is one of the hardest matchups and plays very similarly to 119.png.


The only time you can really fight 104.png is when his gravesclustershot.png is on cooldown, but even then he will do a lot of damage. Wait for your 3124.png, play the fight perfectly and you might just come out on top, or you'll die very quickly, either one.

VS

Jhin

Medium

Most people think 202.png is awful and an easy lane, but that's not true at all.


The crit mechanic on his fourth auto attack is really hard for 96.png to deal with especially early. His jhinQ.png and jhinW.png harass, plus that fourth crit will add up to a lot of damage and simply you don't have an answer to it. In an extended fight you will win thanks to your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png but that is not how Jhin works. Jhin takes short, burst trades and then backs off waiting again for his cooldowns.

The lane phase might be a struggle, but in teamfights you should be fine so sit back, farm and if he tries to fight you with a full clip (4 bullets available) then activate your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png and fight him, overall you'll do more damage.

VS

Jinx

Easy
222.png is kind of just a worse version of 96.png at the moment.

She'll likely push you really hard early which you can't deal with, you'll miss a few cs but in teamfights you'll output more damage. Once you have your 3124.png you can keep up with her damage and take control of the lane. 

Some people find this matchup semi-difficult and you will early, but she shouldn't be able to kill you or set you too far behind.

VS

Kalista

Medium

The main part of this matchup is to watch for 429.png's level 2. At level 2, she will most likely have kalistaQ.png and kalistaE.png and will try to force a trade and attempt to all in and kill you.

You should back off whenever she has too many kalistaE.png's stacked on you so she can't rend you. Other than that, only trade with her when kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png is up and back off immediately when it goes on cooldown.


To be clear - in the early lane phase she will be difficult to deal with, but once you have your 3124.png (and maybe need your 3085.png too), you will output damage faster than her and she won't be able to get enough rend stacks to kill you before you kill her.

VS

Lucian

Medium

Lucian doesn't outrange you with his basic attacks, but he can constantly use his lucianQ.png through minions to poke you. When possible, he'll be looking to use his lucianpassive.png on you.

You want to play this lane defensively unless your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png is off cooldown. Once it's off Cooldown you can move up and hit him multiple times and win trades. Don't let him get short trades with you, he'll always come out ahead.


Be careful about tanking an entire lucianR.png, you have no mobility so you can't really escape it if you put yourself in a bad position.

VS

Sivir

Medium
15.png is back! After that 6.4 buffs she is much better than before and can actually present a problem for 96.png.

Firstly she pushes insanely hard early due to ricochet.png and spiralblade.png. There is no way you can keep up and you will be forced to miss some cs under tower. Her spellshield.png is also a pain, while your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png isn't affected by it, if you ever use your kogmawvoidooze.png to try farm or to poke, it moves so slowly that 15.png can easily use spellshield.png in time for free mana.

In teamfights you will output more single target damage and the aim is to remove her front line before she can remove yours, which shouldn't be too hard. The bigger problem is that her onthehunt.png can allow her team to run so fast and rush past your team onto you. Keep that in mind, group early and stick to the back.

VS

Tristana

Easy

This should be a really easy matchup. 


She does a fair amount of burst with her detonatingshot.pngrocketjump.pngbustershot.png combo but as long as you avoid that you will be fine. If she puts her detonatingshot.png on you then just walk backwards, wait until it explodes and go back in with your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png.

You don't ever really want to 1v1 her, it might work but it's not worth the risk. In a mid game teamfight you will output so much more damage than her even if she gets a lead.

VS

Twitch

Medium

As long as you don't let him twitchQ.png and creep up onto you, you should be fine. I've put this a medium matchup as 1v1 this guy will obliterate you and that can mean it's hard to find to farm on the map. 


The combination of 3142.png twitchR.png twitchE.png is way too much damage for you to handle, but thankfully you will outscale him into teamfights.

In the lane phase if you ever see him use his twitchE.png then that is your time to trade. That is where most of his early damage comes from and he won't keep up with your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png if it's down.

VS

Vayne

Easy

Very similar to 29.png actually, don't 1v1 her and you'll do more work in teamfights.


The vaynecondemn.png stun, plus vayneinquisition.png stealth are the two biggest problems you'd have. If she doesn't manage to stun you, and doesn't use her stealth properly then you should actually be fine.

In lane you outrange her with kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png and she'll struggle to trade with you. Especially after 3124.png this becomes a very easy matchup.

COUNTERS (When not to play Kog'Maw) Back to Top

96.png is a very immobile champion, you build so much attack speed you can't really attack move properly and your best chance at survival is often to kill them before they kill you.

Against champions like 238.png 7.png 105.png 91.png you will most likely not win that race and that becomes a problem. Thankfully you do have some answers to them like 3053.png3156.png3026.png but in general it will come down to your team to lock them down in some way.

Special notes for popular picks right now - 

111.png - Kog is pretty overpowered right now, but going against a 111.png top lane or support is not a fun experience. In lane he will kill you, and in teamfights he will lock you down and prevent you from attacking or allow his team to follow up. 

4.png - Probably not expected, but definitely an underrated pick against 96.png. He will punish your early game insanely hard, and the problem is you really need your 3124.png3085.png combo before you can get a 3140.png so for a large part of the game you won't have any way to deal with that stun.

Good Supports with Kog'Maw Back to Top

Honestly most supports are good with 96.png. If they're more aggressive then you can let them do the work and follow up with your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png. Defensive supports are much more useful really, you don't play 96.png for the lane phase, you want to just survive, get your items and then wreck teamfights.

201.png - Braum is by far the best support to pair up with. He has crazy peel, can front line with his shield but most importantly you almost instantly proc his stun because you attack so fast. This is one of the few supports than can turn your weak lane into a kill lane.

223.png - Very underrated and could actually screw you up if played wrong, but probably the best support at keeping you alive. The problem comes if he eats you while you have your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png active, the duration will expire and be wasted.

117.png - Obviously reasons really, let's add even more shields in and let you literally stand there and right click.

40.png - Very similar to Lulu. Great at keeping you alive and the shield will give you bonus ad to make you hit even harder.

412.png - Versatile support that go aggressive once you have your 3124.png, but also peel well for you. His lantern is a get out of jail free card and covers up your lack of mobility.

If you don't want to read the entire guide then this sums it up -


-Read the matchup you are against, work out how to play the lane and farm well.
-After 3124.png you can start to fight properly, and after 3085.png you become a monster.
-Stay behind your tanks in a teamfight, make sure you activate your kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png when you're able to use it for as long as possible (i.e. not at the very start, but as soon as you are able to attack properly).
-Trying to 1v1 doesn't normally end well. You're built to do huge AoE damage, not to win short quick duels.
-Defence is not a bad thing. 3124.png 3085.png3153.png is all  the damage you realistically need.
-Build to match the game - 3140.png against crowd control, 3053.png against AD assassins, 3156.png against AP assassins.
-If you don't need to attack move - don't. It significantly reduces your damage output and while on most ADs you want to move constantly, with 96.png if you can stand still then do so.
