Summoner Spells Back to Top

kog_devider_by_spyxeddemon-daom6eo.png

This is my AP Kog'Maw guide, where you'll experience the true Kog'Maw burst and never run hungry! And for everyone who loved to play this lovely Void Puppy ADC and underestimate his super bursty power with AP after his 'rework'.
I personally always have preferred the 'fast shooter' Kog'Maw, until I started to play mid with him a while back. And now I play this same setup Top, Mid, and even Support sometimes! It's really fun.  Please, don't forget to leave a thumbs-up if you like this guide! That would really help this guide.
Think AP Kog'maw is weak? Try it yourself. I myself 99% end up doing most damage of my team in the end.

First off, why CDR AP Kog'Maw, and why could this be better than the usual 'traditional' AP burst-build?

I would firstly like to emphasize that this CDR build STILL contains a lot of burst. Despite "CDR" is written in the title, it still packs a deadly blow on Kog'Maw's kogmawvoidooze.png ! in fact, this ability is what it is all about.
Understand that ever since the heavy 6.24  AP nerf AND the nerf on 3116.png, AP Kog'Maw has been burrowed down into the ground because Riot did not want him to be a champion like this.
But can Kog'Maw still be bursty with this nerf? The answer to that is yes,  and even better than that.

The difference between this build and the traditional AP-Kog build is you're mainly going to focus on spamming your kogmawvoidooze.png and kogmawlivingartillery.png as much as possible.   You don't pack the blow a full AP-Magic Penetration Kog'Maw will have (Which is only a slight difference anyway), BUT you will be able to use these abilities MORE OFTEN.  Why is this more efficient?  Because in team fights you want to poke squishy champions as often as you can. This has always been Kog's main focus on AP; snipe and poke the squishies (Like backline AD carries for example) to almost one-shotting them from afar.
This is the way to go after the big AP-Kog'Maw nerf from season 6.

I am level 7 Kog'Maw, he's my second favorite champion to play!
Some of my recent game history:

dcb55feabbaf5c36ed845c21398e0cd0.png

I used to play him in Ranked a lot like this too solo, but I more recently went duo-queuing a lot and play different roles.

Summoner spells:

I personally prefer to pick 3.png or 21.png along side with 4.png: You can trade very early on with most of the champions mid In general, 3.png is really good late game as well if an enemy tends to 1v1 you and you're alone.
Barrier is great to counter champions who burst and wil likely take 14.png.

In general, it's popular to choose 6.png over 3.png or 21.png, People use the extra speed to either disengage or kite with ease. However, since the nerf on it since 7.2 I don't feel like picking it much; the early slow on it makes it hard to be able to disengage at all, you're already dead by then. And you should be able to kite fine enough with slows on item(s) and your kogmawvoidooze.png.

-MASTERY EXPLANATION-

kog_devider_by_spyxeddemon-daom6eo.png

-Ferocity Tree-

• 5/5 Sorcery: Extra early on burst on kogmawvoidooze.png
• Fresh blood: "Empowered" auto attacks work with kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png as well.

• 5/5 Natural Talent: Late game, AP is the best for Kog.

• Double-edged Sword: Good burst early

• Piercing Thoughts Magic penetration over Armor penetration

• Deathfire Touch: Works well with kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png  considering they are auto attacks as well, the extra damage over time
is nice. Scales better than Thunderlord later in my opinion. (However! Considering the amount of burst you put
out in small amount of time, taking Stormraider's Surge is definitely ALSO an option. But this varies by playstyle.    Both work fine.)

-Cunning Tree-

• Wanderer:  Kog can use a little more movement speed. Better than Savagery because you don't really need it.

• Secret Stash: Best potion for now for Kog'Maw early game. It also grants you a fair
amount of mana back since you really need that after a while of farming.

• 5/5 Merciless: Good extra damage early and late-game as finisher.

• Dangerous Game: I personally prefer these over Bandit (Because you will not ever be behind in CS)
and Greenfather's gift. However, since the new update, Greenfather's Gift could be fun since you can
almost 1v1 all squishy champions with 3.png lategame. I have yet to try this.

-ABILITY MAXING EXPLANATION-

kogmawvoidooze.png > kogmawcausticspittle.png >  kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png

-LEARN ORDER-

• Firstly, learn kogmawvoidooze.png for early game minion farming and poke.
• Secondly,  learn kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png for ranged Creep hits and harass enemy a little if they're being annoying.
• Lastly, learn kogmawq.png  for more harass and last hitting Creep when other abilities are on cooldown often.

-MAX ORDER-

Max  kogmawvoidooze.png and kogmawlivingartillery.png first; you won't believe the burst damage early and late! kogmawlivingartillery.png also gains extra range.
The second ability you will max is kogmawcausticspittle.png for the attack speed you gain and armor shed. (Maxing kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png before that is pretty much useless because you barely will use it in fight if you have no attack speed.)
Finally, finish kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png since you now have extra attack speed and are able to switch auto-attacking + kogmawvoidooze.png better.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Doran's ring mana restoration is what you really need. Plus the extra AP of course!

Core Items

Get Tear ASAP at 750 gold so you can stack early.
Second back, get Chapter priority. If you have more gold, get some boots as well. Finish those into Ionians.
Finish Chapter into Morello for early CDR and lots of AP
Tear into Archangel's Staff (For Seraph's Embrace)

Situational Items

Trouble laning against AP? Take this
Rush directly after Tear if you're against Zed, or trouble with lux ult, etc.
    Laning fine? Take extra damage
Take this if there are a lot of tanks
Take this if they are building Magic resist.

Personal finished build example I built 'most often'

 3158.png 3040.png 3165.png 3285.png 3151.png 3157.png

-Core build explanation-

3070.png   Tear of the Godess This item will work really well with the amount of mana kogmawvoidooze.png and kogmawlivingartillery.png uses. (When walking around / back to lane, use Q to stack it every time it's off cooldown.)

3003.png  Archagel's Staff  for faster Tear stacking. At 750 stacks, it will become 3048.png, granting a whoppingextra 1000 mana. When activated, it gives you a shield that gives you extra defense and sustain which you will really need as Kog'Maw.

3158.png  Ionian Boots of Lucidity  CDR is good for you kogmawvoidooze.png + summoner spell CDR is great as well.

3285.png  Luden's Ekko For early pokwer spike burst you'll need early game for easy farm and burst on kogmawvoidooze.png  The extra movement speed is also nice.

3165.png Morellonomicon The mother of this guide. This is your main source of CDR. The extra amount of flat mana AND mana gain off its passive it offers makes it greater to throw your  kogmawlivingartillery.png as you please.

However, there are also other AP items I rarely (or never) build that may or may not benefit. Here is a list with my thought on them:

• BOOTS

3117.png  Boots of Mobility May be build to boost up Kog'Maw movement speed. But in my opinion not as efficient as

3009.png  Boots of Swiftness if it's for movement speed you're going, considering you will be constantly on the move and yet not as stationary as a support would.

3020.png  Sorcerer's Shoes Magic penetration is nice, but since we are going for CDR on this built, I would not take these.

3047.png  Ninja Tabi Only good if they have a lot of AD, but even so, you will be better off with other defensive items rather than these boots. And 3158.png is (again) still better.

3006.png  Berserker's Greaves Prefer to not get these at all; your main source will be kogmawvoidooze.png rather than kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png. The points you put in kogmawq.png 's passive will be good enough.

• OFFENSIVE ITEMS

3116.png  Rylai's Crystal Scepter Good amount of health and AP. Slow is great for kite/disengage. Still an OK item, but not really core anymore if you prefer other items and prioritize them for your game situation.

3151.png Liandry's Torment Goold ol' harass AP item in general, but mostly taken if the enemy team has a lot of tanks. It burns through their HP and damage is doubled considering its passive works on the slow of  kogmawvoidooze.png !

3135.png Void Staff Main Magic Penetration item for AP; when their team has champions like 3.png and/or building a lot of magic resist.

3089.png Rabadon's  Deathcap when you're not really in need of situational items as finishers, take this for a blasting load of extra AP!

3115.png  Nashor's Tooth I personally like to take this sometimes for fun or if I feel like I DO need some extra auto attack speed and for kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png  rather than burst on kogmawvoidooze.png. But that's rarely. It also grants a lot of extra CDR! good solid amount of AP too. Way better to get than 3124.png

3152.png  Hextech Protobelt Could be handy for certain escapes and it packs a nice activation burst if you need this in your situation, but that's rarely. And you don't want to use it to get yourself close since you're all about range from far away.

3146.png  Hextech Gunblade Really good item to have for sustain! Gives a good amount of AP, and some AD for your autos.

3030.png  Hextech GLP-800 I really rather get 3116.png  because you don't need the extra mana gain off both item and its passive since you have tear and upcoming 3048.png that should grant enough mana.

3124.png  Guinsoo's Rageblade Usually Kog'Maw's very favorite item, but not for this build! We're not focusing on attack speed. Again, the attack speed you gain off kogmawq.png 's passive is enough.

3100.png  Lich Bane It would be good for your empowered autos from  kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png , but still  this most build is about Kog's kogmawvoidooze.png so items being build should be buffing that ability the most.

• DEFENSIVE ITEMS

3157.png  Zhonya's Hourglass This is ALMOST core to me in Kog's build. Almost can't live without it because enemies especially like 35.png 238.png  91.png  107.pngcan easily target you since you are a squishy champion.

3102.png Banshee's Veil Good against 4.png ult since he can't see you, or grabs from champs like 53.png 412.png  and many other hazards that harass Kog'Maw. Because once you're stunned or grabbed in teamfights, you will have a very hard time to escape and you'll most likely be dead. Updated in 7.9, it grants CDR AND AP. It's a must-have item for any AP mage now.

3001.png  Abyssal Scepter Don't really need this if you have hourglass and/or finished Seraph's embrace, so I rarely to never build this. But still good if their entire team is AP and if you want to be a bit more tanky.

3026.png  Guardian Angel Despite the update after 7.9, it granting AD and no longer any MR, its passive is till fine if you're being blown up by anything (especially assassins) and even 3157.png 3048.png is not good enough, take this. But you shouldn't have to get it still.

3027.png Rod of Ages I built this before, it's pretty fun, but I rather preserve this slot for other items. Your main focus is to be in the back of the teamfight and 3048.png 's active combined with 3157.png 's should keep you save from being blown up.

Early game, with your exhaust still available, you can trade with her only if she jumps you near the turret or under even.  When Katarina jumps to you , uses katarinar.png, exhaust and throw yourkogmawq.png,kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png,kogmawvoidooze.pngkogmawlivingartillery.png combo. At this point in time, your combo should be burstier than hers and may result you winning the trade and even killing her.
Keep distance overal, and poke her with your kogmawvoidooze.png range.

Lee Sin

Lissandra

VS

Lux

Get Hourglass for her ult! After that, you should be fine. Priority to dodge her stuns obviously. But you can harass her pretty well, because she also has no form of mobility. However, the lane is now a bit harder since they buffed her ult CD in 7.9.

VS

Malzahar

Medium

VS

Morgana

Easy

VS

Orianna

Hard

Orianna is hard to lane against. She will zone you with her ball, because Kog'maw has no mobility. It's hard to harass her as well because of her shield. Still do-able to farm, but stick to the turret.

Swain

Syndra

Twisted Fate

You have more range than him, so harass him enough with your kogmawvoidooze.png. But remember to stay away if he has gold card. Take 3102.png at some point in the to block his ult from seeing you.

VS

Viktor

Medium

VS

Vladimir

Medium

Do-able champion to lane with. But harass is a little harder because he can dive under and heals passively off minions. You should be still able to farm well against him, but stay way when the bar under his health is full, wait it out. Else he'll do a lot of damage.

VS

Yasuo

Hard

SECOND MOST HATED CHAMPION for Kog'maw mid. Ban this champion ONLY IF 238.png is banned already. He will windwall EVERYTHING in your kit. You can only harass him with ult a bit. You are still able to farm somewhat and sustain just little more against 157.png than 238.png.

VS

Zed

Hard

YOUR NUMBER 1 CHAMPION TO BAN when playing Kog'maw Mid. You have NO way to defend yourself against Zed or even able to trade with this champion. He will always dive with his ult because you are easy target early without Zhonyas. If you do happen to lane against him, by all means try to play safe somehow. Even if you are behind minions a lot, don't die to him. You will 99% fail your lane anyway.

Ability info + Lane Phase focus Back to Top

kog_devider_by_spyxeddemon-daom6eo.png

  kogmawcausticspittle.png Q - Caustic Spittle

Gain extra attack speed per level as a passive. When hitting this attack on champion,
it will shred Magic Resist and Armor per level as well.

kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png W - Bio-Arcane Barrage

When active, Kog's basic attacks reach further and deal extra damage
depending on enemy champion's health. When kogmawlivingartillery.png is on cooldown, even in those few seconds,
or costs too many mana after spamming, kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png is really nice as a finisher and extends
further than Kog's usual basic attacks.

kogmawvoidooze.png E - Void Ooze
A bursty blow of vomit that leaves a trail for 4 seconds and slows enemies.
Use this ability when you're on the run, and usually after kogmawcausticspittle.png
to deal some more bursty damage when  engaging into fights.
Keep in mind that after leveling, mana cost go up!

kogmawlivingartillery.png   R - Living Artillery

Kog'Maw shoots vomit up in the air and it drops down, striking with a small AOE.
Damage depends on enemy champion heath, so generally you want to hit it as a finisher
                  after you thew entire combo of  kogmawcausticspittle.png >  kogmawvoidooze.png > kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png
Be careful early game with spamming; after using it once, mana cost goes up +40
every time you use it. After 8 seconds cool down, it drops back to 40.
So be sure to use it mainly as a finisher until mid/late game.
Again, be sure to max this first because of the range it gains!

kogmawpassive.png  PASSIVE
When Kog'Maw dies, his movement speed increases for 4 seconds, after that,
his body explodes dealing true AOE damage scaling with your level.
If you're focused and die, this is great as a final finisher after your allies have dealt the right amount
of damage on the enemies! Take that for killing me!

When entering lane, you want to survive as much as possible until you learn kogmawlivingartillery.png and last hitting Minions and much as you can, but don't risk your life missing some CS! Do no worry  standing behind in CS, because when you get kogmawlivingartillery.png and have some points in kogmawvoidooze.png , your laning phase will be super easy and you will generally have more CS than your opponent or at least near the same amount.

Generally when you harass your opponent while taking CS, use kogmawvoidooze.png then right after kogmawlivingartillery.png to do a good amount of damage. Don't abuse your ult this early, though. Because it adds quite a lot of mana cost.

In general, you want to farm as much as you can, and harass in between farming a little. Then wait for your jungler to gank, that will be the 'main' kill potential of your lanephase. Good if you are able to kill your enemy earlier on without the jungler.  I'm not saying you can't eat your food before a gank ;)

Late game, and when lanphase basically is over, try to poke and harass squishies as much as you can with kogmawvoidooze.png and kogmawlivingartillery.png considering you have a lot of cooldown by now!

Pros, Cons and Aftermath Back to Top

Pros:

- Buuursty!
- Lots of poke
- High range
- Low ban rate
- You got 1v1n'd and were one second too late to take your opponent down first? Blast kogmawpassive.png in their face!
- People constantly underestimate Kog'Maw's burst of kogmawvoidooze.png and then kogmawlivingartillery.png , so you're going to give them a surprise when they expect an easy lane. ;)

Cons:

- Highly immobile and no dashes
- Needs a lot of peel to sustain in teamfights
- Doesn't have any form of hard CC
- Hunger is never satisfied!

kog_devider_by_spyxeddemon-daom6eo.png

That's it for this guide. Hope you'll enjoy playing Kog a little more after this! Please keep in mind that this guide is entirely based on my personal experience with Kog'maw Mid, top, and support on both low and high elo. I usually did end up fed using these methods. :) Please, If you like this guide consider giving it a thumb up so more people may find this easier!

Now...Obey Void!!

7.5

83e68b588ca9ac6cf835d84a852df69b.png

Deathfire touch nerf. Despite the decrease of bonus %  AD, it's still good on Kog because you will still benefit of the afterburn, and the AD damage of kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png and auto attacks are just bonus.

6.24

885b7c90b3332ad869a5f58c7f7a1b12.png

Looks like 6.24 will have Kog's kogmawvoidooze.png nerved and AP scaling. However, kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png's damage is increased.
With the small kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png buff you have more harass potential, but the nerf on kogmawvoidooze.png will get you a hard time farming Creeps before you are able to use kogmawlivingartillery.png early game.  However, late game shouldn't be much of a problem. You still have great burst, now you're able to finish enemies off easier with kogmawvoidooze.png kogmawlivingartillery.png combo.
